...."bread".... Ive been here about 3x in the year I've moved here from San Francisco. I'm done with the poseur places. Amalfi's is real. I can't get it out of my mind. Love the salad, bread, bring it on.

Despite how long Amalfi's has been in Rockville I was unaware of this hidden gem. The staff are friendly, warm and well versed on the menu and happy to suggest a superb meal depending on your tastes. The food is awesome and the servings generous so count on having leftovers. Not sure how they make their bread but it's addictive for sure. Used them to cater my parents 65th wedding anniversary and all the party guests are now ravings fans as well!

Super family friendly Italian restaurant as you can tell based off how many families you will see. It is in an unexpected and unassuming location in Rockville where all the warehouses are. Wouldn't really recommend the food here mainly because it's just average Italian food. Nothing seems amazing in my opinion but I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food in the first place. I ordered the carbonara which was good but not necessarily the best. You can't go wrong with carbonara, honestly. The server was friendly and refilled my water frequently enough. I went on a busy night and there were a lot of big groups so the restaurant did get a bit noisy.

I love this place so much, I don't even know where to begin with this review! My in-laws have been coming here since the early 80's (and my husband since he was a baby!) and I quickly fell in love with this place too. Whether we do carry out, eat in, or it's a special occasion, John always takes great care of us and makes us feel like we're the only customers there! We went for my birthday and his brother, the chef, even made us a special appetizer. They always remember us by name and are so friendly and welcoming, and dining there is just a treat. NOW FOR THE FOOD. I haven't had a single thing there I didn't like--stand-outs are the white pizza with cheese, tortellini mushroom cream (TO DIE FOR), chicken or veal piccata, chicken penne asparagus, chicken fettucini alfredo, sausage porcini mushroom, pork bolognese, ravioli...even the side of vegetables you can get with your pasta is amazing (mushrooms and broccoli usually). It's torture to pick what I want to eat there because it's all so good! OH, sometimes as a special appetizer they have crispy cannelloni stuffed with ground veal with a nutmeg alfredo sauce..INSANE. For dessert, the limoncello cake is divine---light and fluffy, not too sweet. I'm sure I'm forgetting other amazing dishes! They also have a few homemade pastas you can sub in for only $2, and they really could charge more--they are so, so good! You will never want to eat storebought pasta again! They have been making a lot of upgrades in their food quality (though I had zero complaints before!!) and usually have 1 or 2 nontraditional dishes that always sound amazing. They've struck a great balance of keeping the menu favorites-authentic Italian food-but also changing the menu up a bit and offering various specials. It's not fancy/dressy inside, but rather is very warm and cozy--exactly what you want from a good Italian restaurant! Not only John but all of the servers and staff are incredible. This will be our favorite restaurant forever and ever!!

Excellent food combined with thoughtful service and an enthusiastic owner made our evening out a night to remember. The sea bass was succulent, pan fried with a crisp crunchy top and melting white insides. The fettuccini came with a sauce correctly flavored with nutmeg. The salads were works of art in presentation but such fresh looking greens. Amalfi's has one dessert they prepare in-house -- the Tontino (sp??) but the selection of other desserts was excellent. The lemon Mascarpone cake with a small scoop of strawberry ice cream was perfect. They had a toasted almond ice cream bar topped with sugar that had been caramelized (as in crème Brule) that was meltingly delicious. Several folks had wine and the oenophile in our group noted that the wine menu was small but the food more than made up for it. One of our group asked for a lemoncello basil drink and the bartender made it to her specs despite it not being on the drink menu. We arrived at 7 pm and closed the place down at 10. We were a group of 8 and noting the menu offered separate checks but would have an auto 20% tip, we went for that option.

Loved loved loved this place! I think this is going to be one of our new spots. It's adorable and cozy and friendly.... and, most importantly, has the best Italian food that I've had in Maryland. Seriously. My fiancé wanted to go here last night for his birthday dinner. He had some story about how he used to go to some other restaurant when he was growing up that had the most amazing white pizza, and when that restaurant subsequently closed then Amalfi was the only place that subsequently had this same white pie (or something very comparable). So we went here... and I was so surprised by how much I loved it! The décor is simple and classic. There are some brick elements, some flowers, some posters with scenic views of Italy on the walls, some photos of the family that has owned the place for many generations. Our server, I believe his name was Moe, is the owner (his father is the one who opened the restaurant initially) and he was so wonderful and so friendly! His energy was magnetic. I asked him what he would recommend between the fettuccine alfredo and the eggplant parmesan, and he talked about both dishes with so much love and enthusiasm. He clearly is very passionate about Amalfi and loves his job, and that happiness really is infectious! I could really go on and on about him. He was absolutely wonderful! And the food? Divine. We started with a small white pizza and it was literally as amazing as my fiancé said it would be. I love a good white pizza, and I feel like I'll never be able to enjoy others as much anymore. We talked to the waiter about it and the secret is really in the cheese. I won't give it away but I will say that it's an imported fontina and that they spent a LOT of time testing out different cheeses to get it just right! We also split a small Caesar salad, which was delicious, had maybe some garlic, and a really wonderful fresh Parmesan flavor. For my entrée I got the fettuccine alfredo after talking to the waiter about the sauce (which they make to order, instead of having a big vat of watered down, thin sauce in a large pot!) The sauce was thick and creamy, and not very oily. They put some nutmeg in their alfredo sauce, which some people may not like but I really enjoyed. It was exactly as a good fettuccine alfredo dish should be. I am drooling for more! And finally: dessert. It was my fiance's birthday, after all, so even though we were bursting at the seams we couldn't do without! We ordered a cannoli (which they gave to us for 50% off since it was his birthday) and they brought it out (while singing) with a candle and "happy birthday" written in hot fudge. The cannoli was fresh and delicious, and not overly cheesy or sweet. I have had the pleasure of dining at some really amazing Italian restaurants in my life, and Amalfi reminds me of some of the best places in New York City or Philadelphia. The food is fresh, made to order, and authentic (inasmuch as fettuccine alfredo can be authentic, anyway.) They have a passion for what they do and the family has a lot of love for the food and their patrons. I told my fiancé that even though we live half an hour away this was going to be a place we frequent often. Forget Little Italy.... Make the trip to Rockville instead and check this place out!

