My wife and I stumbled upon this place by chance and were blown away by how good it is. Every dish we were served - from the sweet-potato rolls with molasses butter, to the fried green tomatoes, to the bean salad, to the coleslaw, to the main course (I had blackened fish, my wife low-country shrimp), to the dessert - was superb, and the price was extremely reasonable. Chef Chris Smallwood is a true culinary artist! Great ambiance too, plus a very friendly staff. One of the most delightful dining experiences we've had. Alexanders is a real treasure! Can't wait to go back.

My husband and I needed a date night out and we were looking for something new in the Frederick area. We found Alexander's here on Yelp and gave it a shot. Service: Could not have been more friendly and welcoming! Our waitress was lovely, personable and considerate. The other waiters would be walking by and see an plate we just emptied and say, "Can I take that out of your way?" Everyone was attentive and lovely. Dinner: Our appetizers of boudin balls were amazing! Just wonderful! My dinner wasn't as special as I wanted. I had the fish with rice and it was average. My husband's steak was well seasoned but overly salty which was a drag. We did get a delicious dessert and coffee and the chef brought out cups of free ice cream for us to try as well. I will definitely try this place again and the decor is simple, elegant and really comfortable. They go out of their way to make you feel welcomed!

This is perhaps my favorite place for dinner in Frederick. I have been here twice during restaurant week and plan on going there for my birthday this year. From appetizers, to entrees, to desserts- everything homemade and delicious. If you like good food, Southern cooking elevated, then try Alexanders.

Waitress was super friendly. Lunch for as low as $6! Fried green tomatoes with bacon and butter mild dressing delicious. We went during lunch on a Saturday and the place was not very busy. The BBQ chopped pork roll was absolutely terrific. You could smell the wonderful smoke coming from the BBQ pit. The Chef was smoking large amounts of pork and beef for the Father's Day Buffet that sounded like it was going to be an amazing spread. He came out to talk to my husband and me as we were walking around the beautiful grounds. Wish we lived closer to this place.

The night I went here, it was absolutely empty, and so my party felt a bit drained after a meal in absolute silence, but I thought the food was good, and the service more or less attentive. The real draw here is the beautiful old house the restaurant is run out of, and it surely did not disappoint. It's not a terribly expensive joint, but, then again, the food could be a little better all said. I'd probably still like to go back.

Bumping Alexanders up to 5 Stars after enjoying every single thing on their Easter buffet---leg of lamb, pit turkey & dressing, corn pudding, glazed sweet potatoes, etc. They now have their liquor license and are open for lunch and brunch. I still love their regular dinner options but they have become the special occasion restaurant and I've already made my Mother's Day reservations.

This place is great! Very cute old house (1780 I believe) and good southern food. The apple pie dessert was yummy. I'd like to go again and try their dinner menu.

Most foodies head to Frederick for Volt, but I bet many have not heard of Alexander's at Buckeystown. It is just a few miles outside of Frederick and a total surprise in a very good way. Four of us went on a Friday night at 8 pm, and the place was literally empty. Uh oh, we thought. But we decided to stick it out and I am really glad we did. It is a former inn built in 1780 with a beautiful interior and great porch. The food is straightforward southern home cooking, with no fancy twists. One good sign was that we saw the smoker outside with what we imagine to be all kinds of meaty magic going on. We were greeted by the host, who also turned out to be our bartender and our waiter. Food was top-notch, incredibly plentiful and clearly prepared with--not only fresh ingredients--but a lot of care. Did I mention plentiful? My husband had the fried chicken and it was a ridiculously huge portion and very tasty. Mom and I had shrimp and grits, which were delicious. Dad had a smoked half chicken and was barely able to carry on a conversation because he was too into his meal. Ribs and fried pork boudin balls for appys. Classic southern sides of mac and cheese, greens, green beans and slaw. Homemade (we think) ice cream for dessert. The whole time we were laughing because we were alone in there, but having a great time! At the end the chef came out to say hello. He said they are trying to build up volume but have not really done any publicity. Almost forgot to mention the prices, which are unbelievably reasonable. Huge portions for around $15. If I hadn't been there, I'd be skeptical about the quality. But now that I've found it we'll definitely make the drive up from DC again. Also, for all foodies who head to Volt and want another great meal near Frederick, I highly recommend this place. They are doing everything right -- just the kind of place I want to support.

I am so in love with this charming little place! It's located in a beautiful old house reminiscent of a B&B, but the ambiance is fairly casual. Service is always on point and there are so many memorable meals it's hard to pick favorites, but here goes nothing. Fried green tomatoes: these are so amazing that I'll go for the all you can eat fried chicken just so I can have all you can eat fried green tomatoes, which are included (or were when we went). This doesn't seem like somewhere I'd think of ordering BBQ, but they really kill it. The Carolina Style with overnight coleslaw is my favorite. I'm not wild about the she-crab soup, but it's probably for the best that I don't want to devour literally everything on the menu. My FIL ordered it last time we went and it was a little salty and seemed light on the crab.

This restaurant truly deserves 5-stars. A true definition of a hidden gem. The service was excellent. The prices were reasonable. The food was delicious. The ambiance and location adds to the charm. Our table ordered the she crab soup, fried chicken, boudin balls, fried green tomatoes, and Mac and cheese. All were very good especially the fried chicken and Mac and cheese. See pictures for more info.

