Airy, soothing, refreshing, arousing, these are just some of the words that come to mind when I think of Chartreuse. Ambience 5: The walls are painted with an effervescent lime green. There are drooping plants, and reminiscent paintings caressing the walls. It's open but there is a lovely bar area to enjoy the drinks, take in the sounds, and watch artists delicately craft your meal. Food/Spirits 5: The food was stupendous. The twice cooked eggs are nothing short of breathtaking. The recovery park salad, spare ribs, and salmon were all divine. When I completed my repast, I was full, but not heavy, similar to a resplendent hot air balloon on a fall day. I was so completely engrossed in my meal and atmosphere, my drink orders have slipped my mind. Service 5: I had amazing service from very generous and knowledgeable sous chefs. As stated, I sat at the bar and felt like I was a part of the entire experience. Overall it was a perfect dinner and a sensual experience.

The decor in here is indeed chartreuse, but it washes over you in a very pleasant manner. The live succulent wall, the dried flowers hanging, the plush and stylish high backed sofas in the lounge... it all lends itself to a very pleasant and elegant decor while still being fun and welcoming. We were promptly greeted and seated by the hostess. When we got there at 6 it was pretty dead, but by the time we left it was hopping, so you might want to consider making reservations. The waitstaff was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to assist in whatever you needed. Marc Anthony, our waiter, did a fantastic job of making sure we had everything we needed as did the rest of the staff. I started off with the improved gimlet, and my mom got the last word. We both enjoyed our cocktails, but agreed that mine was better. I'm excited to talk about the food, but I'm afraid I won't be able to do it justice! We started off with the smoked skuna bay salmon, spring pea ricotta, and heirloom tomato soup. The skuna salmon was ample and atop slightly carmelized grilled cornbread, cevre, and accompanied by pepper jelly. The sweet, smoky, and spicy all came together well and was a combination I never would have thought to put together. The spring pea ricotta was whipped ricotta with spring peas, pickled ramps, lemon, and olive oil poached tomato. While it was interesting and tasty, it was my least favorite dish. My mom, however, just about attacked me over it. I'll chalk that up to me not being over the moon about olives. The heirloom tomato soup was thick and savory with chunks of feta and a basil olive oil. Without the feta I would have said the soup was underseasoned, but when you took a bite of it all together it married beautifully and balanced out. We thought that getting the watermelon salad would be something good for a dessert like dish, and it turned out to be my favorite thing of the night. Not only did the watermelon and cantaloupe cubes look beautiful topped with fresh basil, mint, feta, thinly sliced peppers and red onion, and honey, but it tasted like heaven. I'm normally not a huge sweet and salty person, but the freshness of the herbs combined with the different flavors and textures made for a transcendent dish. Finally, we didn't realize they had a dessert menu, but we heard about the milk and cookies from our waiter and had to try it out. It was double chocolate cookies with flaked sea salt that were crispy but also chewy and still warm paired with a roasted pecan milk and espresso. It was a perfect ending to our evening, but then as a birthday treat they brought out an aperitif for us. It was herby and left the most incredible palate feeling/taste. Thank you for making my birthday so special!!

Have been here four or five times. We've stopped in for a drink at the bar and have also stopped in late just for the donuts. We've also eaten full dinner several times. We have had great service and great food every time. We love the Twice Cooked Egg, Recovery Park (no matter what it is) and the Duck. And, of course, the Donuts are a must have. It's really nice that you can make reservations online and also that you can eat at the bar or in the couch waiting area. I recommend this restaurant often and will continue to visit regularly.

The only question we should really ever ask ourselves once we leave is, would we come back? Was the experience worth a second or third visit....or was it so good that we shamelessly plug it to all our friends?! I would definitely need to come back before I reach the latter, but I also definitely want to come back! For a Wednesday at 6:40 it was really empty but be aware that it picks up around 8ish midweek. We were sat straight away for our reservation (I love that they take reservations), and immediately the décor kind of washes over you. The green walls, the dried hanging herbs and flowers, the distressed wood tables and bar chairs, the clean tint to everything in sight. It's fair to say that I really liked the aesthetics of Chartreuse but the food was even that much more interesting and satisfying. I started with a Sazerac cocktail. Sorry to say but I would NOT order that again. I probably should've opted for their Gangs of New York Sour but I missed it on the menu. That said, I always order Sazeracs because I know that they're tough to make right. If they had blown me away with my cocktail I would be giving them that last star and I'd be touting them as high as Wright and Co. The one and only real gripe I have about this spot is that their bar is strangely limited in options. There was no spirits' list to buffer the server that didn't seem to know what they stocked behind the bar. Also, I'm not a wine connoisseur but the list by the glass was small and nondescript but they do offer BYOB for a $20 corking fee, FYI. The food, however, was unmistakably and resoundingly fantastic! Small plates will always draw me in and when they're done this well it'll bring me back again and again. We began with the Twice Cooked Egg, the Sweet Pea and Ricotta and the Grilled Spanish Octopus. Table service is FAST so order as you eat since turnaround times are probably ten minutes or less. The Twice Cooked Egg was easily the second favorite dish of the night. A bed of frisee and roasted Brussel's sprout with a caramelized shallot vinaigrette combines as a nest for the headliner...a medium cooked egg that's then been panko coated and deep fried perfectly, so that the yolk runs into the dressing and tightens up all the flavors in the salad. I'm not sure how they make this...sous vide before the fryer maybe, but it's ridiculously good! The Sweet Pea Ricotta is akin to a white bruschetta with a really fresh and bright pea puree and a cherry tomato to compliment the flavors from the olive bread, the lemon and the pickled scallion...my third favorite dish of the evening. The grilled octopus was charred and while it was really tender and perfectly cooked the dish wasn't my speed. The cucumber, fennel and pickled onion added a little acidity but it needed more. The chorizo was a nice touch....I wonder what it would've been like had it been ground and sprinkled over the salad? The entrée we split was the Cap Steak. I can't even tell you how much I loved this dish!!! The steak was grilled to a perfect medium rare as requested, and then sliced into small thin 1/2 medallions, laid over roasted cippolini onions, garlic cloves, squash, oyster mushrooms and haricot vert all resting in a punchy chermoula sauce so good that I couldn't resist adding a little to each bite I took. You'll want to order this!! And I'm going to start making chermoula today! The menu is a little small but I have good reason to come back...to try ALL of it. Service from the kitchen was fantastic...quick, concise, polite and friendly. While our server was pretty solid, she seemed to be a little new? She didn't know what the bar had to offer and didn't have much to interject about their menu. She was really nice though and she had her hands full so she gets a pass. All that said, I'm looking forward to coming back...perhaps I'll bring some wine and few more friends so they can enjoy the food as much as I did. It's definitely worth trying and a nice date spot for sure.

