High Blood Pressure at Applebee's

Most of the foods served at Applebee's restaurants are high in sodium. Unless you are visiting the restaurant or dining here in the group, there are hardly any options from the main meals if you wish to keep your blood pressure in check. You can rely on a few salad options though. If lucky, you may find low-sodium ribs as well at the restaurant.

Foods to Avoid at Applebee's for High Blood Pressure

Avoid Green Goddess Wedge at Applebee's. Broccoli Cheese Soup and French Onion Soup contain over 1000mg sodium and hence must be skipped as well. Skip all the chicken dishes and seafood at Applebee's except Grilled Chicken Breast and Baked Haddock without sides respectively. You must also skip Brunch Burger, Quesadilla Burger, Triple Bacon Burger, and Whiskey Bacon Burger at Applebee's. High sodium intake can be lethal for a high blood pressure candidate. Avoid ordering foods that contain over 1000mg sodium at Applebee's, especially if you're dining alone.

High Cholesterol at Applebee's

Well, steaks and ribs go hand in hand with cholesterol. Being their signature dish, it will be a challenge to find low-calorie, healthy food for those concerned with their cholesterol levels. However, you can always opt for their salads and other light foods to keep the cholesterol in check.

Foods to Avoid at Applebee's for High Cholesterol

If you have high cholesterol, then you must avoid eating sandwiches, wraps, and tacos at Applebee's. While the salads and soups sound healthy, you must skip the Fiesta Chopped Salad and Loaded Potato Soup at Applebee's. It is also advised to dodge the Three Cheese Chicken Penne and Chicken Fajita Rollup. Any main meal with over 100mg cholesterol is not idle for someone with high cholesterol. So, skip those items at Applebee's.

The lebanese taverna name dragged me into this place one of those evenings when I was in the Rockville area. Went with a colleague of mine - who had a tough time getting the correct order in. Anyways, for vegetarians still a great place to be. Lot of good choices - including veggie platter, falafel etc. Food was quick, warm and good. Definitely not a romantic place to go eat for sure.

Crappy tasteless food and bread tasted like it was 2 days old.

For the inexperienced Lebanese diner, this is a wonderful middle Eastern indoctrination to such tastes as baba ganoush or falafel. It is simply decorated and service is inconsistent. Food is nourishing and fair priced.

  • John W.

Middle Eastern Cuisine. I don't think place is all too special, or maybe I haven't ordered anything here yet to really make me say wow. Or maybe just the fact that I'm from NYC and I'm just a food snob when it comes to certain types of food that isn't really cooked to my tastes??? I ordered the chicken swarma with potatoes. It was ok, not really the best tasting. I thought the chicken was a little overcooked and a bit dry, even though there was some flavor to it. However, I did like the potatoes though, so it did save my food. It's worth the try to come here again to have the food here. My first experience was not that great, but there are other menu items that I could try next time. For now, only 3 stars as it wasn't anything outstanding to me for a lunch/food spot.

I didn't even know there was a Lebanese Taverna in Rockville, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it. My friend had Olivia's Platter which was chicken shawarma with rice and Lebanese salad. He liked it, but wasn't blown away. I ordered three mezze: falafel, fattoush, and hommos. The falafel was by far the worst I've ever eaten, and if it hadn't been for the triathlon I just did, I wouldn't have finished it....but I was soooooo hungry. Fattoush was good, but weak....I think Silver Spring's Lebanese Taverna has the best fattoush...maybe it's just me. The pitas were good, as usual at Lebanese Taverna, but nothing to write home about. I got a kick out of this lady sitting next to us who was raving about the falafel, saying to her husband, "Oh my gosh! You have NO IDEA how good that is!" I guess taste is in the mouth of the beholder.

What is this, no one has reviewed our local jewel! Lebanese Taverna is the sister restaurant of the more formal Lebanese Taverna in Woodley Park. My advice, go with the Traditional Mezza. It's a great introductory dish to those who have never sampled Lebanese cuisine, and a great staple for those who love it. The lamb kabob is something not to pass up. Highs: Kibbeh Hommos Kafta Baklava (Oh lordy is this good)

This location during the dinner hour has questionable customer service at best. Food is great. Service brings it down 2 notches. Otherwise a 5.

The bread, the appetizers were fine, but the sea bass -- one of the featured dishes -- seemed to be overcooked.

After the usual food at a 3-day training course, my classmates and I were looking for something different. In the distance we spotted Lebanese Taverna. Happy joy! Lovely fresh creamy hummus with a fabulous fresh pita to break off and dip through. Then, the chicken garlic schwarma sandwich. moist, chunks of chicken. enough garlic for flavor but not so much that it stays with you the rest of the day (at least my classmates didn't complain). Would totally come back if/when I'm in the area.

warm, soft pita. delicious, HOT, mushy falafel - just the way i like it. and that red hot sauce - spicy & delicious. salad was pretty decent for a "fast food" side dish and the fries were nice and crisp. we got there a little after the 'lunch rush' it seems, because i heard this place gets pretty busy, so we actually got to sit and enjoy this wonderful meal. nice, quick & inexpensive alternative to the lebanese taverna sit-down i more often frequent in DC. overall, a great experience and i'd definitely go back.

good ethnic deli place. once i ordered a party tray of vegitable (more like salad) they were unusual and good. i would not repeat more than a few occasion but it was still good. i think this place is more geared toward female patrons since many on menu then to be for people conscious about weight. my impress anyhow. and more female eating in than male. hey there u go. must try place. they also got restraurant version of this in silver spring and va. they have much nicer decor (va one). they them out.

