Place is pretty dirty, the carpets should have been replaced years ago, strange tidbits and knick knacks collect dust all around you. Food is not made to order, we ordered four entrees, all of which were scooped out buffet style which they also do for their carry out. I'd assume they are using MSG. Their sodas come from a can. I could go on. I guess there was a time when they had it all together, sadly that time has long since passed.

Ordered the sushi, and subsequently experienced the worst food poisoning of my entire life. Will not ever come back here.

The best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Excellent flavor. The kung pao beef has strips of steak, not just chopped up leftovers. I will never go anywhere else.

I had pretty much given up on finding a good Chinese place in Frederick but being 9 months pregnant I was craving for Crspy Beef. I decided to try China Garden. When I called and asked if they had it and then asked the price I almost just decided not to get it as it is a little more expensive than some other Chinese delivery places. I am so glad I decided to give it a try anyway. Ordered on a Sunday night and delivery took less than 45 minutes. the portions were incredibly generous!! Definitely worth the extra cost. The Crispy Beef was almost all meat .At other places I always have to ask for no veggies and pay more for extra meat so this was a pleasant suprise. The Chicken Lo Mein was also huge and full of large chicken pieces. We also received 3 small cups of some delicious spicy cucumers and of course fortune cookies. Flavor of both was phenomenal. The delivery driver was super friendly as was the woman on the phone who took my order. Honestly I could not have been more pleased with everything about China Garden. I think we have finally found a good Chinese place here in Frederick. Can't wait to try more items from their menu.

The service was great & everyone was very nice. They give you complimentary pickled cucumbers (which were delicious), crispy things & hot tea. We ordered egg rolls, which were more like large spring rolls, which I liked, but my husband did not. My husband & I both ordered General Toas with fried rice. Mine tasted good, but it was hard-so it is the extra fried kind or maybe just over fried. It is a large portion so I only ate half ( can make two meals out of it). My husband really didn't like his which is weird because he eats anything & everything & is not picky. I tasted his & I did not like it. His General Toas was really sweet & did not taste like the dish normally does. All I can think of is he asked for it not to be spicy & that is why his tasted so different (& gross). But this is how he always orders it & normally they just remove the heat, never had it have such a different taste. His was also hard. Over all I would say this place has standard Chinese food with nothing special other than the cucumbers, but the service was really good.

#1 -- Allen is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet...truly. He is gracious and generous! Have to wait for your take-out? He'll make sure you have a beverage while you wait -- that kinda guy :) #2 -- This is the BEST Chinese in Frederick. We're Friday night regulars and the food is consistent, hot, and we trust it enough (and the wait staff) to order new things off the menu all the time. And they're happy to customize your order. And my favorite is being their guinea pig for new dishes! #3 -- The hot & sour soup is out of this world. Try the crispy beef, roast pork with vegetables, and the Chow San Shan! #4 -- I know folks are loyal to their Chinese food restaurants. Do yourself a favor and try China Garden...I think you'll be glad you did! Frederick institution!

Had lunch here the other day with friends and the food was great. We got there right before they opened and the place filled up quickly after we sat down! Just in time

We were lucky enough to have lunch with friends here during an unexpected visit to Frederick. We are now living in Tucson arizona, and let me tell you, if it weren't for Panda Express we would never get Asian food there. It is beyond awful. But, hooray for China garden. We had our favorite, general tso's chicken and cashew chicken. Great soup, egg rolls and portions are out of this world. A real Frederick tradition. Looking forward to our next visit!

Far and above the rest, we LOVE this restaurant! We're working our way through the entire menu and have yet to give an item less than 5 stars. Try the Hot & Sour Soup! It's absolutely outstanding!

