Decent quantity of food but the taste was only ok. This is a good place to go for late night food after a night out on the two.

Let's start off with the good. The service was fast and friendly. The food however was pretty gross. My burrito and side of rice tasted like something I'd get out of a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner box. I ate half of it only because I was starving. Definitely more Tex than Mex at this place. No Bueno

Best place for after Tigers game and before casino!!! Awesome chips and salsa and best tacos I have had. Super fast service and great prices. Everybody is friendly, and very reasonably priced too!!! Give it a try.

Pretty much bad from start to finish. Came in yesterday before the Tigers' 1pm game. They were way understaffed. It looked like someone forgot to plan for the increased gameday traffic. The bowl of chips we got looked as if you emptied the bottom of 15 bags of tortilla chips and gave us all of the crumbs. The service was slow and they were out of two of the four beers on tap. I ordered a beer and so did the person I was with. My beer was not delivered as I was told it was "being fixed." 10 minutes later I asked what was up with the beer and then changed my order. The tap was not "fixed" while we were there. I ordered the grande burro loco or whatever it's called. It wasn't bad. I asked what kind of beans came in it and the waitress told me pinto. I asked if I could substitute black beans and she said that they don't have black beans. I understand not being able to make a substitution, but not having black beans at all? Really? We had a coupon for this place and probably won't be back. The service was super slow and spotty, but the waitress was really apologetic after it died down.

The enchiladas blanca's is great here and their bandito wings with the lemon cilantro flavoring is amazing! My friend had the deep fried tacos and he enjoyed them. Fast service. Great margaritas. I have dinner here once every couple weeks with friends.

Overall, a good Mexican place. I'd go back next time I'm in Greektown craving Mexican food. I got the deep fried tacos, which were good, but I think I might have actually like the regular tacos better. The rice was excellent, but the beans were so-so. The free chips and salsa were delicious. I also got a frozen strawberry margarita, which was the best margarita I've ever had. I don't know whether it was really well made or just really weak, but I don't really care. It was delicious.

This review is for the salsa club upstairs above the restaurant. I've been trying to get my husband to go salsa dancing with me for YEARS! I love everything about it. It's sensual and innocent yet, sexy and vivacious. I haven't been to too many salsa clubs, but I like the crowd at this one. Everyone is very friendly, no one is pushy. If you don't know how to salsa dance it doesn't matter, someone will teach you and make you feel comfortable while doing it. The music is fun and energetic. It's such a wonderful place to let your hair down and have a fun time.

Word of mouth at work pegs Loco as a top choice for quick, filling lunch within walking distance. It won't knock your socks off, but Loco will do the trick to assuage a grumbling stomach. The usual Greektown crowds avoid Loco during the lunch hour except for Tuesdays, when $1 tacos pull in everyone from a multi-block radius. Earlier or later arrivals can expect to be seated, served, and settled on any other day of the week. Nonetheless, there's a quick order station for office workers who need to dash. I chose Loco to meet an associate for a quick business lunch. Specials are thin on the ground -- just pork carnitas, that day -- and menu prices higher than average, about $10-15 per person not including beverages. Serving sizes are fairly generous, on par with many suburban Mexican restaurants. Regular drinks, like pop, water, and horchata, come in enormous XL-sized plastic tumblers. I couldn't even down half on a 90'F May afternoon. Maybe if the Tigers' pitching staff came with me that afternoon, we could make a go of it. Expect few surprises on a menu peppered by enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, and side dishes in every standard configuration. A thin red salsa (mild) and chips arrived on the table as soon as the waitress had us placed by the window. My friend had vegetarian quesadillas, which she nibbled daintily. My shrimp tacos were generous enough to be split into lunch and a light dinner, served up with refried beans and unremarkably bland Spanish rice. I could've used some sriracha or hot salsa to liven up the meal, but I've come to understand the American palate generally prefers less vivid textures and flavours. The shrimp pieces were huge, though, no scrawny salad poppers here. Our waitress came by frequently to check on our progress and see if we were ready for the bill. Since we obviously had a stack of paperwork on the table and chatted merrily, we were clearly in no rush. I will chalk it up to the lunch hour and presuming we needed to leave at any moment, but with how many open tables they had, she was starting to become intrusive. At least she smiled about it? Loco rates at a solid 2.5 stars, but I'll round up to 3 given the dearth of inexpensive food options outside of Greektown row.

Just saying, Locos is a Mexican Restaurant more than bar n grill. But is pretty good.

Went in here for lunch around 3 pm during my workday. The place was as good as empty. Apparently, lunch specials are over at 3. It was maybe 10 mins after 3. Not to say I was expecting it, but a goodwill gesture would have been for the waitress to make an exception and allow us to order a lunch special. Anyway. Speaking of the waitress -- she rushed us to pick a seat, rushed us to order (Why?? Nobody was there!), then disappeared when our food came. We got her in time to ask for our bill and a carryout box. I had a taco salad and it was BIG and pretty good. No complaints on the food. Well, except for the olives with the seeds. I'd rather they be in a Greek salad than a taco salad, but that's just my personal choice.

