Friendly, quaint pub atmosphere! A wide selection of beers and many michigan selections. I highly recommend the marinated chicken breast sandwich and onion rings...very tasty

Get a pitcher of Blue moon & get your pool on! Jimmy the regular will give you a run for your money - he rules the pool table! Food is okay but environment is Great. Bring your buddies by for a drink!

I love this bar. Circa fits very nicely into a key niche if quiet friendly dive bar. In a part of town where college kids fill every bar, circa's emptiness (almost always) is a welcome condition. Cheap beer, and rotating taps that stay around a bit too long. I recommend the veggie Reuben, it's sloppy and great bar food. The bartenders are like old friends. This is place to come often and a lot. Great neighborhood dive.

Love crica. Normally not packed. Got a pool table. Bar tender is great. Also I live near by. Food is great too. Leave any pretension part of yo self at home!

I figured I should probably update with a more detailed review of this place since it's so great. My absolute favorite item to order here is the ribs. Fall of the bone deliciousness, probably the best ribs I've ever had (and I've been to Kansas City). The meat is tender and the BBQ sauce is just the right amount of sweet and tangy. If I'm coming here with a large group of friends, we like to do what we call "appetizers and pitchers". We'll all order their bite sized goodies and share them with a few (maybe several) pitchers. Regular fries, seasoned curly fries, fried mushrooms, jalapeno poppers, and onion rings. Greasy bar food at its best, and at a great price. The atmosphere is pretty good. You get your mix of hipsters, old timers, and college kids who got tired of the riff raff over at Lefty's. It's very relaxed, you'll feel at home pretty quick. Overall, this is my favorite place in Midtown to grab a drink with food. If I lived closer, this would be my home bar.

I love this place. Its a quiet bar with greasy spoon/bar menu items, great drinks. The atmosphere has two modes: quiet dive bar and filled with hipsters. This is my go-to study spot.

Friendly place but a helluva dump.

This place has a friendly vibe, great service and good food. The pizza is always yummy and the beer is always cold. When I'm feeling like pizza, and not the commercial chain cheap pizza, and I don't want fancy expensive Ottavia Via pizza, this is my go to place. The homemade secret recipe Greek dressing is one of the best vinaigrettes I have ever had. Great beer selection and fair prices, oh and they have Final Absolution, yes. The middle-aged men who are the bar "regulars" here are hilarious, if you're in an earshot of their conversation, I promise they will make you laugh.

Circa is a great dive bar. Perfect for college students to sit back and relax with a pitcher and a game of pool. The place is big enough for groups and the staff is super friendly and accommodating. Foodwise, you can't go wrong with their burger and fries, and with their drinks menu, you'll always be coming back to try something new and interesting. Prices are also very reasonable with new deals happening often. What can I say? I love this place

I loves me a good dive bar. Circa 1890 fits the bill. Located across the street from the Wayne State campus, it's a great place to drink alone, or with pals. There's an interesting mix of characters that sometimes frequent the bar, but it's usually pretty empty. The staff is friendly, the beers are cheap, and although I've never had the food, I've heard good things. It's nice to have a place to go have a drink, but not feel like you're at a meat market. I'll definitely be back.

If you like dive bars, good food, and random conversation ... This is for you. More Cass Corridor than Midtown. That sort of thing is refreshing in Detroit. Come see for yourself. Order the spinach grilled cheese. Win.

Went recently and the Circa 1890 Saloon got really cheap on what they give out or don't. Use to have free popcorn - well, that's a thing in the past. Oh well. I don't know why WSU student yelpers say it is cheap food and beer, I definitely don't find that here. Steve hits on the younger women or middle-aged women when he is as old as the Circa!!!! His daughter is very nice and friendly. Would I recommend this place, probably not unless you are very very thirsty!

Came here randomly after orientation for a graduate student pizza party. Pleasantly surprised. Go Wayne! I had a really nice Spinach and ricotta (?) pizza. Magic 8 ball on iphone foretells way too many carbs in my future upon commencement of studies.

They've got a killer grilled cheese with spinach and feta. No popcorn for the big game though? San Antonio had it and they blew it. God, I can't stand Miami!

