This place is so classy!!! My husband and I were attending a wedding in a venue in the same building as the London Chophouse so we did not eat but we did go to the bar. First of all the word that comes to mind when trying to describe this place...cool. It seems that it is in the basement of the building. The lighting is dark and sets almost a speakeasy type mood. The bar is huge and runs the entire length of the restaurant. We hung out here before the wedding and also came back during the wedding to grab a quiet drink together. Prior to the wedding, the bar was completely SLAMMED. Several of the guests who were waiting for the reception headed down to the bar to get a drink while waiting. Despite the numbers, the bartenders were friendly and super fast. I ordered a Kettle and Tonic which I regretted as soon as I saw the drink menu as they had many yummy looking options. When we came down during the wedding, the bar had cleared out. I ordered the Southern Belle which was kind of like an alcoholic Arnold Palmer. It was delicious. The bartender talked to us a little bit and told us to check out the Cigar Lounge upstairs. We headed up to the 2nd floor Cigar lounge which had a bar, seating and a pool table. The bartender here was also very friendly and super heavy handed with her pour (my favorite kind of bartender). We hung out here for a little bit before heading back to the wedding. Great first experience, can't wait to visit again and try the food!

As the old saying goes, you only have one chance to make a good first impression. I would like to give this place 2.5 stars but I am unable to so I figured I would round up. Anyways, this was our first time here, heard good things about it from friends and reviews from fellow Yelpers. Since it was Valentines Day they had a preset 4 course menu. For the appetizer I had the apple risotto cakes, then the caeser salad, main dish was the 14 oz. WAGYU NY strip steak, and for dessert the double chocolate cake. Everything was delicious!! The steak was cooked exactly to my liking, the risotto cakes amazing and the double chocolate cake was rich and delicious. So you are probably wondering why I only gave this 3 stars. It obviously wasn't the food, but the other most important thing for a dining experience, the service. Our server Sheila, did not greet us until about 10 minutes after we were seated. As anyone knows this is way too long of a time for a patron to be waiting for their server to greet them and take a drink order. While we were waiting for our apps, our server came by and asked if we would like some more bread, we said yes but for some reason she didn't get us the refilled bread basket until we got done with our salads, which was 30 mins after the initial question. Will I return to give them another chance to make a first impression...maybe.

Top notch experience all the way. Very much a classy and old-timey place. You really do feel as if you've stepped into another era. The music from the band was a nice touch and not too loud (something I hate... man, I must be getting old). They make a great dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives (my favorite). Scallops for our appetizer - delicious and prepared just right in my opinion. I chose the crab bisque, which I really enjoyed. I'd never had anything like it before to compare, but what I had I loved. For my entree, I chose the filet. It was prepared perfectly and deliciously. Making London Chop House my close-second favorite steakhouse in Detroit at the time. I paired this with the garlic mashed which I also enjoyed. For dessert, I chose the chocolate flourless cake to share with my date. It was excellent just as was everything else we had enjoyed. I see others mentioned the price point in reviews, but honestly I was not shocked by the cost on the menu. I was expecting much "worse". It's a nice place and will have higher prices... but for what you get I feel they are on par and certainly on par with others in the area. I don't want to rush back only because I feel this place deserves to be more of a special occasion or once-in-a-while type of place for me... but I really haven't stopped thinking about when my next meal here will be.

Went here for my birthday and was extremely surprised by my boyfriend. He took me here knowing I'm very much into history and this place was perfect. The atmosphere was very nice, except for the drunk hooker look alike who kept talking about sex and tattoos at the table next to us. I loved the original decor and found the live music to be a nice touch. The food was delicious! It was our first time having caviar and we loved it. Pricey yes, but in our eyes it was definitely worth it. I had the lobster and was pleased with how tender the meat was. I can't remember the name of the dish my boyfriend got but I do know that he enjoyed it very much. Wish I could remember our waiters name he was fantastic. Very attentive and also very helpful with any questions we had considering it was our first time dining there. I'm dying to go back and try something new!

I don't what people on here are referring to but service was great. The entrees perfect, tender, flavorful. The atmosphere and ambiance is romantic. The band and music selection was very well suited. I give it a 5 star. So glad that Roast was booked. I will be returning to this gem!!!

NEVER EAT HERE. I dined here about a week ago and upon reviewing my charges on my credit card I noticed the waiter charged my card an extra $25 dollars to tip himself. Not to mention I already left a 20% tip in cash. When I called up there they said they would refund my money and I'm still waiting on it but the manager failed to provide anything for the inconvenience. I wouldve never guessed this would be the service for a 4 dollar sign restaurant. The food was okay but not worth the extra $25 I was charged. I will NOT be returning to this establishment. The professionalism of the staff deserves 1 star.

This my first yelp review, and im glad its for the London Chop House! I come from a family of butchers, so I've been blessed with eating great meat my whole life. I must admit, from alot of other steakhouses that I've been too, London Chop House has become my favorite. 1st: my 10oz filet was excellent, tender, and the sauce was a perfect pair with the filet. All our sides were tasty, fresh and great compliments to the filet. I ordered asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes, and their take on mac n cheese. Also, their Caesar salad was good and fresh, crab bisque soup was amazing. Dessert was excellent as well. 2nd: Nice and inviting atmosphere, excellent service from the waiter and the rest of the staff. Our waiter Pauly was very knowledgeable and good at his job. Definitely will be coming back!

My friends and I came here a group dinner. It was quite an elegant place with very old style décor. I felt as though time had warped me to the 1930s. The preservation provided a classic feel. The food was also something worthy of mentioning. I ordered the Faroe Island Salmon, which came out perfectly and not over-cooked and the sides it came with really complemented the entire taste of the entree. This place would be a great place to take a date or celebrate an anniversary - something romantic. The servers are very attentive, I mean, you'd think so in a fancy place like this where Veal Chops are $50. Till next time chops!!

  • Lisa T.

I waited a few days before writing the review to make sure I was fair. Let me sum this up, When a menu charges $50 for a Veal Chop Oscar style, and the highest priced steak is a HUGE $88 dollar steak, you know what, I should expect perfection. If you charge for it, deliver it. Service from our waiter was very good, but I have to say, my water went empty a number of times. Given the number of runners or bus boys that seemed to be around, (staff seemed to outnumber the restaurant guests this particular night), it didn't make sense to me that I went empty. Starter course: Steak Tartare. Very good, but I asked for extra Frisee. No way in heck, I received extra. Also, a slight too much pepper. Hubby thought it was best part of meal and was happy with the amount of pepper- so, call it a positive. Salad: Hearts of Palm Salad. Excellent, but, no other way to describe it, over dressed. Excellent dressing, but, over-dressed. Entrees: Veal Chop Oscar- Cooked to perfection, but sauce was salty- sorry, it was. Steak was great though. Hubby had Bone In RIb Eye. Excellent- but, was it the best steak he every had, no. Dessert: Creme Brulee. Very good Am I being overly picky, dang right! But. for how much I paid, I DESERVE perfection, right?! Great special occasion place, but unlikely I will be back just for a really good steak. Check out some of my other reviews, I have been to other great steak places which I would just frequent more often. Definitely not bashing, but the expectation/ price / results comparison matters.

