My mom loved the place. She had a spicy chirashi which she highly recommends. Fish variety is very wide and the fish is very fresh. Service is wonderful. Price is on the higher side, but it's going into quality!

First time back under new management. Their food quality is pretty good. I enjoyed the toro ($7.95 each). It was melt in your mouth goodness. I wasn't expecting much from their miso ramen, but I was happy with it especially at just $10. They give you an egg, bamboo shoots, fish cakes, pork and mushrooms. They only had one waitress for the entire restaurant at dinner service so don't expect the service to be fast but be patient and enjoy the food.

Um the worst place ever. Came in for lunch and the server forgot to put in our appetizers. When we asked she said it was coming. Then our Ramen came out but our sushi didn't because she didn't put it in. Sushi came out but no dumplings. When I asked about the dumplings, the server said its still coming but we were almost done and disappointed that we wanted to cancel it. I asked her why did the dumplings take so long and she she replied it was OK. But it wasn't because it was for my nephew and she didn't apologize. Don't go here. It sucks.

Good for a sushi fix at lunch. Good value. Sushi not as flavorful as I would have hoped

Went for dinner with a friend. Food was good enough. The chicken appetizer was excellent. The sweet potato rolls were ok. Had a fishy taste. I had one of the avocado/cucumber rolls and that was good. My issue was more with the service. The waiter was new. My friend ask for avocado/cucumber roll he wasn't sure if they had it or not, said he was new but said - we can make you whatever you want. Then I ask for the sweet potato roll which I saw on an online menu I found of theirs but didn't see it there on the menu - I was told at first - I am not sure we have that - then said No... we don't have that - you cannot get that. Ok... what happened to we can make whatever you want. Then my friend said to the waiter - can you ask? He came back and said they could do sweet potato rolls. Hmmmm... tells one customer at the table - we can make whatever you want, then tells the other customer - no we don't have that - w/o even offering to check. Then the waiter never followed up with us at all. Ask if we wanted anything further. Was very quick to come get our empty or almost empty plates ... then nothing. We weren't in a hurry to leave so that wasn't a problem but generally someone will ask if you want something else or if everything is ok - he did not - just left us alone. That part -I'd say is somewhat understandable - he is new it wasn't that busy but if you are learning may be more of a challenge as a few tables around started to fill up - we were pretty much the only ones when we were originally seated - but the inconsistency of the order, I felt was not good. Don't think I'd go back. The people at the door where very friendly, however. As I recall the lady at the door actually got took care of bringing our checks - not the waiter.

Today (June 9) was my first time at this restaurant. My family came here for dinner and I will be returning for sure! We're huge sushi lovers and every time we go out as a family we always get sushi. It's hard to find good sushi in Montgomery County since all the good (and expensive) sushi restaurants are in D.C.. I have to say this is THE best sushi restaurant in Montgomery County. We frequent Niwano Hana, Yuraku, etc. but this place beats them all. From what I understand, this place is busy during lunch but is quiet during dinner as its in a industrial office building area. They just opened up again with awesome new management. This place isn't in the busiest area but if people knew the restaurant existed they would never go to another sushi restaurant again. We ordered a sushi deluxe (nigiri and sashimi) and the fish was extremely fresh. Huge pieces of fish and rice kept at a minimum. We also ordered 8 different kinds of specialty rolls and they were truly the highlights. If you want special rolls, come here. I always thought Niwano Hana's rolls were the best but Bluefin's rolls are better. They use much more fish (whereas other restaurants just use minimal slices/chunks of fish in their rolls) and keep rice at a minimum. Other restaurants make the rolls look big through making them with alot of rice as a filler but Bluefin's rolls are *bigger* even with less rice because they stuff the rolls with so much fish/other ingredients. All the rolls are varied and we were impressed by all eight of them. For example one of the rolls that included shrimp tempura as an ingredient included 2 shrimps in each piece, whereas most places would only use one. This place just recently opened up so most people aren't aware of it's opening and it may be slow when you go but the service and food here is top notch. The waitress and the couple operating the restaurant are extremely friendly and do their best to create a warm welcoming environment and delicately prepare the sushi. They even gave us complementary toro sushi, tempura platter, sashimi salad, and mochi ice cream at the end because we have been repeat customers. You HAVE to try this place. Don't let the lack of reviews let you down, Bluefin is an incredible addition to Montgomery County's lack of quality sushi.