If Wayne State is indeed "Wu Tang University," then Circa is to Wayne what Old Dirty Bastard; a.k.a. Dirt McGirt; a.k.a. Big Big Jesus, a.k.a. Old Dirty Chinese-Restaurant; was to the Wu Tang. Hoooooooooooo Hayyyyyyyyyy Ha uhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Pros: Cheap food. Cheap Beer. Usually Dead. Cons: Cheap food. Cheap Beer. Usually Dead. Tell shorty they don't even need to go to Wayne State; tell them to go to Circa 1890, and they get all the urban education they'll need this year.

The chicken tenders and curly fries are outstanding. If you need a quick lunch between classes or after work Circa can't be beat.

A run of the mill douchy Wayne State bar. The tables are sticky, the food is terrible, but the beer is cheap. woof.

i love this place! I love the good food and great service! Love their pizza with feta cheese. And the Turkey Reuben also favorite of mine.

Good beer specials, meh food, service is wildly inconsistent (from great to almost bad). This place is alright. Anyone giving it 5 stars is off their rocker. It's the kind of place to duck into if you're a Wayne student or live on Cass Ave., grab a pitcher of beer with some friends, and yak for a bit. The food is always FINE but unimpressive, but they will throw in a tomato into your grilled cheese, which suits me just fine. If you get there when it's empty, there's a decent chance you get good service - meaning, you will be served. On busier nights, servers are off on their own mission (the little follow-Billy's-trail versions of the Family Circus cartoon suddenly springs to mind). Everyday of the week offers some kind of food/beer pitcher/wells special, and that's what brings the rating up from a 2 to a 3. (well, that, and maybe also that they have MORE THAN ONE jackalope hanging from the walls... which is as amazing as it is hilarious. Don't know what a jackalope is? Well, pop into Circa for a pint and find out) Final caveat, like ALL bars on Cass Ave, for whatever reason, there seems to be ZERO ventilation. You will smell like a cigarette french fry when you are done.

Circa. Steve's spot, but Lela is the one who keeps the place going... Why is this place so great? Its simple really, the familiy owned bar is a total dive which means the drinks are cheap and the food is delicious. Forget the other reviews... Heres what you need to know about Circa... First of all the chicken wings are amazing and the curly fries are second to none. Second, anything on the menu that is greek is, in fact, greek. Steve and his family know what they're doing and they're not pulling your chain when they say they've got the best spinach and feta in town. Third, their pizza is crazy good. Sometimes its the best pizza on the planet other times its the second best pizza on the planet, but it takes a little while for it to cook... well worth the wait. They make their own dough from scratch, and they got all the toppings you can imagine. Their pizza is better than Motor City Brewing if you know what ingredients to ask for. (I'm a big fan of the spinach and feta, or else I get bacon and pineapple) Oh and did I mention this place is a bar? They've got every beer under the sun (in bottles) and a killer selection of draft beers. Unfortunately they no longer carry Blatz because the distributor pulled the plug on that, but they have PBR instead at the same price so it's all good ($4.50 a pitch are you kidding me??). NOW THEY HAVE OBERON BOTTLES AND GHETTOBLASTER!!! Ghettoblaster is probably the best beer on the planet, it might even be the best beer in the entire galaxy. This place has a lot of character, and characters... A group of guys are in there almost every day playing darts and the loser has to take a lap around the place with a sign that says, you guessed it, "loser," and has to collect change to pay for the next game. Best of all, they've got four tv's in there now, so forget lefty's.

A dive bar's dive bar. Popular with Wayne State students--it's practically on campus, it's definitely unpretentious and low-key. The food is ok, the beer is cheap, and the service, like most dive bars, ranges wildly--anywhere from reasonably good to "how is it possible you make any money as a server?" But if you're a poor Wayne State student looking for a place to eat or drown your sorrows after an exam, this place will do (trust me, I've been there :-))

  • Sherri T.

