The chicken and cheese is amazing. The staff behind the counter is super friendly. The cash only thing is strange in 2015. The reason for the 3 stars and not the 4 I want to give is, the owner is so surly it is not only irratating its confusing. You own a place that I'm sure does well, the food is pretty delicious, and you seem to have a decent staff. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar right?

If you like food this place is the shit there subs are double size so this means a large is literally 24 inches on K-Town heaven. And the price is super cheap for the super expensive DMV

GEM OF A PIZZA DELI IN TACOMA MD - - I do not need a white aprons waiter crumbing my table with one of those "table Zambonis" to make me happy. Consistent food quality and service experience make the difference for me at Continental. As most other reviewers noted, it is a small community shop, serving a menu of pizza/deli items. All of the items that cross the counter (not wrapped in foil) look and smell yummy. My favorite, I think, is the best steak and cheese sub South of Philadelphia. The pizza is good, but, I confess, that when given the option to select my meal, I always choose the steak and cheese sub. So, my review is myopic to the Steak and Cheese Sub. Only one location I am aware of. Cash only (AM convenient in neighboring fuel station). Limited in-store seating, I am usually prepared to take away and/or sup in the car.

My husband nitride me here about a year ago or more and I love this place sooo good!!! It's only cash but it's cheap and good!!!! There steak and cheese are so good and fries really really good. Haven't tried there pizza but I'm very sure it's good love this place and I recommend this place !!!! I wish they had more location or closer one to me!!!!

Cash only place so keep that in mind. You can never go wrong with delicious, greasy square-cut pizzas! Plenty of parking behind the building (next to hardware city) however, very limited seats / tables inside so it is best to call in and pick up order. This place tends to get real busy during lunch time!

Perhaps the best place in the DMV for a very reasonably priced, large-portion cheesesteak sandwich. They've been serving these up in Kensington for many years, and the place is usually packed (although the relatively new Chipotle around the corner has been sucking up some of their business). I prefer to call in my order for takeout, as tables in this tiny place can be hard to come by on busy times of the day. WIth that said, the cheesesteak is perfection with lots of geek, caramelized onions, melty provolone and lettuce & tomato (hot peppers if you want 'em). Highly recommend!

Had their small steak and cheese sub. But it was gigantic. My boyfriend didn't know that their large was actually two whole subs(cause he didn't read) so it was pretty funny to see the look on his face. Cheap delicious food :)

The manager was really polite and kind. He apologized and I felt my business mattered. Incredible cheese steaks and pizza. I stand by my previous review. This place is worth it and remember cash only.

It's a small shop. Not sure why anyone would go there to grab one of the small tables and eat in the store. We got a carry out pizza because husband was going to get a haircut in the general location (and wow, a bottle of single barrel bourbon somehow found its way into his shopping cart in the local liquor store while he was picking up some adult beverages. Amazing!). The pizza was decent, a square crust, a little bready. I don't think we'd go out of our way to get pizza again. Other pizza places closer to us with better pizza. Can't comment on subs since we didn't try one.

Went there again. Happy to see that staff has totally changed. Best subs and pizza in the area.

  • Mike C.

Today was the first day I had been here in years. Not because I didn't like it but because my job moved to a place further away. But it's just like coming home in this place. It has a very cozy, yet small, feel to it. The food is reasonable and employees are very nice. And of course it's delicious. I had the steak and cheese, fries and a drink. I got the small steak and cheese because a full steak and cheese is actually the size of two subs. I'll definitely be going back. Make sure to bring cash, though, because it's all they take.

Continental's pizza is truly fantastic. Delish, crispy crust w lots of gooey cheese. The sauce is rich w a nice consistency - not thin & bland like so many are. My daughter sticks w the cheese but I like sausage & peppers on my pie. The cheesesteaks are outstanding! Fattylicious may I say. The chicken cheesesteak has chunks of white chicken meat grilled to perfection. No chicken steakums here folks - it's the real deal for a reasonable price so I don't really mind that they only take cash. I would call ahead to avoid the wait.

    (4)
  • Mosart R.

The cheese steaks are so bland here they need more spices! Add Sazon or adobo into it!, It was like biting into a placebo sandwich it had no taste what so ever if you really really want a good cheese steak and don't want to drive all the way to wack ass philly then I suggest you go to golden china it's right off old Columbia pile behind the Exxon they have the best philly cheese steaks trust me!

Long time customer! I've been ordering pizza from Continental since I was in middle school. It's a small little pizza place in Kensignton.... there are about 8 tables so the seating is limited. The pizza is the best in town hands down!! Hardly a Con: -no outdoor seating -your wait can be long if its dinner time -cash only

    (5)
  • Sujit B.

