OK generic Mexican food. Not the cleanest place. They don't seem to like it if you don't order from the bar. They charged me for a refill of Coke. Stay away from the deserts--freezer burn.

5 stars for the guacamole, the fried ice cream, and the service. The rest of the meal was just ok. Chips and salsa were average. Fried plantains weren't as sweet as I've had elsewhere, but for $4.99, they were priced well. Vegetable fajitas were bland. Yellow rice was uninspired, refried beans were soupy. Food came out fast. I notice a lot of better reviews, not sure if I went on an off day. I ordered the same meal at both of their sister restaurants; it was way better at Cacique. I'd come back for the fried ice cream. They serve it on a plate on top of a cinnamon sopapilla!

I've eaten at this restaurant a number of times over the years. The food is great. Prices are good and the menu offers a lot of choices. Love the enchiladas and fajitas. The only time I had to wait was on a Saturday night and it was not long. They do take reservations, but you really do not need to make one if you are coming with only a few people. Service is very good. There was only one instance when my meal was so-so. I had ordered a steak fajita dish on night. It was mostly fat, which is not normal. I mentioned this to the wait after I took a bite, looked at the steak. He took the dish back, got a new one minus all of the fat with no problem. I'll be back again.

I have to do this unfortunately because I use to really like Mexicali Cantina, but this place has gone down hill, in my opinion. For Fathers' Day, we ordered two beef fajitas among other dishes. The fajitas were unremarkable to say the least and disapointing. The beef was overcooked, dry and the meat was bland. In the past, the beef was well marinated with a Tex-Mex sauce and was evident with excellent flavor. This time not so. I didn't even bother to finish my order. My son had the same thing and I also found his dish to be bland. On top of that, the service was terrible. our waitress was nowhere to be found. She would show up every 30 minutes or so to check on us. She was a very nice lady; however, she seemed to forget that we were even there. And the fact that it was Fathers Day cannot be used as an excuse, the place was practically empty. I'll give this place another try based on past experience, but things really need to improve. I must say however, the chips and salsa are outstanding. The chips are fresh, light, and crispy. The salsa is rich and zesty with abundant flavor. My margarita was also very good.

Went for lunch - no lunch menu but it's the weekend so maybe that's why. The table setting included a saucer at each place, two of which were obviously dirty. They were swapped from a nearby empty table, for another patron to deal with I guess. The chips and salsa came, and the chips were 'old' tasting. Had the spinach enchiladas, which were good. For the record this place is so similar to Cacique I'd just rather go there.

Ahhhhh, my beloved little "hole in the wall." Don't let the sketchy strip mall deter you, this place is a gem. Upon entering, you'll be a bit confused; sometimes I seat myself before the staff greets me but if you're not so brave & more patient; wait a couple minutes. My first time here I had the Carne Asada tacos which were the bomb.com , excuse the slang for lack of a more fitting term. Second time I had a salmon dish which was DELICIOSO, I'm very picky about consuming seafood and the manager was very knowledgable about where the salmon came from (wild caught Alaskan) *thumbs up. Third time here I had two different seafood entrees (pictured) and boy was I impressed. Fresh seafood beautifully cooked in delectable sauces, what more could one ask for??? Lobster was fresh, mussels were plump and juicy, scallops were sweet and fat. 5 star quality. Also had the "Mussels Mexicali Style" app and it was GOOOOOOOOD! Complimentary chips and dip are awesome, (warm chips + cold saucy salsa = yummy) for dessert I ALWAYS get the Flan; thus far the best Mexican flan I have had in the entire DMV; hands down. Perfect balance of creamy, smooth, sweet and caramelly. I'm particularly picky about customer service and I must say; the staff here knows how to take care of hungry patrons.

Went there on Saturday after a movie with my wife. I ordered chicken fajitas and my wife ordered Shrimp. Both orders came out and both were shrimp. After about 15 minutes my chicken fajitas came out. Old, cold dry chicken on top of under cooked sliced onions. One bight and spit it out. I had a hard time getting a re fill drink as well. Bill came out to 40 plus dollars. I will never go back there again. Note: Not crowded at all.

