... so ages ago (early 1980's to be exact)... my dining partner in crime and his then "Flame Dame" used to frequent the Gringada once a week for copious amounts of margaritas and cheap Mexican fare... the emphasis on copious amounts of margaritas. Fast forward to present day... after many many years of hearing about the Gringada exploits of days gone by our curiousity got the better of us and we decided to give his old haunt a try. The Gringada is yet another one of the mucho Salvadorian restaurants in this area masquerading as Tex-Mex. Let that be a clue should you decide to visit... The pupusas are fantastic. Fresh, tasty, huge and just lovely when topped with Curtido (the vinegar slaw). For entrees, I ordered the Enchiladas de Pavo (Turkey) and my dining partner in crime order a combo plate which consisted of two chicken enchiladas and one pork tamal. Both plates come with salad. The meat inside my enchilada was unrecognizable... not bad, mind you, just indistinguishable. Was it turkey, beef, pork, iguana? I'm not sure. The twin mysteries were topped... no, let's say... "blanketed" with enough melted cheddar cheese to stop an ox dead in it's tracks. They came with "ho hum" beans and "ho hum" rice. As for my dining partner in crime's entree... the tamal was decent, but filled with chicken instead of pork and the chicken enchiladas were filled with the same mystery meat as mine. Also slathered in the same heart clogging layer of cheese. To be fair... it's not all bad. 1. It's really cute inside. 2. Service is unbelievably friendly. Our server could not have been sweeter (although.. excruciatingly slow-- it took over an hour for dinner and there was only one other two top in the restaurant.) 3. Can you say cheap? Really cheap. $7.00 and entree cheap. 4. Decent chips and salsa. ... so, will we visit the Gringada again? Alas my dear friends... many things are better left to memory.

Gringada is one of those places I've heard others rave about for years but I've never actually tried. Frankly, I'm amazed that they've stayed in business so long despite the pretty shady area that they're located in on Route 1 in Laurel. They must have a solid customer base, because I don't think the masses tend to flock to a restaurant that almost looks like a truck stop from the outside and is situated across from the railroad tracks. The closest landmark you could give to someone trying to find this place is the Ritz Camera store, and even that is down the street. But don't let the outward appearance deter you - the inside is quite inviting and is decorated with a Southwestern feel. The tables all have a sheet of glass atop the tablecloths, which is a nice touch, but to be honest, was a bit of an annoyance since the glass would move anytime one of us put our elbows on the table. (Mama raised us to know better though...) We came on a Thursday night during dinner hours and it was near empty - only two other tables were taken when we walked in. During our time there, one couple and a separate large group also came in. 3 of us were interested in the margaritas, which were $4.25 a pop, so we opted for a small pitcher which was about $11. We got about 4 or 4.5 glasses out of it so it was worth it. Not sure how many a large pitcher would serve. The margaritas were satisfying and presented with a fresh slice of lime. Our waiter brought out free chips and salsa to start. The salsa had a bit of a kick but wasn't too spicy. He brought out a milder sauce for one of us that wasn't a fan of the hot sauce. We went through the first round of salsa and chips quickly and were on to the second round before the food came out. Two of us were craving fajitas so we decided to go for the combo steak and chicken fajita dinner for two. If you're willing to share, this will save you a few bucks off of ordering the same meal twice. The meats and veggies were really flavorful - there was a distinct taste of lime juice in the sauce. It also came out smoking and sizzling like crazy! One of my dining companions had the taco salad which was served in a large tortilla shell and looked really good. The service was great, even though the poor guy was the only waiter on the floor. There was at most 4 or 5 tables he was taking care of but remember, one of them was a large group (10 or more people). Because we were celebrating a birthday, we had the waiter bring out a flan for the birthday boy. I had a taste and I thought it was a bit watery and cold, perhaps even slightly frozen. I really enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere here. I'll definitely come back to try other dishes and when I want an intimate dining experience.

Nothing fancy, but good, inexpensive, reliably delicious food. Both the Mexican and Salvadoran dishes came out better than average. This place was a good find--it's not too far from my job, but I'd have never known it was there if a local hadn't suggested it to me. Recommend the tamales and the pupusas.

This place is definitely not the best Mexican place that I've been too, but it's a good place to eat here in Maryland. The food is good, the waitresses are nice and they speak Spanish. The drinks are pretty good and not too expensive Overall not a bad place too eat. If you are experienced with Mexican food, then you may not be impressed, but if you're not....this place is really not that bad. I would eat here again and would recommend it.