My whole family loves this restaurant. The food is sooo fresh (they grow some of their own spices, fruits and vegetables)! The service is fantastic. Huge smiles on all their warm and professional staff. The prices are great. The atmosphere is very nice and kept very clean.

My husband and I were craving good Italian food on a rare date night out and with the help of Yelp, we found Amalfi. We came on a Wednesday evening around 5:30 and there were only a couple other tables filled. It was really cute inside, much different than you would expect from the exterior. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and extremely attentive. The meal began with delicious house made bread and butter. Seriously the bread was SO good! I ordered the Chicken Parmesan and my husband had the Chicken Marsala. We both thought our chicken dishes were fantastic. We especially noticed the quality of the chicken. Really top notch! We ended our meal splitting the tiramisu. We both enjoyed it as well. We will definitely come back! One thing to note is if you are looking for a trendy place with experimental Italian cuisine, this is not the place. But if you're ok with most of the clientele being at least 40 years older than you and looking for real deal authentic Italian, you're in the right place!

This place is pretty good. Not fantastic 5 Star worthy, but definitely a 4 star experience for me. I booked a reservation through open table since there were 7 of us and we had a pretty great experience. Food: 4/5 Stars Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo - Noodles a little dry, 2 chicken breasts Fettuccine Alfredo w/ side of Sausage - Noodles a little dry Linguine Meatballs - 7/10 rating Penne Sausage Arugula - Portion size a little small Eggplant Parmigiana & Sausage w/ Linguine - huge portions, delicious! Shrimp w/ fra diavolo sauce - 7/10 rating Service: I noticed something interesting. It looked like to me, that only certain tables got the Owner's son as a waiter. He was our server, and he was great, but I noticed that he had tables in all different sections. I have a theory that he probably only waits on big tables or reservations. Nonetheless, he was very attentive, funny, always laughing and smiling (to the point that sometimes it was creepy). He was the most welcoming server I've ever had.

Don't let the sketchy exterior and location deter you. The inside is clean and a delight. The dishes I tried were salty and filling, but could still be a nice place for a date

Whoa...talk about out of the way! This little hidden gem is just what the doctor ordered. The interior setting is beautiful and the food is understated and delicate. If you like potent flavors then this is not the place for you. If you like Italian food like you'd get in Italy then this is the place for you! The private seating area in the back makes me want to bring a close group of friends back for a fun soiree. I'll be coming back for sure.

I love to come here with my family. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. I've never had a bad meal here. The white pizza (with a side of marinara for dipping), eggplant parm and veal marsala are on my top favorites list. It's always delicious!

Being from the West Coast, I wanted to find an Italian restaurant that was like genuine East Coast classic Italian, the-people-have-accents good. TO THE YELP!! Tucked between a few industrial buildings, Amalfi's charm doesn't really start until you enter the restaurant through a single, thick door. Then, at least for us, a lady with a thick accent (CHECK) sat us at a table and my East Coast Italian adventure began! The menu was as I expected, nothing that was off-the-charts unique, but a bunch of classics hopefully done well. (CHECK) Top Dog - Fried Calamari - I've had some bad calamari, and some guuuuuud calamari, and this was good. A little lemon squeezed over the top and some classic marinara - BOOM! CaaaaaaalaMaaareeeee! And a great ratio of rings to tentacles, which is soooo important. Contendor - Sausage and Mushroom Rigatoni - I was expecting slices of sausage, but I think I prefer what I got, which was a hearty red sauce with ground sausage and mushrooms. Didn't jump off the page, but it held its own. Quite tasty Surprising - Salmon with capers in a lemon and white wine sauce - I wouldn't have ordered fish at an Italian place. Pasta, lasagna, pizza, veal, etc. But laydeez and jents, I bring to you a new segment which will air often in the future, WIFE SAYS!!!!! (it is what my wife says about it [Yeah, I'm genius like that {and the punctuation on these parenthesis is blowing your mind!}]) WIFE SAYS "It was the right kind of juicy. No, juicy isn't the right word. It was moist, and with the sauce, it was just really, tremendously delicious. The portion was great too. I would order it again." Disappointing - HARD BUTTER!! COME ON!! How hard is it to let the butter sit and soften for a while! Jeepers. We also had a great tiramisu and were very happy with our dinner.

An update after thinking this was the best Italian place for us has me thinking not! First, a few times ago we took my wife for her birthday so we had a fairly large party, around 10. I do expect some service let down. We all ordered our dinner and it came out in a decent amount of time, except mine. I waited and waited while I watched everyone eat their dinner. Finally, after 10--15 minutes, I got up and told the waitress to cancel my dinner as it was totally unacceptable for mine to be 10-15 minutes later than everyone else at my table. They quickly got it to me and comped it but, the damage was done. This past weekend I took my wife their for Valentines day as that is where she wanted to go. We got there and were seated at 4:20, 10 minutes earlier than our reservation. My wife decided she wanted to try the $30 hanger steak. She liked it, but I could tell she didn't have that "wow" factor on her face. I tried it and kind of laughed and told her I was glad I didn't order it. In my opinion, it was simply bland. It was cooked to perfection, but there was absolutely no flavor to it other than the steak itself. The biggest problem was that it took us over an hour to get our dinner! The waitress was very attentive, and came out and told us that they had 3 other ones to cook as well and that was the hold up. Either way, totally unacceptable to wait that long. Also, as stated before, the prices are kind of outrageous for what you get. Their chicken marsala is $20 and that doesn't include any pasta. If you want that, it is an additional charge and they bring it out with a red sauce on it. I go to Fontina Grill and love their chicken marsala. for $15 you get enough to feed two, and the pasta is included right on the plate. As much as I like Almafi, I think it is time to call it a day and go back to the places that make me happy.

