Yes. A solid always yes to Bagel Central. The bagels, the cream cheeses, the pastries, the sandwiches, the iced coffees... *sigh* always scrumptious and always worth the wait (generally pretty brief). Side note: I've eaten bagels in many parts of the country, including good 'ole NYC, and these stand up to the best of them.

Had lunch and breakfast here while. I siting the area. Great atmosphere and fantastic bagels and deserts. Fresh meats as well as vegetarian options.

Vegan Cream Cheese FTW. The vegan bagels are called "water bagels" they come in a few flavors but not Onion. Oh well. Still good! :)

What a joke!!! It's pretty obvious that no one that gave this place a positive review has eaten a real Bagel. Their so-called bagel is some of the worse dense bread I have ever tasted. I have honestly had better "Bagels" from the freezer section. BTW they all suck. Mainesucks.com

Great bagels! Even serve Vegan and Gluten Free (which they serve GF from Udi's). The nova lox everything bagel with dill cream cheese was fabulous and such a great price at under $6. They did not skimp on the cream cheese or the lox and lox was tasty. I splurged on a chocolate black and white cookie as well. When in Bangor it is a must stop spot for breakfast or lunch.

Really cute and fun place. I like that they have plant-based options.

As an out-of-towner, we wanted to hit local joints and let me tell ya, local is what you get here! WE loved it! As mentioned by other reviewers, this is not just a bagel place. The sandwiches, muffins and soups all looked amazing. Good thing that on a Sunday morning the line was about 20 deep which allowed ample time to view the display cases and menu board until it was our time to order. No disappointments found with the bagels, flavored cream cheese, sweet rolls or coffee. The decor... really cool exposed brick and large windows create a warm and friendly experience. The kind of experience that allows single people to grab a table and nurse a coffee for hours while utilizing the wifi and headphones... for example. :-)

When I think of an excellent bagel (and being from New York I should know), I think of chewy, airy, carbohydrate heaven. The bagels at Bagel Central are a yeasty-pizza dough concoction. This may be your thing, if you prefer a fluffy-soft bagel, but its really not traditional. Not to mention, the bagels that I brought home did not maintain their delicate texture next-day, and turned all dry and crumbly. We waited 15+ minutes for a simple bagel and cream cheese on a Sunday afternoon. I understand they are busy, but most bagel places will slap some cream cheese on a bagel and give it to you instead of pushing that order to the back of the line, behind breakfast and lunch sandwiches that will take much longer to prepare. Another thing that annoys me about bagel places is that they ALWAYS run out of everything bagels (and Bagel Central was no exception.) I mean, wouldn't you think someone would have figured out that this point to make some extra everything bagels? Maybe they need an economic lesson in supply and demand. I would give Bagel Central another shot for a sandwich maybe, but the bagels themselves really don't shine.

Bagel Central is a Bangor staple that needs to be supported. But don't just support it because it's local, support it because it's DELICIOUS! The name of the business was deceiving--I didn't immediately go there upon moving into town because I'm not big on bagels. But this was a disastrous mistake considering I was missing out on all their delicious sandwiches! If you are a carnivore, you must go with the Standpipe! Basically a reuben, but one of the best I've ever had. It comes with a side, and I like to go with fresh fruit. I love eating in at Bagel Central because it's community/cafeteria style. Lots of large tables that are great for groups. The windows let a lot of light in with their high ceilings and there is some beautiful local art that decorates the other brick walls. In the summer you can also enjoy outdoor seating. I love Bagel Central!

Fantastic food. All made from scratch without any preservatives. They have healthy buckwheat bread, whole wheat bagels to sugary sweet. Must go here

Deeeelicious gazpacho - try it if you like spicy! Many vegetarian & vegan options: Black bean salad, homemade hummus, tofu cream cheese, veggie lentil soup, vegan cheese cake. Plus several gluten-free bagels. Friendly staff, cool artsy-Mainer vibe, and they even have two honest-to-goodness phone booths, in case you need a quick superhero changing room.

Since childhood Bagel Central has been my favorite spot in Bangor to grab breakfast/lunch, so admittedly I'm reasonably biased in my rating. On the food: Consistent is preparing wholesome, tasty, simple meals that will leave most satisfied with quantity and quality. On the ambiance: depending on when you go, you'll either experience a bustling group of locals and a low din of activity, or during off peek hours a relaxed quieter setting perfectly suited for people watching out giant bay windows and playing on ones computer on free WiFi. (Either way you'll enjoy local art on exposed brick walls, and a warm staff always helpful in navigating their menu.) Great for family breakfast, business lunches, and a place to get work done. PS. TRY THE REUBEN! PPS. TRY THE POTATO SALAD!