Overall, I wasn't blown away by anything in particular. The service was very friendly, although the water seemed to be limited to one cup a person...or the waitress just didn't seem to notice we were sucking empty straws for the last half of our meal. We would have asked, but the opportunity didn't really come up. I got the tacos lunch special (2 tacos for $5). They were the same size as Taco Bell tacos, but tasted better. I had higher expectations than pre-manufactured taco shells, but then again I'm from California where the gringo Mexican food cannot be beaten (except maybe in AZ, NM, and TX). I might come here again if a bunch of buddies are already making the trip. My friend got the fajita and said it was excellent. Really enjoyed the complimentary chips and salsa!

Not fancy but great food and service. This is one of those sort of dumpy looking places that is a local secret of having the best food. It appears to be family run, has unbelievably good Mexican food and Margaritas, really good service by the staff that truly cares about your experience. For sure worth trying out but only if you are OK with a hole in the wall type joint.

Stopped off for a leisurely Friday lunch with my wife. We live nearby, but hadn't been in for 15+ years and wanted to check up on the changes. Lunch crowd was about 7 tables on the patio and 3 more inside and another group of about 15 outside up top. I wouldn't call the service bad, apathetic is more like it. Slow and not friendly. The food quality was poor. I had a combo platter. The taco was OK (hard to mess up a beef taco), but the cheese enchilada was terrible, smothered in cheap, greasy colby? cheese. Refried beans tasted like they came out of a can. No seasoning evident anywhere. My wife's pork burrito was large, totally unseasoned, lacking any enchilada gravy, and in her word "bland and not worth eating". The guacamole dip (large for $4.99) was very small, had the consistency of creamy toothpaste, and virtually tasteless. Hopefully it wasn't made on the premises or the cook should be whipped. XX Amber beer in the bottle was lukewarm and refill never offered. Inside, the place smells like a stinky mop bucket. Loved the supermarket price sticker on the bottle of piscante sauce on the table. Class act! We'll try again in another 15 years or so. Way too many other local tex-mex places to waste time and money at this one. Restaurant Impossible would go nuts on this place.

I used to go to this place a lot, but I have since stopped going since they expanded their menu. Don't get me wrong, the people are GREAT and the patio is nice in the summer, but they are now a mexican restaurant with 100 items on the menu, which you can correlate to a drop in quality. My recommendation to the management: drop the menu to ~7 items, go get the ingredients from a local market fresh daily and you you will absolutely stand out in this area.

Another horrible experience first impressions are lasting. We were seated immediately however it took the waiter 10 minutes to even take our order for water. Once the waitress finally came to our table I had to ask for chips and dip something I'm use to getting right away. Third disappointment my margarita was weak as hell I could not taste any alcohol. Fourth let down I finally took a deep breath and decided to order the sizzling fajitas needless to say the food came out and nothing was sizzling. The food was cold as hell the shrimp and chicken was coated in this yellow looking sauce that reminded me of throw up. Long story short I took one bite and was about to throw up in my mouth. I payed the bill and left my whole plate of food on the table!!!! A major disappointment. From this experience alone , I will change my route going home so I won't have to drive on the same block as the restaurant. Two major thumbs down in other words left swipe.

Enchiladas were gross. Queso was cold and gross. The steak in my girlfriends tacos looked like brisket and it was gray. Also gross. Salsa was decent I guess. Got charged for tea refills.

My boyfriend and I decided to stop in here when he was whining over how I never feed him when he's hungry. I have always wanted to try this place because it looks like such a hole in the wall and in my experience, those places always have the best food. When we walked in we were pleasantly surprised by the fun Mexican decor. It was very warm inside and the staff was friendly to us. We were sat at a table and given menus and then quickly given chips and a very tasty salsa. We ordered the refried beans and cheese and taco dip appetizers. They were both delicious. I followed that up with the gringada sopa, which was a tasty chicken soup with rice and beans, and my boyfriend had steak and eggs, which he tried to feed me a piece of, but by that time I was stuffed! The tortillas were fresh and everything was spot on. The horchata was homemade and lovely. The wait staff was friendly and sweet. I'm not sure why this place has so many low reviews, I'm pretty hard to please and I was super happy!

