Ann Arbor connoisseurism (snobbery?) is seeping into surrounding communities, but Dexter has one firm bulwark against it in the Dexter Bakery. Interior is a blend of pre-Depression woodwork and 1960s linoleum, but atmosphere is beside the point. This isn't a coffeeshop where people hunch over laptops for hours or linger over novels. Though there are a few tables, mostly people come in, grab their donuts, and head out to wherever they're going. And those donuts are fantastic. I've only had a few, but they're always fresh, never oily, soft but not chewy and they always leave you wanting more (another good reason the place doesn't invite lingering). In some locales, their makers could label them "artisinal" and keep a straight face, but Dexter isn't one of those. Its bakery gives you an idea of what you might lose if your town becomes one.

Holy donuts, Batman. Old school and basic, the inside of Dexter Bakery is unassuming until you sink your teeth into their baked goods. It's only then you can appreciate a real donut and a real pastry. I took a huge box of goodies back to work and the following was reported: "This custard goodness with chocolate on top is as good as sex, but you know, my wife's pregnant right now.", "This was exactly the sugar fix worth ruining my diet for." "Damn you, Mary, I'm trying to be good." "This chocolate croissant will be a nice dessert for lunch." "What the hell woman? You know I'm trying to diet." And, me, silent because my teeth were sinking into a cheese pretzel. The staff is always nice here and happy to help you pick out a box of goodness to bribe anyone with.

Love their cream filled donus, seasonal donuts as well. Just remember they don't accept credit cards - a serious blow when your co-workers are expecting you to come back with a dozen ;)

I'm a fan. This place is WONDERFUL. If you have to be up n' at 'em- stopping in here at the start of the day will guarantee to perk up your mood. The staff is friendly and fun. This place is a joy to visit, nice atmosphere with lots of regulars. Lots of seating room to drink coffee or tea, watch tv and read the paper. I find that it's a great place for the community, constantly saying hello to friends you run into, and make new ones! Kid friendly too, the staff is very good with kids and let them goof around, tell jokes and just be entertaining. Of course, you can expect a long line on a Saturday morning. If you get there past 10am, some items may be sold out. Typically the wait isn't too bad, but if you're in a hurry, call and order ahead, for pick up.

What can I say other than--BEST GLAZED DOUGHNUTS EVER! Man, I DREAM about those things. If my wife is in bad mood for some reason, doughnuts from the Dexter Bakery are a sure way to start heading down a better path. The other doughnuts are very good as well, but in my opinion nothing tops the glazed. Our family regularly drives the 20+ minutes to get some. As a note, they are sold individually rather than by the 1/2 or dozen so don't get caught up like I do and order twice as many as you can possible eat. And, yes, I have determined where that line is. :) Also it is good to get there in the morning as they sometimes run out and only order what you will eat that day as the lovely nuggets of joy do go quickly stale. One final note--AMAZING paczki during that time of year. That's all they make for 2-3 days and they can't keep them in stock. They are that good!

If you come here for one thing, it should be the apple fritters. They're not gooey, but instead the apples are baked in. It has a nutty crunch to it even though there aren't any nuts in it. The pretzels are great too. There's also a very enthusiastic woman who works there. She's the best. Another reason to stop by and visit! Their website has their entire menu with prices as well.

I am very biased about this place. Growing up in Dexter, my Dad would sometimes take me in after my haircut and get some special goody. Back then one half was the Bakery while the other side of the room was meats, liked cured sausages and jerkys. The meat department is long gone. Just a memory to those of us in our 40's or older. But the Bakery is still as good as it ever was. If you need a reason to come here I will say that the must thing to try are the split creme filled long johns. any other place you go for one you find a small amount of the yummies inside. Usually two little pockets with a big old dry spot in the center. But at Dexter they take the time to cut there's open like a hot dog bun, then stuff it full of creme. OH MY GOD! I want one now! Why did I even bring this up???//

Passed a couple of times and finally had to stop. It is quite small, dingy, but a number of tables to enjoy coffee and more. Maybe got there a little late to get the best choices but did get a few donuts and their pretzel sticks. Don't know if the pretzels were a Saturday item as with other bakeries. The chocolate cake were some of the best choc. cake donuts I've found, with a rich chocolate flavor and not overly sweet, hubby liked the buttermilk and the raised/glazed were what one would expect but not the slight crispiness that i love. DID NOT LIKE the fact that the half dozen were squished into one bag. The pretzels were good but not great. Froze most to use as hot dog rolls. Also got a couple cherry coconut cookies. They were just OK, obviously made with shortening not butter. Over all the selection was limited, very little bread. Over all prices I'm not sure about - $15 for 6 donuts, a dozen pretzels and two cookies???

