GOLD MEDAL WING DINGS!!! BEST I'VE EVER HAD. i always get the party platter of wings for parties and THEY NEVER DISAPPOINT. i've only had their wing dings, but i've never had better and until i find a replacement (which is highly unlikely considering how flavorful and deliciously fried these scrumptious chunks of chicken are), i will allways compare other wing dings to these bad boys.

"What do you want me to do about it?" That's what the manager told me when I explained over and over again that one of my 4 coneys with squeeze cheese had nothing but ground beef and squeeze cheese on it. No dog no chili no mustard just beef and cheese

The food is good, but the counter help is awful. They are rude and short and lack customer service. I have given them several try's and each time the result is the same poor service. They have officially lost my business.

After 2 am ur choices are pretty limited. Greektown stops serving at 3 am. I like this place because of the hard workers. They work hard! Tip well! The place could surely be updated- would cause it to be cleaner too, for this, they lose a star. Standard menu, large, but I would say they need to dip their french toast a little longer, its supposed to be fluffy, not dry on the inside. I think they work to fast. My french toast looked too much like bread with an egg fried to it. They sacrificed delivery for speed, so another star lost. Nonetheless, its the best if not only place to eat 24 hours a day in the city, with secure parking in back. In fact, the front door is also secured, security is on the front door too! And they pat down the guys.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The outside of this place doesn't look all that welcoming and because of the crowd that often hangs out by the nearby liquor stores you wouldn't think that this place would be very well kept up. However, the inside is very big, very nice, and very clean. The food was good, typical coney island food. Very large menu with lots to choose from. They use the word "squeeze" to refer to the melted cheese often found on nachos. The word choice is kind of a turn off but a definite must when getting the chili cheese fries, which are very tasty. The service was good. The one man that appeared to be serving the whole dining room was working very hard and seemed under appreciated by the customers there. He ended up getting about a $20 tip from our party of three because I'm sure in a place like that he doesn't get tipped well or treated well very often. One thing to keep in mind is that the crowd that sometimes frequents this place ins't the most pleasant. However, it's an easy thing to look past if you don't go in very late at night. They also deliver until 2am with only a $4 delivery charge. Great place to get a quick and good meal!

The food here is poor. I wont say disgusting, its just regular bad, which, all coney islands make crap food so...I guess if you like eating tasteless greasy unseasoned food at a coney island you will like this place. The staff are complete @$$holes, I will never go there again, I have never been so incessantly and blatantly insulted by anyone I was overpaying to give me crap food for no reason whatsoever and wait so long to get it in my life. Over an hour for 2 orders. Time before that we waited over a half hour to even have our orders taken (and there were maybe 5 tables in the place occupied) and we got up and walked out. Ridiculous. Oh and if you're looking to get shot, show up here after 12, especially on weekends, youre guaranteed to be in the middle of a drunken melee, which Ive seen twice myself and heard from everyone else thats gone after club hours. Ive never been to a restaurant that had security guards frisking the patrons on entry before. Thats new.

this place is located on a "think twice" part of the avenue... i had the corned beef sandwich... it was pretty good... i loved how the guy behind the counter knew all the neighborhood heads comin in... referring to all the older men as "mr. so-and-so" or giving daps to all the thugged out cats rollin in and speaking to them in low whispers... when i walked in i got the "who the fuck is this out of towner" look from him... my LB hat didn't help with everyone rockin their detroit D... but i was still served like any other customer and was quite happy with the visit... i'd go back again to try their extensive diner/deli menu...

Always screws up your order. Then when you call to get your order fixed they offer to put you in a book. Then when you call to get the food they fucked up the first time, they tell you they can't give it to you because the manager isn't there. Apparently the manager is the only person here capable of reading. I would steer clear of this place. There are places with better service.

    (2)
  • Payton W.

The manager was horrible. When I called she rushed me when making my decision. And she made me hang up and look at the menu instead of telling me if tomato comes on the sandwich I was ordering. The food was horrible too.