My sister and I wanted to try restaurant for the longest, so finally we did after about 7 mins still no water no chips mind u the restaurant wasn't even crowded.. all in all Left swipe the whole . experience was not pleasant I took literally 2 bites of my food and I was turned off my sister and I left. The food was cold as heck....

The waiting service was okay but the food was horrible. I ordered fajitas and the meat was not fajita. Portion wad extremely small and cold. Not sizzling.

First time here. Initial impression was ok. It's a hole in the wall. Only two tables on a Saturday afternoon. It's a fairly small place to start but they also had a DJ. While I can appreciate a little Mexican music to add to the atmosphere, it was so loud, my husband and I could barely hear each other. Staff was very friendly, but seemed preoccupied. We waited longer than we should have for the amount of customers, but the restaurant was very clean. Always a plus. We started with frozen margaritas. They were very weak. I had a burrito. It was the size of a newborn baby and was very good. My better half had the chicken chimichanga and ate every last bite. All in all, the food was great but the whole experience was just meh. I would recommend giving it a shot if you are in the area and want authentic Mexican cuisine.

I went to Gringada for lunch today. The food was good but the roaches on the table and wall while I ate were NOT. I jumped up from the table so the waiter could kill the insects and the woman there had the nerve to insist that I pay the bill. I can't believe they offered me nothing besides the bill. Customer service gets a zero!

This place is a sleeper! I've passed it so many times, but never thought to go in because the area is a bit sketchy. A friend HIGHLY recommended it, and I'm glad we went. We'll definitely be going back, too. Parking is available in the small lot in front and to the side of the restaurant, which is located in what can only be described as an industrial area. Across the street lies a railroad and the surrounding businesses are auto body shops, tow places, etc. One you get inside, you're in for a treat. It's very welcoming and nicely decorated. There are tons of booths, which I think is more private and always a plus. The waitress was extremely friendly and gave good advice on the menu offerings. I also thought it was cute that she and another waitress danced with some of the customers as the night went on. As far as the fare, I recommend the margaritas. The pitcher was cheaper than the glass and four of us got a heaping glass out of one pitcher. The rice is surprisingly good, too. The chips and salsa that come with the meal were just OK. I felt the salsa was too thin, but it had a decent flavor otherwise. This is important: they have karaoke. I think I enjoyed laughing at the drunk singers more than anything else.

I really want this place to be good considering it's proximity to my office and my love of Mexican food, unfortunately the food is just bad. I ordered the steak fajitas and what came out was a huge pile of under cooked peppers and onions with some type of gray meat sprinkled throughout a swimming pool of some sort of sauce. You can tell that the quality of the steak was essentially stew meat. The rice was cold, the beans seemed like they were out of a can. The place itself is a little dingy and disorganized. I added a star because the people there are very nice and it might not be a bad place to grab a beer, but they need to hire some kitchen help pronto!

I always have a great experience here..no complaints! I always get the same dish, enchiladas suizas, and they've never let me down. The Margaronas (I made up that name, but all it is...is a Margarita w/a Corona) are okay. Their ceviche is always fresh and tasty. I love the outside deck seating in the summer. The interior could use some improvement as the lighting and decor are too dim/dark and the furniture could use an upgrade. I probably visit this place once every 2 weeks, but mostly for take out. My food never takes longer than 15-20 minutes and the hostesses and wait staff are always super pleasant. I'll be back this weekend!

When walking up to this place (suggested by a friend) I was for certain that this was going to be where i ate my last meal.. haha This place looks scary from the outside but i was pleasantly surprised when I stepped in. This place got high marks in every area i expect when it comes to a Mexican restaurant. The wait staff was super friendly, often dancing with customers and making sure everyone was having a good time! The drinks were delicious and just the right amount of strong. And the food was great! the portions were a good size for the price and i have no complaints about how they tasted.. Next time, and there will be a next time, i wont be so hesitant to go in because once you step in you forget that you in what looks like an abandoned shack from the outside. You start to enjoy the mexican food experience!

