They always get it right here. Best greek salad in the area. They use romaine instead of iceberg, add onions and lots of beets feta and peppers. Too many olives but I always give them to friends. I hate olives. Their dressing is better too, a good lemony vinaigrette. Plus they never overcook the chicken. Overcooked chicken is the worst common mistake in restaurants that I see. The smoothies are amazing also. Mango papaya dominates. Their lemonade is so so satisfying. The hummus with chicken is another favorite. Get some veggies on the side for sure. The shwarma sandwich is bomb and cheap as is the tawook and falafel sandwich. $3.99 sandwiches that are big. The garlic sauce is so fresh. Often nice and spicy too. The grape leaves are awesome. Shish kabobs too. You really can't go wrong The hot pita bread they serve when you dine in is also unreal alas I can no longer eat it as I was diagnosed with Celiac's disease. The service is quality, its a family owned place and most of the guys have been working there a long time. They don't even write orders down because they all have the menu memorized. The carry out is super fast too. Overall this is my favorite restaurant in Birmingham and I worked at several Birmingham spots over the years. Great food. Solid service. Nice price. Healthy. What else are you looking for???

I don't see what the fuss is all about with this place? I hear that the lentil soup is amazing (not just from reviews, but people there were raving about it as well), but everything I had was just mediocre. The beef shiskabob was overcooked, small in portion size, and not very flavorful. The chicken shawarma wasn't much better. The pieces of meat in both instances were too small, and not marinated enough/seasoned enough. The pita bread was good, as was the garlic sauce, hummus, and tabouli. The babba was wretched, but maybe I just don't like babba... It came as a combination. I've never had it before, and I hated it. The service pretty much sucked. We had a waiter, but he was too busy doing something else. So, he took our order then the cook/busboy brought our food, checked up on us, and did the things the waiter kept neglecting to do. I ordered a coke through the waiter, 20 minutes later I had to re-order it through the busboy who brought it fairly quickly. It was easy to tell that the cook/busboy was frustrated with the person that was supposed to be our waiter. We ordered a guava juice, which was good, but the waiter served it to us warm, with no ice. It was for my date, or I would have sent it back or asked for a chilled mug or something. She doesn't like ice in her drinks, but the juice would have been better if it was cold. All in all, I would much rather eat Middle Eastern food at Ikes in Sterling Heights, and Bucharest Grill still has the best shawarma around. The prices of their sandwiches here at Pita Cafe were good, but probably a little too good. I would have rather paid an extra buck or two and had a better tasting, more filling sandwich.

Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was empty. The man at the register greeted me right away and handed me a menu. The bread and garlic sauce were delicious as was my chicken shawarma. I will definitely be back to try more food and a smoothie.

The tawook Caesar is what keeps me coming back every once in a while, there is just no other sandwich w it's light and not cheese filled wrap I'd truly prefer it to be grilled.... I forgot they do not do this with out request The crushed lentil soup was in edible vile spit it out ..... Could barely handle the smell of whosever gym socks were soaking in it The whole lentil soup was okay, very salty... Had a bunch of lentils and some celery and carrot. Not much flavor or spice The staff makes you feel a bit uncomfortable , I called for carry out and they said no we can't dothat.... The man proceeds to crack up laughing ... And then says of course ill be happy to The negatives of this place keep me from being a regular but a few timesi year I have to scratch my itch for the tawook Caesar, I think the move is having someone else pick it up and order it for me Fair price

My wife and I were looking for a place to eat on a Sunday in downtown Birmingham. Though Pita Cafe wasn't scheduled to open for an hour, they seated and served us anyway (big plus!). I got some nice foule (fava beans, garlic, lemon and olive oil). It was just the right mushy texture (better than I've had in some time). This came with nice, warm pita pillows (perfect for dipping into the foule). The dinner salad was fine, though it could have used a little more romaine. Our waiter was attentive and nice. I also liked the relaxed vibe that the room had. This, and the food, make Pita Cafe a nice alternative to some of the more upscale options nearby.

Very rude. Wow. I wouldn't go here unless you're dying of starvation and nothing else is open.

