Disappointing! Mexican Village is the place to see. The food was bland. Any dish that improves by 50% when salt is added isn't for me. The salsa was good. The chips were warm and fresh. The meat was tender and juicy. The flavor was just...blah. There are better options.

Mexicantown is a truly unique area of Detroit. I enjoy going down here for great mexican food. Fun area that not enough people of Michigan visit.

Great margaritas. Great fajitas. Been there forever. Fits the neighborhood perfectly.

Great place to get some food poisoning, about as authentic as taco bell. But hey its Detroit and they take canadian money so it must be good. Booooo

Overall, the food is awesome. I have tried the flaming cheese appetizer which is by far the best i've tried out of other mexican style restaurants. I also had the chimicongas (I think I spelt that wrong). Which are also very good and comes with gucamole. Typically, dishes with gucamole (at least in canada) are always more expensive. The portions are massive, and you could never eat all of the food on you're plate. The prices are very good as well.

I lived in LA for 2 years, and now the closest I have to Mexican food in my town is Taco Bell. I went here to meet a friend after being down at the Joe and was thoroughly impressed. Loved their margaritas, loved their (warm) chips and salsa, and especially loved their steak fajitas!! Portions are ginormous and the smaller portion is more than enough for 2 hungry people. Guacamole is really really good. I've been back a few times since then. Every single time, I walk away full and buzzed. Success.

I say a prayer before most meals that goes something like this "Dear God. Let the food go down easy and come out hard." God did not answer my prayer this time. My friend tried to convince me that Detroit had more "authentic" mexican food than where I'm from - Texas. The Texas THAT BORDERS MEXICO! The chicken enchiladas I had were actually pretty tasty. The Meunster Cheese covering them like pizza cheese was a little odd. Hot Sauce? tame. About 3:30AM the beast awoke. Pukey. Montezuma's Revenge. Sweating. Numbness and tingling in my extremities?!?! Crying? Oh, yes. It's been two days, and I'm still feeling the effects of Detroit's "Authentic" Mexican food.

I live in NYC where good Mexican food is hard to find. Whenever I'm in Michigan I go to Mexicantown Restaurant for the best damn chimichungas I've ever had (granted, I've only eaten them on the East Coast and Midwest...so what do I know). But still. I'm already looking forward to eating here next week at 9 a.m. when I get off my plane (hey, a girl's gotta squeeze in the mexican food whenever she has time!).

Absolutely delicious Mexican cuisine. Highly recommend the flaming cheese appetizer along with the world famous flaming fajitas!

Worst restaurant in Mexican Town....DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!!!!! The food was cold and was not fresh. My the waiter tried to argue with my husband, when my husband stated that his food was not hot. POOR SERVICE. The manager refused to talk to us because she never we had several complaints. I will not be back. I regret ever giving this restaurant a try.

It wasn't a busy night when we went but it wasn't dead either. We were seated and ordered a half liter of Margaritas which was delicious. Food? Not so much. This would be the first time I've been out to eat but couldn't finish my food because it was so questionable. I ordered the chicken taquitoes (they're in the menu under a different name). I strongly believe that it was not chicken that i was . It was finely shredded and doused and some sauce and didn't taste like chicken. Super bland rice and baby food beans which by the way is usuallyy favorite part of a Mexican cuisine meal. Though the service was kind I will not be back. I expected authenticity without the mystery meat.

We went to Mexican town for lunch. We ordered guacamole, chicken fajitas and tacos. The food was stale and bland. Instead of strips, the chicken fajitas contained a mixture of large cubes, some of them cold, and pulled chicken drown in oil. The pile of chicken on top of some peppers and onions was not edible. Guacamole had tomatoes, some onion pieces but no lime, garlic or salt. Did I say bland? Service was minimal and unhelpful. Our server did not welcome us, or explained the menu, or made any recommendations, or smiled even once. Zero hospitality. I visited Mexico several times and had an excellent gastronomic experience, This place does NOT do the Mexican cuisine any justice.

This is my favorite restaurant in Mexican Town. Yes it's named after the actual town. The combination platters are the best route to go to try a little bit of authentic food that they offer. I personally prefer combination C, you get one of each taco, taquito, tostada, enchilada with rice and beans. the flaming fajitas topped with cheese is so big that three people can feast off of that. Service was outstanding from the minute we walked in we were greeted promptly and the server was exceptional. Every little request that we had, she was on top of it! One thing missing from the dessert menu is a fried ice cream topped with your choice of topping, you can always get the flan anywhere. Don't know why the Mexican restaurants I go to don't carry it, is it because it's pricey? Either way, it needs to be put on. If you haven't tried this place, I recommend it, my out of town guests love our Mexican Town compare to others in many states.

