Nothing special about this place. Generic menu followed by bland food. The flavors and flair of Mexico are missing from this location. Was hoping for a lot more from this place but left with an overwhelming feeling of disappointment.

Was working out of town, looking for Mexican food for supper so a co-worker and I found this place. Wasn't very good. Generic Mexican restaurant with lots of food to choose from and they all look and taste the same. Rice was way overcooked and had been sitting a loooong time. Refried beans were runny, greasy and bland. My carnitas was dry and also overcooked. Our margarita's were very large, made of imitation lime flavoring and hardly any alcohol. I would not go here again. I would have given it one star, but the wait staff were friendly, prompt and nice.

Standard fare Mexican greasy spoon. It's dark, dirty, and understaffed by local youth who are friendly and work hard. The portions are large but plating is sloppy. The food is good. It gets a C+ for taste. There is no creativity in this kitchen. Waterville is a struggling blue collar town so there isn't much room for too many high end eateries. The margaritas are made with flavored syrup ( I asked my waitperson about ingredients.) My enchilada was supposed to have shredded beef; it had ground beef-- I never eat anything with ground beef. )

Pretty good restaurant for cheap and straightforward Mexican. Huge margaritas and complimentary chips and salsa. Everything I've had here has been satisfying and for a decent price. They even do take-out, which is great if you're craving something different for your solo dinner at home.

Disgusting. Found a hair in our food, And they blamed us. It was cooked in.... Gross food, horrible staff.

Pleasantly surprised, especially after my awful Tex-Mex experience, last week. A business colleague suggested, and since he's a good guy and I was his guest, it was not my place to be a contrarian. I like it when I arrive at a restaurant and the chips show up right after sitting down. The chips and salsa were great (as noted by other reviewers). I had the beef taco combo; two beef tacos, refried beans, and rice. Just the right amount of meat, lettuce and cheese on the tacos. Hot sauce from table added for some "zing," which made it perfect for my palette. A reasonably-priced lunch time spot, in downtown Waterville, serving some really good Mexican fare--I call it a winner.

It's ok for Maine. There's better in the 'ville.

For a little taste if Mexico in central Maine, this is hard to beat. Good service with nice ambience. I had the fajita combo which was very good a the flavor. It was a little light on the guacamole though, part of why only 4 stars. Salsa was very good with above average chips. Didn't make it to the dessert menu and didn't try out the bar. All in all, nice ambiance, good food, good service, and for central Maine a nice break away from the family diner.

Here's the scoop - I'm a Texan, so if you're gonna offer me some Mexican food in Maine - well son - it better be damn good!! I would have never stopped into this place if it weren't for the fact it was July 4th and everything else was closed in town. We saw several people on the outdoor patio enjoying margaritas and I said fine, lets do this. My expectations were LOW as any Texan would set them getting Mexican in Maine. The chips and salsa weren't too bad actually. Not my cocaine addiction ones that I get at my favorite place down the road from where I work, but very edible. My margarita was mediocre though. The owner came out to talk to us and I explained my dilemma in ordering anything. He insured me I would not be dissatisfied in the slow steamed pork burrito with salsa verde. So I said sure, make me your best. Let me tell you that thing was so good. The pork was so tender and seasoned just right. Not over salted and bursting with juicy flavors. And the salsa verde had just enough spice. I was surprised I must say. I would recommend that if you go there.