If I could only choose one thing to eat from Chartreuse it would have to be the twice cooked egg. Most recently my friends and I ordered a plate each of the twice cooked egg. Was it enough? No. I hungrily eyed their plates hoping they had something, anything leftover that I could snag but alas, their plates were as clean as mine.

I want to say that I am tired of writing great reviews for new Detroit restaurants but I am not. I am very excited for it, and so damn happy to see this change. Chartreuse hits on all levels. From calling in to find out about table availability, friendly and courteous. To getting in and getting seated, everyone greets you and is glad you are there. And look around the place beautiful colors and that plant wall art is awesome. The bar portion cannot be overlooked especially with the ties to The Oakland. The cocktails are well thought out and very, very good. The Food- I suppose we should talk about the food. Not sure I want to highlight anything in particular as I have been there twice now and tried a lot of the menu items and each and every item was great. I am not a big salad person but that watermelon salad is so awesomely refreshing and tasty. We have been watching gluten these days and there are several gluten free items available for the regular items, not so much for the desserts. So yes, Go, Go now. Thanks Chartreuse for the great things you are doing.

My friend suggested we go to Chartreuse as a part of restaurant week and what an awesome choice it was. I loved everything about it. From the beautiful decor with the oversized couches in the lounge/bar area to the beautiful paintings that accented the brightly colored walls. The food and presentation was absolutely amazing! I had the laughing bird and octopus salad, the braised short ribs with tomato grits and the lemon pound cake for dessert. I would recommend all three to anyone and I am already planning to go back soon!

There's a rustic, cool, hippy vibe as you walk through the door. It feels like a place you can just lay back and hang with your friends all night. The menu is similar to a "farm to table" kinda of approach. A lot of their items are sourced locally and they serve whatever is in season. So you know your're getting the freshest, tastiest, most wholesome stuff. I will go on record and say this is probably ONE OF THE BEST MEALS I HAVE EVER HAD! We ordered the Recovery Park which is a platter of in-season greens and vegetables cooked in a variety of ways. Let me tell you this is almost indescribably good! These words are insane coming from a meat and potatoes kinda guy like me. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better? TWICE COOKED EGG - OMG; this thing ruined me. Lightly battered egg, deep fried to golden perfection with a liquidy yolk inside; all on top of a fresh, crisp salad tossed in a "to die for" shallot dressing. I would down a dozen of these if I could. Order at least 5 per person if you can. They have done the impossible I think. If this is the kind of stuff I have to eat to be a vegetarian (which I am far, far from being one) I would reluctantly oblige. This place is a must visit.

Detroit has become one of my favorite cities for a good meal and Chartreuse is part of the reason. The drinks: They try way too hard. To be cool and different. Options were not great. They don't have coke or pepsi. They make their own Cola (I think coke has the recipe down), the cola wasn't good- tasted like Sugar water. The food and service on the other hand, were great. The appetizers that were my favorite are the twice cooked egg and the recovery park. The best way to describe them is 'refreshing'. We had to order 2 of the Twice cooked Eggs. They were different then any other appetizer i've had, but so delicious. The sauce on the Spare Ribs is Perfect.

This is my new FAVORITE restaurant! Omg the cap steak was awesome the bread and garlic butter the best and the Rosemary daiquiri eeek yummy goodness! The hubby had the midtown Manhattan, the whitefish and twice cooked egg. He likes runny yolk - I don't but I did taste the bed of veggies it was on and it was superb! The Brussels sprouts and bean sprouts were grrrreeeaaat! The sweet dressing made the dish! We also had the green and yellow chartreuse! I liked the yellow hubby liked the green. The staff is so friendly - we will definitely be back! Many many times!

Great atmosphere and decor! Although I went for Detroit Restaurant Week (which is a 3 course meal!) I wish I could have tried half the menu! :)

I've only been here once, but I foresee a lot of future visits that will consist of me ordering 4 plates of "Twice Cooked Eggs", and nothing else. Because....YES. That oozy, delicately battered egg. Those crispy, flavorful brussels sprouts. That warm shallot vinaigrette that had the most perfect balancce of citrus and sweet. The pea shoots. OMG, the Everything! Hi fricking five, Chartreuse! I almost licked the plate. Somebody below mentioned that it was a small, appetizer for the price. Yeah, it was not huge, but this is not Texas, and DAMN, it was BEAUTIFULLY made and delicious. Seriously, YOU try deep-frying a poached egg.