Been here a few times but it has been awhile. Must admit it has not changed much if at all. Good chips and fresh salsa with typical Mexican food that middle of the road. That being said it is a good option for Mexican food if you are in the downtown area. Prices are reasonable and the service was not bad. Place could be a little cleaner but after all is said and done enjoyed the food and in a pinch and want Mexican would try again.

  • Carole H.

Certainly not your best Mexican food ever, but it's not the worst. Great location in Greektown, walking distance to wherever else you're going, whether it's a Tigers game or night at the bar. Tuesdays = dollar tacos. Get there early for lunch if you want a table without a wait.

Had to send my food back to be microwaved. I'm very discouraged as I expect it to be tampered with at this point. Combo tacos is a very difficult option, and shrimp tacos taste and smell very fishy. Sit tiring at the end of my table ice benn hit 3 times to this point. This place is awful avoid at all possible. Go to mcdonalds or any chain place. Do not know waitress name as she didn't introduce herself. Team was interesting but it was after opening day unfortunately wait staff had no compassion or interest. Avoid at all costs.

The Good: Nice and friendly service, Selena music was great. Guacamole is good. They gave me a generous amount of salsa, which is thin, but good enough. I've had far worse. Everything else: Carried out for lunch. The food is just OK, which to me means good enough to consume to eliminate hunger pangs; nothing I need to go back for. I got a combination with a beef corn taco, a chicken enchilada, and a beef chalupa. The ground beef looked gross and was in a taco bell-like commercial corn shell. I gave the taco away-could not do that to my stomach. The chalupa looked like a mini taco salad with the same grody ground beef. It had lettuce, tomato, and some melted shredded packaged looking regular old, non Mexican type cheese. I gave that away as well, took off a lil bit of the shell to taste-usual taco salad fried flour shell. The enchilada was nothing special either. The chicken was just shredded chicken in a tomatoey sauce. It was tender enough but did not taste stewed or particularly flavorful. Refried beans and rice were just ok-whatever, not nasty or anything but "who cares". Bottom line: It's just Mexican food done wrong. My palate did not feel like it left Detroit and went to Mexico or even Texas. I just didn't taste any chiles or smokiness or anything authentic enough to make it worth eating.

Best thing about the Loco is there usually great service. Especially if you are going to a Red Wing or Detroit Lions game and looking for a bite to eat. I like the tamales the best but the taco salad is also good.

  • Jenni H.

Ah, Loco...takes me back to the days of sorority date-parties in college. I'm definitely a whole lot less likely to stop here now that my tastes have, um, matured a little bit, but it is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat--just don't expect anything fancy. If you have the time, drive over to southwest Detroit to get food that's much more delicious and authentic.

  • Missy C.

Service was not that great. Our menus were just put on the table and the hostess walked away. Lots of different people brought our food, touching the plates improperly. The food was mediocre. You could tell it was all pre made, especially with how quick it came out. Lots of Mexican restaurants are like this and have decent food. My biggest problem was the price. Everything was like $5 more than it should be for the quality of the food. Plus there was a big group of loud, drunk people in the restaurant. Definitely not a family friendly place. I probably won't go back.

I learned a valuable lesson from Loco last week. Do not go to Loco on $1 taco day. My friend and I went there for lunch on $1 taco day, and we were sat at a table, and sat probably 15 minutes (or more) waiting to be greeted by our server and get our order taken. Once our food came, we waited probably just as long to get a check or anything else we needed. Our quick lunch took us over an hour. It's just crazy to me that the service would be so slow when they know they're slammed like this every week (I imagine they are) Maybe I'll just have to hunt down a taco truck downtown.

There are several goods and several bads about this place. First the good! The food is pretty great. The best part is that I am a vegetarian, and they have several different vegetarian options. I love places like that. I love the location, because I am a huge fan of downtown Detroit. And lastly, I enjoy the giant bar. The bad... The service is usually pretty dismal. If you are looking to have a quick lunch, go elsewhere. If you don't mind being there over an hour, go and enjoy yourself. The pop always tastes flat. I am not sure what is wrong with their machine, but I have never gone there and enjoyed a soda. The beans in the dishes are sometimes really runny.

Like Randy P. Said... Just average. Nothing to tell all your friends about just your standard Mexican joint.