This place is a mixed bag. Some things are excellent, some are just okay. Margaritas: the fruity ones are decent. the Patron margarita was super! but it definitely had a top shelf price tag to go with that top shelf tequila. My advice is, before you order a drink, find out how much the drink costs. It's pretty far from Mexico all the way to central Maine, and perhaps that is why the fancy margaritas seem even more expensive here than they do in Boston. Entrees: mostly meat, but there are vegetarian items (such as chiles rellenos). I am not sure what kind of cheese they are using. I kind of suspect that there is American cheese involved, possibly even heavily involved. The queso was pretty good (hey, we love chili con queso nearly everywhere -- although see my review of Ruby Tuesday for evidence that it's possible to encounter inedible queso), but the cheese in the entrees just got weird. If it wasn't American cheese, it sure *seemed* like American cheese, which is essentially just as weird. Not particularly impressed with the entrees. Desserts: they all sounded PHENOMENAL. I had the fried ice cream (yes, they put caramel on it instead of chocolate for me, since I'm allergic to chocolate) and it was extremely delicious. I kept remarking about how delicious it was the entire time I was eating it. Really psyched to go back and try another one of the desserts. They have sopapillas! It is SO hard to find sopapillas in Maine. Looking forward to those! They also have some kind of fried cheesecake thing. I don't know, but, I mean ... fried cheesecake, right? That's bound to be good. Service: very good, no problems at all, and very friendly. Atmosphere: kitschy, cool, big plastic palm trees, that sort of thing. cheery, friendly atmosphere. There is also an attached bar, which we have not tried yet. Summary: probably among the best Mexican food places in central Maine. That's not really saying so much, since there aren't very many of them, but FOR THE AREA it is better than average, especially the desserts.

All the positive reviews on here are definitely written by the owners! The reality is its about as authentic as Taco Bell on a bad day, we saw no singing or dancing of any sort in fact we didn't even see a waiter for about ten minutes to be fair the chips and salsa were really good beyond that it left a cheap below fast food quality taste in my mouth that I hope to never be exposed to again. If you've ever eaten anything Mexican that didn't come from a can or a drive through window trust me pass this place by and don't look back!

Cancun meets my Mexican food needs very well. The food is delish and always taste fresh. The complimentary chips and salsa are excellent. The menu is varied and there is takeout. When I feel like Mexican on the run, I order the Special Quesadilla (2 quesadillas) plus sides of guac and black beans, all for under $20. You also get a small container of their excellent salsa w/bag of chips. It is more than enough to feed the husband & me. The interior is a bit kitsch with singing waiters and I love it. The waiters are friendly, fast and efficient.

Cancun serves authentic, delicious Mexican food. It is on a little sidestreet right off Main street in downtown Waterville, next to the Last Unicorn. When you walk in the door, you will be greeted with "Hola amigos!" and a big smile. The chips and delicious salsa were on the table almost before I was completely seated. The decor is casual with booth or bar seating, fake palm trees and colorful streamers hanging from the ceiling. Loud, cheerful, Mexican music permeates the dining area and the bustling Mexican waiters sing along as they serve your food. The food is authentic Mexican: Please put away any preconceived notions you may have of Taco Bell or Marguerita's style so called "Mexican" restaurants. The dishes are hearty and satisfying, always served with rice and refried beans on the side. Make sure to tell the waiter if you want guacamole and/or sour cream as it won't automatically come with your meal: You will have to order each as an individual side. Mexican food is so rare in Maine, let alone anything remotely authentic, Cancun is a real find! They also have free Wifi access for patrons. Fair warning: If it's your birthday, the waiters will pop paper bags VERY loudly right by your table and make you wear a big sombrero hat. I was about ten tables away when the popping started and nearly spilled my drink in shock.

I love HECTOR the owner of this place. I work at a summer camp in the area and this is one of our favorite watering holes. The drinks are strong and not expensive. The chips and salsa are delicious, everyone is friendly and we always have a blast here. Great outdoor patio. I've never actually eaten a meal here, but the drinking situation at this place is solid.

Ive definitely had better mexican food in other parts of the country but for being in the very uncultured waterville Maine it's not bad! Staff is great, and prices are reasonable. Believe it or not the best thing they serve are there wings...

