Actually just got Blue Star for lunch. Have the salisbury steak, mac and cheese and rice. Delicious. I just started coming in here for my lunches and am delighted that I have another option for lunch where the food is delicious, hot and different from the usual sandwich places around here.

I frequently eat lunch, here. Prices are always reasonable, especially for downtown. I think I have only had one meal that I wouldn't rave about. But, that was a matter of personal taste. Try the corned beef and cabbage.

What a gem right down the street from Cobo. For $8.50 I got the salisbury steak and generous helpings of collard greens and rice. The salisbury steak was cooked perfectly with onions, mushrooms and a delicious gravy that went well with the rice too. The collard greens were excellent as well.

Very pleasantly surprised with this low key establishment. Food is delicious and the servings are large. Cafeteria style line moves quickly and employees and servers are very helpful. Will definitely return soon!

Had a great breakfast sandwich. Hot and woth fresh eggs and fresh bacon. Nice place to stop by for breakfast

The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly! Their menu is constantly changing with new items to try. It's very affordable for the amount of food you get.

Not bad for the price--an entree and two sides for less than $8. It's a nice change from all the sandwich shops on this corner. Can of soda is $1.25, though--yikes! Mashed potatoes were good, but thinner, like the boxed kind, but I didn't mind. Mac n' cheese is on the blander side, but after eating Subway and Jimmy Johns all the time, I was still happy to eat it. Chicken I had was a little dry, so I'll probably try fish next time. Not wonderful, but not too bad for a cafeteria style lunch. Cornbread is yummy.

Blue Star Cafe continues to serve excellent, home-style food at a reasonable price. I've never had a bad meal here, and I eat here a lot.

Great prices. Went for breakfast not their strong suit. Not clear on how to order some food a little bland. More of a cafeteria then a cafe.

The food at Blue Star Cafe is really good- as far as lunch options go, this place has that homemade quality that is hard to find. The quality of the food (and lets me honest, their menu is set up as meals, and entree with a couple designated sides), and while I would say they are on the expensive side for a lunch spot, the quality justifies the price. I have a couple of fundamental complaints and warning to share, however. Keep in mind that with so many offerings from scratch, although a menu item may be listed, unless you see it on the cafeteria line, one of the staffers has to go back to the kitchen and make it for you. And this takes time. Which is fine if you are eating alone- but if you are eating with a friend, and they order something that is hot and ready to go, they will be waiting with you, while their food grows colder and colder. And on the day I stopped in, this wait amounted to 20 minutes!?! For some workers, their lunch is nearly over! My second complaint is the confusion that is caused by all this waiting. Some people are there ordering alone, so they get bumped up in line to pay, while groups on a single check take their time to order. Other people aren't asked to pay right after ordering, and are instructed to sit at a table to wait. Ultimately, the lack of a set system results in a mass of people all milling by the cash register, some of them have paid, some have not, and other than knowing who ordered what, the staff have no idea what order the customers are waiting in. So when an order comes up for the grilled fish, there may be 4 people waiting for it, but the kitchen staff don't know who has been waiting the longest... So long story short, my food was really good, and I was happy I stopped in, but their service is so inefficient, the lady behind me in line stole my fish and I wasn't happy about it. Still worth another try.

Tried this due to the location, and we will go again for sure. Great service and prices.

Best place for lunch in Detroit downtown.

Barry ensured our corporate holiday luncheon was great! Food was hot and delicious. The price was affordable and the staff were professionals on top of their game.

I like the variety here but if you want something not in the pre-made food buffet then expect to wait a good 15 minutes at least for your meal. Staff are very friendly and the food is quality made from scratch. Sometimes a bit heavy on the sauces, Chicken drenched in sauce, pork drenched in sauce but occasionally a good departure from the usual sandwiches and salads offered in this area.

4 stars because of the location (or rather, the lack of other options around this location). They have a counter with the dishes of the day laid out. ~$8 for an entree with 2 sides is a good deal. I got catfish, my friend got meatballs. Both were good. For sides, they have some veggies, mac & cheese (someone was raving about it), and other salad-type options. Also have the soup, but I didn't try it. the entrees come with a piece of corn bread which was quite tasty :) Would definitely go back, since it is one of the few locations within walking distance of the office

What crap-tastic signage you have there, Blue Star Cafe. I only start with this because I can't understand why you're hiding your light under a bushel. I've been working less than two blocks away from you for a year and I never once, even for a second, thought about going into your restaurant. Because your restaurant, from the outside, looks like a temporary pop-up arts and crafts shop. But now that I've gone in, I'm completely sold. The set up is classic "meat and two veg." The selection usually includes a half dozen entree options (meat, fish, and veg), four hot side options, a dozen or so cold side options, and a couple soups and salads. Once you make your selections, you'll be asked if you'd like cornbread (why ask? of course), and then you'll be charged $7.95. Sweet. I'm a late lunch eater, so sometimes by the time I get there, something or other is no longer available. Or if there's some hoe-down or other nonsense going on at the Cobo Center, they'll likely run out of stuff. Otherwise, you can be sure that you're getting good quality, tasty, home-cooked(ish) food. And as of last week they started sending out a daily email of each days selections. A little thing to do, but boy it makes their light shine bright.

Great quality food. Very homemade taste and lots of options. The sides are all great options, particularly the stewed tomatoes, potato salad, cornbread, fruit, and mac & cheese. As a vegetarian, there aren't a ton of options for me aside from the sides. Occasionally, they'll have some meatless Italian dish. Very inexpensive (roughly $8 for an entree and two sides). The staff is nice, the ambiance is casual. It's a great lunch place if you work anywhere in the area.

I'm in Detroit for a training and wandered for a few minutes looking for lunch. found Blue Star by accident, but it seemed simple and inviting. I like the quick, friendly, cafeteria-style service. The food was good; if the pasta was a bit softer than al dente, the bulgur wheat salad more than made up for it in flavorfulness. And the chef makes it a point to have vegetarian options. I'd definitely go back for lunch.

Awesome home made food and reasonable prices downtown. Something different everyday with a bunch of choices. Chicken noodle soup is as good as it gets and they have it daily.