Hmm, what can I say about this place? ITS SOOO GOOD. Its cash only but i don't think that's a big deal because the food is worth going to an atm for. I always get the large green pepper, onions, extra cheese, and sometimes olives. They have reduced the size of their drinks, but i guess they have to make more money somehow, but either way the total is always under 16 bucks. Always fresh tasting and lots of flavor. Definitely recommend this place.

  • Eric T.

Love there pizza and subs r so tasty and prices are so reasonable and this place is cash only i useally get my order to go. There dine in is small place to sit and eat.

My dad has been going here since he was in highschool, and he still does. Now I have been going there since I was a baby. Great food, great people, very neighborhood-ish and not chainy.

  • Phi N.

Sticking with my rating system, I am giving this place 3 stars (3 = I'd come back if someone else wanted to get it. Not something I crave though). I've been here once before, always going with subs. This time I chose the cheesesteak and added bacon. It was pretty good. Their red peppers aren't very tangy like the ones I like.

  • Rafael S.

Very small shop with very high quality food. I've been going to continental pizza for a couple years now and I don't have a single complaint. The prices are fair, the food is great, customer service is great, wait time is minimal and the store is very nice but small. They've never gotten my order wrong and I've never had a problem with an employee. Overall, it's just a great place to go with the family and eat some pizza and fries or subs.

    (5)
  • L L.

Simple, classic pizza, priced right. We love this for a quick weeknight dinner and it is consistently good. The staff is friendly and there is never a long wait even though it is busy every single time I go. Highly recommend!

  • Rakesh M.

GREAT PIZZA....the quality of the ingredients makes this pizza simply amazing. I got the cheese pizza with extra cheese and kept it simple. When ingredients are fresh, no toppings are required because you learn to truly appreciate the base core of the pizza...great crust, sauce and cheese. ALSO, the feta cheese they use on their chicken souvlaki is one of the best I've ever had.

    (5)
  • Laura O.

This has been my family's pizza (and subs, souvlaki, fries) place for my whole life. Now that I live out of town whenever I come home it's the first thing I want. Ask for fries crispy with extra old bay. Can't go wrong with any choice you make!

Came here a few days ago and I must say the pizza is yummy. The right amount of everything. Friendly customer service, May be my new pizza spot

Continental used to be a regular treat for me, back when I lived a couple of blocks away. Now that I live in DC, I try to run as many errands as possible in Kensington to find an excuse for Continental. This place is quick. Pick-up orders are ready in 10 mins off-peak or 15-20 mins during peak hours. It's cash only, but that shouldn't be a big issue for many, since the prices are so reasonable. I have only tried the pizza, my go-to order is a large cheese with green peppers (which is just under $10). It feeds me for 2-3 meals, which is great bang for buck. I could rave on for paragraphs about how much I love this family-owned Kensington staple, but just take my word for it now. It's great pizza. Oh, and the pizzas are square, by the way.

    (5)
  • A B.

I just don't get the draw here. Must be local-yocal folklore and happy childhood memories. The cash only thing is a total pain. Food quality is mediocre. Nothing special. Prices standard for the area. Lots of better choices, like Manny's across the street.

    (2)
  • N B.

This is a great take out restaurant and staple of Kensington. Amazing and cheap pizzas, their french fries are fabuloux and the steak and cheese subs are so addicting. PRICES ARE AMAZING! Call in your order and it will be ready in 15 minutes. Love love love!

  • David N.

For those that think it's OK for pizza to be cooked on a conveyer belt or that steak can be cooked in a warm liquid bath, or it's acceptable to have food come out of a caulk gun, do yourself a flavor and find a place like this. Continental Pizza is a traditional pizzeria and sub shop. For under $10, you get a great meal that actually tastes. While I have no idea if the cheesesteak is best in the area, it was very good. And how can you go wrong with Old Bay fries? Keep up the good work!

    (4)
  • Stephen B.

Really a 3 star rating, but I am trying to make up for all of the unwarranted 5 stars. Locally owned and operated the staff and family are friendly. The food is prepared well and served hot. But in the end if you are eating a steak and cheese, you are eating pink slime. How can steakum meat get 4 or 5 stars? I understand the sentimental pull to this place as it brings back memories of many a childhood. But let's be honest to ourselves about what exactly we are eating and know that the food itself alone is nothing special.

I was over my neighbor's house for drinks and we started talking about pizza. I hadn't eaten yet and started craving pizza and Continental Pizza came up as a recommendation. I ordered a large pizza pie, which is square. I went to pick it up at little after 8:30 and the doors were locked. Luckily I was persistent and they opened the doors and I was able to pick up my pie. I've been past this place a zillion times considering I go to the Chipotle a few doors down all of the time. The pizza is certainly not the best that I've had and doesn't come close to pizza that I grew up on in the northeast but in a pinch I'd go again. It has a good taste. The crust seems like an already prepared crust...more like bread than real pizza dough. Again, I'd go again if I had a taste for pizza and wanted some place very close. Very limited menu.