For my wife, Simone's, birthday I asked her where she would like to go and eat, it didn't really matter as I I took her to my favorite place in Waterville, Cancun Mexican Restaurant located on Silver Street. Luckily, its one of hers also. From the moment you walk through the front door you are greeted with smiles from the staff led by the owner Hector. If you are lucky enough to be there on a Friday or Saturday night you may also be treated to a great Mariachi player who takes requests and plays everything from Shakira to that guy who sings Feliz Navidad. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was pretty busy but we were seated as soon as we arrived ( we have been there on other nights and had to wait 20-30 minutes). The waiter took our drink order and then quickly brought our basket of warm fresh fried tortilla chips and house made salsa. The salsa at Cancun is my favorite anywhere. It tastes fresh and is heavy in cilantro, its not chunky, but more of a crushed tomato consistency and has a mild to medium heat (depending on who made it that day). If you like it as much as I do then ask to bring some home- they will load up as much as you want to go and its for less then you can buy it at the supermarket. Just for the hell of it , Simone and I glanced at the menu for about thirty seconds and then went for our usual orders . Simone choose the Special Quesadilla (perhaps named that because its especially good). The Quesadilla comes as a single or double order and is filled with Shredded Chicken, Re-fried Beans, Green Chili's, and Mexican cheese and is then grilled to a perfect crisp and served with shredded lettuce, a tomato slice with a side of Sour Cream and that green stuff that Simone calls Guacamole ( seriously, I have never met a Guacamole I have liked but she tells me this one is good). Simone, the lightweight was only able to down half of her order. I almost always order my favorite slow cooked beer tequila an coke marinated Pork Carnitas dinner, if not that, I will order the Pork filled Burrito Roquetas . Tonight was Burrito night. The Burrito Roquetas come as a double order of soft shell tortillas stuffed very generously and then rolled with wickedly moist and tender shredded Carnita Pork. The tortillas are then drowned in a cheesy , Sour Cream Queso sauce and Green Tomatatillo Sauce. On the side is a hearty portion of mild Re fried Beans, Fresh Diced Pico De Gallo, and some of the best Mexican Fried Rice I have ever had (sometimes I have to get a double order of this) If I ever feel the need to take somebody else's life ( and you know who you are) when I'm sitting on death row and they ask me what my final meal will be - I'm telling them Burrito Roquetas- with a side of Mexican Rice- with some Salsa and chips. I would also suggest trying out the Carne Asada, The Choriepollo, The Chimichangas, Colorado Pork and for Dessert the Chocochimi is a must. This is great, authentic, Mexican Food produced by a kitchen that knows how to cook, and a staff that knows how to have fun. 4.5 Stars

My teenage son and I are from out of town and were looking for a decent restaurant. This place was not highly recommended by the hotel but after our dinner I felt strongly about giving it the credit it deserves. We arrived during an unexpected rush and they were grossly understaffed. Regardless, we were warmly welcomed by all and they went out of their way to accommodate our every request. The chips and salsa were wonderful as were our main meals. Even though the staff was hustling our food came out fast and hot: we never waited for more than a few minutes for anything. Actually, its one of the few restaurants I've been where the staff worked solidly together as a team. It was a special place that I hope I can visit again soon.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food but I love Cancun's. The portions are always generous and the wait staff have always been friendly. Tonight was no exception. I ordered the Yolandas, which are a chicken enchilada in a tomatillo sauce and they were delicious. I could only get through about one and a half though (three come to a plate) because they were so filling. My only real complaint was the gross overuse of cilantro in both the salsa and the guacamole. The guacamole could have used a touch more acidity from lime juice to cut through the richness. Overall it was a great visit.

Solid 4 stars for food. Service probably a 2. All the plates were good (tamales, enchiladas, burritos, etc). We tried all the meats (chicken, beef, pork, etc) and all were awesome. Skip the rice and beans - they were nothing special. Good portion fried ice cream and decent sopapillas. Service was cold and very, very slow. I'd go back for the great food with low expectations of servers.

Cancun is a low budget Mexican restaurant in Waterville, Maine. The pros are that the prices are very inexpensive and the portions are enormous. The cons are that the restaurant is charmless and the food is low quality. If you're a hungry college student on a budget, this is your place. If you have money and taste buds, or prior experience with good Mexican food, go elsewhere.

Huge portions for cheap prices. Food was very good overall, excellent stuffed peppers and meaty burritos, lots of fresh veggies. Nachos were made/served with queso, resulting in soggy chips, fresh cheese is better.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