This will be a surprising review for those who aren't aware. So I have been on a Happy Hour kick lately because I am trying to still enjoy all of the Detroit fine dining, while saving some money as well. I went to LCH for Happy Hour on Friday with some of my co-workers and we absolutely loved it. It's perfect for an after-work drink and appetizer because of the atmosphere. It is very dark and the service was excellent. Our bartender was very knowledgeable. We ordered the pretzels - which are small almost fried pretzels that are crunchy with a side of gourmet mustard. We also ordered two sides of the "poutine" type snacks. They consisted of potato wedges with a creamy gravy topped with blue cheese crumbles. We also had an order of this crostini with balsamic over spinach leaves, tomatoes and a shell of a gourmet cheese. Everything was delicious. As for drinks, I had an absolute dirty martini on happy hour pricing for $6 and it was the perfect mix of olive juice and vodka. They also had $2 beers, and $1 per ounce for wine. I would love to go back again. *Do be aware that the menu online is outdated for happy hour. They no longer offer calamari for happy hour which is a bummer, other than that - it's great. And FYI - the happy hour is from 3:30 - 6 I believe.

Nothing better then a old school Steak House, or as I love to call them a supper club. I had no idea it only re opened 3 years ago after being closed for a significant amount of time. The restaurant is down stairs, and the moment you arrive you are greeted with a warm welcome and coat check! I love coat checks... Why did they disappear? The bar is a warm, dark, beautiful wood. The bartenders are right there to mix you a cocktail or recommend a nice wine. The wine list was excellent, lots of choices and price points. There is a live band playing perfect dinner music which absolutely sets the romantic tone. Gordon our server was excellent! We ordered the ribeye which was seasoned and cooked to perfection! The shrimp cocktail was excellent and fresh, loved the wedge salad and potatoes! We had a bold wine that paired very well with our steak. I love when the wait staff cleans the crumbs up, brings fresh silverware, and has the right amount of attentiveness. Instead of dessert, we opted for an after dinner drink and a cigar. They walked us upstairs and there are billiards, a bar, and an excellent selection of cigars, with plenty of comfortable seating. Honestly, what a way to end a perfect evening! Bookmark and go if you are in Detroit! I'm a huge fan!

My fiance loves this place and is always his "go to" place for special occasions. They got me hooked on some excellent wine and their steaks are the best steaks I've ever had. The whipped potatoes are uh-mazing! Swanky atmosphere although we did some people in shorts and jeans which I just found to be really inappropriate, class it up people! It has the feel of a 1920's night club - so cool, even have jazz singers on the weekends!

We have been visiting LCH roughly once a month for awhile now.. when you walk down the stairs all i can think about is the movie "goodfellas". I get the samething everytime, ny strip(wagyu), medium. I have never been disappointed. I don't care about the sides so i wont comment. Dessert, i would suggest the carrot cake, a big glass of milk. I don't have any special stories or inside information on the cook or the owner or any of that BS. My wife, i dine at a lot of so called nice places, LCH has the best dinner period. If your worried about prices i would suggest not eating here. Also this is not a turn, burn(capital grille) type of place, you will need at least two hours for dinner. Valet is quick.

Great date night! The food was great! My husband is a huge foodie and when it comes to expensive steak he's had it almost everywhere and he puts this place at the top of his list! The service is unlike any other and the ambiance is wonderful! Highly recommend trying!

I can't say that I love London Chop House. The food was just ok not at all worth what we paid. First the ambiance was nice but it just seem as though it was a after work cocktail and dinner spot since we did go on a Wednesday evening, it was not very many people there and dress code for that type of restaurant was definitely very casual. Which suprised me.Service is a bit on the cocky confident side, not to friendly just serious straight to the point, which felt a bit uncomfortable. Now the food we ordered was sauted Perch with crab and shrimp in a butter wine & caper sauce was very rich in flavor and small in portion thought I would have gotten bigger pieces of perch I also had a side of roasted Cauliflower and gryuer cheese now that was really good, ad there mac and cheese had to send back because it was watered down no flavor cheese noodles and replaced with garlic mash which were tasty but there sides are like $8- $10 and not for sharing portion is small unlike some other high end great quality steak houses (RC) my husband got the rib eye which had to be sent back twice because it was way undercooked by the third time it was burnt on the outside and way well done in the middle $60 for that steak alone never again they should have just made a whole new steak.the flavor was however decent to some maybe to salty. Carrot cake was delicious. But will not be returning here again.

This is a wonderful steakhouse with fantastic old school ambiance, character and charm. You feel like you've been transported to another time and are part of a social elite with your own special table. Wonderful food, great service and nice live jazz band. The wine selection is light, however, the food is reasonably priced for a high end steakhouse and the filet and sides and salad were exceptional. There is a reason this place was the old stomping grounds and regular place for the original money and motor tycoons in Motor City

I had been meaning to go here since it reopened (in 2011? 2012?) but finally got here last month. So worth the wait. Incredibly sexy atmosphere with live music and amazing food. The crab legs were perfectly prepared. The mashed potatoes and mushrooms and asparagus were delightful. Worth every penny.

A beautiful, if somewhat dark, old school steakhouse. The waitstaff is excellent. Wine list is adequate, but perhaps not quite up to the place's legendary standard. Only dined here once, but I thought the food was a bit over priced, but generally quite good. The french onion soup and lobster mac & cheese were both an unfortunate miss, the latter of the two went almost untouched. The entertainment (Thornetta Davis!) was outstanding, but the set was short. The place was oddly empty for a Friday evening...half full when we arrived at 9:00 and almost empty when we left at 10:30 or so. Curious that when I called and asked for 9:00 reservations they tried their best to push me up to 8:30...guess they knew they had a slow night ahead and were attempting to close down early? Will likely return, probably on a Saturday, which the waiter claimed was their big night. Addendum: After a second visit (yes, on a Saturday), a few additional observations. First, I was incorrect regarding the 'completeness' of their cellar. Apparently there's a second, much more upscale list available upon request (think: first growths, some with real age). Room was much fuller & livelier than our previous visit. Service & meat still excellent, side dishes & soups still not on par with the rest of the menu. Tomato basil soup delivered what its name promised and not a bit more, mashed potatoes were soupy, over loaded with garlic, and borderline inedible. The comparatively poor accompaniments on both visits will likely keep us from returning any time soon. Nice place with lots of history, but not the best steakhouse in the city or even within a couple blocks walk. Roast is better, sorry guys.

London Chop house is a wonderful choice for a special occasion dinner. The service was very good and I enjoyed the special touches to mark the occasion. I ordered the aged petit filet which was marvelous. Every course of the meal was very good. I was particularly pleased with the nice wines which were available by the glass. I was able to order a nice sparkling wine before dinner then switch to red with the main course and still have a high quality wine worthy of the excellent meal.

Open again, this newly renovated old style restaurant looks and feels like it has been here since the 1920's. The deep dark wooden walls and the old Chicago style atmosphere only adds to the flavor of the ribeye sitting in your plate. Although, not the best deal I've eaten, it is the best I've found in Detroit. The bar is stocked with top shelf liquors for both pre and post dinner imbibement. Go for the experience. You won't be let down.

This was one of the best meals I have had in or around Detroit in a very long time, if not the absolute best. The short ribs are what sold me on the menu, and I ended up sampling the filet, French onion soup, beef soup, creamed spinach and the cauliflower. Everything was AMAZING. The ambience matched the food. The place croons early/mid-century cool and class, and as you sit there you can't help but daydream about everything the dark wood-clad walls have seen over the years. The bar mixes a great drink, and the service was as good or better than anywhere else I have been. Expect a tab comparable to other high end steak/chop houses in the area - but an experience that blows most of the others away.

