This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall. Went here on Wednesday morning for breakfast. Ordered eggs benedict with crabmeat salad and sausage gravy & biscuits. Love their benedict, it is like an orgasm in mouth. It's funny that their small-size orange juice is like only 80 ml. The place welcomed mostly senior customers and the waitress was very nice. The breakfast made up to the depression by the shitty weather and kept me happy all day long.

    Excellent lobster!

Grumpy waitress and no substitutions. This is the only place ever where you can't substitute fries for a side salad, not even with an extra fee. The food was decent but low-ish quality. My haddock sandwich was served on a hamburger bun and was unimpressive. M got the "famous" fish cake and haddock chowda and barely managed to finish either. Walking by, you'd think it was a small town diner with a local (fish) spin to the typical menu, but the food wasn't cheap enough to be a dive and it wasn't quaint enough to be an attraction. I would probably look somewhere else next time...

Fried shrimp is always excellent but the portion size seems to have gotten smaller since last year. The fries though, are awful.

Cool little breakfast place. There's a lobster tank, which happened to be in the middle of being restocked, as soon as you walk in which is different from your typical breakfast joint. I had the fishcake benedict which was really good. Awesome home fries. Fast service. Waitress was a tad abrasive and the orange juice was terrible. But definitely a recommended place if you're in the area.

Only okay. I like a quaint diner & the staff were friendly, but I have had better lobster rolls (cheaper) at the Thai Tugboat hut by the ferry. In fairness, I only had the lobster roll plate. I'm not speaking to the rest of the menu. The fries, however, were awful -- soggy and clearly reheated.

Came here twice during the week I was in the area, once for lunch and once for breakfast. For lunch, I ordered the fried clam bellies with mashed potatoes and mix vegetables. The fried clam bellies were average as the bellies were not "big". However, it was a generous portion. For breakfast, I had the shrimp omelet and it was average as well as it lacked flavor. Service was good though, as the waitresses were attentive.

excellent food and good coffee. WAY better than some other places in near towns. There is a fantastic bakery up the street called Atlantic Bakery. There is only one main street in Rockland and its short so you cant miss it. Its cute.

We got take-out so I'm not critiquing the table service, but the counter service was fast and friendly. Although, they were a little inaccurate and we scored and extra fried calm dinner because of this so, in the end, everybody was a winner. Peter Rollins gives 5 stars to the fried seafood and the place itself looked like the kind of place Peter could sit all morning and drink coffee in. Go in, have a seat, order some coffee. Oh yeah, be sure to tell them Peter Rollins sent you.

Great food, good lobster, happy employees and a great atmosphere. Good restaurant for meat eaters, vegetarians and seafood eaters. Definitely recommend!

  • Dexter M.

Poor service and poor food. The clam chowder was runny, the lobster roll was all mayo, the fish and chips were over battered and of poor quality, the fish meat was clear in color and had a soggy, snot like consistency. The Whoopi pie was stale. An all around bad restaurant. The one exception was the seafood stew(or chowder). Haddock, scallops, lobster, and clams. The plethora of seafood was actually quite good and worth eating, which is more than I can say about the rest of the food we ate.

    (1)
  • Matt E.

Greasy spoon, plain and simple. Typical diner except they have a ton of seafood on the menu and a lobster tank in the front. The prices are dirt cheap on most things which is great. I ordered clam chowder and they gave me fish chowder; my girlfriend ordered potato skins and she got a plate with a mound of about 5 pounds of greasy potato skins which were pretty gross; and we both ordered fried scallops which were small, bland, and the batter kept slipping off. I wouldn't come here for seafood but I'm sure this is a great place to get a traditional diner styled breakfast or pudding or something of that nature.

This is a small down home place to eat. I have only ever ordered breakfast here. Every time it has been perfect and the prices are reasonable. Waitstaff are friendly and stop by all the time to ask if you need anything. Give it a try.

At 5:30 in the morning, your appetite is surprisingly very picky. Get the wrong thing and your day is shot, mentally and physically. Basic eggs, bacon, toast and OJ. Made well, eaten fast, satisfied. Check, tip, gone.

One of those places that reminds me of childhood. Reasonable prices, reasonable food. Pretty good quality and service. Can't go wrong with fried seafood or chowder. They do have plenty of variety for those that aren't fans of things that swim though. The decor is a little tired and dated, but the signs advertising select menu items are fun.

