THESE are bagels. Not Einstein Bros. Not Brueggers. My husband grew up on really good, authentic, New Jersey bagels, and these are the only ones he will consider eating. They are perfect: a nice, crusty exterior and a soft interior with lots of spongy goodness. The homemade cream cheese is good, too, although my husband says it's too whipped for his taste. I think that the texture is perfect to spread over warm bagels. Everything is relatively inexpensive, and the parking lot is certainly easy to manage. This is a great place!

I don't eat bagels much, maybe a couple of times a year, but I can't go anywhere but here. It's a staple from my childhood, and they are seriously the best bagels around. Do yourself a favor and get 2 (I recommend a salt and an egg bagel). Damn, now I want to go there.

Word on the street this is a bagel institution. Behind the large yellow awning awaits hot, fresh bagels of all the varieties you would find at an Einstein, with fresh squeezed orange juice from Westborn, cream cheese and other goodies ready to pick up and go. We stopped early Sunday morning for quick to go breakfast, on the way to the airport. I had lox, capers, tomato and lite cream cheese on an everything bagel. The SO had a breakfast sandwich (egg, ham and cheese). It all happened so fast that I can only remember that I want to go back. And next time I won't ask them to toast the bagel. I think the bagels are so fresh that they don't need extra crunch.

This place was a pinnacle turning point in the chaos that was my move to Ferndale. I needed a delicious and fast way to feed a crowd for breakfast, and this was my answer. The wait typically looks pretty long, but I'm amazed by how fast the workers can crank through the line. I was able to try the sesame and multigrain bagels as well as the vegetable cream cheese and the raisin walnut cream cheese. The bagels were warm and chewy and the cream cheese was flavorful and packed full of the different ingredients. It seems that they even go so far as to rehydrate the raisins in the raisin walnut cream cheese. This is definitely a solid place that I will be visiting on a frequent basis.

This place is really popular and in a pinch, a decent bagel. However, I feel like the name is misleading. I love NY bagels and I do not feel like these are like them at all. It is better than a store bought bagel, but I would prefer Eastside Bagels for their bagels, cream cheese and coffee selection. I had really hopped they would be like a NY bagel and I would be willing to drive further for one (since it is not super close to my house), but I would not recommend going out of your way to get here.

This is one outlet of a little mini-chain of New York style bagel bakeries in the metro area (I believe there are others in Southfield and West Bloomfield). I'd put it a step below the places I've been to in NYC, but only a small step. It's really pretty darn good. I had the plan lox/bagel/cream cheese, while my better half had the honey/walnut/raisin cream cheese on a blueberry bagel, and both were good across the board. One FYI: if you're used to a serious berry experience with your blueberry bagels (i.e. the type that's noticeably blue in appearance), this will be lower down the intensity scale. Still blueberry-ish, but much more of a normal bagel flavor than some other places. The breakfast bagels that others were carrying out looked fantastic, but I haven't yet tried one. That'll be for my next visit.

Best bagels in Southeast Michingan. I've tried a lot of bagels in my life, but I keep coming back here no matter how far I've moved away. The staff is super friendly; probably because they get to enjoy such delicious bagels everyday!

super soft bagels. the Lox is always fresh and they make their own cream cheese.

Consistently GREAT bagels made fresh daily on-site. New York Bagel updated it's front house a few years ago, with lovely wood cases with glass fronts to see those yummy bagels. The door to the kitchen is left open for customers to see the workings of those bagels being done in-house. You can order a bagel sandwich or take home bagels made especially for dogs or toddlers. They also have sweet bagels that are sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. The employees are always friendly and patient. They never get flustered or irritated when asked to toast a bagel or to make a sandwich. The ladies are hip and down with the Female vibe. Ferndale police frequently go to NY Bagel. I interpret that as a good sign and/or maybe they get a discount for their service to the Ferndale community? Mornings from 6am to 9am is NYB's peek time. Nearby parking can be a challenge during those hours. Please be careful if you are parking on Woodward. The cars drive by at high speeds. I highly recommend NYB.

Got the lox bagel with chive cream cheese. Wow that lox is so freaken good! The bagels are small to and does not give that much lox which is sad =( and all of our cream cheese was melted bc we got bagel toasted. But the lox was so good, beats everything. Wish they'd give us more lox abd cream cheese next time. I think they were out of cream cheese when we ordered.

Nobody does bagels better ! Even in NY! The salt sticks with the Olive cream cheese is a treat you should try as well.

  • Jess B.

Nothing like a warm chewy bagel, fresh from the oven. This place has them! These aren't fancy bagels with weird ingredient combinations. These are your simple ingredient bagels and they are delicious. There isn't much to say other than their bagels are awesome. It's a small joint. If you go on a morning, they'll be packed. The staff can some times be rude, but I ignore them and won't rate lower stars because the bagels are heavenly! I don't get the breakfast sandwiches. They do look awesome, but I just prefer a salt stick with cream cheese. Feel free to go in your pm's like many others. There is prime people watching. That's really it. Good old fashioned Jewish bagels in a thriving area!

Rosemary olive oil bagel and homemade cream cheese. You won't be able to eat Philadelphia cream cheese after tasting NY Co. Made!! There's always a line but it moves quickly and it's not a place where they will sugar coat doing their job with overly friendly personality ... They get it done and have quality product and that's that! Good breakfast sandwiches but really all you need here is the Rosemary olive oil bagel (often found separate from the rest of the bagels it is right near the cash register) and homemade cream cheese (strawberry is my fave!)

The Detroit area always impresses me with value and here is a good example, I got a multi-grain bagel with made on site cream cheese and lox. It was only $4 and tasted great. The Detroiter also looked delicious and I'll be scoping it out for round 2 in Ferndale.

  • Will B.

Delicious bagels with loks and cream cheese. I'm happy with the portion sizes, and amount of cream cheese. If you want a "heart attack" portion as the two-star poster below, I'm sure they're willing to give it to you. I actually don't prefer "gobs" of cream cheese, I like a nice even spread, which they provide. Great job! If I have a complaint, it is that I wish they had lettuce, and their coffee is just mediocre. I generally go somewhere else for coffee and bring it here. I wish I could get both from one spot.