We loved it. The setting is classic "classy" -- old white mansion with lots of original details and antique decor, really perfect for a restaurant specializing in Southern cuisine. (But be careful of the uneven walkways and steps without railings!) Apps: Brisket/pimento sliders would be enough for a light meal all by themselves. The house salad was a large mix of field greens, bacon, chopped egg, and tiny cheddar croutons. I chose the garlic/chive dressing based on a review and wasn't disappointed. Entrees: His prime rib was butter-knife tender. My fried chicken was excellent and I was shocked to receive an entire half-chicken, considering the more than reasonable price. Leftovers made for a great lunch the next day. Sides: Scalloped potatoes were delicious comfort food, green beans with a smoked tomato sauce were also yummy. Dessert: He had bread pudding and I had nutella ice cream -- neither "wowed" us but were certainly very good. All this food, plus 2 glasses of wine, was less than $100 with a generous tip for our excellent waiter. We'll return soon!

My friend and I didn't realize they closed at 8pm on Wednesday night and we were running late for our reservation at 7:30. They were still willing to serve us...As we walked in at 7:59pm. ( we felt a little bad but so glad we decided to stay) We started off with sweet potato biscuit with molasses butter.. That was delicious! We got crab soup, crawfish fritters, fried green tomatoes, and the fried chicken with 2 sides (mashed potatoes and green beans) to share. The fried chicken was the best I've had in awhile. It was crispy and flavorful. For dessert, we got the sweet potato pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The chef also gave us 2 of their cookies that were just made couple hours ago. Wow. Everything was amazing! Everything tasted delicious. Even with sharing everything, we had leftovers and I can't wait to have them later! We are so glad to have made the trek here. It really felt like home cooking and the portion was big. The service was great too! Everyone was so personable and friendly. I can't wait to go back and try out the brunch and other things on the menu!!

My husband and I came here for Sunday brunch and it was very good. I was really happy to see that there was other stuff on the menu besides eggs and French toast. Of course, we had to try the fried green tomatoes that everyone is raving about, and indeed they were delicious. My husband got the chicken and waffles, and they were accommodating towards his request to waive the gravy in favor of some maple syrup. I got the salad with brisket on top. He really liked it but said he could've used another piece of chicken. My salad was nice enough, the brisket was good (not that I'm an expert on that sort of thing or anything). The cinnamon rolls that they gave us were absolutely unbelievable. That was definitely the highlight of my meal. If, by chance, we ever find ourselves in Frederick around Christmas time, I will try that buffet.

There is nothing I don't love about this place! I went on a Wednesday night, which is when they offer their Family Style special. I was on my own, so that wasn't for me, but it has all the favorites. I ordered the Pork Boudin Balls and the Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese and a Side Salad. The salad was fine, the "house ranch" dressing was delish--and all dressings are made in-house. I received a complimentary sweet potato biscuit with molasses butter. I might come back just for that! The Boudin Balls (serving of 5) came out steaming hot. Very flavorful and not too heavy. The Mac & Cheese was a true Southern M&C. Not really gooey, but full of cheesy goodness. The fried chicken ... Oh my, the fried chicken! A regular order is a 1/2 chicken, so I have a couple more meals of it =). So juicy, and the perfect spice. I don't know what the spice mixture is, but it made my mouth happy!! I can't wait to go back!

We've been coming here for years for brunch and were never disappointed until our last visit. The recipes have changed drastically. Items served dont match what is on the menu. Staff is also totally different- they used to know us! Complaints to our waitress were ignored and met with "thats how we always make it" some food was burnt or undercooked. Hoping that it was an off day.... i would give one star for this visit but feel bad since we've been very loyal customers.

Quick update! Came here for dinner and the food was just ok. The sweet potato biscuits with molasses butter were stellar as always. Had the BBQ shrimp salad as my entree. They should really call it a wedge salad because this was a head of iceberg lettuce sliced in half with 5 large shrimp on top amongst other salad components. The cheddar croutons were very crunchy and not very flavorful while the roasted cherry tomatoes were really offensive and just not good. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and were quite enjoyable paired with the poached garlic and chive dressing. Once the croutons and tomatoes were taken out of the equation, it was actually a really enjoyable salad. Had some of the fried chicken which was very very crispy and flavorful. It's not something I would order or commit to an entire entree of, but it was good nonetheless. The topper of the night was when we were given cake complete with a candle by the waiter because we were celebrating a birthday. I thought that was a great way to end our meal and so so thoughtful of our waiter. Neither the cake nor the frosting were too overbearing, both were the perfect compliment to each other and as a whole, just had so much finesse in the flavor pairing.

Very good fried chicken and real southern side-dishes. Reasonably priced and the service was impeccable. This place is a little hard to find, but the dining experience is worth it. Highly recommended.