Okay, now I'm sad. I really wanted to like this place. I really, really did but our experience with China Garden wasn't the greatest. Still searching for a solid Chinese take out in this town... Let me say, it was a pretty neat place appearance wise; not the average strip mall type. We originally wanted to eat there but opted for take out so just called in the order. The staff was super nice and personable which is always a plus. Sadly, they messed up our order. Anytime we try new Chinese, we have a go-to order so we can compare; orange chicken combination dinner, beef lo mein combination, wonton soup and crabmeat wonton. They gave us just the main dishes so no egg rolls, no fried rice. The lo mein was so dry I could barely eat the beef. I was happy it wasn't too greasy like a lot of places but overly dry isn't fun either. I still plan to doctor it up today for leftover lunch because the flavor was decent. Everything else was decent but nothing to jump for joy about. The crabmeat wontons were the jam. I think we will give this place another chance and maybe eat there or try something else. I'll update my review when we do.

I have been coming here since 2000, great staff and service. I love Allen the owner he's one badass dude. Their staff is very friendly and you won't regret coming to this place!! They also have good sushi as well. Definitely would recommend to friends or family members

Just had General Tso's Shrimp delivered. It was yummy! The food was hot and delivered within the timeframe they stated on the phone...also the delivery guy was so pleasant. Love the cucumbers...I've never had them before. I'll definitely order again. Thanks!

I LOVE this place, and this is coming from someone who can't eat most of the Chinese part of the menu. I love the atmosphere it is an old school looking Chinese restaurant and for some reason reminds me of the one in the movie The Christmas Story, not sure why but it does. The sushi is very good too, which is a nice surprise since most sushi at Chinese places is underwhelming. There is a whole page full of fun drinks that come in coconut shell cups with fruit and umbrellas. Really a lot of fun. I can't have them but the BF swears that the crab ragoons are some of the best he has ever had. The service was great and it was very clean when we were there, definitely worth a visit if you have yet to go!

I have to wonder if they make there food so overly sweet to cater to Americans with no idea of what good Chinese food is. How can Frederick Magazine promote this place? Did something go wrong since there reviews years ago? Or was that simply paid for? For one, most food sold in Chinese Restaurants are not really Chinese food. It is food that the Chinese made to sell to Americans. I say this from experience because I married into a Chinese Family who owned a Chinese restaurant for over a decade. They often laughed at the crap they would never personally eat but the customers bought. So HELLO, PLEASE STOP MAKING THIS BAD FOOD AND MAKE BETTER FOOD! Frederick deserves a good Chinese Restaurant. Which yes in China, there are flavors from regions that can be very different. But this is more than just from a "sweet region". This is hands down, the worst Chinese food I have ever had in the US or in Taiwan. The Japanese food here was terrible! The Miso soup broth was sweet. Miso soup doesn't take sugar. (Just go across the street to the Asian super market, get some Miso paste, add water, dried seaweed and tofu. PLEASE DO NOT ADD SUGAR.) Some fresh sliced scallions on top would be nice. The sashimi fish was limited in selection. I should say I was seeking sashimi and no, doesn't exist here. Where do we go for some good Benji Sashimi. The Tempura was HORRIBLE! The coating was like flour because they ran out of Rice Flour. At least tell the consumer you ran out of the ingredients so we can say no thank you to whatever is the make shift food. The twice cooked pork was terrible, sweet. We had 4 dishes, all were bad. I am also reading people's reviews of 4-5 stars yet saying things are not good. People need to rate this accordingly. If half of the restaurant is not to your liking, then I would give it a 3 star maximum. This restaurant is the worse Chinese or Asian food I have ever had. Oh and the tea is terrible too. Not expecting as much since most Chinese restaurants do not serve good tea to the customers but this was bad. sigh! Where is a good Chinese restaurant?