Looking to feel transported back in time and enjoy a luxurious meal with a little nostalgia? Then give London Chop House a try. We went for a special occasion - which, unless you have a nice expense account, is probably the only way to justify the pretty hefty price tag. We got a lovely little table in a corner and had a great meal. Our service was good, the food was prepared well and the cocktails were lovely. The atmosphere is very classic steakhouse, the kind where you can just picture wealthy patrons of a bygone era sitting around smoking cigars and drinking brandy while listening to a crooner and piano play. It's kind of a neat experience. The downside? The prices. Yowza. Now, the prices are pretty much in line with what I'd expect at an upscale chop house, so it's not necessarily that they're overpriced, but you definitely have to be prepared to shell out the dough if you eat here. Our steaks were really good and cooked right and the sides (and dessert by the way) were really good, but for the money there might be places with better overall food. But the history and ambiance make it worth a try.

My wife and I have been waiting to visit the chop house for dinner ever since it reopened. But there are so many other options out there, it took us a long while to do it. When we finally did we had a good time. Though I made them, we didn't need reservations for 7pm on Sat. Strange how slow it was. It picked up by nine, as we finished a superb dinner. Lamb chops for the wife and a perfectly med-rare Prime 10 oz filet for me. Couldn't complain with the roasted cauliflower (which was perfectly cooked) or my garlic mash. Don't order the chocolate two way desert or you will be disappointed. The staff were polite and attentive and the ambiance just what we wanted; subdued, classy, with an old school charm best reflected in the music that caresses your mood rather that trying to create it.

This is one of the top two restaurants in Detroit. Great atmosphere, service, music & food. Osters were fresh, Ahi Tuna was excellent, perfectly seared and was a good portion size, lamb chops were also great.

My boyfriend brought me here for some cocktails the other night. This place is a gem! You walk downstairs from the street and into what feels like a place that has been trapped in time - but in a good way. You can imagine London Chop House being alive with automotive movers and shakers in the 50's/60's. That being said, I've only ever been here for drinks..(hands down they have the best margaritas in the city - at least by my standards!) Really looking forward to try the food next time..but it's the type of place you feel you need a special occasion to come to. Not just for a random friday/saturday.

Just had a lovely dinner at the new/old london chop house. My inlaws were regulars back in the day, and they were very excited to revisit their old haunt. My wife and I looked over the reviews on Yelp, and were worried about some of the new restaurant's shortcomings. It isn't unusual for a new restaurant to have service problems, and we had experienced that recently at the reincarnated Joe Muer's as well. As soon as we arrived, our fears disappeared. The hostess, Annie, was extremely knowledgable and friendly, and made my inlaws feel as if they had stepped back into their youth. She seated us at their old favorite table, and introduced us to our server, Nicole. Nicole described the dishes perfectly, and made recommendations for my wife and father in law. We were especially pleased that her recommendations were unrelated to the price of the dish, e.g., perch rather than dover sole. My wife loved the Steak tartare, my inlaws raved about the escargot, and i wished that the appetizer portion of scallops was my choice for an entree. Instead, i ordered a steak for my entree and that was the only hiccup of the night. my order was obviously switched with someone who prefers a well-done steak (those people need therapy!). Nicole promptly arranged for a new piece of meat and the manager removed the entree from our bill. My wife's lamb chops were outstanding, and i might order that next time. All in all, a great evening at a wonderfully renewed detroit landmark.

Coming from a restaurateur from NYC I have to rate this upper echelons eatery as my favorite in the Detroit metropolitan area. The thing I love about this restaurant is you don't have to be a "foodie" to love this place the vast knowledge of the wait staff can help you through your quandaries. I highly recommend the steak tartar for an app the egg yoke and sweet beef with lightly wilted arugula is pure insanity! I ate here 2x in 2days and unfortunately leaving to go back to NYC but cant wait to return. The executive chef worked with the one and only BAM! Yes Emeril himself. The staff from walking in the door till I retrieved my coat has been top notch and don"t forget the cigar bar above this gem of an establishment! Don"t question me GOGOGO! Veal chop YES filet mignon YES! Ask your server for the wines not on the list may make you feel a bit risque but worth the ask!

For just opening everything was wonderful. From the decor, the music, the waitstaff (ask for Ryan), and the food, we truly enjoyed everything. Try the scallops to start, the arugula and beet salad with pears (yum!), and the lamb chops. Escargot was prepared the best I have ever had. It was such a treat to enjoy an evening at such a wonderful new take on a Detroit legend.

The main entrees were superb. We had the calamari for an appetizer which was done absolutely perfectly. The salad should not even have been brought to the table. It was just bland. One could not taste the dressing or the greens. The service was not good. The hostess was absent for a relatively long time when we walked in and a crowd was gathering and it was not a good first impression. They were good about keeping the drinks coming, and the appetizer arrived just in time, however, the entrees took way too long. It's a shame because it is such a nice place with a great ambiance. The live music was a nice touch. It's definitely worth a visit, but I hope they tighten things up.

Ron Swanson would undoubtedly approve of London Chop House. This is a bring your own steak bib and eat a nice big bloody slab of beef type place. It is 100% chop house. This is not a foodie haven. They know what they're good at and they stick to it. They do food the old school way. Aged steaks from Porterhouse to Ribeye to NY Strip to Filet all aged to give them a very unique and delicious flavor. I had the Filet Mignon and my hubs had the NY Strip Steak. Both were equally as mouthwatering-ly good. Cooked to ultimate perfection. The Filet was juicy and cut so soft, like butter. The texture was just heavenly and the aged flavor gave it an almost earthy taste, in the best way possible. On the steaks alone I will be back and I will be singing the praises of the London Chop House to friends & visitors. The newly restored Chop house was restored to it's original glory and the atmosphere has this undeniable feeling of Detroit nostalgia. It's a restaurant that boasted the Best of Detroit back in it's hay day. It exudes an old timey class that isn't really present in the world today. The time where gentlemen held the doors for women, where chivalry was not yet dead. Suit jackets were required back in the day. It demands a sort of respect, sophistication is evident but not in any sort of snooty way...more in a "we know we have something special here" way. The dark wood booth and bar, the nice dimmed lighting, the Jazz band covering classics such as Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, the romantic yet almost men's club feeling of the place all take you back to a time where things were hopping in Detroit. It feels like a living time capsule of Detroit. Just remarkable. The service was top notch. Our waiter was on point, very helpful with the menu and gave great recommendations. My only complaint would just be the side dishes that come a la carte. The garlic mashed potatoes were fine, but surprisingly bland and I ended up dumping my delicious Bourdelaise (steak sauce of mushrooms and red wine) on top to give it more of a punch of flavor. The steak didn't need the sauce. It was so full of flavor on it's own. The cauliflower was pretty good, just nothing unbelievable. Two highly recommended apps would be: the Clam Chowder & the Shrimp Cocktail. Each shrimp was giant and the taste was so amazingly fresh. The cocktail sauce was perfection & I really loved the horseradish shavings, it made for such a fresh spicy tang to each bite. The chowder was a practice in restraint. It was the lightest most flavorful chowder I think I've ever had. I normally think of a gloppy consistency but this chowder was pleasantly creamy without the heft and the slight bacon flavor along side the clam and potato was really a perfect mix of salty and savory and sea. No complaints about dessert, we had a ricotta cheesecake with a vanilla bean puree. The cheesecake was unexpectedly light but flavorful all at the same time. We fought over the last bites, it was so delicious! The London Chop house is perfect for a romantic night out with your special someone or even a great place to celebrate a special occasion. If it were around when I got married, it would have been a contender for the reception. London Chop House: keeping the tradition of great food and an impressive throw back type atmosphere...a true Detroit establishment resurrected!

