This restaurant is a great addition to Hagerstown. The food is outstanding, and the portions are big enough for two meals, so you definitely get your money's worth. The service was a little on the slow side when we last went, but they were still pretty new and probably working out the kinks. Overall, I highly recommend it. Also, the menu clearly states that they add an 18% gratuity for split checks, and while I don't think that's a very good policy, you can't say you weren't warned.

We enthusiastically wanted to try the newer North end Black Eyed Susan. We are sorry to report extremely mediocre food. How sad, since we had experienced a great catering event by this same group and enjoyed the Virginia Ave location. The staff was attentive and helpful and all food was served in a timely manner. Our waitress brought warm bread and a nice basil infused olive dipping oil to start and we were delighted. We started with a nicely seasoned Caesar salad and we were looking forward to our main course. We ordered the Clam bake and The Seafood Broil. The Seafood Broil should have been named "boil". There was not an ounce of broiled seafood. What appeared was a soupy, sloppy boiled mess of shrimp, a few scallops and a few lumps of crab just tossed into the 'soup', along with an obviously pre-frozen piece of flounder that was just awful in fishy taste. The accompanying vegetables were so soupy that they were barely recognizable. The Clam Bake was equally soupy-it was the same flavorless "boiling" liquid that the Seafood Broil contained. There were far too many slices of potatoes and chorizo and mediocre seafood. Perhaps, the Summer Seafood Fest is not the best example of the kitchen's skill. Then again, maybe it is.

I was staying nearby and this was suggested by the hotel staff. The food was excellent, especially the daily special oysters appetizer that we had. All of the seafood we ordered was prepared perfectly. Our waitress couldn't have been more helpful in making several recommendations and was always nearby with a sweet tea refill. If I'm ever in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to return.

my boyfriend and i had dinner here for the second time and i can confidently say we won't be going back. ever. the first time we went, i had a cup of french onion soup (so unbelievably salty that i only had a couple spoonfuls), the gourmet grilled cheese (extremely greasy, couldn't finish either), and the pineapple maple coleslaw (way too sugary/sweet to finish). my bf enjoyed his meal which was a german beef stew in celebration of oktoberfest. then last night we decided to finally go and take advantage if their $2 margaritas & $5 burgers night. it took upwards of ten minutes before our waitress came. we asked for no salt on the margaritas, both had salt. our heidi fries came without both truffle oil and dijon. i'm a vegetarian and didn't think i was being difficult when i asked for a burger with portobello, goat cheese and onions instead of meat. it's essentially just ordering a burger with only toppings. it took a while for our server to understand what i wanted. then it took more than 20 minutes for the meals. my burger was good but my boyfriend's meat burger was so salty he didn't take more than one bite. we both got sides of the feta pasta salad which was al dente and much too chewy. he also ordered six pieces of the garlic black pepper wings and liked those. the bill came and i was appalled to find that i was charged $10.50 for my burger when their menu states $1 for portobello on burgers. it's insane to me that i paid double for an item that was made out of cheap toppings. i also find it silly to charge people for cake plating. i attended a wedding that used black eyed susan as their catering service and i don't remember it being this bad. i think they're trying way too hard and failing miserably. i don't recommend this place to anyone, not for service, not for quality, and especially not for vegetarians.

Best grilled cheese ever! I had the gourmet grilled cheese, which was amazing! The service was fantastic, very polite and attentive. We also had the baked crab dip which comes with home made chips, and it was amazing! Will definitely eat there again! If you come to Hagerstown this restaurant is a must!

I have been to this restaurant several times now and have been satisfied with every visit. The menu is easy and everything cook to perfection every time. My daughter (a Four year old) who is pretty out going but particular loves the Goat Cheese Fritters and the Puttanesca is one of my favorites. As a local restaurant Chef/Owner myself, it is nice to know that i can sneak away and grab a nice meal some where else for a change. The staff is great as well!!!

Well, I must say that I am quite the skeptic when it comes to Hagerstown restaurants; however, this place was a breath of fresh air! My parents recently went to this restaurant and loved it, so I had to try it out when I was in town visiting. We started our meal with the warmed brie appetizer and the complementary bread with pesto oil, which were both delicious!!! Our entrees consisted of blacked salmon on a bed of ceasar salad, crab cake dinner and the crab stuffed shrimp. We were so pleased with our meals. As far as the atmosphere at the restaurant goes, it could use some work, but not too shabby for this town. I have been to a lot of restaurants in the area and have never had a meal of this caliber in H-town. I will definitely be returning!

We had dinner on a recent Saturday night. Cesar salads, salmon, grits, and dessert imported from NJ. Everything was very good. The salmon was excellent - cooked to order a shade under medium. The grits were stone ground. The vinegar-based sauce in the rice served under the salmon was inventive and quite good. NJ knows to how export a great delicate dessert to help finish off a good meal. The space the restaurant is in isn't the greatest, the seating when you first peer in looks a little too sports bar, but that was about the only negative about the experience. The waiter was hurried but friendly when he slowed down. A little conversation and a discussion of the menu items goes a long way toward building repeat business based on something other than price. This isn't NY, where brisk is best. All-in-all a genuinely good meal and another restaurant to add to our regular dining circuit.

