We had a group of 4 on August 12th for dinner. The appetizer of spinach/artichoke dip was awesome! More than the dip itself were the delicious crisp tortilla chips they were served with. I think next time I go, I will make a meal of that. My meal was Chicken & Bacon Ranch Wrap$7.59 Tender crispy chicken & bacon w/ lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, shredded cheese & ranch dressing wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was also very good. My mom liked her wet burrito and my sister had Southwest Chicken salad -Fresh greens covered w/ com, black beans, onions, cheese & tomatoes then topped w/ crispy, spicy fiesta chicken & circled w/ tortilla chips. Served w/ special chipotle ranch dressing. Interesting decor. I also tried an Upside Down Pineapple Cake cosmopolitan - it was delicious!

As we were R.V. traveling the summer across country and we found ourselves "stuck" in Charlotte awaiting 5 days of R.V at the local shady Spartan service center for repairs in a place we never expected to visit. Our bad week turned into the best part of our trip. Visiting the locals was something new to us. We stopped in for "an early lunch" by chance and found The Gavel Restaurant to be clean AND friendly. Talking with our server Nicole/owner was the bonus for us as she shared with us things to do in the small city of Charlotte MI. We enjoyed the Hoedown Rodeo, the annual parade, car show etc. as we pedaled our bikes throughout the city... The food though absolutely delicious, was second to the friendliness we were shown as complete strangers while adding a new addition to our bucket list, "Do a random week in an unplanned city", Check! Thanks Charlotte, we will NEVER forget you. All the best! Paul and Cindy, Poway CA

Had a pretty horrible all around experience here. Ran out of menu items at 6:00pm on a Saturday night, server issues... doubt I'll be back again...

The verdict is in and the judge has made his decision......The Gavel is above average in every way. 7 of us were seated immediately at 6pm on a sunny St. Patricks day. Green beers and apple martinis all around. Ice cold and served quickly. I ordered from the LITE menu. The fact that a place like this has a LITE menu is awesome. Grilled cod (mahi mahi, salmon, tilapia available as well) Broccoli was fresh. My fellow diners had steaks, corned beef, wings, and assorted wraps. All of good quantity and quality, served quickly with a smile. Great place to eat and drink if you find yourself in Charlotte MI

I ate at this restaurant about a week ago and had the French Dip sandwich with the waffle fries. I was very surprised at the quality of the sandwich and the ambience of this little restaurant I think that this is by far the best family restaurant in the area. The wait staff was very helpful helping me pick which entre to eat for dinner. In the end I was very pleased with the recommendation and will for sure be back.

Local flavor, tasty food, clean and well cared for facility. I had key lime chicken last night, and came back for BBQ ribs tonight. I'd recommend either one equally. The maple-balsamic vinaigrette is extra special and home made-- turned a side salad into something I will remember. The place is simultaneously similar to 100 others in a hundred small towns and yet has its own character, too. Bring your hotel key for 15% off your food order. Was not busy either night. Wait staff were attentive and friendly. I will be back again on my next trip to the area. Lots of parking out back.

Excellent food, good service, reasonable price! Steak was great! Salmon very tasty! We have been here three times this week and the service and food were excellent. Highly recommend the sirloin steak! Ribs are great also. Reasonably priced!!!!!

My dad, brother and I went because they were having a deal on their burgers, unfortunately they were really bland and it tasted as though the beef was grilled without any seasoning, there was just enough condiments to hide most of the unpleasantness. The fries were alright, nothing special, and the coleslaw made me wrinkle my nose!

Had lunch here today. Food was OK. French dip was bland. Service was good. I had the fish fry special. I've had better. Why do restaurants give you one tea bag and two cups of hot water? Probably won't be back.

Worst food we've had in a long time, everything seemed bottled, frozen or canned. The waitress was terrible, not knowledgable at all about what was in the food. If you have any dietary issues (for three of our party of four we were trying to find something that would not have gluten in it) good luck wringing any information out of the wait staff. Sorry, but not only that, it was expensive and we had gut-aches afterwards. Won't be going back.

While on business, a couple professionals in my field and I met up for a dinner date for business and the like. They suggested their regular haunt, the Gavel. This is your typical, small-town-downtown diner(ish) family restaurant. It's the kind of place out-of-towners glide right past, while locals have their butt imprints molded into their favorite vinyl booth or table. Wine is available but since this was work I just enjoyed a water with my salad and strip steak. There's really not that much to say: The salad was crisp and cold and tasted great. The steak was thinner than I hoped but cooked perfectly (medium-rare, as requested) and had lots of flavor . I've had the same steak a million times before, at a place just like this, and I always enjoy it. The service was fast, courteous if not overly friendly and the place was clean. My only complaint was cigarette smoke wafting over from the lounge. It was a little obnoxious... I think we ended up below $50 with tip for 3, no booze. Worth a visit.

We ate here on a Friday night and they apparently were waiting for a large rehearsal dinner (of 15 people if that...)... after being seated our Waitress who was very frazzled confirmed that the Salmon was very good..... well the side salad was the best thing we ordered.... the small loaf of bread looked promising, but was bland as ever...SO got the ribeye, cooked correctly, but no flavor other than the butter melted on top.... My Salmon was bland, over cooked and did not have any hint of lemon butter or whatever was advertised in the menu. Slow service and bland food, we won't be back.

Food is largely pre-packaged and un-exciting.
