Our family loves this place. Been there close to a dozen times, foods always great and the staff is wonderful. My daughter loves the panang chicken we all love the curry puffs. They have great happy hour prices as well...give it a try you'll love it!

When I moved to Frederick from New York, I was really closed minded about being able to find good food here. Sumitra easily equals my favorite spots in NYC and Brooklyn. The prices are really reasonable for the amount of amazing food you get and they are really good about knowing the difference between spicy and mild, so definitely ask if you prefer one or the other. This place gets packed on Friday and Saturday so be there early or expect a small wait. The staff are really pleasant and hard working people as well. A thing I like to support in general. This is definitely some of the best thai food I've ever eaten.

I was looking for a great Thai restaurant here and Sumittra fit the bill. The staff were all very helpful and service was fast. I had the Trio with noodles and it was very tasty. They of course have all of your standard Thai dishes and from the looks of other diner's food, they are doing it right.

Really good Thai food. Well-seasoned and well-prepared. Great service too. The Tom Kha soup was wonderful. I shall definitely be going back for more.

Decided to stop in for lunch after church on a Sunday. Not busy at all and very friendly staff! Ordered my go to chicken pad Thai, excellent and good portion. Hubs ordered a curry dish that he enjoyed but just not as spicy as he would have liked. Would go back if craving Thai in the area!

The girls at the office are addicted to Sumittra so we get takeout for lunch at least once a week. We absolutely love the Chicken and Shrimp Salad and the Tom Yum soup. The Kow Pad Sapparod is to die for- I once had it three days in a row.

I've been here about three to four times. The service is usually great and the food usually quite good. I wouldn't say it's the best, but it's definitely good considering you're on the East Coast. My fav is the lemon grass iced tea but it was a little bland this trip. The fried tofu was crispy and soft inside, the peanut sauce was a sweet vinegary peanut blend. Will probably go back to my fav, drunken noodle.

so there's really nothing bad about this place. but here's where another place like "kittiwat" just 5miles down the street at westview is better. this place dont allow split bills which is just so outdated you pay for parking the food size is a lil small they're set with what they have on their menu and not open to modifications. bathroom locks are ghetto convenience is big for me. this place is pretty inconvenient. in other words I don't recommend this place.

I have never given a place 5 stars (at least, I don't remember doing so LOL). But, I have extended the extra star because this is the place "where everyone knows your name, and they're always glad you came". Not only is the food and customer service delicious (LOVE the ocean rolls!!), but they're very personalized in their appreciation for their customers. And, it never hurts that they made my lil one feel special. :-) I don't live close, but I look forward to returning when I'm in the area.

Having lived in Thailand for a while, I can say that those who are expecting truly authentic Thai in the U.S. are clearly shooting too high; most restaurants probably wouldn't be up to code. But this joint does a good job of recreating a southeast Asian experience that is familiar to the western diners while still being exotic enough to be a fun and different dining choice. From curry to pad Thai, Sumitra has all the basics. And it's good food to boot. The atmosphere has a great modern flare, and the location right on the downtown strip couldn't be any better. Every time I've gone in I've been greeted by a welcoming staff and a clean dining experience. I have virtually no complaints, except for a slight lack of variety of some types of dishes. But overall, it's so far the best Thai food I've had in town.

The food is quite good. I recommend trying the specialty drinks if you don't have to drive! It's a nice place, slightly on the pricier side, so more of a date night type of place for me. I don't go too often because of the seating, which is rather cramped and usually lacks the intimacy for a nice date. It can be hard to have a conversation, as you're either trying to talk over the neighboring tables or feeling like you're eavesdropping on the people next to you.

I've eaten at Sumittra several times and have found it to be sort of inconsistent, leaning towards the good side of things. Food is hit or miss from dish to dish, but consistency within the menu item is there. Definitely get the (non-alcoholic) Thai Iced Tea - one of the best specialty beverages I've ever had, and it can be enhanced with a shot of rum thrown in. Atmosphere is lacking. Tables and chairs are not the most comfortable, and while the room would look nice in a photograph, it is not as clean as it needs to be when you get up close. Overall I would enjoy this place more as a casual/takeout restaurant, rather than the date night spot it wants to be. If I were able to get out of there without spending $20 on lunch with tip, I would definitely visit more often.

I had the Kow Pad Ka Prao. It is a fried rice dish that I got with shrimp. First of all, you are hit with the dramatic presentation and the wafting of aromas. My rice dish was molded into a bowl-like shape with crisp basil on top and vibrant red peppers and shrimp peeking through. The flavors are layered and very well developed. It was spicy as promised. Though, I could have had it kicked up another notch. The shrimp were medium sized and fresh. The veggies were very fresh and slightly crisp. The shrimp could be a bit better if there was a bit of carmelization on them instead of just simply steamed. The service is good and the decor has a sleek modern vibe. It is about $20 pp for a meal and a drink. I had the Thai iced tea.

Wonderful service, and delicious food! The waiter helped me picked out the perfect entrée based on the ingredients I wanted to eat. It was perfect! Really enjoyed the stir fry's, the chicken satay and the edammame. Very cool vibe, and good prices. Great location in Frederick too if you are downtown walking around. Outdoor seating was limited but also nice.

The atmosphere is good I love the outside seating. The Decor is modern with simplicity. The customer service is basic. The food is average nothing to rave about. The food was just bland not a lot of flavor. It's was nice to try something different but I will not come back here again. The sangria had mini apples floating in it the drink with the skin on the apples. No it was not a apple sangria.

Larb Gai was under seasoned, it was missing the tanginess that the dish requires. Decent seasoning on the drunken noodles, too bad it didn't have much chicken, and it was dry. Was really hoping to have a go to place in downtown. Maybe because they have so many customers they have to have a system to rush orders out.

Fast service, quiet, hip but comfortable decor. Enjoyed every minute. Peking duck roll has crispy duck inside. We were steering away from fried food, but we were happy with this surprise because it was good. The sauce was kind of hoisin-y but also peanuty. Didn't quite get the red garnish, but it was pretty. Tom Yum soup with shrimp came with three well-cooked shrimp and was hot but not overwhelming. The winner of the evening was the chicken and eggplant special. I think it was in a sweet basil sauce. Whatever it was, we loved it. Only downside is no AMEX. Also when you walk in, the entrance is a little weird. When you walk in there is a wall basically in your face. No matter once you are seated.

