You like mussels? Rustica's are some of the best I've ever eaten. The rest of their food is just as good. My wife and I moved here from New Jersey a few months ago. Every town in NJ has at least two Italian restaurants. So we've got quite a bit of experience and criteria when it comes to good Italian food. Rustica meets the challenge. The staff is pleasant and indulgent. If you're in the area you owe yourself a visit to this etablishment.

We had a phenomenal meal here while visiting Rockland -given how packed it was at 6:30, looks like others like this place as well. Very good wine list (including a lovely prosecco). For a starter we had the calamari fritti, which was fantastic. The breading on the calamari was very light, and I thought the addition of the banana peppers was spot on- I can remember the vinegary burst of flavor I had biting into them! We all had the Grilled Bistro Steak, another home run. Each steak was perfectly cooked as ordered, the matchstick potatoes were phenomenal, and the stacked tomatoes were out of this world. Portion wise it was huge - and all three of us finished ours and had very clean plates afterwards. Dessert I had the gelato - big portion, it was ok nothing earth shattering. I intend to eat here the next time I am anywhere near Rockland!

Late lunch today. Nice farfalle pasta With grilled chicken and broccoli in olive oil, hot pepper flakes garlic and sun dried tomatoes. Nice size chunks of moist chicken and fresh broccoli with appropriate amounts of pepper and garlic. The dish would be better with no sun dried tomatoes. Seasonal amber ale was tasty. Surprisingly little use of local seafood incorporated into the menu.

WOW! I am up in Rockland Maine for work and I am from Boston. I am a frequent eater in Boston's North End and I can guarantee that the food here could EASILY make it on Hanover street in the North End! Good portions, Great food, Decent Prices, Overall GREAT experience, I WILL go back!

Food was fantastic. Our group of just over a dozen ordered various plates. All were excellent, with incredibly good flavor. I'll recommend the Mussels for an appetizer. As a bonus, the large bowl with broth was great for bread-dipping! It's a white-tablecloth restaurant. If you're from away, it may not be up to the standards of NYC's finest, but a great local restaurant nonetheless.

Our 4th year stopping here. Walked in at 6pm and hit one of the last open tables. We ordered the mussels, which if you get nothing else, would be enough to impress upon you the skill in this kitchen. Fried artichoke salad was refreshing and tangy. Chix marshals since they were out of veal was a hit. I ordered the spaghetti marinara and added shrimp. Great red gravy, really great. Last entrée was shrimp and lobster gnocchi. Absolutely one of the best gnocchi we have ever had. Definitely the fluffiest. Quick attentive service. Water glasses always topped off. $125.befire tip..with One glass of wine.

First trip to Rockland and this is hands down the the best Italian I have had North of Boston. Ate on Saturday night, it was busy but the service was excellent and it was a great atmosphere. Chicken parm was awesome. Cavatelli is freshly made on premise and is highly recommended.

Truly one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had (the one with the fried egg-plant). Great ambiance, excellent staff, tall genoursly poured drinks... really cannot say anything bad about this place. Being from LA, I didn't know what to expect out of these type of small town East-Coast restaurants. I wasn't dissapointed :-)

A very pleasant surprise. We had an ice storm at our home, lost power so we headed south and stayed in Rockland. Around the corner from our hotel was this small but intimate Italian Restaurant. The service was outstanding and the ambiance very nice. Slightly pricey for what they had, but the food was authentic Italian. Veal Marsala, $24.00 with a side dish of Penne Bolognese very good. House made meatballs, house made gnocchi. Next time there I'll try the Pork & Green Chile Stew $20.00 sounds interesting. We will go back.

We came here after having a RUDE hostess at Cafe Miranda turn us off. The service here was incredibly attentive. The food was wonderful. The only think that is worth a bit of a complaint is the pricing. I think all of the meals are $4-5 more than they need to be. Also, as much as they are charging they could at least include a small side salad with meals.

Busy Italian restaurant with candlelit tables and dark decor. We came in on a late Saturday night without a reservation and were seated in about 20 minutes. Food wasn't spectacular but it was good and homey. The spaghetti and homemade meatballs was the standout dish. A little pricey but not too bad.

