My husband and I had a wonderful experience here last Friday evening. We walked in and were greeted by lovely piano music...to find out it was Jim Ciampi, our wedding band, who we loved, and he plays there Wednesdays and Fridays. We sat at the bar and him and a vocalist played our wedding song. This was touching and such a warm welcome to this lovely establishment. We ordered a bottle of wine and the appetizer special - it was a eggplant roll. It was delicious, however we really did not need it after the amazing pesto bread they brought out. Salad was also included in our meal. The spacing between dishes was perfect to make more room for the main course! I had the Gorgonzola fettuccine with chicken and my husband had an all time favorite of his, veal Parmesan. Both were very large servings, and delicious. I am the type of person that really needs to be in the mood for italian, its just not my go to meal, but I would eat here weekly after our meal and the service. Such a great experience I look forward to our next visit!

My boyfriend and I jut had an absolutely wonderful first experience at Hug's last night! We went for Maine Restaurant Week, so we had a 3-course meal for $35 a head. The options on the menu all seemed delicious, and neither of us regretted anything we chose. We walked away *very* full and pleased with both food and service. I personally had the Havarti Fritter, the Chicken Parmesan, and the Chocolate Chip Canoli. My boyfriend had the Meatball, Chicken Limone, and Chocolate Chip Canoli (which he's just never had... weirdo). We started with the pesto bread and salad, which always comes with each meal. The pesto was wonderfully flavorful, but just a tad soggy for my tastes. The salad was also very fresh and wonderful, and adequately dressed. So far, so good! Then, we got our appetizers, and holy smokes! We shared bits and pieces of the entire meal, and I would have gotten anything on the menu it was all so good! The meatball had a very fresh flavor, and a delicate texture, which is a nice change from the more dense & heavy meatballs I'm used to having in restaurants. The fritter was also absolutely delicious... but I don't honestly think you can go wrong with a fried cheese. The main courses were also full of flavor, but my one recommendation would be to just lighten up on the red sauce for the chicken parmesan just a tad.... I felt as if my food was swimming around in sauce. The chicken limone also had a very flavorful, yet light sauce (it was quite lemony!). Definitely more appropriate for the size of the dish. And the canoli to finish everything off? Wowza! I loved it. I haven't had a canolo that I have legitimately enjoyed since I came home from a trip to Italy... so this was a pleasant surprise! Overall, I am SUPER impressed with Hug's. The dining room was super cozy and beautiful... the candles are actually real (which is a nice change), but I wish there were a few of those light-reducing shades (You know.. the kind you see on busses? Something along those lines, but nicer...), because I definitely got hit in the eyes with bright headlights a number of times during my meal. I will definitely be going again, and with a goal to try all sorts of new things. Good job, Hug's!

A misnomer! Just butter sauce & over cooked shrimp. The pasta was just right though. Waitress was unconcerned. Heard nothing back from the kitchen. Second time @ both Hugs locations. Dissatisfied each time, but encouraged me to make my own lasagna and my own shrimp scampi which both came out very good.

The only part of my meal worth a positive was that my Tanquaray Martini was properly shaken, chilled, and had 3 olives...from there, it was not even Italian chain level food. My girlfriends meatball appetizer used canned sauce which wasn't cooked off properly, leaving a sharp, semi-sour taste to the sauce. My antipasto was unimaginative...void of any charcutterie...and looked like a packaged Hanniford antipasto package laid out on a plate. My Amatricania pasta....which I have prepared several times, was not close to anything resembling it. It contained canned diced tomatoes, no sauce, no pancetta...it was not edible. We left both of our entrees uneaten....the bar waitress was very nice...and asked my input....and then comped the meal....so...a second star....for excellent resolve and service of the problem....I always give one mulligan....so I'll give it one more try.

We ate at Hugs last night. The hostess was very very nice and seated us away from the door to avoid the cold. Our server was also very nice. The food was okay, but not very generous portions, for the price. I had the chicken marsala which the sauce was too heavy on. When I asked the server to hold the pasta (that came with the meal), she asked if I would like broccoli instead. I was very pleased and told her yes. When the bill came, they had charged me and extra $2 for the side of broccoli! If you are going to offer something instead of something else, but there is an upcharge for it, that's fine, but tell me ahead of time, don't make me think it's an even substitution and then hit me with a fee at the end. We each had a dessert $7 each, a bit steep for the portion. The cheesecake was excellent the cannoli was okay and the lava cake, was not very good at all and tiny. All in all an ok meal, but I would not choose to go back.

We tried Hugs once again & were once again disappointed. Therefore this was our last visit to Hugs which we used to enjoy (see our initial review of Hugs). We still love the people at Hugs, but we must say farewell. My husband had the pasta amatraciana & found the canned diced or chopped tomatoes a nearly flavorless & quite dry sauce - not as it used to be. My veal francaise was OK but again not as it used to be. Even the salads were not as good. Something is amiss at Hugs. To use my husband's words, the chef is lazy & uninspired. Concerning the canned tomatoes, I too use canned tomatoes at home but not the canned diced or chopped tomatoes & I always add items to add flavor! We still love the excellent servers at Hugs & the drinks are fine, so it is with great sadness that we say goodbye.

My daughter and I sat at the bar for dinner. Very nice bartender! We both ordered wine and dinner. Not very crowded at first(6:30ish) bar began filling up around 7 with locals. Dinner comes with a chilled bowl of salad, family style. Plentiful and fresh, lettuce, peppers , red onions, tomatoes olives and croutons. The house dressing was excellent. I had the squash raviolis with a brown butter sauce. Sooooo Good! My daughter had the mushroom ravioli with red sauce with goat cheese. I'm definently going back!

Wonderful dinner, pleasant live music, but when our dessert arrived we were told we needed to leave within 10 minutes. Had we known there was a time limit, we would not have made a reservation. Just plain rude.

The Hugs in Falmouth has great food, but is not quite up to par for us regulars at its sister restaurant in Carrabassett valley. The pasta is good, as is the salad and pesto bread that comes with every meal. The atmosphere is decent, and the food is too expensive. We really only come back because of the good food and to support local business. If you do go, however, the pink Alfredo sauce is a favorite. The angel hair puttanesca is also another delicious meal. Hugs has great antipasto and other appetizers. Definitely recommend, but can't help comparing it to the hugs near sugarloaf, which very well may be the best Italian food ever.

Came here for dinner on Valentine's Day with my husband and our daughter. We decided to go out last minute, but were able to get in due to some last minute cancellations. All in all everything was pretty good- staff was really friendly. We didn't order appetizers as the meals come with salad and a delicious pesto bread. My husband had classic chicken parm and I went with spaghetti and meatballs, and my daughter just plain pasta with "pink" sauce which she loved. I had seen a review mentioning that the portions were a little small- that's crazy talk. I am a hungry pregnant woman and I barely made a dent! Everything was delicious and we would definitely go back again for a casual italian dinner.

I found our meal at Hugs to be very good, with a variety of traditional dishes offered with a unique twist. The wine selection was very good, and the service impeccable. For Gluten-Free meals, they suggest that you partially cook your rice or corn pasta, and they will finish it with their delicious sauces. We were too full to enjoy the list of delicious looking desserts. We'll certainly be going back for more!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