  • Caleb Y.

Solid bagel joint. However, this is not a place of efficiency on the weekends! I like the bagels, but the sandwiches were just okay - microwaved egg...yuck!

  • Kristina A.

Delicious bagels, fast service. My dad used to take us here for salt bagels in the 80's when we were kids. They still taste the same. Lobby has been updated and I like the add ons, flavored cream cheese, fruit, etc. My kids love that they can see the bakers loading the oven. Only place in our area for a REAL bagel!

Amazing customer service by Natalie. Delicious Sandwich. Had a Salt stick for the first time and it hit the spot. Definitely going to be a repeat customer!

Love their bagels, especially when they are fresh out of the oven. My family has been going here since I was little and the quality is a constant. They even have bagels for your pups.

  • Michael W.

Great place to pick up a dozen bagels for breakfast for the week or for coworkers. They have cream cheese in the cooler which makes it easy if you want to stop on your way to work. They are fresh made everyday and you wont get any that have been sitting out for a couple days. They are new york style bagels so they are "chewier" than other bagel places, if you do get some that you want to last the week, wrap them up in a plastic bag so they don't get hard.

  • Patti H.

Last visit; Sunday afternoon. A heads-up; be prepared to wait in, an albeit, fast moving line pretty much all the time on the weekends. They make about a dozen of their own cream cheeses here, and a few traditional sandwiches as well. Their bagels are a pretty good size, not a big as you get at most New York bagel shops, but they're very good. The coffee is always hot and fresh too. Our favorites are the salt, cinnamon raisin, and the everything bagels. We also pick up a bag of their signature "doggie bagel chews" every time we're here as well. Ferndale is the location we visit the most.

  • Bonnie G.

Very fresh authentic bagels, you can smell them when walking in! This is the real deal for bagels. I am not picky on what kind, get what was just made. Definitely worth it. This location has a great variety of bagels and deli sandwiches to choose from. The lox are great, mini sandwiches also a good deal. My favorites include everything, onion bagels, turkey, chicken salad, tuna, and lox. The chive cream cheese is also a favorite. I always have great service when I go!

  • Brian P.

Not a true New York Bagel, but it does the job. I give their bagel breakfast sandwiches a thumbs up. Everything else was just... alright.

This place is hands down, best bagel shop on Woodward. Great prices, awesome food, fantastic freshness and great staff. Make it happen for yourself!

So yummy! Everything is wonderful, absolutely spectacular! You will not be disappointed as these fresh, wonderful, delicious bagels make you change your religion to pastafarianism so you can worship carbs.

    (5)
  • Tamara Y.

Hands down, my favorite bagel place. Lots of variety, and they are VERY fresh. I enjoy watching the guy unload fresh, hot bagels from the large commercial oven. They are fabulous hot out of the oven! My favorite cream cheese is the olive & hot pepper, but I enjoy the lox cream cheese as well. I'd like to see some funkier cream cheese options (like bacon/green onion or peppercorn/Parmesan, just off the top of my head) but it's certainly not a deal breaker. The main attraction is the bagels, and they do them very, VERY well.

  • Cuisin A.

NY Bagel has REAL bagels! Creamy cream cheese variety is excellent! Usually crowded, but very fast service. Parking lot may be congested in the mornings. Beware of the couple with a gold sedan pictured under photos. Thy will back up Woodward and block cars into their spots, all in an attempt for a single parking depot despite the many others that are open. They confronted the pregnant lady (me) about taking "their" spot while others swerved passed them to take other open spots. As a woman, the woman should be embarrassed by her man's behavior as he continued to talk and confront a pregnant woman about a parking spot when others were available. Shame on her an shame on him. Despite the lack of etiquette of some NY Bagel customers, I will continue to praise an frequent this establishment. Yes, their product is that good!

The BEST BEST bagels in the world. I would travel to the end of the world for these bagels. Always fresh!! I would give it 10 stars!!

By far the best bagels you will have in the area. There is absolutely no comparison. The sandwiches are great on their own as well.

  • Ms K.

In the years that I have been going here I have never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly and most importantly the bagels are the best I've had. Their cream cheeses are to die for! - my fave is the veggie cream cheese that is great on any type of savory bagel like onion, garlic, rye, etc. The best part is the bagels seem to stay warm for a really long time - even if you pick up a dozen to treat your office staff and drive in to work with them. Try their sandwiches too - good stuff!

    (5)
  • Ashley H.

The bagels and cream cheeses are the best I've had around Detroit. I usually get either an everything or egg bagel toasted with lox cream cheese. Their lox spread isn't the best I've had, a little too much lox to cream cheese ratio, but it's still deliciously creamy and salty. We've also tried the veggie and thought it was good too. Mmmm...they are who I think of when I want a good bagel experience.

I have literally changed hotel plans on visits just to be close enough to this place to get proper bagels in the morning from this place. There is nothing else like in Michigan or the UK. Cream cheese on a Salt Bagel. Amazeballs. LOVE THIS PLACE!

  • Chanell S.

Maybe I'm stingy, but a five star bagel place would have to serve up a fresh-out-the-oven, gigantic, perfectly cut bagel every time, and probably have some kind of loyalty card too. Don't get me wrong, these bagels alone are reliably good. But, I'm always weary about ordering my toasted and prepped bagel from them. Half the time it's cut uneven, barely toasted, or has more cream cheese in the hole than on the bagel. I get it, they're busy and have more to worry about than my quest for ultimate gluten satisfaction.