I have been putting this off for awhile because I hate writing one star reviews, but I know it must be done. My family and I came here for dinner because my dad remembered going for dinner 35 years ago and loving it. It became very apparent very quickly that those people must have retired. The food sure was different but nothing else was. The chicken piccata was just a huge 6-8 inch thick not breaded or seasoned boneless chicken breast with a bad tasting sauce on top. They say on menu served over a bed of pasta but then instead give you a side of pasta with red sauce. It was cold red sauce. The two veal dishes were so salty and the meat was hard and very over cooked and rubbery. The only thing edible was the eggplant Parmesan though it was no better than the frozen stuff from trader joes. I agree with other people that this place is a perfect candidate for Gordon ramsays kitchen nightmares

The food continues to be excellent at this great restaurant. However, after coming here for over 30 years I have noticed that portion size of just about everything has lessened dramatically. previously portions were "man-sized" and worthy of sharing. Now portions are barely acceptable! Example: Fried Zucchini used to be a very generous serving. Currently the size is about 15 thin slices . Consider how cheap a zucchini costs and the fact that this appetizer now costs $7.50 and you can see how small sizes are very profitable. The taste is always excellent, however, the value has diminished.

I gave the place another try since I couldn't get over how amazing there cannoli was...But food? Nah. Gnocchi medium , their angus steak was good but not amazing and over priced ... But it was good and if ur really in the mood to go to amalfi def get the steak ... Ravioli? I remember the ravioli to be so much better before , this time it wasn't as fluffy and the filling was curdy goat cheese it was not palatable at all! What I do suggest to amalfi is that ur flavours are all off, cooking techniques are good but u need to perfect ur own Taste before u serve ! :) And again , they Have The Best Cannoli !

How have I lived in the area for so long and I had no idea about this place? My family and I have visited twice. It is a little off the beaten path - but a good find. The salads are excellent. My mother in law LOVES the goat cheese ravioli. I really like the eggplant parm - it is not heavily breaded and fried - it is very light and tasty. We've had the same waiter both times (the owners' son). He is quite peppy and seems to really love his job. -1 star for the old decor/bathrooms. It definately looks like an old family restaurant...so I guess there is some charm in that. I don't find it dusty and dirty as someone else mentioned - it was clean, just old looking.

Decent service. Salads are high point -- quite good. Soup - potato leek was weak. The Chicken Piccata was not appetizing in presentation and the pasta was drowning in oil. Grated cheese should be fresh -- hard to know what you are getting out of shaker. Salt shaker content was hardened. Friends meals -- also highlighted salads as good. But, goat cheese ravioli was overwhelmed with marinara sauce so difficult to know what you were eating. Any chance of subtlety in tastes were gone. I was disappointed and prices were really high for quality provided. I would give it a second try but provide specific instructions on entree presentation and sauce uses. And the salad are fine.

Highly, hlghly overrated. We came here for dinner one night and were seated up the stairs in the back. Our waiter seemed like this was the last place he wanted to be, and he spoke low/ very quietly and MUMBLED everything. I honestly could not hear/understand much of what he said to us. We ordered a white pizza, which was ordinary. The veal saltimbocca was sooo incredibly salty. I'm sorry, the prosciutto does NOT need extra salt! Our other dish was chicken of some sort or the rigatoni, which was mildly average as well. Obviously not memorable enough for me remember since those are two completely different dishes.

Such a cute place. My husband and I went to Amalfi for the first time on Saturday afternoon and we were very pleased. The waitress was adorable and very efficient. Everything was made in house (from the bread to the pasta) and the restaurant is family owned, being a Italian mom and sons the chefs. The food was really tasty, perfect for the day before the Nation's triathlon!!

I used to live in MD and this was my favorite italian restaurant to go to. Now I've moved to VA, but i still make the drive back over the river to eat here. When my parents visit they always ask to eat here again too. I have been here so many times and have never been let down with the food or service. Always greeted at the door and seated promptly, and the service at the table has consistently been top notch. For the food, I have tried many of their specials but on this last visit i got the sausage and mushroom pasta, in a light cream sauce. Others in my party got the lasagna, calamari and eggplant parmigiana. I like their red sauces here, not too thick but still flavorful. We all left happy. Got the rose wine because its just a little sweeter than the blush. They usually give generous portions and I always seem to leave with a take home box. It is in a very surprising area, stuck between warehouse buildings, but its definitely worth the drive over.

Location is terrible I agree with the reviews. It is a nice little mom and pop restaurant and very cozy inside. Came here on a cold Friday night with my Bf. We were very excited because one of our really good friends always talks about their white pizza and pastas. When we arrived it was empty, and there was no one in the front so we decided to sit ourselves. I read in an earlier review about their bread being really warm and good and another complaining that it was cold. Well, we got the cold batch so I did not touch it and I had no intentions of asking for warm bread. I was soo hungry I just wanted to order. We ordered the calamari for two, its a huge portion perhaps for 4 people. We also got the white pizza which I thought was delicious. I got the Tortellini Mushroom Cream pasta which is cheese stuffed tortellini tossed with porcini mushroom cream sauce. It is the BEST mushroom sauce I have ever tasted except that I asked for some prosciutto to top off the pasta and the pieces were really hard , the texture was like an old ham stored in the rock ages. It didn't exactly ruin my meal but it was kind of annoying because I was also paying extra for it. My bf got the Sausage & Peppers pasta which by the looks of it, was really boring and bland. He was thinking that it would be spicy sausage cut up in a pepper sauce over pasta. Instead it was two huge sausages and some red peppers cut up ontop of the pasta with barely any tomato sauce. He was very disappointed in his entree. We kind of just ate our food and left. Didnt really talk about it much which means we probably wont be back. I really wanted to like it, especially because their mushroom sauce and the pizza were just that great. I will give an extra star because I think that they have a lot of potential and perhaps it wasnt their best night.

Like other yelpers have said, this restaurant is located in a sketchy area, but don't let that scare you from trying this delicious italian place. Everything seems homemade and authentic. Their white pizza appetizer is a MUST ORDER -- order plenty to go! Had their pasta with calm and tried their gnocchi -- wow the gnocchi is delicious. The calm pasta wasn't too bad, but their white pizza and gnocchi is what stuck out to me. We were so full we didn't have any room for dessert. If I'm in the area, I'll definitely go back here again to get the gnocchi!