My wife and I love this restaurant. The salmon and yellow tail love dishes are fantastic. Very friendly staff.

Just had one of the bento lunch specials here and wish I could say I was 100% satisfied, but sadly no. The good: you do get a lot of food for your $$. Soup, salad, California rolls, shrimp tempura rice and your entree. Just don't get the salmon. (That is the bad). It was the fattiest mushiest piece of fish that I've ever had marinated with onions and peppers and teriyaki sauce. Just gross. When I told the waitress, she just told me next time to make sure I ask for it well done and still made me pay the full amount even though I hardly touched my gross fish and am still a little hungry. After adding a drink, tax and tip it came up to over $20. Not something I want to spend for lunch very often. So, thanks Blue fin, but no thanks. I won't be dining with you again.

nice place and friendly atmosphere. Some of the best sushi in the area. I had one of the lunch specials and was pleased with how quickly the food arrived, the excellent service and the quality of the food. I hope to come back soon!

Very expensive but very high quality. Probably the best fresh tuna I've tasted. We ordered the 15 piece sashimi (see photo). It definitely did not look like it was 15 but it was so fresh that we couldn't really complain. We also got the crazy roll which was so good! Loved it! Filled with fresh fish and a slightly spicy sauce that added to the flavor. Our toddler got the chicken teriyaki and she gobbled it up! Grant it, she's not a picky eater but still. I tried it and it was pretty good but a little on the dry side. Still tasty though! The waitress was so nice and sweet. We definitely will come again to try their other assortments! Great for date night but probably not for family night because if you're going to pay that much for great sushi, you want to enjoy it and not inhale it! :)

The ramen noodles and tempura udon were good. The sushi lunch was NOT worth the money compared to other restaurants. If you like ramen and udon, this place is ok! This appears to be a Korean owned Japanese restaurant. Convenient location next to the Natl Institute for Cancer and the JHU Research center.

I've revisited this place twice with my boyfriend. It's a little gem hidden...wish more people would know about this place. It definitely deserve a larger crowd. The staff was very welcoming and attentive. They check up on us regularly to make sure if we were satisfied. The atmosphere was quaint. I loved the umbrellas hanging at the ceiling, it provided a pretty cool textural pattern. Aside from the great service, the food was delicious. We tend to order nigiri as part of our meal. I loved their fatty salmon and toro. Very succulent, and it tasted fresh! As part of the toro nigiri, they added fresh wasabi which has a very strong flavor to it. I was so use to eating wasabi out of those tubes that this was a refreshing taste when I tried it. Their Blue Ocean Roll was amazing. The shrimp and crab surprisingly complimented each other very well. This was my order the second time I came. I'd order this again (but I want to try other new items on their menu as well). If only I can stuff myself silly. What a dilemma. Overall, I'd come back time and time again..whenever I'm craving sushi at a close distance. Keep up the good work!

I dined with 3 other friends here for dinner one night and this restaurant is definitely a gem. Although I knew beforehand it was Korean owed, the authenticity of the sushi was spot on. I guess this restaurant mostly depends on lunchtime due to its location because there very little people there. I started off wanting to order Ramen but they didn't have any Ramen. I was not happy. I ordered a yakisoba and sushi instead. The yakisoba was decent but this restaurant knew how to make sushi. They had high end sushi that you normally don't see elsewhere and it was exquisite. The service was very friendly even when I initially expressed my displeasure. Some of the best service you can get around here. The ambiance was also very pleasing to the eye as it was designed very well with just the right amount of brightness and the decoration was sleek yet had a traditional feel. It is definitely a very comfortable place to chill and relax.

I think I found my new sushi restaurant! I've been here twice for lunch and both times the service was extremely attentive and the experience was top notch. I'm a sashimi fan, and the fish is very pleasant tasting (though I can't claim it lives up to West Coast freshness). Definitely the best I've tried in Rockville. I was surprised at first that my tea was served in a coffee mug with a tea bag, but all doubt was replaced with confidence after my first sip. The green tea had a toasty aroma from what I think is toasted rice flavoring. Whatever brand they're using extremely tasty. I'm planning to come back at some point to try the ramen.