I love the drinks and atmosphere at Mexicali Cantina. They by far serve the best margaritas in the city and have multiple rooms with different feels. Its a date night staple. The food doesn't let you down either, though it is more your standard mexican faire.

GREAT food here and VERY affordable. We love ordering the huge pitchers of sangria and fajitas! The fried ice cream is also amazing. We love coming here and feel welcome each and every time. We also watched the fireworks from their patio this 4th of July which was magical. Thank you staff at Mexicali!!! We will see you soon for more fajitas and sangria :)

Favorite mexican place in Frederick. We frequent here whenever we want mexican but also had our wedding rehearsal dinner here. The rehearsal was very affordable, they made us limited menus and it was all around a great experience. Love the enchiladas, queso and guacamole. Margaritas are delicious too! Lost one star as something the service isn't the best but the food is great!

Amazing food!! Had fajitas with enough left over for 2 more meals. Must try shrimp appetizer.. The sauce makes you want to lick the bowl clean. Service was awesome and manger was very friendly. Will def be back soon!

On a super busy night, my mother in law was cruising around town looking for someplace that does take-out. She stumbled upon Mexicali Cantina, and *BAM* our first favorite restaurant in Frederick has been identified! We got a Mexicali Superior (shrimp, chicken and steak fajitas), the Reynosa Platter (bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalepanos, plus chicken and steak fajitas) and a Combinaton Fajitas... And they were all amazing. The meats were cooked perfectly and well-seasoned, the shrimp was LARGE and everything tasted fresh. The chicken and steak held up well as left-overs as well, which was great because the portions were way too big to eat all at once. We got black beans, pinto beans and salsa on the side, and the only thing that I really didn't care for was the salsa- it was pretty tasteless. We did get a very large plastic grocery bag full of chips to go with it, which was kind of weird... Nevertheless, my MIL reported that the inside was quite nice (white table clothes on the tables) and that she enjoyed sitting at the bar and waiting for the food. So that's my story. We'll be headed back for take-out or maybe even to sit down if we ever find a good babysitter up here.

We had a great meal and especially enjoyed the house Margaritas, the salsa and chips and the Chile relenos. Attentive service too.

This is not your average Mexican restaurant. The decor is classy and the menu, although it does include all the standards, there are many excellent unique options as well. The seafood omelet is exquisite. The service is impeccable. You are seated immediately, served chips and good salsa right away and your server will never let your glass go empty. This is my favorite local Mexican restaurant.

I usually dont write bad reviews, but i had to let people know about the food! NOT EDIBLE! I stopped eating after one bite, the worst part is the reviews on here! I must say before i go on that i did order a quite authentic dish and it was carry out: a chile relleno, chicken enchilada and spanish rice. Let me start with the chili relleno, you cant microwave that and expect it to cook, the chile was super crunchy and hard, not the way it is supposed to be!!!! Chicken enchilada: what kind of sauce is that??...the chicken tasted as if it was atleast 7 days old, just gross!! The spanish rice, the easiest thing anyone can make, and yet just horrible!!! The overall dish was the nasiest thing ive ever had!! Even if i dont like something ill still eat it but to not be able to go past a spoonful tells you alot. I mean if you the dish isnt good please take if off the menu!!!! Now that i vented, my bf had the acapulco steak he said it wasnt bad but not great. He rated it a 4 or 5/10. The chips and salsa were great....that ended up being my dinner. The owner or manager was super nice so i feel horrible for this review but im sorry it was just BAD!