I had very high expectations for this bagel I was envisioning all morning long after Yelping NYBBC and seeing countless 5 star reviews. I arrive at 10 am, and see multiple bakers making fresh ones in the back. A good sign. I order my usual choice in bagel delicacy, a blueberry toasted with strawberry creamcheese and butter(I know.) I also order a salt stick for my boy and a mini Dole pineapple juice. The total came out to about $4.50. This here is the highlight.of my review. For this amount of food at say, Einstein, you would be spending $7, easily. Although, in this case... Perhaps I should have shelled out the few extra dollars. When the worker (who was a sweetheart) handed me my bagels, I sit down to open mine and realize that the crust of the bagel was a bit blackened. I then split it to find that my hopeful globs of butter and cream cheese were proportion for massive calorie intake, but instead received a Weight Watchers proportion of cream cheese. The bagel was so oily on the outside that I assume they buttered the crust, which happened to be burnt to the point of being unedible. I then go on to eat the bagel's inside. In their defense, my boy did not yet eat his salt stick. I will most likely return and give them another chance, considering I live 2 blocks down the street. Most likely, I will head to Einsteins for my over-priced heart attack provoking goodness. if you are willing to drive to 11.5 and Colidge, you can support a local biz and enjoy some delicious, homemade bagels and spreds, along with a Starbucks- comparable coffee menu at Elaine's.

Since this place is on my way to get my Sunday newspapers, I stop here WAY more than I'd like. Don't get me wrong, these bagels are super tasty, but they are not for the calorie (or carb) conscious. If you're off your diet, get the parm bagel and the cinnamon sugar. You have to try their reduced fat cream cheese too, it's whipped and super creamy. Yum yum!

  • Ross S.

Woohoo! As good as it gets! Indeed! At least in Ferndale, it is. NY Bagel is a great place to get your day started, especially on the weekend, whether it's picking up bagels for work or a breakfast sandwich for yourself. Super-tasty, cheap and the employees are friendly and accomodating... and everything is kept super-low key: no snooty baristas/servers, nothing like that at all. Bonus: if you like locally made/produced food/products... this is the place for you. Better Made chips, local ingredients... so good! This is the kind of bakery that will outlast all of the trend-tapping boutique bakeries... love it, love it love it!

Delicious hot bagels. Chewy mouthgasms full of vegetable or salmon spread. I love their salt, egg, everything and the bagel sticks. The cream cheese is so velvety. The lox is really good also and you should try one. In the morning after leaving the hospital at 7am New York Bagel greets me with steamy windows and the smell of hot bagels. There's a reason this place is packed in the morning and only sells bagels. Try a bagel breakfast sandwich. The canadian bacon with cheddar is delightfully salty. The only thing that could make it better is if the two ladies that run the front actually talked or smiled. But, they are always constantly super busy and efficient so, i would probably be very un-cheery also. New York Bagel is often something that makes me happy after a very difficult night being a nurse and for that they have a place in my heart. Love, juston

I've never had an authentic NYC bagel but if they're better than these they must be mind blowing. The Salt bagels are covered in coarse salt and poppy seeds and the Everything bagels have a great blend of the good stuff although they need a lot more salt if they use any at all. I picked up 3 of the each and a small tub of Chive cream cheese for around $10. Service was fine but expect to wait in line for a few if you get there at peak hours. A total asset to Ferndale!

    Yum!

  • Jennifer S.

These bagels are fantastic! My favorite is the everything with lox and cream cheese. They are not the huge fluffy bagels you'd find at Einstein, Panera, etc. Instead they are perfectly chewy, New York style bagels. I highly recommend picking up bagels to go, here.

xxxx xxxx Best bagels in the world! or Oakland county area... xxxx xxxx

  • Arturo F.

I have already reviewed this. But if you want a fruit bagel with fruit cream cheese, you are probably not in the right place. I would recommend a duncan donut.. A bagel is pure, the cream cheese is pure. This is the last place in Detroit Metro that is real. Go to Einstein for your goofy ass bagel, otherwise taste the diff!

  • Kimberly B.

My boyfriend thought a bagel was just a bagel, until he tried New York Bagel. Fresh, delicious bagels, great staff, home made cream cheese, and now greek yogurt cups! Seriously, when a bagel place packs the house consistently every weekend, all morning long, you know they're doing something right.

  • Samir N.

It is not cheap, but it is reliable. Even when there is a line, it moves quickly. They serve the bagels warm and it stays pretty warm even after I get to Troy. My insufferable colleague from Long Island is not a fan of the whipped cream cheese because it is not authentic, but I prefer it over the thick stuff (whip cream is not included in the price of a dozen bagels). I tried the lox breakfast bagel recently and that was the TRUTH. I shall be back.

  • Amy P.

best bagel I've ever had hands down. I can't even eat a bagel from a chain anymore! New York Bagel has a great selection of bagels, AND cream cheeses. And even if I'm a "late" morning person, they are never out of anything. Their variety is amazing, and the quality of both the bagel and cream cheese are great. The bagels on the outside have that crunch, and are so chewy and dense on the inside without being too heavy. Every flavor I've had is so tasty, and they slab on a perfect portion of cream cheese. The service is quick and on point. I drive out of my way many mornings just to get a bagel from here because no other place lives up to New York Bagel.

Best. Bagels. Ever. Seriously- best I've had anywhere. Mmmm... now I'm craving one.

  • Tara L.

I've grown up with New York Bagel. It's been a Sunday morning favorite in my family since I can remember. I've never had a bad bagel here, and I love how warm and soft they are. I'm actually eating NYB right now! If it weren't for the immense guilt I feel every time I shove about 4 bagels in my face, I'd probably be here every morning. Do yourself a favor and try their Lox bagel with lite cream cheese- it will have your taste buds singing! Their salmon is super fresh and chilly- a good contrast to a warm bagel. I especially love their atmosphere. I enjoy going there during a rush and standing in an awkwardly winding line. You just pick things up as you go- cream cheese close to the door, and a chocolate milk once you get further in. The service is fast and the great smells make me crazy! Even if you get there as the bagels are nearing room temperature, they nuke up quite well.

  • Sara G.

