A compliment: a very comfortable family run restaurant in the old school tradition. The reason to stop here on your way to Sugarloaf is the Lobster Stew. I have been enjoying it for over 30 years and it has never been anything less than the reference standard or Maine style Lobster Stew. Worthy of a stop every time we drive through on our way to wherever. You would never know they refurbished the interior after a fire six years - it is that old school. This is meant as nothing more than high praise.

The Village Inn is a landmark in Auburn, ME. My family has been going here off and on for years. Every time we have been, the seafood has been fresh and delicious.. my husband specifically requests to go here when we drive from NY to ME to visit family 3-4 times a year. I do not eat seafood but I like their chicken finger basket as the chicken does not appear to be made of premade frozen tenders. The servings are plentiful and the prices reasonable. This may seem small but I like that they have a large variety of sodas and drinks available, not just your standard four or five choices.

Great seafood. The lobster rolls are excellent and the clam chowder was great. It is a casual atmosphere with very friendly service. Great prices as well.

Food, drink, prices, service ok. French Fries, prepackaged.. should be hand cut. But.. the one overriding part of the experience, the thick layer of cooking grease coating every piece of furniture, the condiment bottles, menus, etc. Pervasive and overpowering. My suggestion, close down for a week and hire a good cleaning company to go top to bottom.

Sometimes I get a good meal and other times I'm amazed at the poor quality and service. I guess it depends who is cooking that day. I had the broccoli soup a while back and it literally looked like room temp thick tapioca pudding. It was obviously made days ago or left in a warming pot all day and all the moisture had evaporated. After asking to have it replaced it looked no different but was steaming and still could hold a spoon upright. Last night I brought my dad and stepmom for his birthday and had the Maine shrimp basket which was probably the most reasonably priced seafood item on the menu. $7.99 with potato and coleslaw. Three of us ordered mashed potatoes and they tasted old, lumpy and dry. When we mentioned it to the waitress she just said. "I don't cook the food" as if we should not complain to her because she doesn't prepare it. Seemed a bit odd to pretend you have no responsibility to relay info from the patron to the cooks. I asked about the price of 2 small lobsters and after asking someone else the waitress said $38.00 but it comes with 2 sides. Then she said "that's market price. I don't make the prices." Ive heard of overhead and profit but that's a little much considering that the previous week I had 2 lobsters down the road at Mac's Downeast seafood and paid $12 with butter and no sides. The atmosphere may not be as fancy as the Village Inn but the prices are extremely affordable. All in all I guess the Village Inn is too hit or miss for my taste so I'm gonna start going down the road for the better quality and value.

Not impressed at all...I ordered french onion soup as a Appetizer & my meal showed up first, so finally when my soup showed up my meal sat & got cold. For my main coarse i ordered the baked haddock au fromauge, it was all crackers & no cheese. My husband ordered the fried seafood platter & he loved it.

Haven't been there since they reopened, so that's why I only give 4 stars...they had the best fried seafood in l/a, arguably in Maine...prices are moderate to high for what you get... From what I hear, it's the same old Village Inn. Good Luck, don't let that fire atop you!!!

Excellent seafood. Seafood Chowder Cup ($8) full of seafood made with a stock (probably from shells) {scallops, shrimp, fish,) Anchor Scrod ($9) - delightful light butter crumb topping, excellent pickled beets Clam/scallop basket ($14) - crumb topping on clams - something new for me - excellent. Nice decor - excellent service Nicely recovered from the 2008 fire.

I visited this restaurant with a large group of people---and we had a joyful celebration with lobsters, clams, and amazing potatoes. Leaving I felt a little guilty because I realized we had a private room and everyone else had left for the night....but look forward to going back and doing the exact same thing again soon.

Visited this restaurant the other night, I am not from the town of Lewiston. The hotel staff directed us here when my friend asked about where to get a great lobster roll. We arrived late on a Sunday night so the place was kind of empty. The staff welcomed us right in and a nice waitress served us. My friend had the lobster roll with mayo, they do serve one without mayo. Hard to find a lobster roll without mayo. There was plenty of meat on that roll, no skimping, and my friend said it tasted pretty good. The portion size of everything on the plate was very generous. The price for the roll was decent, can't remember the exact figure. Nice beer, nice atmosphere(if a little empty of people). We stayed till closing time and never felt rushed to leave which sometimes happens. Nice folks, good food, local, not chain. Just a nice place to visit for two folks from out of town.

Back yesterday. Second visit. Stopped in on our way to the 'Loaf. Treated like family. Throwback. Chowder filled to brim with clams. This is Old School Downeast Chowdah. A. I know my NE Clam. Wife got lobster pie. She loved it. I finished with fried clam side. B+. We will be back.

Stopped in for lunch and ordered lobster rolls. Plenty of meat but was served on a hamburger bun. Was able to swap the fries (which looked frozen precut type) for a Caesar salad that unfortunately came with premade dressing. Service was nice and not rushed. Decor was acceptable and the place was clean.

I am offering this review, in hopes that it is taken as constructive. Staying in Lewiston and were thrilled to find a seafood restaurant open on a Sunday night. Greeted by our hostess and told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. Decided to sit in the bar in a booth. Party of about 10 in one room off bar, party of about 6 in another room off bar and maybe 5 tables in main part of restaurant. Our waitress was a bit curt, abrupt and seemed disinterested in answering our questions. Having waited tables I am aware of service. Benefit of the doubt, bad day before shift etc... however problems outside of work should be left at the door when we arrive at our shift. Ordered Village Inn Stuffed Mushroom Caps as main meal and my wife ordered Clearmeat Lobster Roll. Mushroom caps overcooked, very dry crab filling and mozzarella seemed to have been previously melted and then re-heated prior to presentation. Lobster roll was "ok" according to my wife. The food seemed to be presented as if no one cared about it. We are not 'food snobs' however living in and around Boston we've had the opportunity to enjoy very good food. Service was sketchy which was surprising for a slow night. When we left the two larger parties had departed and there were only three tables in the main dining room occupied, 5 patrons at the bar and it seemed there was plenty of staff. Still not seeing our waitress I had to get up and bring the bill to the cashier to settle up. Too bad... given the rich history of the place I hope the owners take note. (I also hope Gordon Ramsey does not get a hold of the place... or maybe he should.