In Metro Detroit you cant throw a rock without hitting a schwarma place and then having the rock skip and hit another two to three schwarma places. As such, your basic chicken pita must stand out from the pack and that's why I love Pita cafe. Their chicken schwarmas and lamb schwarmas are juicy and cooked to absolute perfection. The prices are generally lower as well. You can get two of them and some hummus and pita for less than $10 bucks. And that's exactly what my fiance and I always do. We've eaten there a number of times and never been disappointed. Best Bet: Lamb schwarma, plus a side of hummus and extra pita. Get a smoothie too if you are feeling healthy. Many people are always drinking smoothies there.

First off, the people saying how great the Arabic food is here must have never been to Dearborn. It is average at best and after a few visits have not had one dish that came close to anything you would get at even a C+ place in Dearborn. Second, the staff is not the most polite and the wait is a joke even when the place is half full. Pretty much if you are in this area and need an Arabic fix, it is doable. Outside of that, of all the places I have had Arabic food at I can't think of one it is better than.

I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for as long as it has been in Birmingham, which is a long time. It is close to home and convenient, and it has always been adequate at providing decent Middle Eastern food for family gatherings. However, our most recent experience there has prompted me to write a long overdue smack down. The straw that broke the camel's back was a ridiculously overdone Shish Kafta. Shish happens? Maybe. But how long can you put up with just OK food from a team that could not care less about the cleanliness of its establishment. It is disgusting, and it has been disgusting for too long. There is room in downtown Birmingham for a much better, high-volume, reasonably priced Middle Eastern carry out place. Samir? Elie? La Marsa? Until something better comes along, we're heading south to Shish Kabob Express and Falafel King.

Chicken shawarma sandwich is my litmus test for any Mediterranean spot like this. Sadly it was a little bit of a let down...the flavors and the grilled chicken was wonderful but compared to Mr. Kabob, or certainly Bucharest, the size just didn't compare. My girl ordered a salad which was fairly large with a nice piece of grilled chicken on top for around $13 and the quart of split lentil soup was around $10 but worth it. I loved the profile of the lemony flavors going on...it was warm and really delicious. I've decided I'm going to figure this recipe out and make it at home. Service was very friendly and since we picked-up it was super quick. I think I'd like to dine-in sometime and order a little differently...but the food was pretty solid while the prices just a little high.

Awesome experience. Ordered the lamb shish kabobs on our waiter's (Zuhair) recommendation. Couldn't have been happier! The garlic spread is a show stopper.

I like Pita Cafe. They are a fair priced little restaurant with pretty good food. It's in the heart of downtown Birmingham. The service is really good every time I've gone in. Our drinks on consistently refilled (which is basically how I judge service) and the food orders are done and delivered timely. The new bread is awesome... Here's what I didn't like. I've been to a lot of middle eastern restaurants. The garlic paste has a funky taste, and the chicken shawarma is dry. Here's the biggest problem... The bathroom is a freakin' icicle. I mean, for gods sake, it's winter time!! The bathroom is as cold as it is outside... If I were a guy, there would be some serious shrinkage. Put a darn space heater in the bathrooms... I'm most certainly going to be a patron only in the warm weather... just in case I need to use the restrooms.

First time customer. I was excited to try this new restaurant for lunch, but totally disappointed by cashier's rude manner of treating customer. I just order a quick sandwich, but put on wait for several of time because the cashier was running around in the restaurant. When I was about to order, he was so impatient to take my order. Tons of good restaurants in Birmingham. Dont bother even trying this!

Always fresh always good and has plenty of healthy things to choose from aside from the hearty entrees

Excellent hummus and bread. Great variety on the menu. Generous portions. Very fair prices for the quality of food.

I am liking this place more and more! The food here is really good so far and since I keep coming back here for lunch it's a sign that I have trust in this place. I have had Chicken Shawarma sandwich, Fattoush salad with chicken, arabic style hamburger, and sauteed mushrooms, and their smoothie. All of it was really good. I would say my favorite thing about this place is their house fries. It's not french fries. It's fresh cut potato slices cooked like french fries but it's more soft and not crunchy. It's really good. Almost taste like half baked and half fried. It's super good. They also give you nice warm pita bread when you sit down but they don't give you free Garlic butter for it. Very strange since almost every middle eastern restaurant I ever been to gives you free garlic butter. It was $0.70 which isn't a big deal I guess. The prices are good. You shouldn't spend more then $10 for lunch. I'm sure it will be little bit more for dinner portion. So far this is the best arabic restaurant around Birmingham that I have been so far.

