I'm updating my review after having eaten at Los Tapatios for over three years. I still like it and it's better than any other Mexican restaurant in town. Granted, there's better Mexican food to be had in southern California, but it's pretty impressive for a city in the suburbs of Portland, Maine. There are lunch specials every day and I eat more lunches than dinners at the restaurant. sometimes I eat in, sometimes it's take out, but it's always good. I'd also had dinner many times at Los Tapatios and while the service can sometimes be a bit too laid back once most people have left, the food it always good. Yes, it's in the basement. No, it doesn't feel like a basement. It's a casual place that's sometimes a bit loud but the food has never let me down.

Solid, authentic Mexican cuisine this far north? It's possible! Los Tapatios serves up all the usual favorites (burritos, quesadillas, fajitas) and even some south-central specialties like chalupas. The staff are super courteous and accommodating, modifying dishes to fit your needs, and keep the place scrupulously clean. The portions are very generous, and the lunch specials are priced competitively. The decor is very cool, with window-shaped mirrors, plenty of light, and murals to help you forget you're in a basement. We will definitely be back!

Good solid Mexican food. Coming from NY and eating in Jackson Heights, Queens where Spanish is King it was a little difficult for me to order my food. The new waitress had no clue about Mexican food and I am not used to ordering Mexican food in English translating it all. It was easier to get up walk into the kitchen and tell the chef in Spanish what I wanted... the result.... my food came out perfect! :)

Stopped in for a weekend lunch. We were seated right away in a cozy dining area. Chips and salsa were great, with just enough spice. I ordered the Vegetarian D: a bean tostaguac, cheese enchilada, and rice. This is my go-to on Mexican menus, most places have this combo and it's my favorite. Los Tapatios has amazing rice and a generous full portion on the tostada. I'm pretty sure this is the top of my list for this meal. My only complaint was that the margarita was gross (and also $9!). Will skip that next time. The bar looks cozy for a happy hour too, but maybe just beer or tequila without the yuck sour mix. Otherwise everything was great, with friendly and quick service. I will be back next time I'm in town visiting my family.

Promptly greeted by Owner/True Homie, Gama, upon walking in, "Primo!!", he exclaimed. Although I am of no Hispanic decent, I've never felt closer to home at another joint. This establishment presents its patrons with A1 Hispanic hospitality, and outstanding authentic Hispanic cuisine. Try a margarita (or 4), and proceed to demolish the gratuity chips and salsa placed in front of you. But be wary.. Do not spoil your appetite, because this place presents quality entrees of epic proportions. Over the years I've been coming to Los Tapatios, and the staff is like family to me, or at least they treat me as such. Excellent service, excellent food, an absolute must try for anyone looking for an outstanding, authentic Hispanic meal of quality proportions. Si te gustan comidas deliciosas... !Necesitas ir a Los Tapatios!

Great food & a sensational waitperson named Heather. I had a special quesadilla like none other, great taste. My bride had a almost best ever simple taco salad. Placing shredded beef on the base ruins the bottom. If I had my way I'd deconstruct the dish w /ingredients served on the side to keep the base crispy. Keep in mind her end thought was a very good Taco Salad. Extensive menu with great variations to chose from. I would love it if you added beef tongue to the menu.

Great Mexican at reasonable prices. Definitely recommend the special guacamole -- only $8.95 for a big, fresh portion. I enjoyed the pork dinner and my husband the beef chimichangas. My son found the chicken in the fajitas too be dry, though. Good margaritas, fast and friendly service. Biggest complaint was lack of ac on a hot day.

Awesome food at a great price! The Service was excellent and food was really good. If you are on vacation and need a break from seafood or just want some really good Mexican, this is the place.

This place is good, real good. The fajitas and guac were bangin. The other mexican joint in town is garbage. I cant wait to eat here again.

