GOOD!!! Came here in the summer of 2013 and I will continue supporting. Especially on seafood I am picky but I am satisfied with the product from here.

I use to goto ruff n ready years ago for crab legs and they were always huge and perfect! This past wkend I got Maryland crabs ..small males..They were steamed perfectly and so meaty! And such a reasonable price...Best crab place to goto 100%. They also have shrimp and other seafood platters.

Crabs were great tasting and heavily full of meat. However, when I pay extra for all males I shouldn't be faced with a mixture.

Have lived near Ruff N Resdy for decades, but never stopped in. Just went for the first time and. discovered there's no need to go to Baltimore for crab cakes, when you can get wonderful ones right here. Their spicy shrimp were perfect, too.

Today I ordered 3 fish and chips to go. we were very disappointed with the food. The fries were cold as bricks and the fish didn't have a fresh taste as if it was fried with old grease. Maybe they were having a bad day I don't know I just know the garbage ate my food today. My colleagues fed their food to wild animals outside at work

I have been going to RR for over 20 years, never got a bad crab, never any sand. If you are lucky enough to get their Select Female crabs, you will be sure to return. Love this place and they guys that work Here

I'm not sure if I would write home about this place just yet. DH and I planned with a couple to have a crab feast at a park so Ruff-n-ready immediately came to my mind. Since I wanted to make sure we'll have enough crabs for our feast, I tried calling them. Each time I was greeted with a voicemail. I tried leaving voicemail but I guess they don't check that either. It would have been helpful if they leave what's the market price for the crabs if they won't pick up their phone. Anyway, as it is our first time there, we got confused with the parking lot. It could really help their customers if they invest in paint and mark where people should park. Someone parked on the opposite side of the little lot hence creating mayhem for everyone. Now on to the price and quality of the crabs: We ordered half-bushel of crabs for $65. It was a mix of female and male crabs. What I didn't realize is that they started giving us feeder crabs. In our half-bushel, we probably only got 4 large crabs. It was pathetic. The taste was good. Apparently, they don't serve naked crabs because it'll smell like ammonia or something like that. What I learned from buying from them is that: if I want to ask for a half-bushel, I should ask for only large crabs. Or maybe I should buy a dozen or two of just large or extra-large males.

First let me say that I have been going to this place for years...Initially. .the pros out weighed the cons. PRO..Good size..delicious..seasoned..Hot. CON..Long lines..inconsistency with size and availability.. expensive. My biggest issue is that the last time I was there..the Maryland Crabs were extremely small..but it's okay because it's not quite Crab season...HOWEVER. .I got in line to purchase alaskan crab legs..the guy at the counter is weighing crab legs that are more ICE than crablegs..They are already expensive. ..The people ahead of me are using EBT card so I guess it doesn't matter that they are paying almost 40 dollars for a couple of frozen crablegs..I ..on the other hand..am paying cash and not Ghetto stupid enough to think that it's ok..I complain about the ice..The guy says..this is all we have..he then makes an adjustment to compensate for all of the ice. ..Still expensive. .and I appreciate the adjustments on my behalf..but I can't shake the feeling that others are being robbed blindly..NEEDLESS TO SAY..I am in search of another convenient but fair priced CRABHOUSE..Shame on you Ruff and Ready..

Got crabs from them last night. They had a special going on for light male crabs, 1 dozen for $24. I never knew of light male until yesterday. They were good. We asked to see the crabs before we purchased them. He presented us with crabs that looked really big and perfectly seasoned. Of course when we got home the crabs we got were small and medium sized only. They were delicious but I expected large light male crabs. Will come back though.

It's been some time since I've patronized this place. The number one reason being, PARKING! The side parking lot allows 6 cars max on it. If you're one of the unlucky ones to get a space at the very end, you'll have to acquire some pretty good driving skills, quick, in order to get out. It's always packed unless you go during off-peak crab season. This last visit was quick but the size of the regular crabs were shameful. I don't know if they got a bad batch but they looked pitiful. I got MAYBE 5 nice, decent sized crabs out of a half bushel. The best part was the pricing. For the half bushel I paid $65 which would have been the same price for two dozen regular at $30. Go figure! I only went here because I had a craving for crabs. Will be heading to Mechanicsville in the upcoming weeks for REAL crabs at even better prices! Thompson's Seafood reigns in crabs hands down. Review coming soon!!

I drove over here because I was craving crabs, it is just a take out place and we drove over and needed a place to sit. It looked awesome, dying to come back and get some crabs when we have some place to eat them.