A pair of Frederick friends suggested Summitra for a late lunch today. I love Thai food, so my partner & I went along with that idea happily. It's in an older building & on one of the main drags of downtown Frederick, so parking is likely to be a schlep. The dining room has brick & laid-back decor. Friendly servers seated us; both I & my sweetie's seats were a little wobbly. Despite it getting fairly crowded, we were quickly re-seated at a bench table - our friends took the chair seats. ;) (Thanks J & P!) The atmosphere is flexible; we were casually dressed & didn't feel out of place, but this would be a cute spot for date night, too. Though there were people around us, the noise level overall was low. Was nice to be able to chat with friends. For appetizers, our pals got the spring rolls & said they were tasty. We got the Peking Duck roll & the chive dumplings. The roll had a slightly thicker outside than I'm used to rolls having, more of a pancake than a wonton-style wrapping. It was nonetheless delicious: savory meat, crisp vegetables & a tangy sauce were emphasized by the slightly doughy, chewy exterior. The chive dumplings were decidedly nontraditional in shape. They were little triangles instead of the soft round dumpling shape I'm used to. But the fried exterior gave way to more chewiness. If you're familiar with the texture of chive dumplings, you'll know this is a plus. The vegetative, slightly onion-y dumpling filling was wonderful & offset with a sweet sauce for dipping that reminded me of soy crossed with hoisin. For entrees, my partner got the Pad Thai with chicken, & I decided to go for something new. I ordered the Fantasia Duck. I tried the Pad Thai; though the noodles were moist & the chicken plentiful, the sauce didn't have a level of tang I like in this dish. I don't know where that flavor comes from - tamarind paste? fish sauce? lemongrass? - so I can't say for sure what it was I wanted, there, besides a little more zip overall. Nonetheless, very good. Dry Pad Thai is the bane of my mouth & that wasn't the case here. Nice & moist, w/ fresh crunchy bean sprouts on the side. Most people would be pleased with this Pad Thai. That Fantasia Duck, though. Oooooo, was that good. I'm not used to Thai duck having a fried exterior so I didn't know how that would work out. The short answer is: delicious! Although this is a two-pepper heat rating on Sumittra's menu, I asked them to knock a pepper off, as I'm a wuss. The resulting pleasant sting of spice was just enough for me to notice it, but not so much I couldn't enjoy all of the lush, juicy duck meat. It was coated in a crispy breading that was decadent but not heavy. The sauce was a light brown sauce which I imagine can be made hotter as well as milder. The vegetables adorning the top were cooked perfectly - just on the cooked side of crunchy. Their sweetness was the perfect foil to the rest of the dish. Since we had a couple of sweet Thai iced teas with our meal - they arrived in beautiful layers, by the way, no cheating & using an instant mix here - we decided to skip dessert. This lunch was sliiiiightly pricier than we're used to paying forThai food (disclaimer: we're spoiled & live in an area lousy w/ good Thai). That, & having to punch a code to get into the single restroom - which people tried to enter while I was in it, as the code system is annoying - cost them a star. But it was a nice meal, promptly served, by friendly people. Overall, a win. Go there, but I suggest trying something more adventurous than the Pad Thai. ;)

Pretty good Thai food for being this far from Thailand. I had the Fantasia Duck which is a fried boneless duck breast with basil in chili and garlic sauce. The duck breast was fried, but with light breading so that the flavor of the duck meat wasn't overcome. The menu had 3 levels of spice, 1, 2, and 3 peppers. This was a 2-pepper meal and this definitely delivered. It was very spicy, and my lips were burning by the end of the dish. I like it spicy so I was a big fan. The duck was served with a small side of Jasmine rice, so the overall portion size was appropriate for an adult. For an appetizer I had the Ocean Spring Rolls with a chili sauce. They weren't spectacular, but they were ably done. They were nicely fried with large chunks of shrimp inside. For dessert I went with the Kanom Mor-Gang a Thai coconut egg custard. It was freshly made, cut into quarters, and served with a little bit of whipped cream. It was not overpoweringly sweet, and the hint of coconut in the custard really made the dish for me. My mother had the Banana Spring Rolls which I sampled, and they were awesome! The food was good, but the service was a bit lacking. We had to wait a while for our food. While it appeared that they were making everything fresh, the delay was significant. However, on the bright side when my father ordered the Kow Niew Mamuang (sticky rice with Mango) the server made sure that the mango was sweet before she let him order it. Additionally, my mother originally ordered the creme brulee for dessert, but the server came back and said she didn't think it was servable. While It was disappointing that she couldn't get the creme brulee, it was refreshing to see a server be so honest about the food. I'm not local, so the only parking I found was in a parking garage about a block away which was only about a 5 minute walk away. It was free because it was a weekend, but apparently you have to pay during the week.

Good flavor, but not quite traditional Thai (and I really don't think that is what the proprietors are going for, anyway). Very quaint atmosphere w/absolutely no wait. Super staff, courteous and friendly; a nice welcoming environment. Wife liked it, so we will more than likely give this restaurant another go. More spice next time, though please! Thai spicy is the way to go.

I love the food here, I have always liked this place. I work downtown and today I ordered food to go to eat quickly on my twenty minute break. I picked up my food and paid, and not a single person was in the restaurant or sitting outside, the only person was the woman I got my order from. It was 2:30 in the afternoon and since I stand all day and no one was around, I decided to sit at an outside table and eat quickly. I started eating and the woman came out and said I couldn't sit there even though no one was eating in or outside of the restaurant and I had paid. I will no longer recommend this restaurant and I will not be eating here anymore. I am very disappointed in the service.

This was our first visit: Had the duck breast in tamarind sauce with rice, fruit salad and asparagus. Now, I'm not very experienced with Thai food, but I would call this meal surprising, amazing, melt in your mouth, and just "wow." The duck breast was soooo tender, not overly sweet and cooked to a perfect pink in the middle, and the asparagus was snappy but tender. Unfortunately, this was from the weekly special menu, but let us all hope the chef loves this dish too and is happy to serve it on special menus for a long time to come. Our waiter was super helpful in helping us to make our selections, and it seemed as if every employee in the restaurant had a happy smile and warm greeting. As for atmosphere, as another reviewer mentioned: it is loud in this place, and it is small so some tables are in somewhat inconvenient places, and the bathrooms are in a totally different area. We sat very near the door, which would not be acceptable in winter, I imagine, but was fine for a fine first Saturday night in Frederick. This restaurant was recommended by friends and I have recommended to others as well.

I'm a regular here. Best Thai food in Frederick, and probably much of Maryland. I'm not Thai, but I have a Thai friend who I went with often and she said this place is the real deal, even by Thai standards. Eat here. It's delicious and inexpensive.

Food was awesome! I had the steak pad see ew and my friend ordered the curry salmon which both were insanely amazing. We also started with really great thai ice tea. Interior is small but you don't get the feeling with their mirrors. Sheek, modern decor, limited outdoor seating. But overall a great spot conveniently in the middle of downtown frederick.

If you have never tasted Thai, you may think this one is good. Having tasted Thai food in Thailand and in many places outside of Thailand, we were so disappointed with the food. We ordered curry puffs as an appetizer, probably the worst curry puffs ever!

The first time I came here I got the pad Thai with tofu and was not impressed- it was extremely mediocre and not very flavorful. We decided to go back one more and it this time around it was great. The chive dumpling appetizer is awesome and very unique in flavor. It's definitely not a dumpling but more like a lightly fried triangle filled with chives. Also got the Penang curry, drunken noodles and fried duck. The first 2 were fantastic and I would recommend them but the fried duck was too fried and killed the flavor of the meat. Glad I came back here and have it another shot.

Best Thai in Frederick--no competition. The wait staff are very friendly and professional, and the kitchen gets your meal to you quickly. Fantastic for lunch or carryout. I adore this place, and I hope they never close. I especially recommend the pad khing, the ka prao (warning: spicy!), and the mango sticky rice. If you're looking for a light meal, a bowl of the tom yum with an order of the chive dumplings hits the spot.