Very good first impression on me! What I realized about this restaurant after walking inside was the decor. The feeling is of a casual atmosphere where one can go for drinks and a good meal that won't bog you down. The green and yellow accents really bring out that airiness to the room. We were seated promptly per our reservation time and greeted by our waitress quite quickly. Over the course of the dinner, me and two of the other people seated each had 2 drinks. All their drinks are extremely well executed. Their version of the Manhattan is excellent and was probably my favorite drink there. The last word is my wife's favorite and it did taste excellent. And the last one I can comment on is the version of the whiskey sour, which was interestingly made and well balanced. You really can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu. The four of us shared 4 small plates and each got one large plate. All dishes really quite delicious. For the small plate lamb poke, I have to admit that I had never known that lamb could be served raw, but I was surprised to see how delicious it was. The spiced chip that gave with it was good vehicle for it as well. We shared two desserts, the donut plate and the pudding. They sound simple but I'm sure much thought and consideration. Very well done Chartruese. Another great establishment to add to the Detroit food scene. Keep up the good work!

Couldn't be any better. Interior is beautiful: there is a living wall of plants and a wall of hanging colorful dried flowers. The food consists of small portions meant to be shared, which is ideal, because everything is delicious so you will want to try it all. Menu is divided into "Hot," "Cold," and "Vegetables." I tried selections from all three and was never disappointed. The desserts (tried both: pound cake and donuts) were amazing. I love this new addition to midtown.

I love this place. We tried it 2 weeks after it opened, & it was already running like a well-oiled machine. I'm sure this is due to owner Sandy Levine's experience in running The Oakland, but still a huge feat in a restaurant's infancy. Interior is fresh & vibrant. The succulent wall is beautiful. Great location right by the DIA. Lots of people there which did not deter the attentiveness of our server. SO happy they decided to start taking rezzies & online is even more convenient. If you park in the deck, you can have your parking validated at the Park Shelton desk. My fave drink is the improved gimlet-- vodka, lime, honey, chartreuse. Good beers on the menu & decent wine list. Three magic words for you: Twice Cooked Egg. Don't share it. Get your own. You won't be sorry. The brussels & warm shallot vinaigrette are like a taste explosion, & the egg (solid white & runny yolk, with like a panko type coating) make for a wonderfully flavorful app/salad. The spring pea ricotta was good. Very fresh tasting. Love all the lively & local flavors. The first time we went, I ordered a salmon special. It was delish. Second time, I ordered the Alaskan Halibut with nectarine chutney, bacon vinaigrette, crispy fennel. Also delish, but I would've preferred a little more of the contrasting flavors as the fish was so mild & mellow. Still loved though. Too full for dessert, but all selections sounded amazing. May have to return just for dessert! Love this place

Nice place. Very unique menu. Food was different than I am used to but found all dishes to be pretty pleasant. The duck confit was great! The lamb poke was something that everyone would like and share. There are a lot of options now in detroit but I would visit this place again!

Second time: still 4.5 stars I would say. Loved the ribs so much that I ordered them again, but they were not as good as the first time. My husband raved about the duck confit. We also love the egg there, and the pea ricotta was really good. I would skip the watermelon salad tho. We had the same waitress and she was great! Definitely a must-try on the Detroit restaurant scene.

Chartreuse...I have never had the liquor and this was my first time to the spot! I am very glad I went. It is definitely another great addition to the Detroit dining scene. They have a number of great small plate selections (perfect for sharing) and some larger plates too! Everything was well prepared and brought out in a timely manner. All flavor profiles were excellent and executed nicely. The dishes are unique and not the same old thing. By the way, the cocktails were great. You really can not go wrong here. When the road construction on Woodward easy up I suspect it will have more street traffic. It is slightly hard to see now, but really put in the effort to go here.

So I feel as if I should change the rest of my 5-stars to 4. We loved Chef Doug when he was at Terry B's but what's going on here is even more spectacular. Recovery Park. I could eat it all day every day. Then there was a dish with a twice cooked egg on top that had Brussel sprouts....which I really don't like and I LOVED it. They were sweet and the salad was perfect. I also had the Grouper. Which was perfect. My Husband had a watermelon salad that he's talking about three days later. And the ribs which he's thinking he has to figure out how to duplicate. Don't think twice. It's the best restaurant I've been to.

Cute, fresh decor and great service! This would be a great place for people who like to people watch or for a fun first date. The food here is like nothing I've ever experienced, and the combinations of flavors are phenomenal! I can see why this place has gotten rave reviews! I ordered the watermelon salad, which was very light and refreshing, and had the salmon. It was the perfect serving size, and had such amazing flavor! I also got to try a bit of the twice cooked egg and brussel sprouts from my friend's plate, and was very pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the brussel sprouts - it was completely mind-blowing how good it was and unlike any brussel sprouts I've ever had! I can't say enough good things about this place, but if you are in the area, Chartreuse is definitely a must try! It's a shame that I'm from California, and can't come back more often! Sorry... I was so excited about this place that I couldn't help myself from ending almost every sentence with an exclamation mark.

Swung in here for a hotly anticipated dinner during a recent swing through some recently opened Detroit spots. Had experienced Chef Hewitt's cooking before at Terry B's and have a built in bias towards the fantastic cocktail den of the Oakland, but this is an utterly fantastic addition to the downtown Detroit dining scene. Loved the interior makeover, with ample attention paid to the inviting looking green sofas and lounge area. Living wall was striking. Ended up ordering a few of the cocktails, including my current favorite (Last Word). What else to expect at a place called Chartruese? Ordered the octopus, spring vegetable Caesar and roasted salmon as an entrée. Octopus had great flavor, but was slightly tough (sole criticism of the entire evening, and a slight one at that). Vegetable Caesar was the best thing I had all evening. Absolutely amazing and I was ready to order seconds as soon as I put my fork down. Salmon was cooked perfectly with complicated, yet distinct pairings. Split some dulce de leche donuts for dessert that finished what the savory courses started. All told, expectations were certainly exceeded and I would put in squarely in the top 3-4 restaurants I've experienced in Detroit.