Do I have to give this place a star? I notice many of the other reviews were about breakfast --. We, unfortunately, went to the restaurant for dinner because the restaurant recommended to us was closed. My husband had fish and chips, and I had one of the specials, "haddock with crab stuffing." My haddock was dried out, and if there was any crab in the stuffing, I'd be surprised. My husband, who is not one to EVER complain, grimaced after taking a bite of his fish. The waitress came over and actually tried to explain to us why the food was so bad, and that only after we flagged her down to please give us our check. I always tip generously, but not this time. It was just an awful experience.

In August this year, my son, Matthew, and I drove from Boston to Thomaston, Maine to see a friend. We took the 95 North up through Massachusetts, though the rolling green hills in New Hampshire, and past the rugged, coastal scenery of Southern Maine. It was awesome. We drove a bit further north to a small Maine seaport town, Rockland, and had dinner at the Rockland Café. The Rockland Café is a family style restaurant on Main Street in downtown Rockland. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Being near the sea, however, seafood is the draw. I had fried scallops with baked potato, cole slaw, bread, and Caesar salad ($11.99). Matt had the Maine shrimp dinner that came with the same sides ($12.99). The food was good, the seafood fresh, the service friendly, the atmosphere casual, it's what you'd expect from a local New England seafood café... The menu offers a wide range of items from prime rib to sandwiches to lobster. And, for Yelpers who can really pack it in, they offer all-you-can-eat seafood specials 7 days a week; Wednesday is all you can eat spaghetti and meatballs with salad and garlic bread for only $6.99. Rockland Café is definitely worth visiting if you're in the area... Their motto: Come as a stranger leave as a friend...

3 1/2 stars . Food is ok Good seafood chowder Very nice soup of day (Turkey noodle, hearty, lots of noodles) & Tuna Sandwich w/fries ($7) Slow service (taking our order, getting our bill, getting the receipt) I'll try another place next time

The seafood is a little pricey as it is everywhere in town, but it was fresh and good. Menu has a wide variety too, if you're not in the mood for seafood.

If you're seeking a decent cup of clam Chowder....or even fish and chips, don't waste your money here. It's poorly cooked and under flavored, to say the least. The service was mediocre at best! So much for small town hospitality.

  • Lori W.

Again...a very local, casual, kid friendly place. We liked it. We had the lobster "BLT". Great atmosphere - just plain and simple, diner-like.

  • Marianne C.

This place reminds me of a typical NYC diner, including the older waitress who has probably worked there forty years and secretly owns the place. I had a basic meal of coffee, scrambled eggs, a toasted bagel, and homefries. Again, I liked it more than the Hoff, who would have given the place three stars. Overall, my eating experiences in Rockland Maine were awesome, so I gave a lot of four stars, which isn't typical for me, so trust me when I say a place is good.

I've eaten here a handful of times now. I keep going back because I am local, and also because I remembered eating here as a child and enjoying it, but I think I've finally learned my lesson. Don't ask for water. You will get disgusting, chlorine-y Rockland tap water. I could hardly drink it. The crabmeat melt that I ordered (toasted English muffin, slice of tomato, scoop of crabmeat, and melted cheese) came to me cold. I asked the waitress if it could be heated up. She said, "Sure," and took it away. Three minutes later it was brought back to me piping hot and as soggy as if it had been boiled. Yup, they microwaved it. The English muffin was the texture of wet bread. I couldn't eat it. I am not sure how they managed it, but my shrimp Ceasar salad came out to me with warm lettuce and cold (sautéed) shrimp. They must've made it and then let it sit for a while. It was disgusting.

Cheap, delicious seafood. Unpretentious little cafe. Solid service. A win. Coming home to New England with my girlfriend (we are definitely food people, she is a chef), we couldn't wait to get some lobster and steamers. Rockland cafe delivered. The seafood chowder was wonderful and we barely had room for some blueberry crisp with a hearty scoop of ice cream. Nothing fancy, but some very solid and well done food that left us full and satisfied for $40. Can't beat that.

I had my very first lobster roll here since another Yelper said it was the best. While I admit it was good, I though it was a little small. There were big chunks of lobster meat, though, and it was served with french fries and coleslaw. It's kind of a divey/homey place. Definitely not fancy. The service was fine. I might go here again to try one of their fried food baskets.

I was working out in rockland for a few days and found this place. They have a pretty interesting menu. I ended up eating the blt lobster roll. There was quit a bit (amazed). I ended up bringing the other half back home. You just come on in and sit yourself. Very family feeling.