Have been coming for 5 years and their subs are delicious. Pizza is also great- highly recommend both!

    (5)
  • David C.

As a fan of thin crust (Not to say deep dish is unwelcomed occasionally by any means) this pizza is a bit dough-y for my tastes. Toppings can be a hair scarce as well. That being said, ~$8.00 for a pizza for two is not bad. It sure beats the PapaDom Huts out there. Bring cash though as they do not take credit cards.

    (3)
  • Jon S.

The Steak and Cheese is honestly the best I've ever had and I compare every other steak and cheese to theirs. Which to be honest, is completely unfair, since you can't beat perfection. The first time I ate here was about 12 years ago and no matter how long it's been since I've been back, it still amazes me. Great food and great service for an extremely cheap price for all the food you get!

    (5)
  • Kevin D.

Among the best steak and cheeses we've ever had. Though they offer a wide variety of sandwiches/subs from their menu, but I always resort to my "go-to" with the steak and cheese w/everything on it. Their small sandwiches are a single 8" sub, while their larges are basically two of their smalls (i.e. two 8" subs) so be warned that a large is actually enough for 2 people. While their subs are great, their pizzas are sub-par and their fries are typically soggy and old (looks like they simply re-fry the fries that have been sitting for a while). So I'd avoid those. If you want to switch things up, I'd also recommend trying the Chicken Souvlaki too!

    (4)
  • J D.

Best pizza in town. Always hot and fresh. We always get the Continental Special...delicious. Wish they delibered and took credit cards.

    (5)
  • Roberto D.

Been there twice. The food is great for where you are on the go. However they only accept cash. I didn't know any restaurant that did not accept cards until I saw this one. Had to walk 1 block to the ATM and pay $4.50 in total atm fees. For the future GET A CREDIT CARD MACHINE. NOW THEY HAVE READERS THAT ARE FREE!

Yes, I'm giving this Ledo-style pizza joint five stars; it is as good as all the hype you'll read in the numerous reviews posted here. First of all, this place is an institution in this corner of Montgomery County. It's been 15 years since I was here last and it is as good now as it was back then. At 6:15 on a Friday night the line was out the door to get food! Most people were doing carryout, and the smart ones called ahead. This place is tiny! The bakery next door closed and it would be great if they expanded, but many shops next door have come and gone and Continental never saw the need to expand. I guess they know better than me, because whatever they are doing is working for them. We snagged a table easily, since turnover is quick with people ordering pizza or subs. The pizza is one of the best if you like it greasy and cheesy. We didn't get the square; instead we got a small round (which is 8 pc) extra cheese and mushroom pizza, and boy, was it cheesy! The sauce is sweet, which I liked. I was so stuffed after three slices, but managed to down my fourth slice. The pizza and a large coke came to just $9.00! Talk about a cheap date! Cash only! Plenty of parking in back,

Love their pizza - but won't go because it's cash only. It's 2014 people... How hard is it to get one of those Square thingies for an iphone? All the food trucks have them and I imagine Continental does better business than most of them...one day they will have to enter the 21st century.

I can't get enough of this place. I usually order about two or three times a week. I have never ever ever been let down with service or my order. I keep coming back here for a reason. Food is amazing! Price is well under what you would pay elsewhere with similar food. Happy Customer since like what 15years ago. Will continue to keep coming here, every time I get a chance. Thanks Guys,

  • S G.

i've had the meatball sub and the pizza. both were average. i think Ledos does a better pizza. I think the sub could be better if on better bread. the meatballs themselves were pretty tasty too. oh and Cash only, FYI!

A great pizza and sub shop! I could eat there everyday.

    (5)
  • Brutus M.

The pizza is completely disgusting. It is dough with cheese, it has no sauce. I'd imagine the people here complimenting the pizza are paid shills because its the worst pizza I've ever had. The restaurant does well because its the only pizzeria in Kensington, you'd have to drive at least 10 minutes either way to get another pizza. It thrives because high school kids without cars would have to walk half an hour further to get pizza elsewhere. Only plus side is the service is decent and polite but they really skimp on the ingredients and quality, might as well buy a frozen one from the supermarket.

    (1)
  • Electric B.

This is a nice pizza place. Whenever we set up an order for parties and stuff, we got what we ordered. The service was good, they know what we want and there's no screw ups. Pizza was pretty good for the price. I recommend going here for events like parties, birthdays, etc.

