Certainly better than the chain version. I agree with the reviewers who report the ambiance is part of the experience. For those who care, did not see anything or anyone remotely Dutch... Cake donut was especially good. Not too greasy. Should have not listened to my sweetie and bought a whole dozen. Six is not enough.

I won't even waste time explaining why I'm giving Dutch Girl a 5 star rating. Just get in your car and go there and buy some donuts.

Dutch Girl Donuts is a legend in Motown. Single customers have been feasting on their baked goods for 50+ years-recalling when grandma would take them as a young kid. This kind of loyalty has to say something about the quality of products Dutch Girl is baking up. Located on Woodward Avenue, just before 7 mile Dutch Girl Donuts, open 24/6(they're closed Sunday) makes some of the best donuts in the world. And none of those silly flavors like rainbow sprinkle. Dutch Girl cranks out classics 24 hours a day, flavors like maple, raisin and crumb for example. The donuts are consistently light and fluffy and the cinnamon rolls melt in your mouth. All the decadently delicious bake goods are priced reasonably. One more than one occasion I have heard stories about how people have moved to Atlanta or else where in the U.S. and had friends and family ship them donuts from Dutch Girl. Need I say more?

I do enjoy donuts from time to time and thought since Dutch Girl had such great reviews, I would give it a try. I did find the place with ease, thanks to another yelpers directions. (On Woodward and 7 mile road)....I went at 8am on a Saturday morning. I was disappointed because they only had 3 different types of donuts available. So I bought the plain cake donut w/chocolate frosting and a glazed donut. I also got some coffee. I actually like the coffee. The plain cake donut was freshly made and kinda warm still. My next donut I only bought because Janelle W refers to it as an addicts drug. THE GLAZED DONUT. I thought about her review and I do love fresh, warm glazed donuts. As I grabbed it out of the bag, as I was driving, my mouth was watering. The smell was incredible; nevertheless, the next thing I know, Puterbaugh (my black lab) has his mouth completely on my hand, which held the donut. As I drove down Woodward, I grasped the donut tighter, but then Puterbaugh bit down harder. HE WON :(........... So needless to say I will have to go back and give another review about this mystery glazed donut. Puterbaugh seemed to love it, but then he eats just about anything. LOL This place is not a sit down type donut shop. You walk in and walk out. It is cash only. I will be back but without Puterbaugh. haha

They were ok. It was late and they were out of almost everything...so I will try them again. I heard they were GOOD, so I gotta give um another chance.

These are excellent donuts! I have had at least 10 different flavor, and all were tasty. My only "complaint" would be that they don't always have a ton of selection, depending on when you go in. If you are looking for a real donut, this is your destination.

  • Matthew A.

Amazing donuts! By far, the best in Metro Detroit. You must get them freshly made. They melt in your mouth. The plain glazed and raisin are wonderful.

  • Bryan V.

I do enjoy these donuts quite a bit. I am a fan of the cinnamon rolls, and I appreciate that they aren't as big as my face like other places. It makes them easier to eat when you have a beard. The crullers also melt in your mouth, light, fluffy. Just had a friend in from out of town and made sure we stopped here. I just picked up a mixed dozen to take to work in the A.M. too.

there is nothing to say other than FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure to call ahead though, they say 24 hours, but I have found that it is not always true. Many a late night snack has been ruined because they were closed.

  • Dennis S.

this is the best donut shop in michigan. i have been eating their donuts for over 50 years, anytime i have given their donuts to anyone they have thought they are the best of the best. hope it stays with the original owners and their family for another 59 years.......

  • Kim G.

The best donuts in town, don't be put off by the location (or folks hanging around the shop). A must try for locals and visitors alike.

Love their glazed donuts!! This place is a staple in Detroit! They are cash only and so worth it!

I've had this place bookmarked on Yelp since 2013... I just never found myself in the area to stop in. I finally found a chance and was eager to try it. This is a hole-in-the-wall. It's a no-frills, bulletproof glass, hurry-up-and-order type place. I definitely didn't feel welcomed... no greeting or anything, just a brisk "NEXT!" telling me that I better hurry up and order. I told them this was my first visit twice. I just gave up on niceties (and the idea of browsing their selection) and asked for what I knew: two cruellers and a cinnamon roll. Our total was less than $3. Cash only. I slid it through the window and in return, I was granted a white bag filled with delicious confections. Jacob and I ran back to my car to try them. They're damn good donuts. Definitely smaller than what I'm used to from other places, but delicious nonetheless. Dutch Girl is an institution for a reason. Their donuts are awesome. Definitely stop in for a taste sometime, but beware you may not get the warm-and-fuzzies from the ladies behind the counter.