Sometimes, you just wonder if it was bad luck, especially when you read such glowing reviews and hear such great things from those in the community. Maybe the bubonic plague swept through the kitchen and the unlucky dishwasher was the only survivor left to man the controls. Whatever happened, our experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Pun intended. I should first express that we got takeout. I am a believer that Mexican cuisine for takeout is a gamble. I have had good and so-so Mexican takeout at places I like very much. However, in this case the pure sloppiness cannot be ignored. My daughter's chicken tacos were flat out disgusting - sopping wet tortillas and a pile of ingredients twisted into an unrecognizable mess. My wife's fajitas, requested with extra cheese, came with none. Also, no tortillas provided. The fajitas themselves were bland. My dish - I forget what it was called, but it was basically seasoned steak and vegetables chopped up for rolling into tortillas - was edible, with a little too much chew to it. That's the best I can say. It could have been worse. The guacamole, despite looking like a college kid's late night rejection of a slice of pizza and a bottle of Midori, defied odds and actually tasted very good, and the chips that came with it were very tasty. That, combined with the fact that I am basing this on takeout, gives it Two Stars. Trust me when I say I'm being generous. Huge disappointment.

I wanted to like this place because I heard it was "authentic mexican". Turned out to be everything I hate about east coast mexican food: just large portions of decent food. You know the style you've seen before: big plates smothered in sauce and cheese and everything kind of just blends together and tastes the same. I think the food had potential to be good but there they were catering to the quantity over quality. The margaritas come in a glass that make them look huge but are just filled with a pre made mix- generic, not good, stomach ache material. I guess it's good for people that have never left Maine and had even good Americanized mexican good like those 2$ tacos. Overall: basic food that didn't feel much different then eating at a crappy chain Mex place by a mall. One pro: ask for the "family hot sauce" it must be the one be staff uses when they make their dishes, which thy should be serving us!! 2 Stars bc the good is edible and the spot is a pretty cool basement atmosphere.

This place is interesting because it has a basement setting to it. When you walk in, you're greeted by the server, then to your right is the bar, and the seating area is near the kitchen. I love watching how the cooks prepare food, it's cool :) I had the Colorado Chile with beef in this brown spicy sauce, yellow rice, and liquid beans. I enjoyed every bit of it, but took a doggy bag home because of how big the portions are. I'll definitely be back!

For a spoiled yuppie from DC, where there's some great Mexican, this place was great. Don't be put off by the basement - once in, it's charming. Amazing guacamole, good sangria and a strong menu. The kids menu was really generous and the service was lovely. A definite new fave for me and my jaded, Mexican-loving kids.

No tequila in the margaritas (which were overpriced). Mole looked like someone took a wet dump on a plate and microwaved it. Tacos were ok. No soap in the bathroom. Won't be back.

The food was delicious! You get a lot for the price. Big menu and everything sounded delicious. Will definitely be back!

If you're an astute connoisseur who's advanced palate only enjoys the finest dining don't go here. If you like eating huge servings of good Mexican food (not Taco Bell) then definitely go here.

I went here after hearing some really good reviews but the food was not good. The visit started off well, the staff was very friendly and the salsa and chips were good. After that it went down hill, the chicken was rubbery which made it seem like it was cheap and frozen. I could not eat it. The rest of the meals were just as bad. Most of the people in my party mentioned they have some stomach issues during the night. My recommendation if you end up here is to get the salsa and chips, have a beer and call it a day.

  • Meg R.

Grisly meat and meh flavors are on the menu here. The portions are huge, typical Americanized Mexican. The restaurant is in the basement, so the layout is awkward and the space feels dark. The kitchen is partially open to the dining area and it gets loud and good smells tend to migrate. I've only been here once and won't be going back. There are much better places for Mexican in Biddeford.

This is undoubtedly the best Mexican food in Maine. Recommended by a family member who lives in Biddeford and boy are we so glad she did! We will never go anywhere else for Mexican. Been searching for a place as authentic as this in Maine. The ONLY place better than this is JVs in San Diego . Seriously . Period. They have lunch specials Monday through to Sunday ( see photos) . We were in Sunday and combos #1 to 30 buy one get one half off. Where else would you get great Mexican meals for such a great price. Awesome food, great service! Support local Maine businesses. Food great as this who needs to go to Mexican chains like Chili's ( food just not good) or the popular Margaritas's ( food so -so) . Go to Los Tapatios, you will not regret it!

