We have been to Capers several times, including last weekend because a good steak sounded nice. They have excellent steaks and the "by the ounce" pricing allows you to customize your dining experience. I ordered an 8 ounce filet, prepared medium and was presented with exactly what I ordered. We also ordered a french onion soup which was simply fantastic as well. The salad bar is fresh and well stocked with a variety of veggies, cheeses and rich salad dressings. The a la carte nature of the menu is really nice, but portions are huge! It is entirely possible to share a baked potato or order of fries with a dining companion. Another delicious treat on the menu is Janina's cheesecake. It is a soft cheesecake, evocative of Peteet's or Lucki's cheesecake with a graham cracker crust that I swear is drizzled with amaretto. Skip the strawberries on top, but definitely order the cheesecake. We have always been fortunate and have been seated right away and had great, attentive servers. The gentleman servers we have had even shake my husband's hand and thank him for his business on the way out. Overall, this is a great, relaxed place to enjoy a delicious steak without a side of pretension. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night or meal out with friends

So my husband made a big deal about how great this place is and that I was going to just love it. Well not so much. It wasn't the worst but definitely not the best. The parking lot is tiny. It's very small and crowded inside so I felt uncomfortable as soon as we walked in. The table was so small our meal over crowded it and we had to set our drinks on the edge of the half wall next to us. The service was OK once the waitress finally came over. It was busy so she gets a break but waiting 15 min or more had us about to walk out. Then she "forgot" to put our steak order in so we finished our app and then waited another 15-20 mins for our entree. We got more attention from the lady who worked carry outs then our own waitress. The steak itself which is why people eat here (I guess) tasted great but was so thin. You order by ounce and we ordered on the larger side of the scale. It was a large steak but thin. I expected it to be like an inch thick at least. The baked potato is huge! I ended up being full and took it home and ate it for dinner the next day. Everything you add on cost extra of course but there are several add on items. Over all would I go back. Yes. One more time at least to give them another try. It was good food, mediocre service and over priced. You might have better luck at Texas Roadhouse.

I had one of the best steaks of my life at Capers. It's not much to look at from the outside, and hell, the same goes for the inside. But the steaks. My god. The steaks. You just can't find better quality steaks within $15 of what you'll pay here. As someone else mentioned, this isn't a fancy place. There were only two servers on a busy Saturday afternoon with a line out the door. But what they do in the kitchen, they do very well. We started with two crocks of French onion soup. Excellent, with plenty of cheese. We each ordered a steak - a Delmonico for me and a fillet for him. Jacob also ordered their macaroni salad as a side. We didn't wait long for our entrees. Our steaks were prepared just as we asked and were expertly seasoned. The macaroni side was boring, so I'd skip it next time. I savored every bite of my steak, though, and Jacob did as well. Our bill was only $34 for two big steaks, two crocks of tasty soup, some garlic bread and macaroni salad. I think Capers is a fine establishment with a good thing going on. Everyone should visit at least once in their life. I can't wait to go back.

Excellent cuts of meat seasoned well. You don't need any sauces. The drinks are great .you taste the alcohol.

Capers will always be on my thumbs up list.. They cook your steak as requested and get it right the first time. The servers are friendly and very detailed.. Comfy environment and atmosphere. Cajun bites and fried cauliflower are my favorite appetizers.

This place could be consider a small dive by definition but please believe that this is top of the line. Always wanted to try and finally did one saturday. The place is small and was about a 30 minute wait for me for a table. They have a full fledge bar with great (and cheap) drinks. For my starter i had their wings, which was really good to me (your typical coney island type wings). The steaks here are about .70-.90 cents an ounce and capers offer up four types of cut to satisfy you (filet, t-bone, ribeye, and i believe sirloin is the fourth type). I went with a 20 oz t-bone (cost about $15 i believe), which was excellent and great along with fries (ok, nothing special). Another really great thing here to me is their salad bar, which is a really good, decent amount of items ( has the flair of a ruby tuesday salad bar but a little bit smaller) and for me a must when i come here again. At the end of the day, it was well worth going to 7 mile and gratiot to get this great steak.

You only get 1 chance to mess up with me! Ordered my stand by...Cajun Steak Bites...ABSOLUTELY horrible, chewy, gristle, tough...etc! My husbands fish was meh...again, one chance to mess with my money!