Great meal! I had the margarita pizza and my friend had pasta with Bolognese sauce - each were terrific! Our meal started with warm bread and olive oil from Fiore (located down the street; we stopped in before we left Maine and picked up several bottles). Good wine list, and for dessert, I had an Affogato with salted caramel ice cream (instead of vanilla) - the perfect finish to a wonderful evening. This place fills up early, so be sure to make a reservation.

Nice atmosphere and had a very good server. The spaghetti and meatballs was quite tasty, however there was way too much sauce on the pasta. Prices were quite steep for a spaghetti and meatball dinner $19.00 and $7.00 for a very small Caesar Salad. Hey, this is Rockland not the north end of Boston where even there their menu pricing would be on the high side.

    Best Italian in Midcoast Maine!

Had daily soup and the chicken saltimbocca. Tomato soup with kale and sausage was hot but wan and thin of body and flavor...except for enormous slices of raw garlic. Not an herb in sight. I asked for the chicken (the ingredients sound like a fresh take on this classic dish) to be made with no additional salt and every aspect of this dish arrived hot but totally flavorless. Again, no herb to be had. If you want food that has no taste except salt and raw garlic, this is your spot. Service, however, was very good and the place has decent "atmosphere." I have never understood why this place is so busy. Second poor meal there (of two).

Salad was unique and great. Pasta was homemade and sauce was delicious. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Ordered the calamari and the stuffed mushrooms. Calamari had both an aioli and marinara sauce. Both were good. But there needed to be at least two more mushrooms for the portion to be worth it. Not quite enough. Friendly bartender. Made a great dirty martini. I'd go back.

Excellent food, large portions for the price. One of my favorite places in Rockland!

Ate there last night. Wish they would open one in NYC! Amazing food.

I thought this place was just ok for lunch. The pizzas and paninis looked good when they were served, but everything kind of tasted the same, as if the ingredients had been pre-cooked and reheated and so lost their oomph (particularly the sauteed onions). Service was slow and there were a couple of small errors on the bill, so all in all we didn't feel great about our experience. The best dish we had was a starter of lightly battered calamari, which also included some banana pepper pieces that raised the flavor profile. Prices were fair for the most part, but we felt a bit ripped off by the $11 beet/goat cheese salad, which turned out to be a green salad with a few pieces of beet and cheese. The quality was high, but the portion was not meal sized, for that price. Maybe dinner is better!

very good food. Over 2 dinners, I've tried spicy shrimps, artichoke salad, seafood linguine and bistro steak. Everything was delicious (except the artichokes, which I would have preferred grilled or marinated than fried). Nice staff. On the downside, it is a little noisy, and you may have to wait a little (no reservation for parties under 5).

Excellent Italian! This place was recommended to us by a local couple. We enjoyed our grilled eggplant bundles stuffed with ricotta and mushrooms, the seafood chowder and the farfalle with shrimp and artichokes in a light marinara. Would have preferred a more traditional cannoli for dessert, but still a very sweet to end the meal.

For lunch, this was a solid (but not exciting) dining option. We started with the beet salad, which included layers of beets and goat cheese, with a mound of fresh greens in a tasty vinaigrette; it was well made and had a farm fresh flavor. The ziti with meat sauce was extremely good, topped with a scoop of fresh mozzarella and a dab of pesto. The eggplant parm panini was delicious, grilled crisp and served piping hot. The couscous on the side was flavorless, though, and the additional greens unnecessary. The service was polite, if bumbling at times, but for a local "Italian" restaurant it was acceptable. Overall, an above average destination, at least for lunch.

Great little Italian place in the middle of town. I had a pesto cream sauce with pasta, and it was wonderful! And the prices were quite reasonable. Definitely worth your while to check out if you're in town and looking for some good, quality Italian food.

This was a fabulous restaurant for a fairly small seaside town. I had Veal Marsala that was the best I have EVER tasted. Also had a roasted artichoke salad that was outstanding. The wait staff was very attentive without hanging on too much. Very pleasant atmosphere. I was there early around 6 for dinner - by the time I left around 7, the restaurant was very full.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
