The most beautiful place to get a coffee in Detroit. The mezzanine of the Guardian Building is spectacular. Great place to take someone from out of town. But be forewarned it caters to the financial district crowd, so it's only open business hours weekdays. Closed evenings and weekends.

Stella has just completed a make-over that makes their space more navigable and customer-friendly. They're still serving great coffee, Russell Street Deli soups and Avalon baked goods.

Good sandwiches. Be sure to get there before 12:30 to ensure there are some left over. I am big fan of their peanut butter brownies and other huge desserts. Your costs can add up fast, so be cognizant of this when you go!

They have ice now. It's true I have a soft spot for Stella, especially when you have chalkboard art and groovy music. And not to mention the great coffee..I love this place!

5 stars based on coffee alone. I have not had lunch, but I've been going alot of mornings to get coffee. They open at 7am in the Guardian building and are always helpful, nice and friendly in the morning. They make a great latte and really have been helping to get my morning going. Also, the latte is cheaper and just as good as a Starbucks one.

I've never written a review of a restaurant upon only one visit, but I'm compelled. Bought a sandwich for lunch that was so gross I threw it away after one bite. What I thought was going to be a fresh made sandwich "special" of the day, was instead pre-made from the cold case, then slapped onto a grille, veggies and all. Flavorless turkey slathered in mayo with hunks of cheese. The lettuce was slimy and the pickles managed to be brown and black as opposed to green. All this for $10. No thanks.

I have not had the coffee...but I did have a grilled cheese with artichokes and chicken....the chicken was nasty...bad texture. I paired my half a sammie with some baked potato soup...which was good. I got it for the home made "crackers"...which were big chunks of stale bread...blah. Pitched it. I did like that you can get some san pellegrino here! They were playing some cool music....I was a little confused becuase their webpage lists some great sandwhiches, but I only saw the sandwiches on the chalk board. There is no where to sit...well, there are two chairs...so I got mine to go and enjoyed rowland's internet connection. I soaked up the guardian building, surfed the web and saw the funny tourists ohh and awh.

Absolutely love Stella! I come here for lunch at least 2-3 times a week since I work down the street. Soup is freaking amazing and the "crackers" are the best. They're more piece of cut up bread that have been grilled with salt and olive oil, but perfect for dipping. I don't usually get the specialty sandwiches since they're MASSIVE (the chicken pesto is enough to eat 1/2 for lunch and 1/2 for dinner) Coffee's good, but expensive. Baked goods are to die for. Come during the autumn and you can get wonderful pumpkin muffins, but they usually have berry and banana nut everyday. Head up the steps for free wifi and seating.

I give it 5 stars for what it is, a great place to pick up a fresh cup of coffee (but not to sit down and have one because there isn't really any space to do so). If you are in the heart of downtown by the river, stop by the lobby of Guardian Building and treat yourself! The pecan bar is scrumptious and not overly sweet. When you choose a blend not already made, your cup of joe is individually brewed upon ordering in a nostalgically chic way right in front of you.

See my Rowland Cafe review, a quick stop version. Good for grabbing a coffee and a treat.

This is a great place for coffee and a sandwich, but you'll want to get there early because the sandwiches sell out fast. Little pricey but if you're planning on getting a sandwich downtown, this place beats the Jimmy John's and Quizno's across the street in both price and quality.

This business is located in the lobby of the Guardian Building. Similar to its sister location in the Fisher Building, your palate will enjoy the coffee and smoothies, delicious treats for your sweet tooth, and various sandwiches. Additionally, seating is also provided for you to chill, read the paper or people watch. Its nice to know that this place exists given that Starbucks bailed on downtown Detroit. Try it, you'll probably like it.