I took some friends here from out of town, they were very happy with my selection of eateries. This is one of my favorite restaurants! Today I ordered the smoked salmon club, and it was exceptional. Staff is extremely attentive and into their food. This was my second time here, and my first visit was just as positive. This place is a must try!

The atmosphere was energetic and loved the decor. The food choices on the "restaurant week" menu were good and I tried 2 things that were new to me, very good. And the whitefish entree was amazing! Let's not forget the cocktail that was recommended, yummy!

Spring Caesar featured beautiful local ingredients but overwhelmed fresh peas with incredibly gamy lamb bacon cubes. Wish I could have tasted those little veggies. Ramen is called "dashi" which is like calling boeuf bourgoignon "broth." Too big to finish. It didn't know what ethnicity it wanted to be: it is impossible to improve ramen, which is already a perfect dish. The best thing was dessert-vanilla pudding--which was oddly large, too much for two to finish, but had a nice creamy texture and a lavender biscuit, which didn't have that much flavor. I have no idea why this restaurant has such a high score because it isn't nearly as good as One Eyed Betty's, Selden Standard, or even Mani in Ann Arbor. Normally I do not care about service unless the food is terrible too and servers are overtly standing around not even trying. Service was sincere but seemed disorganized; everything took longer than it should have even though the place was half full and everyone seemed to be working hard.

My boyfriend and I LOVED this restaurant. From the decor and colors to do the delicious food, everything was perfect. Our server was friendly and helpful, and they brought the food out so fast! One of the best things about this place was that we got four dishes, cleaned our plates, and didn't feel heavy at the end. That perfectly full feeling. We ordered the watermelon salad, which was to die for. I think it was my favorite dish that we had. The twice baked egg was good, I don't like runny yoke so I worked around it. I do wish it had more Brussel sprouts because they were so yummy and that was the only menu item that had them. We also ordered the lamb poke. The combination of lamb, avocado, and mango on the sweet potato chili chip was so smooth and creative. And then there was the Michigan shrimp with mussels and some really good bread. Seriously amazing. Make sure you soak up the sauce with the bread...such great favors! We are so glad we made this stop while we were here in Detroit. So yummy.

The twice cooked egg and the cap steak were unbelievable. The saffron butter on the cap steak was the perfect touch.

Beautiful interior. Delightful staff. I had the grilled octopus and the watermelon salad. They were so pretty I almost did not want to eat them. I even had to have dessert. I cannot say enough good about the food and homemade sodas. Only negatives. ..no takeout and slightly slow delivery to table. It will make it a rare treat for me.

Holy small plate goodness. O.M.G. My mouth, it's still salivating from the amazing amazing experience I had last Saturday at chartreuse. So, my buddy took a shot at trying to book a reservation to the joint, not sure if it was even open yet. Luckily enough, the hostess informed him that was it still under "soft opening" time, but that they would love to have the four of us. Very cool. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like family. The hostess and wait staff could not have been friendlier!!! And don't even get me started on the decor. It's simply breathtaking. From the rustic chairs at the bar, to the amazing floral arrangements on the walls... Chartreuse did such a great job win the design. Our group basically ordered everything off the menu! Some of the items I loved most were: 1. The grilled octopus- it was so frickin amazing! The right amount of citrus.. The right amount of grilled smokiness- just the most amazing combo of flavors. 2. Twiced cooked egg- haaaa! So amazing with those Brussels sprouts! Like who would think of those together?!?!? So amazing! I also remember the filet was amazing and so were the ribs! Gosh my mind is drawing a blank on everything else we had, but trust me when I say... Just get everything! Ok that's all.. Enjoy :)

Great food and service. Wonderful addition to Detroit eating scene. We sampled many appetizers and shared. Don't miss the twice-cooked eggs or the spring pea ricotta. The wine and drink choices are wonderful. If you are a Foodie - try this place out.

Just finishing up a fantastic meal here now. I'm visiting from Chicago, and while I'm dining solo, I'm texting all of my friends with Detroit connections telling them they need to try this place. Fabulous cocktail options (I only tried the Improved Gimlet, as it's well before 5pm), great homemade sodas (thumbs up to both the strawberry rosemary and the honey cardamom), and the menu options were fresh and very tasty. Add to that a beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff and a pretty good song rotation, and it was an ultra-nice experience after a long bus ride.

Possibly my favorite restaurant in Detroit right now. The atmosphere is perfect for date night or going out with friends. Part and parcel was perfect and the bouza red wine was to die for. We got multiple things to eat but my favorite were the twice cooked egg and the steak. At least get these two when you are there next. Thank you for a wonderful night.

What a great experience we had at Chartreuse! I have many food allergies and our server took the time to go over every individual item on the menu to discuss if they could make it safe for me to eat. I felt very safe eating there. The ambiance was bright and cheery and I loved the dried flower art hanging all around the restaurant. My favorite dishes were the Watermelon Salad and the Twice Baked Egg Salad with Brussels Sprouts. The place was tidy and the staff worked very well together to provide a very pleasing experience. We will be going back for sure.