As me and my coworker waited for our food we got a sample of spinach and lintel soup with fresh pita bread straight from the oven! They offer a lot of specials Monday is 25% off sandwiches! Tuesday buy one get the second half price.

Their food is good and predictable. I always get takeout. However, at this location specifically, they are slow and the customer service is lacking. They could be a bit friendlier and more attentive to their customers. My regular orders consist of kafta and shawarma sandwiches, hummus, tabouli, and yogurt salad. The falafel can be hit or miss. The pita is always amazing.

  • Carolyn H.

Delicious, fast, and reasonably priced. Great service too. We will definitely come back. I'm not sure if they've changed management or what, but this place is drastically different than what a lot of the reviews portray.

  • Cally W.

Everything used to taste the same! The hummus, the baba ganoush. There was no difference. Always reluctant to go back, it is out of convenience that I went today. To my surprise, I noticed a change in recipe for the baba ganoush and possibly the hummus and shakshouky. FINALLY I can taste a difference in what I'm eating! There's some unique flavor. Thank goodness they got the message. Please work on the fatayer. It has no flavor. Nice improvement. Keep it up. I'd love to raise to 4 or 5 stars.

I've had better shwarmas from street merchants outside of busy nightclubs. There is no love in the food, the service is surly. Even the bread is dry and musty. I had to try once but definitely won't be back.

  • Carol K.

Chicken shawarma is dry and doesn't come with garlic sauce. Also, it tasted kinda salty. I've had delicious chicken shawarma in MI, this no way compares....disappointed! Think I will stick to Moby Dick for Mediterranean food!

I had a long day at work so I decided to pick up takeout from this spot. Seems like a great little spot to go to for lunch or a quick dinner. I got the chicken shawarma sandwich, hummus, and salad. WOW--the chicken shawarma was delicious and the flavors were amazing. They give you so much chicken in the sandwich! The hummus was fantastic. Very garlicky. Also delicious. The salad was pretty good as well. Nothing too fancy, but good. The service was pretty quick. The people were friendly. My whole meal was only $10. I will definitely be back again!

The star count is low because there is no way the food is enough to bring me back here to deal with the atmosphere. Let's start with the fact that the ordering area is so cramped when crowded and terrible to try to walk through to get a drink after you order, or to go get your food when your order is up. There were numerous tables that had not been cleared which made options for seating non-existent. The number announcing system to tell you your order is ready should be put on an intercom system because it is insane to try and hear your order when it is called. So now that you have an idea of ambiance, here goes on the food we had... Spicy hummus: Really really creamy and really really good with the perfect kick of spice to it. The pita served with the hummus, is fabulous too, they give you the perfect amount to be able to finish the hummus. Grape leaves: Loved these. Great brine flavor in the grape leaves with a perfect rice and chickpea filling. They were soft and savory and I would have loved two orders. Fatayer trio: Would not suggest this at all. Too bowling alley fried food for my taste. Tasted like freezer items you would buy in bulk at Costco. Plus, if you are trying to get anything near Spanakopita by ordering this, you are in for a horrible let down. The "Spinach Pie" was the smallest one on the plate and there was no flaky golden crispy crust, but a thick fried dough wrapped around a measly amount of spinach and cheese. Those three small plates were our appetizers, for the entree portion, I had the chicken Schawarma sandwich. Not anywhere near the delicious juicy pita I am used to. The chicken was dry and the garlic sauce was really confusing, it tasted very brie cheese like to me. There was tons of meat and the sandwich was huge, but it was just way too dry and not great. If you want a good Schawarma, I suggest you get to Max's Kosher Cafe for an authentic killer create your own turkey Schawarma.

Great food, but spotty service means I will not go to Congressional Plaza again to eat. Recently, they messed up my order and inconvenienced me into oblivion over it. After getting one item removed, I realized that they never recorded another item. As a pregnant mom with a tot, I can't continually be in line waiting. Someone who worked the floor took my money to the cashier to pay for the missing item, but after the trouble I had, I think they should have just corrected the order for free if they wanted to provide excellent customer service. I was not using any coupons or special deals, and felt like the guy at the counter was trying to blame me for his mess up by being inflexible. Give me a break! Next time, I'll go to Rockville Town Center. I understand that orders get messed up sometimes, but I don't have the bandwidth to deal with such inconsiderate people.

I ordered takeout - grape leaves, two Anna's Platters (chicken), and Chicken Kabob. Each entree came with cucumber-tomato-onion salad, rice, and hummus as well as bread and garlic butter. If you're looking for good, reasonably priced Mediterranean food, you should come to Lebanese Taverna.

  • Jessica F.