My family and i visited Amalfi first time yesterday and we had a great service and the food (salad, white pizza, eggplant parm, tortellini with mushroom) were excellent except for my dish, frutta di mare with tomato sauce. Maybe I should have gotten it with garlic broth. The red sauce did not taste good. My family really enjoyed the experience especially one of the owner's sons who served our table. I would go there again.

While others were taking advantage of Black Friday sales, the gang was busily helping one of our own move from one apartment to another. As a Thank You, we were treated to dinner at a restaurant of our choosing- Amalfi. It was not an obvious choice as none of us live particularly close to the location. The online reviews convinced one friend that it was worth the trek up north. This is a family-owned restaurant that has been opened for over 30 years and is located in an odd industrial area. Service: attentive and helpful. Our waiter was one of the sons of the owners. He looked and sounded like the Oxy Clean guy on TV with the same voice and manner. I would have preferred him to lower his voice by a great many decibels. While half our party was delayed for over an hour, S and I enjoyed the kale and pomegranate salad accompanied by the white cheese pizza as an appetizer. Our waiter declared that 7 out of 10 diners chose white cheese pizza as an appetizer. This was tasty, salty cheese pizza with a fluffy crust - very yummy and total comfort food. The salad was lightly seasoned with olive oil and a little lemon juice and the kale was not at all bitter. Two thumbs up! For the main course, I ordered the salmon, two friends asked for the trout and one requested the osso buco. My veggie was broccoli, while the others all preferred linguini as their side. We were all pleased with our choices. Desserts at our table included gelato, tiramisu, cannoli and cake. I was not a fan of the cannoli, as the pastry shell was too dry for my liking. The others enjoyed their selections. Price: Entrees range in price from teens to low $20s.

Nice staff, nice atmosphere, big tables (bigger than the tables at the restaurants in Italy). All these things are nice but won't affect my review very much, because I care most about the food. I was looking for some authentic Italian food after a trip to Italy. The food here is pretty close to authentic, and the complimentary bread is even better than in Italy. The eggplant parm is really good, not too salty as in most other Italian places. The white pizza tastes very similar to what I had in Italy, but the problem is it is way too salty. I don't know if it's the cheese that is salty or they added too much salt in addition. Anyway, the saltiness almost ruined an otherwise perfect pizza. We got complimentary almond cookies at the end because this was our first visit. The cookies were good.

This was my first time and we went for valentines day. We didn't make a reservation (I would highly recommend doing so on a busy night) but we were seated within their estimate of 30 minutes. They offer wine by the glass, half-carafe, and full carafe. I really appreciated being able to get a half instead of the full bottle. I had the chicken piccatta (which our server recommended) and it was really tasty. I had thought the chicken piccatta would have been over the pasta, but the pasta was actually on the side. All very tasty and server(even on such a busy night) was good. Romantic atmosphere as well.

Solid! Tortellini with mushroom cream sauce was amazingly delicious-- earthy, salty (but not overly so), creamy and tender. Fried calamari was also tender and perfectly fried. Eggplant parm just okay in my opinion-- comparing to another restaurant that's got the lockdown on it. Here, it wasn't crispy or particularly flavorful. I'd pass on the bread next time to make room for their amazing caprese salad. Balsamic adds a nice touch of sweetness to the fresh, succulent mozzarella and fruity tomato. Our server was exceptionally sweet. Even if the food weren't as good I'd come back to be around the staff! I like the ambiance because it reminds me of growing up in the '80s. There's something warm and familiar about it. I don't think every place needs to look like it stepped out of a cookie cutter design magazine, as sometimes I just want to be in a real place. Overall, I'm looking forward to going back. Some kind of picatta or saltimboca is up next...

I've been going to Amalfi for over 30 years - I was there Sat. night and had a piece of halibut that was as good as any I've had. The pasta and sauce have been consistently good over the years and it remains my favorite Italian restaurant in D.C.

This is the perfect example of what a restaurant should be. It hasn't been changed since the late 70s but that's what makes it kind of cool. It is in a warehouse district of Rockville and looks old from the outside but it's one of those secrets. WHY I Will Keep Going Back is for the following the food is great and authentic not big Italian chain. The owners and servers are some of the friendliest I have ever met. They are not stuck up like most the restaurants in the area.

Amazing food from amazing people. The food is top notch and is always fresh. My parents have been going there for about 20 years so we took them there for a family dinner recently and was impressed with every part of our meal. The owners son was our waiter and seemed to really take pride in his family's business. All of the food was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Fish was fresh and all of the parms were off the charts. Calamari was my personal favorite. In my opinion they have the best calamari in rockville. Definitely will come back again soon.

Wow. This place sucks. Period. Decor looks like "old - dusty - dark" and we even sat at a table and watched as about 30 years of dust from an old vent was about to fall on the table next to us. Luckily we made it out alive before getting asbestos poisoning. So yeah....they didn't feel like filleting the Bronzino so that was out. We ordered the mussels and arctic char and both were DRENCHED in garlic but didn't not have a grain of salt or pepper on either....and of course none on the table to help you out. I was SHOCKED at how old this place was and then my fiance told me that this place looked EXACTLY the same since he went there 30 years ago. Um....can you say "Restaurant Impossible?".....yeah. Nasty. Don't do it.

I'd had this place bookmarked since, literally, 2009 and had just never gotten around to going. I love little hole-in-the-wall Italian places and had heard good things. Last night my parents wanted to take my grandma out for dinner somewhere close to her house and this restaurant won out. It started out well... the homemade bread they bring over in a giant basket was really good. But then my water glass was dirty, and my diet pepsi tasted kind of like soap. Things came back up with the white pizza (awesome) and the caesar salad (nothing spectacular but still good). Then I got my entree... fettuccine alfredo. I don't usually get it even though it's my favorite, but I decided to indulge in the 5950849347 calories and just go for it. It sucked. I hate, hate, hate when fettuccine alfredo has nutmeg in it, which I know some recipes call for, but using it makes the entire dish just taste like nutmeg. I had to use a decent amount of salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese just to make it edible. Service was good and the ambiance had the hole-in-the-wall quality that I like, so that was good, but I don't know that I'd be in a hurry to come back here and if I did, I'd stick to the pizza and salad.