New York Bagel smells like what a real bagel place should smell like: onions, garlic, dough, steam, poppy and sesame seeds...YUM. And it's in my hood!! Every workday morning at the crack of dawn I drive by this compact and steamy-windowed bagel paradise. And after months of always meaning to stop, I finally did. It's hard to get me to stop once I'm in the car (I have a loooooong drive to work) but NYB is WORTH IT. The homemade cream cheese is delicious. The bagels are doughy with a bit of chew and very tasty, with liberal applications of various spices/seeds (imperative especially when your favorite is the 'everything'). A bagel, cream cheese, lox and tomatoes is only $4!!!! *PLOTZ* They need to start serving bialys. :D

  • Dea A.

New York Bagel is filled with happiness. They make *PERFECT* bagels. Excellent chewyness. Lox and bagel - awesome topped with delicious onion bagels - just amazing, Aaron is right, the BEST onion bagel ever salt bagels - it's like a Jewish pretzel, fantastic The last time I went in I lucked out and got some actual fresh hot bagels. Ahhhhh, nothing like stuffing your face with a bagel and trying to drive at the same time.

  • Rachel D.

I love New York Bagel. There's nothing else like it in the Detroit area (that I've tried). To me, heaven is their onion bagel smothered in chive cream cheese. Yeah, I totally don't mind stinking. Sesame and everything are two other favorites. Really, every flavor is awesome; not gonna' lie. Service is always good and fast. Bagels are always warm. Cream cheese is always whipped and smooth. It's the best.

Fantastic! Stopped in after going to the Royal Oak farmer's market. The line was long yet moved impressively fast. I had a bagel with lox and plain cream cheese. Seriously good everything bagel and the lox was spot on. My girlfriend had the olive hot pepper on an everything. Sooo damn good. I may have to break from tradition and get that next time! Just do yourself a favor and try it!

  • Kelli A.

Bagels were one of our 'in' foods back in the 80s. They fell out of fashion for us but now I'm craving them again. Wow, I love NY Bagel! Always hot and fresh, consistent quality. The homemade cream cheese is spectacular!! It's damn near buttery. The hot pepper & olive is great on crackers and sandwiches, too. I like that it's so close...a quick bike ride there and back. Groovy!

I am a huge New York Bagel fan. I've grown up with these bagels all of my life. I would call myself a traditional bagel expert. New York makes traditional bagels. They aren't big, puffy, soft rolls with toppings on them and a quasi-hole (ie Panera, Einstein, Brueggers, Big Apple, Dunkin Donuts, etc). These are boiled and baked with traditional bagel flavors that aren't remenicent of donuts. If I were rating the New York Bagel chain of stores then I would give 5 stars. I am giving 2 stars to the Ferndale location because they under-bake their bagels. Most of the bagels they sell are pale in color. They need more time in the oven to develop a dark, hard crust. They also cram too many bagels into each bake resulting in too many connected edges with neighboring bagels. Baking an inferior bagel appears to be the intent of management at this location. I've spoken with employees there and they are oblivious. More telling, I've spoken with bakers at other New York Bagel locations and they can't convince the Ferndale location to change. If you want the best bagel in Detroit, go to the 12 Mile or Orchard Lake locations. If you're desperate for a facsimile, stop off at Ferndale. Also, this location really should carry the cheeses that the others provide. Havarti is sorely missed.

Greatest bagels around, by far. Whenever I'm driving out in that direction, I ALWAYS have to reroute to make sure I can stop by for some fresh bagels. Oh, I could never choose a favorite bagel, but the vegetable cream cheese is out of this world. They're menu has certainly grown over the years and they seem to be continuing to develop. I find that the service is always good, but I have worked in the service industry for around eight years so maybe I'm a little more understanding when an employee is rushing around without a smile plastered on their face because there's a line out the door of customers who are visibly annoyed that they have to exercise a bit of patience for their coveted yum-yums. All of the employees that I've interacted with there have been sweet as pie and happy to help. I can't imagine traveling through Ferndale without stopping here, ever.

Good bagels and cream cheese, its cool to see the factory behind the counter. Seating and parking are very limited however, so plan accordingly. Coffee not so good.

  • Erin G.

There's not a ton to say about New York Bagel, except that it's really good. Not the best bagels I've *ever* had, but far and away the best "real" bagels in the area. Sunday mornings I pop over and there's always a line, but the bagels are often still hot (mmmmm). They make everything on the premises, which is cool. I don't like that they put garlic bagels in the same bag with everything else (one time I got a blueberry bagel that ended up being garlicky) but I suppose if you asked they'd probably separate them for you. They have doggie bagels and people are always outside with their dogs. Definitely a great place to have in the neighborhood, we are frequent customers!

Due to a special request from my pregnant sister who now lives out of town, I had to stop and pick up bagels over the weekend. It had been awhile since I had stopped into my neighborhood bagel shop, but it was just as good as I (and my sister) remembered it being. Yum! I also love love love their veggie cream cheese!!!

  • Jim R.

Bagels. New Yawk food. You can't get a decent bagel anywhere but Manhattan. This is according to my sister, the ex NYC cabbie. She never experienced NY Bagel. She can be SUCH a Nudge. Oy. Nudge for you non yiddish types is a pest, a bother, well, a nudge. I will admit that I have not been here in years, but I have an excuse. I've been in Ohio too long. You can't get real Jewish food in Ohio. The bagels are straight from heaven. This is what G-d himself eats when He wants a nosh. Yes, they are that good. But they can be pricey, but what these days isn't? I will admit that New Yawk bagels are good, but in case you can't get there, go to Ferndale. You'll thank me.

    (5)
  • Lori K.

Excellent bagels. one dozen for $7.00, they are fresh, just slice them and throw them in the freezer. The best ones are the caraway, sesame, cinnamon raison, pumpernickel. They are doughy, delicious and fresh, and yes, delicious. I drive to Ferndale to buy them. And I get two dozen each time. I love it. Funny to read about the customer service, you walk up order, pay and you are out the door..pretty good if you ask me..if you want a sit down place try Toast or something else. This is a "to go" place. Bottom line.

