Decided to grab a drink and an app before going to game. Chicken strips and fries was all we ordered, took 30 min. Waitress admitted they lost ticket. Ok fine, then at least take it off the bill! We were the last ones still sitting at restaurant; everyone was long gone to game. Hey, I'm no stranger to the restaurant industry. Things go wrong. You forget to ring things in, or the kitchen forgets a ticket. Printer crashes at an inopportune moment and ticket never prints. But at least take care of your customer. Buy them a round since they're waiting so long. Or pick up their food. I mean what is the cost of chicken strips? Minimal.

We were waiting for a tigers game and decided to grab a bite. I had CBLT absolutely delicious. Service was slow but they were busy so it was expected. The price wasent that bad. I probably would go back if I lived in Detroit.

The only thing this place has going for it is its location. I realize it's a diner/sports bar, but there is no excuse for stale chips and cold nachos. They had clearly been sitting for quite a minute before they were brought to the table. I was completely unsatisfied, and the service wasn't good. I guess I'd go back for a drink, but probably not, considering the much better choices available downtown. Detroit "institution" or not, they need to be challenged to create some decent food. Unacceptable. Do not bring people here before the game.

Average fair. If you go... The monte cristo is a must! Great location right across the street from Ford Field and Comerica Park. Super busy during game time, service was slow but was expected for this location.

You have to stop in before or after the game. Fun place to meet and have a drink. Yes they have food, but i was in for a drink. Its right by ford field and Comerica. Good staff and nice pours. Pls stop in.

Horrible bar service; if there is a Lions or Tigers game u NEED more than two bartenders... And check the attitude .. We won't be back!!!!!!!!!

Best dive bar in Detroit. Limited food menu; just the good stuff though. Decent beer selection if you like the basics with a dmattering of microbrews. Overall, its an icon of the city

Great last minute stop for a beer and a burger before or after the Tigers (or Lions) game. Standard bar food.

Running late for the Tigers game, we decided to skip Small Plates (bummer) and head to the park for some eats... Someone suggested stopping in to Elwood, and to tell you the truth, I was starved so I didn't put up a fight. Happy I didn't actually. Although super busy when we entered, we were able to snag a couple of tables and clear them up to sit. Our server (Rita) took care of us pretty quickly. I thought we'd be waiting FOREVER for our food because of the crowd, and the fact that there were 6 of us...but not so...we had our food nice and quick.. I had the Monte Cristo delux. The sandwich was good....a little small, but I inhaled it. The coleslaw was too dry for my liking...I should've just ordered a side of fries, because the fries were great! Put a little malt vinegar, splash of hot sauce, and drizzle some ketchup and YUM!!! We escaped with only small dents to our wallets this time, so I have to say...Elwood was not a bad choice to get some grub on this particular Tuesday evening!

A classic diner w a really nice vibe. Burgers were decent and the service was good at moments and not so good at moments. Kind of weird but true. Super convenient if around ford field or comerica park.

Recently, some old work colleagues and I ate at the Elwood before a Tiger game. I had scouted out the menu in advance to ensure that there were veg options for me other than fries and beer. There were. I had a decent portabella mushroom burger with garlic aioli. I added the aforementioned fries (curly, slightly greasy but not bad) and coleslaw (average but I've had worse). I also noticed a black bean burger and several interesting non-veg items on the menu. Though its food is somewhat smarter than the average bar, it's location and atmosphere that make the Elwood shine. It is literally on a corner across the street from both Ford Field and Comerica Park (good trick). Before a ballgame, both the outdoor patio and indoor room buzz with conversation, clinking glasses and flatware on plates. I wish that I could give 3.5 stars to the Elwood. Its pretty OK food, great location and average service coalesce there. However, the game-day atmosphere tips the rating to 4 and, since that's when many will go there, that's where I'm going to leave it.

Close to the ball park? Open early for tailgating? Overpriced bottles of beer, just a little cheaper THAN the ball park? Yes please. :) The normal bar food list applies here. Greasy hamburgers, fries, sides such as Mac & Cheese and Wings are what you see everyone getting here. If you do go on game day, make sure to go early... there is never enough seating, and unless you want to be fighting with that drunk girl over a picnic table, you might as well save your energy by going early. To be honest, the history of the Elwood is one that is very cherished to any Detroit Tigers fan. They actually MOVED this place from where old Tiger Stadium was, and it now sits next to Ford Field and Comerica Park. Talk about doing anything for their customers. Or, loyal fans!

Just a short walk from the office and I don't know why I never go here. Well we'll get to that in a second. Went for a burger and fries today, burger was ok not the greatest but ok, would have been much better had the bun not been ice cold. The fries while tasty like Gary L stated were greasy and not crisp, some even undercooked. Hotter oil is needed. I'll give it another shot.