  • Shauna N.

Enjoyed the food a lot. The rice had almonds, which was pretty delicious. The bread served before our meal was warm and delicious (I love bread so this mattered to me). Our server was kind of rude... but the owner(?) behind the counter was very conversational and friendly. A little more expensive than Dearborn, of course. But for as close as this is to home, I'll definitely be back.

I have become a regular here. To go food, by it's nature, is mostly not that fresh and / or healthy. Middle Eastern food contradicts that thought. Unfortunately, there just aren't very many GOOD restaurants in this category. The Pita Cafe is one of them. All of their locations are outstanding. If you are thinking of having a nice dinner out on the town, this wouldn't be my first choice but grab a carry out. I recommend any of their sandwiches...the falafel is hard to beat. For dinner, the "Shish for 2" feeds more like 4 and is an insane value. Its like a pound of rice, a ton of kabobs and piles of veggies. SO GOOD and $26.00. Make sure any order is accompanied by an order of hummus. Theirs is as good as it gets. Lastly, their juice is dynamite. Make it a regular stop on your carry out circuit. You will be glad you did!

Excellent hommous along with gyro sandwich. Great taste but not excessively priced. The fresh juice also went well with the gyro.

  • Chris A.

This place is ok. The service would be better if they weren't so rude. If you need to split a Check or ask for separate checks good luck (you'll get an ear full). Now a days who doesn't split checks??? I've only worked in Bham for 4 months and have vowed not to go back or order take out from this place.

need to pick things up - its slipping re: food quality and cleanliness. Too much competition to let that happen

  • George T.

Two Words: GARLIC SAUCE. This place has by far some of the best garlic sauce I've ever had. The service is always lovely and it's always nice that they remember me whenever I come in. I would recommend this place to a friend.

  • Thomas M.

I order carry-out lunch from Pita Cafe about 1-2 times a week.. Never spend more than $5. Always satisfied. Food is usually ready by the time I walk down the block to the restaurant. Ingredients are fresh and tasty. Good hummus, tahini, falafil.... you get the picture. The best middle eastern cafe in downtown area (Phoenician is in another category --- fine dining). For dining in, I've had dinner at Pita Cafe before and would say Grape Leaves or Lebanese Grill is the better bet. But if you're in town and want to grab a quick Falafil sandwich or chicken shawarma... you can't go wrong!

  • Alexandra K.

I love Pita Cafe. From their mujadara to their sojet, I love their interpretation and execution of quality Middle Eastern food. Their garlic sauce has too much mayo in it (I hate mayo), but their whole lentil soup is my all-time favorite.

    (4)
  • R L.

Great food and smoothies, however, they definitely need the garlic recipe from the original. Weird thing ....the floor always feels dirty.

  • Claire D.

If you can get a parking spot the Pita Cafe is an acceptable place to grab some middle eastern food in Birmingham. I feel like the salad dressing for the fattoush salad is inconsistent and the shwarma is always dry, but if you order a sauce on the side or some hummus you can't really tell. However, the service is better than Grape Leaves (on Maple & Coolidge by Whole Foods). t

I love this restaurant and usually am very happy with my selection. Last Friday for takeout I ordered chicken with mushrooms and a salad. After pick up I discovered that I received chicken with hot peppers. Fortunately the seeds were removed but still too spicy. Someone needs to pick up the accuracy of the orders.

Yum! I love Pita Cafe. Being that I don't live in Michigan, I don't have the expertise to rate this place in comparison to other mid east restaurants. So, that said, this place is fantastic. The fresh squeezed juice is amazing, the hummus is actually one of the best I've tasted, the shawarma is to die for, the crushed lentil is amazing and the garlic spread is my favorite - I crave it. I seriously crave this place when I head back to CA. I know there are many many places to choose in the Detroit area, but this place is always on my list to hit before I leave.