I'm so sad that this place has been consistently voted the best Chinese in Frederick, because that means that the voters have not honestly tried other Chinese restaurants in Frederick. I can see how the amenities (delicious pickled cucumbers, sushi delivery, fast and friendly service, and oranges for dessert) could sway many. They definitely get an "A" for effort in my book, but they do not have the freshest, tastiest, and best quality product for the price, which in my mind makes a restaurant "the best". We ordered sushi, general Tso's chicken, egg rolls, and dumplings. The sushi was awesome, especially for the price and the fact that they are the only place in Frederick that delivers sushi. The general Tso's chicken was a huge disappointment. It was a gigantic portion of dark, stringy, jointed chicken meat in an extremely sugary sauce. The egg rolls were great and the dumplings were good, but overpriced. The bill came to $40. We usually order the same thing from Asian Cafe (no sushi- replace with sesame chicken) and only costs us $28 for all white meat and fresh ingredients. Asian Cafe is extremely savory. The bill at China Garden was ridiculous and the chicken was awful. I can't figure out why it's voted the best- it's overpriced and very low quality. Taste the difference Frederick! Try Asian Cafe instead. yelp.com/biz/asian-cafe-…

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. Finally, a good chinese restaurant. The food is good, the service is excellent, the dining room is clean, the wait was short... this is the type of Chinese restaurant that was around when I was growing up, and that seems to have gone out of fashion in favor of take-out joints... We went in early on Saturday night, and were waited on by "Uncle John." Uncle John brought out fresh tea, pickled cucumbers and fried crackers quickly, and kept our water glasses full. He brought us chopsticks without us asking, and provided excellent service. But what I really liked was how comfortable he made my two year old feel. By the end of the meal she was scanning the dining room asking "Where's Uncle John?" He remembered her name, he tied her chopsticks with a rubber band so she could use them, he brought her water in a cup with a lid and straw right when we sat down, and he even taught her to say "delicious" in chinese. If he was annoyed that he might have to get out the broom after she left, he didn't show it (for the record, the chopsticks worked great, and there was no mess on the floor). He made our meal thoroughly enjoyable, and ensured we'll back again simply by providing kind, family-friendly service. And of course, it helped that the food was good. My husband got General Tsos and us girls split a chicken and shrimp combo. The chicken and shrimp combo was interesting because when it came out, it looked and smelled like a very hot dish- it was even bright red. But when we tasted it, we found it was mild, and really damn good. The General Tsos was crispy, sweet and a tiny bit spicy, like it should be... I also got the yellowfin and tuna sashimi (even though it was $2 per piece) and both were fresh and delicious- I saw the sushi bar at the other end of the dining room and it looked good... Finally, to end the meal we got fortune cookies, orange slices and cherries. The price for two and a half of us was $32 before tip, which wasn't horrible... especially considering the tea, crackers, pickled cucumbers, oranges, cherries, fortune cookies... this place really piles on the extras. And thus doubly ensuring I'll be back next week... Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. It's old-school Chinese, and I'm very glad we found it.

Best Chinese food americanized or not in Frederick hands down! Been coming here for years and never been disappointed. The best hot and sour soup in Frederick as well. Recommend the Middletown roll for sushi and general tso's chicken for lunch/dinner. Allen is also the best!

  • Lindsay B.

This place has the best sushi! My family has been eating here for years and everyone is so nice! Allen remembers everyone and always asks about my family! My grandparents ate here every Sunday after church when they were living and loved it. When they died about 10 years ago, Allen actually came to the funeral! Their service and compassion for their customers makes all the difference!

Recently, I ordered takeout from China Garden. My order (approx $13.00) of General Tso's chicken (dinner portion) and pork fried rice was ready for pickup when I arrived at the restaurant. Dining at home, my wife and I were delighted to find the sauce sweet and mildly spicy and the chicken tender and crispy. We also really liked the large amount of sauteed peppers and carrots that had been incorporated into the sauce. While not exceptional, the pork fried rice was also tasty. Further, we were pleasantly surprised to discover a container of spicy, sour pickles in our bag! Note: The dinner portion of General Tso's is quite large. As I mentioned above, one order was sufficient for two adults - there were even leftovers which I warmed up for lunch the next day!

China Garden has consistently great Chinese food and excellent service! The owner is always so nice - he has sent me home with orange tea bags when I had a cough, insisted to have an employee walk my bag of food to the car when I picked up a carry out order with my baby in tow, and is always so polite. The food is great! Normal food for a Chinese restaurant with lots of options, great sushi, and delicious crabmeat wontons! There's always plenty for leftovers. The lunch specials are excellent too!