This place is great! Have gone a few times ...once after a Lions game, once after an evening out at the Auto Show. It's probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in the D. The fajitas are top notch, the chips and salsa are filling and the enchiladas will consume your taste buds! The frozen margaritas are among the best I have had anywhere and the service is pretty good. The fried ice cream is pretty great, too! My sister ordered it on her birthday and I had more than a spoonful or two. I like the way the restaurant looks inside, and there is sitting outdoors too. It's fun to go in the late afternoon/evening and get a more intimate vibe. There is also a lot of parking. If you love Mexican food then this place is a MUST. It is one of Detroit's best restaurants overall, and my favorite in all of Mexicantown. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure.

This place is no big deal. Really, I don't see the draw. I didn't even know it was possible for Mexican food to be bland? Is there a such thing as Lutheran Mexican? If so, this is it. Were's the spices? The mole', the kick, the pizazz, the flavor, the taste? This is pedestrian Mexican safely homogenized for suburbanites pleasures and watered down for those wanting tacos and burritos with iceberg lettuce, mounds of chili powder hamburger and alkaline sauces. One strong point: the portions are huge (but the taste little).

My quest for Detroits finest Mexican food got a step closer but didn't end at Mexican town. The food is pretty delicious but the lack of vegetarian options was disappointing. The attached bar on the first floor is really lively and the margaritas are pretty well made. The tender cactus is recommended!

Yes, that's what the neighborhood is called, and yes, that's what the restaurant is called. I came here with some co-workers on a visit to Detroit. The food was decent, and inexpensive, and the margaritas were strong and delicious. Good spot.

Food is not as great as it used to be . The tamales especially are dried out and not that good. This happened on three separate occasions. Finally we stopped ordering from Mexican Town and now go to Evie's across the street! This place does have amazing Salsa though!

Man, have I been longing to review this horrible joint. My girl and I decided to dine here for a drunch, dinner lunch, before my class, adding 1700, so we get seated, and they didn't even alert the staff, the tying lady just happened to see us, and then they rushed us out so under the light from lunch crap, and being that I never send food back, and we were in a hurry, I didn't grin, but I tolerated it. Left no tip, and will never, ever come back here. I'll tell people walking in this place sucks. I felt a certain type of way because my girl is Mexican and I'm black, but maybe that's just me, but we both felt mistreated, and not welcome. Screw this joint. Blah.

It's official. As a hospitality consultant I have seen a lot of really bad waitstaff. But today we were served by the Holy grail of morons. This chic should never be allowed to even eat in a restaurant much less work in one. Allow me to elaborate. We sat for 10 minutes while she chatted to another server before ever greeted us. She returns with a tiny dirty tray with our margaritas and makes my husband move our chips so she can set the whole tray on our table telling us "hope you don't mind but my hands are shakey so you'll just have to deal. She kept trying to talk us out of the guacamole because "it's like 7 dollars!" The restaurant does not have hot sauce. How is it possible that in in a Mexican restaurant and there's no hot sauce or jalapeños? The second round of drinks did not go better. The waitress dumped about a quarter of it on the table said "oops my bad" and walked away leaving the table covered in Margarita. There were so many staff standing around in the dining room talking and carrying on we had to walk around them to get to the restroom. They were so loud we couldn't hear each other talk at our table. The final straw was having to watch two waitstaff kids each other in the middle of the dining room.

No bueno. I love Mexican food. Know how I judge Mexican food? Tamales. If you make good tamales, you can make good Mexican food. These tamales? Sub par is being generous. Texture was off - dry and crumbly. Cornmeal stuck to the husk. Pork filling wasn't very flavorful. Plus, they were pretty small. Service was ok. We were seated quickly and greeted at the door by the manager. My advice? Keep walking.

My very favorite mexican restaurant in Detroit! Wait time far less than most places, and the food is very good. Prices are reasonable, and the tables aren't jammed as close together as some of the restaurants down there.

  • Eric S.

Margarita was overly sweet and had no booze. Chicken in taco salad was grey (and very salty. I truly think it was from a can.) Refried beans tasted canned and rice tasted like a box mix. Flour tortilla was microwaved - you couldn't cut thru it. Chips were fresh and good. Service nice. No reason to ever go back.