This place serves the typical Americanized version of Mexican food you'll find in about 90% of the Mexican places you will find in the Midwest and probably most of the US. Yes, I know people in California and visitors to Mexican Village in Detroit like to think it's somehow more authentic- it may be, but probably not by much. Like most Mexican places, where menus are notoriously huge, few of them do all things well. Loco is not an exception. Some dishes they do better than others, and I will agree with reviews that said they play it safe and the food is a little on the bland side for Mexican. I do, however, understand the need for restaurants to appeal to a wide range of palates. That being said, because you are Mexican or your Mom cooked Mexican food, is absolutely no basis for comparison or discussions about authenticity.. of course Mexican food made in your kitchen and tailored to your own tastes is going to be more to your liking than something made for the masses. I don't see the point in faulting Loco because there salsa doesn't burn the roof of your mouth off like Grandma's did. The food here, for the most part, ranges from decent to good. However, I've been here enough times to acknowledge their inconsistencies, so if you said you had something that wasn't great, it's not like I wouldn't believe you. Where I'd really liked to see Loco improve is the service. I've had good and I've had bad, and you just never know. Where I've been 100% disappointed with them is with large groups, say more than 8. Most restaurants seem to struggle with groups to the extent that I've actually decline invitations to places when tons of people are going- a pet peeve of mine, I guess. But Loco has done a worse job than most by not getting on top of the situation when they see a big table come in (getting servers to help with drinks, waters, etc). I've seen a few reviews attesting to the same. Decent food, a little slightly on the high end price wise, spotty service- but doable if you're in the area and in the mood Mexican with a groups less than 8. 2.5 stars

This place gets one star only because Yelp doesn't have the option to give it no stars. The place is dirty and the staff very unfriendly. Four of us stopped in for a late night bite after a show at St. Andrew's Hall and afterword I wished we had simply gone to Five Guys. I should have known that if you want decent Mexican food, go to Mexican Town. The waiter asked us what we wanted to drink, pushing beers. He listed a few, including Bud Light and Modelo. Foolishly, none of asked whether these were bottles or draft, assuming they were bottles. They were 22 ounce drafts costing $6 each. My Modelo tasted like the tap had been cleaned about 12 years ago. The food we ordered was fair, but unmemorable. We had wanted to sit in a booth but were told those sections were closed. Instead we sat a high top near the entrance over looking a closed off stair well that had plenty of trash laying in the bottom of it. The "rail" next to my chair overlooking the dingy pit below was an unfinished 2x4 on top with ratty, unpainted, cheap particleboard serving as the facing. Very classy! I couldn't get out of the place fast enough.

I went here a few weeks ago for the first time, and it wasn't bad. The food is over priced and bland but at the same times it was fresh tasting. Our waiter was nice and attentive and the overall experience was fine. I give this place four star because of the cleanliness and our waiter was good.

I'd describe the food at this place as what white trailer trash thinks Mexican/tex-mex should be like. My first clue should have been when they brought out my Nega Modelo (A DARK Mexican beer) with a fracking lime in it. I should have walked out then. Next on the table was a thin, weak salsa served with grocery bag tortilla chips. I hadn't eaten more than two chips before my order was on my table. I wasn't aware that Taco Bell had re-branded themselves. I was left looking at an obviously microwaved (what was supposed to be a 'giant') burrito platter, who's flour tortilla was the consistency of wet flour dough, bland ground beef, and pathetic flat piles of beans and rice. It's clear that whoever came up with the recipes for this place has never even been near Mexico - or Texas for that matter. This restaurant is obviously geared towards back-woods yokels who come to the 'big city' in order to throw away their money at one of the local casinos. At least they were considerate enough to not charge me for this travesty of a meal. Avoid at all costs!

I really like this place! It is one of my favorite places to grab lunch. I always come right around the "noon" rush and I've never had to wait for a seat, I think because this place is tucked away from the greektown strip a little. They'll give you chips and salsa. I've ordered different things and they are always quick in bringing out the order and stopping by to check in and refill your drink. I think my favorite was the beef quesadilla. The right amount of beef and cheese and sauce and then all the extras on the side so you can prepare it how you'd like. They include lettuce, salsa, diced tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole. I like that they include the guacamole, I feel like a lot of other places charge you extra. They are also willing and about to split the check without a fuss which is nice, because who carries cash anymore? I do want to point out that this is a Tex-Mex place, not an authentic Mexican restaurant. For that experience you'd be better off going somewhere in Mexicantown a few miles away.

  • Tabitha C.

Just awful! How can you miss up a taco salad? They used lettuce from a salad bag, which took up 2/3 of the salad. Also the chips and salsa were disgusting. The chips were stale. Terrible. Just terrible. STAY AWAY!!

Came here for dinner the other day around 5pm with four people. We were seated right away, the place was basically empty. The booth seat I say in sunk way down and was extremely uncomfortable so I had to sit a little bit close to my mom on that side. Waitress brought out basket of chips and salsa. Nothing special, at all. We all added hot sauce to the salsa which made it way better. Portion was generous, though. For entree I ordered their steak tacos that came with cilantro, beans, and rice. I liked them, but they just weren't really my thing. The flour soft tacos were very thin, even with two, that is was practically ripping apart. The flavor just wasn't there with the soft shells at all. I ended up scraping the filling of the tacos out and just mixing it with my beans and rice and then it was actually way better tasting to me. Overall, cheap, quick, and very filling. You can use comps here to make it even cheaper if you wish.

I came here for lunch, ordered some wings and tamales. The wings were so greasy and they tasted bad; tamales were small and dry! how can you serve dried tamales to customer? I was told this place has been around for a long time. However, coming from Arizona, I can say food quality here is below average.