Disappointing to say, I would like to mention the good before laying out the bad. Good: hostess was friendly, polite and attentive, I asked her for the wifi password and she politely got it. Bad: the wifi did not work for the almost 30 minutes I was there. Backdrop: prior to coming for my first time, I had an exchange of comments on their social media posting. Once I realized they were the same establishment that my friend had a horrible experience at I became hesitant to try and CLEARLY told them I am hesitant. I would also like to mention that social media is a powerful review tool. I was seated at the bar myself and waited for someone, anyone to acknowledge me and that did not occur. Several other people were seated after me and were introduced by their servers. I sat at the bar and waited for someone, it was about 10 minutes later that a female bar staff asked me if I have been helped yet. She asked what I wanted, that should have been a clear sign of the business I managed. If you realize that a server has not come to a patron, you correct and address. I have never here before, and will not return. She seemed eager to take my order, yet I did not know or was not explained any of the food items. I ordered the "twice baked egg"...this is by far the worse appetizer I have ever ordered. I needed to take a break for two days before writing this review, I was livid at the menu item for lack of taste, lack of ingredient and lack of description. Not only was I annoyed that I gave them a heads up I am coming in, I was treated(lack there of ) without any regard. The "Twice baked egg" was not worth the 7.48 they charge you. It was 1 soft boiled egg, coated in a tasteless breading that was served upon wilted greens with not EVEN A FULL BRUSSEL SPROUT, I am not kidding there were only 3 1/4 cut pieces of brussel sprout. WTHeck, you mean to tell me I wait almost 25 minutes for this and on top of all that I was asked THREE times how good is my food...not at all. I left a tip in the hopes the nice hostess got it, nothing too much but she was really polite and smiled.

This place is awesome and actually pretty affordable. We got the spare ribs, Michigan shrimp, smoked salmon app and Caesar. The smoked salmon app was by far the best. Everything was prepared with detail and tasted great. The atmosphere is really cool. I will be back very soon!

Cute interiors with fresh farm vegetable displays. As for food... 4-5 dishes are good between two to share. Heavy on gin cocktails a plus for me. For food, the poached eggs and lamb tartare were good and the Japanese noodle was solid. Overall the food was good but nothing amazing. We had a friendly hostess and enjoyed the atmosphere. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come again. Highly recommended you make reservations, they were pretty packed on a weekday when I was there.

Top tier culinary wizardry. You will be incredibly satisfied when you leave, even though the portions are small. The flavors and seasonings are perfectly combined. Price $10-25 without alchohol, $20+ with. I had the Recovery Park selection, which was a vegetable dish that changes depending on what was being grown at the nearby Recovery Park garden/greenhouse: toasted sourdough, goat cheese, red + yellow beet, young carrot, greens, wild strawberry, cashew Incredible

My family of 4 just had dinner there. I can't overstate the ambience and service we experienced was exceptional. Celebrated my son's 18th birthday and I must say we appreciated the warmth of everyone there the moment we entered in the restaurant. We split the Lamb Poke, Grilled Spanish Octopus and Twice Cooked Egg as starters. A++++ Entrees included 2 Michigan Shrimp, 1 Duck Confit and the Grilled Cap Steak (medium rare). A++++ We couldn't resist desserts - 3 Housemade Donuts (yes, donuts!!!) and 1 Lemon Poundcake ....... all winners in our book. A++++ If you had a single choice, go for the Twice Cooked Egg as your starter and any of the entrees won't disappoint you. Their mission statement - to provide high quality meals from local fresh ingredients This is a happening place to be at.

It was my first time visiting Chartreuse for Detroit Restaurant Week and it was everything I was hoping for. They sat my fiance and I at a nice romantic table by a window, candlelit dinner, and the 3 course full they served was AMAZING from start to finish. Wonderful chef and Staff !!

What a treat! The food was absolutely delicious! But even nicer than the food was the service. Every person was friendly and really on top of their game, though it all seemed effortless. Apparently they didn't get the memo that the staff of a trendy, foodie restaurant should be snobbish and condescending because every person was lovely, smiley, attentive and seemed genuinely pleased to have patrons and enthusiastic to serve them from this truly fabulous menu. It's also very reasonably priced and locally sourced which our delightful server was jazzed to explain, but not in a snotty way. She just seemed really proud of the food and rightly so. My only regret is that I couldn't try everything! Can't wait to go back and bring 12 people so we can order everything on the menu:)

We stopped in to Chartreuse on Saturday night without reservations and were able to sit at the bar (there were four of us.) We sat with the view of the kitchen and saw the dishes being plated, which I loved watching! Our drinks were delish--I ordered the part and parcel. It was refreshing and slightly sweet. We ordered a handful of dishes and split them, which is the best way to eat in my opinion! We had the twice cooked egg (my favorite), the recovery park special, the potatoes, the split pea ricotta, the red cabbage, and later the donuts for dessert. Seriously, EVERYTHING was fantastic. Every vegetable on our plate was cooked to perfection and was flavorful in its own right. I have nothing critical to say about anything we ate. In fact, I've been thinking about our meal every day since then and I look forward to going back with my husband so he can experience it, too! Also, the waitstaff was super nice and on top of things and I loved the wall of succulents. Five stars for sure!

I was staying at a hotel one block from Chartreuse, so I stopped in for dinner. The wine, soup, and shrimp/mussels were excellent, and the service was great!

Was really impressed by my experience at Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails. We were all very satisfied with our drinks and my request to change one of the signature cocktails was made without question. Our server was polite and happy to share suggestions and to tell us about the restaurant and chef. The menu had really good variety and provided something for everyone. He standout dishes for me were the sweet pea ricotta and the twice cooked egg. The cap steak was a big hit as well. I think the duck confit could use one more element, a spicy or acidic green would be great. Overall the environment added to the experience and it's a great mix of comforting, contemporary, and exciting. By sharing small plates you are able to get more intimate with your dinner party. That I love. Sandy and Doug nice job I'm excited to see the progression of the place!

This soft opening was deeply satisfying beginning to end. The lounge area is so inviting that if it were just my hubs and I, we would have asked to have our meal served there. I sampled three of the cocktails, which were all outstanding in elegant Oakland fashion. We ordered the entirety of the hot and cold menus, and the food was thoughtful, well plated, and quite delicious! The lamb poke was scrumptious, and my favorite part was the fried potato accompaniment- tasted like the best barbecue chip that you eat down to the bottom of the bag for. Do not miss the dish that they referred to as recovery park . The dressing on these beers and radishes is so good that I would literally eat it on anything! Nestled right next to the DIA, I expect this place to be roaring. Shout out to Chef and the staff, for knowing just what this place needed!