I think I have had it all here from the flaming fajitas, the enchiladas,to the margaritas, and the sopapillas. Great food. Great employees. The mini chimis are super yummy too. I am a repeat customer for a reason!

Disappointments. No draft beer, no in-house made sangria and no patron margarita. The chips were thick and had a lard taste. The salsa was bland with a mild hint of cilantro. My order of Shrimp Ranchero contained very few shrimp. Maybe five, six at the most. The refried beans had that same lard taste as the chips. Waitstaff needs some coaching on customer skills. No next time here. No thank you!

I live a block from the main Mexicantown drag, so I eat a lot of Mexican - and have tried a lot of Mexican restaurants. This place is nice enough (and more stucco than you can shake a stick at), but the food was standard. It's pretty hard to stand out from the pack when you have 80 kazillion restaurants serving the same style and same menu options in your area. In short, this place is totally serviceable without being exceptional. They do have at least one stupid rule, though: You want the taco lunch special? Well you can have chicken and cheese or beef and cheese, but not meat-free, cheese tacos. Say what? The waiter said something about how the "lunch special tacos" are all pre-made. Mmmm, sounds fresh. Maybe these flaming fajitas are worth a try.

I come here for one dish and one dish only, the famed flaming fajitas. I like the fajitas at Mexican Town Restaurant because they do them right. It's marinated skirt steak, grilled with bell peppers, onions and tomatoes. There's just something about the marinade... it's that good. I also pop for the melted queso blanco on top. While this destroys any chance for authenticity it's a delicious way to go. Otherwise this restaurant is fairly unremarkable. It's predictably dark, the servers are mostly gringos and sometimes have a chip on their shoulder, but service is good enough and damn do they have some cheap lunch specials. $3.95 for two enchiladas, rice and beans. Chips are fresh and in house. Salsa in unremarkable. I rate this place three stars for everything but the flaming fajitas, which get an easy 4 and a half in my book.

Worst place ever I went for lunch with my sister we both have new baby's on are way in we were both struggling to hold the door for each other to get in while a gentlemen outside watched while we waiting for a table the guy comes in and happens to be the manager rude man! While going to the bathroom to Chang my baby's diaper I realize no changing table! This places is not kid friendly they didn't have any baby slings they flipped a dirty high chair upside down they didn't have a lunch menu available and no dink specials what so ever this place is over priced unprofessional and the food is not that good at all and they are stingy with the liquor in their drinks!!

Hands down where you'll find the best Mexican food in Detroit/Michigan. Oddly enough, no matter where I go I always compare my mexican to Detroit :) I love how they make their quesadillas (I have not had them like this anywhere else)... they make them like tacos... you have your flour tortilla, guac, jalapenos, and lots of cheese...quesadillas don't get any better than this and NO WHERE makes them like this except Detroit...if you have found somewhere else that does please let me know.... I have serious cravings for them since I have lived out of the area for some time! Great place to go eat if your going to do anything downtown. It's not a far drive to all the sporting events, and totally worth it!

We came in as a party of 15 with a reservation and they split our party up into two tables. The food was gross. Mexican Town used to be a GREAT place to go but as my friend Bob said these places are always packed so they just don't care about giving good customer service.

I hate to do this because I like this place, I really do. I like the inside, I like the staff, but the food was just BLAND. Four of us went--I had chile rellenos (blech) rice and beans very bland, corn tortillas that accompanied it dry and crumbly. My husband had a ground beef burrito and reported the same thing. The ground beef there is greasy and not seasoned well. My daughter had cheese enchiladas and said they were mediocre. The only one happy with their meal was my son who got a mexican sandwich with chunky pork. I tasted his and had to agree...his was good! But 25% is unfortunately a failing grade. Also got a guacamole appetizer which we didn't finish because it was so bland, and that is unheard of in my family. But the service was incredible so the waitress got an extra big tip...so sorry to have to give it a poor review!

I expected more... I grew up in the Detroit area, but I had never been to Mexicantown. After looking at the reviews for Mexican Town Restaurant, I was sure to have an average or hopefully above average experience. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. The chip were OK, but blazing hot after just having come out of the fryer. The guacamole appetizer was actually half guacamole and half diced tomato. For my entree, I was going to get the Mexican plate (3 different authentic dishes), but my server did not recommend I order it. I ended up getting the beef burritos, which were actually pretty good. Service was slow, and we had to flag down the waitress for additional tortillas chips which we had already asked for 10 minutes earlier. The biggest issue I have with the Mexican Town Restaurant was our liter of frozen margaritas. First off, it was not frozen. Second, it was a pale green milky color and had the consistency of an melted smoothie. The margaritas were the worst I have ever had, and I know that is a bold statement. Overall, I am not likely to return to the Mexican Town Restaurant on my next visit to the area.