The food is ok, much too garlicy for my taste and I like garlic. The service is sssoooooo slow. Painfully at times. Everyone in the kitchen and at the register look so dazed and out of it. Every time we go we see a line of people who have already ordered with crossed arms shaking their heads waiting for 20 minutes for a to-go order. Personally I don't think the food is worth that kind of ordeal.

  • F K.

I had a great experience at this Lebanese Taverna location. To be honest, I prefer it over the actual sit-down restaurants. The food is served quickly, tastes great, is reasonably priced and the staff are quite friendly. I've been underwhelmed with the food from some of the actual restaurants (notably the Tyson's Galleria location) but the food is great at this one. It's just fine for eating in, nothing fancy. Take-out is also available.

Good food and very quick service. I order the chicken and it was a bit dry. I also wish the menu had number or combo's you could order. Very authentic menu, and as a first timer I didn't want to not pronounce anything incorrectly or ask about any food. I was intimidated by the menu and ended up ordering chicken, because it seemed the most familiar on the menu. The place was pretty busy for a Saturday, but the line moved VERY fast. almost no wait time. The quality of the other dishes was nice. I went with a friend who dines here often. She said it was a great place, and when I tried her order it tasted delicious. No next time I will be a bit more adventurous and try something I never have before even if I am unable to pronounce it.

  • Arnie K.

This place has horrible service! The staff is indifferent to customers standing around waiting for their orders. The staff is totally incompetent and not trained to perform their jobs. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who needs to be in and out quickly. In fairness, the manager later came over and apologized for the poor service and offered some gratis items. While appreciated, it doesn't make-up for the very long wait.

First off - I love Lebanese Taverna full service restaurants, and the concept of LT to-go is awesome. As a vegetarian, I love stopping in here for consistently delicious plant based options. The hummus is always creamy and their bread is TO DIE FOR. Always warm, soft, thick and chewy. Their fattoush is the best I've ever had - I crave it (same as with the sit down locations). It is tangy and the vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The spinach lentil soup is delicious, I have tried and failed many times to make this at home. It is the perfect balance of sour, salty, and spicy. That said, the prices can be steep for small portions (to echo other reviewers). My husband - an omnivore - isn't the biggest fan of their meat options. Usually on the drier end. I think if the prices were reworked, or the portion sizes were increased this place would be 4/5 stars easy.

Labanese Taverna is fine as an overall eating establishment; however, this particular location is not ideal. Today, it took approximately 20 minutes for simple falafel sandwiches to be prepared. This occurred during an extremely slow lunch rush. There were only 3 or 4 other people in the restaurant. The sandwiches were supposed to be served with tahini sauce but we both had to ask for sauce on separate occasions. Also, the ketchup bottle on the table was empty. On the bright side, the potatoes were good and the falafel sandwich was acceptable. Not much else to say.

    (2)
  • Elena S.

Didn't enjoy my falafel. It was sort of run of the mill. The place itself was really dirty. Moby Dick is much better.

  • Elsa G.

The food was very good. We enjoyed the chicken kebab with rice, the lentil soup and the hummus with bread were excellent. Too bad service left much to be desired. The cashier was rude and unhelpful, she even took a phone order while we were in the middle of ordering, and we had to wait until she was done with the call. No apologies were given. The food took a long time to prepare and when we were finally ready to sit, the tables weren't clean. We had to ask the lady to wipe clean a table as she insisted they were clean. They had dry food and crumbs we could see. She finally relented and acted as if we were inconveniencing her. The floor looked as if it hadn't been sweeped in a while. Not sure I will go back.

  • Joshua H.

I wasn't impressed with the chicken schwarma I ordered but the potato sides were great. I got my order to go, it seemed like my wrap was premade and was sitting there for a while. Also the salad was not appetizing one bit. Wouldn't go again.

  • Kabir S.

Never have I been treated so rudely at the register while simply asking a question about the menu. I actually walked out because I felt like the guy taking my order had better things to do. Never going back to this location!

  • Elizabeth P.

I have never dined in, but a friend of mine ordered takeout from here and I went with her to pick it up. My initial reaction: the restaurant has a fast food atmosphere with sit down restaurant prices. The food was very tasty, but not that much to eat. We were 6 people and the order was about $60. The food was good, but not worth the price in my opinion.

    (3)
  • Brendon B.

This place was absolutely filthy. When I see a restaurant that keeps its dining room as disgusting as this place, I can only imagine how clean the kitchen would be. We ate here in a pinch and regretted it. The food was extremely salty. We won't be back.

  • Ben F.

I don't think I have ever had a bad meal here. Love the chicken shawarma sandwich, the kafta sandwich, the Harriet soup, kafta Harry, etc. I have an Israeli friend who raves about the mouzat (braised lamb shank). Have also had and enjoyed the Lebanese Feast, which includes lots of traditional sides like hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, falafel, grape leaves, etc.

  • Jaime S.

Be careful. It's easy to get ripped off here. Several times we have ordered carry out and picked it up only to arrive home and learn that some of the food we ordered and paid for is not there. I'm beginning to think this is done deliberately to maximize their profits. But you know you order something after a long day, and you're too tired to double-check the order. Don't make our mistake. Although the food is good, you need to be very careful about ordering carry out. There is also frequently a language barrier at check out. We have given up on this Lebanese Taverna location.