Like a trip back in time to a hard-drinking, steak-eating, scotch swilling, Mad Men resaurant. If you want a steak or veal chop with a strong drink, this is a great place. Desserts were so-so, short ribs were fine, but the ribeye was fantastic.

A group of us decided last minute to try and eat here last night. I know this kind of place usually requires a reservation but it was late (around 9 PM) and we figured we would give it a try. We received a very cold reception from the women at the reception desk and were told that they are fully booked. No problem and we understood and told her we would go grab a drink at the bar. If something changes let us know since we noticed that there were several open tables. About 2 minutes later she came and told us there was an open table. Great! we will take it. We had two friends meeting us there and decided to order a drink and wait for them at the table. Then my phone rings and its one of my friends saying that the restaurant will not allow him to come in because he isn't wearing a collared shirt. He was wearing a black swearter, nice jeans and black boots. I went out to inquire and the women at the front reception were rude again and said there is no way he can be admitted. when i inquired about all the other detroit hipsters in the place wearing sweaters and her answer was the same i realized it may have been that fact that my friend is heavily tattooed and the woman is obviously discriminating against his look. I couldn't believe this was happening and after complaining about the entire event and getting the fake smile from the two women at reception we decided to just leave. The pretentious air of the place is horrible and doesn't have a place in a city like Detroit. As a frequent visitor to the great city for business and recreation I am completely horrified at the discrimination we felt at this place. Shame on the women working the reception and shame on the establishment as a whole for this experience. We left and went to Roast and had a great time and experience without the discrimination and BS of the Chop House.

We have very fond memories of being at the London Chop House in the 70's. My wife and I were in our 20's and if we really wanted a special night out, and feel very sophisticated, we saved up to hit the Chop House, and afterward go dancing at L'Esprit around the corner. From the moment you stepped in the Chop House of old, and your personalized/engraved matchbooks awaited on your table in a red leather banquet, it was the beginning of a unique and wonderful evening. So much for history. First let me say I applaud and greatly admire the owner for taking a very costly risk in a volatile downtown Detroit and in an industry where failures far outnumber the successes. It takes guts to do this and for that we should all be grateful. I also understand that a restaurant must cater to a modern market and consumer. So, with that said, and even assuming you are young enough that "The Chop" of lore means nothing to you, and assuming you had no pre-conceived notions or expectations going in...The London Chop House has a long way to go, needs to significantly walk the talk, earn its prices, and vastly improve its lackluster and at times befuddled service. The dining summary: Our drinks (four of us) arrived without a problem...and then...we...waited...for close to an hour...and nothing. Our waiter explained that the restaurant had a new state-of-the-art POS computer system feeding the orders into the kitchen and...our order "disappeared." One hour and ten minutes after being seated our starters arrived. My arugula and beet salad was fine, as was my friend's salmon appetizer. My wife and our other friend split the wedge salad which turned out to be more of a half-wheel of bleached-out iceberg with a maybe a teaspoon of dressing. My wife said hers was OK, but our friend lost her appetitie for it when she looked at the sad salad and had the plate taken away. And then the starter plates sat...and drink glasses sat...and we sat...and waited. When another half an hour went by, our entrees arrived, and as the waiter "auctioned" the food: "Who had the filet? Who had the...?" I had a small filet with a side of Hollandaise as did a friend, my wife had a NY strip, and our fourth had the short ribs. We had sides of grilled asparagus and a baked cauliflower with cheese dish, and the ladies split a baked potato. All the steaks were over-cooked and dry, although the short ribs were "delicious." The asparagus and baked potatoes were OK, as was the cauliflower. We ordered two cups of coffee which not only were luke warm, but had a distinctively marginal flavor as well, and we ordered two desserts - the cheesecake and a chocolate tort something I don't quite remember. If they were made on premise I would be surprised, because there was nothing memorable about them...or the food in general. The London Chop House shouldn't just be "OK." It should be "Great." I will give the manager credit for coming to the table afterward and apologizing for the service. That was nice of him, and he comped (we would have never asked) us our four drinks and starters. What was originally a $250 meal became a $180 meal which was a generous gesture. However, we will give them a fair amount of time to right this ship before we try it again. The looks is just right, the ambience is terrific, and the live music is great. Please...bring the service and food to the caliber it deserves.

Finally! Detroit has a restaurant worth raving about. Best service, ask for Joseph, perfect presentation. Food, especially the caviar service, was right on point. Lovely pace to the meal. I will return again and again. A perfect special occasion place!

Let me be clear: My friends and I had a fantastic experience can't wait to come back. From the moment I stepped out of my car and a gentleman got both the outside and inside doors, I knew I was in for a service treat. The ambiance of this place is devine and you can see why it needed to come back to Detroit. From dark corners for making deals to groups of friends and pairs of lovers sitting at the bar, it was awesome. A couple people in our group of seven commented that the live music was the PERFECT - adding to the vibe instead of taking away. Valet was a little pricey at $10 but considering you're going to drop $50-100 per person on dinner, it doesn't seem like much. Let's do a play-by-play of the food: 1) My friends loved the sides: mushrooms, asparagus, potatoes, mashed potatoes. 2) The chowder and bisque were incredible, the latter being the best I've ever had and I'm a critic of bisques. (The bean soup left a great deal to be desired by one in our party, who found it to be more beans than soup.) 3) The salads were good - but it's a salad. The Caesar didn't stand out to me. (Also, ask for it chopped if you don't want to cut the large pieces of romaine.) 4.) My friends raved about their tuna tartar and lamb chops. 5.) One person ordered the fillet and, her words, "I love that the steak tastes amazing without the sauce. It's perfectly prepared and perfectly seasoned." 6.) I went lighter and had the appetizer crab cake and (two) scallops - and another in our party had the crab cake as well. The scallops were the best prepared as I've had in a couple years while dining out. Absolutely, positively, amazingly perfect. The crab cake: Eh. The problem is the very hard, fried outer breading. For almost $20 for a single cake, I expected something light with little or no breading. It actually tasted a little better this morning when I had the rest of it for breakfast because the crust softened. (Hey! I'm heading to the airport and didn't want it to go to waste. :) The biggest opportunities for the restaurant are related to timing. It took nearly 30 minutes after our wine arrived to get water, even though several at our table specifically asked for it. (One plus, the gentlemen - boy? - serving water actually remembered that I prefer no ice.) Then, my soup came out with everyone's salad instead of my salad with theirs. The two of us who ordered off the appetizer dinner menu were served about 20-30 minutes before those with entrees. After waiting 10 minutes we realized ours had come out MUCH sooner so we started eating. It was a bit of a bummer. I think there are some tweaks that need to happen, which is natural. We came the second or third night that they'd been open to the public. If the food's price point is above your budget, just stop in for a cocktail at the bar - and if you're feeling frisky, dress up and wear your sunglasses or a hat tipped over your eye for that air of allure. You won't regret the experience.