My time at D1 can only be described as unfathomable, I was at a low point in my life, my time on this earth was if anything tumultuous. I had walked from the theater when a robber shot my mother and father, luckily my butler was there to take my place years later he took me to this establishment, where I sat in aww of the sheer pleasure that the food had given me. Although the overall experience was remarkable I must tell you all of my favorite part; how warm the bread was. Taking a bite of the perfectly crisp and warm radiance of the flour and yeast baby. If you find yourself in Detroit please find your way to D1, and ask for thier, I'm sure now famous side of bread. God's be on your soon to be delicious adventure.

It's primarily drunk food. Very good for the money. Excellent mozzarella sticks for the appetizer. Coneys are ok. If you want good ones go downtown to Lafayette to get the cream of the crop. Best bang for the buck you can get though. I had the sausage egg and cheese sandwich on the breakfast menu. Service is average. You get all your food on time and without question. It's what is expected.

I decided to give this place another chance after reading newer reviews. They finally cleaned up the place and the service is much better. It can still take a while to get your food, but at least I can sit down and not feel line I'm in a dump. The staff is also very friendly as long as you follow the golden rule.

I've been into Detroit 1 Coney Island a couple times on a late night, gotta eat run. The menu is expansive...often making it difficult for me to make a decision in the middle of the night/early morning after I've had too much to drink. I've had a steak sandwich -- which served its purpose that night, but the steak was rather fatty. I most recently had their shrimp stir fry, which was tasty and plentiful, but the pieces of stir fry veggies were HUGE and needed to be cut a few more times and onions overruled the dish. I had to pick those huge pieces out. Other than that, they didn't skimp on the big pieces of shrimp. I had more than enough for lunch the next day. I've ordered pancakes for carry out and the order is a very filling size. Three large, fluffy pancakes with sufficient to-go syrup. I was very happy with it when I got to my destination to eat. Thankfully, this coney has delivery service, which is convenient when I have a hankering for something and want it delivered to work. The service is friendly and fast -- I've not had a bad customer service experience. The last time I was there, the chef even inquired on how I liked my dish. Nice.

G is playing his last week with the DSO. In order to entertain myself, I decided to take a walk and get some breakfast. I saw this restaurant and thought I'd give it a try, since I saw that they served Breakfast. They also deliver till 2am, and they are open always. It's really more of a diner than a restaurant. Their coffee was typical diner coffee. They have coneys and entrees. I really wanted a sausage and biscuit. They didn't have it on their menu, but both items separately were listed on the sides. The food was good. It tasted exactly what I expected it to taste like. It was made to order. My total bill was about $5.50.

One of the best Coney Islands in the D. Wait staff are friendly. It is Detroit so you will see people from all walks of life dine here.

I've been to Detroit one quite a few times but this time i order delivery, i order three dinner one was a gyro dinner, the meat was old and dry plus there was no sauce or lettuce. I was told that's what i order. After telling the woman i was usually happy with there food i was told they couldn't bring me out a new dinner because but i could come in and they me a credit. The credit is find but will not even go back get. Lesson learned check your food before the delivery guy leaves.

As a self proclaimed Coney Island enthusiast I certify this to be the best chili cheese fries in Detroit. No arguments, and their fried chicken pita sandwich could feed a small army. Excellent service, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere. Oh, did I mention that they are 24 hours? This place is a gem. Go here, you will love it.

  • Leila J.

I work at the DMC hospitals and we usually get delivery from here, however I have actually eaten inside a couple of times. I really like that they are 24 hours and that they serve everything on their menu all the time. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich with fries, but the last time I was here my friend got an ENORMOUS egg white omlette which she said was delicious. This is really a Detroit gem.

