We stopped in for breakfast before taking the ferry to North Haven. It was not busy,on a Saturday morning, which I thought was odd . Too bad for those who missed this spot! It was terrific! I ordered the Eggs Benedict-wow,only $8.50.They were cooked perfectly. My 3 friends also ordered egg dishes and were very happy. While I waited for the Eggs I looked at the pastries in the case and decided to try a blueberry muffin.OMG was it great! I should have ordered a dozen to go! A friendly staff, casual atmosphere and just a few blocks form the ferry terminal.Try it!

The sandwiches are just plain delicious! And the desserts - you just can't say no. Every now and again you HAVE to have pot pie. It's addictive. They DELIVER!

While I don't usually like places where you have to order at the counter and then go pick up your food when it's ready, I didn't mind doing either of those things at this cute and comfy place in Rockland. This town which neighbors Camden doesn't get the throngs of tourists that make dining in Camden a pain at times. It's seat yourselves here and we easily found a booth. Most of the other patrons, based on snippets of conversation I heard, seemed to be locals and there is a relaxed, unhurried vibe here. The restaurant is on the street level in a nice older low brick building. The inside had some pretty exposed brick and other vintage details. Inside it was light, bright and clean. There were lots regular menu options and a blackboard of the day's specials including an impressive array of omelettes, pancakes and typical breakfast fare. I was surprised to see biscuits and gravy on the menu as that isn't a typical dish found on East Coast menus. I ordered an egg breakfast sandwich and my husband, a ham, cheese and vegetable omelette. Both came with home-fries. We each had coffee. The food was delicious. The home-fries were nicely browned yet still soft in the center as they should be. My husband's toast was whole grain and good he said. There are a number of urns of coffee available and fixings for hot tea at a beverage bar along with a variety of juices. Water and ice are similarly available. There is a lot of colorful local art on the walls which added a nice decorative touch. The prices are quite reasonable. No doubt the ordering at the counter and self-serve aspects help keep costs down. There is one uni-sex bathroom and although two bathrooms would be better, the one here was clean. This was a great choice for an easy going pleasant breakfast. I'd definitely return again, maybe next time for lunch.

Always my "go to" when I'm in Rockland and have time for breakfast or lunch. I've had great baked goods, tasty breakfasts, and stellar sandwiches here. The specials are always a good option, and prove to be pretty varied. Just his morning I had a wonderful blueberry buttermilk waffle and sausage links for breakfast. Everyone swears by the fresh baked turkey sandwiches and pot pies. Heads up, sometimes the wait for your order can be long - don't go if you're short for time. If you're ok to hang about, go for it!

I don't write reviews, this is my first. After eating here though, I felt like I had to say something. The Brown Bag has been in Rockland for years. 27 according to their website. Years ago I had a friend that worked here, so I would eat here quite frequently. I can't remember ever having a bad meal. I don't know if things have changed since then, if they were having a bad day, or if it was because we came in close to closing time, but the sandwiches that we had were horrible. We didn't finish them, and took the leftovers home with us, thinking the dogs would like it. Our dogs, that literally eat sh*t, wouldn't eat any of them. I had the tuna melt. How hard is it to make a tuna melt? Apparently harder than I thought, because what I was served was horrible. First of all it was cheap tuna. It had a strong smell and the flavor was off. According to their website their tuna salad is made with the "finest Albacore tuna". I call BS. I'd think a sandwich shop, that's been around for so long, and is so beloved in the community, would have a tuna salad that would have some flavor added to it. Some onion or celery or something but there was nothing. Then the sandwich itself had nothing added for any flavor. The website says it's made with provolone, and I don't recall if the menu board hanging over the counter said that. I like provolone, but it was way too mild for this sandwich, and since the cheap tuna had such an overpowering flavor, I couldn't really even taste the cheese. Not that there was much cheese on the sandwich to taste. The bread was probably the best part of the sandwich, and was grilled well, but I wanted a sandwich, not toast. I think that I could have gone to Subway and had a toasted tuna sub there that would have tasted better than this sandwich and would have been cheaper. The person I was with was equally dissatisfied with her sandwich and she was right to be. It was a special for the day and unfortunately I don't remember exactly what was on it. It was turkey, which is something they apparently roast in house, but they might want to reconsider that since it was just about the blandest and driest turkey I've ever tasted. Then there was a cranberry mayo, which could have been tasty, but there wasn't enough on it to taste. There was some cheese, and lettuce and tomato. The bread was pretty good, it would have been better toasted, but the girl that took our order didn't ask if that was something we'd like. The whole sandwich was just a disappointment and not worth the money. I had a bottle of soda and my partner had a cup of coffee. Total cost was $22 and it what we had wasn't worth that at all. I'm wondering how they've lasted for so long. Maybe it's because they're pretty much the only sandwich shop in town. We went to Rockland on the day that our normal lunch spot is closed, and on our way to our second choice we passed this place and thought we'd try something different. Bad move. I know there's lots of people in the area that love this place and I'm left wondering why. The reviews here either focus just on the bakery part, which based on the bread we had is probably good, and the other ones that are positive rave about their breakfasts and lobster and crab rolls. Lobster and crab rolls are one of the simplest things to make. Eggs and home fries are fairly simple to do too. I may stop in to grab a cookie in the future, but I'm never going to waste my time (such an incredibly long wait for two sandwiches) or my money there again.