I will be honest: I'm not generally a doughnut fan. With a few exceptions, I don't have much trouble resisting them. But, the reviews for this place were so outstanding that I decided to head there after work to see what the fuss is about. Now granted, I decided to go on National Doughnut Day, so maybe they didn't have as many choices as they usually do. I asked if they had peanut & the woman said they were sold out & only had what I saw. I don't like filled doughnuts, so that left me with glazed. I chose 3 that I thought were different. Alas, when I got them home and tried them, I found that all that was different was the shapes. One was traditional round, one was kind of S-shaped, and one was what I thought was a cinnamon roll. But, there was no cinnamon in it. They were exactly the same. These are not bad doughnuts, and they are certainly better than the chain places. But they cannot compare to Cops and Doughnuts in Clare, MI or the absolutely outstanding doughnuts I found at the Rise n' Roll Bakery when I was in Shipshewanna, IN. I would say that if you're passing by and have a hankering for doughnuts, they're worth a stop, but they are not worth going too far out of your way for them. The one thing that I really did like was the friendliness of the woman who served me And, she actually counted back my change -- a very rare thing these days.

Dutch Girl's Donut Shop is a beautiful hidden gem located right at the intersection of Woodward Avenue right as you approach six mile. Me and one of my really good friends were in the mood for some sweet "nuts" and decided stop on by. I actually lived in the Palmer Woods neighborhood for two years and this place was a regular stop after a night of hard drinking and partying. Dutch Girls has been a main stay in Detroit for years. They have a very nice selection of donuts and the staff is very friendly. I'm not quite sure of their hours of operation. I thought they were open 24 hrs, but I don't think that is the case. These are the best Donuts I've ever eaten. Once you bite into one, sometime becomes quite apparent, these donuts will please your sweet spot, or "honey hole" just the way you like. Stop by here when in the neighborhood, you wont be disappointed.

  • Varun B.

Very unimpressed with this place, given the number of better doughnut shops around town. I've been here a total of 3 times now, and what I've found each time was that their doughnuts look nice from the outside, and they have this crisp outside, but there's barely any "doughnut" on the inside, unless I'm sure you get a filled or cake doughnut. The other criticism is that their doughnuts are just way too sweet. I was not a fan of that part in particular. While the doughnut is $0.75 per, I don't think I'll ever return here for more.

    (2)
  • Lauren L.

When I first got there the only thing that I thought was "oh, they are small!", but once I ate one I realized why. They are way too sweet for my taste and a small doughnut was all I could handle. Everybody at my work loves these doughnuts, so I will stop by and pick them up every once in a while, but I just have to prepare to not eat anything sugary for the rest of the day!

  • Mark N.

There are few places in the city that are open 24 hours, that is especially true for a family-owned business like this. Dutch Girl has a small menu, just a handful of selections and they do all of them well. Just donuts, cookies, and a few drinks. Cash only and, last time I checked, nothing gluten-free. The donuts are always fresh, usually made within the last hour or two. Its great to see a guy just behind the window rolling the dough and putting them in the fryer.

  • Daniel D.

Tried this place because it was #5 on the Michigan top donuts list. Should be higher! Nothing fancy in the way of store front or even the donuts themselves, but the donuts are of the highest quality. I tried the glazed donut, the blueberry cake, and the cream-filled chocolate. These are all basic donuts, but executed so well that it doesn't require any crazy toppings or elaborate techniques. The only complaint is the donuts are a little small, so you are wanting more! I will be stopping by whenever I am in the D.

    (5)
  • Tallbrowngiraffe B.

At 75 cents a donut for the quality of a donut is crazy. My favorite was the raisin. If I lived in Detroit,I would be their almost daily just for the raisin donut!!!

    (5)
  • Dion T.

First visit was excellent! As others have said, it's a small shop, nothing fancy, but who cares - the donuts are fantastic. We had glazed, blueberry, chocolate covered, nutty, and I think strawberry glazed, and every single one was delicious. While we waited, the clerk gave us a glazed donut to eat that was fresh from the oven....good lord that was wonderful. Look....whatever the hell is wrong with America, or the Ukraine, or ISIS - Dutch Girl fixes all that. You're gonna bite into this donut and love the world for a second.

Can I call Dutch Girl Donuts one of Detroit's hidden gems even though it's on Woodward which is Detroit's Main Street? I'm going to since it's on a stretch of Woodward lots of people (suburbanites) are busy avoiding by driving on I-75. I myself took a very long time to finally pop in as I hadn't been a regular purchaser of donuts for many years. Plus, I usually passed by it in the wee hours when things were shut down. And when I did go by at decent hours I always thought "Some other time". I always thought it looked charming though. I was right. It's about the most charming business with bulletproof glass I think I've ever been in. It's cozy, too, maybe a bit too cozy in the customer side, but somehow, I've never seen a line out the door. They don't look too Dutch and you might even find a dude mixed in with the girls, but the folks there have the good vibeyness you'd expect from a place that sells happiness in edible form. The donuts are really good, too. I'm not sure if there's such a thing as gourmet donuts or what the difference between really good and great donuts is, but I know I've had lousy donuts, mediocre donuts and good donuts, and these are really fucking good donuts! And I say that never having eating a still piping hot newborn one there. Maybe one day I'll get lucky. Their coffee hits the spot, too. They've got a few different kinds of donuts, maybe about a dozen or so, and a dozen costs 8 bucks. Lately, I've been picking them up for a group known to be connoisseurs of donuts and they've been a big hit. I'm so glad Dutch Girl Donuts has changed from a spot I always meant to check out to one that's regularly in the mix. Maybe on Thursday I'll ask when I should get there to have the best odds for a piping hot one.