I've never gone to this coney to dine in, but I can tell you from personal experience, DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY FROM DETROIT ONE! My coworkers and I called to order a chicken strip pita and 2 chicken caesar pitas. The gentleman on the phone had to keep asking the cooks if they had the stuff to make the caesar wraps, then when my coworker asked for the total, he said he would call us back, she tried telling him that we were paying with a card and he said he would call in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later, when we still hadn't heard back, we tried calling to cancel our order. The first call, we were put on hold for 15 minutes, we hung up and called back, at which point we were told that the driver was already out with our food. We still didn't know our total nor had we paid. We asked if they wanted the card number now and were told that the driver had a credit card machine on him and we could pay him when he got there. When we again asked for our total, they couldn't give it to us because the driver had the ticket. The driver finally showed up over an hour after we placed our order, with no credit card machine. We had to call back again to pay. The driver didn't even have a receipt to give us. After he left, we opened up our food to find 2 grilled chicken wraps and a chicken stir fry. The stir fry was topped with a pita, with a sheet of paper stuck to the bottom of it. We tried calling back to get a refund since at this point, we were getting ready to leave work soon. The same gentleman that took our order, don't know if he's a manager, argued with us about what we ordered, saying that we never said anything about ceasar wraps. He kept saying that he was looking at our order that he took down (funny, when we called for our total, they couldn't give it to us because the driver had the ticket.) He then made a snide apology saying that maybe he wasn't good enough for us or at his job. When he finally agreed to give us a refund, he said that he was sending the driver back for the food... still waiting for them to come take their food back. I don't think that I've ever had a worse experience ordering delivery. Needless to say, we'll be sticking to Jimmy John's for late night delivery.

Other than waiting 2 hours to have my food delivered it was pretty good. Next time I'll try eating in.

Dog was very good. Meaty with a crisp snap on the outer skin. The coney sauce was burnt and tasted like liquid asphalt. Really ruined the whole experience. This happens when it is re-heated endlessly and water is added to keep it in a liquid state. Waitress forgot my Pepsi, so all I had was water. Bun was perfect. Service was fast. Place needs a rehab. My seat cushion in the booth had a 3 foot gash and the stuffing was emerging. Place looked filthy, but hell I was hungry.

    (2)
  • Darren R.

I give this place 3 stars because I'm rating this in the grand universe of restaurants, and there's no coney that should rate 4 or 5 stars. That being said, this place is kind of a hidden gem. I call it such because it's hidden in the shadow of Atlas Global Bistro, the higher-end restaurant right down the block. Plus, you have to work your way through the crowd of homeless and/or crazy people hanging out at the bus stop nearby to get to the place. Once you're there, however, the food is very good for a coney. Their chili fries are good, and the Greek salad with chicken is very good and a generous size.

So, I know that 90% of Coney restaurants are pretty much exactly the same, but there are some standouts. "Coney" is a broad term; it is confusing because it is both a food *item* and it's also a *genre* of restaurant. When I go to or review Coney restaurants, it's not because I'm reviewing the food item (the actual coney dog). Hell, the only place I ever GET Coney dogs is Lafayette, and this is not a Lafayette review. Detroit One is the perfect Detroit experience. It's fast paced, as genuine as it gets, and completely and utterly unpretentious. You will see crack addicts trying to get $1.00 to buy a bag of chips. You will see probably prostitutes bringing probably Johns into the bathroom for probably illegal activity at 3am. You will get asked for fity cent when you enter and leave the place. You will also get some of the most convenient and freshest diner food in the entire city, especially when you consider the 24-hour nature of Detroit One. Sometimes, it's the only option; luckily, it's a good one. The food is almost universally good; better than average Coney food. There are some very unique standouts on the menu: The Albanian Omelette, the Detroit One Melt, and the tremendously awesome salads. Seriously, the salads are the best food value in the City. They are better than what you can get at Whole Foods. For $9 you can get a GIANT plate of all -fresh spinach absolutely smothered with huge amounts of delicious grilled chicken, well-crisped bacon, a hard boiled egg, onions and peppers, two kinds of melted cheese, and, well the list goes on. The salads here are PHENOMENAL. Seriously, I mean this. Try the Yogi Salad or the Chicken Greek. It will be the best, biggest salad you've had in the city of Detroit. Get the Yogi with Tzadziki. It's incredible. The service can be spotty, but for the most part it's pretty good. It helps to have some empathy for the waitstaff because they have to deal with a LOT of shit in the location they're at. Sometimes the clientele is rowdy, loud, and obnoxious. Sometimes you will see the owner kick someone out angrily. Sometimes there might be some raised voices, but for the most part, everybody here just minds their own business and eats their food. The other thing that really works for Detroit One is that they deliver in greater downtown until 2am. Yes. At any rate, I love this place. It's not fine dining by any means, but it has tons of character and charm, and the awesome food cements the deal.