Ok must admit defeat went in person with two friends on a wednesday and had the T-bone spaghetti special as well as the french onion soup. Everything was outstanding and our server was totally on point, never wanted for a thing.

I love finding dive places with great food, it's been something I've done for years. This place is one of my favorite finds. After several years, I still look forward to going here and it's one of the few places I'll tolerate standing in line for. It's everything I look for in a good place to eat. Atmosphere, quality of food, quantity of food, and service. These guys wins on all fronts. I won't say they have the single best steak you'll ever have, but I will say they have some of the best steaks I've had, certainly well above your average restaurant. Their french onion Soup is also some of the best I've had. Their baked potatoes are massive and overflowing with toppings. It's rare that I go here and don't have to wait in line at least a few minutes. A minor hassle that is well worth it. Other times I've had to wait 20 minutes, again, not a complaint, just a warning. So if you're a steak lover, go here, don't ask questions, don't hesitate, just go. Make sure you enjoy some of their french onion soup while you're there.

Best steaks, service, and prices in town period. I love it, do yourself a favor and try it out.

A good lil place in the city of Detroit. However the wait time, crowd, and gloomy atmosphere kinda make it uncomfortable. Food is great once you get it. Needs a larger building, parking and reliable wait staff! I would only go when they are first opening the doors.

I'm going to need to go against popular opinion here and state that this place is just not that good. Capers was recommended to me by a friend who frequents the finer steakhouses and eateries in the Detroit area, so naturally, I was excited to give it a try. I'm assuming this place gets most of their business by word-of-mouth, given the divey exterior and unassuming facade. We arrived at 7:30pm on a Wednesday, and the outside was quiet, but upon walking in, the place was pretty well stocked with people. Fortunately, there were a couple of tables still free, so our party of four was seated right away. Between the four of us, we ordered two filets, an order of lamp chops, and a cheeseburger. All were requested at medium-rare. 30 minutes later, the food arrived. My filet was cooked barely to rare, and both filets were funky cuts of meat...1/4 of the meat was tendons/fatty residue. I tried to chew through most of it, but the sucker simply wouldn't break down. The lamb chops were surprisingly thin, and cooked well, rather than medium-rare. Maybe it was an off-night for the cooks, but the hype was not justified, and Caper's will not likely see my business in the near future.

The atmosphere is just wonderful. The food is even better. I like the delmonico the best, but there is no wrong choice. Very few restaurants have mastered the art of great service, reasonable prices, and food that leaves you looking forward to your next visit.

I have been to Capers probably 30 times now since I discovered the hole in the wall paradise of great food from a friend!!! The Steak is Excellent! The Specials are too cheap! The staff is very giving and very friendly. I have waited sometimes up to 2 hours to get a table and standing on the sidewalk waiting to get in.......WORTH IT!!!

Steak by the ounce. You pick what kind of steak you want, and how big you want it. This place is in an undesirable neighborhood, but it's a great place in itself. Steaks are tasty, baked potatoes are HUGE, salad bar is small but gets the job done. If you go at busy times, you may have a wait. Try to go early

Went here the first time on a Saturday night for a date and the food was great! Didn't order a steak this time but I definitely will next time. I had the chicken stir fry & it was delicious. There was a wait for a table but it was worth it

I have had the opportunity to come to Capers a few times in the past and always passed it up. Mainly because of the location. Biggest mistake I've ever made!!! This place has the best steaks I've ever experienced by far. They're cooked to order, and have awesome variety. Almost everyday they have a different steak on sale per oz. as well! I will reccomend Capers to anyone that even MENTIONS the word steak from now on. I give Capers a 5 out of 5.