Visiting family in Frederick this past weekend I drove by this place several times and as church service ran late on Sunday I thought we'd try it for lunch - that was after we discovered Gladchuck's nearby is closed on Sundays - too bad for them - they lost at least one lunch customer that day. Service was not spectacular and I agree with a couple other reviews on this. We had to find our way to the seating area as it isn't clear when you walk into the foyer where to go. There was a birthday party due north of us that had several servers tied up. To our East was an empty dining room and to the West was the hallway for coats and restrooms. It's a big place that includes outdoor seating in warmer weather. The secret was to wind past the restroom hallway to the bar area where at least on Sundays is the majority of the seating. It was very nice to see several Latino families dining in there so I knew we'd be at least ok at that point. I finally grabbed a server and he told us to take any seat - they need a sign for that... There was a discussion in Spanish near our table about who was going to be serving us - I speak Spanish so I overheard it clearly - fortunately no foul language was used - just seemed to be an honest discussion. We too got dinner menus at 12:45pm - very odd since it appears they have lunch menus. The one downside to this seating area is the extremely noisy and busy blenders - they need to invest in some mufflers (which do exist). Every time these beasts fired up we had to stop our conversation. Chips and salsa were decent - they were those really thin chips; I prefer the thick ones but the salsa had some kick to it which is a nice change. It's not a roasted style salsa - almost the typical one you get at any of these places plus the extra kick. The decor/ambience is actually surprising - very clean and tastefully appointed. As I put on the caption of the photo I provided - it's not the typical strip-mall taco joint you see in everywhere America. The menu also sports some very nice options that other reviewers pointed out. We weren't 'starving' so we didn't have anything exotic or big - wife got soft tacos with chicken. She doesn't like anything spicy and was pleased with her choice - it was more than she was able to finish (3 tacos total, with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, Spanish rice, and refried beans). My fish tacos were a little wet and I prefer my fish grilled in these - it seemed steamed to me but the amount of fish (Tilapia of course) was very generous. My combo came with about a tablespoon of guacamole - but that was really great - almost as good as my own homemade. It also came with beans on the side (not refried) which were good and a different kind of Spanish rice than my wife got - this was really good as well. The sides were spectacular. Service was virtually nonexistent once we got our meals - no follow-up - no refills on drinks offered and the incessant hum of the blenders the entire time we were there. I'm giving this a 3 because the menu was broader than most of these kinds of joints and the food was good. I'd go here again for dinner for sure on an empty stomach. They lost points for service all around and weren't busy enough to remotely justify that problem. As many have mentioned this they need to work on this for sure. It's just nice to see a "Mexican" restaurant with Latino families actually eating in it for a change. It is always a good mark of any ethnic eatery when people of that ethnicity patronize the place. I guess I should try one of their blended margaritas next time too - apparently a lot of other people were when we visited!!!!!!!!! ;) Not remotely humbly submitted this day, D. Food Snob, Ph.D.

The food was decent. Fish tacos were a bit under cooked. The re-fried beans are good. My biggest disappointment was the margarita I had. The drink was too sweet and was not fresh. Service is really good and fast. Value is decent. Stick with the beer.

Mexicali... is excellent! I've eaten there many times over the years and I still have no complaints. The food is always tasty- starting with the warm chips and salsa to wonderful margaritas to warm, well proportioned food! Mexicali, keep it up and thanks for being in business here in Frederick!

For reasonably priced, decent Tex-Mex food close to where I live, this place can't be beat. I've tried a few other Mexican restaurants in the area, and this is the one I keep coming back to. I like the margaritas--in a don't taste that strong, but certainly pack a punch, sort of way. The fajitas are great, and the Tamal de Elote (which I'm sure I consistently mispronounce) is a newly discovered favorite. I also really love the atmosphere - each dining room is decorated slightly differently--in a kitschy, but-not-over-the-top sort of way that sets it slightly apart.

We used to be regulars at MC. We had a very bad experience one night, and they made every effort to make it up to us. We decided to become regulars again. Then we went one night (early September, 2013), and wanted to sit outside. There was a large table of Spanish-speaking men, who were clearly drunk when we got there. They were unbelievabley loud and rude. Some people left- managemnet didn't seem to care. They began to smoke in spite of the "no smoking" signs. They continued to order round after round, and get louder and louder. They all finally got in their vehicles, totally drunk, and drove off. Lovely, we've never been back, and I'm sure the others in our party will not return either. I hope it was worth to them.