If you like donuts (and who doesn't like donuts), Dutch Girl is an absolute must-stop. I love cake donuts, and Dutch Girl does 'em right. It'd be easy to drive by for years, and never really realize that delicious donuts were right under your nose, but the next time you are on the north end of Woodward, keep your eyes peeled for this humble donut shop.

    (5)
  • Evan B.

Still the best donut shop in the whole world. Sometimes you just need the old school to remind you that not everything needs to be fancy and filled with gross bacon strips. Love you Dutch Girl until I die!!

    (5)
  • Jess P.

Their crullers are to die for. Can doughnuts get any better than these guys? Plus, they're open 24/6. **in love**

  • W. I.

My mother used to stop in at Dutch Girl only when her Japanese friend "Rita" was working. We had no idea that Dutch Girl was that good or would even be around after all these years. Back then, everything was open....no bullet proof glass, etc. I don't get around to the area much....but I know and trust that the taste of the doughnuts has not changed They were known for their glazed doughnuts, but seems they have added a few more to their lineup. Carry on, carry on! One of the best tasting doughnuts in the metro Detroit area.

  • Ana K.

Dutch Girl Donuts make me go nuts! Yummmmmmm! It's not in the nicest area of Detroit, but it's worth the trip! They're priced well and the service is always great. I've taken my friends there and they loved it as well. And they have drinks for sale.

Ok, first understand, I'm from CA where we have donuts that are OUT OF THIS WORLD delicous and also those that win awards for crazy creative. (I'm looking at you Sidecar Donuts and DK donuts) I mean, Michiganders freak out over seeing a maple bar w/ a strip of bacon on it. I'm like, "um, normal?!?" My search continues for the perfect GLAZED OLD FASHIONED donut. I mean, the kind where its saucer shaped like a pentagon so you can break off a slice and enjoy bite by bite savoring each sweet glazed morsel. Of course, these are slightly smaller than the diameter of a CD. ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ) However, Michiganders don't play that. Your glazed old fashioned doesn't have those flying saucer rings. Why? Oh well, at least make a good donut. Tim Hortons, Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, no way. Dutch Girl Donuts succeeds in making a glazed donut; albeit, smaller in size. Everytime I go, I need to eat 2.5 donuts to = 1 donut in CA. I mean, when you have those saucer shaped and you can break off a piece, I savor. When I eat DGD, I eat slower, but my craving isn't satiated until after almost 3 donuts. And don't worry, its like $0.75 ea. I love that it's 24 hrs Mon-Fri and you order behind a bullet proof glass. It's owned by the same white family since 1947 but run by mostly black people. Am I getting racial. No, no, no. Just my observation. Most donut shops in CA are stereotypically run by Asians (the Cambodian, Filipino or Hmong type) and its a family business (kids work there after school). Not sure why that its, it just is! Ain't nothing wrong w/ that, just gotta make a livin'! Anyhow, there's all kinds of donuts here except for the aforementioned exotics like Cronuts, doughssants, bacon topped, oreo filling, reese's pieces-inspired, fluffernutter filled, vegan, or potato flour donuts. No cream puffs here either. That's ok. They do what has made them successful w/ their doughy and soft yeast and cake donuts. Their glazes aren't too sweet like the donut chains (Krispy Kreme) and they were the first to introduce me to the raisin donut and bars. They're open Saturday until they sell out around 6p and closed Sunday's. And is it ghetto surrounding their shop, hell yeah! But do I give a sh*t? No, I'm a 4'11" petite chic and have walked in at 2:45am when I get off work from the ER w/o any qualms. Just be aware of your surroundings. These ladies behind the counter are SUPER NICE and sweet and blush when you take their photo! They've also included a few donut holes for me for free! My search continues for exotic donuts as well as old fashioned donuts. When I can't get to DGD, I go to Donut Cutter!

For a while I had driven by this place and thought that it wasn't actually in business. Maybe it's the area (not very pretty section between 7-8 mile on Woodward) but once I found out it was actually operational and had great reviews I made a stop. Yes, it does have bullet-proof glass and it is definitely no-frills. The donuts are pretty standard choices- you won't find any crazy new flavors here. BUT...they have perfected what they do make. The sour cream donuts are my favorite. I've brought them to several family functions and they're always a hit. The service is always friendly and it's nice that they're open late. Beware-they are not open on Sundays.

  • Samantha D.

Dutch Girl Donuts is a very tiny store in a not-so-nice area, but their pastries are super fresh (you can see them making their donuts from scratch in the back...behind the bullet-proof glass) and delicious!

    (4)
  • Jonathan P.

You know that feeling you get when you go to the cider mill and bite into those fresh doughnuts. That's perfection. This little doughnut shop offers that feeling all year long. I've probably gained roughly 5 pounds because this place is within a few miles of my house. I recommend the blueberry circle doughnut, which is my favorite.

    (5)
  • Nunya B.