A real standout in Frederick's crowded restaurant scene. My wife and I crave this place on a regular basis. We'd go every week if we could. Though we're not experts in Thai food, having been to a half dozen other Thai restaurants, after our son introduced us to Sumittra a few years ago, we pretty quickly got hooked. The restaurant is in a small space in downtown Frederick, and looks simple and modern inside. Street parking is limited, but there are several close-by public garages. I would say the menu covers most traditional Thai categories, with plenty of vegetarian options (how my son got interested). Though we've tried a number of dishes here, my wife and I tend to gravitate back to our favorites: she loves the Pad Thai, and I'm crazy for their spicy Gang Keow Wahn, which is a creamy green curry with eggplant and basil (like many of their entrees, you can add a protein of your choice: chicken, steak, shrimp, pork, or tofu). She always has to get a special Thai iced tea, which they do better than I've had elsewhere. I like their beers, Dead Guy Ale in particular. If we're hungry enough, we get appetizers, too: Tom Yum lemongrass soup is always good, we've enjoyed various dumplings and spring rolls, and anything they make with the big shrimp is amazing. The Rock Shrimp appetizer, for example, is large batter-fried shrimp (similar to tempura), with some greens and a simple remoulade-like sauce. The shrimp are always very fresh and perfect. When we've tried other entrees or specials, they've been sometimes very good, sometimes okay (the fried rice dishes include just a ton of rice). The kitchen is clearly careful and skilled in what they do, but maybe some dishes just don't do it for us. The presentations are modern and classy, and portions are plentiful. Prices are very reasonable, and service has always been cheerful and efficient. On our last visit, however, we finally had a hiccup: they brought me a different entrée than I had ordered, and when I called the server back over to discuss, she was momentarily argumentative. But it was resolved quickly, and they happily (and quickly) replaced my entrée with the right one. Hey, nobody's perfect, and they sent me home smiling. If you like Thai food (or are curious), I think you'll like Sumittra. If you're vegetarian or like things spicy, so much the better. Now if we could just find more favorites among their menu offerings...

I hear a lot of people talk about how amazing this place is, but unfortunately I found the food to be really Americanized and fairly bland. It was 'fine' but definitely not as fresh or flavorful as I'm used to. Plus, any flavors or spices that I could taste, leaned more towards Chinese food than Thai food. So it's fine if that's what you're looking for.

This place is awesome! Little small and cold inside but amazing service and food. Drunken Noodles are probably the best I have had in the area. Panang Curry is my other main dish. Cant go wrong with these two. Have had a few appetizers there but nothing has really stood out. The chili pepper mojito is also amazing....gives a great kick.

Truly a gem in downtown Frederick & definitely my favorite place for lunch!!!! My personal favorites include the Kanom Jeeb (these steamed pork & shrimp dumplings are to die for!!!), the Garden Roll & for my entree the Pad Pak with Tofu, served with jasmine rice. The dishes are pretty to look at, delightful to eat & the portions are the perfect size to eat & not feel stuffed. Your stomach will be happy :)

I really hope this isn't the best Thai in Frederick... because I really like Thai food and I've been searching for a good place since I moved here. Unfortunately, this isn't it. I think it's just ok. We stopped in here for lunch today- and for 2 entrees, 1 appetizer and a soda, our lunch was $50 (with tip included). That's way too much for lunch. In addition, the food was just ok, but nothing special. I got vegetables and chicken in a brown sauce. My husband got chicken pad thai. Both unremarkable at best. We split the duck eggrolls, which were fried duck, in peanut sauce, in a chargrilled tortilla. Weird, and very gamey. I DO NOT recommend this appetizer at all. When we ordered it we asked the server about it and he said a lot of people order it and like it, but he's never tried it. That should have been our queue to order something else. The portions were on the larger side. The service was good. My search for great thai in Frederick continues.

Fantastic Thai food, great service, and good ambiance. This Is definitely one of my favorite spots in downtown Frederick. The appetizers are all very good and they have started a happy hour special with discounted drinks and starters. I've had the kanom jeeb (dumplings), garden rolls, and the chicken salad. I highly suggest the dumplings. As for entrees, the stir fried dishes are all delicious. I really like the pad pak with chicken. If you like curry dishes I would suggest the gang garee, their yellow curry. It is my new favorite dish. Since having it here, I've tried it at a few different restaurants and Sumittra's is best.

We went to Sumittra last week for lunch. When we arrived we were the only people in the place and were a little worried. Our waiter was friendly and gave us some suggestions. We placed an order for the fried tofu appetizer and then I ordered the crispy ginger duck and my husband had the sweet and sour chicken. As we waited for our meals the restaurant suddenly became packed. This was no problem as the waitstaff was very attentive. The crispy tofu good but wasn't anything special. The sauce it came with was delicious and totally made the appetizer. It was only $6 for almost an entire brick of tofu. When thee entrees arrived they were really gorgeous. My duck was mounded with fresh vegetables in a light ginger sauce. My husbands chicken was tossed in a sweet and sour sauce with fresh vegetables. The rice was served on the side. The entrees were huge and there was plenty. The vegetables were fresh and crisp while the proteins were delicious. This is one of the best Thai restaurants I've been too. The only reason I downgraded it to a 4 is due to the restrooms. To get to the restrooms you have to walk down a long hall and through 2 doors. Once there you type in a security code on the bathroom door. Now I looked and found the security code before leaving the restaurant but my husband didn't and he had to wait until someone came out and helped him enter the code. It's an odd experience. Otherwise, the service and the food was fabulous!

First time eating Thai and I was impressed. I got the ka Pow steak stir fry. It was really good. Will definitely try again if given the opportunity. Also for the shrimp in a blanket and the strawberry sauce that came with them was incredible.

The only reason I'm giving this restaurant such a low rank is not because of the food. The food was wonderful. We swing by this place once a year. This has been my third experience and my last. I'm Black and each and every time I've been there, we've been seated next to the door to the bathrooms. This time there was hardly anyone in the place. Wrong move. Goodbye.

It's a great place to dine with friends. Old jazz is playing while orange walls and wooden floors create a nice ambiance for their delicate dishes. I had the Larb tuna appetizer which is spicy- and by my standards the right amount I do like spicy. Onto two main dishes of spicy eggplant and peppers and a nice medley of vegetables with crisp asparagus, mushroom, peppers in a light sauce. Accompanied by a hot ginger tea. I enjoy this little nook in Frederick and look forward to returning.

I am very picky with my Thai food, but I can say with great confidence, Sumittra is the best I've ever had. It's authentic, flavorful, and most importantly, consistent. I usually always get the drunken noodles, but I've also had chicken panang, larb gai, and other dishes. All were excellent.

Came here for a dinner with my bestie and it was great! We were seated right away and served quickly. I started with a green papaya salad and one curry puff. Both were wonderful, the curry puff was crispy, flaky, and light on the outside but really dense and hearty on the inside (I contribute that to the potato filling) with an awesome curry flavor. Highly recommend! The green papaya salad was crisp and tasted so fresh. The peanuts were good quality whole peanuts, very fresh and such a great addition to the salad (nothing chopped and barely there like I have had at other Thai restaurants). My friend started with the Wonton Soup and raved about it. She loved the curry puff as well. For my entree, I had the Tom Yum noodle soup. The soup was ok and it was a huge bowl, however I don't believe I will order this particular dish again because it just wasn't a soup I could get into. The spicy sour broth (that I requested to be spicier) was more sour than spicy. Would have preferred it to be spicier and a bit more of a heartier broth. Plus, the cilantro was too overbearing. They gave me two shrimps which I thought was a bit skimpy, would have preferred a couple more shrimp to replace the fish balls, which had an over processed consistency, kind of like some freezer food you buy in bulk at Sam's club. The chicken, however, was good quality chicken and had a really nice flavor. My friend had the Gang Garee curry with steak. It was a big soup bowl sized portion with a heaping serving of rice. She raved about it and took it home to have for the next day. WORD TO THE WISE: When you box your food up and you have white rice, ask that they package it separately if you prefer because they will throw it all in the same container together...not good, that just completely changes the consistency and taste of the dish I think. Final thoughts? If you're in Frederick and have a craving for Thai food, stop by Sumittra. They have a vast menu of delicious food. I can't wait to go back and try their Drunken Noodles or the Kao Soi soup and get that awesome papaya salad with a curry puff again. I talked myself into just now, so who's coming with? Hehe

We were looking for a place to have lunch before heading to a wedding. We found this through yelp. This place was good. I ordered trio noodles. It was very savory and they were generous with the ingredients. There were 4 shrimps and a couple of scallops with 2 other meats. My husband had a beef curry stew which was also very tasty.