The best service that I had @ a restaurant was here at Mexicalli Cantina. I believe Lauren was our waitress: the nicest waitress we've ever had. She was super-nice to our 3 children: showed them how to fold napkins the way that they do. We went back a month later: requested her and had great service a 2nd time. Our kids loved her so much: they all hugged her before we left & told here that they'd miss her. We go back just because of her. Ask for Lauren if you're going in any time soon. Also, the food was fantastic.

Don't judge a book by it's cover, this quote goes a long way here. You walk through the threshold to a completely skewed ambiance, and that's a good thing. We came at lunch time and the place was pretty empty (freezing too). The service was rather sub-par, we had to wait quite awhile for our food, check, and even refills when we were one of the only three groups there. The food is what you come here for, the complimentary salsa and chips are phenomenal. Salsa could be a little more chunky, but that's a preference, the chips come out warm and are (hopefully) made in house! Ordering the lunch special, The shrimp and Avocado salad was pretty good, but the plate was mostly spinach... My company ordered two cheese enchiladas which she absolutely adored. Also, The black beans here are the best around (i'd say). Overall, the food and the venue are what you come here for.

I have been to most of the mexican restaurants in Frederick and this is the one that has delivered the closest to what I expect out of a mexican restaurant. Is it in a weird location with a sketchy sign? Sure. But don't let that deter you! Yes, when you walk in, there is not a host/hostess at the stand, but there was a sign indicating where my group should seat ourselves. The margaritas are strong, the fajitas and carne asada are great, and the chips and salsa were also good. The service was good enough, nothing to really complain about. Some other reviewers have said that it's overpriced, but I feel like almost all of the mexican restaurants in the area are overpriced and this is the only one I left feeling like I got my money's worth. The quality and taste of the food was good, they didn't charge us for extra sides of sour cream, I had a lot of food left over to bring home with me, and I didn't wreak of food when I left, which happens at a lot of other places I go to. Will definitely be back.

One of my go-to spots for the Mexican itch in Frederick. Usually stick to the traditional fare and combo fajitas but the Paella and Lomo Salteado are quite nice as well. Cheap Dos Equis XX on draft and good 'ritas if the mood strikes. Ask for their house hot sauce. It'll light your tongue on fire. Hurts so good. Their house salsa and chips are also a nice freebie. If you have room, hit up the tres leches for dessert. Muy bueno.

The dining room looks much more upscale than the food. Although the restaurant is owned by the same people that own Mariachi and multiple other restaurants in the area, Mexicali Cantina is their worst. The guacamole tasted like the grocery store pre-prepared avocado paste without seasoning. The dishes tasted like mush with bland brown sauce. Hard taco shells were dissolved and mushy from the juices coming out of the overcooked, poorly seasoned meats. Overall, there are much better choices for Mexican food in the area.

This place is so hit or miss; we just can't afford to go there and risk a bad meal/poor service anymore. There are several items on their menu that I love because I feel like I can have a somewhat healthy meal while my boyfriend orders his typical gut bomb. I like their mariscada, ceviche and avocado salad. Their chips and salsa are good (but can't you say that about most Mexican restaurants?). My boyfriend got the camarones el espeton (bacon wrapped scallops) one time and the bacon was visibly raw. We couldn't believe it was served to us. Every time I want to go back now, he says that he can't get the vision out of his head and I can't say that I blame him. When their food is good, it's very good. You just never know how it's going to be and they're not cheap (~$15.00 for just about everything but basic burritos and enchiladas). I'm a stickler for good sangria and theirs is some of the most unpredictable I've ever had. Usually it's very tasty but with very little alcohol in it, sometimes it's absolutely perfect and other times it's so strong with cheap liquor that I feel like my breath would catch on fire if you lit a match in front of my mouth. Quality control, people! As for the service...I don't know if we just don't look like big tippers; we dress pretty casual, but we've both waited tables and typically leave 20%. On several occasions, we've had wait staff look over and see that we needed refills, etc and just completely ignored us to take care of other tables. The service seems to be better in the bar area if you can get over the horrendous décor. I don't know what the walls are supposed to be painted to resemble, but it looks like dark red fake wood wall paneling. I feel like I'm hanging out in somebody's basement rec room.