This place is the absolute WORST. The doughnuts are fresh, light, and sweet. How am I supposed to fit into my bikini by June?!? Places like this make me wonder how in the holy places like Krispy Kreme last as long as they do. I've literally been to this place every day straight for the last four days, and YES... I'll be there tomorrow. I've had the twists, the raisin buns, the chocolate iced crullers, the glazed crullers, the unglazed blueberry as well as the glazed blueberry... PLEASE, help me find something WRONG with these donuts!

What a donut! Hot & fresh! Always friendly , kind staff smiling to give assistance! Always fresh! Amazing!!!! Love these! Every donut is terrific !

Like Juston M., I too have passed Dutch Girl Donuts a million times and just chalked it up to being just another donut shop. However, my brothers and sisters on Yelp have helped me see the error of my ways. My wife and I were craving a late night sweet. Should we go to McD's and get milkshakes? Hell no! I made a motion for Dutch Girl Donuts and the motion was seconded. The motion carried and off I went at 12:15 at night because five days a week, they are open 24/7. Shorter hours on Saturday and closed Sunday. Hurray! A donut shop that actually makes their own donuts and are made right in front of you. No conveyor belts and no digital machinery just people hard at work, individually flipping donuts over in the grease by hand. Old school. They typically make smaller batches to ensure freshness. And fresh they are. The yeast donuts (similar to a crispy creme) were soft and chewy as the friendly young lady who helped me pulled them right from the glazing rack. I also tried some of the donut sticks which are cake donuts. Moist, soft and not too dense. They had both yellow cake and chocolate cake options with several flavored glazes. I opted for a dozen ($7.00) mixed that included the cinnamon rolls, raisin buns, classic glazed, double chocolate sticks, raspberry filled jellies and the yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Donuts are on the smaller size but they like to refer to them as being "more manageable." My donut management last night was just fine. I'll be back again to try the dozen other varieties they had. 66 years in business. Service was friendly and wonderful. Bring some cash because they DO NOT take cards. Enjoy this this little Detroit treasure.

This is hands down my favorite place to get doughnuts from! Also the prices are reasonable! Do yourself a favor and try this bakery out, you won't regret it.

  • Yohance I.

I love this place I have never had a bad donut from here. Everyone in my family has their favorite. Mine is the glazed stick and twist. I did try the red velvet holes the other day and they were pretty yummy too but I am a sucker for my faves.

  • Allison C.

Dutch girl doughnuts is undoubtably the best doughnut shop in the whole world the doughnuts are hot, soft and melt in you mouth. Literally nothing better! Be prepared for the surround area (not the best) but the doughnuts are worth the trip.. Always!

  • Dwayne W.

This place is the absolute best place in the D, no the world, to get donuts! This local gem is easy to pass by if your driving along Woodward Ave but I promise if you stop by and grab a few donuts you'll never forget this place. It's full of different various donuts all cooked fresh everyday....That's right this aint Dunkin, which are frozen then baked. The prices are outrageously reasonable. My fav is the raisin donut. Now that may sound weird to you but I'm telling you it's really that good. Go check em' out!

  • Julia K.

There's nothing to be said that hadn't already been said about this place: the donuts are just incredible. Everything is made right there in the shop and it's open 24/7 except for Sunday, I believe. It's definitely in a seedy area and you order through bulletproof glass, but it's more than worth it. The glazed blueberry cake donuts are at the top of my list as well as the maple crullers. Easily the best donuts I've ever had.

  • Michele A.

Well you may think that getting 5 stars is easy because it is donuts and who hates a donut? Not true there are some pretty nasty donuts out there dry hard gross. This place is amazing they really knocked making donuts out of the park. I have gone here at all times in the day and once in a while I get there while they are making hot fresh ones. There is no way you can leave here with less than a dozen donuts they are just that good. The donuts are soft and fluffy while the frosting is not just sugar rocks its creamy. The people are always friendly and do not rush you when picking your favorite since there are just to many good ones.

Uh-oh, our little Dutch Girl has taken a long, hard fall from the top of the hill waaay down to the very bottom and cracked her head. Okay, okay, so I'm mixing up my nursery rhymes here. This place has been my husband's favorite donut shop for many many years, and he'll drive miles out of his way just to pick up a bag of donuts whenever he gets the urge. I liked them okay but I'm more of a Krispy Kreme fan, I love their hot glazed donuts. Still, I could see the appeal, we really liked the ladies that worked there in addition to the atmosphere in general. But I digress. My hubby stopped by there in the middle of the day today and got 1/2 dozen nutty and 1/2 dozen glazed donuts to go. He didn't eat any until he got home unfortunately or he might have been able to give them back because they were HORRIBLE!! I tried a glazed just to be polite and it tasted like it had been sitting around in a smoky bar for a day. Is that a new flavor? Old cigarette smoke? Ugh. Then he said that his nutty donuts were really STALE. WTF Dutch Girl? I would've taken them back but he never does that, he just threw them out. Soo disappointed, it's a shame to see a Detroit Icon fall so far.

Delicious, always fresh donuts, and very forgiving hours. Why bother with fast food chain donuts, when you could have THESE? Ignore all the crybabies re: the neighborhood and just get a donut. You'll be happy you did.

    (5)
  • Nijole T.