My girlfriend an I were just walking around downtown looking for a place to eat. For some reason this seemed like the best place. She ordered a fried rice an I got a green curry. She said hers was great I never tasted hers, but mine was hands down amazing everything was on point I honestly can't imagine them being able to make it any more perfect. Our server was extremely nice talked to us for a while about school. I'd highly recommend this to anyone

My son and I stopped in here serendipitously after a day kayaking the Potomac. We have many good Thai restaurants in the DC suburbs but I think this restaurant is my new favorite. Friendly, professional servers presented artistically prepared delicious diners. I will be back next time I'm in the area.

Amazing! I was looking for a little something different as I was only in town for a long weekend and decided to check this place out. I was thoroughly impressed. My party of 4 had the Thai bbq chicken, the pineapple fried rice, the seafood green curry and the Phuket seafood platter. Really, everything was delicious! The presentations were simple, but attractive and the food was amazing. I find the curry and my seafood platter to be a little spicy, and that's great! We had dumpling and spring roll appetiErs, which I would highly recommend and rice/coconut dessert and creme brûlée for dessert... Delish! If you are looking for a really great meal in a nice modernly decorated establishment, I would definitely recommend this place!

yum! We went to dinner here last night because I had a serious craving for Thai curry. We ended up ordering the Gang ped (red curry) and drunken noodles. The food was amazing. The noodles were soft and obviously very fresh. The dish had the perfect blend of spice and flavor that literally made the dish irresistible. the curry was so flavorful and smooth, i felt like I could eat with by itself! The chicken and veggies in the curry seemed to have absorbed the flavor of the curry so that every bite was a like a little burst of taste in your mouth. We both had to physically stop ourselves from eating so that we could have leftovers to take home. The service was also great. We were greeted promptly and our order taken shortly after we had received our drinks. I think knowing what to order is helpful in any Thai restaurant. Perhaps that's the reason for some of the other reviews. One thing I noticed was that the waiters were helpful in suggesting dishes. A couple at a neighboring table was having some indecision about ordering a particular dish and the waiter helpfully provided insight into what to expect with certain dishes (ie- spice level, taste spectrum) that helped the couple decide. Based on that, I would recommend asking for suggestions if you don't already have an idea what you would like to order. For my part, I recommend the drunken noodles for noodle lovers and the Gang ped for curry lovers :) Definitely recommend trying Sumittra for dinner. We'll be the couple in the corner stuffing our faces!

Good n fast service, they ignored my no-ice request but the rest of the meal was great. My vegan Panag Curry came hot/fresh/delicious in a generous portion. Will definitely stop by if in the area again.

Great, great place! We met up with some friends in Frederick and after trying to find a place to eat, on a Friday night, we were not having much luck. We actually went to another place first and opted on just drinks b/c we didn't like the atmosphere. And then there was Sumittra! Asian food is the food I always want to consume. So I was thrilled when we all settled for thai. The atmosphere was perfect, the food was great! Our waiter was awesome! Funny and charming! I'm SO glad we came here. Will definitely come back when in the area!

I really REALLY wish this place was good! but out of the 5 times ( close to my work so its convenient) i have given this place a shot, it has been TERRIBLE. now mind you most of the times it was to-go and everyone knows to-go is just so hit or miss, but they have completely missed the mark EVERY time. I LOVVEEE Thai food and have been spoiled by authentic Thai food cooked by Thai friends and love to try a new Thai place's whenever i can, but this place is no where near authentic thai food and most definitely not worth the trip. Every time I've ordered food there, they've messed my order up, food was cold, have asked them to make items 'Thai Spicy' and not even close to red pepper spicy, hard rice, browned mangos, bitter/watered down thai iced tea, bland food (thai food is not bland) and last but not least the first time i ever ordered food there my food looked like a Cup Of Noodles... All 5 times i've gotten food there i ended up throwing it away :/ Now i hate bashing any establishment but let's be honest Food is the #1 thing you shouldn't screw up, at least to that amount of times! Now focusing on the positive of this place, it has super friendly and nice staff!, a quaint and pretty decor/atmosphere, great location and the place looks clean... they just miss the mark on food :/ .

Best. Thai. Food. Ever. Worth the drive. Great ambiance and the food is to die for. So fresh! Love the lamb gain and papaya salad as well as all of their appetizers. Soups are outstanding and chicken skewers are perfection. Yummy!

This place is hard to review. I'd give somewhere between 3-4 stars. While I wasn't expecting to be blown away by any Thai food found in Frederick, MD, the reviews made me think that maybe this would be different. I have only eaten at one other Thai restaurant in Frederick, and it was just ok. I have, however, eaten at Thai restaurants everywhere from NYC to LA and in between. This place is fine, but a disappointment if you eat a lot of Thai. Seems some of the reviews are from people who "discovered" Thai food by eating here. So my opinion is based on my experiences outside of this restaurant. The prices are high for Thai, but normal for Market Street. Although I enjoyed my meal, I can't justify this being my go-to Thai restaurant in Frederick. I don't even remember what I ordered (which says something), some veg entree with cellophane noodles. I also tried the spring rolls, they were good, delivered in an "artsy" fashion--no tradition here. Also the menu did not list any spicy dishes, nor did it give the option of adding heat-- again not very traditional. And that's fine for the most part. Since we were being non-traditional, I ordered a Tea Martini-- and it was horrible. I usually order sticky rice and mango for dessert, but I was over it by then. I do think the food is better than the other Thai place in Frederick that I tried (twice). 4 stars for a Market Street restaurant, 3 stars for a Thai restaurant.

No wordy review needed. Simply the best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. Hubby and I would drive an hour north to Frederick just to eat there when we lived outside of Annapolis/DC.

just wandered in after discovering that our favorite restaurant in frederick (tajitu, ethiopian formerly just across the street) was closed and had been replaced with a cuban joint offering zero vegetarian options. LOVE the thai iced tea, and it was the biggest serving ever. nicely presented in a huge, heavy glass with the perfect balance of strong smoky tea and coconut milk. i had the green curry with eggplant and tofu and while not nearly spicy enough, it was flavorful, creamy, and piping hot. the vegetables were crisp and colorful and the rice cooked just the way i like it - not sticky or pasty, and i could tell it was freshly made, and hadn't been sitting in a rice cooker for hours and hours. the portions were large, enough left over to take home for dinner. we got there a little after 11:00 a.m. and were the only diners until about 11:45 when it started to fill up. the service was fast, friendly, and efficient. will definitely go back.

SO good. I love this place, has to be one of the best Thai places I've been to. Their pad Thai is definitely the best I've had - it's addicting! All of the flavors are rich and complex. The thai iced tea is great too! And the service, all the servers we've had were great and welcoming and the restaurant served us and another group without hesitation even though they were already closed.