I would probably give this place a 3.5 if it was an option and here's why: I took my mother here for her birthday last night specifically because they had veal Oscar on the menu which is her favorite. We started with drinks, I ordered a bloody Mary which I found too citrus-y (reminded me of how they had them in Brazil) and my mother ordered a dirty kettel one martini, which she enjoyed.(How can you mess that up?) My mother of course ordered the veal Oscar which she loved. She said it was prepared different than she was use to, but overall enjoyed it thoroughly. I had the lump crab and heart of palm salad. It was very good, except, it was drenched in dressing which I am not a fan of. The server did a nice job and the ambiance was pleasant with the piano player. I'm glad I was able to dine here, but probably wouldn't make it on my list to dine again anytime soon. To me it was more of a one and done. Although if you have out of towners, sitting at the bar may be the way to go. Order an appetizer and drinks and enjoy the piano and decor.

I must admit that they have one of the tastiest NY Strips around. It was seasoned well and cooked to perfect (medium rare) temperature. The calimari and beef tip appetizers were sublime. Our dining experience would have been perfect, had it not been for less than attentive server, bad bottle of wine, and stale cheesecake. Definitely overpriced.

Planned a client dinner at London Chop while in town for a conference. We were a party of 7. We arrived and were seated right away. The ambiance was nice, live piano playing, upscale feel but not stuffy. The restaurant was starting to get busy (we sat at 6PM) and was packed by the time we left. We ordered several apps (calamari, oysters etc), cocktails and wine before dinner. Service was great - Karen was our main server although several people attended to our table. She did a great job and had a great sense of humor. Dinner was really good - everyone has something different (steak, seafood, chicken) and everyone was very happy with their meal. Our overall experience was great. Was disappointed we couldn't make it into the cigar bar after dinner but we needed to get to an event. This is a great place for a small, intimate dinner or a large group. They clearly can handle both. Would def. return on my next trip to Detroit.

Ate lunch here with some co-workers. Incredible ambiance. It feels like you should be smoking and having 3 martinis while eating here. Definitely a throw back (in a good way) that won't be recreated again. Dark woods, brass and white tablecloths everywhere. Service was outstanding. Attentive and fun, but still professional. The menu was quite reasonably priced for lunch and the food was great. We all ordered burgers (not the first thing that comes to mind at The Chop House) and they were really good, definitely one of the best in town.

OK, we will be the first to admit that we are only about three + years too late coming to the party!!! BUT recently we had the opportunity to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary at this destination Downtown venue and it was PERFECT!!! From initially being greeted warmly at the door by the beautiful Allysa to the outstanding attention of personable, experienced and charming waitstaff person, Jerry Lewis - the service was impeccable and the experience unforgettable. First of all, the food was amazing - PLEASE don't miss out on ordering the incredible crabmeat/hearts of palm/avocado salad. The Faroe Island salmon and calamari were also over-the-top unique. Don't be intimidated by the iconic name and flawless reputation of this Downtown Detroit restaurant. Absolutely, we'd recommend The London Chop House - again and again - for a light appetizer, lunch, dinner, a glass of wine/beer or craft cocktail. This establishment knows what it's doing - and isn't about to compromise environment, quality of food OR service! We will definitely be returning - BEFORE OUR 46th!

I had another lovely experience here last week. I enjoyed a dry martini and also one of their old-fashions, I believe using Blanton's as the base bourbon. Once again the atmosphere and drinks were absolutely stellar, as was the hospitality. The staff offers to take your coat when you enter, which is much appreciated at this time of year. There was plenty of space at the bar. It looked like a band was setting up (probably jazz, based upon the instrument selection) as we were leaving, but I wasn't able to stick around for it.

This is my favorite restaurant, anywhere - with a slight caveat. First things first, this is an upscale steak house and it is priced as such. If you want outback steakhouse prices with outback quality, goodbye. If you crave a mouthwatering cut, if you require an impeccable serving of red meat, and if you are a very selective steak eater...welcome, my friend. Price...not relevant, the steak is. To set the scene, think Sinatra, think Dean Martin. This is probably the place Roger Sterling would take a client if SCDP were located in the motor city (thank you to whoever got that reference ). This is your grandpa's and your old man's kind of place. It has the feel of an exclusive and private club from the 60s and early 70s. The front is unassuming with an awning out over the sidewalk. Once through the door...an odd hallway? There is a narrow set of stairs leading down. At the end of the stairs is the hostess both. Then, enter the dining room. Larger than you expect, there is a bar at the back and a stage in the center front. It's dim, quite, and private. Every booth and table has a little lamp to keep with the intimate theme. Booths are deep and feel private. There usually is some live jazz music, sometimes accompanied by a singer...typically on weekend nights, at least. This rounds everything out. Now to the food. There are other options besides steak, such as seafood or poultry. But I came here for the red meat. The staff is well trained and professional, fitting of the atmosphere. They recite the day's specials for you. After being tempted by the menu and the specials, I opted for one of the specials. It turned out as anyone would hope (if you order steaks anything above medium, goodbye). The selection was appropriate and succulent. It felt so effortless to cut through and melted in your mouth. Now, I do have two items they could improve on. One, I need an old fashioned with my steak. I ordered one while dining and I was slightly let down. It was made with maker's mark, which is okay, but it would have been more appropriate to use Woodford reserve. I'm not sure if they carry that there. The drink was a little stronger in the liquor than it should have been, and could have used better balance of the bittersweet. Second, I wish there were other course options such as ratatouille, crimini mushrooms, bean fumé, or something along those line. I know, I'm splitting hairs, at this point. Overall, great experience. HIGHLY recommend it.

I had the pleasure of bringing in a group of mostly women and mostly in their 70s for lunch. They were excited to reminisce about the London Chop House and I was worried it could never live up to their memories. Well, it did! Our group was accommodated in every way possible. The interior has been restored to its original splendor. The food was to die for and the service was impeccable. The group could not say enough about our visit. We were all on separate checks, everyone had something they wanted special and each and every request was met with pleasure. We even sat next to local celebrity Kym Worthy who also accommodated out requests for pictures and chit chat! Im guessing the ultimate goal of YELP is to review the food (amazing btw), but Im happy to report on our EXPERIENCE - it was BEYOND FANTASTIC. Thank you London Chop House for making fantastic new memories of a place which was already in the heart of my group.

We dined here on November 1, 2014 which was a Saturday night. The atmosphere, music and overall I was very cool and retro circa 1950s and 60s however I came for the food and, quite frankly, was disappointed. First, everything simply took too long and for no reason.I didn't completed is it truly was enjoying the atmosphere and the music but I did notice. Second the appetizers were gross. We ordered oyster Rockefeller's, beef tips and calamari and the only item which was edible to me was the oyster Rockefeller's and probably because it was covered in cheese. Dinner was decent but simply not what I had expected from the London chophouse. I died with five other people and I had salmon while everybody else had steak of some kind. We all agreed that we've had better steaks at other places and I've had salmon much better prepared and cooked the way I requested. The one saving grace was that dessert was delicious. Would I return? Probably not as there are many other places I can go for a guaranteed good meal for those prices. My hope is that they improve as the food should match all of the other intangibles this restaurant possesses. As an aside and for what it's worth, try the carrot cake, it was delicious.