For about two months, my friend and I were here almost every weekend! She introduced me to the place, and I'm glad she did. Since then, I have introduced five other people to Loco's. The fajita chicken quesadilla's are the best!! I haven't ordered anything else besides those, but I can tell you that they are fantastic. I'm in love with the chips & salsa as well. The chips are nice and fresh & the salsa is perfect for my taste. There was one time I had a problem with being waited on. My boyfriend and I waited a little bit until our waiter came to our table, but any other time the service has been great. I'm definitely a fan of this place & will continue dining here!

I don't understand all the negativity Ive read on this place. I mean if you want REAL Mexican GO TO MEXICO! This place is more for late night, or a friendly get together. Not HIGH CLASS! Its the BEST place to get the Mexican sandwich with beef! Ive never had it anywhere that came close to this place...Full of Cheese and beef.... amazing flavor. If you want that complete "AUTHENTIC" all around mexican, go to Mexican town.

Horrible service. Drink never refilled once. Never once was asked if I wanted a box for my food. Order came out wrong and I didn't see my waitress once to have it fixed. Food was sub-par as well.

  • Randy P.

This place isnt bad or good, its just average. The food is your standard fare Mexican that you would expect. They do also have several items that you would not find at a standard Mexican restaurant though. The service is good and the meals come fast, but expect to pay a few more dollars per meal here.

  • Anjelica A.

I came here the other night and was disappointed. If you're not Mexican or you like Tex-Mex, you'll probably like this place - there was a DJ and it was a fun atmosphere. The service was pretty good and the food was fast even though the place was relatively busy for a Tuesday night. But the food itself - meh. The rice was bland, the beans were bland. I had the burrito dinner and it only came with two burritos, when most Mexican restaurants would give me 3 for a $9 burrito dinner plate. And the burritos themselves were not great. The ingredients tasted like they were bought from Meijer and the chunky beef was very hard and difficult to chew. Like I said, though: maybe you like Tex-Mex, or you're out in the area and you want a place that stays open relatively late. Or you're not Mexican and looking for a dressed up version of something you could make at home. If any of those are the case, you might really like this place.

    (2)
  • Victoria A.

The salsa is made fresh and is super delish! I love their food and dine her often. I don't understand the negative reviews either. The place could use some updating but the food is awesome.

  • Cy W.

This place is a JOKE! Greektown of course specializes in overpriced mediocrity, but this place takes the cake. Most dishes are over $15 which is RIDICULOUS for a Mexican restaurant. But again its downtown in Greektown so I can expect that but the food was so plain to just downright bad. The shrimp tacos looked just liked Taco Bell except they had no taste. Taco Bell still has taste. The chimichanga was ridiculously small compared to more authentic places. The fried beans tasted like pureed canned pintos. This place deserves a zero, but I can't give it that.

Best food I have had since visiting Detroit. Service was great and food was exactly what I was looking for! I highly recommend this place to any and everyone!

  • Amber K.

We've been coming here on and off for 13 years and been very happy. Service is fast, food is served hot and prices are reasonable. It's walking distance to Greektown, Ford Field and Comerica Park. Great stop before or after a game.

  • A.J. S.

The Salsa tasted like ketchup. The chips tasted like they were stale. The prices were decent which is why it didn't get a lower rating. The services was ok, though the waitress was a little slow. If you like your food to be anywhere close to authentic avoid this place, but if you are looking for a quick, cheap mexican place in downtwn detroit, this place is ok

    (2)
  • Katerina S.

I came into this place with an open mind. I saw the bad reviews and being from California and Mexican-American, I know the full spectrum of how mexican and mexican-ish food can taste like. haha. The service was really good, and by the looks of it if you're going for drinks only, then you'll be ok. But if you're looking for mexican or mexican inspired food PLEASE look *anywhere* else. I honestly wish I would have taken advice from the reviews and not have gone. I never knew or wanted to know "mexican food" could be so extremely bland. I never knew FOOD could be so bland. The 'sauce' on top of the burrito was basically just some tomato sauce with no seasoning in it. If you wanted your burrito to be a tiny bit 'spiced' or flavored you'd have to put hot sauce on each bite. Lame. I honestly feel bad giving this place such a bad review because our waitress was awesome & service was great... But it is what it is, Blandest "Mexican" food on the planet. Taco Bell is heaps better than this place in both respects to taste and even authenticity. Don't let the cooks in the back fool you. In short: If you want Mexican food, go anywhere else. If you come back wanting to give a bad review don't say I didn't warn ya!

The food and service was ok at best. We ordered a pitcher of frozen Marquita's it was the worst I had ever had. The flavor was watered down and very little alcohol the waiter said it was because it was a frozen one the ice waters it down. It was the biggest waist of $ 24.00 for the pitcher

Pros: +Taco Tuesday Promo +Located in Greektown +Open late +Complimentary Chips & Salsa +Huge Tumblers Cons: -Pricey for its category -Charge for condiments -Unprofessional Service To start of the chicken tacos on Taco Tuesday($1.25 per taco) were delicious, the beef on the other hand not so much. The taco's here come with shredded stewed chicken rather than grilled which may not suit everyone pallet, but I loved them. The salads here are standard texmex fair(pico, corn, tortilla etc) and nothing to crave later. You get a complimentary warm tortilla chips and salsa basket upon greeting from your server. The drink tumblers are at least a liter each. The downfall of this place is the service, our waitress took two smoking breaks and spend her time sitting at the bar yelling at the tigers game on tv with other customers. Lastly for the pricing, besides the promotion on Tuesdays, are not as good of a value as Mexican Town a few miles down from here.