A long standing staple in the Kensington community, this "almost hole in the wall" joint, delivers greats subs and pizza. Pizza: The Continental Special is highly recommended, all toppings extremely free and never from a can. Subs: Cheeseteak is one of the better ones around. The large is so big it comes on two plates so come hungry. The cash only option also keeps the prices low so swing by and get touaf some good food at a good price.

Went here today for the first time because I wanted some mom and pop style pizza joint food. I got the chicken and cheese with everything (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers) and some fries. There was a little bit of a wait (maybe 15 min) because they were packed for the lunch hour, just shows they must be doing something right. Seating was limited so I took it to go. The food was great and not too greasy. I liked that the chicken was cut up grilled chicken instead of shredded. Next time I'll try the steak and cheese.

    (4)
  • Jamie A.

Just tried their steak and cheese. This sub was the worst I've had in the dmv area. Poorly made, the thinnest layer of meat I've ever seen on a sub. If your looking for a sub filled with lettuce, tomato, and whatever other vegetable you ask for then go for it. But if your looking for a sub that actually tastes good, go somewhere else!

    (1)
  • Jessica P.

Continental is a staple in the town of Kensington. Call your order in ahead of time if you would rather not wait- there is almost always a line (and they will always tell you "15 minutes" to pick up- and frankly that is pretty much always true!). Their pizza is great- we like good ol' fashioned pepperoni- but the true star is their chicken souvlaki! It is great on a pita or sub roll- the chicken is tender, juicy, and oh so flavorful. The toppings (lettuce, tomato, feta, and tzatziki) make it even better. Do not forget to add on an order of french fries (the seasoning...yes.) Continental is a fast casual place with great food- don't go in expecting fine dining service, they are trying to run a quick operation here- and they are succeeding. Also, they only take cash, no credit cards here!

I have been coming here since I was able to pick up the phone to order the best pizza in town. Tucked away in a little strip mall that has long since been renovated, don't shy away from some of the best subs and pizza you can get. There's something for everyone so come hungry and prepared with cash. Don't go next door to chipotle. Bring a friend, or two, to wait with you or if you're getting a sub, eat there while it's hot! I love the mom & pop feel of this place. Support your local businesses and go to places like continental.

    (4)
  • Walter M.

With respect to their fries and pizza, the sandwiches are at least as good as what you find in your mall's food court or sit downs. You REALLY get your money's worth. Beware, they only take cash and check their hours; they're not open all day or you 10pm-10pm place.

    (4)
  • April M.

Five stars because it's an absolute classic in this area. If your not from here than this is the place to go if you want great comfort pizza, amazing subs and no fancy gimmicks. They have been a staple in Kensington for such a long time and the food is always what I expect when I walk in. The pizza is large enough to share but I never want to as soon as I open up the box and see the amazing lightly blistered cheese.... Can you tell I'm drooling yet? Can't even go into how great their steak and cheese is... Just get it with the mushrooms, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and enjoy heaven.

This place is fine. Giving it 2 stars because it is overrated here on Yelp. I was attending some community theater nearby and came to this restaurant because it was so highly rated, and was very disappointed... not because the food was bad (it was fine), but because its rating was so high but it was entirely unremarkable. Do not expect to be blown away, as these other reviews would have you believe.

  • Jason R.

After several local guys recommended Continental (the best in K-Town!) I gave it a try. After standing in a pointless line to be shouted at by rude counter help I got a decent pizza. But decent is relative, and saying Continental is good is like the parable about the one-eyed-man in the land of the blind. Prices are fine, pizza is decent, I had the supreme. Crust was awful, more like a biscuit than a pizza crusts should be.

  • Natasha S.

I tried this place for the first time when my boss who had been coming here for many, many years brought me here to order some lunch. I couldn't decide between a pizza or a steak and cheese sub. I decided to get the steak and cheese, and although it WAS fresh I didn't like it as much as I had hoped to. I must agree that the prices are pretty decent, however I will have to return and give the pizza a try to finalize my ultimate decision. This rating is based primarily on the sub and fries I had. Otherwise, the place was extremely busy and it seemed to be a well loved staple in this neighborhood.

Remember the Seinfeld episode featuring the "soup nazi?" Continential is kind of like that-- a hole in the wall right on Conn. Ave., About 10 yrs ago, I was standing in line when someone tried to cut to the front to order and was told, "no pizza for you!" There's something about the pizza--it's not the best I've had by a long shot, but sometimes you just gotta have it. Relatively cheap (but more than it used to be), it has minimal sauce and really good cheese. Overall, small, rude staff, packed most evenings, average food, and we love it. When the kids come home from college, they frequently stop at Continental's on the way. It's the smell of downtown Kensington.