My mouth was watering just thinking about writing the review for this place. LOVEEE! Actually, I like to recommend Monocacy Crossing to people visiting FDK (instead of what EVERYONE else recommends, Volt) but now that I've been here, it ranks up high as one of my favorite places in the Frederick area to go for a nice dinner! First off, can I just say that the entire menu was pretty much nom, nom, nom. I wanted it all. I settled with the she crab soup (i had to omg) and it was amazing, as she crab soup tends to be. My brother ordered the crispy boudin balls (which by the way are basically fried balls of pork goodness) I only had half of one, because I was basically pigging out on my soup and free bread... but I probably could have eaten the entire thing out of gluttony, had I been wearing stretchy pants. As if it couldn't get any better, I had the "crispy skin salmon with pepper jelly glaze" (as described on the menu) with two sides (mashed potatoes and green beans because hello... not trying to be TOTALLY unhealthy now) and everything was so good, I seriously cleaned off the entire plate. Two people in my party attempted dessert, but alas, I did not. For I was already full and laying back in my chair saying "ahhhh I have a food baby!" I'd go back. But I'd save up my calories and prepare for an evening of amazing food eating (and honesty at amazing prices)

What a gem. I took my boyfriend here a few years ago for his birthday based solely on reviews, it was one of the best meals we've ever had! We ordered 2 drinks each, the fried green tomato appetizer, two entrees (one of which was the pot roast and the other was fried chicken I think?), and 2 desserts (hand made ice cream I believe) all for about $60! I tell people about it all the time. We were the only people there on a Friday night, our server was super attentive and the chef came out and chatted with us for a while. We don't live in Frederick anymore but we get pot roast to go when we pass through sometimes, it's so amazing.

I've had brunch several times with a positive experience. Had dinner and ordered the Prime Rib, and friends at the the table order it also. They ended up running out of Prime Rib and they ended up delivering a steak with a 10% discount with even asking me...Overall, service was fair...

Holy Brisket Batman! Buckeystown's best kept secret...the duck sliders were mouthwatering, are definitely on our list of items to order again. You can really tell the Chef put great thought into each flavor component. Hubs ordered the brisket sandwich, which was seriously the most tender brisket I have ever tasted. Brisket is known for being a tougher meat, but it literally melted in your mouth. I ordered shrimp and grits and it was definitely a winner, as well. They had a special watermelon lemonade, that had some sort of smokey taste to it (enhancing its deliciousness)... Chef made his way out to check on us, super friendly & passionate about food. Sent out some house made peach sorbet to help us celebrate our anniversary. As full as we were, it totally hit the spot, we wanted to lick the dishes clean! Our waiter said he had only a couple weeks on the job, he too seemed excited and knowledgeable about the food.

Restaurant week 2014: I checked the menu online beforehand to see what I might order and I decided on a two course meal for lunch. My buddy and I got there and the waiter only gave us the three-course lunch menu. I told him about what it said online, but the waiter simply said, "that's all were doing today". No apology, no sense of ironic 'bait and switch', just an attitude of 'take it or leave it'..... So, trying to not let that fact interfere with my food critique, I ordered from the three course lunch menu.... Honestly, the food lacked any luster or taste. Yes, all I ordered was a burger and some soup, but it was no good. It was a spherical ball of meat that was difficult to eat, and the bun was soggy and fell apart. The soup needed plenty of salt to bring out any flavour at all.... The sweet potato fries on my buddies plate were undercooked..... Nothing was spectacular at all. I would label this as 'quality food, prepared poorly' The location is nice, it's a beautiful historic house. I was really hoping the food would be wonderful so that I could keep this place in my bag of treasures for a special date in the future. But it didn't pass the test.

I went on Wednesday to try their family style dinner. The meal started with some sweet potato biscuits with molasses butter. The biscuits were a nice start. Next came some soup and fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were excellent, and I really enjoyed the sauce that they put on top. It had chives and bacon crumbles. Next came the main course: bbq brisket, fried chicken, collard greens, mac n cheese, coleslaw, and mashed sweet potatoes. The bbq brisket was great, but it was the fried chicken that stole the show. It was amazing; each piece was so juicy and tender. The side dishes were also excellent. I really liked the mashed sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and mac n cheese.

We went here for a date night, and I'm conflicted about whether it's 4 stars or 3 stars... so we're rounding up tonight. I LOVE the building itself- it's an old home that reminds me of the houses down in Richmond- high ceilings, pocket doors, floor to ceiling windows, corner cabinets... it made us homesick to go back to RVA... Our waiter was a casual fellow, who recommended the special, which was a meal served family-style that started with fresh rolls, soup and appetizers, then included pulled pork, fried chicken, greens, overnight coleslaw, mac and cheese, and green beans...it was a lot of food. It reminded me of Tanglewood Ordinary... though the quality of food at Alexanders is nowhere close to Tanglewood. The sweet potato rolls were good- subtle, still tender and light, with just a hint of sweet potato. The butter that went with it was sweet, and a nice complement. For the appetizer we got fried green tomatoes, which were undercooked and should not be on the menu until someone comes up from the south and does a review session on how to make them for the kitchen. (I know that sounds harsh, but come on- this is a southern restaurant and that's a classic dish... it's also really hard to mess up, I'm not even sure how they managed to do it... there was something wrong with the spices they used. Horribly, horribly wrong.) Our soups were more successful- Brunswick stew and she crab soup. Mine had a lot of shells in it, but good flavor, and my husband enjoyed his stew. Let's just hope the main ingredient wasn't squirrel. The main course was mostly positive- I didn't care for the pulled pork, I thought it was chewy and bland, but my husband liked it. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and relatively moist on the inside, though the batter they used for the frying needed some fine tuning- it was grainy, and tasted a lot of celery salt. Didn't stop me from eating two pieces, so take away what you will from this... The coleslaw was delightful, the mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, the green beans were great, and the greens were nice and vinegary. So overall I'd say the sides took the show. I was in the mood for dessert, because who doesn't like dessert, but unfortunately there wasn't one thing on the dessert menu that sounded good. It was basically chocolate cake or ice cream. BORING. The meal was $14.99 per person, easily the best value in the Frederick area for dinner. I'll definitely try Alexanders again, and likely try the brunch.... and hopefully they will fix the fried green tomatoes before I return...