No Loco, No Loco, No No NOOOO! The place that I had so much fun dancing at in July? Completely revampbed into something just south of horrible! I went here expectign to have another great night of Latin Dancing. Latin dancing usually includes Salsa (the most popular Latin Dance) right? Nope, not here. Spent 3 hours here and heard not one single salsa song. I did however here an endless amount of Bachata, 2 Merengue songs, and more than enough PitBull and Daddy Yankee to last me for the remainder of the year. I'll never go back here again.

The atmosphere of this place is fun. I just went to pick up dinner for Cinco de Mayo and wanted to stay. They were passing out sombreros and the people seemed very happy. That being said my food was less than tasty. I got back home ready to devour and was disappointed at first bite. I have traveled to Mexico and several countries in Central America so I have an expectation when it comes to that Latin flavor. I ordered the chicken enchiladas for nearly $13 and they had absolutely no flavor. Granted I only tried one thing on the menu. I can't can give an accurate assessment of everything else on the menu but what I had was not good. If you just want to drink and hang out this may be a fun place for you but if you are hungry and craving authentic Tex-Mex flavor maybe this is not the place to get it.

  • Lori G.

I've only been there about 3 times and each time it got worse. I really like the atmosphere (hence the one star). It gets no stars for food or service. If anyone remembers how bad ChiChi's food got right before they went out of business, this compares. The food tastes processed (like a reheated frozen dinner). Our service was ok, but the last time we were there after dinner (YUCK) 2 ice creams were ordered for the two children with us. We pointed out we just wanted small icecreams and we were served 2 giant sundaes that were over $5 each. I would not recommend. It's too bad, because a good Tex-Mex place would be great downtown.

The food is really great. So are the margaritas. The service leaves much to be desired. In fact, one time we hadn't been greeted for 30 minutes so I placed an order at the bar and asked if it were ok that we had a picnic in their dining room. The bartender felt terrible and took care of us from there. She was great. I'm sure it was just an isolated incident and we have been back since. Still, crappy service. The crawfish quesadillas, nachos, and blue margaritas are our faves!

  • Stephen H.

I've been coming here for years just for salad with avacado or chips and salsa and a pacifico. They have the best salsa. Anyhow, before Christmas I went on a date. I ordered enchiladas and she ordered something different. When I got home that night I developed gastroenteritus very badly and so did she. It lasted for days. Service chronically slow too. I don't think I'll be back...

I luv this place. Great service, food, and music. If you like mexican food you got to try this place. Oh and the drinks are good. I have to come back on one dollar taco Tuesday!

  • Shae C.

I've only been here twice (the first time was Cinco De Mayo & I got a free sombrero, candy from a pinata & had a BLAST). I ordered both times the deep fried tacos which are SO good to me. The margaritas to me (& the couple sitting next to me) were very lackluster & I had to order a side shot of tequila to pour in it. Other than that the service was cool (it kinda went downhill the second time I went & sat at the bar). The salsa was unimpressive though.

Food - good, not great. I don't even remember what I got because we were here so long I was hungry again by the time we left. Standard Americanized Mexican fare. Lots of cheese and sauce. Service - Awful. So very awful I won't be back no matter what. I work downtown and walked over with a few co-workers for our lunch hour. It's called a lunch hour because, ideally, we'd be gone and back within an hour. That's how it's supposed to work, anyway. And you'd think that any restaurant in a big city catering to the business lunch crowd would totally understand that fact and offer a quick turnaround on lunch items. Other restaurants manage to do a great job of this. But we were at Loco for 2 1/2 hours. For lunch. On a weekday, when the restaurant was at maybe 30% capacity. We were seated promptly, but then the waiting began. We waited for our server (I'll be right with you!) several times. We waited for our drinks. We waited for the server to come back and take our order. At this point, I ordered a drink refill. I wouldn't see that refill for another 2 hours, no joke, though I asked for it at least 3 more times. After ordering the food, we waited, and waited, and waited for the food to come out. We demolished the nachos and salsa on the table and never got a refill. Food came and was gone in 15 minutes. Since all 4 of us were only carrying plastic, we asked if they could split the bill. Another bad idea; that took over a half hour. When she finally brought the individual bills back, we immediately gave her our cards, which she took over to the credit card machine and set on the counter. Then she walked away and disappeared for at least 10 minutes. This was the point at which we, had we not already given her our cards, would have just got up and left. One of my co-workers went over to the credit card machine and got someone to process the bill. We left without tipping a single cent (I NEVER skip a tip) and didn't see our waitress again after we gave her our cards. She just set them down and walked away. In short, if you're considering going here for lunch, you might want to reconsider. Unless you're an executive with a comfy job and a 3 hour lunch break, this place is just way too slow. It might have been a decent place to grab some beers and watch the game, but after this initial experience I have no desire to go back at all.