These donuts are really that great, I didn't expect the place to look like this, it was a bit of an adventure. Scuzzy area, the bar wired doors are dirty as hell and there are chicken feathers everywhere?!! Don't get it. Two ladies behind bullet proof glass and two huge cases loaded with donuts. I got a dozen mixed and all of them were fresh, fluffy and super tasty. Cheap too, and the ladies working were nice, sometimes the best things are found in the ghetto and worth the trip.

    (4)
  • Mark Y.

When it comes to old school, simple doughnuts, Dutch Girl makes their products to perfection. If you get there earlier in the day, you can't beat a glazed doughnut fresh out of the fryer. Warm and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. And get yourself some doughnut holes as well. They're melt in your mouth good! The ladies working the shop are super friendly and always patient with me. Choosing which doughnuts to get for me is almost as stressful as car shopping - the end result is much more satisfying though! And sure, the neighborhood isn't the best but that, along with the bulletproof glass just add to the character of Dutch Girl!

Tried to go again last week and found that they are closed on Sundays :( Just had them again yesterday, and they were open! 24/7, except they close early on Saturday and all day Sunday. I am trying to find a way of describing them that isn't pedantic foodie, but Dutch Girl is a jewel of an old school donut place. We got there around around 11pm/Midnight and it was warm and donut-y inside. A full sheet tray's worth had just been glazed and were dripping away. I ordered a boston, a glazed and a cruller. The cruller is a tricky donut, because I always want to love it in concept, but I always hate them for being stale, and sugary or that gross stale sugar combination. Theirs were light and airy, the chocolate frosting was simple and made sense. Fun new thing learned: a little old Japanese lady (who stayed in Detroit even after the 60s) either is the master "baker" or owner. She's a tough broad, but the craftsmen ship of their donuts makes more sense now. Quite close to Ferndale, just north of Palmer Woods. 24/7 except closed early on Saturday, and closed all day Sunday.

  • Daria D.

I've had a lot of donuts in my time, and these are the best I've ever had. I've been coming to this place since I was a little kid and nothing has changed. The strawberry jelly filled is crazy good. This place is closed Sunday, but it 24 hours every other day, though sometimes the area can be kind of sketchy at night. It's cash only but that's expected of a place that's been around so long! Try it!

  • James D.

listen up, bucko, i'm about to hit you with some truth. dutch girl is detroit's best donut. blueberry cake? please. glazed? sure i'll take 3. bottom line is i could easily eat 4 donuts from here after a meal and only spend like $3. while being open 24 hrs and being so close to ferndale and royal oak this place is the perfect dessert location for me

  • Liz W.

Believe the damn hype. These are some crackity crack crack crack. Especially when you get them hot and fresh and swig some milk to wash them down with. It was not ideal for my blood sugar but I have surmised nothing truly tasty ever is. From the heavenly original glazed to the cream filled to the delightful cake varietals every single thing I tried in here was evillicious. Truly just amazing. Some of the best I have had outside of the K-zoo mini chain Sweetwater Donut Mill, and that is just saying something. To be a close #2 to that place in my book is a feat to a WMU alum like myself. I mean anyone can fry dough add sugar and make it tasty, hello. These donuts though have really good flavors, they are not just all mere sugar and fat. They are fresh and warm, have the right crunch to moist density ratio and oh hell they are just delightful. I do not have enough words to describe the explosion of happiness in my mouth, and god knows I love explosions of happiness in my mouth. Go there. Try some. Return. Enjoy more. Die of happiness. Oh and James says the cinnamon rolls are amazing. Sigh.

Off on the east side of Woodward and tucked on the corner at Brentwood, if you blink you'll miss it. The blue and white Dutch Girl awning is the first sign of something tasty followed by the aroma of yeast and sugar. Like Liz said, these are pure crack! I've only had the glazed and it was later in the day when the donuts were past their prime but they were still exceptional. I'm going back for the morning's fresh batch, these were some damn good donuts.

They make the best donuts in town even better than the ones I had in NYC and Chicago. Extremely friendly staff!

  • Nickie P.

Even twenty years after moving away from this neighborhood, my grandfather made the trip down to Dutch Girl every weekend to bring us back a box of donuts. They have a large selection of donuts, but really, the classic glazed is all you will ever need in life -- they are so frickin' good there! It's still delicious after all these years, still affordable, and will always be my favorite donut place in town!

  • Colleen G.

I only give this place 3 stars because I want to support a business that is in Detroit. The donuts are OK- when I went with my mother it looked like they were sitting for a bit, but we went at 1:30 p.m. which isn't prime donut time. Obviously they are doing something right if they have been open since dinosaurs roamed the D. Check it out, but go during the day. Looks like it could be a little bit of a rough neighborhood at night.

Only the best donut place in Detroit! A word of caution.... I gained a couple pounds taking these to work every week for like a month straight last year. Lol. They are the best if you're going late night and they've made a fresh hot batch!

Yes, yes yes. These are amazing donuts and maybe the best donuts in Detroit. They are pretty much open all the time which makes them great for after bar food. You do have to watch out for the hookers that are near the location. So I guess that could be a positive or negative depending on your position on hookers.

