How have I not reviewed this place yet? Let me just cut to the chase..love this place!! I have had so many different cocktails here and I've loved each and every single one of them to the point where it almost defies science (I usually can find something I don't like...usually). Just thinking about their drinks makes me want to go back today. Plus, the atmosphere is pretty cool. And obviously the bar tenders are too.

On the edge of Eastern Market. A dark high ceiling long bay, starting with a function area near the door, then some tables, then a long old wood bar. The service and mixed drinks are both very high quality. They mix drinks using their own liquor products, so the selection is somewhat limited. However, what they do mix is very good. They were doing tastings during our visit, so we had all their liquors straight with water in between. I only liked two of their products straight, but I realize that is very much individual taste and so i didn't make that part of my rating. We did not try the food, but it looked good. A very pleasant stop on a Market Saturday.

Visiting the Eastern Market with my husband, this rainy day- walked right past the DCD, we circled around the block - determined to find it. Luckily someone was standing outside the doorway- we finally found this hidden gem. Great atmosphere, good tunes, food was delicious, drinks were smooth- we will be back. We bought a bottle of their bourbon, cool packaging - looking forward to a little on the rocks tonight. Wish there was a light shining on their sign- so more people will come... Or do I....

I went here after the heart walk on a Saturday afternoon and it was delicious! The service was a little bit slow, but they were definitely busy. It took us a minute to find the location, but i enjoyed the dark atmosphere. They have brunch on Saturdays at the moment and it was worth finding it. I had the city plate which was buttery polenta, campo cheese, collard greens, hot sauce and two sunny eggs. I'm not even a fan of collard greens, but this was DELICIOUS. I cleaned my plate. My boyfriend ordered the egg sandwich w/ taleggio cheese, paprika aioli, pea tendrils and scrambled eggs on a brioche bun. He also had a sunday jam which is some type of weekly jam that changes on a biscuit. He enjoyed both of his dishes as well. The only downside of our experience was the bloody marys. They were 7 or 8$ and contained way to much pepper. They may have been made with absolute peppar or something but I'd try out one of the other cocktails next time!

Staff here is badass. Booze even more so. Everything's got a unique (tasty) twist - bourbon, whiskey, even vodka.

Seriously, as good as it gets. Their spirits are no joke: smooth, delicious, and Pure Michigan. Chuck's a magician with his specialty cocktails and the waitstaff is warm, welcoming, and very cool. Great for a drink after work, great new fun place to take a date, or roll into during the Farmers Market. Cannot recommend highly enough. GO!

I would actually give DCD a 4.5 rating and here's why: I would describe this as a hidden spot/gem in Eastern Market, but they usually have chalk boards up so just follow the signs. Inside is dark tasting room it has a slight musty smell and feel, but very chill laid back, possibly even a rustic- romantic vibe in a way. The tables and chairs are simplistic and old looking but fit the inside decor, or lack of decor. There are about 6-7 tables and a long bar rail with bar stools. The drinks are craft cocktails made with DCD bourbon, gin, vodka & whiskey. Don't come here looking to order a tequila sunrise or screwdriver or you may get a strange look from the bartender. The drinks on their website are currently not up-to-date. So I can't tell you exactly what we had ordered because I forgot the creative names, but my friend ordered something "Tinder" which had blackberries and soda and I believe bourbon? It was sweet and almost "puckery" where your cheeks tingled and your lips puckered out :). I ordered a drink with their gin which also had some type of carrot beet mixture. It was thick and smooth. Reminded me of a punch. It had a beet taste, so don't order obviously if you're not a fan of beets. Two thumbs up on both over all They also have some small munchie like items to order to munch on while relaxing with friends, family or your date. And now they serve brunch items! Review to come... Very cool spot to bring someone, anyone. Any they could possibly be dog friendly? There was a large black lab relaxing with their owner at the bar rail. (If brunch is good and they are dog friendly their rating would definitely be 5+stars!)