If you're craving Mexican and you don't feel like leaving the immediate downtown Detroit area, you're going to Loco's. You'll pay a lot more than Mexicantown too. Pros about Loco's: open late, excellent margaritas, open late, they do cinco de mayo, location, huge portions if you're into that. The food is good, decent Mexican food. I've gravitated towards the taco salad, which is huge. You won't escape out of here under $10 for lunch, and definitely not for dinner.

My two good friends and I tried to get into the nightclub last night, but my one buddy who was visiting from Phoenix was turned down for having tennis shoes on. I understand there is a dress code and this wouldn't have been an issue, but the fact that the bouncer let some young punk in right after who had tennis shoes on, it became a problem. When we confronted the bouncer about this, he stood there and did not say a word, which was very unprofessional of him. If this was some fancy nightclub in a real city, and not some disgusting place in the middle of a cesspool called Detroit, I would be able to comprehend this dress code. But the bottom line is that it is next to a strip club in a city that for all intents and purposes is a third world country. Instead of trying to class up the place by not letting in someone for wearing tennis shoes, (nevermind they were designer shoes and he was very well dressed) you should try and take whatever customers you can get because your business will most likely turn into a boarded up structure in a few years like every other building in that horrible city. Good riddance!

The bar tender on Monday and Tuesday is especially lovely and I will always tip her. The rest of the staff at loco are great people as well. Not much for the Tex-Mex but I like drinking there.

Certainly not your best Mexican food ever, but it's not the worst. Great location in Greektown, walking distance to wherever else you're going, whether it's a Tigers game or night at the bar. Tuesdays = dollar tacos. Get there early for lunch if you want a table without a wait.

2 stars for the mediocre restaurant. The food and service are just ok. 5 stars for salsa/latin dancing on Saturdays! For all you math geeks (like myself), I realize that 2 stars and 5 stars don't average out to 2 stars. That's because this Yelp page is for the restaurant, and salsa night is put on by a guy who just uses the venue space above Loco's. Even the bartenders at his events are way better than those at the restaurant!

I am not completely sold on Loco's but it isn't bad. I was in there the other day for lunch and I ordered the lunch special (I think it changes everyday) - that day it was chicken enchiladas (no sides) for $5 which is a steal at this place. Their food is very pricey for Mexican - to order the dinner (which is to say - add rice and beans) I would have paid double! It is about 60% more expensive than anywhere in Mexicantown that I have ever eaten. Ok, so the enchiladas were ok - I have had better (heck, I have made better). Their chips and salsa are pretty good - I liked them. They have an impressive Margarita selection (I was there for lunch - eating alone - and I am not an alcoholic so I didn't try one ... plus I had to go back to work, otherwise I might have). They are opened untill 4am on the weekends (stop serving alcohol at 2am - obviously) but you can still get food making this a great place to sober up as well. Their drink prices were reasonable - better than at a night club and comparable to what you might pay at a chain restaurant. They seem to have a pretty good selection of beer as well. They win points for serving Coke products! Their service is good (it didn't 'wow' me but I have no complaints). It was quick and friendly. My advice: don't come downtown just for Loco's if you want Mexican; however, if you are going to a Tigers game and you want to have a pre- or post- game meal and drink, this is definately a good option. Next time I will try the fajitas - per janelle p.'s review.

The salsa and chips and the beginning of the meal were good, but don't eat too much because the one basket is all your going to get and you will want it to get the taste of your meal out of your mouth. I order the enchiladas and my boyfriend order the fajitas both were awful. The enchiladas were bland and the fajita seasoning was horrible. No wonder they have so many different sauces on the table. The prices were a little high for the taste of the food. We will never go back.

The best Tex-Mex around. Seriously. All of my friends love this place. I order enchiladas at every Mexican place I go to and the Chicken Enchiladas here are definitely some of the best I have ever had. The margaritas are average. The service is spectacular. Plus, it's attached to a strip club. What's better than that? I was in Loco's eating during the final four game. The bathroom line was out of control so the female manager said "Ladies, come with me!" I was lead through a non-perishable food storage hallway to another door. It opened and all I could see was darkness with red lights and hear the sound of hip hop booming. Immediately to the left, the womens bathroom. Which, when opened, was filled with strippers smoking cigarettes and spraying their crotch with deodorant. What's better than that? lol. Classy.