The mere thought of Dexter Bakery donuts makes me salivate, and I'm not even a huge fan of sweets. We stop in only on special occasions to prevent massive weight gain, but our visits here have been nothing short of amazing. There is something on the menu for everyone, even those with the most severe sweet tooth - my husband can attest. Everything is fresh and doughy, staff is friendly and the atmosphere is what I would have expected it to be fifty years ago (it's a good thing). The drawback? They do not accept debit/ATM cards. Do yourself a favor and walk to the nearest ATM machine. It'll be well worth it.

The Dexter Bakery has amazing, fresh apple fritters with the best coffee in town! I love taking a walk down here from my office to take a breath of fresh air and have a delightful snack!

Blew into the "Bakery" (as it is known in Dex-Town) on a Saturday morning after a little cross country skiing at Hudson Mills. Got a killer whiff of the freshly baked goods inside as I walked through the door and straight into 1958. This place is like a time capsule. This is a thriving example of small town living that has done it right for years and refuses to change. Cake donuts dressed up with real home-made frosting under the glass of century-old quarter-sawn oak display cases...just like they did it in 1958. We are here today however, not for the donuts, but for the pretzels rolls filled with pepperoni and cheese...a snack-sized treat known only to locals that will fix your craving for a trip to Papa Romano's. Four Yums.

I absolutely love this place! From its antique/historical feel to sharing a table with local patrons. The donuts are fantastic, the stuffed pretzels and muffins are delicious. This is why you might see people lined up out the door on a sunny Saturday morning. However, I took a chance ordering a cake for my daughter's birthday. I didn't give them much to go on but said make it pink and girly. They nailed it! And all of my family raved about how good the cake was. Next up was my son's birthday and his only request was a minecraft cake. They nailed it again and by far exceeded my expectations!! I'm hooked and have had to part ways with my old favorite, super-sized Costco cakes. Dexter bakery has all of my business.

Stopped here after church... I had only been here once. The smell of this place is enough to make you gain weight!! I got a glazed doughnut for both my husband and myself. They were wonderful! Light and fluffy, but filling. Sweet, but not too sweet. It looked like they had any kind of doughnut you could imagine... Crullers, fritters, filled, not filled, fry cakes, glazed, chocolate, fruit, nuts, no nuts, etc.... They also have savory items. They offered pretzels sticks which looked outstanding! They also offered pretzel rolls with ham and cheese, and pepperoni and cheese. I bought a ham and cheese roll for my lunch and am looking foward to trying it. It appears they offer home made decorated cakes... Note, they only take cash. No debit or credit.

In business since 1915, eh? They must have survived or selling more than donuts and cookies. It doesn't seem to sell enough for such a large space. Very old looking, so lots of history. But I was hoping for breads, cakes, pies, you know, BAKERY stuff. Had a scone and cup of coffee (styrofoam cup, ugh). Scone was quite tasty. But I don't know if I want to risk that dangerous cross walk again just to get to a donut shop; even with the pedestrian crosswalk those right-turn-on-red cars don't care if you're in the crosswalk so be forewarned and fleet of foot!

On our way to Hell (literally, we were going to the little town of Hell, Michigan) we drove through Dexter and this was the only bakery on the way. Afraid I would have to die starving I stocked up and got one of everything they had, the owner was pretty happy with me for this, I don't think she has seen out of towners -Ever! There was a group of kids there, it's a big bakery and they seemed to be doing homework, guess it's the town hang out. It's a really big bakery with a good selection and suprisingly not that cheap, I paid over $20 for donuts and cookies, the best deal and as it turns out the best tasting was the day old muffins 2 for 1 with real cream cheese and raspberrys, those were amazing, also they make their own protein bars which were not bad. The rest is average, not bad at all, descent cookies, donuts are fine, god even, but not worth the drive as there is nothing around the area at all, and I mean nothing!