Can u say awesome in a way that'll be 10× more awesome that the last awesome that was ever mentioned?? This bar is exactly just that. A nice cozy bar that's just opened up recently and literally came out swinging. Mind you, if you're looking for commercial liqour, you might as well turn around and go to your neighborhood bar because these guys specialize in Pure Detroit. Vodka, Gin, Bourbon and Whiskey,, the circle of everything that is holy in the world of liqourdom is blended here and sourced locally. This ladies and gentlemen, give this bar something called "CHARACTER." A real genuine gem if you truly look at it. Their bar tenders couldn't miss even if they tried... don't know what to order? Let them know what kind of cocktails your prefer and they'll respond with. "Don't worry, I got you." Life is great when establishments like this makes their mark in a city which is ever so redeveloping into the true city of the future. Weeeeeeee!! Add me up on instagram @rodtorres3

Really excellent, feels a little strange walking in then bam, awesome atmosphere, basically just a bar for serving great drinks and a couple tables, friendly staff, clearly pretty new as some people are still reading their recipes but that doesn't change the fact that they taste delicious! I can't say I'm a pro with whiskey/bourbon/vodka so I'm not going to give them all ratings but I can say that I will be back!

Kind of on a hidden street in the Eastern Market area, it's what one would call a hidden gem that serves up stiff drinks. Next to the pet store, this place has an old-fashioned sign on the building -- a black exterior that matches the inside of the place. This place has no aesthetic bells and whistles; it's simple black-top tables and a long bar that has nice chairs. The liquor on the shelf shows what the distillery is all about: gin, vodka and bourbon. Drinks cost as much as they do at other distilleries in the Detroit and metro area, including Valentine in Ferndale. I paid $9 for an Old Fashioned, which was the cheapest drink on the menu if I recall correctly. You expect to pay double-digit prices for such drinks, and once you taste them you know why. They are STIFF. If you're a man the drinks will put some hair on your chest, and if you're a woman the drinks will ...well, I'll let you finish that sentence. It's good to know that you can pay for a drink and get your money's worth in quality and quantity. I tried my girlfriend's vodka drink and it was delicious, and I'm not even a big vodka fan. Funny thing is that she never really drinks liquor but she loved her drink. They also have food items during brunch and then other items you can only get later in the day. We didn't eat but didn't need; we were drinking our brunch and would gladly do the same again.

Walked into this place on a quiet Thursday night and I was surprised at how nice the decor was. Loved the darkened room and the cool blues playing. Tried the bourbon, whiskey, and the gin. Not a gin guy, but I loved the bourbon and whiskey. I'll be headed back to this place regularly. Walked out with a bottle of the two faced bourbon.

Came here after having dinner downtown for a couple drinks. Let me say that they make one of the best Old Fashioned drinks that I've ever had. I originally wanted to only have 1 drink before moving on to the next bar, but it was so good that I had to have 2. I wish I could remember the bartender that made the drink bc he did an amazing job. I will definitely making my way back here when I come home to visit the mitten again.

I absolutely love the Detroit City Distillery!! Not only the drinks and atmosphere are amazing but also the staff. They were all so friendly and had a great music selection on. I'm not a fan of gin but was talked into some amazing drinks that I will definitely order again!! My friends and I went there on a Sunday afternoon and couldn't have left any happier!

Our first visit to Detroit City Distillery was fantastic!! Not pretentious, but a nice blend of raw and casual. Barkeeps Evan and Leonard were entertaining, informative and attentive. Even the barbacks were friendly. All in all, a great team. Drinks were excellent and the boys asked questions about our tastes to be sure we got something we would like. The music was loud with a Crown PA amp driving very nice wall-mounted JBLs. Lighting was adjustable and very ambient. The bar and bar back was antique and has great character. We had a great time and we'll be back soon.