They completely forgot to bring us the appetizer we ordered, but I am still giving it five stars because everything else was just. that. good. Ambiance/Environment: A+. You walk inside and go down a set of stairs with a large seal/crest hanging overhead. The hostesses take your jacket and seat you in the romantic dining room. Dark, wood all around, candles, and crystal chandeliers. It felt like being in a speakeasy - not like they just tried to recreate one in modern day, but like it was actually an old school speakeasy. This place just oozes history. Food: A. Delicious. I had the short ribs, which were extremely tender and practically fell apart on the place. My husband had a filet and said it was totally on par with the best steakhouses in Chicago, and he's a critical guy so let's just say I take that kind of comment seriously. For sides, we had gruyere cauliflower (omg, so rich) and the green beans (amazing and covered in garlic chips). Drinks: We each drank Makers Mark Old Fashioneds, and everything was good with those. They also have a fairly extensive wine list. Overall, I am happy with the experience and a, looking forward to going back! Note: Wear a sport coat, guys. Everyone else in here was donning one.

I truly wanted to give this a 4 or above. I was in Detroit for 3 days only to see The Rolling Stones. I researched ahead of time for an upscale restaurant that had oysters on the menu. The LCH had excellent reviews. I arrived on a Thursday evening around 6:30 and the place was virtually empty, which I am quite OK with. They had a little Jazz combo playing that was very nice. My server was excellent, Sheila. Very nice and took the time to chat when I wanted to, and disappeared until needed. I ordered the West Coast oysters to start. Very nice. Along with the champagne mignonette was the obligatory cocktail sauce, but with fresh grated horseradish to top. Very nice. I followed this with their crab bisque. Yummy. Had a hot oil drizzle on top which for me, put it over the top. For my entree, I had decided on the Waygu NY steak ($58) before i got there. I ordered it Meduim Rare, and since it came with nothing, I ordered creamed spinach ($8) to accompany. The NY was good. It was however, a smidgen overcooked. It was leaning heavily towards medium. Still pink, but definitely not medium rare. For 58 bucks, I actually do expect it to be right. It was as I said, at the point of.....almost right. Had I not been 2/3 into my bottle of wine, I may have sent it back. Regardless, even at medium, I found nothing exceptional to warrant the Waygu trademark. It does say "Australian" Waygu, but after further research, that basically means nothing other than they can add 10 bucks to this cut. Don't get me wrong, it was still tasty, as I enjoy a good NY. The creamed spinach however, was a total disappointment. Besides being unable to detach the stems prior to cooking, it was smothered n the absolute most bland Buerre Blanc I have ever tasted. I am guessing Buerre Blanc vs. Bechamel as I would think I would have tasted the onion? I have had creamed spinach at House Of Prime Rib and Alfred's, both in San Francisco, and this, well, this, compared to what is right, verged on disgusting. As a Chef told me once, it missing only.....FLAVOR!!!!! LOL From there I had a Creme Brulee for dessert. Since I am not a dessert guy, my only comment is it was yummy. I truly enjoyed it, and I guess that;s all that matters! All in all. I suggest staying away from the Waygu, get their regular NY and avoid the creamed spinach. When in San Francisco, try Alfred's!!!

I'm a food snob and been to a ton of places in downtown Detroit. This place is hands down the best food I had!!!! To ambiance of the place I loved. The service was also exceptional! We made reservations for a Friday and they sat us 15min prior to the time we booked. Our waitress Karen was a doll very informative and attentive. He service was awesome. I loved how our food was delivered promptly but also spaced out in just enough time to make room for the next course lol. It also gave us time to converse and enjoy the live music they have. The food was cooked to perfection!! I order the steak tartare as an app. It was phenomenal!! Best I ever had!!! My entree was the salmon filet with the baby arugula and sautéed mushrooms on the side. Epic!! My date ordered the lamb chops with a baked potato on the side. Also, exceptional. The presentation of the food was just as great as the taste! It's a very classy place. Overall they definitely get a 5 from me. It's been a while since I had such a phenomenal all around dining experience especially downtown. I would highly recommend this place to anyone over any of the other over rated places downtown.

What a disappointment! I made reservations for 8pm on a Saturday night. When I got there I was promptly seated. When I made the reservation, I asked if it was possible to get a table where I could sit side by side with my date and not across from her, and was told, "yes." However, this was lost in the process. Still, they fixed it, not a problem. Sat for about 10 minutes before finally being greeted. The gentlemen asked what we wanted to drink. I ordered water and a bottle of Moscato. Since we were sitting so long, we were also ready to order. We got the Calamari, Filet 10 Oz Medium rare and Filet 10 Oz Medium. Sides were mushrooms and a baked potato. 15 more minutes go by...got water, but still no wine. Calamari arrive...still no wine. Finally, wine time. 35 minutes after ordering, the steaks finally arrive. A runner put them down on the table. I asked which was which? He said they were both medium. Uhhh..no. The server came by and I made him aware mine was overcooked. He said yes, that is supposed to be medium rare, yours is definitely medium. He offered to take it back, but I honestly did not want to wait another 35 minutes for my food, since my date already had hers. Sat for about 15 minutes waiting for the bill. He finally brought it and charged for a glass and bottle of wine. Oops. Bottom line: $50 steaks, $7 add-ons since there are no sides with the steaks and they cannot get it right? $200 later, I was hugely disappointed!

What you would expect from an old school Frank Sinatra type steakhouse. Classic basement steakhouse with cigar room. Steak was excellent, service perfect. Pricey but in line with other high end steakhouses.

Wonderful dining experience! Went here with a group of six and we shared one of the appetizers on special, crab and lobster stuffed ravioli - it was absolutely delicious. The bacon wrapped scallops were also really good. For my entree I had the sauteed perch - I was hesitant on that because I usually have fried perch which I love, but the waiter was very helpful when I was deciding between that and lamb chops. And he did not steer me wrong! It was SO delicious, very fresh, and came with lump grab and a really yummy sauce. Finally, for dessert, we had the carrot cake, which again I would not typically order but the waiter highly recommended it... it was the BEST carrot cake I've ever had. Great environment, good entertainment, awesome service. We will definitely be back!

Why did my review mysteriously disappear ? Ate there a few nights ago in that dark basement and needed a mechanical jaw to eat the short ribs-just fix the problems and take it as constructive criticism -we want the restaurant to get better not go away -watch whst is going on-see that you wait staff is terrible ,your food is not that great ,way too dark - wake up and control your attitude -make it pleasant for your customers-this is supposed to be a high end restaurant-make it that way-watch what is going on - try eating your food before passing it on to your customers.

Overall experience: This place is absolutely spectacular. From the moment that you walk in the door you feel that you are immediately transported into the 1930s. The esthetics of the restaurant are above any others that I have been to in every which way, from the décor to the dimly lit room I was in awe. There are beautiful crystal chandeliers hanging over the bar, which is surrounded by dark wood, perhaps mahogany. The Friday that I went for dinner there was a jazz band playing in which was what completed the trifecta of stimulating all of my senses. The band started between 7-8 and ended at 10, I wish I would have remembered the group's name. It was simply distracting. I couldn't pay attention to the conversation I was having at dinner as I kept getting drawn by the music. Dinner: I had the FILETS OF DOVER SOLE (from England) with Citrus Butter - Haricot Vert Amandine (green beans sautéed in butter). My date had the SAUTEED LAKE PERCH U-12 Shrimp - Lump Crab - Roasted Red Potato - White Wine Butter. Both were great dishes, however, the lake perch were simply amazing. When I asked my date to describe his dish in one word he said, "addictive". That was a great one worded description as I simply can't stop thinking about how great and well balanced the dish was. The white wine butter really made an impact in that dish. My dover sole was my first experience with sole, came recommended by the waiter at the Capitol Grille just a few days prior, so I thought I would try it. It was a light fish, reminded me of a cod or tilapia, but honestly nothing as amazing as I thought it would be. I highly recommend the lake perch, if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense...it came from our local fresh water lakes. Drinks: I had an old fashioned, recommended by the waiter and I'm very happy he did as this was my first and it won't be my last. It completed the entire night and feeling that I had. Overall top notch experience and I highly recommend it, especially for a special occasion.