My boyfriend found a bone in his chicken taco. Need I say more? Overpriced for what it is and service was strange. Waiter showed us photos of his girlfriend.

Good real Mexican food. The taco salad was good and different. The wait we sat right away, but the wait for drinks, food and even our change took forever, it should not take 20 minutes for change so we can tip the server.

I was surprised to hear this restaurant is owned by the same people who own Mariachi, because honestly, this place was awful! It's dark, the service was slow (there were two other tables w/ people when we went) and the food was overpriced. I had ONE chicken enchilada at lunchtime- it was 8 bucks! That's crazy. I left feeling super disappointed in our meal.

    (2)
  • James H.

Overpriced for the food quality. Not sure the white linen table justifies the cost of a meal- or needed for this kind of restaurant. Chicken tasted like it had been precooked and then microwaved for my lunch. The margarita mix tasted chemically and store bought. The plus was the homemade habanero sauce which was quite good. Not quite a recommendation for Kitchen Nightmares but its close.

The restaurant has a nice decor. The salsa and chips were good, a little spicy but not too much. My daughter enjoyed them so I would say it is kid-friendly overall. She had the chicken burrito with rice and re-fried beans. She liked the burrito but had a bit too much cheese, and also liked the yellow rice. I ordered the carne asada fajita. The flank steak was cooked nicely, sorta medium. But before I assembled a fajita, I tried the steak separately. If I were only reviewing the steak, I would've given 4 stars. The juices on the plate from the steak were delicious. The waitress was nice. What I did not care for was the re-fried beans, which were bland and runny, nor did I care for the beans that came with my dish. I'll definitely go back.

I have eaten at this restaurant on numerous occassions. Overall the food is not bad. The customer service is very inconsistant. This past Friday, I visited the restaurant for lunch. After waiting over 5 minutes to be seated, the waiter handed me a dinner menu (it was 2pm). I requested a lunch menu, and that was the last I saw of him. After waiting another 15 minutes for him to return, I left. PROS: - some of the dishes are really prepared well. - clean, nicely decorated. CONS: - the added expense (over the local competition) is only worth it for the few dishes they prepare well. The rest are extremely over-priced. - poor customer service.

  • Laylah G.

I honestly don't understand how this restaurant can get any reviews better than two stars, especially when there are so many other (better) options for Mexican food in Frederick to compare it to. The good: -Very clean -Nice decor -The Spanish rice was delicious -Nice waitress who checked in on us. Too bad the food we order ranged from bland to gross to "something is just not right tasting". Too bad the waitress who checked in with us wasn't our actual waitress, who seemed to have trouble hearing our orders. Maybe because it was so loud in there. Too bad the vegetarians in our group only seemed to have two different entree options total. Too bad the bathrooms, while very clean, had no clear way to give me any of the the paper towels that seemed to be trapped inside the automatic dispenser, doomed to forever taunt you by being visible but unobtainable. My main issue was the quality of food versus the price you pay. Based on what we paid ($60 total for 4 people before tip), I would have liked a satisfying meal, with plenty of flavor and some leftovers. Without doubt, the spinach enchiladas I ordered were the blandest thing I have ever been served in a Mexican restaurant. I only finished one of them, and decided not to bother taking the remaining one home (which is incredibly unusual for me- if I pay for food, I'M KEEPING IT). I just honestly felt that there was no way it would taste any good later. One of my friends, who is normally a food-vacuum-cleaner, didn't even bother finishing OR taking his leftovers home. Overall, we were unimpressed with both the taste and presentation of our food. It seemed like something we could get for half the price at a way crappier looking restaurant. If you want decent Mexican, try Fajita Grande, Poblano Grill, or even Casa Rico. They'll have all the same dishes with better quality and lower prices, if cheaper decor. I can't believe this place is owned by the same people as Mariachi- which isn't all that great either but WAY better than this place. Oh, and definitely DO NOT order anything in a tostada shell. It tasted like it had been fried last week and set out on a counter until we had the misfortune to order it.