Me and one of my girlfriends decided to go downtown Detroit to the Eastern Market last Saturday. Boy oh boy was it ever crowded. The hustle and bustle of a thriving city!!! We were walking all over and were on Riopelle. Asked someone where was this distillery and she pointed to a barrel on top of the entryway! Who would have known that inside this place that seemed shady was this wonderful distillery! Bartenders were wonderful. I asked one of them how many people were working and he said that there were 2 senior bartenders, 4 junior bartenders and 2 servers! The history of this place was that it use to be a slaughter house and the owner use to work at it and now it is transformed into the Detroit City Distillery. I believe he had said that they have been open for 3 weeks!!!! If you drink wine - there is no wine at this place. They basically brew/distil or whatever you call it Whisky, Vodka, and Bourban!!! The names were Two Faced Blended Bourbon, Bloodline Whiskey, and Gilded Age Vodka. I initially had a bloody mary! OMG was it ever delicious. Then I had a punch which was pink and tasted like a girl's drink, then I had a Manhattan - smooooooth! Had a lot of fun and the customers there were all very nice as well as the people who worked there. Thier motto is "Taste the History, Toast to Revival". Cheers. Give it a try if you are in the area - you will not be disappointed!

We were visiting from out of town and stopped in. A.J. was our bartender, he made us an awesome off the menu bourbon cocktail and gave us some sweet recommendations of other bars to visit. He was very knowledgeable and we felt right at home. Cool atmosphere, cool bartenders, great cocktails.

Nice effort and drink menu interesting. However listening to F***, F****, Nigger, F***. Will never be my idea of appropriate music. This music selection kills the atmosphere and is an embarrassment to Detroit. Get a grip and have the staff act like they give a shit!!

I love the atmosphere of this bar. The bartenders are super friendly and down-to-earth. Of course the drinks are delicious. Great place for any occasion!

Everything about this place from the moody décor to the superb drinks is right up my alley. I had heard about this opening, but had never been in, and I didn't realize that it's stumbling distance from Eastern Market. We had the pleasure of talking to one of the owners while we were there and I loved how open they were about their product! It was also great to hear that they source as much locally as possible or grow it themselves. They are releasing smaller bottles of all whiskey, bourbon, and vodka soon and will also release the gin this week. Needless to say I'm excited. As for the drinks, the bartenders really know what they're doing. I've never had such delicious and smooth drinks as I did here. I had the corpse reviver and my friend had a neat whiskey. Service was good and all of the employees were very helpful and knowledgeable. I will definitely be back. Yay for new favorite distilleries!

Ok this place is awesome times infinity and beyond! Totally the place that eastern market has needed for so long! A few friends and I crept up to this very non-descript building last Sunday after enjoying some brunch at union street. Don't blink twice, and look for the ages barrel hanging from overhead! As soon as you walk in, it kinda gives you the feel that you are walking into a speak easy from the prohibition era! However, the awesome bartender was playing some dope classic rock, and cool early 90s alternative! Keep that up bud! Now I'm totally in love- I mean IN LOVE with Moscow mules. Like I could drink them got breakfest, lunch, and dinner (well that makes me sound like an alcoholic). So I think I have a pretty seasoned palette... And theirs is too notch! Just the right amount of lime, ginger beer, and vodka! Also noticed they have some pretty cool small plates as well, didn't get a chance to sample those, but I'm sure they are dope!

This place is really great! Had a wonderful experience, great drinks and good people. Everyone behind the bar was super friendly, and the vibe is a nice laid back vibe (as opposed to some of these hipster "craft" bars opening). Everyone is eager to explain what is available and give a background on their spirits. The building has a nice chill atmosphere and they play a nice assortment of music. Everything they make is from scratch it seems. The ginger beer they were serving was freshly made, their syrups and mixers are from scratch, they have delicious brandy soaked cherries for certain garnish, just really top notch stuff. I wish this place great success!

I had such high expectations for when I finally found this place. The drinks were so so, I find that the oakland in Ferndale is a better choice. Their home distilled spirits were exceptional, especially their gin & vodka. They're sriracha was drenched soggy blend(yuck) their truffle popcorn was so salty my tongue quit on me. Their staff tho, what a bunch of chachi fools! They kept turning from the patrons to laugh about whatever was said away from the public(particularly seemed as if they were poking fun at their customers, seriously bad form), they did a poor job acknowledging customers, especially when it came down to getting the bill, & their security guy had the best personality in the house. He made the visit acceptable at best with his cordial mannerisms. I was excited to come here, I would not recommend this place, hell Id rather drive to Monroe (near Ohio) for the 129 martini lounge for their bartender matt, at least he has charisma & pays attention to his patrons.