Half pitchers of Blatz for $3.50 all day every day. (Aarrggh! They just raised the price to $3.75! What the flying cat?) Review over. That's all you need to know. Hahahahaha. I love this place! It's right by Wayne State University, & the prices are freakin' cheap as heck! One day recently, I had 4-$1 PBRs on special, 1-$1.50 glass of Blatz after the PBR special ended, popcorn for .50, & a $2.99 grilled cheese on rye with two huge dill spears. My grand total with tax came to less than $10! Come on! 5 beers & a sandwich for less than $10? I felt like a bandit in Circa 1890! I met my husband there after work one day. Pitchers were on special for $1 off their regular price. We ordered 2 full pitchers of Blatz for merely $4.50 a piece! It was a steal! This place isn't for yellow bellied cowards. This place is for serious dive bar lovers who appreciate cheap beer, greasy food, & and great conversation. Sit at the bar if you like the latter. If you like fancy beers, they have some of those too. However, you've gotta respect a place with Blatz on tap.

A rather short and simple review. Went once, relatively unimpressed, general bar food. Surprisingly the Greek salad dressing was quite good. But all in all ehhh, it was ok. Returned this weekend, we ordered drinks, the waitress warning us not to to get the house vodka, so we upgraded... then we waited, and waited, and waited...drinks never came, waitress never returned and we left. Hmmmmm would say to go elsewhere where your business is appreciated or at least, acknowledged.

Nice little dive on the Cass Corridor on Wayne State University's campus.. typical old bar vibe but really good food... Have been here a number of times and have never walked out of there with a bad meal. The prices are pretty affordable and the staff is friendly.. Certainly a regular spot to grab a bite when I'm in the area!

Located on the Wayne State University campus in downtown Detroit, this saloon restaurant has definitely seen better days. While the pool tables are still put to good use, the food is now only adequately prepared, the wine selection extremely limited (like, a red and a white), and mixed drink orders apparently confused the guy who called himself the bartender. Probably best for already buzzed pizza-n-pitcher students.

I will keep this short. I am a student at Wayne and visit Circa frequently. In my position (a poor student), Circa is a bit pricey for what you get. I rarely get out of there with a bill under $14, which includes a sandwich and some beers. However, for anyone with a job, Circa is probably pretty cheap. Regarding the food, its pretty good. The beer selection is limited, but they do have Blatz, which is kind of cool. All around, Circa is not that bad of a place to grab lunch or a couple of beers.

My husband is a classy guy so he took me here for our first date. We frequented this spot when we lived in the dorms as well(every Monday and Thursday night). It's not the most amazing food, but it's good on a cold September night. I'm a meat snob and even I think their mushroom and swiss burgers are pretty excellent. Circa lost a star because they charge for refills on soda- I don't know why, but it annoys me when restaurants practice this policy.

I love Circa. I have been coming here for a few years now. The food is great, one of the only places I know I can get a chicken patty on a bun!! Its nothing fancy, but I'm not usually a fan of fancy. The prices are cheap in my opinion, and the services is always friendly.

I have yet to pop in on Circa when it's packed so maybe I'm biased, but I like this place. The staff is friendly and they bring you your beer quickly. I was told by my brother (a Wayne student) that the pizza here is great, and he was right. I loved it and I'd definitely get it again. It's cheesy and they shred a lot of the toppings, which I love. It's a great place for pizza and a beer since they have a lot of specials like free toppings or $1 off pitchers. The music isn't playing ungodly loud, it's typical "saloon" style music and reminds me of Chicago for some reason. I like it. It's a good place to chill out on a weekend night. They also have a nice area to play darts and pool. Works for me.

The amount of money I've thrown at this place is mind-boggling. And for good reason; I'd crawl to Circa on bloody stumps before I went to Cass Cafe! Circa's the best dive around WSU campus, period. Drink prices are super cheap (if you really want to slum it, Black Labels for $2. Otherwise around $3...) and the food is reasonably priced. I will say that Circa has the best "bar" food ever. I've eaten just about everything that Circa sells, and it's all good. I mean, it's ALL good, including the salads and soups. Who comes to a bar to eat salad? Me! But before anything else, try the pizza. It's not some frozen pizza that's kept in a fridge for 10 years waiting for someone to buy it; all hand-tossed and fresh. It's a good thing that Circa's around, because most of the pizza places on campus are either cardboard pizza sellers or just plain bad. Order carry-out at Circa, for the love of cheese! I've actually never had a problem with slow service except between lunch and dinner; at that time, they have one bartender and one waitress, but during other times (say, past 6 or so) they have two or three waitresses on the floor. It's not big, so it's not very hard to make an order. How do I know this? I go back to my original statement: the amount of money I've thrown at this place is mind-boggling... If you're in there, say hello to Joe and Jasmine; they're awesome and always take good care of their people!