A fine place for a casual breakfast. Serves a wide variety of options and has a large seating area. Not the best I've ever had but a great choice for the downtown Bangor area.

Really good food for the price. Their water processed bagels are excellent; their cream cheese is the most delicious; they make really good muffins; their pastrami sandwich with Russian dressing is out of this world, so long as the pastrami is fresh (make sure to ask). People who work there are all really nice. The pastries that are not made at the store, such as eclairs, etc., can sometimes be a little old. But ask and they tell you how fresh they are.

Very very good with many options for any diet/preference. Friendly staff who know your regular order only after a few times going there, and an awesome downtown atmosphere. Can't wait to see what the future holds for these guys!

I was just passing through and asked someone where I should go for breakfast before we hit the road. I was pleasantly surprised when we got here and it was a rather large store with family style eating area. The bagels are probably some of the best I had and coffee was definitely up to par! I would absolutely come back on my next trip. Keep up the great work bagel central!

Fantastic food! The set up is cafeteria style though, which I really don't like. The space could be amazing but the decorating and use of space is lacking. Food, is top notch.

What a great local coffee and bagel institution! While in Bangor, I would frequently visit this place to get my bagel fix, and I was always pleased with the service and quality of the food. The only bad thing is they're closed on Saturdays, but that's alright! The interior is also very fresh, like the food! I also like the paintings on the walls inside. They also give you a very generous portion of cream cheese with your bagel. Great place to warm up on a snowy day!

  • Merrit N.

Best bagels ever! Soft, with just the right crunch after toasting. (NO chewiness at all!) I love the everything bagel (esp with cream cheese and smoked salmon). They also have unbelievable cheese danishes (the apricot is my favorite), and great sandwiches for lunch. Reasonable prices! Con: Not open on Saturdays.

Great place for all ages. Come for coffee, breakfast, lunch, a snacks, or dessert. The Astoria is my favorite sandwich - high-quality turkey is piled high on your favorite bagel with home made cream cheese of your choice.

Quite simply the best bagels that I have ever eaten. Every time I am back home, I always try to make it a point to have at least one fresh Bagel Central bagel. My only complaint is that I wish I knew about BC when I still lived in Bangor!

Oh man. I had the BTLC on a plain bagel and it. Was. Delightful. I would absolutely recommend swinging by if you have the time. Oh, by the way: The half-moon cookies? Yes. Just ... yes.

I've been going to bagel central since it was "THE Bagel Shop" down around the corner from where it lives now. The good: The ONLY place to get fresh bagels in Bangor. Excellent Oatmeal with lots of fixins (cream, raisins, etc) Excellent muffins Lots of space ( the place can be packed and you can usually find a spot) Free WiFi from counter The Bad: The bagels are not like they were. Still the best in Bangor but not a Mr. Bagel/NYC level. The coffee is subpar at best Much of the food in the case to the left looks old and sketchy...stick with the bagels, scones or muffins.

As I have read the reviews of Bagel Central through Yelp! I see reference to the bagels here are good but not like NYC bagels and are crumbly and not as kosher as ones they have had before. We are not in NYC toto. If you are looking for a place where you can go where the Bagels taste fresh and have a quick cook time and service and has plenty of open room seating, then try out Bagel Central. I started going there each year whenever we would meet up as a team heading over to the Susan Komen race and then I was hooked. The only drawback is that I would come there for Bagels and pastries but the coffee is lack luster ... not a rich cup 'o joe to go with a tasty bagel and this would be the only reason that I did not give it 5 stars. Again, you want a good, fresh breakfast where you can connect to the Wi-Fi and fill your belly, then try out Bagel Central .. you wont be dissapointed.

I have been a bunch of times while on vacation in Maine. This place seems to capitalize on being the only bagel shoppe in town (or I haven't found another). Maybe there are different kinds of bagel styles in the world, but these bagels are not typically the ones I enjoy. These bagels are more like bread baked in the shape of a bagel, not chewy like traditional boiled bagels I'm used to. I would rate this place a 2 but... 1.The actual place is very nice. Great brick walls with art, wifi, friendly community members socializing. 2. Tofu cream cheese. 3. The avocado sandwich on rye bread is really f-ing good. I have a hard time not ordering one to go when I'm there for breakfast.

I've only ever had their blueberry bagel so I can't speak to anything else foodwise. It has the bagel shape but that's where the resemblance ends because the taste and texture is completely different from anything else I've ever had. Delicious and hands down my favorite bagel of all time.