    (5)
  • Heidi S.

Their bagels are delicious!! I love all the options and how quickly the staff moves. Don't be turned off by the long line, there's a reason it's so busy!

    (5)
  • Pauly G.

Whenever my Pops lands at Metro Airport, its the same thing every time, A hug, a "how about the Tigers" and a shot up Woodword to get some bagels. He gets a whole bag of salted bagels and eats them every morning the whole time he's here. As for me, 3 plain bagels and a pound of cream cheese, and mine don't last more than 15 minutes. Nice bagel joint, careful when you park on street, you may lose a door if your not careful!!

  • Ferris B.

I am surprised how highly rated this place is. Because of the hype, I had to stop by and try it. I ordered a big batch of bagels to share its supposed deliciousness among my co-workers, only to be disappointed. I have had softer bagels from a Kroger bag. I would give it 1 star but I have to admit that this guy sat down inside to have his bagel hence they toasted it and covered it in butter...looked delicious. So I can't totally hate but I'll never be back anyway. Plus a little pricey for bagels :/

Nothing special about this place. Bagels were dry, dense and hard. And this was at five in the morning. The staff was in a rush to get us out it seemed, and when I asked if they could make one for me to eat to go the woman assumed I didn't want it toasted and slopped it together very quickly. I didn't want to go back and ask her to remake it because there was a swarm of pissed off looking middle-aged and senior men staring us down. It felt hectic in the place. I felt rushed. The bagel selection was mediocre and the taste and texture are not how I like my bagels. We bought a half dozen three days ago and three are still hanging out on the counter. I am sticking to The Bagel Factory and Elaine's. The only reason I gave this two stars is simply because my mother's dog really likes the dog bagels they have.

New York Bagel how I love thee. We get them most saturdays before work. Cheap, good tasting bagels make me very happy. Specifically these ones.

I usually wind up coming into this place at 5am. Love the bagels. Straight forward staff. No complaints. Salmon cream cheese & Egg bagel, pretty much my favorite.

The place for perfectly formed, perfectly fresh, perfectly tasty yummy bagels! I grew up on NY bagel (with some Detroit Bagel and Einstein thrown in there for good measure). I'm always in the mood for a super tasty NY bagel. Just ask my mom, who kindly packed 2 dozen bagels in her suitcase for me when she visited me during my study abroad in Glasgow. Just add some lox & cream cheese to that bagel and I'm one happy camper! My favorites are the everything and onion bagels w/ Lox cream cheese. Love the juice selection as well. Coffee is pretty ok....yesterday I actually decided that it maybe better than Tim Hortons but not as good as Dunkin Donuts coffee. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. Oh, and love that salt bagel that saved me from hungover hell that one Sunday a few weeks ago. Minus a star for spotty service. Sometimes its super speedy and sometimes its not. Also, watch out for cramped parking. The bagels are always amazing but don't go later in the afternoon. I usually go in the am, but yesterday I went around 230pm. The bagel had definitely sat around for a while, but it is to be expected because of the time.

The best bagel around!!! Best when they come right out the oven. The worst service too!!! A lot of yelling and eye rolling. Would like to see some fun and enthusiasm from their counter workers. I just send somebody else there now.

I'm fortunate enough to have 2 of Ferndale's best businesses at the end of my block: Cirilla's and New York Bagel. Do yourself a favor and get a Parmesan bagel with regular cream cheese, capers and lox. The fact that this is about 40% cheaper and 100% better than Einstein's makes for both a happy belly and wallet. Support local business, whether you're buying bagels or beads.

This might sound shocking but I don't typically walk in here for the bagels. I wander in midday for the sandwiches. Yes, I may order my sandwich on a bagel - or one of those wonderful onion rolls -but it's still the whole package that draws me in. The sandwiches are piled Scooby Doo high with melty cheese and corned beef with names like The Detroiter that just make you feel good about life. I grab an Orangina and know that the pickle and coleslaw on the side are going to put this whole meal over the edge in a real-deal New York Deli kind of way. Impossible to finish in one sitting, it keeps me coming back.

Best bagels in Metro Detroit! Hands down. Bagels are fresh and delish, and the cream chz is homemade and whipped. Top combos I recommend: -Everything bagel w/ chive cream chz (brush twice after) -Everything bagel w/ veggie cream chz -Rye bagel w/ chive cream chz -Onion bagel w/ veggie cream chz -Blueberry bagel w/ strawberry cream chz

I love going here on Saturday mornings, there's all types of people who just rolled out of bed, like me waiting in line and watching the busy and friendly workers behind the counter. It feels slightly big city to in the way that they are a small business that don't put a lot of stock in decor or a web site, but because of the service and product they still have a line out the door. The coffee is pretty *meh* but the pumpernickel bagel with raisin walnut spread is GREAT.

New York Bagel Baking Co. is a Ferndale institution. I'm 25 years old and my family has been going to New York Bagel for as long as I can remember. Great food and great service. If you go during a lunch rush be prepared for a line, but don't despair it usually moves pretty quickly. The only negative is that it has ruined me for bagels anywhere else.

Is there another Bagel place that compares? Not in my world! You might see me at Einstein in a pinch but there are so many things make this Bagel place the best. I guess foremost they are open at 5:30 AM which is perfectly attuned to my schedule. Second, the staff is very considerate, they treat you like family. Focused on the customer they deliver fast, excellent service and even select the perfect bagel for you. You do know that bagels come in all different shapes, textures and sizes?! Well they take that into consideration when cooking them and serving them to you. At least 90% of the time when I eat there the bagels are HOT and right out of the oven!! Another great thing about this place is they have every variety to shmear for any type of folk. As a Vegan I am able to enjoy two of my favorite choices hummus and peanut butter. Lastly, on a sleepy Monday, a cold snowed in morning or a desperately needed wake me up from a long night out on the town. New York Bagel has excellent coffee. I suggest you pay a few extra dollars and purchase the refillable Logo traveling Mug. If you have not already...you got to go. Give them a try!