A longtime resident of the area, I'm normally a big fan and frequent visitor to Lebanese Taverna's locations in Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda, and the main restaurant in Woodley Park, where I live, but I had a terrible lunch today at the Rockville (Congressional Plaza/Twinbrook) location and was very disappointed. The kitchen staff are not doing a very good job with quality control. I ordered a meze platter with hummos, felafel, spinach pie, shakshouky (eggplant-pomegranate salad), and chicken shawarma. The plate came out and was drowning in dressing from the shakshouky and grease from the chicken shawarma, so much so, that it ruined my felafel and spinach pie. The felafel and spinach pie probably came out of the kitchen nice and crispy, but because the chicken grease and shakshouky dressing had not been drained first, they were both a soggy mess by the time the food made its way to me. The felafel were also awful because they had been fried in oil that was at the wrong temperature, and as a result, the inside of the felafel was a wet, greasy mess. Making matters worse, my plate was delivered with no tahini sauce for my felafel, only garlic sauce for the shawarma. The chicken shawarma was so salty, it was almost inedible. My guess is that a brined chicken (often sold this way these days) was used, and then the kitchen staff added more salt during cooking. Gross. I'm not normally one to return my food, and I was in a rush today, but if I had had more time, I would have sent the plate back to the kitchen. Paying $12 for a lousy lunch makes me feel robbed, among other emotions. Because I know Lebanese Taverna is capable of better, I gave them 3 stars, but for today's meal, they really only deserved 1 star.

Yum yum yum! I've been to this location a couple times now and have been nothing but pleased with the experience. I'm a girl who likes to try different places but when I find something that's good, I will be coming back for me and this definitely holds true with Lebanese Taverna. So I've never had Lebanese food before but when my friend who is authentic tells me this is the spot to go for food, I trust her. I always get the traditional platter and they give you a crap load of food. I don't know why I always get this just for myself because each time I do, I sit and wonder why I didnt split it with someone. Their hommus is smooth and tasty and their baba ghanoush is fantastic as well. I could really just order those two things and be happy. The only thing I haven't been able to wolf down has been their grape leaves. Parking is a complete beezy at this place so bring your patience and bring your wallet.

A great place for anyone who has an appetite! The people here are so friendly striking up conversation at any given time. I had the Shawarma with chicken and a side of fries. I just really wanted fries that day and they just so happened to be on the menu! :) What a great way to spend lunch. Food came out hot and seasoned. The garlic dip they had was fantastic too! I kept dipping my fries in it while everybody else used the bread. This is a place I would love to come back to time and time again!

Standing in LT right now while waiting for my catering order that was supposed to be ready 15 minutes ago. My company orders from here for events 1-2 times a month and I have this issue every time we pick food up. Also, the containers always leak/spill in my car so we specifically ask that they are double packaged ahead of time to avoid this and they never do. I will probably have to wait another 20 minutes for that.

My wife eats here about once every week. They know her so well that by the time she walks in and gets to the register to order, the meal is almost ready! That meal would consist of a chicken shawarma sandwich with tahini sauce. I branch out a little more than she does and will usually get Olivia's platter and alternate between falafel, dolmas, hummus (spicy, garlic and regular) and Lebanese salad. We also frequent the fine dining version on Bethesda for more of an "experience" but when you are looking for something quick and delicious, Lebanese Taverna Cafe is the way to go.

  • Shachi B.

I always order the Olivia's Sampler when I eat here and so far, it hasn't let me down. Is it the best Lebanese food I've ever had? Absolutely not. Does it make for a fun spot in my otherwise bland lunch rotation? You bet. I usually order rice, a falafel and baba ganoush as my platter options, but there are about 15 other choices, so don't be afraid to mix it up. The only thing I'd change is their pita bread - it's dry, overly chewy and always served cold. I prefer warm and soft pita, but that's just me. Overall, a thumbs up!

Hygiene issues. I won't be back. Also the staff was a bit surly. There are better Lebanese options in Rockville.

This is a very compact, low-key LT, I think one of the first ones...so it's modest and small. Not like the one in Tysons 2 or Bethesda. It's got the same yummy stuff though, the best hummus IMO. I always stop here when I am in Rockville for some Lebanese treats.

I miss Lebanese Taverna more than I can express! I have yet to find Lebanese food (even a reasonable substitute) in the past places I've lived since DMV. Tried a variety of dishes here and often ordered a platter (Lebanese Feast or Supreme Feast) for takeout at the end of the week and leftovers were always tasty. Granted they are best shared w/friends and family due to volume of food but if you want to try a delicious, fresh meal...LT is it! The toum....ahhh, the toum (garlic sauce)....I still dream of it and have even made my own in an attempt o recreate but I miss LT and will be back!!