FOOD- I had the tacos al carbon which was excellent...the tortillas were authentic corn tortillas (not from Meijer or Kroger), the beef was well-prepared, the rice was good, the refried beans not so good...overall the food did the job. SERVICE- We decided to eat here a couple of hours before the Tiger's game...about half an hour after being seated (and several fly-bys by the waiter who assured us "he'd be right with us") we finally got our drinks, after pulling the manager to the side and asking her for them. Finally after waiting for our waiter, we ordered and got our food...over an hour and a half after walking through the front door! After finishing our meals we flagged the waiter down (my friend almost tackled him as he walked by our table) and asked him for the bill, split of course. What an ordeal that was! Our group was 9 people, one of which was a server at an established East Lansing restaurant. Our waiter told us that to split the bill would "take a long time" but he could do it if "we were willing to wait." We consented to waiting more, after all the first inning had already started and we had been in the restaurant over two and half hours at that point so what was another 5-10 minutes right? A disaster is what it was...after another 15 minutes, the manager got involved and she didnt know what the hell was going on either! She swiped my card, said the machine wasnt accepting it, and then proceeded to swipe it about five more time...I explained to her that the magnetic strip on the card had been malfunctioning and that I'd give her another card, but that we had to go and she couldn't keep trying with the first card...her response: "Well YOU asked to split the bill so YOU are going to have to be patient!" Needless to say I blew my lid and belittled her like nuns do to little heathen school boys. Overall just an ugly experience, which is unfortunate because the food was great.

When the "Great Blackout of 2003" happened, I drove home to Greektown and met my boyfriend at Loco. They were kind enough to let the patrons drink increasingly warmer beers all night until the candles ran out. For that they hold a special place in my heart. The margaritas are good and strong and decently priced but the food is just okay. I stop in for a drink but skip the food.

Having been here for lunch recently, I have to admit that I ended up liking this place despite my reluctance to eat here given that if you usually want good Mexican in the D, you go to Mexican Town. However, Loco was decent. The food wasn't horrible and the service was acceptable. I can see myself coming to this place after hitting the casino as a more likely scenario. If you're anywhere the Person Mover goes and don't feel like driving to Mexican Town (or are too drunk( and craving Mexican, then this is probably the place to hit.

Best thing about the Loco is there usually great service. Especially if you are going to a Red Wing or Detroit Lions game and looking for a bite to eat. I like the tamales the best but the taco salad is also good.

Just awful! How can you miss up a taco salad? They used lettuce from a salad bag, which took up 2/3 of the salad. Also the chips and salsa were disgusting. The chips were stale. Terrible. Just terrible. STAY AWAY!!

We've been coming here on and off for 13 years and been very happy. Service is fast, food is served hot and prices are reasonable. It's walking distance to Greektown, Ford Field and Comerica Park. Great stop before or after a game.

Awful service-avoid at all costs... Picture this: 6 diners come in @ 4 pm to join 3 friends who've already been there for a while. Table of 9, 3 hours before Tigers game should be able to eat before 6:45 right? No. The restaurant was NOT full, it was 40% capactiy, MAYBE. The waiters were running around like chickens w. their heads cut off. The person who appeared to be the mgr. had to be asked for water... after we'd been sitting for 25 minutes (imagine that... people drink water when they sit down)! The waiter took our drink order & then we waited another extended period of time for not-too complicated drinks. Then we waited forever for food. (The flautas were fine... the rest of the experience soured any good food review I could possibly give though) We asked for the bill when the food arrived & then, disaster set in. I won't say I know what every person at the table of 9 said, but I know it was something to the effect of splitting it 4 ways... which was apparently IMPOSSIBLE. 30 minutes later, I have to drag 2 males (law students... clearly not going to tear down the place or anything) in my party out of the restaurant for fear the unprofessional, ghetto from the 'hood manager was going to call the cops on them. Then, I calmly express to her our 3 hour ordeal, their poor service & the reason for their being upset... she tells me they need to calm down. She's trying to swipe the last card of our party (we've been paying for over 25 minutes). I almost deck her. I pay her in cash & walk out. I should have called the cops on them... but I had a game to get to. If I could go by again, & be a real ruckus, I would. But I limit my time in Detroit....

After the Wings game last night, we ventured into the Greektown area for a snack before heading home. Loco Bar and Grill was where we ended up. All in all, not a bad place. It's nowhere near authentic, but the food is decent and the service was rather good. We opted to eat at the bar (which made for nice people watching through the big windows at the front .) I was delighted to hear that they had $2 Sangria and $3 Margarita specials. I opted for the Margarita, and admittedly quite surprised at how good it was! The chips and salsa were nothing to get excited about, but the tamales and tacos were more than adequate. The fact that they're open late is another plus. The food prices seemed a little high for what it is, but the service made up for it. The liquor and beer selection is above average, and the place appeared to be pretty clean. The location is great, and I give kudos to them for being an independent business is a world where chains seem to be taking over.

If you haven't been here for Cinco de Mayo, you should try it next year! I went this year and got a giant sombrero! Love the margaritas and the "Mexican sandwich." The botana's are also pretty good. The reason for only three stars -- feels a bit dirty and is a bit expensive for what you get (Mexican is typically cheap, right?). Regardless, happy this piece of Mexico has found its way into Greektown!

