Not baaaaaaaaad Hagerstown! A member of the extremely friendly waiting staff led us to a table, and brought (this is where I fell in love) fresh tortilla chips with a DELICIOUS salsa...that's served in a "wine" flask! One of the cutest accents I've ever seen :) So after stuffing myself with that wonderful salsa, I ordered the shrimp taco salad. HUGE portion, deliciously flavored shrimp, and lots of flavorful veggies inside a perfectly crisped taco bowl. It's everything I wanted, and more...did I mention the guacamole that's made right in front of you? Fresh ingredients are combined in a large bowl with a mortar and pestle. Yeah. It's that legit. The ambiance is perfect for a Mexican restaurant. Comfortable booth seating, friendly waiters, and the aroma of sizzling meat and spices wafting through. The only downfall? All of the decadent cheese in my salad was covering the bottom of the taco bowl.

Great Mexican food! Love the other sauce they give you with chips/salsa. Margs are always wonderful, too!

Love this place! The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly and fast, and the food is great! Love the bean dip and quesadillas.

As stated, it is difficult to find. Once you turn on Opal make your first right and go to the end of the building. 830 on a Friday night the restaurant was almost empty. Chips, salsa and ranch dip were brought to the table moments after being seated. Chips were fresh, warm and tasty. Salsa was nice. Went with Yelp suggestions and ordered the guacamole prepared table side. It was tasty and certainly fresh. Then ordered the pork taco. I felt something or many things were missing. It consisted of little pieces of pork on a soft tortilla. Meat was dry. Maybe with some lettuce and cheese it might have been more appealing and had moe taste. After a couple of bites I decided to pass. The retried beans were pretty good while the rice was dry and lacked flavor. Maybe we ordered incorrectly and might possibly give it another try.

La Tolteca has been at its current location in Hagerstown for about 5 or 6 years now. We kept saying "oh, we've never been there, we should go", but we never did until this afternoon. Part of the reason it took us so long is that it's in a terrible location and does not look inviting from the road. The establishment is on the ground floor of a 3 story office/medical building - which is not easy to enter from the busy road - and the outside of the structure is covered in reflective blue glass with dark windows. You can't tell what it is except for their sign in the parking lot and the neon "OPEN" sign. The menu "looks" like every other Mexican bill of fare, right down to the terrible photos that do nothing to entice the reader. All the standards are there: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas - and all served with a combination of rice, refried beans, sour cream, etc. What is different about La Tolteca is the preparation of the food. Everything we ate was at least good, most of it was very good. We started with "made-at-your-table" guacamole. Our server crushed and mixed simple ingredients in a mortar/pestle to create a sublime concoction - the lime and cilantro gave this dish a wonderful fresh zing. Too good to be true, I thought. I was not surprised to see our dinners arrive on too-hot platters, - entre, "Spanish" rice, refried beans: the usual. But, we were again surprised at the level of flavor the chef was able to create in both (Hubby's) carnitas plate and (my) Chile Poblano. The pork carnitas were tender, moist and flavorful. The poblano peppers were filled with chunks of tender potato and onion, then smothered in a very nice chipotle enchilada sauce. The rice was rather bland, but the refried beans were good. Not the usual pool of paste, but a little chunky and nicely seasoned. The regular margarita was okay, but at least it didn't cost $8 like some restaurants. Also, they served a white salad dressing(?) with the chips that was weirdly sweet and not very good. Prices are reasonable, atmosphere is lackluster, but clean.

My first here. Saw the good reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give it a try. Came to the area to shop at Premium Outlets. The service was great. I felt welcomed by the hostess and the server was helpful. This place has a ton of menu options, but they explain every option if you ask. I had the fajitas and my hubby had the chicken burrito. Good! The strawberry margarita on the rocks was great! It was the best thing the restaurant had to offer. You cannot beat the prices either. When I come back to the area, I will come back and try another dish. I recommend!

Same great place. New menu. I found all my old favorites, and a few new items. I had the grilled talapia.or came with salad, and Spanish rice. It was very nice.