I had not been to Amalfi's since 1991 and it really hasn't changed much at all from a decor point of view. I remembered loving their pastas and their white cheese pizza. My friend and I stopped in after an event nearby and because it was after eight, we decided to get Peronis and white cheese pizza. Bottles of Peronis are $5 and a large serving of the white pizza slices (it comes cut in squares and stacked on a serving plate. While it was good, it wasn't the best I've ever had. It was also $17 for the large order. For that price I would rather have a wood burning pizza from nearby Mia's or Pacci's in Silver Spring. Service was fine. I assume they close at ten because the servers started stacking chairs around 9:30ish. I am glad I came back, I am just not sure there is enough of a pull to bring me back.

My husband and I are on vacation in Washington DC, and did a yelp search for Italian food. Based on the good reviews, we tried Amalfi's. Finding the restaurant was a bit tricky, but GPS helped. Parking is horrible, thankfully we cheated and parked in the lot next door since the other businesses there were closed. Walking in, the restaurant is nice, feels like a homey place. We ordered soda and my husband ordered a glass of Merlot. I ordered the bolognese, and my husband ordered the chicken Alfredo. While we waited, we got a basket of bread, which was tasty (I love bread, so I was excited!). The food came pretty fast, and was great. It was far above my expectations (which I will admit isn't saying much since my normal Italian food is Olive Garden). My husband enjoyed his Alfredo as well, stating it was some of the best he had ever eaten (he is much more adventurous than I am, so he did have other restaurants to compare to). We also ordered orange sherbet for dessert since most of the other desserts had nuts, which I am severely allergic to. The whole dinner, 2 entrees, 1 glass of wine, 2 sodas, and 2 bowls of ice cream, came to $45. Not bad in our books. I kinda wish there was a place like this back home, because we would eat there again!

The location is awful if you don't know about it there's no way you can find this place decor is awful and their are no parking spaces. It's either always empty or there's a bunch of older people. The food is great though as well as the servers

Don't let the location scare you. Amalfi's is great, no frills Italian food. As the reviews in the front entrance dating back to the early 80s can attest they have been around for 30 years. There is a reason they've lasted. No visit is complete without ordering the white pizza appetizer. This is the white pizza by which I judge all others. Perfect balance of garlic, cheese, and bread. Simple in its ingredients, unparalleled in its execution. They use a great tomato sauce, and I am a big fan of their eggplant parm. They have a large dining area with a few separate areas, so if you're with a big group or have kids and need to tuck yourself away, they can accommodate you. Amalfi's has a special place in our family lore. My aunt and (now) uncle had their first date here. Fourteen years later, the rest is history.

I dined at this restaurant for this first time tonight- 9/20/13. What a huge mistake it was. Like Chef Ramsay would say to his people on the TV show " You call this Food?" My opinion is, this restaurant serves underseasoned, under imaginative, under sauced, Over Priced Food! It's a Damn Shame that what the cook served me and my lady for dinner and called it itaian food! More like, imitation italian food, not worth consuming!!

I can't review the food or ambiance here because I wasn't allowed in. As a wheelchair user, I can only enter through the kitchen. However, on the night I tried to eat here, I was told that there was an event in the kitchen and the owners didn't want to have to open the door and let me through. Awesome. Way to "second-class citizen" me, Amalfi. One star and no future business for you. Wheelchair Accessibility Review: Technically accessible (Maybe?), but call ahead several hours, or be prepared to be randomly sent packing if you're too much trouble for them.

Reuniting with an old friend... This about sums up dinner at Amalfi a few weeks ago. Amalfi was my and my family's go-to Italian restaurant from the late 80s until about 2000. It was THE place to go for home-style Italian cooking. It didn't matter that it was in an industrial park, that only added to the charm. In relationships sometimes something happens and a friendship may derail for some reason. It may not even be that big of a deal overall, but in the heat of the moment it wrecks everything. In the case of Amalfi it was a night of terrible service on top of average food (I don't even remember the specifics). This was 10+ years ago...We never went back. Flash forward and my family is in town and we decide to return. Everyone was excited, nostalgic even, as this was my grandmother's favorite restaurant in the area and unfortunately she is no longer with us...and just like with those close friendships, it felt like there was no break, everything seemed comfortable as if we picked up where we left off... Great home-style cooking, ultra friendly service, a tremendous variety with many specials etc...The restaurant was extremely busy, we were lucky to have made a reservation. They brought out white pizza for those waiting to snack on which I thought was a nice touch. I'm glad we went back!

I finally convinced Neomi to go to an Italian restaurant because she does not care much for Italian food. Somehow we reached this restaurant through Yelp. When we arrived, we almost missed the restaurant because it is stuck in an industrial area where you do not expect to see restaurant. There were no cars parked outside (and the place was indeed empty when we entered) and Neomi suggested we leave based on the old principle that if you don't need to wait in line for a table the place must be bad. But I convinced her to sit down and order and both of us were pleasantly surprised. We got bread and butter and this bread was fresh from the oven. Neomi had soup and salad which she enjoyed. I had flatbread with proushito and then calamari over pasta, which were both excellent. In sum, a great place.

First time there. Food was great. Rainbow trout picata was well prepared. Nice atmosphere. Waiter was a bit over the top pleasant...a little bit of a negative. Would go back to try some of the other fantastic menu choices.

Man this place is TUCKED away! To get to Wilkins avenue, take Parklawn Drive, cross Randolph Road, and hang a left to Wilkins. You'll be sure you missed it since it is in an industrial park, but just keep going. There are only 3 parking spots (3!!) in the front, and 2 to the side, so you may want to park across the street. It is not much to look at, but the food is worth it. The food is traditional, homestyle italian fare- and it is excellent. Highlights are the tomato/mozz/basil salad, the lasagne, veal saltimbucca, and whatever fish they have on special. They can REALLY cook fish. Not much to add that is not said in the other 40 reviews, but if you want some very good, no frills italian- check out Amalfi's.

