Maple Hill Farm Bed And Breakfast Inn & Conference Center

A really special place, run by a couple of special guys (Scott and Vince). Lots of personal touches to add to your experience. Grab a hand-drawn map and hike on the power line cut to find trails leading to a nearby pond. Check out the windmill. Grab a snack in the kitchen. Enjoy the scrapbooks and library in the living room area. Smile to your companion when you see your names in so-nice script in a card on your room's door. Take a drive into the country, or take the short drive to downtown Hallowell, which has a surprisingly nice set of shops and restaurants. We had a great time at the Liberal Cup, but other places looked good, too... Come in the fall on an apple-picking and/or leaf-peeping weekend. It's close enough to the coast to bop over to Damariscotta or Wiscasset, too.
Our wedding party stayed at the Maple Hill Inn, because the bride was having her reception at their space. There were some good attributes and some bumps in the road, which I have explained. Service: Check-In was brief and we were shown to our room. There were several bugs circling the main lighting fixture (more on this later) but the room was spacious and comfortable. I would describe it as quaint and cozy. Property: Beautiful rural property, with llamas and turkeys nearby. Lots of parking, and easy to find. Amenities: In-room whirlpool and outside hot-tub. The outside hot-tub was well maintained and comfortably seated 6 adults. The sauna was very comfortable as well. The TV only broadcast local stations, no cable. In-room DVD player with DVDs free to borrow downstairs. Snug and cozy gas fireplace in our room as well. Problems: Ourselves and two other couples stayed in 3 ajoining rooms. We later learned that each room (and each couple) had a unique bug problem (ladybugs, grasshoppers and flies). When we were shown our room, the proprietor did not seem to notice the multiple flies and lady bugs circling the main lighting fixture inside the bedroom. That made me curious about the cleaning staff, but it had been a long day of and we decided to get some rest and hope that housekeeping would eliminate the bugs when they checked our room the next day. I do not believe that housekeeping attended to our rooms because at 2pm the next day, and after after eliminating 5 insects myself, I brought my concerns (very politely) to the attention of the proprietor. Hearing the bugs and swatting at them made it hard to enjoy our beautiful room. The owner said that he would fix the problem. Six hours later, when I dropped a few wedding related items in the room, the bugs were still circling our light. I understand that it was a busy day on the property, however, when I asked again about when the situation would be resolved, he responded rather shortly "at some time before midnight." To his credit, the bugs were removed from our room before 11:00pm, however I did not appreciate being made to feel like my concern was such an inconvenience. Also, the wedding reception ended at 10pm. Our wedding party had rented out the entire hotel, and there were no other guests in the inn. We asked if several members of the wedding party could stay and socialize in one of the hotel rooms after the reception ended, because the Inn was booked and they were staying at another hotel 15+ minutes away. The staff quickly told us that unregistered guests could not stay at the Inn after the reception, even if a registered guest invited them to visit their suite after the reception. When another member of the wedding party asked why, we were told that this was not in the contract and the tone from the proprietor was quickly becoming very negative. While I understand these concerns, most hotels and inns permit registered guests to bring unregistered guests into their rooms during their stay, so long as the unregistered guest does not stay overnight. Our group made it very clear that no one would be staying overnight, that we were basically going to talk, eat more wedding cake and socialize (not out-of-control partying by any means), but this was not permitted and explained in an impolite and kinda harsh tone. Price: we paid $371 (tax included) for a 2-night, Friday-Saturday stay. I travel very often for work and have never encountered a bug problem like this, and it was a real damper for enjoying this beautiful place.
Very nice place. Excellent value for the money. Friendly, relaxing atmosphere. Sauna, hot tub and a bar, plus a cook to order breakfast. We will be going back.