The environment is so wonderful. There is a great lounge area, huge bar and tables like normal to sit. I had the duck confit and it was probably one of the most flavorful dishes I've ever had To drink: last word. Ahhhhhmazing.

Having had this chef's food from his time at Terry B's, we knew the food would be amazing - and it did not disappoint. I think what we were most surprised by is how reasonable the prices were. We were shocked when we saw our bill. We had the twice cooked egg and the potatoes to start. We both especially loved the egg - it had this amazing warm vinaigrette type dressing drizzled over the greens. For dinner, we got the steak and the duck confit, both delicious. The steak was by far my favorite part of the meal, followed by the barley "risotto" that was served with the duck. We ended with the donuts, which had a salted chocolate crunch bar and lemon curd. Amazing. All of this food, plus 2 drinks and 2 coffees - we were shocked when we got our bill for $80! Great deal, great food, we will be back.

Sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference... First of all, they take reservations! (Seems like the many restaurants do not these days.) I happened to mention in the online reservation form that the occasion was a birthday celebration. So, when we arrived to the restaurant and were seated, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the personalized menus that had been printed with "Happy Birthday" across the front. What a thoughtful, unexpected, personal touch! Also, earlier that day, I received a call to confirm the reservation. Always a nice gesture, in my opinion. On to the dinner... Fantastic service! Our server was gracious, friendly and approachable but not at all conceded like some restaurants can have. I appreciated the balance of professionalism with their casual (yet tasteful) dress code. I felt like I was having dinner at someone's house. Most of all, he was always there when we needed without being intrusive. He knew when to approach us to take our order or serve our food without constantly interrupting. And if we needed him, he was always nearby. There was no barrage of "How is everything?" or "Can I get you anything else?" as we were left to enjoy our food and conversation without constant interruption. Again.... It's the little things. :) Finally, the food was superb!! We started off with the "Improved Gimlets" that were slightly sweetened with chartreuse and honey while staying true to the "limey" essence. Our appetizers were divine! The fish cakes (special of the day) were smokey, crispy and light. The Lamb Poke (tatar) was rich and flavorful but not too minced or salty. The twice cooked egg was simple and sublime with its perfect soft oozing yolk seasoned with panko and a slight dusting of salt. I ordered the Lake Superior Whitefish next and it was the best I've ever had. It had the perfect golden crust and was complimented with a mustard seed (I think) sauce and a white bean medley. We also had dessert...I forget the name but they were two small donuts served with two sea salt dark chocolate bars and a lemony pudding...simply amazing!!

A change in our evening plans indicated an adjustment in our reservation time. Called to ask if we could make a change, and "Sandy" was more than happy to do so. No complaints on his part. We arrived as expected and were greeted by a genuinely smiling hostess, who acted like we were the "guests of the night." What a great menu, difficult to make choices, but I decided upon the smoked Skuna Bay salmon and the watermelon salad. Smoked salmon was out of this world, delicate but strong smoke essence, but so moist. The accompanying spice and pepper jelly were outstanding and I would have rated this a "5," but with an allergy to gluten, I was terribly disappointed to find two toast points buried in the sauce. Couldn't eat the sauce! This should be on the menu as I carefully review the ingredients. Friends had the grilled octopus (delicious), spareribs (outstanding, which I will try next time), and grilled cap steak (very tasty). While some venues think this "gluten" issue is a passing fad or fancy, I do not, and I get sick. I made an assumption because I thought the menu was correct with all the ingredients, my mistake. Next trip I'm hoping for a "5" rating all the way around!

If you plan to go for cocktails and conversation you may be disappointed. It's very loud and you'll be talking loud for your company to hear you. You walk into art when you enter Chartreuse. You feel welcoming with the colors and open atmosphere. The staff is exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. The menu is small with a variety of options for everyone. We ordered 5 small plates to share and then our main dish under the hot" options. All choices were excellent. I'm a chocolate lover and was disappointed there was not an option for that in their dessert offering.

Adored this place. The decor is unique, the food is very-very good, cocktails were excellent, wine list is limited but well done and the service was great (from hostess, bar and our server Grace). I very much enjoyed our meal and would highly recommend this restaurant.

I tried this restaurant a week after it opened, so I hope that things will get ironed out and the place will improve, because I like the building and the menu. First, it is not an attractive space. I know the name confines the decor somewhat, but the space is terrible. Bad lighting; a bright spotlight on one end of the bar, very dark elsewhere, with bands of light up high and down low, nothing at table level. The decor is minimalist yet still manages to be cluttered, and the bar and kitchen area looked chaotic and cluttered. Service was friendly but not very adept. As I said, I liked the menu offerings, but execution was weak. No subtlety of flavor, over salted, over spiced, and in one case over cooked. In summary, it just doesn't come across as a professional operation, sorry.

Food was delicious and creative. Smoked salmon appetizer and duck confit risotto both were excellent. Most everything is meant for sharing. Hot dishes range from $14 to $26, and the pricing pretty much indicates the portion size. Seems like everything on the menu is sourced from Detroit, even the distilled spirits. The staff, from busboys to management, are the friendliest you'll ever meet. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars are the cocktail sizes: rather diminutive. If they would serve up a decent size martini in a real martini glass (even if they had to charge a little extra) this would ensure a return visit from me.

My first visit a few weeks ago was outstanding, raved that it was my new favorite restaurant, but went again last night and it was only so-so, I left disappointed. No specials, no bread like before and I was really looking forward to the green tomato butter with the bread that I had on my first visit. So Chartreuse made a great first impression, but my second visit was just ok.