The Rockland Cafe is a homey, locally owned "all you can eat seafood" restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you're looking for a warm and creamy cup of chowder or a crispy fried haddock sandwich then this is the place for you. For lunch, I had the lobster sandwich on a kaiser roll with fries. There was not much lobster meat for the price and the fries were a little overdone, yet the meal was tasty. Our server was very friendly and efficient. This restaurant is a good option if you're visiting Maine and want to try the local food!

Driving through Rockland on our lobster feast quest looking for a good lobster roll. Was dissapointed. The place is old, the service was about what u would expect. All that can be overlooked if u got good food. My husband and I both had lobster rolls. I was disappointed with the value. Throughout our trip we found better value and better tasting rolls. Mine was excessively dressed with mayonnaise and had very chewy fishey bites of lobster. I firmly believe i got what was left over from previous days.

This is a great diner place to go. I can eat there everyday. The seafood chowder is the best I tasted. Full of seafood and nice buttery finish. Nicely seasoned well to bring all the natural flavor of the chowder. It's a must when you come visit this restaurant. The haddock cake is my first. It was good. I was tire of fried seafood and opt to get the broiled haddock instead. Love the dish. Great service and really enjoyed the dinner. Definitely a must. They have a little bit of everything even you don't like seafood. It doesn't look like a tourist trap although we were.

  • Rah A.

At first glance I was skeptical of the place. Upon entering it was small without a lot seating and we received a not so professional "greeting." However the food was fresh made-to-order...delicious! Try their local blueberry soda too. Be patience because again the food is made to order. We weren't disappointed when our food arrived. If you're not completely full after dinner try their apple crisp dessert. It was the best ever!

After spending far too much money for a disappointing meal at 3Crow on our first night in Rockland, we came here for night number two. I had the open faced turkey sandwich. My husband had the fried shrimp dinner. Both our meals were yummy - not fancy but yummy and priced right. The service was good and the atmosphere was quaint. Will be back next time we are in Rockland.

Super friendly waitress, food was good. I had the lobster Benedict, my girlfriend had the crab Benedict, both were really good but my lobster was a bit chewy. Other than chewy lobster in Maine, great breakfast.

My review is based on experience not food as we didn't get that far. We tried a few other places that were closed on this particular day. We walked in to a large restaurant with only two patrons. The staff wasn't very welcoming or friendly. We ordered coffee and sat down. After looking at the menu we ended up leaving. The terrible food photography plastered all over the walls and menu put us off. If you're going to have photos of your food on display, they should be appetising. Based on service and menu, we left and went to the Brass Compass 2 min down the footpath where we had a wonderful breakfast!

I wanted to fall in love with this cafe just because I love little dinners, we had breakfast and I ordered biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon and my husband got French toast and the food was OK but I was not left wanting to try something else....I was taken back I think by the curt waitress and rude signs making excuses for the service suggestion it you don't like it to go to McDonald or Burger King

Went in ordered a Rockland Cafe burger or something to that effect I don't care for mushrooms lettuce and tomato so those were held on the side.. overall a great burger my only complaint would have been to saute the onions rather than the way that they were cooked chopped but that is just a preference not that big of a deal. The French fries are great good family restaurant for a small town with decent price and good portions

  • Vinny G.

We stopped here for a late lunch twice and left happy both times. The steamers are terrific. Tender, large, flavorful and little grit. Their crab sandwich, full belly fried clams, and fish cakes are also recommended. The clams were large with a clean fresh flavor and not too much breading. The fish cakes had a bit too much filler but were very inexpensive and more importantly they tasted great. (2 large for $9 if I remember correctly). They tout their seafood soup, but we found it a bit thin on flavor. Overall, very good fresh seafood, friendly efficient service, and fair prices. Worth a stop.

Our family has been coming here for years when we're in the area. Husband always gets the steamed clams. They are some of the best he's had. Yesterday, we tried the Famous Fish cake and a bowl of Seafood Chowder. The fish cake was so tasty, I could have eaten another one! (The menu lists fish cake benedict-i'd imagine that would taste incredible - next time!) The seafood chowder was packed with all kinds of seafood-lobster, shrimp, haddock, clams. And the broth was creamy without being heavy. It was delightful! This is a seat yourself kind of place -however they ask you to wait until a cleared table is available. The staff was very busy but quite attentive. The food arrived timely and was the proper temperature. You'll love this place.