Went there with a bunch of friends during an extremely busy period due to a convention in the area. Note that I am giving these guys a straight three because of the massive crowd they had (there was a line just to get in), so their game may have been off that night. That being said, the food really wasn't anything to write home about. The tomato on the kabobs was runny, and the kabobs themselves were rather plain (though we did get lucky since they ran out of chicken quite literally after we ordered.) Hoping to try this place again some time we're in the area and hope the rating will reflect their actual service. Until then, I can't really recommend this place, not because it was bad, but because I honestly didn't see them at their best.

Love the Lebanese Taverna Cafe(s). We want one now in Bethesda, in addition to the sit-down restaurant! We go out of our way to go to the Lebanese Taverna Cafe(s). There are two in Rockville, both mostly the same (though the one in downtown Rockville has more space and better seating). Really good, tasty, fresh Middle Eastern food. Love the lamb dishes. Love the small plates. Really, love everything about the cafes -- except that there isn't one in Bethesda, where we only have the upscale restaurant. That's good too, but they would absolutely crush it in this neighborhood if they converted part of the space into a take-out/cafe space. We have small kids, so the sit-down restaurant is a bit over the top for us.

I love the convenience of the cafe version of Lebanese Taverna. You can sit down here but you can also get take-out. I always get the falafel sandwich and it's great. It comes on one of their homemade warm pitas with radishes, tomatoes, and tahini. The falafel is really well made, too. The service is fast and friendly. I've never been disappointed!

While living less than a mile down the road from this Lebanese Taverna location I became an addict! I would stop by here at least once (sometimes twice or three times) a week, and grab some food to bring back home. The small dining area is usually full, and for that reason I always ordered take-out. Their hummus and pita is very different than what I am used to, but that is not to say it is not good; it is GREAT! I always made sure to order that along with my take-out...sometimes I would only order that and that alone! I also recommend their kabobs. Baklava here is amazing as well. Calling ahead and then picking up your order always means quick and easy service. Staff is cordial and helpful, but not overly friendly. The biggest downfall is the congestion of the shopping plaza it is located in; parking is always full and there are tons of people coming in and out of all the shops and restaurants. If in the area, definitely stop by!

Mouzat I like right across this place it has good food. I am writing this review for just one thing "The Mouzat" One of the best braised lamb dish i have eaten. I have been to many Persian/Lebanese cuisine of all of them i have ever went this lebanes taverna is the best for this dish. Its one of the tastiest Lamb dishes ever eaten. its $16 and its worth it. The same mouzat in any other restaurant i tried cannot match up with Lebanese Taverna and they cost from $22 to $26. Go and try.

It's a scientific fact that you can burn eleventy-billion calories shopping for baby gear at Buy Buy Baby, so you should definitely refuel on Mediterranean food. Chicken shawarma is delicious on the sharp end of the spectrum, and the kafta are tops on the earthier end. The side dishes aren't too exciting, but hey, they have wine and beer.

This place has quality food and a well kept establishment. I almost always just get the hummus with ground meat so I can't comment much on the food but the hummus is amazing and I know my hummus.

The food at Lebanese Taverna is very good. It's not going to be a show-stopper, but for a quickly-prepared informal restaurant- it's perfect. I use this place to introduce friends to a wide variety of foods without scaring them away with deep ethnic dishes. All the dishes are good, I recommend starting with a few samplers. Fair warning: The portions are huge! Service, as always, is prompt and attentive without being pesky.

  • Jodi G.

The food here is just ok...that's about it. I had the Mediterranean platter. The hummus was ok. The grape leaf was ok. The pita was ok. The other parts of the platter were ok...I had a piece of baklawa to go. It was definitely NOT good. It was the worst I've ever had. :-( The fountain drink was $3-ridiculous. Seating at this place is really uncomfortably cramped when full. It feels like your butt is in someone's face when you are shimmying between tables. Ugh.

Love this place! I love all Lebanese Taverna, but this one is great. For the amount of orders they have and how much food they give you, the service is quick and courteous. Although the menu is not as extensive, they still offer the best dishes at affordable prices. The Turkish coffee is kinda strong and you don't get much for $1.95. All of the food is served hot and you get free bread. The location is great but could be better for how busy this place is. You can eat here after doing a day of shopping in the area. I do think the bottled water is a bit too pricey. There is plenty of seating and it is family-friendly.

  • Aaron W.

Good food, good prices, never a problem with quality, they clean up your table. Not a lot else to say if you've ever had Mediterranean fare; it's basically exactly what you'd expect. I usually don't tip there because I follow a 2/3 rule: to get a tip, they have to: take your order at your table, bring you your food, and/or clean up your food; at LT they do one of the three, not 2.

    (3)
  • Afshin D.

Expect to spent about $30.00 for two. The food is good but for the price you expect better. The lady Cashier has zero personality and always rushing you, i personally think a machine can do her job much better. I love the humous and their fresh bred. As I said i would give them 4 starts if the prices were a bit reasonable or the portions were more generous.

I can sometimes be a creature of habit so I always get the same thing, the Fatteh with eggplant. Delish! My daughter had the falafel and she didn't like it. She said it was too salty. She didn't like the salad and rice because they put onions in it. I will just keep getting what I know I like and it's all good.

  • Cynthia L.