Awesome Chinese cuisine. Have been coming here for many years. The service is always top notch and with a smile. The food speaks for itself. A major plus is the fresh sushi that is made while you wait.

I have been coming to China Garden since I was young and honestly it hasn't changed a bit. The service is excellent, the decor is the same as ever! China has THE BEST Chicken with Cashews that I have ever had. Even though I no longer live in Frederick, I have made the drive from Northern VA just to have some of this fine dish! The service is great and the prices are more than reasonable! A great Frederick landmark and treasure!

The best Chinese food in Frederick County, Maryland hands down. My family loves Chinese food and China Garden does not disappoint. We ordered the chicken fried rice which was an extra large container of perfectly flavored fried rice with lots and lots of white meat chicken strips. Delicious. We also ordered the sautéed shrimp with vegetables from the lunch menu. There were six big shrimp, lots of lightly cooked vegetables and fried rice. A spring roll filled with shrimp was included in the price. China Garden has won many awards for best Chinese food and the awards are rightly deserved. You will not be disappointed. Delicious!

This is easily this best Chinese restaurant in Frederick. I have been coming here for about 5 years now and their food is consistently amazing. Even when I converted to vegetarianism this restaurant has maintained the staple for Chinese food in my town. The staff is always warm and friendly, and you can tell that they are appreciative of your returned business. I'd recommend it to anyone.

  • Neena R.

Sushi was okay, not amazing and not awful. Lunch special offered a lot of food for a good price. The hot and sour soup was okay, but we did not like the crab and chicken soup. The General Tso's was so-so --- more vegetables than I prefer and not spicy enough. Hunan shrimp was quite good. The egg rolls were terrible, though. Smelled of a barn, tasted gross, and were soggy and extremely greasy. I hope there's better Chinese than this in Frederick!

  • Nikki V.

This was my first time here. I wasn't impressed with the food. The shrimp fried rice was good. The sesame chicken was great and different, but the Mongolian beef. It was more trees then meat and it was a little rubbery for me. The staff was great and the atmosphere was pleasant but the food was not the best Chinese I have ever had before in life. I will continue my quest to find one of the best.

Simply the BEST Chinese food around. Great food, and excellent service. It's also clean and fresh

Good food for delivery. The Crab wontons were delicious, and they put a cherry in with the dip for this appetizer, which was a creative touch. My General Tso's had bell peppers and carrots in it, which was a great change from the standard soggy broccoli that I've come to expect from most Chinese delivery restaurants. The fried rice was also very good. Of course it's not the healthiest and lightest of fare, but hey at least I ate and enjoyed veggies my Chinese for once! My fiance ordered lemon shrimp, which was disappointing. We didn't expect it to be breaded so it was not crispy and kind of soggy by the time that it got to him. Also the lemon sauce served on the side was just too sweet. Will order from here again, minus the breaded shrimp!

Not all chinese places are made the same. Some are just better then others. You can't go wrong with this place. Friendly staff with very large menu for vegetarians and meatarians! I was craving some flat noodles and they satisfied my craving with Chow Foon. MUST ORDER: Kung Paw Bean Curd, General Tso Bean Curd, Mixed Chow Foon

China Garden has consistently been voted as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Frederick. I'm one of those who always votes for China Garden; I think the food is the BEST. The food is always fresh and tasty. I absolutely love the Triple Delight entree. If you're looking for the best Chinese food in Frederick, you'll find it at China Garden

Gross. Dirty. Bad food. Gross. Terrible service (PLEASE do not sneeze in your damn hands while taking my order). As an out of towner, I'd love to take the people of Frederick to some good Chinese restaurants so they know not to go here.