    * Been here a half dozen times. * Food is okay: 6.8 out of 10. * Don't be in a hurry. * Asked for a hot chocolate and although they had some on hand they could make me, the girl at the counter was told by her supervisor they were no longer selling it for the season?

I LOVE these bagels. My friends and I used to pile in the car, go get a bag of bagels and then just eat them plain in the car on the way home. These aren't hard like Dunkin Donut bagels and ones you buy in the grocery store. They are soft and delicious and perfect. Tons of flavors and I have never had a bagel I didn't like there.

great location, great open space inside, free wifi with purchase, really mediocre food. everything i've gotten here that looked like it was going to be delicious was really mediocre, unimpressive, or just not fresh. i now only visit this establishment for their decent selection of bottled beverages, if i'm in the area when they happen to be open. i've also seen flies inside their display cases, which disgusts me.

I was having a get together on a Sunday morning, so I called Bagel Central (apparently they're the only bagel place that's not a chain in Bangor, but I'm relatively new here, so feel free to correct me) early to order a dozen or so mixed for pick up on Friday (they're closed on Saturdays). I have to say that I was very disappointed in the quality of the bagels. Frankly, they tasted like something I could get from a supermarket - like Thomas' or Pepperidge Farms or something. When toasted, they did not crisp up much and are too soft and, as someone else has already mentioned, almost bread-like. They seem to be very selective about what they put on their supposedly "everything" bagels have some weird herbs on them (thyme? oregano?) and tons of caraway seeds, which I don't like, but no salt, garlic, or onion that I *do*. I thought I had found a regional answer for my bagel fix in Bagel Central, but unfortunately, I will not be eating there again once this order is gone. Instead, when I go south to the Portland Area, I'll stock up on Mr. Bagel bagels, which are EXCELLENT, and bring them home to freeze.

Listen to Bernie R. I love potato pancakes, and was excited to order some. They were reheated, and awful. Tasted like leftovers that had been in my fridge for days, and microwaved, because it was. I had been there a few times, and my food was reheated on a styrofoam plate, and the grease/ cheese had melted the styrofoam. I am pretty sure this isn't very healthy.

I love the bagels here. A friend of mine brings the bagels back to Boston once in a while. The bagels are light and airy unlike any other bagels Ive ever had. They are fresh and full of blueberries! They also freeze well. :) Based on my limited experience of this business, Yay! I'm a fan. 4 stars.

Really good bagel and coffee, but not good enough to wait in line for 15 minutes then another 30 minutes for my food after ordering

Bagel central is a quick place to stop for breakfast, brunch or lunch or to grab a bagel on your way somewhere. Probably the best thing about the place is the fun ambiance: A large rambly room with extremely tall windows that stretch the height of the wall. The brick walls and high ceilings give the place a minimalist, airy feel, so even when the place is crowded, which it often is, you don't get any type of claustrophobic feeling. It's lovely to sit there on a Saturday morning, with a steaming cup of tea or coffee and a bagel and watch the snow flakes fall outside the large windows. Even on dreary days, the giant windows and airy feel of the place are cheerful. It is family friendly and even has an area with books for young children that are bagel or bread themed. The food is just fine: Nothing to write home about but will hit the spot. Please note that, during the lunch hour, Bagel Central often becomes extremely busy so if you go there between 11:30 and 12:30, plan to wait in line. Also, if you need fast service, make sure to ask for a bagel that isn't toasted: Your cashier will put the cream cheese right on the bagel for you and hand it to you. This will save you having to go to the other side of the restaurant and wait for up to 10 minutes to have the kitchen staff prepare your food for you.

It's ok. Nothing special and nothing like the bagels in NYC... As Leila C said, these bagels are a bit crumbly and more like sandwich bread. Most places if you get a flavored bagel they put the toppings on the inside as well as the outside. Not this place. Onion, Garlic, Everything, Herb, etc... all of them only have a topping and it is just a plain white bagel on the inside. : ( They do carry vegan and water bagels though so that is awesome! AND they have TOFU cream cheese!! woot woot. The price is ok... water bagel with tofu cream cheese is almost $3.00 The sandwiches and actual food is usually pretty good and fairly large portions as well. Very kid friendly, open loud spot with communial tables, wi-fi. Nice place to chill or grab brunch on a weekend.