As a Mexican far from home, I enjoy this sole authentic establishment. If you're vegetarian you're going to have a rough time here because, well this cuisine has a tendency of using meat products in everything. Everything looks like home, the flavors are as close as one can get this far up north. Margaritas are good, servers are friendly.

Excellent service, tasty drinks, and great chips and salsa. Super affordable dishes and pretty consistently a tasty meal. I did have a rough shrimp fajita one visit, but expecting fresh shrimp at any restaurant for $10 is pushing it. Combos are filling and always leave room for leftovers. Happy to have a decent Mexican restaurant nearby!

Still loving this place. I've found a new favorite dish, their quesadillas are awesome. The tortilla is thicker and a little softer than what you'd usually find, but the steak is really well cooked and the little bit of tomato that gets roasted inside is a really nice touch. (I generally don't like cooked tomatoes). I have them leave out the peppers so I get really nice sweet soft onions with steak on a nice tortilla covered in their awesome queso. Today I used some of the salsa that I had from the complimentary nachos, and loved it. It's still a surprise to me how much I enjoy the salsa and the guacamole, because until recently I'd never enjoyed either of these two things anywhere. The servers have always been really nice and have started to recognize me. Even though today was supposed to be my return to the reopened Palace Diner, I have no problem with the fact that I ended up at Los Tapatios.

My first visit to restaurant. Decided to sit at the bar. A friend of mine and I were Welcomed by a friendly bartender name Gama. He asked us if we wanted any drinks and provided menus to order food. Menu has several choices and the prices are cheap compare to most of the Mexican restaurants. Absolutely loved the food and the portion was huge. We made a mistake ordering one plate but Gama replaced it with no problem what so ever. I would return when I visit the area and highly recommend others to visit.

Very courteous and prompt service. Excellent food that is very moderately priced. I had pork, which was very juicy and tender, in fiery tequila sauce - I could not get enough. My friends had garlic fish and chicken fajitas - everyone was satisfied. Margaritas did not disappoint either.

Love it! The Mexican rice and guacamole are so delicious. I always get the Yolanda's chicken enchiladas and am never disappointed. Biddeford is lucky to have this great mexican place. My boyfriend loves the special steak burrito. ..reminding him off a Mexican cheese steak.

BEST Mexican food we've had in the northeast! Take it from me, I'm Mexican and have lived in California my whole adult life: It's authentic and delicious!! The service is outstanding and they have my favorite beer on tap Dos Equis Amber. 10 stars!!!

  • Rich M.

By FAR one of the best places to eat in the area - would get 5 stars if it wasn't in a basement :-). The food is hot, fresh, and served as fast as humanly possible. Which means you order and then have your food in about 5 minutes. You could NOT ask for better waiters, too. The folks that run this place are great, and the staff really goes out of their way to accommodate large parties. Finally, the food is just plain phenomenal. Decent-sized portions abound, and they'll make anything you ask for. So if you don't see the combo you want, just ask for it. They'll hook you up.

We found a gem tonight at Los Tapatios in Biddeford. We were craving Mexican food and consulted Yelp. We found this wonderful restaurant and were very pleased! The location was great, the place was very nice inside the decor and staff was super. We began with margaritas, my husband had Mango and I had Pomegranate. They were delicious and large. They brought us complimentary chips and salsa that were freshly made. We ordered the best guacamole we have ever had. I had the chicken in a mole sauce OMG outstanding! My husband had a pork dish that was scrumptious. Our older son had the fajitas and our younger had a chicken dish that was smothered in a creamy cheese sauce. They cleared their plates. The service was wonderful, our waiter was very attentive and brought our meals out on one arm all lined up it was a amazing. We got our food hot, fresh and quickly. We were so full we declined dessert. The prices were very affordable. We decided that we would make Los Tapatios a must ever time we come to our home in Maine. Go to this gem you won't be sorry.

Yum! My husband and our 2 kids went for lunch. It's one the bottom floor but they put in clever windows with mirrors so you don't feel like your basement at all. The waiter was nice. The Sangria was unbelievable! My husband had a margarita and said it was good ......and it was big like to sangria. They have a kids menu and he kids meals were big. We would so go back.

