Great place, great service and food is done by two culinary school top of their class grads. Wonderful experience, worth the short drive in!

Fresh and delicious food. Generous portions. We went at 545 pm on a Saturday evening. Seated without a reservation, but calling ahead is recommeded for busy times. My dad had the pork chop. Served with fresh vegetables and delicuous mashed potatoes. My mom had the ahai tuna special. I had a rich pasta dish with mushrooms and pork belly. Shared the turtle brownie for dessert. I also loved the blackberry hard coder they had on tap. We highly recommend eating here.

We found this recently opened little gem two weeks ago and have already eaten there three times. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. The family owned and culinary schooled daughter/chef appear to prepare everything on site, including cutting their own beef. The beef stock used in their soups is exquisite and I honestly could recommend everything we've eaten there. We are delighted to have such a find nearby. Selfishly, I hope it remains our little secret. ;) * The "grand opening" has yet to be scheduled in order to adequately train the wait staff. I assure you the kitchen is more than ready. Bon Appetite!

Here for an early Saturday dinner, the first ones in the restaurant, seated in the less than attractively carpeted back section. Nice decor, impressive menu variety. Scallops app really good. Waitress seriously under trained, though attentive. Ordered a half bottle of prosecco - they had to chill it, and didn't quite get it cold. I added our ice water to the bottle holder, which solved the problem. No butter served with the decent bread -- which had a piece of parchment baked in. Carbonara was more like alfredo, pasta not house made, not enough mushrooms or pork belly, soupy sauce. Flank steak decent - oddly presented, though. Big square slices, rather than the traditional long slices that show off the steak, and covered in sauce - which was delicious, maytag blue cheese superb. Overly rare, little char/crust, and seemingly not freshly prepared to order. (No option to order medium rather than rare). Bit into a large chunk of ginger -- ??? from some other plate. Sides not described on the menu or by the waitress. Fresh, tasty veggies, though how can you not serve Michigan asparagus in May? Finally, the half dozen staff convened at the bar having a great time was kind of distracting.

My wife and I happened upon this unassuming little place because our favorite mexican place was closed, and we are glad we found it. While plain on the outside, we found the inside clean with modern decor and welcoming. Our server was terrific and we were pleasantly surprised at the menu selection. We ordered a Bloody Mary (they have a good wine, beer, and martini/drink menu), a spicy Drunken Shrimp appetizer, and we split the blackened swordfish entree. The Bloody was impressive. I love Bloodies and have never found one that impressed me in the Battle Creek area. This at long last, met my satisfaction. Decent spiciness and flavor, celery salt and spice on the rim, and included 2 large shrimp, 2 pieces of pork belly, celery stick, pickle spear, cucumber slice, and 3 olives (2 bleu cheese filled). The Drunken shrimp was, in my opinion, coked perfectly and the well-flavored sauce doubled as bread dip. Finally, the swordfish was split for us in the kitchen, was blackened to our liking, and the vegetables and rice that accompanied were tasty and cooked well. In our opinion, this is the type of Cafe that Battle Creek and the surrounding area needs more of, and we certainly be returning. It is great for a date, a business lunch, girls night out, or just for good food. I did feel the food was a tad overpriced, but this is my only caveat. Overall, we were thoroughly impressed.

Beginning with the welcoming hostess and staff, Canal Street impressed. The diverse standard menu is augmented by a trendy chalk board menu. The entree option are unique and well paired. Our party of four each ordered different items including a burger option not on the menu. All four meals were wonderful. I ordered from the board, having the panko breaded eggplant with the house made marinara. My meal was paired with jasmine rice and a roasted vegetable medley. Even the rice was incredible. The beverage and desert options are yet another gem. The beverage menu offers many quality options. Deserts are house made and wonderful. It's so refreshing to have such an excellent dining option nearby. The atmosphere was eclectic but rather loud. A bit difficult to hold a casual conversation at our small table of four. Overall, a definite sustain. A gem in Augusta.

Great food. Was visiting on business and found this gem! Had great drink specials as well. Frequented it several times during my stay because it was fresh food not from a chain. Highly recommend.

I was worried this place was rated by locals trying to help the place out. Fortunately, it is actually as good as the ratings suggest. Although cozy the atmosphere is comfortable and enjoyable. I was there with my wife and 10 year old son and didn't have a reservation but was able to find a seat at the bar. I started with an Almond Joy Martini and my wife had a glass of Reisling. The drink was very well prepared and the wine portion was generous. I also took note of the bartenders wiping down each wine glass to ensure it was crystal clear - a rare sight these days! My wife and son split the steak and I had the cajun pork chop. Both were very well prepared and the sides were generous and tasted homemade. The steak and chop were done perfectly. I really enjoyed the heat of the cajun spice while the chop itself was succulent. Although I was full my son ordered a small cheesecake which was just the right size and price. This is exactly the type of restaurant I enjoy returning to again and again. The service, quality and price were all spot on, Canal Street Cafe should thrive with a very loyal customer base. Highly recommended, I'm hoping they open one up in Marshall.