The only reason I am giving this place a two is because the Wednesday family style meal I had before was ok to good. Thursday night is order from the menu. We had the appetizers, brisket sliders were good, crawfish fritters were good, and the fried green tomatoes were good. The fried chicken was exceptional. The rest of the entrees were not nearly as exciting. BBQ platter was cold. Two of us asked to have our food heated. Returned to table still cold. The Chuck roast and sides were cold. This person said they would take theirs home to heat it up. A third person asked to have her side heated, same thing, still cold when returned to the table. To top it all off, the restaurant was chilly. We asked to have the heat turned up. Still cold when we left. Sad for my fathers 86 the birthday dinner.

I can really only speak to the brunch service at Alexanders, which is worth a visit and is a surprisingly good value. A few miles down 85 from the crowded, sticky IHOP is this peaceful, scenic restaurant where you can dine al fresco at 11 on a Sunday without even waiting for a table. No complaints on that front! We were greeted by a warm front-of-house and offered the last open table on the porch. It's hard to turn down dining on such a grand porch, especially when the weather is nice. Unfortunately, the table was bar-height and sits on the porch at a slight angle, so seating was a little bit uncomfortable in exchange for the scenery and fresh air. The porch also shakes when people walk by, which is more of an issue when you're already precariously perched. Service was prompt and friendly, although it seems like the brunch menu may have been new-ish, and the lack of familiarity showed. I didn't see drinks listed on the menu either. A woman at the next table had the mimosa I wanted and didn't know about! Cinnamon buns were complimentary upon seating, which was a nice touch. I ordered an eggs benedict variation with fried green tomatoes and biscuit instead of canadian bacon and english muffin, and the tomatoes were wonderful. The hollandaise was pretty bacon-y, and although it was good, I found myself wishing it were more citrus-y and less meat-y. The biscuit on the bottom was great, something I'd love to try with homemade preserves, hint hint. As for sides, I agree that the cheese grits were wonderful. The quality of the grits makes me excited to go back and try the dinner menu with more Southern items. My side of ham was just so-so. I also had a fruit salad, and initially I was disappointed that the fruit was obviously not local--mango and pineapple. However, they were perfectly ripe and delicious, so screw local. The entire plate was really yellow/tan/orange and could have used some color to improve presentation. My dining companion had the french toast, which was also good but had a likewise drab color. When our check came out, it was under $25--a really fabulous value for such thoughtful food in a beautiful setting. I'm giving this 4 stars because I recognize that there is some room for improvement, but the thought and care in the menu shows, and I really think this place is a great find and can't wait to visit again.

I went here for a date night with my husband. We enjoyed the fact that this restaurant is located in a large, historic house. It has a lot of charm, and reminded of us a bed-and-breakfast. We ate in a large room with wooden floors and dual (unfortunately non-operational) fireplaces. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable, and not pretentious. The food is reasonably priced, and wine pours are generous. Dress is business casual, although I did see a few diners that appeared a bit under-dressed in jeans and sneakers. There were also some well-behaved children present. The food was quite good, but not overwhelmingly delicious. We will return for the ambiance and good Southern-style food! Some general advice: Make reservations, dress business casual, parking lot is not well-lit

My husband and I took our 94 year old Dad for dinner last night at Alexanders. What a delight and a treat. Starters with she crab soup and salad. Both were excellent. My father in law had the crab cakes, my husband the pot roast, and I had the fried chicken. All was served in a timely manner and extra hot. I tasted it all and everything was delicious. The fried chicken ranked up there with some of the best that I have ever tasted. Skin was wonderful, as it should be, but the inside (even the breast) was actually juicy it was so moist. I don't give 5 stars lightly. This meal was excellent in every way.

Yes, the best fried chicken you're gonna find anywhere, with a crust that genuinely shatters when you bite it, and at $15 for half a chicken, it's plenty for two after fried green tomatoes that are just as crisp, crispy pork boudin balls of lightly coated, nicely seasoned shredded pork(also deep-fried), and exemplary Caesar. Nice rooms, good, friendly service. What more could you possibly want? Great ice tea? Yeah, they got that. Smooth jazzy vocals for music? Yeah, that too. We'll be back ! Did I mention that we also shared our choices of side, the southern greens and scalloped potato that came with the chicken, and that they, also were excellent? I will.