When it comes to margaritas... I'm not that hard to please. And by not that hard to please I mean REALLY not that hard. But the margs here are just baaaaaaddd. I couldn't even finish one! I got the taco salad with ground beef and it was medium. It was probably 80% meat which was fine until I got to the puddle of grease at the bottom of the bowl. The portions are giant though. And for being the apparent queen of Mexican Town, this place was pretty dead. But the service was fast. Almost too fast. I didn't event have a chance to stuff my face with chips and salsa.... always my favorite part of getting Mexican food!

My first Mexican food since California! I went down on a monday night and it was a nice, not to busy or to empty. The chips and salsa very super fresh, chips hot out of the fryer and the salsa is fantastic for mild. Good flavor and very fresh tasting. The waitress was very nice, and though she was busy I never felt ignored. I ordered a combo A which had a taco, flauta and enchilada with beans and rice. They were all very good. I would get it again. Ordered the Flan for dessert even though I was full, and it was AMAZING!! order the FLAN! Very creamy, not too gelatonous or slimy.

I have to be honest. If it weren't for the fact that I needed to check this place off of our list (in our quest to go to every Mexican restaurant in M-town), I would never have gone here. The service was superb, the portions enormous (which is the only justification I can come up with for the higher than normal prices) and the atmosphere nice. The chips and salsa were totally meh and the queso flameado, tasty, but nothing special. My Tacos El Carbon were loaded with steak, and tons of food for the money, but the flavor? Blah. My husband said his chicken soup was just okay and my friend said the chicken in her taco was weird. My margarita was pretty tasty, so that's something! I have no doubt that I'll never go back here again. If you must go to one of the large restaurants in that tiny little 2 block area that people consider Mexican Town, my vote will always go to Los Galanes, but if you want something really special and tasty, skip them all and head a little bit further in to SW (i.e., down Vernor) and I guarantee you'll find better food there for way less money.

My Daughter brought me here for my birthday lunch. It was a non game day Saturday for the Tigers and the restaurant as well as the area was very quite. We had our choice of tables and service was quick, almost to quick. I did not get a chance to over eat the chips and salsa before the meal came. They were served hot with two salsa's, one mild the other medium. I would have preferred hotter, but did not ask if they had one. I had the wet burrito, beef, it was very good, more than I could eat. She had the Chimmy and also liked it taking half of it home. Parking was just across the street , not fenced but seemed safe. Total for the two of us was $21.00 and I was full for the rest of the day. Good menu with the basic American Mex choices and a nice list of specialty Mex dishes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love Mexican food. While visiting friends in Windsor, we were treated to dinner at Mexican Town Restaurant in Detroit's Mexicantown. The exterior and interior reminds me of the place Patrick Swayze worked at in Roadhouse. A guy who looks like Gary Busey runs the hostess booth and uses a Bob Barker-style microphone to announce when tables become available to those waiting on the list. We didn't wait long, because although very busy, this place is huge and has two floors or seating. Delicious chips and guacamole and the most delicious and gigantic (like the circumference of a pumpkin) plate of melted cheese with chorizo pieces throughout. Delicious. Where's the defibrillator? Then I also had flautas which were also amazing, but with the two appetizers I was already so full I didn't eat much and what I did eat I forced down. I've never been to Mexico but the experience felt really authentic, i.e. lots of hard-working, Spanish-speaking service people and ignorant Americans drinking too much and talking too loud. A haha. Ha. I joke. It's only 5 minutes from the border and the guards actually know that people from Windsor go into Detroit just to go to Mexican Town for dinner and they're OK with it. I did, however, have to "declare" the leftovers I brought home with me. Really.

I would stick with Xochimilco but that is my preference. The food was good but I don't think it was better than some of the other local places I have tried. They have plenty of seating so you won't need to wait.