So much for nostalgia. Went to the excellent CS Pizza in Rockville to find they're closed on Mondays. Drove across the hated Rockville Pike to try the also highly touted Matchbox. Menu had no simple marinara or margherita pizzas, but instead offered a bunch of specialty pies topped with stuff like bacon and chicken and figs. Figs? Figs. Must be some sort of bad Sopranos joke. Is he still alive? Figs. Figs? Fuggedaboutdashit. So I went to Amalfi's, my family's old red sauce standby since the 1970s, when nobody else made a decent pizza. Felt a little guilty that I hadn't been there for at least 2 years. 7pm and 2 tables filled. Bad sign. Bad pizza. Cheese pizza was like something you'd get at a chain store attached to a gas station. Marinara was blah. Veal pizzaiola , which I've always ordered special even though it's not on the menu, didn't have the old fresh minced garlic and oregano, and was instead covered in a canned tomato sauce like ketchup for your fries. Pasta and veal were both soft as wet bread, suitable, I guess, for the remaining toothless clientele. Figs.

This was probably some of the worst Italian food I have ever had. I ordered the chicken parm that is supposed to be "farm-fresh raised chicken". When it arrived it looked like frozen chicken patties that had been thawed out and fried. The chicken tasted like pure oil out of the fryer, didn't seem "fresh" to me at all. When I asked the man working there if this was fresh chicken he said "oh yes, we brine the chicken so it's juicy"....brine chicken? There was no juice coming out the chicken I had. I was so disappointed because the reviews on this place were wonderful and the food I had was not good at all. I guess I should have known when I walked in at dinner time and there was only one other couple there eating.

Nice little Italian restaurant. Not too good of a location. I ordered the veal saltimbocca. I tried the other veal dish with the lemon/cream sauce too. Both pretty good, neither spectacular though. The white pizza is also pretty regular; I've never experienced a good white pizza although everyone keeps saying when you have it, it's amazing... I'll believe it when I see it. My friend's order was very plain, I can't remember what her dish was called, but I posted a picture of the pasta dish for you.

Most food was good. My dinner, Rockfish, was bland at best. Very nice waitress. Told the owner about my bad meal on way out, after paying for it and tipping appropriately. He blamed me for not liking his fish and told me to eat at McDonalds next time. So I asked him if I, the customer, was at fault. Evidently since I didn't like my meal and told him so, I was at fault. Too bad. Good staff, usually decent/eatable food, bad ownership and treatment of regular customers. Stay far away.

Your heart's desire is on the internet. You just have to properly Google in order to find it. An example: I got it into my head that we needed a little hole-in-the-wall, family-owned Italian restaurant in our lives. The kind with dripping wax candles, and red-and-white checked tablecloths... not Maggiano's, not Olive Garden, not a chain, something rustic, with really great food. First, of course, I asked the locals, the restless natives. I was met with puzzlement. One even asked if I was planning a gangland style hit. har har. (but if I was....) So I googled on "family-owned" italian md, and eventually pinpointed Amalfi as highly promising. I was perzactly correct. We went there last night. I was expecting a location more on an aging main street but its more... semi-industrial park. No matter. It has a brick front and that is also key. There is outdoor seating under a breezy veranda. It had rained, so inside we went. The decor inside was just perfect. Marks off for no red and white tablecloths tho. ;) But they did say they had them in the back. So our waiter comes, and I'm not even joking, its the son of the owners. AND he seems genuinely delighted and proud to be there. That is very cool. Exceedingly friendly service. They had a valpolicella by the glass. Excuse me? By the glass? Yes, please. Valpolicella is a nice light red wine, very drinkable, virtually no aftertaste, light on the tannins. Very nice. And Mike met his new favorite beer, Peroni. Peroni, Mike. Mike, Peroni. Started with the tomato and mozarella, which was wonderful. Mike had veal parmesan, I had chicken marsala. Both were the best we ever had. Yummy. Undaunted, we marched headily into a canoli for Mike, tiramisu for me. Again, best we ever had. And the bill was about half what Maggiano's would charge for 3 courses, two drinks each.

I love the Godfather series (ok Part III was a waste of 3 hours), so I enjoyed Amalfi's purely due to it's traditional Italian, family-style atmosphere. It's located smack in the middle of a very industrial street, the kind where you can easily take people out the back of the restaurant for a discreet whack job. In fact, I feel like that nice party room in the back is where the "family" gathers to decide who goes next. Oh um about the food---the veal was very tender, and the crab linguini was filled to the brim with huge chunks of fresh crab. Our server seemed slightly stoned---he probably only has a job there because the family doesn't know what to do with him (like how Fredo is sent to manage casinos in Vegas). Overall this spot is nice---probably better when visited immediately after watching the Godfather (parts I-II only).

Okay, I'm a tough reviewer. But I have to say, what the folks are saying is true. This place is GREAT. It was a let down at first... I mean, it's very old-school 1970s ristorante familia italiana... dark reddish interior. it also smelled like strong air freshner... which kind of turned me off. Even when I had the "white pizza"... i was a bit let down. It was very "americanized" crust... lots of cheese. not too italian if you ask me. But THEN! we asked for a side of marinara because the pizza lacked some "kick". I... WAS.... FLOORED! This may be the best marinara I have ever tasted in my life. You could taste the freshness! like they picked the tomatoes out back or something. wow. We had the zupa di mare (which is really a kind of cioppino). We got a half carafe of house red... which was also surprisingly good as well! (for only 11 bucks). What pushed this place over the top was it's service. The service is TOP NOTCH. the waitstaff are sooooo friendly and attentive. It's like you've dined at a 5 star restaurant run by your family. We overheard a lot of people alluding to how they are repeat visitors. we even heard waiters saying "nice to see you again". Look, bottom line is that this place is in the middle of nowhere. In order for customers to consistently seek this place out over and over again, there must be something damn good going on inside. And there is. this place rocks. If it weren't for the odd smell and 70s italian restaurant interior, it would be a 5 for me. But food and service-wise it already is a five!