Ventured in on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch after having waited a LONGGGGG time to try Alexander's. My sister and I were pleasantly surprised, the quaint historic home gave us the feeling of going to Grandma's house for lunch, so nostalgic in a sense. The interior is very cozy, big open windows and not overcrowded at all. We started with an Amaretto Sour which was DELICIOUSSSSSS! We were served the sweet potato rolls with molasses butter which... I imagine if it had come fresh out of the oven, would've been killer. The butter was solid so having a room temp biscuit deff didn't help melt the butter... But like I said, I can only imagine it piping hot... Slathered in melted molasses butter.... YUMMM.... Lol For our appetizer we had the Slider Sampler.. I can't remember which each slider was but there were three, a fried chicken slider... A steak and Caramelized onion and a BBQ brisket??? Whatever they were, they were all delicious... Finger licking delicious. For my entree I had the BBQ Shrimp Salad which I thought was a fabulous lunch, I should've asked for dressing on the side because there was so much of it... But still great. My sister had the Caesar salad with grilled steak and she loved it. I deff want to come back and try their dinner menu sometime soon because if dinner is anywhere near lunch... I know I'll love it. Delicious food, great atmosphere and friendly service... What more can one ask for?

A little gem! Gracious service and high class setting for such affordable prices. Starting with a generous house salad of fresh mixed greens with fun, flavorful green goddess dressing (creamy tarragon), followed by a huge, cooked just right, not dry, pork chop with excellent mellow onion topping alongside creamy grits, a large slice of salmon with pineapple glaze for my partner, finished with nicely done, not too heavy or too moist, banana cake with mild butter icing. Well worth the drive south on 85 from Frederick. Check it out!

I didn't even notice this place until trying to bypass I-270 traffic one day. It looked packed that day so we made a mental note to come back. When we finally came back on a cold, rainy Thursday, the place was completely empty. We thought about going somewhere else but bravely decided to walk in. And I'm very glad we did. The hostess/waitress was very polite and didn't make us feel awkward considering no one else was there. We ordered the barbecue platter, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and brisket entrees. The fried chicken was unique and tasty. It was a sizable portion too! The shrimp and grits were very creamy. The brisket was smokey and tender. The chopped pork on the BBQ plate was some of the best I've ever eaten outside of a southern BBQ joint. The complimentary sweet potato biscuits and spread were really good as well. It was an overall great experience. It was really quiet and had a nice decor. It is well worth the drive if you live in the Frederick or Montgomery county areas!

I went to Alexander's for dinner last Friday, I loved the ambiance, the very friendly virtues waiter and of course the good. I had the best fried chicken I have ever had, true home/southern style fresh and tender. I go not wait to go back and tried more dishes.

Great new Southern restaurant! Creativity and fresh ingredients really make Alexander's stand apart from the pack. Set in the 1775 home of George Buckley, Anthony ' s serves up mouth watering dishes like brisket sliders on cheddar biscuits, awesome fried green tomatoes with bacon. I also tried the Eggs Alexander with fried green tomatoes, smoked bacon and a cheddar biscuit base....yumm! The cheddar grits were equally perfect. The service was relaxed and friendly and while they did a great job of accommodating families when we were there, it doesn't seem like best place for kids. I will absolutely be back many times in the future!

First time visit and I can't wait to come back, pity it's an hour drive from Hyattsville! This is the best "home cooking" I've enjoyed in a long time. Every mouthful was delicious, from the biscuit and butter to the perfectly fried chicken and creamy Mac and cheese. The rest of the dining experience was quirky -- wait time, service, table location, staff interactions-- but they all fade into insignificance when the food is this good!!!!

Save your Money. Just went there for the first time. Food was not as listed on the menu. Sides were bland. Table was wobbly and the would not move us to the next table because it was be held special for their friends apparently. Service was not great and drinks are too expensive.

What a sad time. I was so excited to have a nice dinner out with a special lady. Nice menu. Food started great. Ended-up having ice cold slop on a plate for an entree. Server decided she wanted argue when I mentioned that it looked like the food was re-warmed in the microwave. Never try to re-heat a failed meal, then re-serve it on the same plate! Food all dried-out on the edges and grease raised-up to the surface. Nice and shiny like polished-up something. Had to send it back, then got ran-out without so much as a visit from the staff. I was honored with the full bill to boot! Got to love that down home cookin'! There are way too many nice places to go in Frederick without ever driving out to this place. Take my advice and admire the building as you drive right on by.

Delicious Southern cuisine! Fried Catfish, burgers, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, greens, homemade mac and cheese....and those flakey sweet potato biscuits will blow your mind!! They also have a really impressive children's menu. Beautiful location too!!

I was super excited to see Fried Green Tomatoes in a Benedict. You will never find that on a menu in Colorado. I love Eggs Benedict and Fried Green Tomatoes- who would have thought about mixing the two- it was delicious, Yum Yum! Order the Eggs Alexander! I had a side of grits and smoked sausage that is homemade. I loved the setting and the service. I wish I could enjoy another meal here soon but I live in Colorado. This brunch was excellent.

We had our rehearsal dinner here (back in 2012. Sorry for the late review) and it was delicious. The ambiance is very nice and quaint and the food was delicious. They set up a room for us (party of about 25) and it was private and secluded enough that we didn't feel like we were bothering other guests. I was so glad we chose to eat here before our wedding day. I have to try and go back there for another meal soon. The only complaint I would have is I wish they had endless amount of those cornbreads they bring out in the beginning. It was so delicious.