I went here 3 times before I gave up... I have a gluten allergy and I'm always look for places that have gluten free options. The first time I went we had decent service from a very young girl. Food was pretty good(minus the coleslaw) considering the up charge for my specialized meal that didn't turn out to be anything like I asked for. I would have complained if I didn't have a father that complained at nearly every restaurant I've been to with him. We had to ask for ketchup even though both my husband and I had fries. I didn't think badly of the experience at all until the next time we ate there. The second time we went there was a private party being held(but obviously not at that exact time because the parking lot was empty)... How exactly do they expect to do business. Don't most restaurants have a private dining area for this?? so we were annoyed we traveled 30 minutes for this. Third times a charm right? Not so much... We went on a margarita night next I expected them to be a little watered down as with my experience with cheap margaritas deals but I more than likely had 2000 calories in mix before I felt a slight buzz my husband and I had 11(and I consider myself an easy drunk) and they took took long to bring them most of the time. Food about the same as last time but our fries were miserably cold and our waitress horrible... She never asked us if we needed anything We had to stop her to get her attention every time we saw her to get our drinks refreshed which was a lot because our meal took so long. When she had left the table with our food she walked directly to the table next to us and spent the entire meal with her back turned to us talking to the people in the booth next to us. We never got our ketchup we had asked for. She never turned her head to at least check that everything was ok. By the time she came back after she walked away from the neighboring booth. We asked for the check which took way too long because we were pretty miserable at this point I would say it was close to 10 minutes to get the check then to come back for it and another 5 to charge our card. I'm normally a very good tipper because I have worked for tips before 20-25% normally this was the first time I ever left a 10% tip.. I won't be going back because I wouldn't run the risk of running into this again. Management must be oblivious or maybe she was the manager I'd hope not... I would rate one star if it wasn't for the 1st server(16-17 maybe) it's pretty sad when a kid does a better job than a grown woman.

I took a workmate out for a casual dinner. The food was good. We both had tomato soup. He had salmon, and I had crab-stuffed portobello. The server did a good job of describing the dishes. She was also very knowledgeable about the draft beers. The portobello had a lot of cheese, and there was more filling than crab, but I think the dish was 'as described' by our waitress, so I can't really complain. I would return to this restaurant again.

The food was awesome, except for the asparagus soup is pretty bland. The one thing that I absolutely didn't like was that the server added a 18% gratuity to our checks because we asked her to split the check in half for a party if four. First for everything!

My husband and I ate here last night and I am back here today at lunch with my mom to treat her to the same delightful dish my husband enjoyed. The chef certainly knows how to please, and the waitress's are great.

I went in for a quick lunch and thought I would sit at the bar. There were a few people who looked like employees and possibly a friend. The service was lackluster and extremely slow. I only ordered a simple grilled cheese and some soup but it took nearly 45 mins to get it. And when it did come it did not meet my expectations for a good gourmet grilled cheese. My questions about beer selection went mostly unanswered or answered with ambivalence. This will be my first and last time trying it out.

Wings were very good for appetizers. Nice hot n crispy. Could have even just had those for dinner. Definitely order small pasta dishes for yourself. The large is family sized. Food was quite good, if perhaps a bit on the pricey side.

A great update to the menu! Still great food that is above the norm for the area, friendly chatty waitresses. (never seen a waiter here, wonder why?) You may wait a while or the food, but good things come he who waits!

Very disappointed with food on our first visit January 2013. Wait staff responsive when we needed to send something back. We have not been back since. Perhaps from the new reviews we should try again.

Had dinner at Black Eyed Susan North, this weekend. We started out with the crab fries appetizer and it was incredible. Plenty of crab meat on the fries. Then we had a special spinach salad with roasted grapes on it. I had never had roasted grapes before, but let me tell you it was awesome. Finally, we had the shrimp and grits for dinner. Very New Orleans. Great taste. My fiance was born and raised in the deep south and even she said they were very good. The only glitch of the evening happened when the waitress forgot to bring our glasses of wine. Otherwise the service was friendly, polite, timely, and attentive. For the area, Black Eyed Susan North is a little pricey. However, the great food and terrific service ensured that we will be back from time to time.

This is a great find in the area. Reminds me of the Ellicott City Bare Bones. It's in a strip mall and has comparable quality and tasting food and also similar prices. My husband had the Chicken Chesapeake and loved it. I had the shrimp and grits and enjoyed them very much. My mojito was a little disappointing, but I'm probably too picky since I make my own at home!

Just tried this Restsurant for the first time and were very pleased. Excellent variety of choice on the menu. We chose to try wings and the MD crab salad. Loved the cilantro chili wings and the salad was made with very fresh ingredients. Great atmosphere and our server April was the BEST! Give this place a try you will not be disappointed. Glad we did and I'm sure we will return again.

Tried this place once and have never been back. Went at dinner time and the entire place was dead. We were the only table and still managed to receive slow and indifferent service. The hostess and waitress did not make us feel welcome. In fact, it seemed as if it was a bother to have had to serve us. Weird location in a strip mall next to a Food Lion and nail salon. Inside is overly and extravagantly decorated. We opted to eat here after hearing rave reviews, as well as knowing they are a large caterer in the area. We were very disappointed as there was nothing note-worthy about the food or service. I had the reuben and the crab chowder. The meat on the sandwich was tough, not the buttery-fall-apart tenderness it should have been. Our expectations were high, considering the reviews and the impressions of the people who had eaten at their previous Virginia Ave location. We knew the prices were on the higher-end for the Hagerstown market, so we were expecting the food to match the price point, and it didn't. Won't be returning or recommending Black Eyed Susan to others.