Oh I so wanted to love this place. From the outside the place looked like a great local place with an ole-timer vibe that you couldn't just help but love. So, my girlfriend was pumped for a lobster dinner, and I was just happy to go grab a bite at a local institution. Our server was nice, the menu was vast and while it was Sunday (no specials), she ordered her lobster and ordered haddock. Man I was suprised, even my mashed potatoes and gravy were mediocre at best. My gf lobster was small even for the 1 1/4 which is all they had (I guess it's a season thing but we got bigger 1 1/4 from the supermarket the following day that were better. My haddock was passable, but I won't go back. Sorry but I think this place isn't trying that hard and with so many alternatives in town (Home Kitchen Cafe maybe your best bet for a great sandwich!) then there is no reason to dine on sad excuse for food. Sorry, but it just was that bland.

  • Dan F.

I came in about 5:30 in the morning for a cup of coffee and a bit of breakfast. As I came in, the place was nearly empty apart from groups of older gents from the area talking shop before work like they'd known each other for years. I got a blueberry pancake and a side of home fries, both were great. The lady who served me was really polite and kept my cup full. I read some of the lower-starred reviews having to do with dinner, which I can't speak to. A subset of these seem to be from tourists feeling pretty entitled to some kind of special lobster experience on their vacations. I think maybe these reviewers expect this place to be something it's not. For what it is, a local place with pretty good prices in the middle of the strip downtown, Rockland Cafe is a fine place to give your custom.

Stopped in on a stormy winter day to try the lobster stew. Being right on the coast, in what appeared to be a local gem, I expected more. When I walked in, I was greeted by hearing," hey (waitresses name), you got a live one!" Not my preference of being referred. I ordered the bowl of lobster stew ($16.99) and felt it needed more flavor. Being a lobster fanatic, I also felt it could've been frozen lobster that they used. It had a tough texture and was mostly claws, a less expensive part of the lobster. I tried this place, it was so so, probably won't be back. Sorry!

  • Joyce F.

I'll start by saying the food was ok, hence the 3 Stars. He had a turkey dinner which was good except for the supposed squash which tasted nothing like squash. I had the seafood stew , it was good, but before I ordered it I asked if it was creamy or broth based, the waitress said broth. When she served it, it was not broth based, but cream, she said it was evaporated milk, not cream. She argued with me that creamy meant like clam chowder. I gave up trying to explain since she must not know what broth is. I am borderline lactose intolerant so I don't usually eat that type of food. I must say it was very flavorful, but definitely creamy, not brothy. We both ordered a soft drink, and when the bill came were shocked to see they charged $3 each. I did look back to the menu and the prices were in there, so we couldn't complain, but that's absolutely ridiculous... Sorry we won't be back. Also, the place could be a little cleaner, there were more than a couple flies in the dining area.

Our Innkeeper recommended a few places along our drive up Hiway 1and the only one open when we arrived in Rockland hungry was this one. We were good with that because being from Texas we both wanted a Maine lobster dinner at a local joint. This is a diner - not a restaurant - so don't expect anything fancified. We arrived mid afternoon and except for a couple carry out orders we were the only ones there. So the service was attentive. We sat down and got drinks - they have beers and my dining companion had this fantastic locally bottled blueberry soda from Old Soaker Brewing Company! We shared a small bowl of the clam chowder. It was tasty and warm and had lots of clams and taters. It wasn't the best I ever ate but not the worst. Just knowing it was local and we were on vacation made it better. The lobster dinner was reasonably priced ($20 for a pound and a half). To us that's reasonable because a Maine lobster in Houston will run you almost twice that. Somehow it was unsatisfactory - a bit over cooked or maybe it had been sitting in the tank a while (We hear locals don't really eat the live lobster much). It was better without dipping it in the butter. The fries were home made and tasty and I liked the slaw that came with it. A bit light on the mayo and crisp! All in all we got what we came for...local live Maine lobster and a local joint in a small Maine town along the coast. The waitress was friendly and we left full.

In the land of diners the Rockland Cafe is a standout. All kinds of very fresh seafood from lobster to haddock tastily prepared at rock bottom prices. A pint of whole fried clams for $12.00...pulled pork sandwich $6.49 ...much more. If you come near a meal hour, be prepared to wait.

The construction site in front of this small-town gem didn't seem to be affecting business when we stopped-by for lobster rolls yesterday. We come here at least once per year, but this was the first time we tried the lobster rolls. The rolls were pretty good; packed full of lobster as one of my uploaded photos shows, but definitely a little bland. They could use a little more 'zing', something better than the tobasco we added. The bowl of chowder we had beforehand was also good; runnier than some we have had in the Rockland/Camden area, but a good flavor and full of clams. I'd give the chowder 7 out of 10, the lobster rolls 7.5 out of 10, and the service a healthy 8 out of 10. Potentially better for breakfast than lunch or dinner, but a solid experience every time we have visited. 9 out of 10 for value.