I absolutely love thai food and eat it everywhere that I travel. I searched on yelp to find a good thai restaurant in Frederick and came upon Sumittra. I went there with anticipation of good thai food, but what I found instead was a pretentious shop with very americanized, flavorless, expensive food. It was so inauthentic! The noodle dish I ordered lacked all the spices and flavor that thai cuisine has. It tasted like a very bland soy sauce chinese dish called chow fun...except a really bad one! The papaya salad had absolutely no savory thai flavor, no hint of fish sauce (key ingredient!) or lime (another key ingredient) and was served on a bed of wilted lettuces and not cabbage. There was hardly any papaya and the dish was an abomination to thai papaya salad...the worst I've had in my 10 years of having papaya salad throughout the country and the far east. The soup came in a small cup even though we ordered the bowl. We did complain to the waiter was apologized and said that they "alter" their flavors (or rather make it very bland and inauthentic) in order to appeal to the crowd. I guess since this restaurant has such high reviews that people in Frederick just do not know what good thai food is. We did not finish even half of any of the dishes.. Bottom line: if you are looking for authentic flavorful thai cuisine, do NOT go here. You will get an expensive, bland, inauthentic, low quality food here.

Go here, this is a great addition to Patrick Street. Great food, reasonable prices, friendly staff. Favorites include the Thai BBQ Chicken, Drunken Noodles, Curry Puffs and the Pad Thai. It can get crowded on the weekend, so plan ahead. Carry out lunch is always fast, even if you don't call ahead.

Sumittra is absolutely amazing. I love Thai cuisine and this place far exceeds my expectations. Much of the menu is authentic Thai, which is a huge deal. If I'm in the mood for Thai food, that's exactly what I want to eat! The chef specials are unique and delicious. I love the fantasia duck. There are also, what seems to be, weekly specials that are beautiful and taste awesome! What makes this restaurant really special, is that the servers are some of the best I've ever encountered. They are very accommodating and welcome small children. Much of the time, my toddler son is asleep during the time we dine in, and they make an extra effort to seat us at a booth, in a warmer part of the restaurant, and away from the front door. That is impeccable service and I could not ask for better! Best Thai cuisine and the best staff around! Oh, and...be sure to try the lemongrass iced tea while you're there!

Date night with the husband brought us here. We are always up for a delicious Asian meal and were excited to try this. The ambiance is great. Although it's a tiny place, it wasn't over crowded or too loud on the night we dined (a weekend night). We were able to get a seat right away without a reservation. The servers were very prompt and friendly. Our water glasses were never empty and we were asked how our meal was multiple times throughout the service. We shared one of the appetizer specials. It was a salmon tempura roll and it was very tasty. For entrees, I couldn't resist my usual thai go to of chicken pad thai. The portion size was quite large and I was able to take more than half of it home as leftovers (which were still just as delicious). The taste was delicious and spot on for pad thai. I will say that I don't think there was enough chicken in it- I had to dig for pieces of it. My husband got his usual go to of drunken noodles. He said it was yummy with just the right amount of spicy. Not so spicy that it hurts your mouth to eat it, but spicy enough to give you the right amount of heat. Overall, we were very satisfied with our dining experience at Sumittra and we will definitely be returning in the future!

I recently moved to Frederick, and have not had much luck in finding Thai food. This restaurant has good quality food. I went there only once, but the Larb Gai and Beef Drunken Noodles, and the duck entree were very good. The only thing I would like to add is that their prices are a bit high (the duck was $25, and it was not exceptional or a large portion).

FANTASTIC. We have lived in Frederick for a month and already ordered from here 4 or 5 times. The staff is friendly and the food is very good. Our most recommended dishes would be the shrimp and/or chicken pad thai, chicken Penang (curry), peanut chicken skewers and drunken noodle. Drunken noodle is spicy, without being overpowering. Will continue to order from here.

I was pretty happy with this place. I can't believe it took us so long to try it. I had heard mixed reviews from friends; mainly that the food was good, but the portions were small for the price. It was pricey, but I didn't think ridiculously so and I was comfortably full at the end of the meal. The place is dark and small (it felt right on the line between cozy and cramped). They have a small but interesting selection of bottled beers, including several varieties of Flying Dog (although I recommend the Goose Island Pere Jacques if they have it). We had the chive dumpling appetizer at the recommendation of a friend. They were so tasty; I could have eaten a big plate of them. Honestly, they have so many interesting sounding appetizers; I think I would have been happiest ordering a couple of extra beers and sampling 4-5 different appetizers instead of ordering entrees, mainly because the entrees came out about two minutes after the appetizer plates were cleared away. It would have been nice to have some time to relax between courses. I ordered the duck curry and liked everything about it besides the duck. Roasted duck breast is my "go to" meal if it's on a menu, but chopped up duck in a sauce is something that I've decided I'm not a big fan of, especially when it's gristly like this was and I can't see what I'm eating. My boyfriend ordered one of the fried rice entrees and I liked it, although I wouldn't have ordered it for myself. We'll definitely go back, but I think I'm going to stick with a vegetarian meal.

I went with my daughter to this restaurant. We had a few minute wait before a table was available. Enjoyed Thai iced tea. Are appetizers were fresh and good. My daughter had pad Thai and I had yellow curry duck. The food was great. Great atmosphere. I would recommend reservations

So trying to find a place to accommodate my south eastern Asian family is hard since they always require cuisine that has rice! We always have to fall back on Thai or Chinese. Found this place on yelp and soooo glad we did! My dish was amazing - got the drunken noodles with chicken and it was on point!!! It was very spicy so if your stomach can't handle it, I would go with something else. My brother ordered Jungle curry and it wasn't his favorite, he said it was too spicy and the veggies didn't complement each other well. This place gets busy but our server was very attentive which was a plus. Very narrow restaurant but cool ambience and it does get loud. Overall, I would come back to this place again next time I'm in town!

5 stars for ambiance. 4 stars for the food and service. 1 star for the crazy pouring rain that started one minute prior to leaving. The contemporary decor was very tasteful and felt quite elegant. The menu was well organized so it made it easy to find something you had been craving or if you wished to try something new. Everything was served very warm and fresh and displayed beautifully which made it seem like you were somewhere high class. I had been craving Thai for awhile and was hoping this new restaurant would satisfy, and it sure did!

We've been here four times since it opened and have yet to be disappointed. The last time we went really floored me, though, hence this review. My honey has been gluten-free for 10 years, and when it comes to accommodating his gluten intolerance, thai restaurants are hit or miss. There are so many components in thai food. The balance of spicy, sour, salty, sweet, bitter is delicate; when you remove one, things have a way of going awry. But Sumittra is really good about letting us know what's up. That's why we keep going back. The last time we went, not only did the waitstaff at Sumittra know the menu's gluten-free options right off the bat, they knew them in depth. For anyone else with a food allergy, intolerance, or just plain food preference, you know how great (and unfortunately rare) this is. For a place without a dedicated gluten-free menu, this is impressive. For folks like my beloved, it is an almost-guarantee of future patronage. We love this place and will be sure to return...soon. IMHO, if you are a fan of good thai food and are looking to have your dining experience be more than a transaction, it's definitely worth your time and money.

Happily, this restaurant was open at 9PM on a Monday night! We were driving back from a day trip out to Shenandoah NP and wanted a good place to have a late dinner. Sumittra was a welcome place to find! The interior is stylishly decorated, and the servers were courteous and polite. Any tension that one might have had from the day is soothed by the quiet calm atmosphere. They let us have a few minutes to read over the menu. [There was no "hurry up and order, because we want to close" vibe from them, which I appreciate!] We ordered the Pad Thai with beef and a salmon dish with spicy chili dish. Both were prepared very quickly and presented well. Both dishes were well seasoned and delicious. After so many miles on the highway of few attractive meal choices, I felt fortunate to find this place.