Fantastic new addition to the D! Made a reservation 2 weeks in advance- good thing, because it was packed! Wonderful ambiance and the interior design was beautiful- fun, fresh, relaxed! Service was great, everyone was very kind, helpful with suggestions, and water glasses never ran dry! Also very prompt- it was packed and we were never left waiting and wondering when our food would be coming. Between 2 of us we shared 6 dishes: The recovery park salad of the day filled iwth beets, green beans, radishes, goat cheese and marble rye toast; Ricotta-pea toast with ramps- so yummy! Michigan shrimp with mussels, coconut broth and popcorn- very unique and wonderful combination of flavours; Smoked salmon- nice large portion served with a great relish and cornbread Octopus: I'm an octopus die-hard and this one was delicious- perfectly cooked and complemented with nice acidity in pickled red onions and fennel Salmon Rillete- was a special of the day and very delicious served with beet greens and a night crisp toast! Too full for dessert, but we saw them coming out and looked great too! They also had about 3-4 dishes that were a bit "larger"; but I personally enjoy the sharing of tapas so it worked out great. For 6 dishes (and we were FULL) and 2 glasses of wine the total was $85 which in my opinion is fantastic considering the quality of the food and the restaurant as a whole. Wine selection - though small- was well rounded and nicely chosen! A great spot, casual, fun atmosphere- fantastic food!

Food and Service were fantastic once we actually sat down. We had reservations but due to unforeseen circumstances they could not be honored for 30+ minutes. However, food and service more than made up for that, plus the manager treated us to a couple of complimentary apps which was the right thing to do. They now have four repeat fans for life. Every App, Entree and Dessert was perfect. The craft cocktails were great too We will back

Really Impressive Another small plate concept that hit it out of the work. The ceasar was really fun, lots of fun vegetables besides the lettuce and a really tasty and light dressing. We had the crab cakes and whitefish which both amazing. Really interesting mix of vegetables and supporting food on the entrees. And we had the vanilla pudding which was amazing. I would love to see more of the flowery murals and other fun graphics to play off chartreuse colored walls.

Great atmosphere and decor! The service was very good too. My cocktail was fantastic- and I am very picky for drinks. My mother-in-law loved the vegetarian dishes and my husband really enjoyed his salmon. I had the steak caps and it was to die for. Super tender and tasty and big enough for an entree. The vegetarian special entree looked good but was very small. Don't skip the desserts: they are a must!

  • Gail B.

The vibe is cool, service is outstanding, but the entrees leave a lot to be desired. There seems to be more "other stuff" and the real part of the meal seems like an afterthought - like they're putting a ton of the cheap stuff on the plate to make it seem like there's more food. 4 different entrees tried and the only one that was good was the "cap" steak which even that isn't really the true cap of a ribeye. The pork came with way too much pasta and only 2 small medallions of pork, the sea bass was passable, the fried egg had one teeny tiny egg and a lot of greens. The wine list is marginal at best also. I love the "feel" of the place and love to support new places actually in Detroit but the menu needs a lot of work and doesn't make me want to go back. If I'm in the area I "might" stop I for a cocktail but wouldn't stay for dinner - that just misses the mark for me completely.

Went here with a group of friends. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Restaurant is in a nicely decorated space next to the DIA. Restaurant has a whimsical feel with serious dishes prepared well without taking themselves too seriously. I always like a restaurant with hands on ownership and I observed the owner being very active and making sure everything was running smoothly. Improved gimlets prepared by the bartender were great. Loved the lamb poke and cap steak. Patrons seemed like a hip crowd. I'll be back .

Awesome experience. Place looks fantastic. Love the simplicity so I was looking for that in the food/drink. They delivered. Grace greeted us and did a great job explains the menu and the specials. Small menu but very balanced. Three of us started with Spanish octopus, warm red cabbage & recovery park. All were exactly what was listed on the menu with perfect temp and various but wonderful texture. I truly thought the warm red cabbage was the best of the three. The flavor a of the smoked candy pecans with sherry and duck skin was excellent. Recovery park delivered with the crisp radishes and sweet carrots. The octopus was good but the other two were crazy good. The whitefish with the pickled mustard seeds and horseradish creme was phenomenal. Great earthiness to the dish. Loved it. The cap steak was perfectly seasoned and we wanted more. My 9 year old loved every bite. The midtown Manhattan with house bitters was very good as well. We will be in a lot. Cheers

A worthy entrant to the Midtown restaurant scene. We were impressed by the attentive service, and enjoyed the eclectic "small plates" menu design. We had: vichyssoise, with a smoked trout garnish, salad featuring (where possible) produce grown at an urban garden on the east side of Detroit; scallops, duck confit, and Avalon bread. For dessert, we shared a pound cake with blueberry sauce. The duck confit compared favorably to the same dish we had recently tried in France - a comparison I don't make lightly. We asked about a wine recommendation for our (very different) mains, and our server brought out samples of 2 different whites: a Viognier, and an Italian white. We went with the former, and were pleased with the result. All dishes were prepared with care, served attractively, and combined to create a most pleasurable dining experience. The only negative part of our evening came when we returned to our car, parked on the side of the restaurant, and found that we had exceeded our meter time by 5 - 10 min., and had been awarded a $45 (!) parking ticket. Note to management: we noticed the availability of (free) roof parking only after throwing 1-1/2 hrs. worth of change into the meter, so opted to leave the car on the street. We strongly suggest that diners be informed of the availability of free parking when they call to make reservations. Other than that, I can only say: welcome to Midtown, Chartreuse! Glad to meet you, Sandy Levine - you are off to an excellent start.