If it is late at night in Detroit you might find it hard to locate a sit-down restaurant. Luckily for you, this place is now open 24/7! Parking for this place sucks. Oh you want me to park on Woodward? "Hey panhandler man, no, I do not want to give you any change." Service is usually decent. Except for this one time (which I am not going to go into because I think we were just being paranoid.) Prices are average. The food is usually pretty good here. I haven't ever gotten sick off it! I'm not a huge coney dog fan but my girlfriend likes them here. One time when we were here they had two security guards frisking everyone who came in. It was only that one time out of say a dozen times I have been there. One hot tip for this place, the booths that are on Woodward look inviting. They are great but I recommend you sit somewhere else. There is potential for some weirdness that can happen with aforementioned panhandlers. I have seen some funny eye contact, shouting, genital showing and the like from peeps out on Woodward interacting with the customers through the glass. (Same shit happens at Union Street.) Look, it's 3AM in Detroit. This is your only option so enjoy!

We always order from here its become a weekend tradition in my house. Not too mention they are the only thing that delivers to the midtown wood bridge area til 2:30am. They have great food and our food never takes more than a hour. It usually arrives within 30mins. I always order the corn beef on rye, with extra mustard. Throw chili and cheese on the fries. Oh large vanilla milkshake.. Don't mind if I do. My fiance always gets the DBC deluxe.. With mixed milkshake. Our kids love the Mac and cheese wedges and chili cheese fries.. I've also enjoyed their breakfast special. The steak was okay.I've had their mushroom bleu burger it was okay needs some sauce and crunchy fried onions.. Their cheese sticks are good too. Hope this helps... Now I'm hungry lol. They take credit cards as well for delivery. My fav coney island in Detroit.Cake was excellent and moist. Also my fiance dabbled with the nachos they were okay.

My Lord, their service is horrendous and I don't ever remember a time when they actually got my takeout/delivery order right, but their food totally makes up for that. Also, their homemade greek dressing is divine. My favorite is the Wayne State Pita with a side of fries, but I can always have room for the original coney!

Detroit 1 is a coney island located on Woodward just south of the Cultural Center. Recently, Jeffrey B. and I stopped after going to Cliff Bell's to celebrate Pinecone's birthday. I was really surprised at this place. The place is surprisingly big and the walls are covered with interesting artifacts, art and chotchkies. There was also pink and blue neon accenting the walls. The place was clean and seemed well kept thought it wasn't the newest place. It has a huge menu with a ton of different items, with most of them similar to any coney restaurant. I tried the gyro melt which was gyro meat on rye with grilled onions and peppers and a ton of american and swiss cheese. It was the most delicious sandwich I've ever had at a coney. The fries were equally amazing. They tasted like potato wedges but they were fries. The ketchup was in a squeeze bottle. The service was friendly and attentive. The food took longer than other places, but it was cooked well and it was really good. It was also quite busy for 2am on a Wednesday night, in my opinion. I will definitely return after a late night in the D.