Don't waste your money or your time here. There are other Mexican restaurants close-by that serve much better food. Me and my girlfriend each ordered fajitas and her food came out looking good while my food food came out burnt and over cooked. Explain that to me. Let me say my fajita portion came out burnt and over cooked. Absolutely inedible. Will never be back. Staff is friendly and courteous but oblivious to what correctly cooked food should look like.

Favorite restaurant, you won't get it with the chips but make sure you ask for the ranch sauce. That alone makes this restaurant visit worth it.

I've probably been here about 10 times now and have to say this is my favorite Mexican place in the Hagerstown area. The food is good and the prices are fair. All the employees seem nice and are friendly.... I usually get fajitas here and they do NOT skimp on the meat...they give you a generous portion...especially the Texas Fajitas (Combo of Steak, Chicken, Shrimp). I love the red salsa that comes with the complimentary basket of tortilla chips. Sometimes I'm 1/2 filled with chips/salsa before my meal arrives.

Found this place on Yelp while traveling from Syracuse, NY to McComb, MS. The salsa was great, which is always a good sign of a Mexican restaurant in my opinion. I ordered chicken nachos and was thoroughly pleased with the meal. They weren't very busy as it was mid-afternoon, but the food was great. Yet another great restaurant discovered on Yelp!

Good as usual. This is my girlfriends favorite restaurant. Everyone is always friendly and upbeat. Food is good and you never have to sit for a long time to get served.

Great food. Huge portions. I will definitely come here again. The carnitas were well prepared, meaty, juicy and twice as much as I could eat. The fresh guacamole was a great deal for $4.

Very nice. Tucked away in the ground floor of an office building, it's a little hard to notice if you're driving around looking for dinner. But it's worth the effort. Tasty, fresh food, with a dazzling number of possible combos, fast and friendly service, what's not to like?

This is the best place for Mexican food in the area, hands down. The margaritas are delicious, and inexpensive, especially if you go on Tuesday when they are $1.99. They will do special orders. My daughter loves shrimp so instead of a kids beef taco salad, she subs shrimp. During my crazy pregnancy cravings they would add all kinds of things to my dishes per request( I wanted spinach on everything). Don't skip dessert, the fried ice cream is fantastic. The coffee is also amazing.

Whenever I come to home to Hagerstown I eat here. I love the food here. It's always delicious and they make a decent margarita too. My favorite dish is the spinach enchiladas, but everything else I have had has always been great too. Love the salsa and the guac made at your table. Service is good too.

Our favorite Mexican restaurant! Guacamole made at the table is GREAT!!! Have never had something we didn't like. Highly recommend this place.

This restaurant is certainly kid friendly. However if you don't have kids I fail to see the charm. Nothing wrong with the food, but nothing special either. It feels more like a chain than an independant place. Whole lot better than Cinco de Mayo, has a lot of catching up to meet the level of El Paso.

The service is stupendous I have always been greeted with a friendly smile even on nights that the restaurant is packed. The decor is clean and attractive enough to create a nice ambience. I realty enjoyed the fish tacos although I think the menu could use some alternative selections though.

Best Mexican place in town, good service and great food.. The restaurant inside looks very upscale .. I love the carnitas from here.. And the chips and cheese dip are very good as well

Taco meat tasted old taco salad was so greasy the bottom fell out when it got to the table and found metal in the beans when I took a bite of them. Didn't pay for anything except feeling bad the rest of the night and puking at sheetz across the road

My husband and I had Lunch here on Sunday. I was giving them a second chance because he food is pretty good, however the chips are tough and stale. Also the service is ok but not great, it seems they do not have enough help as the restaurant was pretty full and everyone had to wait for quite a while before anyone brought drinks or took our order. I was hoping things would have improved however the pretty good food dos not make up for lack of service and constantly stale chips. I don't know perhaps they make to many on a Saturday and try to use them up on Sunday. Oh we'll on to my journey to find a good Mexican Restaurant in Washington County.

The ground beef they served me was tasteless. Not sure how you can make mexican food without seasoning. The salsa wasn't great either. I am a huge fan of mexican food so I was really disappointed.

