As with all new restaurants, they are eager to please and overly attentive. The atmosphere is disconnected, and makes the large space feel awkward. There is no clear direction. Parking is an issue, the additional parking behind the building causes additional confusion, seeing the sign over the door still has the original Chinese restaurants name. You enter into a long maze like hall that walks you past the storage room. Very unattractive. This opens up to one of the confusing spaces, where you have you find someone to ask for direction. When you do get seated you are told someone will be with you. Not your waiter or waitress will be right with you. More like she wasn't sure whose station she sat us at. The chips and salsa were good. The menu although quite extensive had the same disconnected feeling. Buritto chicken, beef, shredded beef. Not Title beef, listing all the items you can have burrito, taco, chimichanga, quesadilla etc... And a repeat of the same for each additional meat type. Makes the menu frustrating. No pablanos! I was very surprised, and the waitress had no idea what they were when I asked if they offered them. I then saw a picture next to the tacos and inquired if they were authentic tacos. Not the fast food type. No lettuce, tomato, sour cream. But authentic with limes and radish. I had three soft chicken tacos . No radishes, had to ask for the limes. Which she did not bring so I went to bar and asked. The flavor was great. I was very impressed. My colleague ordered the steak chimichanga, it was very good. The beans were homade and the rice was very good. I would recommend this establishment.

Real authentic Mexican food finally hit Escanaba! The food is great! The service is fast! The employees are nice and the price is right! This place is now at least a once a week stop for me! ¡Buen provecho!

Service: Our waiter was very quick to bring drinks and menus and the food was out within minutes. The atmosphere was clean and the staff was friendly from what I saw. Food: I ordered the deluxe burritos with beef and really enjoyed them. Authentic taste and good quality ingredients. The salsa was good but the chips were a little crunchy for my taste. Overall: good atmosphere and staff along with the food, but a little pricey for the portions that are served.

This isn't a review as much as it is a suggestion to: 1. Post your menu, including your prices for food and drinks; and 2. Don't be shy about adapting Mexican recipes to include as many varieties of fresh lakefish as possible. Man does not live by tilapia, red snapper y mariscos alone!

Second visit...last time was a winter blizzard outside. This visit a rain downpour...lol Ok...chips & salsa a little kick and good, side of guacamole...good potion for the $...ordered an ala- carte steak quesadilla - a solid portion of steak, light on the cheese and a bit greasy. Did not order a drink but remembered the Margaritas will kick your butt. SERVCE- was an issue. Waiter told me they were short 3 wait people but he NEVER stopped back to my table until I had finished my meal...will give it one more try as first experience was very positive!

So it seems that things are changing at El Patrons. On the last two visits here it seems as though the staff is completely new and doesn't seem to well versed in the menu and the food quality doesn't seem to be as good as it was. I tend to not like writing bad reviews but this place isn't what it was when it opened and I don't want someone reading my first review and going in based on anything I said and thinking that I don't know what I'm talking about.

Good food and family friendly atmosphere. I had the enchiladas which were very good. The burritos are huge which was perfect for my hungry teenager, and the regular kids meals were a good value with plenty of options. Service was quick, friendly and the food was great. We will be sure to stop again.

Really delicious and authentic Mexican in Escanaba! The fried ice cream for dessert is not to be missed! The 2 Molcajete dishes (fajita and pork) were amazing! The other enchiladas and chimichangas were yummy, too! A definite great stop if you're a resident or a visitor.

A happy accident. We were just passing through town for the night. We missed our turn and found this authentic Mexican restaurant. We stopped because of the Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed. One of the best chili rellenos I've ever had.

My husband and I have gone 3 times now. Each time our food was excellent, fresh and served fast. The waiter was able to custom make a pineapple coconut drink for me with fresh fruit and I was impressed. The drink was strong (but not obnoxious) and made to order for my tastes. I got the steak fajitas and had enough to share some with my husband. He enjoyed the chips and salsa and his burrito platter. Fair prices and fast service. An awesome place to go when you are craving Mexican food.