This is my first time writing a review, but I was so disappointed today that I felt obliged. I live not far from Buckeystown and wanted to try Alexanders for a while. My mother and I went in early at 11am (when they open) for the Sunday brunch. We were the second costumers to walk in and were quite rudely turned away at the door. When we told them we did not have a reservation, the hostess/server informed us that they had two large parties coming in and had reserved all the other available tables in the restaurant. We were not offered the option of waiting nor coming back later. They did not even apologize. We left upset and extremely disappointed. After leaving we decided to call the restaurant and speak to a manager. When we told the manager what happened, she was even more rude and unapologetic as the hostess whom we talked to. The manager only gave the excuse that many restaurants reserve all their tables for lunch and ended the conversation with a sarcastic toned, "Yea, have a nice day." I can't speak about the food, but I would not recommend anyone to go to a place that treats costumers so poorly. But, if you must go, make a reservation.

Alexander's updated their brunch menu and it's pretty great. The Bayou Burger and Chicken & Waffles are top notch

My wife and I have been to Alexanders several times and have never ever been disappointed. To start the service has always been friendly and helpful. But lets get onto the food. To put it plain and simple the steaks are awesome. Period. Best around.

Great Southern inspired fare! Never crowded and always great service. Beautiful place and great atmosphere. I have eaten here at least 4 times and brought my 2 year old and 6 year old. Although its quiet and housed in a wonderful historic home I have never felt my kids were out of place. The green tomatoes are good and the fried chicken is the best around. My kids love the chicken. Wife raves about the pot roast. Portions sizes are just right or on the large side. Well thought, Southern inspired, simply worded menu. Prices are in line with the food. The biscuit are really different. I am not a biscuit fan but these are some good biscuits. I really like the atmosphere, the way the staff greets my kids, the prompt service and we love the food. Can't miss with this place. Bring your kids!

Seven of us went to Alexander's for brunch for my son's birthday. The food was fine, but there were a number of sloppy misses on service which left a "meh" taste in my mouth. We parked in the big paved lot at the back of the restaurant and walking up some stairs marked with a sign "entrance to restaurant" only to find the door locked. Luckily a busboy heard us wrestling with the door and let us in. An unwelcoming way to start. They had been open for a while so I'm not sure why the door was locked. After we were seated, the waitress brought out 2 plates of cinnamon rolls for our table. A nice thought, but it looked like they took 2 large rolls and cut them each into 4 pieces. Some of the pieces were on their side because they were too small to stand up. While I was happy to see this starter, it felt very cheap to get such small pieces. Later I saw other tables get rolls (one per person) but theirs looked like whole pieces. I'm not sure if we got the dregs because we had 3 kids at our table, or if we just got the short straw this morning, but it felt like a half-hearted gesture at best. My husband and I ordered tea and we were brought mugs and a small selection of tea bags. Fine, but there was no place to put our used tea bags except on our plates. Saucers would have been nice. Mugs on the white tablecloth next to the fine china seemed out of character for a "fancy" place. Even IHOP puts the mug in a small bowl! Next up was ordering. My 8 year old asked for a kids' menu. The waitress brought out a double sided sheet and pointed to the top of the back, which said "Gluten Free Items." Clearly that wasn't right, so I turned the sheet over and found the kids' menu. We picked out something only to find out they don't have those items at brunch. She directed me to the back of the sheet and when I said those were gluten free items, she said those could be made into kids meals, and well, anything could be made into a kid's meal. At this point I was pretty frustrated, so I just ordered steak and eggs for she and I to share, plus an order of fried green tomatoes. The food took a little while to come out, which was OK since we were chatting. When it came out, my dad's scrapple was basically hollow - it looked like a big chunk of the underside was left in the pan. I asked the waitress to bring another piece for him, even if we had to pay extra for it (which we didn't). Shame on the cook who plated it. The rest of the food was fine, but nothing to write home about. The collard greens were a bit bland and the home fries were just cubes of deep fried potatoes. The french toast was made from baguette and served with a pecan syrup that was nice, but again a miss - the syrup was in a ramekin, not a small pitcher, so it was messy to either spoon or pour. The fried green tomatoes were OK, but not thick enough - mostly very crisp breading. The sauce with bacon or ham was very good though. The best part of the whole thing was how affordable brunch was. We all ate for under $100, including tip (no alcohol). Tea or coffee for $1.50 was a welcome bargain compared to the high prices I now expect from all restaurants, even the chains. I suspect a lot of our problems came from a young/inexperienced waitress, but I have to say that it marred the whole experience.

The best mac and cheese you will find anywhere. Very wise to pair with the fabulous fried chicken. Kudos to the chef!

