The is the way a hole-in-the-wall, neighborhood bar should be. Recently remodeled, it is clean & friendly with good burgers, good prices on beer, and live music. Unlike many small bars with a grill in the back bar, it smells clean and you don't feel greasy when you leave. New TV's make this a great place to watch a game. The front patio makes it a great place to relax with an afternoon cocktail. The owner doing things like having a horse out front for people to get their pictures take on for the Kentucky Derby, make this a great place. I was there for the release party for the book, Bird Box - Don't open your eyes, by local author and musician Josh Malerman. Run out and buy it (Book Beat, B&N, Amazon, etc.) before they make it into a movie (it's in the works).

Great place !!!! New owner is so nice and cheerful . This is now my favorite bar in Ferndale . The bartenders really no what they are doing and the food is great . They just upgraded the sound system so seeing a live show here is next to perfect now . :)

The changes that have been made since the new owners have taken over are amazing! It's clean, organized, and the staff behind the bar is fantastic! So friendly and welcoming. We came in on a Sunday night and what do ya know? Bingo!! We played a game, had some moonshine, shot a game of skee ball, and had ourselves a fantastic time. My friend declared "this is my new bar". He couldn't have picked a better place!

The new ownership looks good on this place. A fresh coat of paint inside, anew sign and Tiger's colored patio furniture and it's like a whole new bar. Add to that the fact they now take credit and it's a winner all around.

They have ski ball. That's basically enough for me. But an added bonus, they have Vanilla Java Porter too. Casual hole in the wall place for a cheap beer.

I really like this place for a few different reasons. Mostly because it is close to home , its divey yet clean, the bartenders are friendly and I have seen not one but two different Ween cover bands there. I also like that the music room is separated from the bar area. I don't always like this but here I think it works well. They have 1 dollar hot dogs during Tiger games. #ween #boognish #booyabass

We came here for Metro Times Blowout. Saw three live bands on a Thursday night. The first impression is that I've just entered a 1970's basement. The lowish ceiling, the tile floor, the paneling but then... nice selection of bottled beer. Fast friendly bar service. Joined a table of strangers and had a great night! I wore my right forearm out hitting the fire button on the Galaga machine. Played some pinball too. Good people here all around. A good time was had by all and I would recommend that you check it out any night.

1.Cheap Beer. 2.Best Open Mic on the West Side(Wednesdays at 9pm with Brian Miller, who rules at the sound boards btw!) 3.Yummy Junk Food. 4.The Owner Looks Like Cher.

Love this place. Great, friendly clientele. Eric is awesome. He remembers your name right away and treats you like a friend. Good local bar. Will definitely return. Wish it were 5 minutes from the house.

Every time I'm in there, just the greatest time. No matter what, a show, comedy, or open mic, everyone is friendly. The bartenders and owner are so great to each and every customer. I recommend this place to everyone that is trying to get out of the Ferndale scene but still not leave Ferndale. Hayley and Jamie are both awesome people. Any day of the week is great, especially day drinking!

Great place for a cheap beer. They always have $2 cans or bottles of something and they usually keep decent craft brews on tap. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Haley, our bartender, made it a point to introduce herself and try to learn the names of the guys in my group. They also keep fresh, free popcorn in the corner to munch on while you drink. This is the cleanest divey local joint I've been to and I love it.

First time there was this weekend - early Saturday evening. Didn't have anything to eat, but bartender and owner were very friendly. Bottles of Bud & Miller Lite were $2 for happy hour! Not bad for a bar right on Woodward : ) Our server, as I said - very friendly, says she's horrible with names, but great with drinks! I believe it : ) I understand it is under new ownership and the person I was with agreed that things look quite improved from when he used to come in. They bring in a varied band line-up, so it's likely there's something for probably everyone at some point. Looks like a bar that's definitely on the right track. Will probably be by again soon, to check out the lunch/early afternoon atmosphere. Will likely update my post to more stars, as I learn more about the New Way - 2 bottles of Miller Lite in a 45 minute stay wasn't a lot to base my post on.