Good! Food and salsa were great. House Margaritas were good but not great. Mix was weird. Service was quick . I Thought it was weird when I asked the waitress what drink she recommended, she said she was pregnant...lmao. I think she could have still recommended a favorite drink! Could not even tell she was. Good came out quick! It was delicious..

Ate here again for the 2nd time since opening and had a much better experience. No loud drunks in the dining room!!! Service was great, food was hot, and our meal was quite good. Had the Carnitas and asked to have Chile Verde sauce over the meat and they obliged and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it served this way. Very authentic dish!!! Glad to see they are doing well and improved since our last visit. I know quite a few people who dine here and I never hear any negative comments. Pretty rare for Escanaba. Margahritas are OK too , but could be better. JMO. This is our go to Mexican from now on. Keep up the good work!!! Slammer!!!

Went there for dinner last night with my wife. The chips and salsa was excellent. We ordered our drinks and food, it came quickly considering how busy it was. The food was outstanding, I got the Big Pancho Chimichanga, it was great. It is by far the best Mexican place around. I travel a lot all over the country for work, the only other place I've had comparable Mexican food is in Miami and Phoenix. My wife got the fried ice cream for desert, I tried it.. It was great. Over all everything was great.. Even the bill, dinner, drinks and desert for two was only $32! My new favorite place in town!

Despite being filled to capacity on a Friday night, we were seated quickly. Wait staff were responsive and courteous. Food came out quickly, and was excellent! Fresh, authentic tastes the area has been lacking, on par with what would be expected from an urban restaurant. Huge portions, good drinks for surprisingly low prices. Pleasantly surprised, and will come back soon!

When traveling home over the holiday's, I stopped at El Patron and wasn't disappointed! The Best Real Mexican food I've ever had in the U.P. It was far better than Red Mesa Restaurant or Miguel's Mexican located in Tampa Fl, which is saying something because they are two of my favorite 's goto spots. The menu is extensive with some of my favorites. I ate most of my wife's tamales and orderd a second order of pork goodness and washed it down with a Premium Margarita-way too good! Didn't finish all my fajitas texan just didn't have the room. I highly recommen this restaurant when traveling through Escanaba area.

I have given this place three tries with the hope that I keep having someone with an off day as my server. No such luck. My last time there we were ignored by our server for the better part of an hour. I had to ask twice for a highchair. My 4 year old finally got his own booster seat. My food was gummy and unappetizing and over all an awful experience. The server apparently found his phone more important than doing his job. Very frustrating for someone who really wants to love this place.

Finally real Mexican food in Escanaba. We have been there 3 times and every time is excellent! We moved here from Colorado, and this is the closest you are going to come to real Mexican food.

My wife and daughter and I just stay here tonight. this was our first time here.we were extremely impressed with the service. Keely was our server and she was great. The food was not the best Mexican food I've ever had, but it was very good considering I'm in Escanaba Michigan. The portions were very plentiful, and the food was served nice and very hot. I was also impressed with the freshness of the food as well as the guacamole was some of the best I've had in a long time. Compared to Ferdinands, El Patron is much better. We will definitely come back here again.

My husband and I were huge fans of this restaurant when it first opened, It had some of the best food in town, but our last visit was really disappointing. First there was a long hair in the salsa, gross but it happens, we just asked for a new bowl. When our dinners came I saw that my usual seafood dish had about 4 shrimp and the rest was imitation crab, a recent change that I was sad to see since the price was still the same. While I and the two others with us received our food in a decent amount of time, my husband had to wait for his fajitas and finally got them as the three of us were all finished with our leftovers boxed up. We thought maybe we would get a little something taken off our bill for the inconvenience, but when we received the check they actually added additional cost for the three extra tortillas, something we had never been charged for in the past. After explaining this to the waitress and the manager we got $1.50 taken off our check for the tortillas but were told that we shouldn't expect that in the future. We asked if there had been a recent change in management and our waitress said in the last month there were changes made. It was disappointing to have this experience at what used to be our favorite restaurant in town. Hopefully the new management can get the food and service back where it used to be.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