Shish Kabob Express is usually my favorite Middle-eastern/Mediterranean restaurant to go to but this place was very good and I love the location. Downtown Birmingham is just so charming and adorable. I love doing anything in that area so the location is definitely a plus. I ordered ghallaba and it was awesome! Really good sized portions (I ended up giving half to my date). The lentil soup was so-so. But the pita bread they give you when you first get their is amazing! They give it to you fresh out the oven so it's still warm when you're eating it and I love the sesame seeds. Definitely going to be coming here more often. :)

Good, but prefer Oak Park location The food was quite good and the service was good too. Also, they have the fresh made juice (yum!). However, I far prefer the Greenfield Rd. Pita Cafe, which has The Poofy Bread (!!!!!) and a nicer, more upscale, ambiance. Still, a good place to drop by for dinner when I'm out with my friends.

  • Suzana Q.

Best garlic sauce out of all the med restaurants I've visited; it has a nice flavor and consistency and you can brush your teeth ONCE and actually get the taste of garlic out of your mouth for the day. The lemonade here is fantastic--the perfect combo of sweet and sour with a nice slushy consistency. The hummus, grape leaves, salads, falafel, and shish tawook are all good...I've been here quite a few times and the food has been consistently good. If they have a bad menu item I haven't tried it yet.

  • kelly w.

I feel a little strange to be the first to give Pita a less-than SUPERB rating, but what can I say? I'm a realist. I agree that the prices are right. But the quality of food? Believe me, I have had worse, but I by no means feel like it deserves all this praise. My chicken schwarma was a garlic coated dried-out chicken. The fattousch I got was drenched in oil and a little tired looking-- and tasting. Perhaps it had sat out too long. Pita cafe, I am not writing you off completely, but please don't skimp on quality-- even for the lunch-time crowd.

  • M S.

I visited this place with a cousin who had recommended it this past week. I have to say, not that great. Service was great, the food was not. The garlic sauce seemed to be mixed with yogurt or something-hardly any garlic flavor and a cheesy aftertaste. The chicken and lamb were rubbery. Bread was pretty good. Not worth it.

  • Peter S.

The Birmingham Pita Cafe is the evil twin to the Oak Park location. The name, menu, and decor are the same or similar, but the food at the Birmingham restaurant is not good. The vegetables had clearly not been washed--they still had the produce stickers on them. The food did not taste that fresh and we both felt a little sick later that night, which was not that surprising given that our peek into the kitchen revealed a disgusting sight. I think the only reason I'm giving two stars (as opposed to one) is carry-over from the Oak Park Pita Cafe.

    (2)
  • Tiffany D.

I'm such a fan of middle eastern food in general, and when in Birmingham, this place hits the stop. You're familiar with the menu now... everything from grapeleaves to kibbee, salads, soups, sandwiches. They also make their own fresh juices and the best frozen lemonade this side of Hoboken.

Nothing too fancy here. The service is quick and the food is pretty good. The smoothies here are great too.

I love Pita Cafe! Whenever my girlfriend and I are in Birmingham we always go for dinner. They have a large menu and a variety of Middle Eastern food. The food is great, especially the bread, chicken kabobs, and rice. It is a bit pricey, but they give you HUGGGE portions, so you are truly paying for what you get - definitely enough to split/take home. It has a nice atmosphere, staff is friendly, and would definitely recommend going there for a quick lunch or dinner when you are in the area! Enjoy!

We went here for lunch after going to the farmers market when it was super hot out. I ordered the fresh squeezed lemonade and expected it to be regular lemonade. It totally blew me away. There was this icy-lemony stuff in there that made it the most refreshing lemonade I ever had. I also had a falafel sandwich and the garlic spread as an appetizer. The garlic spread was outstanding. The bread they bring to your table with it is really really good too. I would definitely come here again!

From the outside I did not expect much but then we went inside and it was a nice sit down location for a.quick bite to eat. They have awesome spinach pie with solid chunks of cheese and spinach that just melts in your mouth. I have heard the sandwiches are good as well and very reasonably priced. Also check out their smoothies.