I'm a total doughnut snob. I've eaten at bakeries everywhere, even chain places, and I've never found doughnuts I like better. Perhaps I'm biased because I went to high school here and would often wait in the line on Tuesdays to bring in a dozen raised chocolate frosted doughnuts for my friends, but lets pretend I'm not. I wouldn't say I like them if it weren't true. The people who owned the bakery when I was in high school no longer own it, and the new owners have updated and repainted the building. The entire place is brighter, more open and very welcoming. But, very best part, the recipes haven't changed. The doughnuts and pretzel sticks are the same they were ten years ago. Also, they now make cakes and cake make literally anything you desire. It's fantastic and everything is so yummy. And now I want doughnuts. Ps- cash only. Most items are $0.80 each.

Some of the best donuts in all of Michigan. Very friendly staff with a great selection of donuts. pastries and giant cookies. Their chocolate cake donut is killer. Get there early when the Ann Arbor Art festival is on to get the best selection.

I've lives in Dexter my entire life. There has been many different owners, the current are my favorite. Such a sweet woman. Try the pretzel sticks & the cream filled long johns, they are the best. The cakes are awesome when you order them. I think the ones on hand aren't as good. I love the Dexter bakery!!!

I love this bakery. I remember bicycling from Ann Arbor to Dexter on Saturday mornings and stopping here for a donut! It's still exactly the same, even the interior hasn't changed much at all. What is really cool is that it is now owned by a Vietnamese family now. How interesting to see a small town bakery barely changed with new cultural influences. Don't be disappointed though because your not going to find any fusion baked goods here. I don't normally like fruit with my desserts but I have to say the apple fritter is what they are known for and now as an adult I have to say it tastes really good. This is also the type of place where your going to want to try everything. My friend who is genius bought a bag of stuff and took a bit from everything. Smart! I should have done the same and so should you.

Dexter Bakery is an independently-owned and unpretentious little small-town bakery. The building is old and has that old-fashioned small town feel to it. They have racks of bread, donuts and other pastries, a couple of tables and chairs. Some old-timers were sitting at a table eating donuts and drinking coffee and gossiping when I visited recently. Prices are pretty good, and the servings are generous. My husband despises Dunkin' Donuts and refers to them as "Dinky Donuts" because their goods are so small. The cake donut with chocolate frosting that I got from Dexter Bakery was pretty big, tasted very fresh and cost me 65 cents. I didn't have a lot of cash on me, so I didn't get anything else, but I was intrigued by their big loaves of bread with dried fruits baked into them. Next time I'm in Dexter, I'll make sure I have more cash so I can get some more baked treats from this bakery.

Dexter Bakery is everything that you want out of a small hometown bakery. I don't live in Dexter, but if I did I could see myself spending a lot of weekend mornings picking up doughnuts and pastries. Sarah W. is right, no fusion baked goods here, or anything fancy for that matter, just your straight-up staple baked goods: doughnuts, cookies, fritters, bread, etc. As a pastry connoisseur, I frequently lament the fact that there are not enough solid bakeries in general since most people have become accustomed to chains like Dunkin' and Tim Hortons. My husband got a blueberry filled doughnut and I got a pumpkin cut-out sugar cookie (since it was right before Halloween). Delicious! The inside is a little hokey, but it doesn't really matter. If anyone is familiar with Dom Bakeries in Ypsilanti, you know that the inside tells you nothing about how tasty the baked goods are. I don't frequent Dexter very often, but I'll surely be back next time I'm in town.

Dexter Bakery preserves the traditions of old small town bakeries. The donuts and sweet rolls are especially enjoyable. Good and also nostalgic. It's not pretentious or arty about being retro, either, because it never stopped being what it is. If you can ride a bike from Ann Arbor along Huron River Drive to Dexter, then you will earn enough calories for a donut. At least that's how we look at it.