This is the campus bar for Wayne State. Generation after generation the student body of Wayne State University has been grabbing beers after, before (and some while they should) be in class. But with a poor student budget who wouldn't like the prices at Circa? Located on Warren Avenue by Ferry Street, Circa Saloon is a fantastic place to grab a drink in the heart of Detroit. This dive bar also offers food, which I would strongly advise against, but the atmosphere is great for drinking: friendly staff, great jukebox and cheap beer. I'm sold. The crowd that flocks to Circa range from medical school students to the art type, so you never know what you're going to get. But this mix of patrons is what makes the Circa experience even that much more great. So, go to class and then unwind from the abnormal psychology class over a brew at Circa.

  • Heather Z.

Grab some friends and get a pitcher at this cozy little bar. The service is great and the atmosphere is quiet. On the weekends you can expect a nice student crowd, the jukebox gets turned up, and you can see a lively crowd playing darts and pool.

I used to go there when I was at Wayne State up until 1994, I would see many of my professors there. Great place to have an impromptu meeting with your professor, over a drink. It was always good for the grades to get your Prof. drunk. Great to see this institution is still going strong. The food was average but affordable on a student's budget. Their Long Island ice tea will lift your hair up. There used to be a little store on the corner next door that would sell fresh hard boiled eggs and a pack of crackers for a quarter - great student budget food. However the eggs with the beer could become a lethal combination gastronomically. I will stop in again (been almost twenty years) and write a better review.

I love dive bars. The special thing about this place is that not only is it a dive bar, but the food doesn't want to make you retch up your cheap whiskey drink.

An eclectic mix of people: professionals, students, artists, and locals all converge here for inexpensive drinks, and awesome bar food. A pizza is where it's at. You can leave here with a new best friend and a little buzz.

I've always had a good time here, a good place to take a date, your friends, family, whatever. They have very reasonable prices and the crowd is usually pretty great. I did get some bad chicken here once and the waiter replaced it right away (although I feel like I should have just not had to pay), so I'd just inspect your meat before you eat.

This is a perfect 'hole in the wall' bar. It's dark, smoky, and there is a pool table. The food and the prices are great and the population is diverse. Also, the staff is friendly. Going to Circa in between classes was one of the highlights of my undergraduate experience. It's definitely great for students. Parking can be annoying but it's downtown Detroit.

Surprisingly tasty thin crust pizza. Can't say much more about the place because I ate it for free during the daytime for a WSU event.

Used to come here back in the college days. Just a quick walk from CCS. Nothing too special. I agree with one reviewer good for those with a 'poor student budget'.

Local Wayne State U watering hole. Decent bar food, slow service, but cheap. I guess you can't expect much from a bar that mainly serves college students.

Remember many a night guzzling down pitchers of beer after a grad seminar and as an undergrad (was over 21 by that time folks). Food was good for the price, service prompt, people pretty cool. I also remember a great jukebox.

Okay, so first off, this is one of the few places close to the law school to get a drink or a bite to eat on campus (Wayne State). I have a love-hate relationship with this place. It's definitely a dive. It's dark. It's smelly. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's dirty, but it's no five-star saloon. But, the entire staff, especially the owner, is incredibly friendly. The drinks are way cheap. The food is actually really good. Whether you want a salad or chicken fingers or greasy pizza, you'll actually enjoy whatever you order. They have great beer specials, but can also make any shot you ask for. Circa has been kind enough to host many law school parties (yes we even have law school keggers sponsored by the school) and post-exam celebrations, but I like to drop in on my own from time to time as well. I especially love the bloody mary taking a bloody mary lunch break when it's been a long week!