Overall the food was pretty good. I had the Michigan shrimp which was excellent and my husband had the cap steak. His only complaint was the onions were raw and the description said sautéed. We had the grilled octopus appetizer which was also really good. I thought the portion sizes were small for the price. I know we are probably used to large portion sizes at restaurants and it didn't help that I was starving by the time we had dinner. The cocktails were pricey as well and I did not like the specialty cocktail I ordered. It tasted perfumey and weird. I saw several people drinking them so maybe it's just not for me. Good location, right next to the DIA. Good ambiance and décor. Service was a little slow. We ordered wine with dinner and it came after dinner. Overall it was a good experience but we spent over $100 and I was neither full or drunk when we left. So I have to go with 3 stars.

It may be because of the concert downtown or maybe not. I was told to do reservations, which I did. We got there early and decided to have a few drinks. The host told us that we will be seated at our time. Our time came and went and I had to remind them of our reservation. Then we saw a few people walk in from the street and were immediately seated so we got up and reminded them again. The service was very slow. My appetizer of potatoes were cold, all but one. Drinks took forever along with the dinner. The steak was great, onions and tomatoes were awesome. I was told by several people to come here and again, maybe it was the amt of people downtown. I might be back. Might...

We went for dinner. This is an energetic delightful restaurant. We had the twice-cooked egg and octopus for starters. Our main courses were all fish - whitefish, and trout - both were ample and tasty. The service was fine. My one concern is that the menu is small so unless they update it often I'm not sure how often I will go since there were limited options.

Here are the really great things about this restaurant...the atmosphere, the service effort and the prices. Immediately after walking into Chartreuse I wanted to love it. The vibrant color and the welcoming sitting area put me in the mood for a great evening. I was pleasantly surprised with the menu prices and our waiter was charming and well informed. The cocktails were yummy as well so we were ready for a fabulous meal. We ordered the Sweet Pea Ricotta and Lamb Poke. We geared up to enjoy the beautifully presented starters and were welcomed with salt - way too much salt. It was hard to miss being it was all you could taste in both plates. We both took our initial pass at the starters and were left with tingling salt burned lips. We waited to order our entrees to let our mouths even out. Thankfully the duck confit and scallops had a much more balanced flavor and were good. We opted to have the grilled lemon pound cake which we enjoyed with our coffee. Unfortunately it took way too long to get the coffee and the dessert was cold by the time we started. It was removed from our check which we appreciated. I haven't written this place off by any stretch - it's a great spot. Just ease up on the salt, please.

We went on a Saturday night, without reservations, and had only a minimal wait. Our server, Grace, was pleasant, but not very personable. We had the Recovery Park veg plate, the Cap Steak, and the Pork Loin. We had ordered the Recovery Park as a starter, but all of our food arrived at once. I hate when that happens! You never seem to end up appreciating the first course amongst the awkward crowding of plates. It was especially bad because this dish is AMAZING! If it had been served as ordered we would have been in love with it. But, trying to eat our entrees while they were still hot meant that it was largely wasted. Sad. Our drinks-Last Word and Gimlet took forever, but the were on Par with the Oakland. My Manhattan was incredible. Water and coffee were never refilled and dirty plates far overstayed their welcome. I suppose I could understand if it had been a busier night....but when I can be seated within 5 minutes, I expect my service to be excellent. We will definitely return for the food, and hope that the service has improved. I would try it-it really was great food.

My best friend and I were looking forward to a good meal in my final weekend in town, after hearing and reading much praise we decided to stop by and enjoy some good small plates. Initially walking in, we loved ambiance - from the floral walls covered in a bright chartreuse coating to the draping vines and the rustic table set ups. We loved it. Sadly that's where this restaurants offerings ended. We started off with a round of cocktails - I got the Last Word (gun, green chartreuse) and he got an old Fashioned. While I did enjoy mine, his was horribly made even down to the flimsy ice cubes. Next came the food, we had the bread to start which was pretty standard. We ordered the Lamb Poke and Twice Cooked Egg. The Lamb had some good flavor but sadly it was over taken by the mango in the dish and the bar be que chips just didn't pair too well. The Twice cooked egg was also sub par, the dressing as a little sweeter than expected. Next our entrees - the duck confit, the much hyped steak and the potatoes. My friend and I had varying opinions on the duck (j enjoyed it, he hated it). We both loved the potatoes and they saved the meal. However the let down was the horribly dry steak paired with the lifeless green beans. I expect better beef at a Wal Mart BBQ during over Memorial Day in Columbus, OH. On a final note, the service was at least good. Our waiter was friendly and we consistently were checked on. That's our take on this place (as we have a slice at supinos).

Never gave a 5 star review before but this place is FAB. Great service, charming atmosphere and AMAZING food. The salad with the twice cooked eggs was delicious beyond words. The halibut was exquisite -- a complex blend of herbs and I don't know what. Couldn't isolate all the flavors but it was totally delish! My friend had the red cabbage and the ribs and she enjoyed every finger licking bite! The chef came out to say hello, the shared dessert was delish. All in all, a perfect spot. And the price was reasonable too!

So yummy.

Nice place for a romantic dinner or cocktails. The crowd is age appropriate and parking is easy. Make reservations or you might end up waiting for an hour.

Excellent, friendly and accommodating service. Bright, flavorful and inventive food. This is officially my favorite new restaurant in the city.

We really enjoyed our first visit to Chartreuse and will definitely be back. The food was outstanding, with great service and ambiance. This restaurant will be an asset to Detroit for years to come. Don't miss it.

I absolutely love the whitefish and the twice cooked egg. I keep going back and loving everything i try. The drink part and parcel is wonderful. I could not like the food more.

Food was fresh, atmosphere was even fresher. The service was terrible - took forever to get our drinks and food. They ran out of spare ribs and put bacon on my salad when I asked for none.

First time visit for an anniversary dinner. Got treated like royalty and the food was excellent. Did I mention we got treated like royalty? We can get excellent food in a number of places, but the staff made it an exceptional dinner. We will be back. (Note that you can bring your own bottle of wine if you like. $20 corkage.)