I didn't mention in my first post that I am a member of the Detroit Blues Society. We we holding our monthly meeting at New Way Bar. We had never met there before. I was so angry about the way I was treated Saturday night that I e-mailed several folks on the DBS board of directors to tell them what happened to me, and to suggest that we not hold any additional meetings there. It turned out that one of our board members had an unpleasant experience with a different employee Saturday night. He wasn't at all happy about the way he was treated, either. I haven't heard back from everyone on the board I communicated with, but the response from each board member who has replied to me is unanimous -- we won't be meeting there again.

Great place, went there for the first time for open mic night and was really surprised by how fun it was. I generally hate open mic nights and stay away from them but the singer in our band wanted to go there in hopes of setting up some future shows. She's pretty cool and puts up with a lot from us so I figured this one time wouldn't kill me. From the moment we showed up the staff was very friendly and accomodating and the guy running the open mic night was one of the most proffesional as well as being a really nice guy that I've ever met in 30 yrs of playing out. I have to mention that all the other performers playing last night were awesome! everytime someone new came up it was such a surprise at how good they sounded and wether they played a cover song or an original everyone in the place loved it. From the conversations I overheard our singer having it sounds like we should be back there soon, really looking forward to it. If you're looking for somewhere laid back to hang out with a great staff and hear some great local artists this is my first choice in the very crowded Ferndale / Royal Oak area of places to choose from.

This is one of my favorite bars. It's laid back, the bartenders and owner are great, and they have skeeball! I've also heard good things about their open night mic.

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP!!! The New Way is changing and is rapidly becoming my favorite bar in Ferndale to drink/hang out. They now take credit cards and have skeeball tournaments every Thursday. Reasonably priced drinks and good service...much better atmosphere with the new owner. Check it out!!!

Um... No drink discounts for bands ... Drinks over priced... Sound guy plays WRIF music no matter what the crowd is like... One "plus" is that there is Paul Stanley lookalike roaming around..So, if you play there... Please do a cover of "Shandi:" and dedicate it her...

Stopped in for the $5.00 burger, beer and fries. Was the best burger I've had in a while. Fries are fresh cut and really good, pretty much like the fries in a cup from the fair. It's got the good-ole-bar feel, but the bartender did a great job at making up feel welcome. It's not uppity like most of the bars in the area, just a easy place to hang out on a weekend afternoon. P.S. Make sure you take cash as they don't take cards.

  • Brian D.

Went there last week. Eric the bartender was the best.. The burger that he made me was top notch.. There bourbon selection was very good. The new owner has done a great job and will be back

Well, went down there to see one of my friends bands play. As far as ordering food, we didn't. The drinks were ok and reasonably priced. It is a tight hole in the wall with a wall seperating the bar from the bands playing. Overall, it was just ok....

    (2)
  • Otis M.

I think a lot of people come here to see their friend's bands play, we did! It's a fun place to have some drinks, some laughs and listen to some live music. The prices are reasonable. It's a gazzillion times better since the smoking ban.

  • Parisa K.

So this is a quaint, little (tiny) dive off Woodward. It's one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it locales. I actually didn't know it existed until my friend's cousin played a show there. I like it, though I think it may be cash only, so come prepared. There are two rooms, a few pool tables, and a decent size bar. I'm pretty sure that they have other local bands perform there from time to time, but I don't think this is the kind of place that fills up (at least never when I've been there). I wouldn't say this is a bar to go to when you want to be a social butterfly and meet people. I'm not sure if this is the type of place most people drop in on at random. I definitely think you should stop in and check it out sometime tho.

  • Scott B.

My band played here. The staff was great and treated me like family even though they had to wade though the crowd. Sound guy did a great job. Love it when we play there

  • Allison A.

My band played a show here. Everyone at the venue was rude. The sound guy did a terrible job. It was our worst experience as a band. I wish I'd know this before, but then after the show, everyone I know who has had experience with this bar said it's terrible. So there you go. It might be ok just to go hang out, but I strongly recommend to band to steer clear of this venue.