Very good food with great portions and nice staff. The guacamole made at the table is awesome. I recommend the carnitas (pork tacos).

Friendly, prompt service, unremarkable food. Not worth a second visit. Bland food reheated to order. Nothing tasted fresh. Half our party had upset stomachs following our meal.

Solid Mexican food. Great margaritas, I got the spinach enchilada and added mushrooms. I am not a vegetarian but unjust wanted something light. This hit the spot. Glad we came here.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Hagerstown. The food tastes fresh and flavorful. My favorites are the pork tacos & the guacamole (made fresh at your table, thank you very much!). The margaritas are so-so, but they have a happy hour special - $2.50. Even a bad margarita is a good deal at that price!

Cheap beer, and great prices. They give you way more than you should eat in one sitting. I definitely didn`t need desert after that meal. Very fast and friendly service

My husband and I were quite disappointed when we left La Tolteca. The reviews on yelp were great but we felt the experience was lackluster. The food was ok, but not particularly good. We only had vegetarian food (so we honestly have no idea about the meat dishes - they could be fine!). Both the fajitas and the burritos for us were excessively greasy. and we don't have any plans to return. Service was also just..... okay. In fact, we waited a little bit longer than preferred for our drinks as well.

Ok...I give up! I can't find a good Mexican restaurant here in Hagerstown. The food is mediocre at best. The food is better than the food at El Ranchero...but that's not saying much (see my El Ranchero review...in the filtered section). I have lived in CA and TX, so I know what good authentic Mexican food tastes like...unfortunately it's not here.

The best Mexican restaurant in Hagerstown. I've tried El Ranchero across town, but have been disappointed by the service so I decided to try La Tolteca. The food was fantastic, the beer selection is good and the service is some of the best I've ever had. I highly recommend the beef nachos and I recently had the pork tacos (the first time I've had them anywhere) and they were outstanding. I've also had the steak fajitas and will be getting them again!

Was pleasantly surprised when we got here. Hubby loves Mexican food and this had good reviews but we had our bad experiences with other restaurants here on yelp so we didn't count on it much. It was a sunday night when we came we were expecting the place to be packed but we're surprised when it wasn't. The menu was overwhelming in a way that there's so much to choose from! ; ) i had the veggie quesadilla which was fabulous, the portions were huge so you'll really get full, hubby had like the enchilada plate which was good too. The chips were a bit too greasy for my taste and the ranch dressing was bad. The reviews didn't deliver as much as it should but for the good food, this place is definitely a must to visit!

The restaurant was clean and when we entered, we were greeted promptly and a table was prepared for us. Unfortunately, that was the last promptness of the meal. The service was so slow. And it took over an hour for our food to be brought out. The meals were very bland (5 of us at our table and no one enjoyed their meal). Two people had the Crab Enchiladas. Although it was real crab, it was just shredded crab inside of two small corn tortillas with Enchilada sauce. Very tasteless. Another person got the Mango Talipia. It was dry and with little sauce. She couldn't finish it. I had the Fire Enchiladas. They were average as far as Mexican fare. But, when we left and I got home (maybe 30 minutes after lunch), my wife was feeling stomach cramps and I was feeling sick. Within another couple of minutes I threw up and lost the entire lunch. By a couple of hours later I was feeling fine, and I'm reviewing this the next day and I'm still feeling fine. So is my wife. There is no doubt that lunch here made us sick. We will never eat at this place again.

I've been to La Tolteca three times so far. This is my new favorite Mexican place in Hagerstown. I've actually ordered the same thing all three times (something I don't normally do since I love trying new things) but the spicy guacamole, fish tacos and margaritas are so good that I'm not sure I will ever get anything else. I was surprised when I first got the guacamole that it's made fresh right at your table. I think this is a nice touch service wise and you can easily customize how you'd like it made. The service is great - the first two times I went we had Ramon (pretty sure that's his name) and he handled a table of 15 like a pro all by himself and a table of 2 the same exact way. I was really impressed with him. There is a patio that I still want to get a chance to visit and have some margaritas but every time I've attempted to go it has poured down rain. Looking forward to more visits!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