Flawless service, pretty good food, great mix of clientele - a very fine Detroit coney This place might be a 3.5 cuz the menu is similar to so many other coneys, but the service is really really top notch every time I go. Recently I've had the fried egg sandwich and their fried cod dinner. Both were really good diner food. The egg sandwich is like folded scrambled eggs (I prefer over-easy in the sandwich) but the bacon is super. The fried fish is really juicy, delicious breading that's not too salty. It's served on rice with gravy which is a-ok but ignorable. Order a delicious rootbeer float and you get half a tub served to the table. Very awesome.

5 stars for a Detroit coney island? Yeah, I did it. The more I try to fight the urge, the more I have to give in....their food is the BOMB. Great location on Woodward near Mack, smack between downtown and midtown. Open 24 hours (except for closing for a bit on Sundays), and they deliver. The clientele is mixed, and you'll get the occassional few folks loitering inside staying out of the cold while waiting for the bus. If you come here on a weekend late night, you'll think you were still at the club for how many folks are inside. I always order my carry out ahead of time, because some of the people here can be quite "interesting" - for example, on separate occasions, had trench coat salesmen approaching me to peddle glade plug in air fresheners, candles, cupcakes, and (wait for it) bottles of laundry detergent. You just gotta laugh. Laugh, and then quickly busy yourself doing something else so they'll leave you alone. lol. Service is fast and friendly and the food is better than you'll find at any other coney (including National). The menu is standard, but more expansive than what I find a lot of the downtown coneys to be. They still offer the breakfasts, coneys, salads, pitas, sandwiches, and fried appetizers you'll find anywhere else, but just more of them, it seems. The salads are huge, chock full of tasty toppings, and complimented nicely by the house made ranch and side of warm pita. The coneys dogs are good, but then again I've never been a connisseur of them so most coneys all taste the same to me. Pitas...sandwiches....onion rings....I've sampled it all and it's all DELICIOUS. You can throw a rock and hit 5 coney islands from any point in Detroit, it seems, but this one is worth seeking out, fo' sho.

There were at least four employees when I arrived and one customer. I sat down and was brought water and no menu. After ten minutes without anybody coming to my table I just got up and walked out. Otherwise a charming experience.

Being from metro-Detroit, I've eaten at my fair share of Coney Island's in my time. With any Coney Island, there are always gems on the menu and also weird, disgusting food choices (i.e any seafood item, squeeze-cheese topping option, ect.) D-1 is always pretty solid, if you know what to order. My favorite things are the Greek Salad (comes with a hard-boiled egg), the fries, and the gyro-sandwich. I usually stick to these foods when I come here. If you are trying to eat healthy, go somewhere else. Depending on when you eat there, the atmosphere tends to be very "lively", especially after 2am on a friday or saturday. The decor is weird as eff, which I like. 3 stars for D-1. Not the best, but good enough

  • Michael L.

The food is decent if you are from out of town and looking for a rip-off of American or National which are the actual two Detroit coney places. Almost no one who lives in the city actually eats here because it's overpriced for a mediocre diner (which is what it is) and the service is dreadful. I'm not sure whether they pay people for positive reviews but unless having managers sexually harass and demean you while complaining about how they need a drink and accusing you of being their dad, while you desperately try to get the food that you ordered an hour ago (only to then be accused of having cancelled the order and then accused of never having made the order in the first place), is your idea of good service then you should stay away. There are dozens of better places to get a coney in the city and they don't involve dealing with the bizarre combination of living in a Kafka novel and in a neverending AA meeting that is D-1 coney. I would only eat here if I were starving, it was the last restaurant on earth, and frank wasn't working. You have been warned. I would rather eat pizza rolls because they are cheaper, taste better, and don't involve a customer service policy of accusing customers of lying and driving them to alcoholism.