We have tried blueberry pie everywhere we vacation in Maine and The Brown Bag has the best by far! Actually all their baked goods are fantastic and the staff is very friendly.

I'm so glad we chose this place for lunch. I ordered the homemade lentil burger and it was delicious (so much so that it is a week later and I keep thinking about it, and I'm not a vegetarian). The chocolate chip cookies are huge and are really good. I didn't really like the peanut butter balls, but that cookie is one of the best! (I just read some other reviews - yes, service was slow, count on that, but it was worth the wait.)

My husband and I eloped to Rockland, and I literally googled a bakery in town to order my cake... And God could not have ordered my steps any more perfectly. The bakery had me deal with Elaine, who was THE most easy going person I've ever worked with. I emailed her photos of what I wanted, told her what flavor we wanted, and all I ever heard was, "No problem, dear." I'll post pics of the cake when our photographer finishes processing/editing everything, but here's what we ordered: Lemon cake, 8in, three layers, fresh blueberry filling between layers, buttercream icing, and fresh blueberries on top. Lemme tell ya... We got EXACTLY what we wanted, and it was the best cake we've ever had. I called Elaine the week before the wedding to confirm details, and she had everything under control. She even told me she'd picked up a cake pedestal at a tag sale with me in mind, and offered it to me to borrow. I already had my great aunt's silver platter packed, but the thought speaks to how amazingly sweet she is. When I picked up the cake, it looked exactly like the photo. EXACTLY. She gave me instructions on how long to keep it refrigerated to keep the icing hard (to prevent damage), and told me about the filling: She'd originally made the filling and mixed it with buttercream icing, but she said she knew we were going to be taking it to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse to be married -- and it wouldn't be refrigerated. So the filling with the icing wouldn't work. So instead, she made homemade, hand-whipped cream and mixed THAT with the blueberry filling. It tasted amazing, and she said that would stand being room temperature better. She was right -- we ate on that cake for the last five days of our trip, and it was unrefrigerated and still every bit as amazing as when we first cut it. Wanna know how much this amazing cake was? $48. Yep. That's it. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I hugged Elaine before I left, and wish I could hug her again. She's a gem, and that woman can BAKE A CAKE.

some things dont change. the preposterously and perpetually slow service irks me every time, to the point i havent been in for sevefal years, that is until today. once again, a delicious bagel sandwich marred by a nearly twenty minute wait. come on brown bag, the dining room was empty, no one in the room when i ordered. you can do better. it,s almost as if one is pegged as from away and an extra 10 minutes is tacked on. it takes nearly three minutes to fry an egg and toast a bagel. i know the pile of bacon and hash browns are ready. you , brown bag, yes you, can do better. the onion bagel toasted perfect slathered in warm cream cheese contains an over easy egg and several slices of bcon. excellent. just make sure you leave yourself at least twenty minutes for any item on the menu, lunch sanwiches, cold sandwiches, hot breakfast plates. all good, just not if want food now.

Felt deceived on this one for lunch. The bakery looked tempting but we were hungry. The staff was very nice but the food was good on concept and poor on execution. Friend ordered a special- Maine crab sandwich (the best part was they offered gluten-free bread). The sandwich had a good amount of crab and one piece of lettuce- not enough flavor and did not look too appetizing. I chose a special also- pita sandwich with baby spinach, roasted peppers and mozz. Again, teh concept was good but the pita was split so was like bread, the spinach was one single layer (why not stuff it?) and the rst just didn;t balance. It was kind of sad. I ordered a side of sweet potatoe fries and they were good but no dipping sauce was offered. I will defeinetly skip this on my travels through Mid-Coast Maine- except to try some baked goods.