We ordered: falafel platter, kafata platter, and hummus. I really don't like lamb so I didn't like the hummus (which had lamb) and the kafata (lamb and beef mixture. I personally think Mobydick's hummus is better. I've never had a falafel before and I liken to a Middle Eastern veggie burger/sandwhich (I thought it was decent). The (side) potatoes were a little too soft for me but fries were ok (who could really mess up on fries?). For a first time this place was ok but nothing to rush back for. I wanna give this a 3.5 star but I'll have to do with 3.

I'm a much much bigger fan of the bigger restaurant locations, and actually of the other locations of the "fast food" Taverna versions, such as in Silver Spring and Rockville center. That said, this was a nice find on a day when I was unlucky enough to go try to shop with my sanity intact over at the Whole Foods in the same plaza (aka the 3rd ring of hell). Much the same food as other locations, this one did fine by me with the food. It's a little cramped inside. And when we first entered we were mixed up in a small area with people waiting for their food, people standing in line, and people who had no idea what the hell was going on (what is a fuh,,,lay,,,fell? Huh?). Don't stand there if you ordered, dummy. Go sit down. There's a very friendly lady who comes around and if you don't hear your number called she either comes and repeats it in the dining room or when you raise your hand, she brings it to you if you're too dang slow to get up and get it. That said, be sure to leave her a buck or two when you go :P I give it 3 for the cramped size, difficult (for me...refer to my Whole Foods review) location, and dopey ordering area. The food is just as good as the other locations, which makes it quite allrite by me :D

I can't drive by Congressional Plaza (where the whole foods is located on 355) without making a stop at Lebanese Taverna. I am a fool for good lamb dishes and they have great lamb. In particular, the Sharhat Ghanam is fantastic. It is lamb in an amazing pesto sauce with long grain rice and a greek style side salad. I usually just mix everything together in the pita and wait for my eyes to roll into the back of my head. Get the Sharhat Ghanam. It's the best thing I have had there. When I do call-ahead it's ready in 10 minutes, then I have an excruciating ride home as I nibble pieces of pita bread in anticipation. Come to think of it, get a second order of pita bread if you are taking it home with you.

  • Suzanne R.

It's food. I got a Mixed Grill (lamb & chicken kabobs) Platter (It was good, but not something you'd seek out to eat again) Falalfels (needed serious seasoning) & Grape Leaves (They were awful!! Tasted sour and like they'd been soaking in vinegar for days. No leaf stuffing could be tasted) The bread was, by far, the highlight of the meal , but again, it's not something you'd seek out to have again.

I liked it. I'll be simple in this review. It was good. I've had better Lebanese Food, but I've also had worse. It's great for a fast casual sort of chain. Top notch service, though. That's always appreciated. I can't recommend any one thing on the menu, so just buy the whole lot.

  • Kat L.

I ordered something I couldnt pronounce. which is fine. its just not my thing. the rice, the shredded chicken, the hummus, and the bread all tasted the same. I shouldve gotten a quarter chicken dark like I wanted.. but i felt really rushed to order. this was not my idea. i went with a friend. next time i'll eat before I go. ugh. The place was not the cleanest, and I got a cup of water, and was charged for a soda.

Pretty good! I usually get Anna's chicken platter. Food is all pretty tasty, except the chicken, the chicken is a bit dry. I usually don't get full when I leave though...

I don't know a thing about Lebanese food. I've never been to Lebanon. I have never had a Lebanese friend invite me over for authentic cuisine. So, this review will not hold this food to any actual cultural standards. I have, however, tried a lot of hummus (however you want to spell it). I love hummus, but sometimes I hate it. It varies a lot from place to place. Sometimes hummus is too oily. Sometimes it is too bland. This hummus is--for me--the Platonic ideal of hummus. It is so good. But more than that, it is exactly what hummus should be. It is the essence of hummus--in a Styrofoam container.Seriously. Do you know how rare it is to find a Platonic ideal in this world of shadows? DO YOU???? I like to get Anna's Platter with chicken shwarma (comes with hummus (obviously) and Lebanese salad and rice)--but sub out the rice for pita. Because their pita is so freakin delicious, and you absolutely must dip it into the hummus. Oh, and eat your chicken for protein. Whatever.

    (4)
  • Scarlette T.

i love when their food is fresh and warm. i wish they'd toast their pitas a little longer. it tastes better crispy. their hummus is delicious. their soups are ehh. counter service is hit or miss. my usual order is the chicken shwarma and a salad. kind of pricey for lunch but i splurge once in awhile. (hummus, shwarma, salad, drink: $20.) be warned: parking is a nightmare at lunchtime (never been there for dinner).

For what they do, they do it well enough. They are surprisingly good for a chain restaurant, although the service at this particular Rockville location is frequently less than ideal. It's not a gourmet spectacular-spectacular (so don't expect it & then you won't be disappointed! ;-) ), but they do have decent mezze, even if the selection is somewhat limited. Personal favorites are the rolled grape leaves, babaganoush, hummous, & the spinach pie (sort of a spanikopita-like creation).

    (3)
  • Duy N.

pretty decent place. this is the congressional plaza site, not the rockville town center (which i hear is quite different). I've had the chicken and the baba ganoush (sp). chicken was the best thing I've had. I'll need to further evaluate this restaurant in the future.