Pro: The sushi here is inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. The rolls tasted okay, but it was not memorable. The rolls ranged in size from tiny to HUGE, so you can get the exact fill you want. Each meal comes with a free appetizer (some strange chip and cooked cucumber combo, kinda weird, but free) and free hot tea, which was very good. Con: The maki sushi selections were limited and typically did not include more than 2 ingredients. The rolls themselves were a little flimsy, and not very pretty to look at. The largest roll we ordered was so huge we couldn't easily get it in our mouths all at once and caused ingredients to fall out. The restaurant decor is a decent looking (though a little cheap), but looks dingy from the outside. Also the restaurant was understaffed for a Sunday night, so service was a bit slow. Recommendations: If you are just looking for something simple and not to extravagant, the sushi is enjoyable enough for the price. It's just not a "WOW" experience.

I've expressed this before but I just want to reiterate how amazing China Garden is! The sushi, the dishes, the crab ragoons... everything is just so delicious! Plus, they deliver. I ordered from them recently and even though I was technically out of their delivery area they still came. So once again, I highly recommend China Garden as the BEST sushi restaurant in town!

This has been one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I have never gotten a bad meal here and have been eating here since I was very little. 99% of the time I get hot & sour soup, beef and broccoli or the fried rice and it is so spot on! Great service, love the owner Allen and will always keep coming back! Sushi is also pretty decent but the rolls are a little large so sometimes it is hard to eat. But overall tasty and delicious!

China Garden seems to be oe of those places rated best Chinese in Frederick county by the Frederick magazine every year for the 30 years I've lived here. I suspect the owner works there. Personally, I think it is the best food I ever had as so far as Americanized Chinese food is concerned. Of course they don't do Japanese all too well, and their sushi kind of sucks, but no one goes to China Garden for sushi, they go to Roppongi down the street. But, I digress, I typically order orange chicken, general tso chick, or chicken and cashews. Over the past 30 years, they've been pretty consistent. I will admit, that the menu is a tad oversize and one can spend quite some time just reading through all the exotic sounding drinks they have, but there is at least something for everyone at this place.

So rude! Any and all questions were answered with a grunt as if we were being fed for free...not worth the ill treatment. I even got yelled at for asking if something was on the lunch menu.

Garbage!!!!! We ordered two beef dishes and one chicken. We couldn't tell the difference. Some Christmas dinner! Never again. Terrible!

I've grown up eating at China Garden, so my opinion may be biased. I'll make it simple though: -fantastic food that always tastes fresh and flavorful -fantastic service -great ambiance and decorations -will not break your wallet -the best won ton soup i've ever had -the only place i get the kung pao beef at (it's that good) -HANDS DOWN...THE BEST WATER IN THE CITY. Anyways, this place is just great, the owner (Alan) is almost always there and even when i haven't been in for a year or two, he still recognizes me and says hello. He's just a really nice guy. best chinese in Frederick.

  • Brian T.

Portions are HUGE! Food was tasty too. The fried dumplings were hand rolled and incredible. You can also ask them to omit the MSG, which is a nice option. Had the garlic chicken for the entree, wasn't bad, wasn't great, everything else was incredible though. You get free hot tea and free noodles and wonderfully flavored cucumber slices to start with. For an after dinner mint they bring you a sliced orange, nice touch. Overall a pretty good place to get Chinese.

Chinese food is scary. I'm not making a stupid "cat" joke here; I just mean that every time I try a new Chinese restaurant, it's worse than the one before it. We tried China Garden when we first moved to Frederick; it was OK and we just stuck with it. No, it isn't mind blowingly good, but it's consistently decent. My biggest complaint about them is that their food isn't offered in pints; its quart size or nothing. Consequently, we end up throwing a lot of it away . I know it's wasteful but, as tasty as it is, two people can only eat so much fried rice. They're usually very busy, even on weeknights, so expect to wait awhile for your food regardless of whether you dine in or take out.

China Garden is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Frederick. I work in Frederick three days a week and eat here as often as I can, I love their food. As a partial vegetarian I love the number of veggie options that China Garden has on their menu. Some of the dishes are very unique and all of them are delicious. My personal favorite right now is the General Tso's Bean Curd. It's AWESOME!! If you a meat eater they have a lot of options for you as well and all are very good. I've never tried the sushi here but here it is very good as well! China Garden is the best Chinese in Frederick and has very friendly service and a very pleasing menu!!