Re: A small restaurant with a large sign, outside of Augusta and next to one of our favorite cemeteries. We technically ate here twice on our trip, once on the way there, when we grabbed a couple of pastries and we ate dinner there on the way home. We bought a whoopie pie, a strawberry pastry, a rasberry pastry, one frank($1.75 or 3/$3.33), a chicken basket ($6) and a lobster roll basket($10). Outstanding: Everything they make there is amazing. Decadent, perfectly prepared and made quickly. The pastries were so light and fluffy you couldn't hope to eat them neatly and their unconventional lobster roll was a unique treat. Their prices are very reasonable. The Chicken strip dinner I got was $6. Unacceptable: The service, while efficient is pretty surly. The young girls that waited on us clearly preferred to be chatting with their co-workers. They weren't rude, just uninvolved and a bit annoyed with our indecisiveness. The dining room leaves a bit to be desired. Summary: Man, we love everything we've had here, and it's gonna be torture driving past the restaurant every day to and from work now that I know how good it is. Their chicken basket is especially impressive - hot and crispy with juicy chicken and a breading that lets the flavor of the meat shine through, coupled with fresh tasting crispy french fries. 5/5 Notes - Bolley's is pronounced Bowl-Eees. Just in case. And bring cash - no cards allowed
Cheap eats near the Capitol and Maine State Library. You'd think I'd go more often, but I don't.. There aren't many hot dog places that serve fresh cut, twice cooked fries with their dogs. Add the three hot dog special (with natural casing franks), all for under $10 and you have a winner. I like mine topped with fried onions and mustard. Crazy, but they even have desserts too, along with homemade donuts. On Water Street, headed back towards Hallowell (at town line)
It lives up to the hype. Just great dogs and quick service. Don't expect much from the venue as it hasn't changed much in the past 40 years but they do what they do best and that is making top notch hot dogs.

Great little oasis for a cask conditioned pint and pub fare. Live music occurs frequently in the bar area. I had a "paddle" sampler of beer and the pot roast. Great beer selections on the paddle a solid showing on the pot roast. I tried my sister's shepherds pie and will get that next time. Portions are very big, so watch the apps if you are going to order an entree. The pub has a handsome storefront on the main drag in Hallowell. The interior is classic New England pub- not too dark, not to bright with lots of wood and brick. It is a very relaxing place. I shall return!
great beer, nice place, great pub food. Go.
This is our go to place for well crafted micro brews. We love the Alewife and the Tented Kilt Scottish Ale. I recommend the clam appetizer, it's so soft and mouthwatering. We have had the fish platter which had home made French fries. There's nothing I don't like about this place. If you're looking to experience an old English style pub this is the place and the music just adds that special ambiance!

Lucky Garden in Hallowell, Maine has the best Sesame Chicken of any Chinese Restaurant I've ever been to. All of their food is good but the sesame chicken is to die for. We usually do takeout but if you want to dine in their buffet is excellent. It's not an overly massive selection so they seen to be able to keep everything hot and fresh most of the time. I love that when I'm waiting for a takeout order the owner always seats me at a table and gives me a cup of hot tea...VERY nice touch! The owner is always there at the front of the restaurant and he is very friendly and conversational.
Let me preface this by saying I hate buffets. After working in the food service industry and taking Serv Safe, you just kind of get grossed out by the idea of buffets. So I walked in, told my boyfriend in no uncertain terms that I was not getting buffet, and got a menu from the waitress. I watched over the top of the menu as the buffet was constantly replenished with hot, steaming food from the kitchen and dutifully attended to. The key to a good buffet is turnaround. When I can see that time and temperature control are actually being maintained, I will eat buffet. Seeing that there was no dinner menu and reasoning that any leftovers would sit in the car for an uncomfortable length of time (we were seeing a movie after) I decided that maybe the buffet wasn't a bad idea after all. I sampled most of the things on the buffet and they were good, solid dishes. The egg roll was lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on, but we left satisfied. A+ on the stickless chicken teriyaki though. Oh, and the interior, instead of being really tacky like a lot of Chinese restaurants are, is gorgeous with natural wooden beam ceilings and walls. Strings of lights make it seem like a celebration without being tacky. Overall, a lovely place.
There aren't to many Chinese places that stand out, but this place is great! The setting here is laid back and has a great view of the river. Food quality is top notch and plenty of cold beverage selections! Our waiter was really nice and did a great job taking care of us. Overall good food in a great setting. I will definitely be going back!