I've been a customer of Lebanese Taverna for five years. To be very honest, I learned (the hard way) that this establishment can either sell very delicious items or blend and once. There is no "OK" or acceptable items but the scale of satisfaction is either "yes" or a "no". And let me elaborate with some examples; their humus is surely of good quality, same as their chicken shawarma; their falafel and lamb is not as tasty and certainly didn't leave a positive impression on me. My suggestion - know what you're getting. If you live nearby and you are in the mood for some middle eastern food - go with the humus or the chicken. Overall an OK vibe, but a little far from real, traditional middle eastern food.

  • Nicole L.

I always thought this Lebanese Taverna is a full size restaurant like the other ones like Tysons Corner. It turned out to be an over-the-counter order type of deal casual sit down place. The menu was not as extensive as the restaurant but there're plenty of choices! My friend ordered the Traditional platter for $9.50 it came with hommos-perfect, babahgarnoush-a tat too much lemon it was very sour, tabouleh- avg, 2 falafel-delicious, 1 kibbeh -very good and 1dolma-yummy! The poofy bread that came with the platter was delicious. I ordered Kafta Harrar $9.50- they are these kofta with lamb and beef - so delicious with a tangy thick Tahini hommos-like sauce., served with pilaf. Whao obviously I haven't been hanging with my middle eastern friends for awhile I missed the food so much. It was delicious!

I have to admit that I love this place and come here at least once a month. I actually prefer the Lebanese Taverna Cafes to the sit down restaurants since it's quick and healthy and GOOD. I usually always end of up getting the same thing (Kia's Platter), but it's a great place to try a lot of different Middle Eastern foods. I take friends there a lot and everyone has loved the food. Yum.

Simple, good, fast Lebanese. It isn't the best ever but it's always reliably good. Their shawarma is good, their roasted chicken is always righteous, their herbed potatoes are good, and even the little things -- the warm flatbread with tahini sauce, the simple little salad with the awesome lemony dressing -- are reliable. I do this about once a month.

  • Grace D.

Pros: Best hummus i've had in the DC area. The baba ghanouj, pita bread, chicken shawarma, and rice are delicious. Fast and usually polite service. Much better/tastier than the sit-down joint in Dupont. Family friendly. Not cheap but not too expensive for the amount of food you get (although portions have gotten a bit smaller in the past year - have been going for years). Cons: Sometimes their chicken can be dry. Not a fan of their tabbouleh (not much or any bulgar in it) or dolma.

This is in Congresional Plaza across the Pike from Twinbrook Metro. You can walk there, and there is a Whole Foods and Container Store in the same complex, although walking entails crossing Rockville Pike. I would have given it the fifth star but the supply is so uneven I dinged them one star -- they used to have a wonderful rice pudding, I think, but never have it. One night we went for the chicken and they didn't have it. So they are a bit uneven in their inventory and on the wholesale side, but spot-on in the kitchen. Ample portions -- the potatoes are very good (my secret is that I buy an extra order and use it in my own soups). Busy place but worth the wait.

I've tried this place 3 times and every time disappointed. The meat is so dry. I have chicken, lamb, ground beef -- it is so NOT good, way to dry. It's a waste of money. The service isn't great either. I vowed to never go here again. The food quality is awful. I love Lebanese food so will have to keep looking.

I like Lebanese Taverna, specially the chicken Shawarma. Last time I went there I had Falafel sandwich and tabouli. The falafel at LT is very good but cones completely ready (no topping options). The place is clean and, although it is not a formal restaurant, it is a good place to have a quick lunch without feeling like eating in a cheap fast food place. If you are in a group, there is plate called Supreme Feast that can easily feed four persons for US$30. The name is not deceiving and It is really a feast! This super dish comes with falafel, hummus, tabouli, tahine, kibbeh, baba ganoush, rice, meat and everything else (dessert included). My wife and I ordered this some time ago and we ate Lebanese food for two days afterwards.

After eating here several times, I'm surprised by the mixed reviews. They've consistently served us good quality food, healthy portions, and priced it reasonably (especially compared to the full version restaurants in Bethesda and the district). I return often and can recommend this branch of the Taverna.

We went here for lunch, and it was busy. I thought it was going to take a while to order, but the line went pretty fast. Overall...the food was okay. I mean, there are better options in this area. Positives: I felt as though the food was fairly healthy. I ordered the dolma/grape leaves and they were very good (despite what one of the other reviewers wrote). My family makes these at home, and I got the impression that the ones at Lebanese Taverna were made by the restaurant (i.e., not out of a can)...but I could be wrong. Another big positive point was the eating area, clean, well decoarated, bright and happy. The woman who gathered the disgarded trays and wiped the tables seemed so sweet and nice. She made me feel more confortable. I got the beef and lamb shwarma, which was good, but could use more lettuce and maybe tomatos? That's just my taste. I did find the meat to be a bit vinigar-tasting, but that could be the marinade they use. The chef's special was Kafta, which I tried a bit of, and it was good. Just seemed like a little quantity-wise for $10.50. I do think the food here is a dollar or two more than it should be, but it seems as though people are willing to pay the $$. My husband said he loved it and didn't think it was pricey at all (so maybe I'm just cheap?). His Chef's special did come with a generous basket of bread. So, while the place itself is nice and clean, and the service seems great, the food itself is good, but nothing amazing. But! With that said, if you're craving lebanese food (but not persian), this is a good option in the Rockville area. Price: I put two dollar signs because a sandwich, drink and a side would come up to about $13.