I picked up a few items from Pita Cafe while walking around downtown Birmingham. First, I ordered the chicken sharwarma (for someone else) and shish kafta (for myself), and while waiting I ordered veggie grape leaves and fries as well. It took 20 minutes to get the two sandwiches out (another 5 for the grape leaves and fries). I've been to many, many middle eastern restaurants and I have never had to wait that long for TWO sandwiches.. Maybe the had a big order before me? I don't know, but I wasn't happy about waiting around. When my first order finally came through I sat at the counter and ate my shish kafta. It was ok. I asked one of the guys for garlic sauce and he was nice enough to bring me a container of it. Garlic sauce was also just okay. Maybe it's just me, but I expect my garlic sauce to taste...well..garlicky. It was just lacking flavor. I did, on the other hand, really like the grape leaves. The best part about this place is the service. The guy at the cash register was extremely friendly, as was one of the waitresses. I would come back to this place just to see their friendly faces. I wish employees at other middle eastern restaurants had their attitude.

  • darrin d.

Had their schwarma and baba plate last night while in town on business - definitely a winner. The place was busy and the staff were quite efficient. Not much for decor, a few photos, some fake flintlock pistols and swords adorn the walls, but I didn't really come there to look at the decor anyway. Definitely good value for money - more food than I could finish and that is saying something.

  • Regina B.

I think this place is good, but not anything exceptional by any means. The venue is small, but more of a quick lunch spot. The menu is standard middle eastern cuisine. The workers are super friendly, but speak in Arabic when they aren't speaking directly to the customers, which is one of my pet peeves! My biggest negative is the obnoxiously loud fruit blender they have located directly in front of the restaurant. If you're sitting towards the front you hear it going off randomly as you're eating and wow is it annoying!!

  • Alexandra K.

i'm constantly on the look out for a better garlic spread + pita bread combination but cannot seem to find one. Pita Cafe has set the bar really high. I love their felafel, hummus and tabbouleh wrap - used to order it all the time during a one and a half year run at vegetarianism. Now i usually order the chicken shawarma - a Mediterranean staple. Used to be a weekly occurrence to eat here when I was working in downtown Birmingham. Now I try to get take out every once and a while. it's one of my favorite places in metro Detroit and by far my favorite Mediterranean.

Outstanding Shish Tawook, Lentel soup - and the bread is unmatched anywhere in metro Detroit. We drive 30 minutes for this.

Pita Cafe, you are always there for me. I have been a fan since I discovered Middle Eastern food in the early 90s. Having lived in Seattle for 13 years now, I have to say that it is still one of my top 3 "Foods of Detroit" that I still miss... but when I'm in town, as I just was, I always have to treat myself. Dishes that I try to order whenever I'm in town-- clearly this would require several trips! Fattoush Salad-- perfect amount of sumac and seasonings! Chicken Shawarma sandwich-- always a great balance of ingredients Mujadra-- Seriously, why can't I find any in Seattle where I live?!? This is such a hearty and delicious vegetarian dish, and Pita Cafe always gets it right Ghallaba-- Pita Cafe is always more consistent than La Marsa for this dish, saucy, vegetables cooked just right, generous portion size. Hummus and of course garlic whip-- what else would we snack on before our main meals arrive?! Fresh-juiced lemonade, frozen-- YUM I see you have since added softer bread for dipping, it's great if a little bit on the sweet side for me. Your servers are always attentive and courteous. I find a little bit of eye-contact and a friendly demeanor with my service goes a LONG way-- it's my standard operational procedure no matter where I eat. Thanks for always being consistently done, Pita Cafe!

I wish I could give a better review, but everytime I have gone to this location my order is screwed up. Not to come across like a jack-ass, but how hard it is to make a chicken shawarma sandwich without garlic sauce?!?!?! When I place an order at the location on greenfield and 10 mile, it's correct everytime and seems to be slightly cheaper too. I will never patronize the Birmingham location again.

    (1)
  • Rachel B.

This was the best Lebanese food I have ever had. The bread was warm, soft with a slight hint of sweetness. The hummus was smooth and creamy and delicious. The portions are huge! I split the combination platter with my boyfriend who is a big eater and we took over half of it home. The price couldn't have been better! I will definitely return for more.

  • N P.