Went in a Tuesday night for dinner- very quiet and almost no one there. Obviously lunch is their big push. Service was excellent, food was very good. The rolls are a little to the pricey side for the special plates, but not terrible. Normal roll prices are about the average. Great place for a quiet dinner or date and free parking is very easy right next door. I'll go back

Just ate here for dinner with the family. Beautiful place in a great location by the hospital. Food was good but very small portions and expensive. Would be good for to take a date, but not family dinner.

I had a pretty pleasant first experience. The place was really dead on a Saturday evening, not too sure why as the sushi is better than average for the area. Food: 3.5/5 I'm a pretty harsh sushi rater so 3.5 isn't that bad in this area. You can tell with how the sushi is made that there is real passion in what is being created, I appreciate that. I also appreciated the real wasabi with my toro. My only real complaint with the sushi was the rice being too cold. I really can't express how important it is that the rice be served warm to contrast the coolness of the fish. Other than that, it tasted really fresh and yummy. The fatty salmon was a bit bland but that might be because of the rice--I'm not too sure. Service: 5/5 Very, very friendly and attentive. It could be because there was only one other table but nonetheless, the waitress was very nice and quick. Good service can go a long way. Atmosphere: 5/5 The decor was very pleasant and thorough! Definitely a nice place to be. Parking: 5/5 Free parking garage to the left of the little strip. Not the largest but it was very empty. I'm a paranoid parker so I love finding a spot with emptiness around me. Nothing is more upsetting than walking back to your car and seeing a door ding or worse :( Music: 1/5... They were playing gangster rap while I was eating my sushi (at least it was really quiet)... Can't say it fit the atmosphere or their targeted demographic... Although I have a pretty diverse taste in music, they probably should have gone with something a little more acceptable for their audience. I did appreciate Wiz Khalifa "See You Again" though... But the other songs were pretty mindless modern day gangster rap with the typical repetitive lyrics talking about drugs and sex. Very peculiar indeed...

I used to come here once a month. Then they have closed for awhile. Today I went by here and found that they are open again, so I came in for lunch with my husband. After that, I found that the business owner has changed and the menu has changed. The price of a lunch box has increased, but the problem is the taste turns to okay level only. It's not as tasty as before. I am disappointed. We have ordered a beef teriyaki lunch box, a shoyu ramen and a unaju. In the beef teriyaki lunch box, the tempura taste fresh and great. But the beef and roll is just okay, the beef is not hot. It's cold, the beef should be precook for a long time. Shoyu ramen tastes okay. Unaju same thing, tastes okay but the price of it is too expensive for a potion like that. It's in a small bowl. I think they could improve much more in food. I hope they can have something great, just like what I ate before the owner has changed.

I ordered sushi deluxe. The fish was fresh and the quality was good. My daughter liked their vegi yaki soba. My wife liked their katsudon.

My wife and I haven't had sushi for some time, and we just wanted to get a quick bite before going shopping. We have been here before, but this was our first time under new management. The best part was the variety on the menu. We got ramen, shrimp tempura, tuna tar tar, and a Yammi Yammi roll. Everything was great and the portions were very generous. The inside is very clean and modern. I enjoyed my dinner, mostly because the staff is extremely attentive and nice. They even game over and talked to us and our baby a bit.

Best sushi in Montgomery County, MD. I came on a Sunday afternoon so it was mostly empty but I have also come at lunch when more crowded. Food 5/5 (best sushi in MoCo): Reminded me of the care and tastes found in California Atmosphere 3.5/5: Nothing wrong with the atmosphere but if there was outdoor seating and decor this might be my favorite place! Service 5/5: Again, I came on a Sunday so there were only 2 tables being served but service was excellent, friendly, and attentive. Would definitely recommend this place to someone in need of good sushi.