Cons- bagel texture: bagels are a little crumbly, taste more like sandwhich bread almost. Pros- Oatmeal pancake. Was expecting a pancake with oats, but no...its actual oatmeal with raisins oats brown sugar and all, cooked on a pan and served with syrup. -Everything bagel (I think they add oregano, yum!) -Inexpensive (bagel w/cream cheese, 1 pancake, and 2 scrambled eggs: $5 -Good coffee -Large open space, lots of seating, wifi

Great breakfast place. I love their egg, bacon and cheese on a bagel sandwich. They are closed on saturdays but open the rest of the week. Great meet up place.

This review comes from someone who worked at Bagel Central for almost 3 years. Here are a few points to take with you. 1. The restaurant isn't kosher anymore. It was when I was working there, but recently this was changed. So if you are looking for that type of establishment you will probably have to look outside the state of Maine. 2. Never EVER EVER under ANY circumstances order the pizza pot pie. Often they make large quantities and then freeze them for a ridiculously long time. When I finished working there we were still serving pies made there over a year ago. Disgusting. 3. A lot of the food is prepared with microwaves. If you have any high notions that the kitchen is lovingly grilling your tuna melt, or cooking you pizz bagel, please try and forget them. The only things that are actually heated/cooked in ovens are the items that are then frozen. Everything is just reheated on styrofoam plates. 4. Water bagels are actually worse for you than the regular bagels. Just because they don't have eggs or oil does NOT make them a healthy choice. The absence of eggs or oil produces a denser bagel, which accounts for more carbs and higher calories. Granted, they are my favorites....but don't be disillusioned into thinking they are the better choice. 5. I really can't stress enough how everything is frozen and then reheated. 6. The pastries that are located next to the row of bagels are usually baked fresh daily, so you're safe with those. HOWEVER, the ones in the pastry case (next to all the cream cheese) can sit there for days and days. I've seen apple muffin linger for over a week. Just don't chance it. 7. They don't make their own cream cheese, they just mix in the flavors. The cream cheese is shipped in. I don't know how service is these days but I am fairly certain that its primarily staffed with high school aged kids. So, you take your chances. Bagel Central does have some amazing bagels and breads, and their danish's are awesome. However, don't be fooled into thinking that you're getting the freshest home made food....it's just not so.

Ok, searching for a nice coffe shop (as usual) in Bangor. Ok, went to 3 on one block nothing enticed me. So, I settled for Bagel Central. I can't eat bagels, but they had tea and coffee etc. WELL, the etc part was....APPLE MUFFINS. What is so great about that? WELL, let me say that the muffins are not like any other. They look like a sugar glazed pie full of almonds and apples inside..no, they do not look like a "muffin". They are so good, we each had one and then bought 3 more to go. Oh man, they are good. i disagree with one reviewer about these muffins. They tasted very fresh. Also, the ones we bought to take back to my mother in laws house we had in the fridge for about 2 more days. I heated mine in the microwave for 25 seconds and it was soooooooo good. Still, andI didn't get "ill". I took a chance. (and you are reading a review from a person who throws out tons of food cause I don't do left overs. Rarely. I throw out everything. So if I keep a muffin for 2 or 3 days in my fridge, then,it has gotta be good) It is a busy lunch stop and I am sure they have other goodies besides bagels and those awesome apple muffins. If I come to Bangor again, I would get those muffins. They are so filling and luscious. Not a bad stop. Bangor needs more quaint style coffee shops. They don't have much. But hey, I was only here 2 hours and it was snowing. Maybe next time I will look farther and harder. But I KNOW I will go to Bagel Central for the Apple Muffins!

I moved to Bangor from New York, and I thought the bagel withdrawal would kill me. It didn't, mostly because of this place. My Sunday ritual became walking to Bagel Central, picking up a copy of the Sunday New York Times, a bag of bagels, and a little container of cream cheese. The marble rye bagels are the best. It's a big, beautiful space too. If you've got nothing to do during the week, there aren't many better places to go to hang out.

I have visited Bagel Central several times and in general have been impressed by the quality of their servings in spite of the fact that they charge extra for minor things such as toasting the bagels. I must however, report that on a recent trip I ordered two bagels which were dried out and tasteless. It appeared to me that the bagels were either not fresh or had been previously frozen. i reported this to the staff but they totally ignored me. Hopefully this was just a "slip-up" on the part of staff. I believe that they should have at least responded to me. Behavior of this type exhibited by the staff will ultimately damage Central bagels' reputation and no doubt adversely affect their business.

  • Errol M.

The bagels might as well be some sort of biscuit-y bread. The coffee might as well be hot water. I believe there may yet be something worth purchasing at this establishment, so in the spirit of fair-play, I award two stars instead of one.