NYBBC is like a lil piece of New york right here in Ferndale. I was in during the wee hours of the morning, and saw real old jewish men baking the bagels! It was really cool, and added to the authenticity of the place. The bagels have the perfect texture- a slightly crunchy shell outside and chewy carb-loaded goodness on the inside. Mmmmm... best make a trip there tomorrow!

New York Bagel has been in Ferndale as long as I can remember.. even as a kid, 20 years ago, my parents going there and getting bagels for my elementary class when it was my turn to bring in a snack.. Great bagels, reasonably priced and the location is perfect, as I am usually on my way to the Freeway or Main St when I drive via Woodward.

So, I've never had their coffee or their sandwiches, but I have had their bagels. Many, many times. I'd never really been here before I actually went to New York and had a bagel epiphany, and as I drove down through Jersey, my dad suggested that we try New York Bagel when we get home. Allow me to reassure you, this place is not only as good as H&H or any other bagel places in Manhattan, but it's potentially even better. I know, I said it. New York is the bagel capital of the US, and all of a sudden, I want to pass the crown to Ferndale? Crazy, I know. But I do. This is the place where I get breakfast for myself, where I take out when I have family in town and where I get bagels when I need them for a group. My only complaint? Their lox is inconsistent and could be sliced thinner. But that's it. Cream cheese is excellent (I always get the reduced fat so that I can pretend I'm doing well by myself), salt stix are delicious, the cinnamon twists are wonderful, and the people are quite pleasant. Oh, and they have those bottled Starbucks Frappuccinos. You know, in case a bagel and cream cheese isn't fatty enough.

Friggin' fabulous! I had never been there but have heard rave reviews from friends who live nearby. I think one even described them as 'addictive'. I finally stopped by this morning after seeing their glowing lights while driving by. I did a quick Michigan turn around while the thought of warm bagels danced in my head. I found parking right next to the store. It seems a little tight, and as a heads up, you can't pull back out onto Woodward-- you have to pull into the alley to get out. As soon as I got out of my car I smelled the warm bagels.. it was intoxicating! They had all of the standard bagels (garlic, onion, egg, etc) and sell their own cream cheese in containers. I got a 1/2 dozen and a container of garlic herb cream cheese. I just finished off a garlic bagel with the cream cheese and it was delicious. Not too much garlic, the cream cheese was fluffy and well flavored, etc. They have probably 15 kinds of bagels and maybe 10 kinds of cream cheese. They also had bagel slices and sticks, "teething bagels" and a case filled with yogurt, bottled beverages and etc for those on the go. Good prices (paid like $8 for the 1/2 doz and the container of cream cheese), quality product and friendly service. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and thanked me for coming in, which is rare in customer service anymore. I will definitely be back for my weekly stock :)

People will tell you that you can't get a good or "real" bagel in SE Michigan. Well, I'm no expert on if a bagel is "real" or not, but these and Barry's (in Ann Arbor) are by far the best bagels around. I'm convinced those people just haven't been to either of these two places and are stuck in an Einstein's rut or something. I frequent Barry Bagels a little more often, since it's closer to home, but when I find myself in the Ferndale/Royal Oak area, New York Bagel is my place of choice. I have fond memories of getting bagels here on lunch breaks when I interned down the street, long long ago. It's great to see that they're still cranking out the tasty, toasty bagel goodness. I can't vouch for the sandwiches, as I've never tried one - but I'm not big on bagel sandwiches anyhow. I'm more of a salt bagel (droool) and plain butter kinda gal. Or, for a quick and mobile snack, a salt stick. The folks working here are always friendly, and I often end up leaving with more bagels than I intend. An old standby of mine that I continue to love.

i love, love, love new york bagel. i didn't used to like bagels but this place makes you a believer. the russian lady that works here is pretty much my best friend. i feel like i've known her my entire life. she's so kind to me. i go here all the time when i'm in the area. it's one of the few places to eat around that a $5 bill will get you more than enough to eat with plenty of variety to choose from. the meat is always fresh and the bagels are always soft and perfect. they make everything exactly how you want it. if you want to buy something for a party or an office or something, the bagels here bought in bulk are perfectly priced for such an occasion. the service is amazing, the employees are kind and sweet, and the food is always delicious. i wish they were open all the time!

  • Jacquie T.

I LOVE this place. Not only do they have a great selection of bagels (my favorite are the salt bagel sticks), but they make their own cream cheese (the veggie has HUGE chunks of vegetables in it). I'm not even sure it's possible to get a stale or cold bagel at this place. Anytime I've placed an order, it seems to be just when they're throwing a freshly baked batch into the bin. And if you see a line out the door one Saturday or Sunday morning, don't fret. They move their lines f-a-s-t. You'll be in-and-out before you know it. Whenever I have anything where breakfast food is needed in vast quantities, I stop in New York Bagel and grab a dozen with a few tubs of schmear. They are gobbled up immediately.

Bagels are my weakness, when they magically appear at work I can easily eat 3 throughout the day - I don't actually do it - but I could. So the fact that New York Bagel is so close to my house is a real test of my will power. If this place was open late I'd probably be eating bagels every day. These bagels are the perfect size, not as big as a Panera bagel but not too small either. They are perfectly soft and don't need to be toasted. The Parmesan is so good. When Parmesan is baked it gives this lovely earthly salty flavor - yum! The service is fast, they have a good selection of flavors and are just plain good at making bagels.

Ok... being an office worker for the better part of 9+ years since I graduated from The legendary school known as Michigan State University.... I have had my fair share of bagels for morning meetings. However, it was not until I went to New York Bagel Co, in Ferndale.... that I could differentiate the bland, "Corporate same old same old" bagel from this extraordinary establishment. They are fresh. The texture, chew and flavor is always top notch. The cream cheeses are flavorful. This yelp is short. But can be summed up in 1 word. Delicious.