This place is a GREAT little secret! Set in a home from 1788 with antique furniture and decor throughout Alexanders at first has a really "fancy" feel. Once you are handed a menu and taste the food you transport into Grandma's home for some good fresh southern cookin'! They start by giving you some fresh corn bread. Our appetizer of choice was the Cherry Cola glazed Pork Ribs with Vinegar Slaw because it sounded very interesting! It tasted interesting, too, but in a good way! Just a warning, it's messy! Luckily, they make wipes available for such an occasion. My boyfriend ordered the BBQ meat platter and wiped the plate clean (well that's not unusual but I'm sure he would have licked it if he thought I wouldn't yell at him). The chopped pork was the favorite on this platter. With each entree you get two sides and he had the southern greens and the sinfully delicious scalloped potatoes that I stole several forkfuls of. On to my meal: chicken for a giant aka the southern chicken. Best fried chicken I have ever had and I will have it tomorrow and the next day as well! Mac n' cheese and southern green beans finished my dinner. They make their own ice cream! Couldn't pass that up! We put our scoop of chocolate coconut ice cream alongside the rich-but-not-too-rich chocolate fudge cake. Service was great and the cook even came out to see how we enjoyed our meal. He's traveled on several occasions to learn from others with successful BBQ restaurants. He knows all the best places to go for BBQ and where the best meat is. He even shared a few tips with us for his mac n' cheese and potatoes as well as how he cooks the various meats they offer. They have a special brunch menu on Sundays which I look forward to trying out, in the meantime I'm going to make this our new dinner spot, prices are great for the amount of food you get! It was relatively unbusy for a Saturday night and I secretly hope it stays that way so I never have to wait for my good southern food. It's just under two years old, though, so we shall see!

Great food, nice atmosphere and the prices weren't bad for this type of place. Loved the fried chicken. The sweet potato biscuits with molasses were really good and I don't even like sweet potatoes! Everything was delicious. Can't wait to go back. I didn't bring my kids, but I really think you could and not feel too weird.

Amazing food, hospitality and ambiance! Happened upon it by chance and decided to take the family for Christmas Eve dinner. Doesn't get any better and is most affordable!

Hands down, the best fried chicken in the area, and best ive ever had. Service is really good. It can be a bit too intimate sometimes, as it might be your party and another in a small room, with no ambient noise or music, so your trying not to 'listen' to other tables convos. I had the green beans one time and i almost questioned if they were canned...but it just may be the way they are prepared (low country style). Nutella ice cream is delicious and so are the salads!

This is it. Real southern food! We had a relative visiting us, and he wanted to dine out at a local restaurant. He's originally from the South so I thought this would be right up his alley. We came here and left Alexanders stuffed, plump, and happy.

This place has great food and very reasonable prices. I really enjoyed my meal here Sunday evening. The Chef Chris is very talented and does a great job on almost any meal you order. The sirloin steak is huge with a capital "H" and the Pot Roast is fork-tender. The chocolate mousse pie topped with Nutella is to die for. The ambiance is very nice and reminiscent of the 1700-1800s. There might be some things that people will criticize, but this place I think is a jewel in the rough, becoming shiner each day. The single pane windows looks out to old town Buckeystown, a quaint place DC'ers will love to visit.

I have been to Alexanders a couple times but only for breakfast. Judging by the very excited and mouth watering reviews the time for me to try a meal anytime but the morning is fast approaching. However, don't take that to mean that you shouldn't try breakfast by all means do. I haven't been disappointed yet, in fact everything I have tried has been great. The menu has classics like red-eye gravy and southern home cooked specialties that I feel you just don't get everywhere or if you do it's 'meh' not that good. You have southern specialties that are cooked by a chef not a cook. This translates to wonderfully seasoned and flavored foods that hit the comfort food spot without being overly greasy and giving you that food coma after wards. The food is superb at Alexanders and the prices are very reasonable. I suggest going for breakfast perhaps on the third weekend of the month and you can drive a little more further north on 85 and hit Chartreuse and Co. for some shopping. The atmosphere is great a beautiful old home converted to a restaurant, service was on point and can't want to go back for dinner. Spoken like a true hungry hungry hippo.

My wife and I left this restaurant unhappy and won't be returning. We decided to try the family style dinner on our anniversary. There were two soups, one with clams and one with pork. We don't eat either. We accepted not having soup. The vegetables were not appealing to us but the waitress would not substitute anything for us. Still hungry, I asked for another piece of chicken and I told her I only eat white meat. The waitress told us that we could not choose which piece of chicken we would receive. Of course, the waitress returned with a piece of dark meat. We have never eaten at a restaurant that made no attempt to satisfy the customer. We left the restaurant unhappy on our anniversary and vowed not to return to Alexanders At Buckeystown again.

My boyfriend and I had been meaning to visit Alexander's for a long time. We finally made it out last Friday and couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. We ordered the pork balls and a bottle of South Australian wine to start. Both were delicious. I had the fried chicken and he ordered the pork chop for dinner. It was probably the best plate of fried chicken I have had in Frederick. And the portions were generous, I took the rest to go and it made a nice lunch the next day. We ordered a nutella/peanut butter pie for dessert with a scoop of some sort of bacon ice cream. The chef brought it out and chatted with us for a bit. Very nice staff, especially our waiter, Matt. We were the last table there and never once felt rushed. Great food, great atmosphere. And I think our bill only came to a little over $70. Will definitely bring my family next time!

Wow! What can I say! SUPERB! Excellent service and food. Enjoyed the fried green tomatoes. This restaurant is the best kept secret in Maryland, and definitely at the top of my list of favorites. I will be returning very soon to taste their famous southern fried chicken.

Nothing too special about this place. Went on Friday night for prime rib. It is very smokey. Crust is hard. Homemade horseradish dip not spicy. Steak was served over my two sides. One was mac and cheese and I ordered an additional one for my daughter, which the individual side was much larger. Homemade ice cream for dessert was good, husband got peach cobbler which only had a few sour peach slices on one side.