YUM YUM YUM....... These are the meaty crab legs I have ever had in my entire life. They are seasoned just right, the flavor is to die for lol. I've tried the crabs and the crab legs, they are both very fresh, well seasoned and HOT!!!! It gets pretty packed in the summer and when the weather gets just a tid bit warm but the wait is well worth it. Parking sucks, you usually have to park in the chinese takeout parking lot or the business next to that and walk. But again, WELL WORTH IT!!!!

The only thing that coul make this place better is metro accessibility. Hand to God this place is the business and truth. I stopped in on a sweltering Friday and was promptly served. If you are looking for a smile and a hug go elsewhere but if you are looking for delish, high quality food then put your feelings in your pocket and proceed. I ordered 3 ears of their AMAZING sweet corn and a half dozen of their well seasoned meaty males and was nothing but pleased. This will for sure be a summer go to...

I can't reiterate enough times how dearly in love i am with this place. The staffs are always helpful, and prompt. Stopped by one afternoon hoping to get some Selects Female, but they were out. After asking if they had anything larger than medium Male, they made a face and asked me to wait. Don came back to inform me that there is one dozen jumbo available. I swear i wanted to jump for joy on the spot. I caught myself right in time, since this is not the type of neighborhood you'd want to be caught jumping for joy. Walked away with a half of jumbo, and we were happily ever after that night:)

Love this place! Huge crabs, cooked perfectly (not overcooked and dry like Cameron's and the wharf). Definitely my go to crab spot in the DMV.

Tried the shrimp for the first time. They were great - fresh and delicious! I will be trying the crab this weekend......

  • George B.

There was a time I enjoyed Ruff n Ready but we were robed today. First we asked for a half bushel, they told us some mumble jumbo they didn't have any. What! Huh? Um this is a Crab joint right? So we went with their dozen for $30.00 they were supposed to be large, if 3" Crabs are large they need to get into a different line of work. Let me tell everyone that will listen... Never again! they'll show you large crabs before you buy and when you get home you'll be like those Mutha Fuckers got me... bastards! heed my warning! Crooks! Waste of your hard earned money. They must think people haven't bought or ate Crabs before.

  • d w.

I have always been safe going here.... The crabs are some of the best... the Jumbo crabs are expensive , but sweet and meaty :)) The shrimp are good too ...I have been getting my crabs from here for almost 15 years ...

OMG! Very heavy, meaty crabs. Loved them.

  • Donnell F.

Omg they are awesome!! They have a great customer service and they had lot of patience since we are deaf, we written down what we want.. They got it on dot! We planning on coming back there again anytime soon! Seasoning and how they cook their crabs, so freaking delicious!!!

i LOVE this place. like others, i wish it was closer to a train stop, but it's still worth the bus ride. when i go, it's quick & friendly. the neighborhood is cool as well, although, i haven't really done much exploring. the prices are decent too as far as i can remember.

  • Alec B.

When I'm too lazy (and broke) to go to the crab places out on the water, Ruff N Ready is the only place I go to for my crab fix. The prices are great and the crabs and spiced shrimp are excellent. I do wish it was a bit closer or metro accessible, but I won't hold tat against them

  • Shauntey W.

Close to home, never any issues.............

  • Kelly G.

Huge Alaskan Crab legs with old bay and drawn butter yummy. The service is good and fast they cook the Alaskan crab legs to order. The only thing that is missing here is beer. Beer and Crabs with NBA playoffs is an awesome Sunday for me! Parking is pretty bad we usually park at the Chinese takeout next door.

I live across the street from Ruff n Ready, so for all of those commenting on the neighborhood, that's rude. It's not hostile, and it is not unsafe...the crab house sits on the MD/DC border, so what you see is a representation of the ONLY crab house in that area for several miles drawing a plethora of different people from different areas of the city. Aside from the Wharf, and further out places like Columbia, Annapolis, Baltimore, you're not just going to walk up on a crab house that has decent prices and selection. I've lived on Chillum Road for 28 years, so rest assured I've walked and driven past Ruff N Ready daily, and I've never feared for my life, experienced any robbery or theft and I've never seen homeless and raggedy people congregating there. There's 2 gas stations, a West Indian food spot, a car wash, a Chinese carry out, and a hair salon within feet of the crab house, so of course its a very busy intersection.