New South Portland location. One of the worst meals we've had in a long time. Aesthetically it's an echo chamber. Food wise my daughters cheeseburger was as thin as shoe leather and as tasty. Our chile relleno was filled with cheese and ..mashed potatoes? Refried beans were tasteless soup. Margheritas was weak. Never doing that again..

A very disappointing meal at the South Portland location. Very excitedly we went to try the new Los Tapatios 2 that opened very recently. Having read quite a few reviews of the original restaurant in Biddeford, we were looking forward to our meal. Unfortunately it was truly one of the worst meals we have had. The food lacked taste of any kind - there was really nothing mexican about it. My husband ordered the pollo loco chicken and the meat was completely undercooked. We let the server know about it and all she did was to come at the end of the meal to pick up his half eaten plate. There was no apology of any sort, no recognition of a bad meal. My chicken fajita was quite bland too needing the hot sauce that our server brought out with our meal. The best part of the meal was my house margarita & that tasted like it came of a prepackaged bottle. We will certainly not be returning.

Good quality Mexican food at affordable prices. Portions are large and most dinners come with rice and beans, the complimentary chips and salsa were constantly refilled throughout the meal. Nice selection of Margaritas and they don't skimp on the alcohol. Staff is very friendly and make pu feel welcome. A good local choice for Mexican food, which is equal if not better then places you would find in Portland.

The best Mexican food in Maine! Ingredients are fresh, flavorful and authentic. The portions are huge and the chips and salsa stay replenished as long as you are there. Once you visit you will never go to another 'Mexican' in this area again.

Just went there for dinner for the first time, found it to be the best Mexican food in the area for sure. The place was clean, the service was prompt and the beer was nice and cold. Plus Barca was taking on Atletico Madrid, so there was plenty of entertainment. I orderd the Mole Poblano, seeing as how it was one of their signature dishes and you simply cannot pass up on Mole. You get a fair amount of food for your money: A large pounded chicken breast swiming in mole sauce, rice and refried beans; as well as some flour tortillas to mop up the leftovers. The chicken was a tad overcooked, but not terribly so. The rice was bland on it's own, but mixed with the mole sauce and refried beans it was quite tasty. As for the sauce itself, it had a nice bitter cocoa taste to it and wasn't over spicy; the heat just builds bit by bit as you eat it. All in all a good, but not perfect, meal at a fair price. Definitely a place I will come back to again.

Los Tapatios is what you would describe as hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It's in a basement. Yes, you would not get a corner table with a view here, but you will find great food with an incredible value. One of the best Mexican restaurant in Southern Maine, certainly the best in Biddeford. The service is friendly and the food is well seasoned (something that seems to be a challenge to several Mexican restaurants in Maine). Not too crazy about the beef. Ask your server to sub the meats for chicken.

I have been to this place many times since I've moved to Biddeford and each time is better then the last. This place has amazing food and delicious sangria. There is nothing on the menu that is not delicious. One of the only places in maine to get authentic Mexican food. Prices are great.

  • Ronda B.

Best Mexican I've had in New England. Great food, waitstaff is top notch - very friendly and prompt. Fantastic fajitas and mole. We go about once a week, and the food and service are always consistently excellent. The only downside is the decor. It has more of a cafeteria feel. Cheap, generic looking tables and chairs and hard commercial grade tile flooring. For this reason, the ambiance is not stellar and the only reason I would not give Los Tapatios 5 stars.

  • Rt S.

My wife and I ate here today and we're very pleased. The food was the best Mexican food we've found in Maine. The restaurant is quaint and on the style of the little Mexican restaurants in the western U.S.A. The margarita and Dos XX beer were very good and are huge. The owner and his family are from California and really know how to cook the old fashioned Mexican way. We would highly recommend Los Tapatios and will certainly return.

So I have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants and this is the only one that I wished served biscuits so I could clean up the plate. Salsa was great along with the meal and service.

A hole in the wall gem. Forget the one at Biddeford crossing. This restaurant is small and intimate, with great food! The service is great, they are accommodating to all modifications, and food comes out quickly and hot. I love their margaritas and fried chimichangas. Great place for family and friends to get together.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