This pace is literally right next to Comerica Park and Ford Field. It's interesting, because you would expect it to be covered with sports stuff on the inside when really it isn't. It really has that Art Deco feel to it everywhere. It's a very unique place. I had a burger and it was excellent.

I have been here before. It was excellent food then. They use to have what they call "Frings" french fries & onion rings. We were told after the Tigers game on 5/6/12 that they don't have them any longer. The fries I received with my sandwich were greasy as hell!! All the sandwiches ordered were OK. Just OK. What happened to this place. They used to have the best food around. Now, not so good. Won't be going back anytime soon. Which is unfortunate since it is so early in the baseball season. Someone give me a call when the real Elwood comes back to town with a decent menu and great food that we all remember.

Had some tasty grub- the homemade soup was just what I was looking for! My wife and I split a sandwich, so nice amount of food for the value.

The best part of the Elwood is simply the location. Don't plan on eating here, as the food is not good. Great place to grab a cold can of Bud before a Tiger game though.

This bar is 50 yards from Ford Field and 50 yards from Comerica Park. So, i'm teling you, if you going to stop here for a 'pre lions/tigers' game drink you will be annoyed with the mass amount of people. It's packed with sports goers. Outside is prime real estate inside looks like old diner/bar type feel. Not too much stuff on the walls, nice big wood bar. There is history to the place where they actually MOVED the whole building from its old location to this super perfect location. Menu was adorable -- Ty Cobb Salad and other baseball themed items. And unique too .. Tilapia Fingers, Chicken Melt, and they have a burger bar part of the menu sorta a build your own. I got beers and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was awesome! Best for beer, food if you have time and be ready to feel a little claustrophobic (or get there early!)

Stopped in for our first "shuttle to the Red Wings" game experience. The place was PACKED when we got there, but the parking was very open. There was a college football game with Marshall in it just ending, but we walked in and got a table with absolutely no wait. The burgers were Extremely good, and the drinks weren't bad either. The people watching was fabulous. The only down side to the experience was that they ended up not validating my parking. That was a letdown, since their website clearly states under the Red Wings portion that they will (they said there is a clause about "not during stadium games", but it's not in the Red Wings area). In any event, it wasn't a bad experience. It can get a bit dark and empty on the return shuttle trip (the Elwood closed at 10:00 that night), and I would have liked to have a snack on our way out, but what can you do. I like the concept, now I guess I'll look at some of the other places offering the same service.

We went to The Elwood very hungry during a rain delay at Comerica Park, and it was absolutely PACKED. Personally, I think this added to the fun of it; It was chilly and wet outside and it was warm inside. I liked the camaraderie of Tiger fans. I also love the art deco interior--check out the history of this place; it's right on the menu. I had The Elwood burger, medium rare, with bleu cheese, and a side of the fringers (fries and onion rings). The first thing I tried was an onion ring and I wished I had just gotten an order of them--they were perfect. Not too greasy, perfectly crunchy, and great flavor. The burger was pretty incredible as well. The reason I am giving only three stars is for the drinks. The person with me ordered the Spanish coffee, and I had Oberon which was on tap. The coffee was basically old (as in not fresh) coffee with a little booze and a squirt of whipped cream in a paper cup for $9. My Oberon, which came in a plastic cup that was about 12 oz. or so (I guess I was expecting a pint), was $5. When ordering beer, I usually only order Oberon, especially when it's on tap, so I'm pretty familiar with how it should taste. This was indeed Oberon, but it literally made me gag as soon as I tasted it. Folks, the beer lines must have been really dirty because this was some of the funkiest, skunkiest beer I have ever tasted--and I've tasted beer from bad lines before. Not this bad, however. I would absolutely recommend The Elwood for the food. But, if I go again, I'm sticking with bottled beverages.

The Elwood is a really great place to check out because it happens to be a historic building in Detroit -- when you look at it, that's not replica Art Deco! It was designed and built in the 1930's and recently restored. This is a great spot for Detroit sports fans because it is near Comerica Park. I stopped in here once with a date to grab some beers during a Piston's playoff game (though this is more of a spot for Tigers fans) and remember really loving the interior. The food is mostly sandwiches and burgers, all between $5-$7. I had their hot dog and it was no joke -- total Angus beef yumminess.