This place is my favorite restaurant in Frederick, and some of my favorite Thai food ever. I know, I know. In Frederick, MD? It's true. Everything I've ordered here, no, everything anyone I know has ordered here has been uniformly excellent. The staff is super nice and friendly. The service is quick, and even though the place is small and frequently crowded, I never seem to have to wait long for a table and the atmosphere is always enjoyable. There's a ton of great vegan/vegetarian stuff on the menu too. (Although I'd love it if they made the veggie/tofu massaman curry a regular menu item instead of just a special!) The takeout is really great too, and the beer list, though slight, is surprisingly great and has some really neat surprises on it too.

A good solid thai restaurant, with nice decor and outdoor seating. I liked that they didn't try to drum up business by going the route of having a lot of chinese and japanese options, but stuck to traditional curries and noodle dishes. Only got to try a small portion of the menu, but I will definitely be back to rate the rest. What I did have was good, but not spectacular. Still, where are you going to go for thai in the area otherwise?

When choosing a restaurant, I embarrassingly tend to overlook the downtown ones. This is doing myself a real disservice because excellent Thai food now exists in Frederick at Sumittra. The restaurant is small but attractive with exposed brick walls that demonstrate the history of the structure. Service is pleasant and prices are a bit inflated over the Thai food I'm used to getting in Montgomery County, but let's face it- they are the only game in town for Thai. The food is lovely- everything that comes out of the kitchen is presented beautifully and the taste tends to match. I've had the curries which have all been great examples of the style (tender meat cooked in rich coconut milk gravy) but what took the restaurant to the next level for me was the Kao Soi noodle soup with shrimp (also with coconut milk curry, but in a bit thinner broth). It was so amazing, I can't wait to return and I will not forget this place because it's downtown again. Although I gravitate to the curry dishes, the noodle dishes (pad thai and what not) are also tasty from what I've tried. Most dishes come with a vegetarian option with just vegetables or tofu for the protein. There are more expensive meat items on the menu (steaks and bbq chicken), I only tried the latter which was a bit dry but had great flavor and presentation. The menu is actually pretty expansive and should offer something for anyone interested in Thai/Asian cuisine. While this does not supplant my favorites in Rockville/Gaithersburg (Thai Farm rises to the top of that list), it is a wonderful place and has given Frederick a worthy Thai restaurant.

Pork& shrimp dumpling appetizer was great- lukewarm in temp. would've been better hot. Hubby's padthai was great- authentic flavors. His meal alone would've accounted 4 stars but My dish was less so- the curry itself was good.. But the rice... Man, the rice... Bleh. I took a whole star off for the rice- First time ever in an Asian restaurant where the rice was gross mush. Hopefully one time fluke.. Will still swing by again for its other flavors- but next time, we will probably stick to noodles.

Ehhh its alright. It is hard to compete in a town with such great restaurants and I was super excited to see a Thai place come in- the result- its underwhelming. The staff is nice, but occasionally I do take out and they always seem to be rushed, stressed and there is no convenient place for me to wait for my food. When I call it in they always tell me 15 minutes. When I go in, sometimes it has been sitting out on the counter and its cold, and sometimes I am standing there waiting for another 10 minutes, which isn't a big deal except there is no place to stand that you don't feel like you are in someones way. So that is the service. The food is ok. Sometimes its good, sometimes its just alright, and once they didn't put any chicken in my chicken dish, so that is a problem. There are many better places to eat in Frederick, but if you are craving Thai this will do.

I've been to almost all of the Thai restaurants in the greater Baltimore/DC area and I have to tell you, I keep finding myself making the trek out to Frederick to this excellent place! Sumittra Thai is a wonderful restaurant with a modern yet warm decor, friendly service, and above all fresh delicious Thai food! The menu here is as extensive as any other restaurant, filled with classic dishes and innovative dishes alike. Each dish I have ordered is freshly prepared with fresh meats and a high quality of ingredients. If you are a true lover of Thai food, please give this awesome place a try!

Tony and I dined at Sumittra, a Thai restaurant in downtown Frederick Maryland. The place has tables for about 60-65 people and is set with a contemporary design with melon colored walls and pillars and exposed brick. We started our meal with Tod Mun Pla - spicy fish cakes (four of them) that has a red curry paste and is served with a sweet chili sauce and chopped peanuts ($8). They were tasty. For our second appetizer, I selected one of their Sumittra specials, the Peking Duck Roll - crispy duck wrapped in an Asian pancake (also with cucumber and scallions) and is served with a hoisin sauce. The sauce was the perfect sweet balance against the rich duck flavor. ($9) One of our favorite Thai dishes is Prik Glua. We used to order it all the time at Thai place about 40 minutes from home. We've never seen it on any menu at the other Thai places in Frederick so we were pleasantly surprised. We selected the shrimp, although you can order pork, chicken, steak, seafood, or tofu & Vegetable. This dish is an explosion of flavors. The shrimp (eight large) are lightly battered and then sauteed with a chili and garlic sauce. While not as hot/spicy as the ones we've had in the past, the mix of flavors are wonderful. Rice is served with this dish. ($18). The restaurant was pretty full and on the noisy side (small place) but I could tell everyone was enjoying their food and their dinner friends. Service was fine and quick, and with friendly smiles. When we were their, they didn't have their liquor license but was told by the end of June they should have it. In the meantime people BYOB. This saved on our dining bill. Prices are reasonable, although I found the seafood and shrimp selections to be a little pricey. I saw lots of other tasty looking dishes and nice size portions too. I look forward to returning here soon. This is a keeper!

Big Fan of Summitra and I am happy Frederick has it. Every time I have been there the food has always been delicious and I bring my family when They come into town and the love it too. New years eve fixed menu was exceptional and the price was very reasonable. If they are going to have restaurant week there I suggest going because the food for the price will be worth it. one of my favorites is Kao Soi : Northern Thai style yellow curry noodle soup with chicken- so yummy!

Hard to think of this fabulous restaurant as Thai. The Peking duck roll was perfect, the massaman curry was great and actually had large pieces of beef, I was very pleasantly surprised. Gonna take you down to Thai town!! Wasn't sure what to expect from Thai food in Frederick, MD but I was very impressed. Went to eat with a group of friends & we shared several dishes. The Rock Shrimp, Pad Thai, & Drunken Noodles were outstanding! The Pad Prik Pao & Pad Pak were also very good. However, none of us cared much for the Garden Roll. They also had some really good & unique beers although you can not find them on their menu.

Another good meal here tonight, glad I made a reservation because the place was busier than the last time I came (maybe due to Chinese new year) and OMG it took forever for someone/hostess to even greet us, and another couple had been waiting before us (even they felt the white foyer wall was making things awkward and a bit tight). Although I do like that when you finally do get service here that everyone takes part in waiting, busing, and serving at any given time so you're not waiting around for 1 person in particular throughout your meal. We def preferred the kanom jeeb over the por pia appetizer as the 3 long and thin spring rolls didn't have much filling, we both felt the sauce for them was weird.. kinda like kyro syrup and it definitely didn't look like it had any chili's in it. I had the chicken panang which was good (not sure I'd say 'great' but at least my chicken wasn't overcooked this time) and the plate was awkwardly big as it was 1/4 the size of our 2-seater table, and the dish says it has kaffir lime leaves... it was just one leaf on top (seemed more like a garnish). If the dish was any spicier it wouldn't had been for me, although for those that prefer things really hot than let the staff know when ordering. I think I did enjoy there pad thai a bit more the last time I came. The Thai tea was great although I wouldn't say I'm an aficionado on the stuff. The place is also good for vegans..at least the vegan lady sitting next to us was really enjoying her food..we basically chimed into her whole convo since the other tables are really close together in the back (the tables are maybe a foot apart). They currently are offering a Valentines Day special dinner for v-day only so, if you don't have plans yet you should make a reservation and give this place a try!