First time here with my relatives. Great bohemian atmosphere and mellow acoustic string music in the background, coupled with seafood specials make this place worth my return visit. The menu selection seem to be all American dishes with good influence on Italian and French. Good selection of savory dishes, meat and seafood. I would be happy with any of the entree dishes but opted for the special of the day - seafood medleys (lobster, muscles, sea scallops) herb Provençal The service is relaxed pace but attentive and creative at times. That makes it interesting to watch the wait staff and patrons interactions. I thought the parking was a little tricky on the street but there is a free big parking lot behind the building.
This place gets a ton of great press... maybe I ordered badly... maybe I was having an off day? I had a steak - over sauced, over cooked, under chosen. The wine selection was okay... The service was good. The space was pretty cramped and uncomfortable. Lot's of people still rave, so don't take my word alone.
This is just such a great meal...everything! We had fettuccine which was perfectly cooked and flavored and I had a Cajun burger that was also perfectly cooked! Great atmosphere....great food...homemade and specialty items that you can't find anywhere else. The dessert menu looked incredible too.

Amazingly delicious garlic chicken. Pot roast was to die for. Great atmosphere. Stellar service. Cannot say enough good things. Not the cheapest meal, though. Love love love this place.
The genuine waitstaff must have all had the night off on my recent Friday night trip to Joyce's. I had been dying to try this place for a while. It seemed so cute and cozy. And a warm summer Friday night with live music outside overlooking the river, what could be better?! We arrived and requested the deck. We were told a table would be ready in about 20 minutes. The waiter was friendly, but super frazzled. Rule number one, no matter how busy, never let the customers see you are so stressed. But we were fine to sit at the bar and have a beverage, I enjoy that. In the mood for a handcrafted cocktail, I looked over the martini list. I couldn't decide between two, so I asked the bartender which was better. His response? "I don't know, I don't do girly drinks" which would have made me laugh if he was at all joking. Trying to lighten the mood I jokingly quipped "Come on, real men drink girly drinks" and laughed, which only caused him to sigh loudly and walk away in a huff. Oops...I'm sorry, I thought customer service and playful banter with customers still existed. We were lead to a great table and we finished our drinks and were loving the live music. We sat and sat with empty glasses forever. Finally, after 30-40 minutes, I went inside and tracked down the man who had seated us. I told him nobody had been to our table yet, and he apologized. After about 10 more minutes, our waitress finally came. She apologized and took our order and brought more drinks. The food was forgettable, which was too bad because we were starving at that point. I'm never one to look for a handout, but having worked in the restaurant biz for over 20 years, at the very least I would have comped at least a drink after waiting for almost an hour without being greeted. I would go back to Joyces for a drink and live music, but that is it. And I would never again sit at that bartenders bar. Too bad, this place could be amazing.
Joyce's brings another unique dining perspective and experience to the eclectic downtown of Hallowell. Its unpretentious dining atmosphere and unbeatable patio makes for a relaxing evening for any local or passerby. The entrees are forgettable, but the crab dip full of flavor. And the wine list is copious, providing 30 wines by glass and 60 by bottle. So come to Joyce's to raise a glass or two while noshing on the apps and listening to live music, but opt for dinner elsewhere, especially if you're looking for excellent cuisine. I love you, Hallowell!

My partner and I stopped in between lunch and dinner (around 3:30ish) for something to eat. Having never been here before, and the cold, rainy weather making me want soup or chowder, we decided to come here. The space is nice, and the lounge/swing music playing was pleasant. We were the only customers. My partner ordered the seafood chowder and a crab salad club. I only ordered the seafood chowder, which was described as having "shrimp, scallops, fish, and crab." I got a heavily-sherried broth with flecks of crab and maybe one chunk of fish and one shrimp, and a whole lot of potatoes. I don't mind potatoes in my chowder, but I was expecting more seafood and less filler. Not a scallop to be seen. My partner didn't even get a little shrimp in his. His crab salad was tasty, but could have used a touch more seasoning. Overall, I probably won't come back here.
My husband and I decided to try, as we sat and waited for our waitress I read yelp reviews and was scared...glad we stayed food was great. I really like that they offer 1/2 orders as I'm not a big eater. The only bad thing about the night, our waitress left half way through our meal, otherwise good meal.
A neat restaurant, looks like it may have been an old bank or something. The place was empty when we went, but it was a Monday night. Waitress was very friendly and did a good job. I had the lobster roll, my son the fried seafood platter, and son-in-law the baked stuffed haddock. We all liked our meals. A little pricey, but it was fresh seafood. A good selection of local beers also.