I went last week for the first time, dined in, and had excellent service. It was taco Tuesday and not many people were there. HOWEVER, I went today for takeout service and it was awful. My coworker wanted the hot green salsa they served her last week and the bar staff told her she would have to pour hot sauce in the regular salsa. What mexican restaurant doesn't have multiple types of salsa? When my coworked explained that she wanted the salsa she was served last week, they yelled at her and walked away. Then the bar staff yelled at her that they would give her the tortilla chips anyway without paying for them after they made her pay for the guacamole and salsa. Just to top it all off they throught the change at us and told us to keep the tip. And didn't give me the coke I ordered. Unbelieveable. The food is pretty good but I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN.

We ate here after the hockey game last weekend with a group of people that attended the game - both in town and out of town. The place is spacious - plenty of room for big parties without bothering people around you. The service we had on Saturday evening was outstanding. Our server was attentive and provided good suggestions for the menu - we really appreciated her help and it made our dining experience great. She made sure that we always had full drinks, water, chips and salsa - as well as accommodating requests for extra napkins and silverware. The food here is OK. I've had much better Mexican food at other places - especially back home in Chicago. I had the chicken soft tacos with rice and beans and they were fine. The chicken itself was somewhat bland, but that's nothing a little bit of hot sauce can't fix. People were happy with their drinks and the service. So I'd say if you want good drinks, decent food (nothing spectacular), and good service Loco's is a pretty good place to go in Detroit.

My friends & I were at the Detroit Riverdays Festival. We decided to walk up to Greektown for food & drinks. Then we saw the "FUN BUS" that had Loco's & Niki's plastered all over it. So we jumped on and went to Loco's. We got a coupon for free nachos w/ an entree, so that fueled our motivation. It was about 7pm and the restaurant was not even close to being busy. We ordered a round of drinks & chips & salsa were delivered immediately. When the nachos arrived, I could not believe how much stuff was loaded on them. I couldn't even find the chips, so I used my fork. There was no shortage of chicken or cheese or anything else for that matter. I would've liked to be able to see & grab the chips, but I'm not complaining. I ordered chicken quesadillas. They were good, nothing spectacular. My husband ordered the mexican sandwich which is his favorite. It was the best he's had, but it was good. I couldn't tell you what my friends ordered as the margaritas and beer have deleted that from my memory. I'm pretty sure they were happy with their meals. I asked our server if they did anything for birthdays since it was my friend's birthday. A few minutes later, staff came over w/ a pineapple upside down cake & sang Happy Birthday to him. Overall, our server was really good & very attentive. I suppose I'd go back if I was in the mood for Mexican food while I'm in Greektown.

It's what I expected. I'll keep going back for lunch because that's all I use it for. Don't expect it to be southwest Detroit Mexican but it does the job for downtown. I have never had a bad experience here of any kind.

Let's start off with the good. The service was fast and friendly. The food however was pretty gross. My burrito and side of rice tasted like something I'd get out of a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner box. I ate half of it only because I was starving. Definitely more Tex than Mex at this place. No Bueno

Decent food, a little slightly on the high end price wise, spotty service- but doable if you're in the area and in the mood Mexican with a groups less than 8. 2.5 stars

This place isnt bad or good, its just average. The food is your standard fare Mexican that you would expect. They do also have several items that you would not find at a standard Mexican restaurant though. The service is good and the meals come fast, but expect to pay a few more dollars per meal here.

What's better than that? lol. Classy.

If you're in Greektown and craving Mexican than Loco Bar is the place to go. Simply, it's the only Mexican restaurant in Greektown. If you're going for authentic Mexican food, then you're going to be a bit disappointed. Now don't get me wrong, the food here is tasty, but if I'm going for Mexican, I'm going to Mexicantown. Loco Bar offers patrons a menu of traditional Mexican restaurant selections burritos, tacos, and so on and at reasonable price. The full bar is fantastic, with delicious margaritas and a pretty good selection of Mexican beers, Loco bar is a great place to grab a drink and a snack before or after a Detroit Tigers or Lion's game in a quaint, lively environment.

They are also willing and about to split the check without a fuss which is nice, because who carries cash anymore? I do want to point out that this is a Tex-Mex place, not an authentic Mexican restaurant. For that experience you'd be better off going somewhere in Mexicantown a few miles away.

The enchiladas blanca's is great here and their bandito wings with the lemon cilantro flavoring is amazing! My friend had the deep fried tacos and he enjoyed them. Fast service. Great margaritas. I have dinner here once every couple weeks with friends.

Horrible service. Drink never refilled once. Never once was asked if I wanted a box for my food. Order came out wrong and I didn't see my waitress once to have it fixed. Food was sub-par as well.

This place isnt bad or good, its just average. The food is your standard fare Mexican that you would expect. They do also have several items that you would not find at a standard Mexican restaurant though. The service is good and the meals come fast, but expect to pay a few more dollars per meal here.

The salsa is made fresh and is super delish! I love their food and dine her often. I don't understand the negative reviews either. The place could use some updating but the food is awesome.

We've been coming here on and off for 13 years and been very happy. Service is fast, food is served hot and prices are reasonable. It's walking distance to Greektown, Ford Field and Comerica Park. Great stop before or after a game.

  • Jacinta B.

    (3)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