Amazing food in a wonderful location. Worth a wait. The good: Food, ambiance, location, prices The bad: small especially for groups 5 or more, bathroom location can be confusing We showed up here and were told a 15 minute wait that turned into about 25 minutes but the food won me over. I don't know if the wait increase my taste buds or if it was all the excess of sweets and American comfort foods that made this one of the best Thai places I have ever eaten. I ordered the Chicken Green Curry with Eggplant at Thai Spicy. The flavor was perfect with a sweet curry that had a wonderful spicy kick. i also tasted Pad Thai which was very good. The Tuna Tartare was a special and I enjoyed that as well. My table ordered two other dishes that did not disappoint. No one at my table was disappointed and the food was demolished. I had a few bites leftover but that was due to my eating of the other plates. You can easily share an appetizer and entree between two people and neither one walking away hungry. The wait time was a little slow but once you taste the food, you are glad they take their time for quality. I would try this place again. I am not from Frederick but I know they have a gem in Sumittra. Almost all of our plates were $13. If you like seafood with your Thai then this place could get a little expensive.

Friendliest waitress I've had in a while. Ordered green curry with chicken and boyfriend ordered pad see eew with chicken. Huge portions of incredible food. Only complaint was that the chicken in my curry was not that moist and seemed a bit tough yet rubbery but the curry and veggies were so amazing that it totally made up for the chicken.

While Frederick has boasted more than a few Thai restaurants over the years, few can compare with the atmosphere and quality of this latest addition to the local food scene. And given that there has not been any place to grab Thai downtown since Cafe Kyoko closed in 2007, Sumittra Thai Cuisine brings a much-needed palette of exotic flavor. The light and airy atmosphere of the dining room and the fresh and flavorful food make this place a top flight choice for authentic southeast Asian fare. The extensive menu offers an array of options that can be prepared with your choice of meat, seafood, or tofu. And there are plenty of vegan/vegetarian options as well. Top-notch appetizers we have tried thus far include a magnificent papaya salad with a ginger-miso dressing that really sets it apart, chicken satay with one of the best peanut sauces I may have ever tried, and wonderful duck egg rolls that are bursting with wild game flavor. Being a spice fiend, I gravitated quickly to the Ka-Prow, which is fueled by basil and hot chilies. I've had this dish once with tofu and once with chicken and the tofu was the better as it absorbed the full range of flavors. I've also had a chance to try their Pad Thai, which is sort of the American bellweather for Thai food, and it is quite good. I just think their menu offers more daring and rewarding choices. My daughter is a sucker for the passion fruit lemonade, which is a tad on the sweet side but quite tasty. I'm duly impressed by the fact that their water is clearly filtered, which likely makes all of their drinks taste better. Including, "just water." Service is quick and transparent, even during busy hours. Presentation of the food is very good, with lots of clever touches of flavor and color. And while the prices may be a tad higher than other Thai joints in the area, the value for the dollar is rock solid with many dinner options for under $15. Bottom line, this is a great new downtown food destination for both locals and visitors.

Good food, good service. When the waitress checked our IDs for the alcohol we ordered, she realized it was one of our birthdays and without even asking, brought out a complimentary dessert for our table. Highly recommend.

I love Thai food sooo much! This place is great! Fantastic service, beautiful decor and lovely menu! The Thai Iced Teas were HUGE....like big gulp size! I know this should not be exciting, but when your mouth is on fire from amazing thai food, a big gulp of thai iced tea is SO GREAT compared to a small swig. You know something is good when the husband and wife are occupying territories of the plate. "That's my half of the ahi! That's my last wonton chip!" We had the ahi tartare appetizer from the daily special menu and used the wonton chips to boarder off our section of the amazing dish. It was so yummy and refreshing! The Tom Yum soup was very good, but could have been spicier. I forgot to request spicy, and my experience on the east coast has been that you always have to ask - they don't just spice things up without asking here. The duck curry was amazing and full of surprises! There were grapes and pineapple in the sauce, which went perfectly with the rich duck. There wasn't a kids menu or any affordable options for kids to eat, so the 6 YO had an $11 fried prawn appetizer. I know this is kind of nutty, but she loves friend shrimp, and it made the meal special for her too. We will definitely be back to this place! Highly recommend it!

Had reservations for Saturday night. The place was packed but we were Seated right away. Service was friendly and patient...we talked forever before looking at our menus. Everyone enjoyed the three apps we shared and their meals. I will say if you are looking for a strong Mai Tai, this is the place. Yummy but deadly.

One of those places you feel like you're paying for the decor not the food! Food came out REALLY fast. Fresh?? I should of asked the portion size but really ...$9 for ONE small duck wrap cut in half! It was just ok. My husband ordered a chicken dish and that also came out super fast and we discovered why ...a few of the chicken pieces were raw in the middle!! We'll never go there again. There was barely any customers so it wasn't like they had to rush cook it. We'll stick to being regulars at Bangkok Thai Kitchen.

Sumitra is a pleasantly average Thai restaurant in lovely downtown Frederick. The food is more 3.5 stars, but the service, prices, and location combine to make it a 4. There are better Thai restaurants out there, but not in Frederick.

A friend of mine who grew up in Thailand brought me here, all the way from Towson. I have to admit that I was skeptical, since Frederick seems like an out of the way area. But this place was exceptional. I love Thai food and eat it frequently (and have for many years, in many different restaurants, in many different states) and this place is on par with the best places I've found anywhere. Refreshingly authentic, wonderfully fresh, and they serve some of the harder to find dishes. I am going to go back, even though I live far away. We had the Tom Kha, which might be my favorite Thai dish. This one is excellent, with lots of bright citrusy flavor balanced by creamy coconut. Mmmm... Also sampled the drunken noodles (this is a good indicator of how good a Thai restaurants is going to be, in my opinion.) they were excellent, as was the pad Thai. Flavorful noodles, rich, caramelized pan sauce, crunchy yet tender vegetables. But the absolute highlight of the meal, For me, was the kao soi. I have had a hard time finding this dish and it is often mistaken for a regular yellow curry. It's not. It's coconuty and slightly sweet with crispy wonton noodles, vegetables, chicken, peanuts, and long noodles ( similar to the type used in Chinese lo mein. It is under the noodle soups category and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The papaya salad, wonton soup, and vegetable/noodle soups all came highly recommended by my companions. On top of it all, the hospitality was lovely. We cannot wait to go back.

Well we finally tried Sumitra and I am glad we did. Went on a Friday night and they were busy but the service was great and attentive. The chive dumpling appetizer was great. I ordered the Kow Pad Subparod and really enjoyed it my girlfriend ordered the Gang Ped Yang and found the duck not great but the curry was really good. We will definitely try again.

We don't get into Sumittra that often, but we should. Went on a whim the other night and had a really good meal. Had the Tom Kha and the drunken noodles (1 level of hot). It was a little better than a Tara Thai. Best thai in Frederick, hands-down. You may be disappointed if you eat thai DC, NY, LA, etc. Still good though.