My wife and I visited Mexican Town yesterday for the first time in a few months. In general, we love the restaurant and visit every couple of montsh because we just get a craving. Unfortunately, last night we weer setting ourselves up for failure. Uncharacteristically, when we arrived, we waited for about 5 minutes to be seated in a mostly empty restaurant while wait staff were openly standing around and talking (mind you, there was no one in front of us). Once seated, it was another 5 minutes before we were acknowledged, given some water and the chips and salsa (which were fantastic as usual) and then the waitress expected us to have our order ready. The Queso that we ordered arrived warm, and not as it usually does piping hot with the end result being a very mediocre dish. Not enjoyable at all. My combo A came next however the cheese enchilada was cold in the middle, as if it had been just pulled out of the fridge and microwaved. Throughout the dinner, our server did not return to the table as we had to flag her down and request more water and chips/salsa. A generally bad night for a normally good place to visit. It'll likely be a long time before I go back, which is somewhat disappointing.

If I had to choose a restaurant in that one block radius with Los Galanos, Xochimilcos, El Zakolo's and Mexicantown Restaurant, I would probably pick Mexicantown restaurant. For the simple fact that they have the huge fajitas!! I'm serious. It's humongous! The mini size can feed 3 people. Maybe 4. I have seen some people order the large size and regret it when they see how huge it is when it comes to them. The large order can easily feed 6 people and that's around $17 I think. The small order is around $12. I love the steak fajitas. It comes with mostly meat and skimps out on the veggies. few onions and green peppers but hardly noticable. It comes covered in cheese but I always asks for the cheese on the side because it's cheese overload. The steak is always tender and delicious and perfect for re-heating as a carry out. (As most mexican food fans know lot of mexican food is terrible as a left over but this is a good one for that.) Their chips are good and so is their salsa. I also like their chilaquiles. (Scrambled eggs with tortilla chips) It's not runny and gross like some places make them. The botanas are also delicious. Not the best in the area but good enough. Now each of these popular mexican restaurants have their own specialties. Los Galanos has awesome homemade tortillas, El Zocalos has great Botanas, and Xochi has the most hype and this place Mexicantown restaurant has the biggest fajitas as their specialty!

This was my favorite place for lunch and we ate there frequently when I used to work down there! Our office was just a few blocks away and we would show up with 4-6 people and no matter how crowded it was we always got seated quickly. The food is AWESOME! I've been there more times that I can count and I don't ever remember having bad food... I so loved the salsa but later found out that it comes from a can :( Oh well, it is still a favorite restaurant and I will be sure to go when I'm home for a visit! If you haven't been there, try it! Seriously!

Many fond memories started here... Everytime I visit family back home, I somehow find my way back to Mexican Town for some fresh chips, salsa and some tasty mexican food. I remember back to my 21 birthday and somehow ended up here with some friends for the first time. It was a spicy and greasy mix made in heaven. The food here is unique from all other mexican fare I had and in a good way. It was fun to share this place with friends and family over the years. This area is a hidden jewel in the Mexican Town of Detroit by the Bridge to Canada. If you are ever in town give it a try. You too can be like Renee Zellweger or at least meet her photo in the lobby. I think she might have been a patron there once with Jack White of the White Stripes fame.

What's not to like about a place that can give you the taste of Mexico so far away from the source? Since living in California, I've been spoiled because Mexican food is available everywhere, but for those of you that are close to the Ambassador bridge, you are in luck! The food is really good, the portions are really large and the prices can't be beat. We ordered a large super nachos, $11.75. But you're thinking, that price is pretty typical...you're right, but you're wrong. The price might be typical, but the dish is not. There is so much meat. There's almost too much meat, but I'd be an idiot to say something like that. I have previously been here years ago where we also had the flaming cheese. It's a definite must if you come here. The beers were $3 (Sol) and the service was great. Canadian money at par on Mondays (cash only I think).

Terrible experience. First time visiting and brought 10 family members solely based on a friend's suggestion. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait. We waited patiently understanding that it's difficult to seat a larger group. We kept checking with the hostess with an attitude and suggested that we break up the party but was given the same response "we're just setting your table now". One hour 15 minutes later I approached them and was told " they couldn't guarantee a time frame". I was so upset, however, I never made a seen even while the hostess chuckled and rolled her eyes. We left and went down the street, got seated almost immediately and food was great. Please don't waste your time and money - they could care less about you, you are simply a number.

Flat-out the best chicken fajitas I have ever had. At first, they don't *look* all that impressive, but once you take your first bite--just, wow. I also recommend topping this off with the caramel-topped fried ice cream. Wowwie. Oh yeah, and don't get the regular-sized portion of fajitas. Instead, get the "mini" fajitas--and share it between two. The regular-sized serving feeds the whole family. They're very generous with portion sizes here. Service here has always been good. It's especially quick during lunch. Park on the street or in the lot out back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize.