This being my first visit here, I'll have to say I am a fan. Their selection of drinks leans more towards gin than anything else from what I saw in the menu. However it's done very well. Even for a non Gin drinker like myself. The music is the highlight of the place it's very melodic yet dark. I'm in love. Also there is an art auction tonight which makes the walls have some very interesting things to take a gander at. I'd come here again anytime.

It was a cold Valentine's Day and my husband and I were looking for a new place to try for drinks. I did a search and found DCD. We get there at about 8:30 and it's empty because of the time and frigid temperatures. It was located on a street that was ally like which made it more exciting. Upon entering, there was s large bar, s dance floor, a few tables, dim lights, and a great music mix. Sat down and ordered a vodka drink. At first I was hesitant about the $9 for a small drink. NBD, they gave plenty of liquor. I can remember the name but it was vodka, lemons, raspberry, and club soda. Delicious. The bar tender made mixing the drink an art, which made it fun to watch. Both bartenders working that night knew their stuff about the liquors and we're cool as hell. I highly recommend. 5 stars all around. Great atmosphere, great service, great drinks!

I really dig this spot. I like the speakeasy feel of the actual bar area, it's endearing and nostalgic. With that said, I hoped the drinks would match the ambiance and wasn't disappointed. I didn't realize that they only sell their own distilled liquors but that is another plus to the experience. Drinks are 8 to 12 bucks and they do sell product to take home and enjoy. I ordered the Fig-ure it out, a whiskey cocktail with fig and house bitters.I was a bit apprehensive about the fig but it WORKED! M.I.S.T.E.R. ordered Fashionably Yogi "bacon washed" bourbon and other ingredients blended to perfection. Yes it's true, bacon goes with everything :) Really cool place, can't wait to go back and try more.

Let me be honest with you. I DON'T want any of you to come to this bar because it's mine, all mine. I've searched all over the Metro area to find an adult drinking establishment I could call home and this is it. I like this place so much that I came back twice in one day. I believe that a great drinking spot isn't great just for it's spirits, it's great because of the people working there. Bryan and Evan created more than dam good drinks, they created a GREAT DRINKING EXPERIENCE. They both had to be born from a mother who was a Mixologist and a father who was a Bartender. Yes there is a difference. With a combination of their skills and a dam good product to work with I had the pleasure of enjoying some of the best adult beverages in Metro Detroit. If you do read this PLEASE Promise that you won't tell anyone about my new home.

Excellent cocktails. Dark, mysterious ambience. Friendly, unpretentious staff. Reasonably priced drinks. Limited charcuterie and small plates; but delicious. House made bitters and since liquor. Excellent for a group night out.

  • Ryan P.

I'm surprised by how good others have reviewed this place because our whole group of six had terrible drinks. My whiskey sour was the worst drink I think I've ever had, and the Manhattans were gross. Did we just hit them on a super off night? Also, two of five people working were nice, but the other three were awkward and rude. I would never go back here unless they severely changed (that is, fixed) their mixed drinks. That should NOT be what they get wrong.

We have been to the Detroit City Distillery 4 times in the last two weeks. We have enjoyed each of our visits which including dancing on one visit. The bartenders are great and give you personal attention without interfering with your conversations. They were great about answering our questions about the Distillery. (It has only been open for four weeks.) Don't let the outside scare you away, it is lovely inside. They take time and energy in making your drink. It is worth the wait. They will be adding food in the near future. They distill bourbon, whiskey, and vodka and make some great cocktails. Also, the "punch of the day" was outstanding the day we had it. They play a variety of music and you can bring in your vinyl records on Wednesday and they will play them for the crowd. A fun, relaxing place.

Drinks and atmosphere top notch. Anything used in drinks are sourced right from eastern market. And spirits from Michigan. Very low key speakeasy feel. Very friendly staff.

DCD has some of the best cocktails in town. The price of the cocktails are well worth it. Each bartender takes the time to make your drink right. Anything on the menu is sure to awe. Please do not order some basic B cocktail.....the bartenders know best!

Very comfortable spot. Excellent Bourbon, Whisky, Gin & Vodka. Pretty busy, steady stream of customers. Very eclectic, mixed, friendly atmosphere. We will be back.