Oh my gosh! Dutch Girl Donuts is a dREAM! I can't believe I'm saying this but they are better, or almost better, than Krispy Kreme. That good. I bought 3 donuts and finished them... well soon after I bought them. They have a wide variety of donuts including my favorites, old fashion & glazed. I also had the Boston Creme, which was also fantabulous! Unfortunately they do not name all the donuts but they're the standards so if you indulge in donuts every now and again you should recognize most of them. As I write this I want to go get some!!! Anyways, they're open 24 hours most of the time. But they close when they run out on Saturday Night (around 8pm apparently), and open on Sunday night (Monday technically) around 2:30 am. The workers are friendly if you talk to them, but can come across as curt if you don't really take the time to converse with them. The little Japanese woman who's in the kitchen has been working there since 1961!!!

As I type this I'm also dusting off bits of cinnamon and powdered sugar off my shirt. Yep, I might have been munching on a few of these donuts right before starting this review. But what better time, right? When the flavors are still kicking around in my mouth. I bought a box of these last night and tore into them into the car. I know the saying "melts in your mouth" gets a little overdone but eff it--these donuts really do melt in your mouth! I had a plain glazed and it was so soft and luscious. I might have followed it up with chocolate frosted vanilla creme and it was so sugary sweet and delicious. My favorite kind of vanilla creme filling--so white that it's seems like it's not made from anything found in nature and that's all right by me. Tasty tasty! The staff wasn't exactly the most pleasant but I was in there for a total of maybe 5 minutes tops so it wasn't too bad. The only thing I would recommend would be labeling the donuts. I think their annoyance came from me asking what everything was filled with but I had no way of knowing otherwise. A box of a dozen for $6.50--what a steal! Although FYI--Cash only. Today I enjoyed on the cinnamon and sugar and a glazed cruller. They weren't quite as magnificent as they were when they were fresh but they still hold up pretty darn well. Excited to visit and get some fresh ones again real soon!

Where to start? The accessibility? Open 24 hours. The freshness? Open 24 hours. The sweet sweet goodness? Handmade with AWESOMENESS! This is the BEST donut shop in Metro Detroit. If someone knows of a best place, please enlighten me but i doubt you'll be able to. The staff is sooo friendly and nice. Wonderful people. The donuts are always fresh and delicious. Butter soft. Mmm. I went once at midnight and they were just making the donuts. I was able to watch the whole process as the walls are see thru (glass\plex-glass). The smell was magnificent. So much in that i recorded a video of it (not the smell...lol). I don't get a chance to go often but when i do i make sure to get enough. I love the donut holes and I normally get a box of 36. Unlike the donut chains, the environment here is warm and intimate. Nothing like shopping indie. If you haven't been yet make sure you go in 2013. Enjoy.

I have had Dutch Girl twice when they make their way into the office, and they rock! I love glazed donuts, don't have them often but when I do it's a huge treat. Man how I LOVE DG...they melt in your mouth and leave you speechless. Definitely a must try.

Krispy Who? Dunkin What? The best donuts in the WOOOORLD are on Woodward and 7 Mile. I don't even like donuts, but I LLLLLOOOOVVVEE Dutch Girl. Go at 2 am to catch the donut holes fresh out of the fryer with the icing soaking into the buttery balls of delight. Or try the raisin ones, which are so addictive they should be illegal. Plus the street theater is unbeatable--drop by late night and see what I mean. I've never gone there without walking out crying with laughter. More than worth the price of admission.

I can't say anything most other reviewers haven't already said. This place makes the best donuts and paczki I have ever eaten. No more having to deal with Hamtramck for me. Prices are durned reasonable too. Just make sure you bring cash. This place does have a line on Fat Tuesday but it isn't too terrible depending on the time of day and they make em fresh all day long.

No perfectly formed Tim Horton's/Kripsy Kreme/Dunkin'Donuts here!!! Oh no - these donuts are fresh, hand-made, a little bit malformed, just like real donuts should be. The flavor and texture of each type of donut is exceptional. It's so nice to bite into a jelly donut and get a burst of jelly - not doughy air. The crullers are heavenly. The fritters are to die for! Oh how I wish I lived closer - but my belly shows that it's a good thing I do not. One tip: watch out for riff raff when you park. And do let the worker know if anyone is panhandling outside; they will be shooed away with a broom.

dutch girl deliciousness i have driven past dutch girl a million times since moving to ferndale 4 years ago. for some ungodly reason, i just stopped by yesterday for my first donut. these are the best donuts i have ever had. the creuller is light, filled with air and covered with caramel or vanilla. the sour cream donuts (my bf's fave) are sugary and dense. best part of the donuts was the absence of that waxy, weird coating you get when eating, say a dunkin donut. these were just little pillows of sugary delite. the price is right. 4 bucks for a 1/2 dozen. the ladies inside were nice, fast and friendly. the actual shop was behind bullet proof glass. i have never seen a cleaner work area. this place is spotless. this is hands down detroit's best donut. don't be a dummy like me and wait. bring cash and come early. love, juston

I just ate the best donut of my life. The caramel topped cruller melted into my mouth too quickly. Before I knew it, it was gone. The freshness and light texture of the donut did not sit in my stomach like other donuts. I could have eaten a dozen. The ambience of the place was also to be appreciated. The cash only operation is contained in bullet proof glass and is not located in the best area of town. The bakery portion is visable through the glass and everything looks to be made from scratch. The only 'dutch' item in sight was a ceramic windmill on a shelf.