Nothing beats comfort food after a long, hard day...except for fresh AND cheap comfort food that makes your taste buds want to say "heeeeey!" I just walked right in and asked for a small turkey sub with a side of fries. Five minutes later, I am presented with a white bag with mammoth sub inside! I guess by "small" they meant "rather large" because the "small" sub here is a strong 8-incher!! So I begin to chow down when I reach for my piping hot, crisp, fat fries...dusted in OLD BAY SEASONING?! SCHA-WING! And you know since I'm from "Muurrrryland" ... I love that Old Bay Seasoning!! I'm feelin' it - the fries, the sub, the freshness, the service, the price(just under $8)!

Cash only, sadly. Looks dated, they still use physical time cards. The food was mediocre at best; the pizza tasted more like grease than pepperoni.

I been going here for years. The cheeseburger sub with the works and the special pizza is what I get every time. Food is great. Cash only.... call ahead. Love this place. You will be surprised at cost and what a large sub size is. It is the two times longer than what other places calls a large.

Simple, classic pizza, priced right. We love this for a quick weeknight dinner and it is consistently good. The staff is friendly and there is never a long wait even though it is busy every single time I go. Highly recommend!

  • Laura O.

This has been my family's pizza (and subs, souvlaki, fries) place for my whole life. Now that I live out of town whenever I come home it's the first thing I want. Ask for fries crispy with extra old bay. Can't go wrong with any choice you make!

  • A B.

I just don't get the draw here. Must be local-yocal folklore and happy childhood memories. The cash only thing is a total pain. Food quality is mediocre. Nothing special. Prices standard for the area. Lots of better choices, like Manny's across the street.

  • N B.

This is a great take out restaurant and staple of Kensington. Amazing and cheap pizzas, their french fries are fabuloux and the steak and cheese subs are so addicting. PRICES ARE AMAZING! Call in your order and it will be ready in 15 minutes. Love love love!

I used to frequent this place quite a bit in high school, but it had been a while since I'd been back and admittedly never for dinner. It would've been much better to call in as most people do and there are a ton of take out orders. I would definitely not recommend ordering in person, even if eating there, as the food will take a while given all of the carry out orders. I ordered the pizza, which is good given the price, but otherwise only ok. The crust is really more like a dense bread, almost like a thin ciabata, than a normal pizza crust. I remember the subs and fries being better than the pizza I had, but I didn't try them on this last visit, so I can't comment. I'd give this place 3 stars if it wasn't for the price, besides I like a decent cheap, no frills sandwich shop, not to mention the sentimental heart renderings.

Really not sure what the hype is all about but I'm guessing it's the lack of options in this area. To their credit, the food was made fast and the people behind the counter were friendly. On to the part that matters most. The pizza tasted like something out of an elementary school cafeteria. The steak and cheese I tasted was forgettable, mostly bread and lacking flavor. The fries were the best part of the meal, which doesn't say much, since it's hard to go wrong with french fries. The old bay seasoning was a nice touch though. To summarize, I was sadly underwhelmed by my first (and likely last) Continental Pizza experience.

Best Cheap Cheese pizza ever! There steak and cheese is soo yummy!

  • Pete D.

Cheap eats alert! In the area? Make sure you come by here and grab an 8" cheesesteak for just over $5. I've known about this spot for years and every time I stop by, it's the exact same delicious cheesesteak each time. Piled on a soft loaf of bread with mushrooms, cooked onions, thinly sliced beef and topped with provolone. Now those looking for whiz with, get out of here, this is not your spot. I honestly have never had the pizza or cold cuts here as many times as I've been here. The place isn't your largest spot, has about 15-20 chairs and is CASH ONLY. Also it gets really busy during lunch hours, so make sure you call your order in while driving and have a break from texting and driving. Oh and parking stinks too.

I love continentals. Dad has taken me alot and I enjoy every bit. 8.50 for a 16-inch steak and cheese. There specialty pizza is also very good. Feeds 2-3 people. Great people. And overall, amazing subs. NO ONE has beat them yet. I will always be back. Keep it up

Tasty sandwiches. Had steak n cheese - look forward to trying the souvlaki. Small place so often crowded. Our "8-inch" "small" subs were delivered as 2 6-inch halves. ;-)

As a customer since 1986, I keep going back for cheap, delicious pizza, fries, and steak and cheese subs! This restaurant is cheaper than a meal at McDonald's and a thousand times better. The owner has been there for decades. I love this place! I highly recommend for fast, affordable and great food!