This is one of my happy places. The food is fabulous, like it is at all Lebanese Taverna locations. I always get the Kia's Platter, which gives you a choice of four mezza items plus chicken (always) or beef shawarma, two good-sized pieces of pita and a side of tsatziki and another pungent garlic sauce/spread. It's a lot of food for ten bucks. I always get a double order of fattoush salad because it's just so, so good. I usually get kibbeh (Lebanese version of meatballs, for lack of a better term...but these are coated in some sort of bulgur batter and fried; tastes better than it sounds) and hummos as well. There are several other platter options as well, and they've taken to running specials that seem interesting. The hummos here is good - perfect texture, not too garlicky. I get a side shaker of olive oil and go to town. I'm not sure what the reviewer below was referring to regarding the female patronage, but this isn't light eating if you work it right (and hi, not all of us are on a diet, and I've known some men who watch their weight as well!) They have gyros and shawarma sandwiches that rock, and another cool thing is the fatteh, which is meat, pine nuts and hummos. It was a little rich for me when I tried it, but clearly good stuff. Other mezza worth checking out are the falafel and the baba ghannouj. There are plenty of options for kids' meals, and I swear I'm coming back for a kabob one of these days. But the Cafe is always a lunch spot for me, and if I get the platter, I'm not really that hungry at dinner. If you want a drink, they have several wines (some Lebanese) to choose from also. The same people have worked here for years and it's a fairly friendly place. It's not huge, so if you have strollers, kids, or a large party, it might take some maneuvering. Please tip the nice bus lady. She's been there since I got back to Maryland in 1999. She'll help you out with whatever you need, and I swear the tables with kids just destroy this place and don't seem to really help to pick up the crap on the floor, so slide her a dollar or two on the table. It's a cool thing to do.

I'm a huge fan of the "real" Lebanese Tavernas, the ones in Tyson's, the original downtown Conn Ave one, and now the new one in Bethesda (my family just ate there over Thanksgiving, and it was a wow!) But this hole in the wall on Rockville Pike has no right to share the same name. I can't believe it's owned by the same folks. IT'S TERRIBLE! I agree with the reviewer who said the falafel is the worst ever-it was like rocks in my stomach, tasteless, hard and greasy. And the tabula salad was wretched-couldn't finish it. Even the pita sucked--and I think that may be the only thing they actually make there, as opposed to thaw. So definitely stick to the "real" LBs; they are great, but this place was awful.

    (1)
  • Chip Z.

Look, for a cafeteria-style fast-food-type place, this Congressional Plaza mini-Lebanese Taverna is really good. The chicken shwarma is sooo good. Some great specials if you happen to hit it right. People seem to like the pita although I consider it pretty bland. And for kids, the best chicken tender-french fry meal for $4.50 you could imagine. For that part of the Pike, there's not much better to be found that is quick like that. Seating can be tough to find during rush-hours; service can be spotty. I'd give it 3.5 if that was an option.

  • Mr. H.

I visited the Lebanese Taverna at that new Rockville center and I can't even remember the last time I looked forward to visiting a place and ended up leaving so disappointed. The first thing about this place is there's no table service. You have to get your own drinks and order your food over the counter. That doesn't remind me of any Greek or Lebanese "taverna" I've ever been to (and I've been to both in those respective countries!) There was 12 of us and we even had to get our own table together. The so-called mezze menu was VERY limited. There was the usual hummus and baba-ganoush and falafel but much, much smaller selection that you would find at an authentic Lebanese restaurant. The falafal is dry and tasteless, the kubbideh is just as uninteresting, the dips had no flavor and the bread tasted stale. Only the tabouleh was palatable. I ordered schwarma which tasted overcooked and bland. There was no tahineh in it. I had to get that myself from the counter. To add insult to injury, I tried a rice pudding for dessert (that's not even Lebanese dessert but that was pretty much all they had and I was still hungry!!) and it tasted like cold rice. There wasn't even any cinnamon to sprinkle on top if it. Next time, I know where I'm NOT going for Middle Eastern cuisine.

At first, the restaurant was named T.J. Applebee's RX for Edibles and Elixirs. After the concept was acquired by W.R. Grace and Company, the restaurant was renamed as Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. Later the company and the Applebee's concept changed hands with Abe Gustin and John Hamra who started the first Applebee's franchise restaurant in Kansas City.

Later in 2007, IHOP Corp. now known as DineEquity, Inc. acquired Applebee's and began their journey together to make Applebee's the world's largest full-service restaurant chain. Today, Applebee's serves at more than 1,830 locations worldwide. The Applebee's menu ranges from Appetizers and Salads to heavy meals consisting of ribs and steak.