I like this location more than the Oak Park location. They seem to give more food per portion that is ordered than the Oak Park location and even when they are busy service seems to be faster and friendlier than the Oak Park location. I also think some of the entrees taste better here but that may just be me! I think that (like the Oak Park location) prices are higher at Pita Cafe than many other similar Mediterranean restaurants, especially for dinner entrees. For example, the mjardra is $10 which is pricey even if it includes yogurt and salad (or soup). Yogurt alone is $2.25 for a cup. For lunch it is different. You can get a lunch sandwich for about $4 (with many different offerings) so then it is a very good value. If I'm in the area this is a restaurant I would choose for convenience, service, and good selection for vegetarians compared to other restaurants in the area. I used to be a regular here for dinner but I've reviewed other restaurants where I can get more value for $10 than they offer here. It is still a very good option for lunch when I'm in the area.

The food here is horrible. I went here with my wife and kids, all the first round of food was sent back, because all was inedible. The waiter encouraged me to allow them to remake and against my wishes they did. THEY GET A STAR FOR TRYING. The second round was just as bad, I asked for the check, my table was just across from register, manager saw that all food was not eaten, as I paid and all my family standing ready to leave, he did not even ask way did we not eat the food, yet he did take payment. Never again.

I go here quiet often with one of my friends. This place has very, very good food and gives you quiet the large servings which I never can eat everything on my plate. I usually get the chicken shawarma with the grilled veggies and its is so amazing. I have never waited for a table and they always seat us right away. The service is good, fast and friendly and the price is so great for what you get. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Always fresh and delicious. The hardworking and courteous staff are an added bonus. Try the hummus with chicken appetizer.

  • Kevin L.

The food was okay. I would rate it as average. However, the service left me wanting. The good news is that after questioning the whereabouts of the missing raw juice drink I ordered, my server immediately made the drink himself. The bad news is he did not bother to wash his hands prior to doing so. I witnessed him manhandle every fruit and vegetable that went into that germ cocktail. I realize that restaurant workers must touch food with their hands and cannot constantly stop to wash before preparing every item. However, this guy just previously handled money, picked up dirty dishes, and washed a table. Hopefully, all of the vitamins in my drink will ward off the impending rhino virus. With all of the great Mediterranean places around and new places to try, I don't find a need to return to this Pita Cafe location.

This is one of my favorite places to grab lunch at during the week. Their lamb shwarma sandwich is fantastic, as is their garlic sauce and the rice pudding. The service here has never been less than wonderful. After a few visits, the staff would recognize my name when I called to place an order, and would remember how I liked my sandwich. That made me feel valued as a customer. I miss being able to eat here more often - it was easy when I worked in downtown Birmingham. Now that I'm a few miles away, it's a lot more difficult - parking at lunchtime is next to impossible.

Perfect for my family! For $24, the three of us order the "veggie combo for two", (easily feeds four!), and still have Lunch for the next day. It begins with a trio of hummus, babaganou and tabouli with a basket of warm, fresh pitas. The combo comes with two soup or salads and i Recommend the lentil soup. Next comes the veggie platter with six grape leaves, four falafel, tomato kibbe, majdra, pickles, peppers all served over an extremely large bed of rice pilaf. (you can choose fries if you do not lime rice pilaf but that seems lime a really weird choice with these Mediterranean goodies) It is a lot of good, healthy and fresh food for a small price.

Fabulous middle eastern food! I like!! I wish there were more middle eastern places like this where I live. I know this place is a small chain and it looks pretty modern and Americanized, but the food is yummy, For a Shawarma, you pay less than five dollars and the portions is pretty good too. The meat is cooked well and the sauces are very tangy. I love it! I got so full and paid so little! That's what I like! The only thing I don't recommend is the soup. I had a vegetable soup that wasn't great. Tasted like it came from a can like Campbell's soup, but other than that, you will not be disappointed by the food. I'm a fan!

We stopped in after a trip to the zoo, and were pleasantly surprised by the delicious abundant food. The pita bread was absolutely scrumptious, though I would have liked hummus served with it, rather than butter and margarine. We ordered a falafel plate, a couple of wraps, and lentil soup. All were quite filling and tasty. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. If I lived closer, I'd go back.