I was late to this party. Although I grew up in Kensington, I have only been going to Continental since my college summer days. I do love the pizza, but that is not the strength of the place. The pizza is very inexpensive, and has a great cheese taste. It has always been a little too greasy for me and could stand to have a little more tomato sauce. You cannot beat the pizza for the price though. The french fries with Old Bay seasoning, and the cheeseburger subs have always been great. However, what makes this place great are the Steak N Cheese subs and the Italian Cold Cut subs. The Steak N Cheese are not Philly Cheesesteaks as they come best with LTM, mushrooms, and hot peppers. The Italian Cold Cuts come with a little oil, raw onions, mayo, and hot peppers. If you love sandwiches and a good deal you will be hooked. Continental has started to cut a few corners over the years with their napkins, and ketchup packages, but their food quality remains excellent. It will be interesting to see how they coexist with the new Chipotle opening around the corner. If you grew up and love Continental Pizza join the unofficial Facebook group: I am a K-Town KId and I love Continental Pizza!

This place is awesome. It's been around forever, and I can remember being a regular customer since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. I grew up in Wheaton, and this was always the go-to place for a cheap dinner any night of the week. I've been ordering the Steak & Cheese with hot peppers (no onions) for years. It always hits the spot. My only complaint is that they don't take credit cards, but there's an ATM in that 7-11 in the same shopping center, so that's convenient. Staff is laid-back and cool. Easily the best Pizza/sub joint in the area.

    (5)
  • John T.

My favorite sub place around. A "large" sub is literally two whole subs, each cut in two. Don't order one just for yourself... it's easily a meal for two. I'm amazed by some of the reviews. I guess some people don't like that style of sub. If you get one and don't like it... you probably shouldn't order another. Their quality is consistent. They use Old Bay on thd fries, which I like. Closed on Sundays :( The only sub place I liked better was the old Sligo Deli in Silver Spring. Sadly, the family sold it and it went downhill fast and closed.

  • Roger C.

This is not your "cheese in the crust" "arugula and bleu cheese topped" type of pizza place. This is a pure pizza joint. It faces a major street with parking around the side, it has only a handful of tables if you choose to eat in, it has a line that goes out the door, and the decor consists of a couple random pictures and a clinging ivy plant that has taken over the entire length of the ceiling molding (that plant must be as old as the store). Most importantly, it is $8.00 large square pizza with simple ingredients that make you remember what pizza was like before it was driven up to your front door in 30 minutes or less. It is not just the dough, tomato sauce, cheese, or toppings. It is how everything works well together. I would rather have this modestly price pie than any other within a 20 minute radius. A couple notes... Call before going. The wait can be long. And this is a cash only place.

  • Niket R.

I came here a couple months ago with my roommate, but for some reason neglected to write a review; I'm now pushing my ennui aside and writing a review for this kick-ass joint! First off, don't come here expecting New York-style pizza, Chicago-style deep dish, or Chicago-style thin crust pizza; for if you do so, you'll be disappointed. If anything, the pizza at Continental Pizza is similar to St. Louis-style pizza. It seems like they use cheeses other than mozzarella, but don't quote me on it! I really like they're pizza; it's uber greasy and amazingly tasty. I personally think Continental does a better job of this style of pizza than does Ledo Pizza. Their small pizza is circular, but their medium and large pizzas are rectangular. Now for the cheesesteaks....one of the best in the DC area, save for South Street Steaks in Bethesda (and formerly in College Park). The sandwich drips in a oil and is delicious. However, I'm not sure how it compares to Pat's, Geno's or any of the other famous cheesteak joints in Philly. Their fries are pretty good and they're served with Old Bay. With their large subs at 16 inches in length, and their pizza priced at 8 bucks for a large, you can't go wrong with Continental Pizza!

  • Jane Y.

People love this place because of sentimental reasons. It has been the staple pizzeria in kensington for AGES. People come here because it reminds them of childhood. I don't blame them. I didn't grow up in Kensington. I've lived in Kensington for 7 years. I come here for the food, and honest be told, the food wasn't ALL THAT. It's cheap though. VERY PRETTY CHEAP. A double 8 inch steak-ums and cheese for less than 7 bux? You can't beat that. That's right, Steak-ums. It's not cut up philly steak&cheese. The pizza crust was crispy but too thick to be that delicious thin crispy kind. They were a bit stingy on the toppings, so overall, it was a bit too dry for me. The fries were good though.

    (2)
  • Len S.

I agree the food is pretty cheap and fresh, but that is where the happy face ends. *Cash only *The drink selection stinks - Sprite, Coke, pink lemonade, and something else blahhh I ordered the Italian cold cut and got hardly any meat, just a few cuts of salami, lettuce, a few small slices of tomato, and no oil; which overall amounted to almost zero flavor. The fries - had hardly any Old Bay on them and had no discernible flavor otherwise. If you want fresh tasteless food on the cheap, this is the place for you. I am not sure about the pizza, but judging from the subs lack of creativity, I'm not dying to go back anytime soon.

    (2)
  • Remy M.