One of the best steaks I've ever had. Ranks right there with Gibsons in Chicago and St Elmo's in indy. And the best meal I've had in detroit. Atmosphere is great and the side dishes were just as good. Also the wait staff was knowledgable and made pretty good wine rec's. Perfect place for a special occasion.

Went for lunch, pricey, but well worth it. I am typically not a fan of calamari, this place made me totally reconcile with this thought. It has the best calamari I have ever encountered in my entire life. Of course I got their take on caprese salad, well worth it. The chicken dish was awesome, again not a fan of creamed corn, but their take was phenomenal and thus made me reconcile my thoughts about what creamed corn could be. One of the absolute best restaurants in Detroit, if you are looking for a dinning experience ahead of the curve. Im talking about excellent food here, for get about wait times, wait staff or bartenders - if you're going for food, go here.

My husband and I had a superb dining experience here this past weekend. We were in town for a wedding earlier that day and I wanted dinner somewhere nice. My fellow Yelper's didn't let me down on this one. From the entrance to the exit, everything about this restaurant is top notch. For starters, I had the baby arugula and warm goat cheese salad. Man I could have ate the cheese solo. The crusted pistachio paired with the warm cheese was absolute divine. For our entrees, he had the perch with lump crab meat and shrimp, and I, the salmon. He said his was good but mine blew his out the water with flavor. My only gripe, albeit small one, is that I requested my salmon medium rare and it was prepared medium. Other than that, no complaints. On to dessert, hubby had the gold brick sundae and went in like it was his last dessert on earth. I had the brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Beware the scoop is the size of an orange! My brownie was cool and I requested they warm it up and they did so without reservation. The customer service here is out of this world. By the way, they have live jazz during most evenings which was an added plus. Please have dinner here; your taste buds will thank you.

I give them 3 stars begrudgingly. Food was 4- stars, but service was 2+. (Adjusted for a fine dining restaurant). Seems they still have bugs to work out. No sommelier present on a Saturday evening; waiter was polite, but inattentive; service untimely; water glass either filled every sip, or allowed to become empty for lengthy durations; 4 top table too small for 4 adults; steak slightly overcooked but still tasty. Steak tartare excellent but egg on top much overcooked. Cheesy cauliflower top choice. Creamed spinach sensational. Oysters had much shell in them, so whoever is doing the shucking needs more training. Tried to order coffee, but wait staff failed to come by timely. Expectations were very high; experience was just OK. Definite must try. Will come back to see if they get act together.

Went downtown to experience this historic establishment and wasn't disappointed. Wonderful waiter and staff. Food and wine were excellent. But what made the night was the atmosphere, not pretentious, but classy. A wonderful jazz band played during dinner, and unlike some other places I've been to with a band, they weren't too loud. Afterwards, went to their cigar lounge for a cigar and beverage. All in all, a great time was had by all. I will definitely return.

Had a fantastic dining experience at the London Chop House. The ambiance was unique and had a roaring twenties appeal (wouldn't have been surprised to look over and see Al Capone smoking a cigar in a booth). Service was a little slow and was there for about 90 minutes (longer lunch hour than I was planning) but the food was wonderful and all an all a nice time. Lunch included Kusshi oysters and a cup of tomato bisque followed by pan-seared perch (server's recommendation) that was paired with two large prawns and jumbo-lump crab meat with a lemon butter sauce (a little too rich with the sauce but still delicious).

Invited good customer to the Chop House during a business symposium due to the good rankings here. I was worried since some reviews were poor though. I have to say that overall the Chop House was exceptional. Located in the basement in downtown the dark interior gives it a real old school feeling as if Frank Sinatra would have eaten there. The tables all had good lighting and the 2 person jazz band gave the place a classy feel. The food was superb. We had oysters and Scallops as appetizers. Everything was fresh and the scallops were done perfectly. When I go with friends and colleagues I know we often order steaks and have them cut up so we can share. We got the Porterhouse and Rib Eye medium Rare. Cooked to perfection they were fantastic. We got all three sauces which were great - especially the bernaise was done just right. The cauliflower with Gruyere and Mushrooms sides were sized right for 3 to share and tasted wonderful. For desert we had the gown up milkshake which was a real treat - lots of ice cream and booze mixed together with chocolate frozen to the inside of the glass. mmm Service was slow enough to allow for lots of conversation, attention was put on the details with crumbs being cleared and glasses of water filled constantly. Wait staff was very friendly and nice - not pompous. My only gripe was that the nice bottle of red wine was straight from the wine cellar and much too cold to drink. But we had time to let is warm up. Beware a 24 oz bone in rib eye is $60. So the meal is very good and I did not mind paying for it. The funny part was that the taxi ride back to our hotel was quite the opposite - the AC didn't work (it was still 80degrees), all the warning lights in the cab were on and we thought the wheels were going to fall off at any minute.

Enjoyed an excellent dinner at this iconic Detroit restaurant. Super menu selection, reasonably good wine list, friendly service, great atmosphere and live "background" music. We'll come back...just hope they can attract enough customers to stay in business. Place was almost empty on a Tuesday night. Didn't visit the upstairs cigar bar this time around but it's a nice feature.

AVOID! Old school place, decor looks great. Don't let the looks fool you. Service was slow and the food was worthy of an Applebees and definitly not worth the money. My steak along with a few of others were overcooked mine was ordered as medium rare and came as medium to medium well. The others in my party were done with their meals and my replacement steak had not yet arrived. I told the server to forget my order and not bring it. 5 minutes later the manager along with the server come with my steak which I refused. We finished up and left and the manager is throwing me hard looks and attitude. He said to me "you have a problem"? I replied "I don't but you do, you have a problem with customer service" He was a jerk and does not understand how to recover from an obvious flaw in their kitchen. PlusI had to hunt for the oyster in the oysters rockefeller! Avoid at all costs.

I would have given the whole 5 stars as our meal, the jazz trio and waitstaff were fabulous but one small thing that bugged the heck out of me was.......in between the bands sets, they blasted the radio? Some awful young country music right over our table which really put a damper on my dinner and experience. What the ?????? I got the Filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes. Fabulous. James was a great waiter, too.

Fine Detroit dining with cozy, old world ambience. Very friendly staff accompanied with top quality steakhouse fare. The oysters Rockefeller, perch, and filet mignon were tops.

My fiance and I had lunch here on a weekday. We were greeted promptly by a friendly hostess who checked our coats. The booth where we were seated was roomy and comfortable. They had a nice variety of beverage choices. The menu is pretty "old school" but did have good options. We shared the oysters Rockefeller and the dish was well composed. The flavor of the oysters was not overpowered. He had the tenderloin medallions as an entree and I had the wagyu with sunny side up eggs. Both our entrees were perfectly cooked and each had its own unique flavor profile. My wagyu was minimally seasoned and allowed to shine on its own. I seriously enjoy when such a fine cut of meat is not drowned in a sauce or over seasoned. Our dessert was a fun toasted coconut encrusted scoop of ice cream with a rich chocolate ganache underneath. The service we received from our waiter was pretty good. Nothing was glaringly missed but nothing really wowed me either. We'd certainly return for another meal.