The Summary: A Korean-run Japanese restaurant under new management. Good price for fresh sashimi. Friendly staff, fast and attentive service. Clean and modern space with a variety of Japanese beer/liquors. Give Blue Fin a try! Will go again. The Location: Right next to a parking garage on Medical Center Drive (near Shady Grove Adventist Hospital). Flanked by Subway and a Natural Market. The Experience: Stopped by around 7:30PM on a Sunday night for a light dinner. My father and I were the only customers and were seated quickly at the bar. The sushi chef greeted us, and my father and I pored over the menu for...too long. My father is typically a cheap skate when it comes to eating out, so I had to convince him to share the Sashimi Deluxe with me (21 pieces, $30). The sushi chef was kind and let us take our time ordering. As soon as we ordered, he gave us two small plates. "Tuna with soy sauce and wasabi on Japanese Yam," he said. The plate had a trio of 2cm tuna pieces atop a white mashed substance. The Japanese yam was slightly sweet and a bit slimy in texture, but cool and delightful. The tuna was fresh and slightly salty from the soy sauce. Our miso soup and salad came next (included in the Sashimi Deluxe). Just the standard. The sushi chef was preparing our dish. Since I've been studying sushi etiquette, I knew that you should strike up conversation with the sushi chef when sitting at the bar. Me: Is this a new restaurant? Chef: Yes, we are now under new management about 3 weeks ago. Me: The restaurant is very nice! How long have you been a sushi chef? Chef: Not a very long time. Only 20 years. Me: 20 years! Chef: Not a long time compared to my master. He makes sushi for 55 years! (Here he mimes his back being bent) Me: Where did you learn sushi? Chef: I study in Japan and Korea, under two different masters. So there you have it. A friendly and conversational shokunin. Next, the sashimi came out with three pieces of the following: salmon, tuna, white tuna, mackerel, snapper, yellowtail, 2 squid and 2 more sashimi that I forgot. These were artfully arranged atop a bed of white radish, several pieces of cucumber and two slices of lemon. The sushi chef handed us a small bowl and said, "Fresh wasabi. Stronger but taste better than other wasabi." The bowl also contained some seaweed salad and sprouts. "Eat tuna with the sprout. They taste good together!" Now, I recently learned that the wasabi we have in the U.S. is fake; in fact, the wasabi is actually horseradish. I was determined to find out the truth. Me: What is the difference between fresh wasabi and the other wasabi? Dad: One is fresh and the other isn't! Me: -_- Chef: The fresh wasabi is made from the wasabi root. It is very expensive, about $40 per root, and we buy from Japan. But it is my better than the other one, which is powder mixed with water, so I grate and keep some. And the difference was noticeable. The fresh wasabi was actually a bit stronger and less uniform in appearance. It was also a lighter shade of green. I will not go into every piece of fish, but I particularly enjoyed the squid and the snapper. The lemon happened to touch my yellowtail and the slight acidity tasted phenomenal as well. Unfortunately my dad took most of the fresh wasabi but what I had of it was great as well. We finished off our meal with a generous scoop of red "been" ice cream (menu typos are so silly). I think my father particularly enjoyed it, as I felt pressured to race him and eat it so I could attempt to get a third of the scoop. It was a good end to a great meal. The Service: The waitress, manager, and sushi chef took care to check on us often. Although we were the only customers, they were particularly attentive, and the manager even asked us where we lived and thanked us for coming out. I hope this will be true again when I go next time. The Verdict: I really love this restaurant and am posting this review so that others will hear word about it. It's great for the Gaithersburg area to have a go to sushi restaurant of quality. Take a friend and experience it for yourself! Oh, and sit at the sushi bar if you can :)

Last night was the second time I had sushi from here. The first time was lunch, I thought it was some of the best sushi that I've had in the area and decided to go back for dinner last night. I had got my order to go and decided to have something to drink as I waited. I sat inside and the sever brought me over several different appetizers that were on the house. The service was great and they are very friendly. Just be sure to check your order before you leave! When I returned home and opened the bag of the sushi I order, only half of my order was correct. I will be honest, it was still good and I ate it.

Agree that 4 stars is just about right. Good sushi and prices are not bad. Not a lot of activity as it was a slow Saturday night. Overall a very good experience.

  • C R.

My fiance and I had a great time at this restaurant the other week! It really does not get the Saturday night frequency it deserves, but I suppose that is more due to location than anything else. It's right near JHU and NCI, so lunches are quite busy we heard from the staff. The sushi was fabulous. Our table had a great vantage point to watch the chefs craft our sushi. it was funny because the chefs didn't want to put our plate out until the rolls were perfect. The chef waited for one piece of garnish before he would allow it to be served. When we ate it, each piece was perfect and flavorful. I'll definitely be back for more and tell my coworkers about this gem!