The cheesesteaks are amazing. They might be the best in the DC area. And what's better is that their large cheesesteak is just two regular size cheesesteaks. I love it. I think they close early on Sundays, though...I recall stopping by in the afternoon once and they were closed. Worth checking out if you're in the area!

    (5)
  • Billy S.

Continental's is a sentimental favorite of mine. My favorite items: pizza, fries, and their steak sandwiches. First, their fries--I love their crispiness and the salt/old bay/spice mixture they put on...its pure magic! Next, their pizza--I love their crust...especially if you ask them to make it extra crispy. For a small price, you get a great pizza. It is a little bit greasy, but darn...it is money! Finally, their sandwiches are large and cheap! They make them quick...this place is crowded during lunch and their isn't much table space to eat, but Continental's is one of my favorite places...

    (4)
  • Heather Y.

Love the cheese steaks! Yes, they are probably steakums. But they are steakums with fresh cheese (provolone unless you ask for American) perfectly grilled caramelized onions, mushrooms, fresh shredded lettuce, ripe tomatoes, little flecks of hot pepper and a stripe of mayo. Order a large cheese steak with everything - you'll have enough to feed two very hungry people for 8 bucks. A large is two 9-inch steak subs. A regular is one 9-incher. You can call in advance and have your food waiting in about 10 minutes. If you call and the phone is busy, it's because they are too crowded and don't have time to answer. They don't take credit cards, parking is around the corner of the plaza and there's no ambiance or beer. They are closed on Sunday. Don't let these things stop you.

    (4)
  • Brendan D.

Pretty damn good food. As others have mentioned, the prices are very reasonable. A large pizza with 2 toppings was 9 bucks! No that was not a typo. They are made on a tray, and look a bit like Ledo's though the taste is different. Size wise a large pizza is enough for 1 guy and a girl, or maybe one regular size guy, and one little dude, or maybe a man and a kid, or maybe a big girl and a smal girl. Ok you get the picture here quantity wise, 1 large was enough for my gf and I. If you are hungry grab some fries (they are good too) to go with it. Subs are good as well, try the italian cold cut, the steak and cheese with onions, and the turkey and cheese. They are a bit heavy handed on the mayo if you do not tell them otherwise. Continental is cash money only, and there is a ATM next door if you need to stop. Check it out- good food and good people...

Best quick local pizza joint. You know it's good when they don't open on Sundays. Also what's better than french fries with old bay?

    (5)
  • Cynthia L.

They are definitely the best steak & cheese around the area! I order them everywhere and haven't found another place that compares. I also LOVE their pizza, but the large seems to be better than the small. That sounds strange, but the crust is different. They're very quick and not prone to making mistakes on orders, which is nice for a change!

Chicken souvlaki is excellent! Order and enjoy!

What's your definition of a "hole in the wall" place? Does being in the heart of Kensington, MD part of that definition? Does residing next to a shady place called Hardware City that's been open for as long as you live while there are Home Depot's and Lowe's conveniently located everywhere else part of that definition? Anyways, their cheesesteaks are pretty good. I remembered them being much better when I was younger. But hey, every time you get a big greasy bag which contains your food, it usually leads to good memories. Be careful when you order a "large" (aka 2 subs instead of 1). But if you're that hungry, have at it. After reading all these reviews, I might have to try their pizza too. Maybe I'll update it with 5 stars after I try their pizza and fries. Cash Only. So swing by the ATM on your way here. 3 stars for taste + 1 extra star for value/quantity.

They raised prices a little too much, had to knock 'em down to 4 stars... still a good deal, just not fantastic.

This place rocks my world. The only thing I look forward to more than seeing Continental Pizza when visitng home is seeing my mother. A small sub = 1 sub, a large = 2 subs.... isn't that smart? And its cheaper than your uncle Vinny ($4.20 for a large pizza when I was growing up). Here's my list of the very best things at Continentals... Everything else is on the best things list 1) Steak and cheese with onions and shrooms 2) Fries 3) Chicken Souvlaki 4) Pizza 5) Cold cuts

When i am in the DC area i always stop by Continental. I have been going here for over 15 years, so my love for their food may be tainted by a tinge of sentimentality. Regardless, the steak and cheese with onions and mushrooms is excellent.

i have been coming here for at lease 45yrs same owners and same great food the great thing about continental is that you can drive through kensington and smell the fried onions that make you hungry. when i first starting going there pizzas were about 2.00 and taste the same now as they did then. what a great resturant

Amazing Steak and Cheese but the pizza is equal to what you find in the frozen food section of the grocer. The owners also seem like it is a chore to serve you. Be happy to take my money -- isn't that why you are in business?

I've been going to Continentals for years and it always delivers! The steak and cheese with everything on it has been my favorite for 20 years. They don't skimp on the meat, the bread is always soft&toppings fresh. The place is tiny so we usually get carry out. On top of it all the prices are amazing too!