This is my kind of place. All Detroit City Distillery booze behind the bar. Really good bar tenders. Cool atmosphere with all the jars and fixings right on the bar with you kind of crowding your space but in a cool way. Never liked Gin until now. The Whiskey is stellar. You forget that it is daytime in this place.

    (5)
  • Johnny B.

Watch for the barrel hanging from the sign to find the place, you won't regret it! Hubby tried both the whiskey and the bourbon and I had the post party depression and DCD hot cocoa. We were happy with all cocktails and the service/atmosphere as well! Definitely going to go back especially for their Sunday brunch!

Drinks are great, bartenders are friendly and it's extremely dark. Would be great for a first date once it gets more popular. Maybe some live music would be nice later on.

Better cocktails and less hipstery/snobbish than Sugar House, much better atmosphere and physical space than Two James. About my only complaint is that the cocktails could be a little bit bigger, but they've got a great happy hour special, tasty spirits, and down-to-earth bartenders.

Great drinks, delicious small plates, chill atmosphere and absolutely hilarious and fun staff. So glad I found this place

  • Ron S.

This place was nothing great. Drinks were a bit over priced, and the service was really, really bad. I sat at the bar on a Saturday afternoon with 4 bartenders working. Sat with an empty glass for 25 minutes before getting someone to get me another. And the place was not busy. I'd recommend the Sugar House in Corktown over this place any day.

  • Vassilis J.

CDC isn't anything but a distillery with a bar and that's refreshingly different. The guy selling CDC drinks at an event got sloshed, beet red and was happily engaged with everything. The gin is great and I'd take the whiskey over the bourbon. The bartenders can be friendly or not but likable either way. Don't expect much but some liquor and a relaxed crowd.

  • Amy B.

This is a Yelp kind of place if there ever was one: Hidden, rustic, and craft. The bar is covered with juices, infusions, cut fresh fruits, veggies and herbs. There are real eggs. We were at Eastern Market buying up our fresh food when we came upon a sandwich board sign that said Whiskey and had an arrow pointing down the road, naturally we were compelled to follow the arrow. Upon entering we were greeted by a couple and their puppy, then we made our way over to a table and were greeted by a very friendly server who really seemed to enjoy telling us all about the cocktails on the small menu. When the 4 drinks arrived at the table, we passed them around to prove to each other that WE were the one that had ordered the best drink on the menu. Of course we were all correct. They were all the best. There was nothing not to like about the experience of following the arrow into this bar.

  • Brian B.

It starts with the fundamentals: what they've distilled. I am a whiskey person, single malt in particular, and I give the highest compliments to DCD's whiskey. Thoroughly pleasurable, smooth, and interesting. Drink it neat or with an ice cube. Their cocktails, to the extent I've tried, are all nicely done. The space: atmospheric, quiet (when I've been there), and classy. Could benefit from a little bit more on the walls, perhaps. The location: awesome. Eastern Market is once of the coolest and overall best places to visit in Detroit, and it's great to see it have solid nighttime activity, too (outside of the long-running Bert's, of course).

  • Paula D.

We've been there twice now. They have good drinks, nice looking bottles and the place is great. Off the path a little, but, I know this makes me sound like an old fart the music and the volume is really bad. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with loud music, but it should at least be good loud music. B-52s and Quiet Riot at Volume 11 don't fit the bill. I'm afraid we'll be sticking with Two James. I can only shout over Love Shack Baby so many times

    (2)
  • Ziggy G.

They have a short and simple cocktail menu that doesn't over power and confuse you with fancy named ingredients. The Hot Toddys are amazing here, a definite must have in the winter months.

This is what Detroit has needed for a while now. I'm a big fan of Sugar House and Two James so couldn't wait for DCD to open. We've been there twice now and the bartenders are great and the cocktails & spirits excellent. What I like most about this distillery is that they aren't trying to rip you off. They charge a fair price for a generous pour. On the contrary, we just went to Cornerstone Barrel House on Woodward that opened last weekend and they are charging $16 for a bourbon on the rocks which is outrageous. DCD is just the opposite-a bunch of great guys who truly want to make sure you enjoy the evening with a handcrafted cocktail.