For a ham and Swiss on pump and a bowl of soup plus slaw and a pickle for 0nly $7.50, I'd have to say that this is a good price for the area. You can go get crap a chain place for that. I stared going a month ago and make a weekly stop ever since. If you go at peak hours bring your patience because people like this place and the staff does not try to get more than one person done at a time. When it is your turn you will have the same individual service.

I never thought something as simple as a toasted plain bagel with plain cream cheese could be so good until I tried New York Bagel. I can't even remember how many different places, towns, etc. where I've eaten bagels. But I know I've had a lot. New York Bagel makes some of the best. They don't go too overboard with the specialty varieties, it's kind of basic. The only bagel that sticks out as being an in-house specialty is the Parmesan cheese bagel, which is excellent. My favorite combinations: Toasted Parmesan cheese bagel with sundried-tomato cream cheese Toasted plain bagel with plain cream cheese Untoasted onion bagel with a packet of cream cheese instead of the usual schmear Toasted plain bagel with lox and cream cheese They also have sandwiches and that means they have things like lettuce or pickles or tomatoes or meat available to put on your bagel and make your own bagel sandwich. I've never had much luck with their pre-designed sandwiches, but I'm also not a fan of an inch-and-a-half of corned beef on an onion roll with Russian dressing and Swiss cheese. It just isn't my bag. It's always pretty busy in the morning, but the line moves quick.

I probably wont go back. The bagel was hard, possibly stale. Gross. I almost didn't finish eating it but I was starving and in a rush.

  • Craig M.

Best bagels I've found in the midwest. Always fresh and fairly priced. Generous lox. The young guy with the clever t-shirts prepares the best bagels... he puts the extra effort to make sure the cream cheese is evenly distributed on both halves (it's the little things that make the difference). I try to position myself in line so that he makes mine.

  • Dennis L.

These bagels are off the hook. I've been here half a dozen times and it's always great and expeditious service. My only reservation I have is I expected them to be able to do an egg and meat bagel. Every other New York style bagel joint I've been to does this; so, I was crushed to learn they can't. That said, I'm by no means a New York or bagel expert. Just eat there.

I've been going here for years! Mostly between 5 & 6 am, for the fresh warm ones. BUT this morning, I got half a dozen, in hurry, arrived to my destination ready for my first bite, and low and behold THEY WERE HARD, COLD, YESTERDAY'S bagels! SERIOUSLY...I grew up in a family bakery and NEVER would we sell someone yesterdays baked goods at FULL PRICE and the end of the 2nd day, all went to homeless shelters for hungry. I should have gone back, but just too disgusted! Will now travel to Marty's, The Bagel Factory in Southfield...and tolerate the rudeness for at least a superior product...

I have been to New York Bagel twice now. The first foray featured a few cinnamon raison bagels, salt bagel (my first) and an onion roll type thing. The quality of the bagels is top notch. They are the perfect combination of soft and firm. They toast delightfully to a crusty outer and soft inner. A jewish deli in disguise this establishment also offers smoked salmon, Lox, and a great selection of homemade cheeses. I recently picked up one dozen bagels and a cinnamon raison stick for $8. You will not get a better deal anywhere. I am sad to say that this place has ruined me for the cheap bagels that I used to consume. Skip the chain bagel joints this is the real thing for real people.

  • Liz H.

Two words: Salt Stick. I usually get a salt stick or two, toasted, but not cut open. Add to that a Sierra Mist Free, and/or Cinnamon Stick tea, and/or a bottled water, and/or a can of V8. Also, I have a neurotic obsession with only getting the packets of Philadelphia Cream Cheese, rather than having them put their own cream cheese on. The NY Bagel cream cheese is good, I'm just dedicated to the Philly. Best bagels in the area. Perfect spot to get a coffee/tea and a bagel on your way to work. Cheap, warm, good. And they were even open on Christmas morning. WTF? Awesome.

I guess the lesson here is to never go to a bagel place for lunch (even though einstein's can do a mean turkey sandwich and tim horton's has a rockin blt). I went here from a reco my buddy gave me to try their lunch time sandwiches and it was poor at best. The veggies weren't fresh, the bread was soggy and the pickles were nastee! I asked where they got their ingredients from and she beat around the bush for a few seconds and then said that they import them. There's got to be a market for fresher, home grown ingredients to pay a little bit more in this area, isn't there?

    (3)

So good! The egg bagel is amazing and the veggie cream cheese is the best on the planet by far.

    (5)
  • Jack L.

New York Bagel has always been the definition of a bagel to me. If I get a bagel and it doesn't have that NYB hard shell, it's not a bagel. Nobody matches them. Few even approach it.

    (5)
  • Kady D.

Nothing else will ever compare. By far the BEST bagels I've ever had. As I understand it pretty much everything is made in the back of the house. The bagels are always fresh and they have a great variety, their sandwiches also good. I have never been disappointed, and probably never will be!

  • Toni B.

For me, heaven is lox and cream cheese on a salt bagel from New York Bagel. I forgot just how incredible this was until I stopped by there yesterday to pick up some of my favorite bagels. I have been dreaming of New York Bagel from Arizona for a couple years now but I just haven't gotten a chance to stop by when I was in town. It was even better than I remembered. What the hell have I been doing going to Einstein's? It has been a mere placebo until I can get a real fix from people who know how to make delicious bagels the right way. Also - best part, I stopped in an hour before close and they had everything I needed. Next time I won't wait years before I get my next bagel fix!

Really good coffee and really good bagels. (obviously) And given the chance... get The Detroiter! Its my favorite! And dont get scared if they are busy, they are really good at getting people in and out of there!

This is my morning go-to place to get me moving. I love the bagels, they are always soft and tasty. My favorite is a garlic bagel with strawberry cream cheese and before you say eeeew, just try it so yummy. The garlic bagel has just the right amount of roasted garlic on top and the strawberry cream cheese has nice hunks of berry mixed in. My only real complaint is the line is often super long, which is great for them but not so great for me as I sometimes have to leave. The staff are pretty nice though I must say they talk to each other a heck of a lot, I can often hear at least 2 stories while waiting in line and it seems sometimes the customer is kind of just an annoying pause to their story (hence the 4 stars).