  • Mic X.

this is the review of my youth and my present. no matter how time passes by or how many times they upgrade the safeway across the street or put up another starbucks or redo the building that encapsulates the tiny wundersub shop called continental pizza (and subs (as i remember it)) nothing can stop the perfect rectangle pizza cut into little squares for your grease filled taste bud explosion. all for cents on the dollar. they sell the all the usual subs and fries like other places, but theirs always seems cheaper and tastier...... they have been around before i was born (and i'm old) and i am only assuming that they will exist longer than carbon dating. if you are driving through kensington along connecticut ave one day........ do yourself an experience and stop in to continental and enjoy a simple little sub, and then sigh.

  • Earl R.

I like this place. It's a refreshing "old-school" place of an ilk that seems to be disappearing one by one. Go here when you are hungry and don't want to spend a lot of money. A large sub is an old fashioned large, maybe 16"? A small is 8". The pizza isn't for me. It's not bad, just not the type of pizza I like. I see plenty of people walking out with pizzas, so try it, it might be for you. Again, the price is certainly right.

Best value around! Subs and pizza are GREAT! I love their fries (seasoned with Old Bay) too.

Low cost, quick and good - that about sums it up. Call ahead and avoid the wait! The pizza is good and half the price of places. The subs are also great. I gave this 5 stars instead of 4 due to the value of the food. Have I had better pizza and subs? Yes, of course. But nothing comes close at this price.

I first discovered Continental at a high school fundraiser. This is comfort food to me. I love their doughy chewy pizza and their perfectly salted french fries. The cheesesteaks aren't the greatest, but decent enough. I love the tiny, out of the way location and the affordable prices... they make Continental Pizza that much more special.

I've been going here for lunch every once in a while for about 6 years now. Its very consistent and really good. I've had cheesesteak, fries with old bay, pizza and a handful of other items and it never disappoints!. The service is great too. I like everything about this place!

Not a pizza shop, but a Kensington Institution! We go for the pizza: its priced way RIGHT! Its ALWAYS good. Decent texture, not too greasy or wet. It works over & over again. It drives me crazy that I'm in there to buy pizza all the time & have to smell all of the Steak&Cheeses coming out. Next time!

So honestly, Continental isn't the best sub place or pizza place. It's sort of average-- certainly not bad, but not amazing either. But really, the reason you go to Continental is because you've ALWAYS gone to Continental, you always WILL go to Continental, you're most likely going to see someone you know there, and it just makes you feel good. That, and because when you order a large sub they give you two subs, no foolin'

Great food for cheap is the bottom line here. I have had pizza, cheesestakes, meatball sandwiches, and fries here and not once was I disappointed. The prices here are similar to that of a fast food joint and the food never takes more than 10 minutes to come out even when they are slammed. The only drawback is there are very few tables and they are usually full, so takeout is usually the way to go.

The pizzas are cheap and delicious, though they aren't for folks who like thin crust (very doughy). Try the Continental Special. Cash-only is kind of an inconvenience, but I always take a blank check in my wallet if I don't have the cash (they take checks). The pizza is a true crowd pleaser, great for company etc. Not a great place to eat in, I'd recommend takeout instead. It's so small there and there are only a couple of tables. They don't deliver and they are not open on Sundays. But the pizza is better than most.

this place is great. i totally agree with everyones comments HOWEVER for anyone who has had a real cheesesteak these are very very pale in comparison. it is clearly steakems, and they dont even pretend to chop the steakems up. It is infinite more roll then steak. People should know what they are getting when they go. The pizza is awesome. For the price its the best around. Is it the best pizza ever? No. Can you get a large 12 slice (squares), for $7.00 (YES) Fries are good also. If people want a real cheesesteak go over to South Street Steaks in College Park or on Cordell in Bethesda.

Thanks Guys,

i've had the meatball sub and the pizza. both were average. i think Ledos does a better pizza. I think the sub could be better if on better bread. the meatballs themselves were pretty tasty too. oh and Cash only, FYI!

  • Ellce C.

On top of it all the prices are amazing too!

this is the review of my youth and my present. no matter how time passes by or how many times they upgrade the safeway across the street or put up another starbucks or redo the building that encapsulates the tiny wundersub shop called continental pizza (and subs (as i remember it)) nothing can stop the perfect rectangle pizza cut into little squares for your grease filled taste bud explosion. all for cents on the dollar. they sell the all the usual subs and fries like other places, but theirs always seems cheaper and tastier...... they have been around before i was born (and i'm old) and i am only assuming that they will exist longer than carbon dating. if you are driving through kensington along connecticut ave one day........ do yourself an experience and stop in to continental and enjoy a simple little sub, and then sigh.