I ate lunch here on 04/28/2015 and was very impressed! The atmosphere is very nice, open, and bright. They've done a fantastic job w/ the venue, which used to be the old Barking Frog. I had the traditional Reuben lunch special, not the Reuben that is a staple on their lunch menu, and it was the best Reuben I've ever had! They used actual corned beef brisket for the sandwich, not corned beef lunch meat. It came with house cut fries, which were delicious! I also had the Panko crusted portobellos, because I had to try them and bring some home to my wife, as those are her favorite. If you've ever had the portobello fries at The Union in Kalamazoo, these are right up there, probably tied. They came w/ a horseradish ranch dipping sauce, which was amazing! Friendly staff, great service, terrific atmosphere, and wonderful food. You gotta try this place!

You don't need to rely on downtown Kalamazoo any longer for quality food options. Sleepy little Augusta - where my parents used to take my brother and I to The Park Theater for movies - has quite the place for food and drinks. My wife and I had been talking about trying it for several months and were glad we finally did. The staff were very welcoming upon our arrival. We didn't have a reservation but managed to snag the last 4-top they had. The menu was diverse but not too expansive as to imply a lack of focus. My pork chop was cooked to perfection and my wife was in heaven thanks to the mashed potatoes. Our kids found happiness in smoked chicken wings and spicy drunken shrimp (both apps and plenty of food for our kids). My Canal Manhattan drink was very tasty and well made. We are looking forward to going back and supporting this tremendous addition to the area.

I have eaten here many times and always found the food to be very good and appropriately priced. The wait staff has been very good with the exception of the last meal when our wait person did not bring a beverage refill upon request until my food was cold. When she brought my bill she asked if I still wanted more beverage, by which time I asked for simply a little water. Otherwise, all my visits have been very satisfying.

One of the best burgers I've ever had, and I'm a burger freak! This is my dad's favorite restaurant, I've been a few times with him and it never disappoints. The service is as amazing as their food whichis all local Michigan fare! If you haven't been, Go, it will soon Be a favorite.

I chose this restaurant because it had five stars. I wanted a nice place to take out of town guests for lunch. I gave it three stars mainly because the service was slow and we had to ask for refills. There was plenty of food. Wish the salads were not so saturated with dressing. It cost $60 (not including tip) for four people to have lunch. I would have gladly paid if the server had been a bit more attentive.

Stopped in looking for a decent dinner and were attracted by the use of local ingredients and all scratch made foods. Had the New York strip with garlic butter and it was fantastic. Will definitely come back A few friends had the kabobs with rice and unfortunately those were not good. Another member of our party had the pork chop, which was a great size and perfectly cooked. Overall we all agreed we would go back and the servers and staff were very engaging.

We are regulars here. Since good food options are minimal in Battle Creek, we are happy to make the drive to Canal Street in Augusta. They offer more healthy, flavorful and locally-sourced fare than anywhere you can find in BC. My partner loves the Michigan-only draught beer selections. I love the Bloody Marys with fried pork belly (big slab of thick bacon) on Saturdays. Our extremely picky seven-year-old even says the grilled cheese is the best he's had. Never had a bad meal here, great service and a wonderful atmosphere.

I am a foodie to the extreme supreme, even traveling various places to try delicious foods in wonderful places--and this place is a nothing short of extraordinary. Lol In all seriousness: This tucked-away delight is very cozy, friendly, inviting, and delicious--not to mention, in between both Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, only three minutes away from my little country house! I am always happy to make the trip with my fellow foodie friends. Everything on the menu has a mouth-watering, savory taste and has never, ever been disappointing. Ohhh, and the dessert menu. My, oh my. The chef is amazing as well as the entire staff. They always make us feel welcomed back every time we return. If I didn't have such a busy schedule, I would seriously love to eat here several times a week.

What a fantastic gem for this town! The Barking Frog? Eh. Canal Street Cafe? Fantastic! A mother and daughter own this establishment and their love spills into every plate. Their farm to table mentality is not lost on Augusta. The ingredients are fresh and the recipes are inventive. The ribeye was great and the star of my meal was the homemade carrot cake. YUM. Although delicious, my whitefish had 3 bones in it before I gave up eating it. With the plating, they have this beautiful food on a round, cafeteria style plate. There is also not much pizzaz on their sides. You get a huge serving of veggies and plain white rice with many dishes. Also, the atmosphere is not very exciting or romantic. We paid $100 for 4 drinks, dinner and a dessert, so, I really would like more of an upscale dining experience for that cost. Nevertheless, this is a restaurant that you need to try if you are in the area! I will probably stay away from the fish and stay with pork or steak.