I love Dutch Girl Donuts. I mean, for real, they blow the chain donut shops (yes, even Krispy Creme) out of the water. My husband first introduced me to them. He'd been going for years since he grew up in the immediate area (which is a little rough, but you'll be ok). After I had my first taste, I was addicted. I think they might put some magic dust to keep people like me coming back....or addicted. If I had no self control, I'd be 215 lbs. by now. I always love their holes. They are fresh ALL of the time, and moist ALL of the time. I have had every type, and they are all delicious. They even taste good after they've sat for 12 hours, then frozen in sandwich bags, thawed, and heated for 5-10 seconds in the microwave. I am saying all of this, and I'm not even really a donut lover (but more of a cookie, brownie, and cupcake lover). When I went, the lady working was very nice and cordial. She even gave me an extra dozen holes for my two little kids. (They probably had been siting for a while, but you couldn't tell!) Go. For real. I bought a box for my mom, and she ate almost the whole thing by herself. They're that good. I'd divorce my husband if they--the donuts--asked me to marry them.

ok. seriously, chicagoans. we have NOTHING like this. these folks take donuts (and friendly service) to an entirely different level. there is nothing more pavlovian than standing in a short line, watching the donuts being made and iced around you, smelling the sweet, yeasty aromas and salivating at the ridiculous selection under the glass counter... old fashioned buttermilk, coconut, powdered, maple crullers (that absolutely melt in your mouth), chocolate iced, twists... don't worry they have ALL your favorites. and definitely DO NOT forget the glazed! my recommendation, get a dozen (or two) glazed and another dozen mixed. this is what krispy creme wants to be when it grows up. i can honestly say that i have NEVER had a better donut. and i'm kind of a homer simpson clone, when it comes to fried dough... this place is a little out of the way, and the neighborhood is a bit rougher than downtown, but the people here were absolutely part of the draw. from the cheerful and efficient women behind the counter (one of whom waited patiently, while i readied my camera phone, to pose for a photo with a giant tray of donuts that were ready to be dipped), to the patrons, dutch girl is one of the most friendly places in detroit! even one of the patrons, who quickly noticed that my girlfriend and i must be from out of town, hung around out front and gave us tips on all the best detroit sandwich and street food spots. (next stop, zeff's coney island!!!) in fact, our new buddy, warren, directed us to the eastern market, one of the greatest indoor/outdoor produce, flower and food bazaars i've ever seen in this country!!! anyway, the donuts were the best i've ever had and the people were amazing. all in all, this place belongs at #1 on my favorite places to eat when in detroit! can't wait to come back!!!

We had to make this stop first thing in the morning and let me tell you if you love Krispy Kreme donuts then you will love these because they also have the old fashion taste of the sugar glaze on them. So many to chose from and hot and fresh....i ate three of them (Boston Creme) it was to hard to stop at one!

Oh. My. God. I'm drooling just remembering these! Light, fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. This little shop on Woodward, just south of 7 Mile, never would have hit my radar if we hadn't noticed them on some TV show. But, damn, I'm so glad we found them! We went over on a Saturday morning, not too early and not too late, and quickly found parking. (Ok, we cheated. We parked at the gas station on the corner.) The shop is tiny, mainly because the kitchen (with big, bright windows all over giving you a peak into the freshly-made-donut process) takes up the room. When we got there, they were making fresh twists and glazing a fresh batch of donuts. The women working there are not only friendly (posing for our goofy pictures) but patient and helpful when putting together your custom dozen. We got a little of everything and certainly were not disappointed. The simple glazed donut (what better way to determine a good donut than by tasting a classic?) was light, fluffy, and bounding with flavor. It was sweet without killing every tastebud with a sugar-high. The other favorite was the maple cruller. My my my. It truly flakes apart and melts in your mouth. Sublime. Unfortunately, we missed the cinnamon rolls (they sell out early!) but we'll be making a point to stop by again and again. Plus, at $7/dozen (any way you like it), I don't think it could get much better. The neighborhood it's in may not be the best (it is Detroit, after all) but these donuts are without question worth the stop.

I'm not a huge donut connoisseur but I played along. My friends that I went with were ecstatic to say the least. They ranted and raved about their crullers but I wasn't that impressed with my nutty. I felt there was more icing than nuts, I tend to like it the other way around but it was good just the same. The place is really small. Basically just a vestibule to stand in while the lady behind the bullet-proof glass takes your order.. seriously. If you check out the other side you can see the guy literally making the donuts while you wait, that was cool. I did enjoy my donut but I'm thinking I just may have to get a cruller next time.

Every time I get back to Michigan I come by for the best doughnuts I've ever had. I grew up a couple of miles from here, and I remember so many nights in the 1970s when my father and I would drive here at 9:00 at night to pick up a dozen for the family. The cinnamon rolls are the best, with the glazed old fashioned a close second?