Yuck. I ordered the shore dinner which consisted of a lobster roll, fish/clam chowder, fries, and coleslaw. The lobster roll was tiny, served on a hamburger roll, and has so much mayo in it that I couldn't taste the lobster meat. The fries were frozen crinkle cut fries and served without any salt on them at all. The coleslaw was overly mayoed just like the lobster roll. The fish chowder was delicious. I won't be back, but if you're eating here for some reason just get the chowder.

Homespun neighborhood restaurant features full compliment of menu and lounge services. I recommend ordering the specials of the day rather than to be tempted by the restaurant's diverse offerings on the brightly printed menu. A nice destination restaurant if you live in the Lewiston-Auburn communities or happen to find yourself touring this area of Maine. Booth service is cozy and offers dining privacy.

3 stars is being kind. We came up from the NJ shore for a short 1 night visit while staying at the Hilton. I asked the clerk at the Hotel about the place and she said it was very good. I called to make sure we could get a table and they said if we hurry we could get a booth. We showed up and 3-4 tables were filled. Hmm. The very nice waitress directed me to the fried seafood dinner which I ordered. Not very good. Mostly soggy fried clams. Mom ordered steak med well. Definitely overcooked. Kids shared the kiddie pizza. It was a half hot dog roll with tomato sauce and a slice of melted cheese. 76 bucks and major dissapointment. I really wanted to like it but I can't lie. I wish I didn't go.

I have been going to this place for years so this review is based on numerous visits including recent ones. This is a traditional old fashioned Maine seafood restaurant. This is the place to go for fried seafood, baked haddock in crumbs, fish/seafood chowder or Lobster stew. If you are not into seafood, they have a decent prime rib or steak. If you are looking for an upscale nouvelle cuisine seafood kind of place- then Fishbones across the river may be more your cup of tea. Decor is that nautical theme kitsch typical of places like this. Somehow - even though it was rebuilt a couple of years ago after a fire - it looks just as dated as before - and frankly, that is part of the charm. Service has always been friendly and proficient. Mixed drinks are old school like you would find at a Legion hall or a VFW- they pack a wallop - so keep that in mind if you are driving. If you want huge portions and can't decide - go with a captain's seafood platter. It is a matter of taste, but I always go with breaded (also known as crumb) as opposed to battered. The mark of a good old fashioned seafood place is the onion rings - these are actual fresh rings of an onion that is dredged in the crumbs with the seafood and fried along with it. It is totally different from ordinary fast food onion rings and a whole lot better - kind of reminds you of the french onions you top a green bean casserole with. If you order the seafood platter - plan on taking some home with you no matter how big an eater you are. 50 years ago - all seafood restaurants in Maine were like this. Old school Mainers would not recognize the pretentious foo-foo places like you find these days the Old Port or Kennebunk. This place is a classic. Dated? Hell yea!

4.5 stars. The Village Inn has been a part of the Saco/Auburn Maine restaurant scene since the 1970s (before then the restaurant was a drive-in movie theater, if memory serves me right), and for good reason: they serve delicious, fresh seafood at competitive prices. They make a seafood chowder that is amazing, but then again, all of their soups are. The lobster stew, clam chowder, and french onion soup are the standouts. The restaurant is also known for it's giant fried seafood platters, the best of these being the captains seafood platter. With everything being fried, you'd think that these dishes would be far too heavy, but they aren't- somehow the combination of fresher-than-fresh seafood and the light batter makes for a much more manageable meal. Of course, you can also order these dishes baked if you'd prefer. I've had the prime rib before as well, and while it was still very tasty and tender, I wouldn't choose it over the amazing seafood again. It's less an indictment of the meat and more an overwhelming recommendation of the fish. The Village Inn is an amazing, affordable, can't-miss central Maine institution. Try it for yourself whenever possible.

When we sat down, we kind of felt like we were in an episode of Restaurant Impossible. It was early on a weeknight, we were alone, and you could hear lots of noise from the kitchen. Our server was new and we had to help her understand the menu, but she was very nice! Once the food came it was clear that the 'roided up brit need not come here! They have smaller portions which was much appreciated. My lasagna was still about a 4" square. My wife had fabulous baked scallops that had not bread crumbs..but more of a bread crumble. The butter and garlic was just amazing! Verdict: You must try this place. They had lots of fried seafood, which we don't care for, but I am confident that they do lots of things very well!

Over the years this place has been known for their seafood entrees and very tasty dishes. From what I have been told 90% of their dishes are made fresh to order and they purchase fresh seafood daily. Their lasagna is very good and if you order the fried clams be prepared to have an appetite because they give you a heaping plate full of them. The establishment is family owned and operated and very pleasant to speak with. The place nearly burned down a few years back but they rebuilt what was damaged and they still remind one of the top 10 grossing restaurants in the entire state of Maine.

Excellent service and tasty food. Clean restrooms and fair prices. Only issue was when I asked waitress for recommendation on veggies (as meals come with two) and got the hated "it depends on what you like." Somehow I ended up with beets that must have come out of a can. If I ever go back to Auburn, would definitely eat there again, and just not order the beets.