I've recently moved to the neighborhood and when I was moving in, the landlord recommended this place for lunch. We didn't try it that day, but we've finally made it there now! I run past here a lot, and one of my favorite things first thing in the morning is watching the hens peck around in the side yard and listening to the rooster crow. Yeah, you read that right. It's awesome. So, INSIDE for the first time today, we were impressed. As previously reviewed, the restaurant was clean and well lit. Our server was friendly and efficient. The #1 criteria for me in a diner/coney is the fries and based on that alone, I'd give this place a 5. Crispy, lightly seasoned...yum! The boyfriend got a chicken hoagie, with a side salad (that wasn't JUST a pile of lettuce). He approved of both. I had the "Detroit #1 Special" pita sandwich...what arrived was a huge pile of marinated chicken, sautéed vegetables, with a toasted pita buried somewhere underneath. It was all delicious, including the pita once I uncovered it. We'll definitely be coming back here again, especially since we didn't see the ice cream cooler (note: THEY HAVE SUPERMAN ICE CREAM) or the cakes until we went up to pay for our meal. Two last things - Their logo looks like it's just the Spirit of Detroit...but it's actually the Spirit of Detroit holding a ketchup bottle and a coney dog. And they're open 24 hours every day except Sunday. That's something that can be hard to find around here!

There are three things this place has going for itself. They deliver downtown at odd hours of the night, serve up flaming cheese AND they raise chickens on the south side of the building. Don't worry, they are the decorative fancey type of chicken. I suspect that they are raising show birds for the four h fair. I love the logo. It's the spirit of detroit with coney dogs in the palm and a mustard bottle in the other hand. Average coney chow. Service is pleasantly bitter and swift. The crowd can be entertaining in itself, especially when the bar get out. I would put it in the category of late night hook up.

This is the most random Coney Island, but probably one of my favorites in the city of Detroit. This year after Noel Night I returned to the Detroit 1 Coney in an attempt to find a less busy restaurant to grab a quick bite before heading to a 10 o'clock showing of Love, Actually (swoon!) at the former Burton Theatre. We were completely off the mark thinking it was going to be a haven of speedy eats because the mighty expanse of Noel Night's throng knows no end. In any regard, we were able to sit and admire our surroundings. At Detroit 1 Coney your eyes will feast upon many a sight, my favorites include the puffer fish hanging from the ceiling, the framed knot collection, and a large (I'm guessing Albanian sine the restaurant features an "Albanian Omelet" and I think the owners are Albanian) folk dancer doll all mixed with cutesy food/drink art akin to what you might find at Home Goods. The menu is pretty standard though they do offer squeeze and slice options for some cheese covered items (think fries.) I think I've had breakfast cuisine every time I've been to D1C and this evening was without exception. I settled on the spinach and feta omelet, sub fries for the hash browns, and an English Muffin. I really wanted to order the jalapeño poppers and a large dish of red velvet cake ice cream (did I mention there's a full ice cream bar?) but resisted the urge thinking real food might be a better choice for the state of exhaustion I was in. My omelet was huge and filled with a lot of spinach (most likely frozen, but whatever) and feta. The fries were thicker somehow, not like wedges, but like they were fatter, and really quite fabulous. The English Muffin was sub-par, almost containing no nooks and crannies, but I don't know what I would expect from a Coney? The ketchup was in a small squeeze bottle and the jelly was Kraft (or no-name? but definitely not Smuckers). Michael Pinecone had the "Frank" Burger when was half burger half corned beef all in one crazy sandwich. It only took us about 45 minutes for our food to come, which on any other night would have been unacceptable, but considering they were really quite busy, it wasn't so bad. The service was quite polite and were very apologetic for the wait. Just for Valerie G, I will include a moment about the restroom. There was a single restroom in the back past the long hall way of single booths where a guy looked to be sleeping over a cup of coffee. All in all, I would say I've been in worse restrooms, but this wasn't the Taj Majal either, though there were several numbers to choose from on the door for a good time. . . I actually made a note that I thought it was amusing to have a granite counter with a stainless sink in this particular restroom. I know I will be back to Detroit 1 Coney because they are a reliable source of edible food and are open 24 hours mostly which is helpful after a few cocktails in the D. I will also make a note that I should expect everything remotely close to Midtown to be crazy on Noel Night.