    (4)
  • Bernard H.

Amazing! I simply just love the bagels. So reminds me of growing up on the East Side of Detroit as a child and my Grandfather taking me for a fresh HOT BAGEL! Staff is always pleasant.

    (5)
  • Jonathan G.

By far the best bagels in metro Detroit. Get a dozen of these (my faves: everything and parmesan) and the store brand whipped cream cheese, and it's a guaranteed hit in the office. Had their hazelnut coffee for the first time this past weekend, and it's not so bad, either!

By leaps and bounds, New York Bagel has best tasting bagel in the area. I appreciate that the bagels here are smaller than some of the competitors. The last thing I want is a huge flavorless blob of dough. The best is when you get a fresh hot batch of bagels. I like to get a dozen, they keep pretty well and never last that long.

    (4)
  • Jessica Y.

Best bagels in town. Why arent there more bagel shops like this? Their cream cheese is also superb. As is the hazelnut coffee.

  • Karen B.

Rest assured, Kate S., those of us who have frequented NY Bagel know exactly how lucky we are to have this gem. I've lived across Woodward in Ferndale from it for 21 years and still treasure the location and quality of bagel they serve. While my kids were going through the city rec soccer program, we would run into all the families we knew on the team up there. Our local elementary used to hold morning and after school bagel sales. This place is a local institution and we love and appreciate them. If you're a bagel conneseiur this is the real McCoy. If you think your bagel place is the best, try NY Bagel. I know who will win.

what the shit???!!! i am on the move a lot. for the past 10 years i have averaged a new home every two years. this last move wasn't necessarily my happiest move, but i feel warm and fuzzy inside when i walk into new york bagel on my way to work at 6:30 am. this has only happened twice since i just moved here a week ago. but man. i needed it. i don't drink coffee, but they have tea for me. i stop here for the bagels. O fresh bagel toasted and slathered with butter, how do i love thee? they know how to make bagels. after being bagel deprived for the past 5 years and leaping up in bagel land to the top of the chain, i feel awesome. it's taken the sting out of moving. i am excited to find other stuff in the neighborhood if any of it is as good as this. they have have onion poppy buns that make for a fierce sandwich.

  • Haroun K.

This place had the best onion bagels I've ever tasted. Cities like New York and even Montreal boast about their bagels. But, just try a fresh-out-of-the-oven Onion bagel here, and you'll see what I'm talking about. They also make some great deli sandwiches, and sell homemade cream-cheese in a variety of flavors. The bagels are relatively inexpensive compared to Elaine's or Einsteins, and so much tastier. You can even eat there at the counter! I would advise getting an onion bagel, toasted, with a slice of Swiss and tomato. Get an Orangina to drink, and that's the stuff.

  • Diana T.

If you are on your way to work and are also driving north on Woodward just past 9 Mile, you need to stop at New York Bagel for a bagel and a coffee. Sometimes the wait is nothing and you can park on the street in front of the shop. Sometimes you have to wait 5-10 minutes and park on in the lot on the side. Either way, it's worth it. The bagels are gooey on the inside and crisp on the outside, the way a bagel is meant to be.

    (5)
  • Todd E.

Simply the best bagel I've ever had. Their coffee is not so good, and I'm not sure about their sandwhiches. I've only ever had the Everything Bagel with cream cheese. It's the ONLY place I will even order a bagel anymore.

  • Anthony H.

Moved to DC and I can't find anything like New York Bagels over there. I have tried 7 places so far. New York bagels are the only ones I have found that I can get a plain bagel with nothing and it tastes great! When I do want to put something on them when at home, toast, add butter and some guava jelly, yummy! Treasure this bagel shop!

    (5)
  • Mike F.

Their bagels are awesome and always fresh. I'm in love with their everything bagels and cinnamon raisin twists. It feels and tastes just like a New York bagel place with much better prices. Unfortunately the coffee is crap and parking is... Woodward, but all the food they make is top notch, it shouldn't be passed up!

    (4)
  • Elizabeth N.

When I return to Detroit to visit my family, I ask my mother to pick me up a lox and cream cheese on salt and a cinnamon twist. This makes coming home that much more delicious.

    (5)
  • Jay D.

I hit up New York Bagel Co. quite frequently, and am usually pretty pleased. They are not the thickest or most delicious bagels ever, but they do taste good. For the cost of them, 85 cents, the value is high. Once in a blue moon you get one that's a little hard, but that is pretty infrequent. Most are made fresh that morning. Don't bother showing up anytime after two pm because the bagels are stale by then.

    (3)
  • Bort P.

Seriously orgasmic bagels. I don't care where you get your bagels, these are better, on a different level. Crisp outside with a chewy inside, so freakin good. Get them in the morning when they're sill warm, obviously.

NYUM! Bagels 'n' home made cream cheese. I love this place. After years of being over the bagels at chain places, I finally discovered New York Bagel a couple years ago, and was an instant convert.

  • Louise A.

Best bagels in Michigan. After NYC bagels these are tops. Get some salt sticks, and some cream cheese and die happy. The east-side veggie is delicious, I can't go back home and not visit this place. Try the east-side with a "new" pickle and an Orangina..yum!

    (5)
  • Katia M.

Straight up, this place has the best bagels in Metro Detroit. At least, that I've ever had. One of their hot, fresh salt bagels is heavenly. They've got the authentic style of bagels that places like Panera or Einstein just can't deliver. Pick up a dozen and see for yourself!

    (5)
  • kate s.

all my life i thought i loved new york bagels, since my favorite bagels came from the new york bagel company in ferndale, mi. but i just went to NYC and the bagels there are crap compared to this place! people in detroit are lucky and they don't even know it. nothing better than the east-side veggie (i sometimes dream about it and wake up drooling and smiling) except maybe a salt stick and pickle on the side for later.