the first time i heard of ruff n ready, i was confused. mainly by the name because it did nothing to connote the delish steamy crabs that i would soon discover. but once i saw the location, i understood. only a place called ruff n ready would you find the workers located behind steel bars. you go and place your order. you pay them. and you walk out with a paper bag full of steaming crabs. there is no ambience. no place to eat inside. (and don't make eye contact with female customers with face tattoos.. as I did last time... ) the crabs are generally really good: the sweetness of the crab meat is punctuated by the salty/spicy old bay seasoning. there were some misses in the past, but i don't think it is reasonable to expect hits all the time. but when it is a hit, it is sublime. we get the female crabs because we like the roe. the orangey creamy roe is excellent on toast. get a bag of crabs and a 12 pack of beer. that is a wonderful night in the making

Friendly staff, meaty Alaskan king crab legs, but disappointed with the dozen "Female Select" blue crabs that we walked away with. Maybe it was the time of day (we arrived at 6PM), maybe it's the season (mid-November)... but after being promised that "females don't get any bigger than these," I was sorely disappointed when we cracked open crab after crab that had barely any lump crab meat, and shriveled claw meat. I'll be back probably, but next time I'll pick the warmer months and give a less forgiving review if they disappoint me again!

This crab shack isn't in the greatest of neighborhoods - and it's just that.. a crab shack - but it's the best crab shack in Maryland as far as I'm concerned! Wanna know whats currently good? Males or Females? Want heavy meaty crabs? This place is for you. Want ambiance? Stay away.. But all I'm saying is - if you've got a craving and want to rustle up some already cooked and seasoned crabs to take home with you - THIS is your only stop. LOVE EM!

Always my go-to for crabs and shrimp! No muss no fuss!

    (5)
  • Celia C.

Great crabs and great value! Crabs on the bottom of the half bushel box were a bit overdone and dry....probably because the heat continued to cook them (the box was SCORCHING hot for almost the entire time we ate the crabs)......otherwise no complaints!

  • Ricochet H.

The crabs and service is great but I have one issue I live like 40 minutes away and my wife like large females so when I make the 40 minute drive just to find out that they are out of large females is truly a blower. I tried calling but only get voice mail ...HELP the ride is well worth it when I can get what I want.....

I'm a Nashville native/DC transplant and this was my first (but definitely not my last) venture to the infamous crab shack. Down south we have Joe's Crab shack which is a cheap imitation. The crabs were large and succulent. It's 1am and I'm doing my research to see if it's crab season........I pray it is. Rough N Ready, ready when you are!

Crab legs and crabs are generally good but the shrimp tend to be mushy/non-edible.

Fried shrimp from RnR with a touch of a slurpee from 7-11 down the street ... just another saturday night in Hyattsville. Loves it!!

No one sings the praises of Ruff N Ready as often and as loud as I do. Between Spring and early Fall -- I'm there between 1 - 3 times per week getting crabs, EASY! Perfectly seasoned, heavy and meaty crabs to die for. Love that they have options . . . and when they have jumbo crabs, I'm as giddy as a school girl! You must check them out. Must.

Damn yall the neighborhood is not THAT bad. It is perfectly hood. But the crab and shrimp are on point and the service is friendly indeed.

Awesome crab, great prices, shrimp are pretty impressive too. From the outside you wouldn't think they'd produce such a great product. Ice T Lemonade mix isn't bad either

  • Oliver W.

$48 a dozen for large crabs that were large and well cooked. I bought 4 dozen and only had one that was mushy. This place is in a rough neighborhood, but the staff was quick and friendly. I'll definitely go back.

  • Kazena S.

WOW what can I say, good ole crabs, best place in PG County to DC, I can't wait to go and get these crabs and head over to the park, who cares about ambiance, I just want the food to be good, if you want ambiance and good crabs, you should just head over to Kent Island, personally I just want some good A$$ crabs...ruff and ready..I'm ready...see you'll tonight!!!

  • Sandy T.

Excellent crab! A friend of mine who is a DC native introduced me to this place. We got several crabs and then headed to Rock Creek Park with some hard cider for a picnic...a great summer activity.

  • Amon K.

Just right. Take-out only. Good value $45/half bushel mixed crabs; $20/40 shrimp. 3 things ONLY on the menu - Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, shrimp, and Alaskan crab legs. Got all 3 menu items twice in the same week. I've been before to the places on Maine Ave. but this was better. This is all they do since 1963, and DON'T change a good thing when you have a good thing going. The shrimp in particular were especially delicious. While I was there, a guy was saying how he drives in an hour each weekend just to go here... No ordering in advance.