...we came in from the bitter cold for a drink and appetizer based on a recommendation we had received from the folks at the Grand Trunk. Loved the dark/basement atmosphere with the live jazz in the background. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed talking with the bartenders who provided us with additional "must does" while in Detroit. The martini's, shrimp cocktail, and oysters were the perfect meal for us.

What an awesome place, This is just a Great old fashion totally classic place, with a lot of really cool history. Detroit may have it's problems but this is a place that makes it worth going to. Started at the bar, Chuck makes a very good Manhattan, the calamari was best I've ever had. We also enjoyed oysters on the half shell that were very good along with the beef tips. Then we were seated and the owner stopped by to welcome us. The wine was very good along with the meal. I had the Ribeye and it was cooked just as I had asked along with a baked potato that was excellent. Also enjoy the LCH Hummer, well worth trying after dinner. I was with a group of five others and everyone enjoyed their meal. Add the live jazz in the back ground and you get five starts. We also went up to the cigar bar and enjoyed that as well.

The room is beautiful. Nice and dark with a clubby feel. The bartenders are excellent (Luis being a particular favorite). I had a salad and an appetizer that was decent, if unspectacular, but fellow diners raved about their plate-sized cuts of beef. The crowd were mostly at the age where their meal could very possibly be their last, but a younger crew were filing in as I left. Overall, this is exactly the type of restaurant every city needs. Old school and cool, and not pretending to be anything but.

I visited the London Chop House on 3/22 and had a very nice time. The atmosphere is great, very dark, and old-school. Wear a tie. Since I was dining alone, the service was very quick and my food arrived much faster than I expected. Waiter was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Dover Sole Meuniere. It was perfect and the portion size was great. Cheesecake for dessert was very good as well. Total including tip for a beer, fish and cake was $70. I'll be back!

We were looking forward to try the restaurant as soon as we heard that they are opening back! Read the Yelp review, and asked around friends - and learned that the restaurant has mixed reviews. Some enjoyed, some didn't, at all. We love Big Rock in Birmingham, so we are always little hesitant in trying out new steak house, for the fear of disappointment. We always end up comparing the food. Anyway, we ordered two soups and a salad as our starter. I had a crab bisque, and hubby had a french onion soup. Both were delicious although I do not think it's worth $8 or $7. The chop house salad was also delicious, with great dressing - for $12, we shared the plate. Here's the bad part: A group next to us were obnoxious and hated the fact that our tables were SO close. They were doing "show me the money"...showing off how much each other had in their wallet. One guy had $1200, the other $1800, so the other guy won - whatever. Service stopped as soon as the entree was placed on our table. "Here's your entree" to "Are you done with that?". The waiter decided to pay attention to larger group sitting next to us, never asked us how our entree is/was or we needed anything else. I ordered short ribs and my hubby had a fillet. My hubby asked for medium rare but the meat was medium, cooked throughout with a bit of pink in the middle...and it was SUPER DRY. Only a spoon full of sauce came with the fillet, and hubby wanted to ask for more, but as mentioned earlier, waiter stopped waiting us. My short ribs were really tender and delicious, well, the first few bites. After that, I got so bored/tired of the taste, it lacked some good seasoning. We ordered two sides - roasted cauliflower and fries. "Roasted" but it was luke warm and tasted as if the cauliflowers were boiled, not roasted. Fries were over cooked, tasted like burnt oil. McDonald's fries are WAY better. We left more than half of our meal besides soup and salad, and left the restaurant. The total bill came to $170, of which we believe was a disappointing experience. We love Big Rock, and we have learned that we shouldn't try other restaurants thinking it is going to be like the Big Rock. Here's the HORRIBLE PART: After eating at the restaurant, both me and my husband had a TERRIBLE stomach ache, up all night, throwing up and diarrhea (sorry if you are reading this while eating). Not sure if I can say for sure it's the food at the restaurant, but it seem as though their food caused us the "detox" :( If you own the restaurant, please feel free to contact me and I will give another shot, as I would have really liked to enjoy the restaurant. Thanks!

This was for a special occasion. My father used to work at Hudson's in downtown Detroit and had great memories of mad-men style lunches with co-workers. He said the place looked just like he remembered and told me some great stories about his visits here. Unfortunately, that's where the warm fuzzies stopped. The menu has a lot of tasty things I wanted to order and the bar has a great selection of scotch. We started with the steak tartare and the tuna tartare followed by 2 dozen oysters. Both the steak and tuna were disappointing. Neither had much flavor. While the presentation was ok, the taste wasn't there. Pepper helped a little but we had to flag down our a different waiter because we couldn't find ours nor did he offer when he dropped it off. The oysters were a huge disappointment which is partly my fault as the time of year isn't right for oysters. Half of them were spawning and therefore were not a good consistency. You should be able to get a good batch from a good supplier but these should not have been served. We sent most of them back. This was a birthday lunch that was supposed to bring back great memories for my father and turned out to be a very disappointing event. This was for lunch and dinner might be better. Who knows maybe the chops are good. But I don't know if I will go back.

A friend of mine called in our reservation for our anniversary because he is good friends with one of the servers. We were looking forward to getting some nice "chop house" treatment with the call ahead. Wah wah...:) Apparently whomever my friend spoke with did not pass on the message. Not only were we not seated in his section, when I asked for him he did not even know who we were. Service was okay nonetheless. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere just fine. Crab cake app...very good. Lump Crab Bisque...so-so...not thick and rich enough for my taste. Cauliflower w/Guyere Cheese was very good and we split an entree of very tasty Mess of Perch on top of mashed and I'm glad we split it because it was huge and we couldn't even finish it. Unfortunately, it was a weekday and the piano player was done by 9:30 and what was a totally lively crowded place at 9pm was dead by 10pm. Overall I did really enjoy the ambiance of the downtown detroit my parents used to know and love and we will go back on a random weekend but not for a special occasion. Side note: A very funny part of our evening was when the server gave us a congratulatory anniversary card and set in in the middle of the table...that was hilarious! No piece of cake...no glass of champagne for a toast for picking this restaurant to celebrate a milestone...nope they gave us "A CARD" HA! I thought they could do a bit better. 3 starts says it all. It was A-ok.

WOW what an establishment. Very intimate, Very Classy in the 60's gangster kind of way. This is what makes the London Chop House special. I give it a 5 Star on Ambiance. But the Steak, the Strip, was just a basic piece of meat. If it weren't for the sauces they offered, I may have sent the steak back. Plus it needed salt and pepper. and for $45 (or so) it should of been perfect. 2 stars for the meat, 4 stars for the sauces. Now Dessert. This is what made the trip. Adult Milkshake is the best ever! 5 stars. But overall it was a great experience, I would recommend it. Bring your money, it will cost you. Salad (2), Steak (2), Garlic Mashed Potato, Charred Asparagus, Wine (4 glasses) = $230

Excellent meal, polite to children! The very best filet, and Spanish coffee around town!!!

Very reasonably priced lunch menu. Great ambiance and excellent food. The clam chowder was especially good as they don't skimp on the clam.

LCH has a cigar lounge in the same building. You can order off the LCH menu or you can buy sushi! Great selection of cigars from $10 - $35 GREAT FOOD