So I had been anticipating the opening of this place for weeks, driving by the storefront all the time (before they opened) like some hungry stalker. I was so desperate for a good Thai restaurant to open in downtown Frederick. Well, the glutton fairy must've been listening. Since it opened last year, I've bee there a BUNCH of times, sometimes twice a week. Everything there is good, and the service is always excellent. My favorites are the tom yum soup, and any of their ka prao dishes. Sooo yummy & spicy and it's affordable. Best Thai I've ever had in Maryland, hands down! Their por pia (spring rolls) are something to write home about too. And their drunken noodles just make your mouth water. 5 Stars!!!

I stopped by this place on my way to Virginia after my sis did some yelping for me. Easy to find, and in the setting of old-town east coast style. The service was quick and very friendly. I was happily surprised that they were giving out free appetizer rolls. I had the Friday lunch special. The waitress gave me an excellent reading on the heat of the dish (something other Thai places seem to get wrong) and the portion size was great. The meal was very delicious!!!!! For just a quick visit in Frederick, definitely a winner.

The food would have qualify for 2.5-3 stars but it was the lack of attention to details and customer's well being that I am giving the 2 Stars. After spending over $200 in a party order, I ended up w/ spilled curry all over my pants and shoes because no one took the time to carefully package my aluminum traps. Man, I was upset. To make matters worse, I was not offered any compensation for the mess and I got the sense from the staff that I had done something wrong because they had to clean up their front steps? WTF??? I had to walk back a decent distance to show them the mess and was kind enough not to step inside the restaurant to avoid causing them more mess to clean. This is not the first time I encounter friendly service in a Thai restaurant only to discover later how indifferent/uncaring the staff are toward the customers. I don't like fake people, and inconsiderate people will never earn my business. On the food part, just your average mediocre Thai food. I have had good Thai food w/ the right balance of spice and flavor that really lights up one's appetite. This is not it. If you are a true curry lover, sorry but the curry here will disappoint.

Good food, good service. Vegan-friendly. The server told us even the curries can be made without fish sauce, which is great. We had the green curry with tofu and vegetables and the praram tofu (the one with broccoli and peanut sauce). Both were great. Our server was really friendly and prompt. Pleasant, quiet ambiance. Overall good experience. But I was a bit surprised to pay more here than I do at Thai places in DC!

Yummmy! Took the kids for take out tonight and we ended up sitting outside in 90 degree weather for dinner. We enjoyed the spring rolls, chicken pad Thai and wonton soup. Amazing! I also had a Thai iced tea and was in heaven. The service was nice and they were so accomodating to kids.

This was the best Thai experience I've had! We were originally going to go out for Vietnamese food but I was craving Tom Kha soup so we came here instead. The Tom Kha was the best I've ever had. The broth was so 'coconutty' and the chunks of mushroom and chicken were perfect. I ordered the Pad See Eew with chicken for my dinner and it was equally delicious. I love those wide rice noodles and these were done perfectly. There was a good amount of broccoli and chicken in the dish as well. One of my kids had Won Ton Soup and Pad Thai and the other had the Tofu Soup and Pineapple Fried Rice and they both enjoyed their meals. My husband had the Som Tum salad and then a special for dinner. The salad was good, but the special was just OK. Since we were enjoying our dining experience so much we decided to try dessert. We all split the Kanom Tuay and the Trio Sorbetto and they were both fantastic. Needless to say, we will be returning here sometime in the very near future!

Arjun and I always eat at a Thai restaurant on vacation. If the vacation is only 2 hours long, we will find a Thai restaurant. Our first date was at a Thai restaurant ... maybe we're secretly trying to recreate that night :-) Okay! On to the important stuff. This place is a gem. The larb gai was perfectly spiced (a liiittle salty, but I will forgive it) with mint, lime, and green chili. The waitress brought out the chicken satay for another table, and I immediately ordered it. It looked too good to pass up! It was an excellent decision. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the peanut sauce was smooth, but with a few crunchy bites (so you know it was just made!). Arjun ordered the 'Bangkok Delight' with rice noodles, scallops, shrimp, squid, and mussels. Usually that much seafood in one dish makes me sick, but this was PERFECT! It tasted like home-cooked Thai food ... not overpowering, perfectly seasoned, and perhaps a little different each time. I ordered the Green Chicken Curry. I always order this dish at a new Thai restaurant ... it's the only way you can tell if they are authentic! And of course, it was brilliant. You know when a broth can stand alone? The broth was rich but not too rich, hot but not too spicy, and exactly what you'd crave on a rainy night. The eggplant, chicken, and bell peppers in the dish were well-soaked in the sauce as well. All in all, the meal was perfect. In an effort to exercise portion control, both of us practiced immense self restraint and packed half of each dish. I cannot WAIT for leftovers night!!!

Ok ..so I thought I was a regular but apparently not . Tonight was the first night in over multiple visits I have been displeased with the service and the product from this establishment. First, we sat 20 minutes and waited for a simple appetizer, then how does one eat curry without a spoon for 10 mins ? And not to mention it had a very distinct darker color to it indicating it had been sitting in the window for quite awhile. Following that a lull between refreshments of yet another 15mins go by.. A manager is requested and yet the bill comes with the consolation of 10 % off. I guess they do not have any mangement that is willing to take responsibility for that product. Needless to say I no longer have anything positive to say in regards to this establishment.

I am glad to see a Thai restaurant in downtown Frederick. My favorite dishes here are Pad Pak and Pad Thai. Both are delicious, and if you ask for it hot - they truly make it HOT! All the ingredients are fresh and the sauces are delicious. I especially love the fresh vegetables that are plentiful unlike many other thai places I have been where they are stingy with the broccoli. This evening I also tried the Green Salad with sesame dressing at Sumittra. The dressing was delicious over fresh greens with cucumbers and tomatoes. Very refreshing salad followed by great pad thai. The thai iced tea is a delicious treat - prepare for something sweet, if you order it. They also have a variety of other drinks on the menu that sound refreshing. Wine and beer are available there now as well. The atmosphere is very appealing. I really enjoy eating in here even though thai is one of my favorite take out foods!

My wife and I were visiting Frederick, Md. Before leaving home, we read restaurant reviews about various restaurants. Sumittra's reviews were excellent without exception so we wanted to give it a try. The food and service were superlative. I cannot remember the names of the dishes we ordered although one was a kind of curry soup. The flavors were wonderful. Our waitress was exceptionally friendly. The restaurant is on Frederick's main street in easy reach of everything. It's simply a great place to eat.

My husband and I shared a mussel appetizer and the crispy duck entrée. Both were delicious. We got the duck during our last visit. Spicy and memorable. The duck is so good, it's going to be difficult to try anything else....bummer... LOL!!

So far I've only tried the Pad Thai with Shrimp and though it is really tasty, the price isn't great for what you get. They might need to work on pricing before coming out with their new menu (May 2011). Hopefully that's why the current menu is only temporary. I think it's really good so far. I heard opening day was a little hectic and didn't flow as well as it should but seems they worked out the bugs for now. Go and give it a try!

We tried Sumittra for the first time last night and it gets my vote as the best Thai restaurant in Frederick. The Yum Nuer (Thai beef salad) was outstanding. Plenty of fresh lettuce, cilantro and beef in a spicy lime dressing. The Panang Curry Chicken was delicious. The coconut milk in the sauce was well balanced with other flavors. The Ka-Prao Shrimp came with a nice stir fry of vegetables. They listed it as very spicy but they toned it down when we asked. The service was prompt and friendly, and the décor was attractive. This will definitely be our first choice for Thai from now on.