The Elwood is in walking distance of my workplace, so it's a nice lunch spot when we want to venture out of the bldg. Nice menu -- burgers, salads, fries, onion rings, chicken wings, quesadillas, cole slaw. They used to have a killer mac & cheese. Unfortunately, it's no longer on the menu. It was hit or miss, though -- sometimes, it would be perfect, but on other occasions, it would be greasy and unappetizing. You can't go wrong with their other menu items, though. If it's not a game day, though, the place can be quite the ghost town. That's good for when I want to have a quick lunch and get back to work in time. But for someone who is looking for some hoppin atmosphere, it can be a bit of a buzzkill. That being said, the drink prices are a bit high. They do own glasses, but often serve their drinks in those flimsy solo cups. It's not a place I would visit on a planned bar night where I'm looking to have more than one drink. The Elwood has rich history that's explained on their menu. It's an interesting read. Bonus: They have a nice patio with picnic tables and umbrellas!

We stopped by Elwood before the Tiger's game. This place really packs them in. We were lucky enough to get a picnic table out front. Service was fast and friend. BJ got a burger and I got a club sandwich. Mine was turkey, ham, bacon, cheddar an cibatta bread with wasabi aoli. My sandwich was so good. Great place to people watch. Also, we shared out table with a couple of locals. Fun visit!

This is a great place to check out because of the authentic 1930's Art Deco design, but it's too costly to make it a regular stop. For the locals, there are plenty of other places offering the same food at a better price. On game days (Tigers), they offer only a limited selection, a "game day menu." If you're going there on any day though, plan to spend $9 to $12 for a salad and $10 for a sandwich. The chili from here is really good though, and a good bargain as you can get a bowl for under $5.

Solid burgers! Great atmosphere!! Best place to hang out before or after a game!!!

My rating is pretty much centered on the experience, not the food. The food was pretty good, but we just had basic sandwiches and fries. This place is tiny. It's right in the shadow of the stadiums, so it's good for adults that are willing to stand in a huge line before or after the game. I don't think it's a good place to sit and enjoy a meal when it's a game day. You feel so rushed because of the line, it's almost uncomfortable. I walked in with my son after a Tiger game. It was packed, but there is no one working the door, just one girl behind the bar. I wasn't sure if we just grab the first seat, if it was "ok" for us to sit at the bar with a kid...etc. I'm sure it was obvious that we had never been there before and weren't sure what to do. You would think that being located near the parks that the staff would be used to seeing non-regulars that needed a little guidance. We were pretty much left to figure it out, which we did. Like I said, with a crowd at the door, I felt as if everyone was staring us down while we ate. I would go back for drinks when they have the patio open outside, but wouldn't fight the crowd again for just ok food.

I have been here a few times now. This is a nice option for a Tiger's pre-game meal. The have a nice selection of burgers, sandwiches and salads as well as a pretty good beer selection. They have a patio and they are adjacent to the Comerica Park ticket windows. I have had salads and burgers - all very delicious. They have a basic fare of cobb salads, bleu burgers, chicken BLTs, tuna melts, patty melts and the like. The good news is that you will pay less for a meal here than you will at Hard Rock or Hockeytown and you will enjoy what you eat. They lost one star because the avacado in my salad tasted way too lemony (soaked in lemon juice).

Good bar food, perfectly located. We were at Ford Field for HS football finals so the place was pretty full but not packed. I don't think I'd go on a Lions game day; the place is not that large so I would guess getting a table would be tough. I'd like to hit the patio before a Tigers game sometime. The food was pretty good-standard bar food. My wife declared her portabella burger to be pretty good, if a bit too messy. Daughters chicken sandwich was also good-she declared it excellent, but then again, she's a teenager. My Cuban was good, if not really a Cuban. Fries are good-nice to be near Canada and have vinegar on the table. My biggest beef was the thin plastic cups that held our drinks. What, no red Solo cups available? They were thin and flimsy and easily spilled. Get some real glasses. Other than that it was OK-better than ballpark food, and it beats paying ballpark prices.

I want it on the record that last night here I had the worst Philly cheese steak sandwich of my life, and I've eaten them all over, including in Philly. I thought I'd be sick for an hour afterwards. The meat might as well have been thin-sliced from a local dog, had no taste, felt uncooked, and the cheese had the consistency and weight of tissue paper. The bread was like cotton. (The burgers my friends ate had roughly 3 times the meat for the same price - different meat as well - and tasted normal.)

If you are like me and you get tired of sitting at a Tigers game, definitely skip a few innings and walk across the street to Elwood. Of course, you can't get away from the game because the many televisions will be tuned in, however at least you can get some air conditioning and great food. I'm a fan of juicy burgers and fries any day, but they also have a few other sandwich selections that make good on a hot day. The prices are super reasonable (and actually much cheaper than eating in the stadium). There is no missing this place because tons of people are on the patio during the day.