Finally made it here after several years of wanting to go. It did not disappoint. When we arrived, it looked pretty old school and somewhat diner-ish. It feels like a place where I would expect to see green Jello in a cooler covered with plastic wrap. I like these kind of places. We entered, only to find that we were about 12th in line for a table. We decided to wait it out. The line moves fast, so we invested about 10 minutes waiting. As we were being seated, we were offered choice of any open table, so far so good. Right as we sat down, we were greeted by the server. "It's our first time". She explained how the "by the ounce" steak system works and to be aware of the massive baked potatoes. We ordered 2 Delmonico (8 oz and 12 oz), split a baked potato, garlic Texas toast, and we started off with a bowl of French onion soup. One negative that I noticed is that soft drinks are 5.95, but it is what it is. Jokingly, I said it was my girlfriends birthday to the server, and half the tables started cheering and giving wishes. One lady looked at me and said get her a "Shady Lady", so I did. It has to be a 32 or 42 ounces daiquiri, which she loved. Even with me helping it was a lot to drink. The soup came out quickly and wasn't too salty. Tons of cheese and croutons and it was piping hot. I'd come back just for this soup. Our steaks, potato, and toast followed quickly. It's been so long that I've had a meal that was just great from beginning to end but they did it. Considering all the food and drinks, our bill came to 47.00. Really good deal. Monday and Thursday are discount days, and I'm sure I'll be back.

As with all things in life, there are tradeoffs to be considered. Yes, Capers offers dirt-cheap steaks, and yes: they're pretty darned good for what they are. *No one* would try to tell you that what Capers offers is as good as (or even the same as), say, a 28-day dry-aged steak you'd be able to get at, say, Lelli's in Auburn Hills. It's not, and you can't expect anything of the sort. For $6.50 for a 10 oz. Delmonico, you're going to get fresh, pretty well-trimmed steak, prepared properly, if sparingly. Everything else is extra, and still very affordable. Your steak will fit the bill of one that will quash your need for a decent steak. The tradeoffs come in things like wait times (which can be very long...I waited over an hour tonight, on my feet, quite cold), tight quarters, and a no-frills atmosphere. This is not a special occasion kind of place, but fair is fair: they work very hard, they're not advertising themselves as being a special occasion kind of place, and they're absolutely not pricing themselves as a special occasion kind of place. I happened to very much enjoy my first experience. It required a good deal of patience in waiting, and I'm not sure that I'd go out of my way to come here on any given day, but if I was nearby, and had a hankering for steak, this place qualifies. It's better than "A-OK", but I wouldn't say it's "As Good As It Gets", either. No doubt about it, though: the price is absolutely stellar. No complaints, no regrets.

Have been going to Capers since about 1987, when a local EMT with Michigan Ambulance turned me on to it! And 'Jeff' would rave about steak by the ounce, & the concept was unique /unusual until I finally went there, and became a fan. As a big fan or marbleized ribeyes, this is very good, you must order a minimum 6 ounces on the Ribeye/Delmonico Filet or T-Bone My 10 ounce was cooked to perfection, moist , medium rare , plus I'm a sucker for the grilled mushrooms, & there large baked potatoes . They also, like the Sweetwater Tavern are 'Known For" their HUMMERS, a splendid frozen beverage . Try the Clam Chowder , as it is yummy & chock full of good stuff. The only thing I'm not a fan of , is their French Fries, although a 1/2 order is enough for 2 to split, they are just average.

Everyone has their lil known gems they like to take friends to and this is one of mine. I been going here since I was a kid. I like that when you walk into this place you see a lot of regular folk from various backgrounds all there to get a big ass steak. The steak is great and pretty cheap when you compare to other places. Me and my wife can both get a steak (me 16 oz , her a modest 10), onion rings and frys, and two 32 oz beers for under $30. That's awesome. The old ass posters inside are straight out of the 80s and add to the feel. Take a drive down to the hood and get you one of them big ass steaks and a 32 oz, its good for you.

If I could give it 3.5 I would. So glad I finally went here and will go again...everything delivered as promised in other reviews. Loved our waitress Dee Dee who was sweet enough to give us an orientation when she found out it was our first time here (she brought us a carry out menu and ran down the weekly specials day by day. ) Portions are huge and prices really are reasonable. My husband had ribs and they were delectable and tender, however lost a few points for kind of run of the mill unimaginative sauce and as other reviewers have said fries were very bland, would expect more from a steakhouse. I had a 16 oz Delmonico medium rare and it was cooked absolutely perfectly. Sautéed mushrooms were good and good portion for price. Also lost points for the salad bar not being well attended to and not refilling my water. This is a huge pet peeve of mine anywhere because I will stop eating and wait if I don't have water I have to have it. It appeared there was a slight disconnect with the staff and instead of working in cooperation with each other they were all running around doing different things. But none of my "complaints" were significant enough to prevent me from returning. They were most likely isolated incidents and not indicative of any kind of pattern of bad service.