The seafood chowder is delicious. Every spoonful is full of meat and tons of flavor. Highly recommend it.

Came here the day before Thanksgiving with my sister and her husband for lunch. A bowl of the fish chowder, although pricey at $9.00, comes packed with seafood and a rich cream broth that is not too thick. No fried seafood this time, I had a ham club sandwich with a side of coleslaw. Club sandwich was all you can expect from a club - brother in law had the same. My sister ordered a bowl of the clam chowder for her main, also excellent.

Great place that isn't too touristy. We had lobster there twice during our trip. Like that you can order one, two or three lobsters at reasonable prices. The clam chowder was great, and the kid's fish meal is really good too. Fries are fresh cut and excellent! We will be back!

I have been going to the Rockland Cafe since I was a child. I love this cafe and their food. A great place to go if you do not want to dress up, but you want good food. The staff is nice and they are willing to make changes to your meals. Good place to take kids too!

There was no way in hell that I was going to visit Maine and not have a lobster dinner. Since the casual restaurant in my hotel was charging $36 a la carte, I knew I would be able to find a much better deal in town. Enter Rockland Cafe. This no-frills place had a market price of $18.95, which also included two sides. Sold! Now, I'd never eaten a whole lobster before. Usually I'll have it as part of a dish or just a tail, so I don't have to do much work outside of lifting my fork. I'm a Jersey girl so I'm well-versed with seafood in general and I figured picking apart a lobster wouldn't be so different from picking apart a crab. Thank God I was dining solo. My first crack at a claw sent lobster juices flying everywhere. Lobster 1, Cupcake 0. I promptly removed my jacket, rolled up my sleeves, and gave that crustacean the business. The locally brewed Lobster Ale, a red lager, was the perfect beverage for my feast. My server was all business but she called me "hun" a couple times so I figured she would be kind enough to give me some lobster eating tips. When I got to the tail, I asked her for a suggestion on how to get it open and she said, and I quote, "grab it in your fist and squeeze from the bottom." Um, no problem there but the spikey things kind of hurt. I must have looked pathetic because she offered to do it for me, which was great. (You can't really get squeamish about people touching your food when you have an animal's guts on your plate.) This was easily the best lobster I've had to date in life, and I would definitely recommend the spot for anyone who wants a local meal without a hefty price tag.

Family style local place in town. Great big assorted menu. But this is Maine so let's talk reasonably priced local (think really fresh) seafood. Like a plate of sea scallops and fries for $12. How about all you can eat seafood every night of the week. How about clams, lobster, haddock, regular sandwiches. All kinds of pies too. A local gem!

Giving this a five within its category of similar restaurants. A bit of wait, but worth it. Excellent quality in everything and huge portions. Good, friendly service.

What a great surprise, three of us on motorcycles crossing the country pulled in for breakfast, and to our surprise we landed in a gem of a place. The breakfast was outstanding.

It's a diner. It's filled with locals, or what looked like people who'd eaten there before. We had fish and chips, and sauted shrimp, fries, ceasar salad, and tapioca pudding. All were good. The fish and chips were not what I was used to - I've never had them melt in my mouth before, which was awesome. The batter was a little sweet, my companion said. The lunch portion was huge. I'd be a little scared to order the dinner after that, the waitress said it was much larger. The shrimp were local, and very fresh and tasty. It's not the best food I've ever had, but, wow, for the price and convenience of it, if I'm back in the area, I'll be back.

I don't write many reviews. But I have to write this because our experience was so terrible last night (10/08/11). Our server was the greatest. The food was the worst ever. Last night we was our 1st in Maine having just flown in from California. We wanted lobster and thought this would be the place. Wrong. No lobster, only lobster roll available, so we went with that. Calamari appetizer was way overcooked and dry. Lobster roll had very little lobster....all bread and not fresh. Had to send the fish chowder back. Why did the cook put vinegar in the chowder? And so much of it??? Fries were good. Overall, the food we had was just awful. I had to write this as this Yelp didn't get this place right. Avoid this restaurant if you want great seafood!

The Rockland Café was a clean and interesting restaurant that features delicious food served up by friendly people. It appeared to me that a lot of locals frequent the place, which makes it less touristy and more interesting than the other eateries in this locale. Oh, the fried clams and onion rings were clearly five star: light and delicious, worth the extra calories and fat that comes with this dish!