  • Lori M.

Went there for lunch with a friend. The food tasted good and was reasonably priced. I got the spinach burrito and the sauce oozing out of it was watery, but the flavor was good, and it seemed to be made with fresh spinach. It said it had cheese, but it didn't have much, but it was still very good! The refried beans were very thin...more like refried bean soup, but tasted good. It was served with yellow colored rice and a small lettuce and chopped tomato salad (more than a garnish) with sour cream and guacomole. My friend ordered one of the lunch specials. I noticed on the menu that it was supposed to include a beverage, but the waitress never asked what she wanted or if she wanted a beverage or said that it was included. We had to ask for it. The tip was added to our order, even though it was just the two of us...maybe it was because we used a coupon. The restaurant has several rooms and they allowed us to sit in one of the side rooms and turned off the music so we could talk more easily. Very few people came in while we were there, and we were there quite awhile, but it was a Monday, so that could be why. The waitress came back to check on us a couple of times and was pleasant, but not hoovering. The manager also checked on us to make sure everything was okay. The atmosphere was pleasant, with cloth napkins and cloth tablecloths. I would go again. For those with dogs...I noticed there was outside seating and one man was there with his dog.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Frederick. Service can be a bit slow sometimes, usually when you are first seated. Great homemade chips and salsa and tasty margaritas (fresh, not from a mix). Beer selection consists of the usual Mexican standards. I haven't had a bad dish here and have tried quite a few. The seafood burrito stands out. Cost is moderate, this isn't Taco Bell (you should be glad about that) but then again it tastes many times better. I haven't caught them yet, but they have some regular music act called the Singing Cowboys for free one night a week. Probably fun if you have kids, otherwise it might be entertaining with enough beer.

Mexicalli Cantina is more than a mexican restaurant. It's a fine dining restaurant that happens to serve mexican food. Their seafood is fresh and the menu is innovative. If you're looking for a plain taco or burrito, Mexicalli may not be the right place for you. If you're looking for a quality meal, I couldn't recommend Mexicali more.

Best margarita I've had in Frederick! Not too much mix and plenty of tequila. Chips and salsa good, not great. Decent enchiladas and tamales. The fajitas smelled awesome- must try next time. The refried beans were a little too runny for me, but they were tasty. Sopapillas were spot on, but I prefer my honey on the side. All in all, a good choice for Mexican in the area- I look forward to trying more menu items.

not impressed... I think I could have almost done better at taco Hell..lol.I ordered chicken soft tacos for take out.. opened the box and they were all soggy from all the juices running out of them... so forget take out... black beans were pretty good....salsa...runny and bland- I need some spice!!.. I do give them props though for the hand shredded chicken its a nice touch...

This is where I like to bring my friends and family whenever I can. Delicious food. Never have I heard a complaint come from my table. The chips they serve are warm and light. The salsa is basically "on-tap". Their spinach enchiladas are so good, I've little desire to try the meat versions. Yeah, I'm a meat-a-tarian... But I gotta watch them pounds.

Why is it so hard to find good Tex Mex in Frederick? We ordered guacamole to start that tasted like bland, old mass-produced guac. Very disappointing considering the price tag. Our entrees - a steak burrito and combo enchiladas were no better. Meat was overlooked and under seasoned, rice was bland and stale, and the beans looked too gross to try. To make matters worse, I ordered a pint of beer and got a dinky glass worth. Never again!