Update: We have been back many times, and every time has been very good to excellent. We were there one time when there was a large party (probably 60 people) and the service was a little less than perfect, but I still was impressed with how they handled everything. The last time we went, there was a party of women who seemed to REALLY be enjoying their wine, and they were pretty boisterous, but the staff kept them sort of reigned in. The food has been consistently awesome. I have yet to have anything that was not superb. This is my go-to nice restaurant, and I take everyone there! Enjoy!

We went on a Wednesday night and we were the only people there. Located in a beautifully restored 1780 building the service and food was outstanding. They feature southern country food so I had Brunswick Stew followed by Southern Fried Chicken. I have not had the stew before and I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was juicy, crunch, delicious and plentifull. The best part was that the Chef, Chris Smallwood chatted with us. We talked about BBQ, cooking tips and favorite places to eat. What a pleasant evening.

The other reviewers are correct -- good food; great setting; excellent value There is a small cadre of chefs in the Frederick area who trained at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York. Alexander's Chris Smallwood is one of them, and it shows. Antebellum cooking can be dull and dreary in unskilled hands. But Chef Smallwood brings skilled sensibility to a range of Southern favorites, from fried green tomatoes and shrimp & grits to pot roast and hoppin' john. And it's all offered in a beautiful old estate home at unreasonably reasonable prices. The whole place oozes historic hospitality and comfort. I don't understand why it isn't packed all the time. Update 12/23/12 -- I have to temper my enthusiasm and downgrade my rating after dining at Alexander's again in late December, right before Christmas. It was a Friday night, and the restaurant was nearly empty. We were one of only four tables. The ribs were tough to the point of being nearly ineatable, and the platings were sloppy. This certainly wasn't the work of the CIA-trained chef I lauded in my initial review. In fact, I'm now wondering if he still works there.

We had one of the most memorable meals I've ever had in the D.C. region last week. The food was superb and the antebellum inn itself is gorgeous. Not only that, but the prices were beyond reasonable for the 5-star quality of the food. We started with the crispy pork boudin balls, which were delicious -- like a southern BBQ version of croquettes. Then I had the braised pork chop with an amazing onion/bacon chutney, fantastic baked beans and mashed potatoes. My friend had the fried chicken and it was a show-stopper -- truly the best either of us have ever had, and we are fried chicken-obsessed. She also had the mac and cheese -- delicious -- and the green beans, also fantastic. The sugar cane/pecan ice cream was the most amazing ice cream I have had in years. I am still thinking about it. The apple crisp was awesome, better than my own home-made. The chef here is amazing and could seriously be cooking in the finest restaurants in the country. Do not miss this place if you have a chance to go.

Tried this restaurant after reading reviews on Yelp for our anniversary dinner. We shared fritters and pork boudin balls for our appetizer. The boudin balls stuffed with pork shoulder and rice had a delicious smokey flavor. I enjoyed tender shredded pork and beef brisket that you could cut with a spoon on the BBQ platter. It was accompanied by overnight slaw with fantastic sweet and sour flavor and no mayo. My wife had the shrimp and grits, mac and cheese, and tomatoes and asparagus. She loves southern cooking and it did not disappoint. We also shared banana coconut cake for dessert and bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that evening and amazingly the whole bill was just under $90 without tip. Unbelievable for a meal of this caliber. The staff was very gracious and shared details about upcoming events at the restaurant when they learned we had never been there. Definitely choose this place over the more expensive downtown Frederick alternatives.

I have been here twice and it was excellent both times. Definitely, still a best kept secret for Frederick and Upper MoCo folk. The restaurants sits inside a civil war era home in the small town of Buckeystown, MD. The staff is friendly and attentive and there are plenty of options for homecooked southern food. Everything is homemade and delicious. You will not leave disappointed. Yums: + Everything homemade + Starts with the best homemade cornbread + Brunswick stew, Pimiento Pulled Pork Sliders (amazing), Fried Green Tomatoes w/ shrimp ceviche. + Fresh watermelon lemonade (add vodka) + Low Country Shrimp w/ grits + Pot Roast + Fried Chicken (Best in Maryland, maybe anywhere) + Homemade desserts and ice cream- Heath Bar, Cantaloupe Sorbet (Best sorbet ever had) Letdowns: None, Nada, seriously Pricing: Moderate Atmosphere: casual, Civil War era home, like a Sunday Family Dinner Dress: business casual Service: great, attentive Food: Excellent homemade southern cuisine Parking: Next to the restaurant, free Wait: Make reservations since it is very small, not open every day Overall Grade: A+

This place has really good southern food. Had the brisket and pimento cheese on a biscuit starter and it was great. Southern fried chicken was so moist I didn't believe it was really chicken at first (had fried skin that was crunchy and delicious on the outside though). Only thing bad about it is that you get a ton of fried chicken. Really nice place all-around from what I experienced.

Can't believe I didn't know this place existed!!! The food was excellent - cheesy scalloped potatoes, pot roast, pulled pork. The atmosphere was homey and warm. Perfect service. Big portions. But the best thing is that the prices were extremely reasonable....easily 1/2 the price of other restaurants of the same caliber. All of this in a gorgeous house built in the 1780's.....Definitely a hidden gem.