Knowing that I am a true meat lover, my husband took me there yesterday and OMG, I thought I had gone to "Carnivore Heaven". My 16 oz Delmonico Steak was cooked to perfection (perfectly medium as I like it). I had the delicious red skinned potatoes mmmmm .The atmosphere reminded me of a New York restaurant. Our Server was spot on. You talking about aiming to please. She knew ingredients and preparation techniques etc. I will go back again and again and again.......

Been going there since a couple of years. Great value for money . Wish the location was better . You know you are in a rough neighborhood when you have security in your parking lot and they have to escort you to your car. Food has always been good. They really have a good thing going there. Modest prices hot food can"t go wrong. Steaks are done well at this joint. If you don"t mind the decor and loud restaurant this is a place where your money will be well spent. It is hidden treasure wish they had a bigger place since there is always a line to get in. I will surely be back for more

Pros: You can order your steak by the ounce, good value, quality, pretty good French Onion soup (only w/ the cheese), closed Mt Clemens location had great inexpensive spaghetti dinner special on Wednesday (not sure if this one has the same) but the sauce is very good. Onion rings. Cons: Popular, so it gets crowded. There is a good wait normally on food (maybe because they have to measure, weight & trim the steak), cramped parking, outside of building doesn't look like much.

Where else, other than Brazil, can you order steak by the ounce (grams in Brazil!) or fries by the pound?....the novelty alone makes this worth a visit. Going to Capers is like stepping into the not-too-distant past: salad bar with iceberg lettuce, chickpeas, cucumbers and black olives; smoked mirrors; grand prix posters from the '80's. It should all feel familiar to you - does "My Two Dads" mean anything to you? And I'm not kidding about ordering the exact size steak of your choice. You want 20 ounces, then 20 ounces you shall have. You have a few select cuts to choose from - Delmonico, T-bone, Filet, etc. And as if it couldn't get any better, the food here is actually good. Steaks are a la carte but you can make a meal of it with some classic accompaniments. A plate of sauteed mushrooms, huge baked potatoes, great onion rings. Wash it all down with a giant soda, a 22-ounce beer or a birdbath-sized daiquiri. The place bustles, the food comes out fast and hits the table hot. If you're looking for a good steak dinner, but don't want to part with a 50, this is it. The filet typically runs about $1.10 an ounce. Not bad at all. Well worth the hike down Gratiot. I'm a bit surprised that neither of the two reviewers divulged any of this since it's unlike any other place around; I hope we're talking about the same Capers! Enjoy!

If you want a great steak, but not so sure you want to break the bank for it Capers is a great place to go. You pay by the ounce and I always get a 12oz Delmonico that costs me less than $15. It is a la cart but if all you want is the steak then why would you want to fill up on anything else. The sauteed mushrooms and onions are plentiful too. My husband & I share an order with our steak. Location: Some may not like the location but it really isn't located that far into Detroit. Plus there's a private parking lot that costs nothing to the patrons.

My husband's coworker recommended this joint to us. We usually eat out at Birmingham/Troy/Royal Oak/Ferndale area, so it was a nice change of location and atmosphere. The diner was PACKED with locals. We waited a while watching gigantic food pass by, but it was worth it! I had their clam chowder and it was piled on a soup plate and delicious for what, $3 or so? Patty melt was fantastic, as expected, as well. My husband enjoyed order-by-ounce steak. We are definitely going back to eat again soon.

The downtown Capers use to be Detroit's best steak and bar-b-q. When my parents would come into town we would go and they were surprised how good and cheap it was. While they loved the steak, I loved the bar-b-q and thought it was even better than Slows. Then we went a few months ago and my ribs were not as good as I remembered and my wife's steak never was "well done" even though we sent it back. There use to be another Capers in Mt. Clemens. Several months ago it was sold and now known as Nicki's pub. Maybe that's when something changed at this Capers, also.

Best food in Detroit. My husband and I were visiting from Denver. We were referred from a salesman at Protector Window and Door. Unbelievable! The food absolutely melts in your mouth. We can't wait to get back to Detroit so that we can have dinner at Capers!