  • Danielle M.

Best Chinese food I have ever had! The sushi is great too! Friendly staff and great service :) I'm also impressed with how many awards they have won (posted on the walls when you walk in). Note - dinner portions are huge can usually feed two people. Lunch portions are inexpensive.

  • Hitoshi K.

Although I would have liked the menu to be more authentic, it was still decent. The best part was, although this may be because I came from a different region, was the cost-performance.

We're visiting from Boston and went here on xmas day because it was open and the reviews were good. The food was pretty bad -- certainly worse than the Chinese food at mall and airport food courts. I like Americanized greasy Chinese food, and this was no good even for that. They were busy because of the holiday, and because of that service was very slow and they made a few mistakes with our order, but I don't hold that against them. I don't know if this is the best Chinese restaurant in Frederick, but I certainly hope not. The food was edible, the staff was polite, and the restaurant was open, and that's all I can say for the place.

Dude, nobody's reviewed China Garden yet? Dang. China Garden's been here just about forever. Or at least 20 years anyway. It was the last tenant in a seemingly cursed building that cycled through restaurants as fast as they could put up signs. But China Garden seems to have broken the spell, because now it is a Frederick institution. Good chinese and passable sushi. Also retro tiki drinks. And waiters that have been here since the beginning. The complimentary tea is good too.

  • John A.

Tried it for the first time today for carryout, and the food was terrific. The portions are huge, and the food tasty. They didn't charge extra to substitute fried rice for steamed rice. I'm about to become a regular.

This place has really gone down hill. I had to ask for my soup to be warmed up twice before they finally brought it to me so hot I couldn't eat it. Straight from the microwave! My Lo Mein was also heated in the microwave. I will not be going back!!

    (1)
  • Curtis F.

Absolutely some of the most friendly staff you will ever come across in any restaurant. Period. The owner is almost always behind the register, and if you ever speak with him for more than 30 seconds, he will remember you any other time you come in. The same goes with any of the wait staff. They really are concerned with your experience and your happiness. The food is much better than average Chinese, and shocks me that they are still offering it for so little. Their sushi menu is lacking, but this isn't a japanese restaraunt so I don't complain. Even so, I'm very happy with their cuts, and you will without a doubt receive some very nice, flavorful meat in each roll. Their lunch menu selection, prices and portions will knock your socks off. Overall, their food is packed with flavor and is some of the best in the area. There is a reason why they have been voted best of frederick for so many years, and I think the lack of reviews is simply because everyone in Frederick already knows of the place and are frequent visitors.

This used to be my favorite Chinese Restaurant, but no more. I ordered Chicken with cashews, and the cashews had a mealy texture, like they had been soaked for ages. The dish had very little flavor and almost glowed oranage. Not like any Chicken with Cashews that I've had in the past. The other 2 people in my party also were not pleased with their food..."Not a fan" was the comment made. We went for an early dinner and the restaurant was not crowded, but service was not attentive--no one came back to see if everything was okay. I guess I should have known better--on a previous visit, the room filled with a burnt smell, and, as I tasted my food, I realized it was my order that was burnt. I almost never send food back, but this was totally inedible. The service that night was horrible, with our entries coming out from the kitchen at different times, so that no one was eating at the same time, And, by the time I finally got my corrected order, everyone else was finished. As I said, this used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant, but I don't think I'll be going back.

  • Luisita S.

This is not real Chinese food. It's slop for Americans who don't know any better. Meat is tough, food is greasy, sushi is not real sushi. Rolling up pre-cut fish in rice is not authentic sushi. Yuck. China Garden is so retro, it reminds me of the Chinese restaurants of 30 years ago. Trust me, you have to go closer to DC or Rockville to get quality Chinese food.

ok, lets be honest. the food here is mediocre and its a little pricey for takeout chinese food. however, they deliver and when i dont feel like going outside, its adequate enough.