The best thing about going to Amalfi is that you feel like you are back in Italian restaurants that look and taste the way Italian restaurants are supposed to (that is, if you are my age and grew up in America). A family owned restaurant that doesn't look like it has changed much in the past 30 years, Amalfi has never really disappointed me. We were a party of four tonight: a delicious fresh whole flounder, wild salmon cooked with capers and a lemon sauce, tilapia in a white wine sauce and good old eggplant parmagiana. The bread is fresh, the espresso is good, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable.

I came here by myself this past Saturday evening. The complimentary bread that the waitress initially brought me was cold; when I mentioned this to her, she brought me a basket of warm, soft bread within a few minutes. I ordered the popular white-pizza with fontina cheese. It was INCREDIBLY delicious. I requested for a side of marinara sauce which was given to me "on the house." The sauce wasn't terribly flavorful, but it still served as a good condiment for the white pizza. I ordered cannoli for dessert after seein the picture of it on yelp; it was my first time having cannoli and I must say that Amalfi's cannoli definitely beats any NY cheesecake or Tiramisu that I've ever had! The food was fantastic and the service was even better! Do not overlook this fabulous restaurant simply due to its location in a somewhat industrial area.

I will admit that I was skeptical as I drove up. It's near a bunch of auto shops and the exterior (at first glance) gave the same vibe as those places. I was wondering (jokingly) if they'd have a special on an oil change with a dinner for two. Once inside I fell in love with the atmosphere right away. The service was amazing. Our waitress was helpful and very polite. This turned out to be a very enjoyable dinner. We enjoyed prosciutto e melone, tortellini mushroom cream sauce, and saltimbocca. All of this was held together by a bottle of delicious red wine and fresh, warm bread. Later, we enjoyed chocolate mousse and coffee. I will definitely be dining here again.

The food was good; atmosphere was nice. Hosted a bridal shower here in their private party room. The room was decent size for a party of less than 20, but a little cramped for groups larger than that. The staff was very accommodating and personable. I would come back, just for a meal sometime. There parking lot is tiny, but there is some parking on the street at near-by.

Watch yo'self! It's in an industrial park! I guess that I was expecting more as all of the reviews gave me the impression that this place was a spot to be taken seriously. I ended up ordering the Tortellini after initially ordering the lamb shank which wasn't good to me. Surprisingly my waiter exchanged the dishes without any problems. The Tortellini was GREAT! My friend and I were very pleased with it. We also order salads out of hunger and they were pretty good. Our waiter was very friendly and informative and he kept his distance which at times was a little annoying but all in all, I will be back. It has the potential to be a nice date spot. When I walked in, I immediately wanted to sing Beyonce's let me upgrade you because they too could use a major face lift. Maybe HGTV should do a major series on remodeling restaurants in my 'hood.

Incredible: 1) Home made bread, 2) White pizza with fontina, & 3) tortellini in mushroom cream sauce ... I suggest going when the patents are on site. I've been 7 times, but I noticed the cream sauce to be watered down when the "rentals" were gone as well as a big, black hair in my pasta on my second to last visit. Despite the setbacks, the food can be great and the prices are very reasonable.

I love this joint. And that's exactly what it is...an Italian "joint". I hail from New York, right outside of Manhattan. This is where (arguably, of course) you will find some of the best Italian cooking in the world. Ever since moving I have been on the prowl for decent Italian eateries that are reminiscent of those found in the NY/NJ area- with little luck. Amalfi really feels like an older, hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant that I adore. We have ordered the fried calamari for an app (though it's not on the menu- we just ask and you shall receive) and it has always been fresh and light. The rigatoni with vodka sauce is out of this world, though I believe that was a special. I would eat here again and again if it didn't have serious repercussions for my waistline!!

Amalfi has been around for more than 20 years, and it has become my family's old standby for Italian-American food. Everyone leaves happy. As the vegetarian, I like the pear and arugula salad and the pasta dishes. My parents usually go for the fish of the day or the mussels with linguine. We usually share fried zucchini or white pizza as an appetizer. The price is right, the atmosphere is casual, the service is friendly, and the food is reliably good.

Amalfi's has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I've actually only been going to Amalfi's for the past couple years. This has been a favorite restaurant of my fiance's parents and both sets of their parents, so we find ourselves coming here for all sorts of family occasions. I get giddy inside everytime. Amalfi's is one of those classic, family owned Italian restaurants. The restaurant is located in a more industrial neighborhood in Rockville and can be hard for some to find. The inside is fairly large yet retains a nice warm cozy atmosphere. The service staff has been around for a while (longer then I've been going there for sure) and usually know everybody in my party. When we visit Amalfi's they KNOW that grandpops likes a STIFF vodka tonic :-). The menu features all the classic Italian dishes that everyone loves. We always start with a carafe of red wine (PINOT!) and white pizza with fresh garlic on the side (this should be a must!). We then order after the appetizers are finished. I usually get a veal saltimbocca although sometimes, if I'm feeling saucy, I'll get the Zuppa Di Pesce. The saltimbocca is always tip top, served with two veal cutlets topped with prosciutto and served with your choice of pasta (my go to is angel hair). The Zuppa Di pesce is always tip top and can be served with your choice of pasta and either tomato or garlic sauce. Finally, we always finish the meal with dessert. I love the cannoli and demand that the table gets two so I can eat one and a half :-). I've also been known, from time to time, to chase down the cannoli with a nice warm sambuca. Bottom line. I love going to Amalfi's not just for the food but to be with and spend time catching up with family. This is the type of place where you clear two hours of the day, order wine, enjoy great food, and tell the same stories that everyone loves to here. It's a place to eat, drink, and be with family. I love Amalfi's.