I went here because off my cousin's recommendation that this would be the perfect place to go for a donut lover such as myself. Love the donuts! The cinnamon bun donut is crazy goooooood. It's a tiny corner shop with street parking, but well worth it to go. Just look out for a little chinese lady that works there with little patience and lots of attitude. And yes, I have dubbed her the "donut nazi". She did give the place some character though, and my cousin's apologetic look made me realize that the workers there aren't usually so hostile. Next time I'm in Michigan I will be back...

Donut perfection. There are some people here who are kvetch about the sketchy neighborhood (yeah, it's mildly 'hood') and the bullet proof window (who cares?), but you're going here not for ambiance, but the ultimate donut experience. It sells, bar none, the best donuts on the face of the earth. Writing about them doesn't do them justice. It would be like trying to write about what an orgasm is like. You just have to get down to Woodward and 7 Mile and get some in you. Do it.

Driving by it looked legitimate, it called to us, we responded. Ordered through bullet proof glass, but too full to eat the delicious morsels. They sat in my car overnight in the cold of night. We ate them at work the next morning... Delicious! Man, I can't imagine their amazement fresh in the morn. Blueberry and some type of cruller, my Bostonian coworker and I loved them.

Right on Woodward and 7 Mile, you have Dutch Girl Donuts. Hole in the wall? Yes. I don't even think there's a place to sit actually. These donuts are pretty darn good. Across the board. Glazed, custard, vanilla, and even the doughnut holes are excellent. Simple, light, and absolutely tasty. And that's only a small sample of their offerings. And it's cheap too. What's crazy is that we showed up 30 minutes before closing. If the leftover donuts prior to closing are this good, I can only imagine how good they are first thing in the morning. Delicious and delicious. I have a crush on this Dutch Girl.

after taking my life into my own hands (the area is about as bad as it gets in D) to try these highly rated donuts, I was greatly disappointed. First, no one mentions the bullet-proof glass one has to talk through and choose donuts that are barely visible to the near sighted. There was absolutely nothing special about these small donuts. The sour cream had a delicate vanilla flavor; the yeast/raised/glazed, cake, jelly were all quite common. Take your $7 a dozen, and find something of a higher quality to indulge in.

THE BEST DONUT SHOP IN DETROIT!!!! I remember when my sister and I was young my mom would take us on drives to put us to sleep first stop Dutch Girl where we would get a warm glazed donut and a carton of milk...the best...of course when I had children the tradition continued.... To funny ever chase the kids get they try to get me to drive the 10 miles out of the way for a dozen of donuts which last about 5 min....lol Really if you like donuts from scratch u will love Dutch Girl they also have cookies sometimes it go with the season....if you just like coffee nothing fancy you will love theirs!!! They are open 6 days a week (closing and opening can confuse u)...they make their last batch somewhere around 7pm on Saturday and once everything is sold out that's when they close, til about 4am Monday morning) Try it u will love it

A medic told me how they got called there and the guy was shot and laying in the little vestibule, if you've been there you know how small it is, and they were trying to work on him and people were coming in and walking around and over them. We're talking about people who need their donuts now. To me a donut is pretty much a donut, but these people show up every day and do it. There's nothing else there; it's like a little oasis. I wouldn't give anybody less than five stars for that.

OH Dutch Girl! I never fully appreciated these donuts until I moved to NY where a quality donut is surprisingly difficult to find. My absolute favorite is the raisin donut. So much so that when people visit from Detroit, they swing by to pick up a few and bring them to me. They are always fresh, great flavors, amazing texture and family owned. I can still remember being a kid and my parents putting the box on top of the fridge in hopes that they'd last longer. They never did :)

I would consider myself a doughnut connoisseur and these are pretty outstanding, mostly because of their simplicity. I read about Dutch Girl Donuts on a Detroit blog and knew immediately I would be going out of my way to try them within a week. I was in a foul mood when I woke up today and it seemed to be the perfect day for a doughnut pick-me-up. I made the trip south on Woodward and found them right at the southeast corner of 7 Mile and Woodward, which I believe to be Highland Park. As soon as I got out of my car, the scent of fried dough hit me in the face and my spirits lifted. I got a dozen to take to the office, and I split a few with some of my fellow fried-dough loving peeps, so that I could sample more than one kind and make a fair assessment. The cinnamon rolls seemed to be the biggest hit, but I really like the blueberry cake one. It's incredibly dense, but delicious. The chocolate cake batter one, which is more log like than your typical doughnuts, was really lovely. Very light and cakey, but not too cakey. I don't like cake, so this was a good thing. At a reasonable $6 a dozen, I will definitely be making another trip here soon. They're not the best doughnuts I've ever had in my life, but they are pretty damn close and the chain places don't even come close in comparison.

Now THESE are donuts. Not those smooshy circular things you find at Krispy Kreme, or those tough, flavorless hockey pucks you are wont to find at Dunkin's. No, the real, true, donuts of the motor city are to be found here. Perfectly flavored, with the perfect crunch (is that the right word? ) outside that you call peel off to leave a pillow soft, cake core. Every flavor is define, but my personal favorite is plain. You can't go wrong with perfection.