Amalfi is a pretty small establishment, tucked away in a corner in Rockville. Even though the place was fairly empty for lunch time, seating felt cramped. Our party of 9 was squished into one round corner table meant to seat 6 or 7. With our shoulders/elbows touching, and the tea lights casting a warm glow over the silverware, it was definitely a cozy, romantic work lunch -- nothing like almost sitting in your teammate's lap through a meal to quickly get a group bonded. Mmmm, bread. This place has awesome bread baskets. Warm slices that are soft and chewy on the inside, perfectly crusty on the on the outside (no broken teeth here!). I wish the bread came with olive oil or herb butter -- the generic pre-packaged butter didn't do it justice. Still, I think I managed to gulp down 4 slices before I had to move the basket away from myself. The actual food was pretty hit or miss, and the portions are definitely smaller than in other Italian restaurants. My chicken caesar salad was decent, but the chicken was breaded rather than grilled, the croutons were soggy, and the cooks used parmesan powder instead of the usual thin shavings of cheese. Bryan's lasagna was noticeably burnt in one corner -- didn't slow him down much, but still. On the other hand, Karen's tortellini with mushrooms and cream sauce was super tasty, and the people who ordered white and red pizzas made quick work of the pies. +4 for the awesome bread (which we doggy bagged), -1 for uneven food quality

Oh, I love this place! I sampled two of their dishes when I went with fellow yelper Jen C. ;) and I wished I had ordered them. But what I ordered was pretty damn tasty as well. I'm not up on Italian cuisine at all, so I was a little less adventurous and ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca. Oh, it was so fresh and delicious. We ordered a bottle of Luna Di Luna and had us a good ol' time. It was totally intimate and comforting. This place is definitely worth venturing into the "sketchy" neck of the woods. I keed! It may be slightly harder to find for some, but we had no trouble at all. I'm a fan of Amalfi's!

Utterly passable Italian with no frills. Bread is third rate, food is second rate. Has the advantage of not being too expensive, but the portion sizes are small for Italian and the flavors are mediocre, uninspiring. Absolutely nothing special; cheaper than Il Pizzico. I'd rather split a dish at Mamma Lucia's. And that's saying something.

Amalfi has the best lasagna in the suburbs, without a doubt. It's perfect: cheesy, bubbly and seasoned just right. The service is wonderful and they have a nice wine selection. Don't forget to save room for dessert, you'll want to get the cannoli. Really.

LOVE Amalfi's. I've been going here for the past 25 years and it's always delicious. The staff is wonderful -- friendly, helpful, and great service. My staple dish here is the lasagna. It's gooey, cheesy, filled with meat and tender pasta and just overall awesome. Hubby loves the veal picatta and other favorites also include Linguine with Clams and Eggplant Parm. The white pizza with cheese is a MUST HAVE. Seriously, you won't be disappointed. It's garlicky and cheesy and exactly the way a white pizza should be. This is definitely a "destination dining experience," meaning that it's not in a walk-by location, nor is it easy to find. It's tucked away in the industrial part of Rockville, right off the pike. Prices are just right, atmosphere is homey and not overdone, and the food is always top notch.

I was definitely expecting more based on these reviews and was sorely disappointed. The food here is no better than the Olive Garden (which is NOT a compliment). This is a hidden gem in Rockville, tucked into an industrial area. Hidden far too long, too ... it's fantastic! Some of the best (and most authentic) Italian food I've ever had. Just had their Tuscany Ribeye - wow. Try their strawberry lemonaide, too. White pizza (get it as an appetizer) is to die for. Anything you get will be amazing.

I had a 3-3.5 star experience, my wife gave it a 1. Most everything has potential to be really good, but falls short on the home stretch. I had the seafood platter in garlic sauce. Nice, but missing....um...oh yeah! Salt. Wife had the soft shell crabs. Very delightful, but oily. I gave 3 stars because the staff was really friendly. Forgetful, but friendly. It was a nice try. Love the industrial park locale ;)! Almost-Yum!

The Good: My mother's lamb shanks came out beautifully, and the accompanying pasta was also flavorful and well done. Bread was nice and soft, service was fairly speedy for the most part. Tomato&Mozzarella appetizer was fresh if not bland... but it's pretty hard to mess up a Caprese! Our friends ordered the Shrimp Parmigiana which was pretty good (except the pasta), and another ordered the seafood pasta dish which was delicious. The Bad: I ordered the Veal Parmigiana, and the veal was okay, nothing to write home about. My real problem was my pasta... It was supposed to be a meat sauce over spaghetti noodles. Not only was the meat nowhere to be found, but the noodles were abysmally dry! And it was such a small helping of pasta that it was ridiculous how little sauce was on it. The mussels in the wine sauce were passable... the sauce was so bland you really couldn't taste any of the wine or the usual garlicky-lemony-sop-up-every-last-drop-with-bread goodness. The Ugly: Oh gosh, the decor. Okay fine, it's not that bad. Definitely more of a family establishment... It made me think of my grandparents. Date, no. Dinner with friends, probably not. Family, maybe... If they clean up their act and make a decent spaghetti with meat sauce!

3.5 stars. My boss introduced me to this spot when we couldn't get a table at Addie's for lunch. After eating here, I was addicted for several weeks to their eggplant parmagiana, I mean it was bad (the addiction) cause eggplant parm ain't exactly the healthiest dish. The restaurant has a dark, cavernous, feel to it and while I'm generally a one dish gal and always order the same thing, I can say that everytime I go there it is quite busy and it's not a spot that would get walk-by/drive by traffic due to its location in a somewhat industrial looking part of Rockville, so that tells me everyone eating there made it a destination.

anyone who gives this place 4 stars or better must be kidding. I'd give it 2.5. round up maybe for the friendly service and cliched but nice US/Italian old school atmosphere. the pasta is strictly average. the meats maybe even slightly below average. it's nice to have an alternative to places like maggianos, but this place is strictly average.

reading the reviews makes me think i must've missed something. we tried out some pizza and pasta with some homemade soup. the soup was decent, but the pasta and pizza weren't that great. the price isn't too bad so maybe we'll give it another shot sometime...

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