So-so food, indifferent device and sneaky pricing make this a good miss. If you are northbound on US1, go another 4 miles to Tampico Grill for actual Tex-Mex. The margarita was OK but thin, as were the salsa and queso dip. The pork tamale was a mass of custardy bread with a bit of meat inside, served with no sauce of any kind (we were told none was available?!). The kid's meal was served with the wrong side order, and the waitress was adamant that she had it right, until she actually looked at the menu. She fixed it. But it seemed odd that the wait staff doesn't know the menu. The Asada de Puerco was awful. Overcooked, nearly tasteless meat (possibly pork?) in a bland sauce accompanied by canned refried beans and pico de gallo smothered in sliced jalapeños from a can. This feast took forever to arrive, and then it was a challenge to get Halley's waitress to return. She did not clear the table until serving desert forced her to, and it was another 15 minutes to get the check. Check for 2 adults, 1 child was (drum roll, please) almost $65.00! This is not a typo. How is this possible? After all, aren't the entrees only about $10? Yup. But like more and more places, Gringada nails you on the little items. 1 tamale: $2.95. Iced tea: $2.95. And my favorite: Fried ice cream dessert, a torpid plate of vanilla ice cream in a soggy crust with Hershey's Syrup drizzled on top: an astonishing $5.50 each! It all adds up fast. Best not to mention the filthy bathroom or the ear-splitting cacophony of not one, but TWO sound systems on the outside deck playing completely different Latin pop tunes simultaneously to give that "Sears TV Department" ambiance that appeals to - nobody. (We actually watched a couple walk in, hear the music, walk out, get in their car and drive away.) No volveremos.

Nice atmosphere, nice staff, but disappointing food. Enchiladas are nothing more than shredded cheese from a bag stuffed into a corn tortilla and then heated for half the time needed to melt the cheese. Had to send my plate back to spend more time under what was undoubtedly a heat lamp. Otherwise, I liked the joint. But we eat out to enjoying our food, first and foremost, and there was nothing about my meal I'd ever come back for again.

I hadn't been here in awhile but my wife wanted to go someplace close that had a Martguerita because of a particularly tense day at work. It's a nice enough place with real Spanish speaking people working there and waiting on the tables. The menu is pretty much the same as it's ever been and the food is so-so Mexican. The ambiance is OK as long as you don't end up there on a crowded evening. They do have outdoor dining in the back which is nice but since the restaurant is right on RT 1 - which is a very busy road - the noise might get to you and there is really no scenery. The drink was good, according to my wife and the service was friendly and attentive. Three stars says it's "A-OK" which it is. Nothing special but not terrible and not cheap but not expensive. A nice, casual Mexican place.

I went here with a friend who was actually born and raised in Mexico. We weren't very impressed. The place is old and I pass it a million times so we decided to try it. The fajitas weren't that great, guacamole was decent, margarita was okay. Overall wouldn't go back.

I love this Mexican Restaurant and try to plan a trip here every 1-2 months even though there are other Mexican places that are closer to me. -Good food : fajitas, enchiladas, margarita, mexican beer etc -Economical -Humble but nice interiors; the outdoor seating used to be great in summer and spring, but they covered it up the last time i went

The food here is OK - but the happy hour prices for beers (ALL beers - even imports!) until 8PM is $2.50. Can't beat that with a stick. I enjoyed the chips and salsa, guacamole was incredibly creamy and a generous portion. The place was EMPTY, though. We only came in for drinks and a snack after work - so it served us well and the service was very friendly. Am I the only one enchanted by the price of BEER?

Went here for Cinco de Mayo and had some pretty decent Mexican food. The place was packed but the staff did a great job of accommodating our larger party. The servers were also really nice. We started out with chips and salsa, which had a lot of kick. If you can't handle spice, I would go easy on the dip. For my entree, I ordered the chicken enchiladas which were delicious. I also enjoyed the frozen margarita. According to my friends who had theirs on the rocks, the drink was pretty strong. That said, if you're looking to get a buzz, pass on the slush. All in all, Gringada was a solid spot. I'm glad to know there's a more authentic alternative to Chevy's in the area to turn to for some South of the Border cuisine.

Our second visit was wonderful. The sliders are just right from the bun to the meat and topping options. The honey lime mayo dressing is worth coming back for. The steak quesadilla was delicious, and the fried ice cream was good too. Management is very responsive and friendly. We will be back.

Pros: - We were a party of 10 arriving around 8pm and they seated us immediately - Our servers were super pleasant and great at keeping our drinks replenished - The queso and salsa were both very tasty (the restaurant earns a star for this alone) - The chips were warm and fresh - The portions for most of the meals were huge! 5 of us took leftovers home Cons: - The margarita was okay but not great - The meals didn't come at the same time BUT they did come out as they were ready, so that wasn't so bad Gringada was good. Despite it being somewhat small, they easily accommodated a party of 10. The queso was awesome, and the chips and salsa were very good. Our servers were accommodating with our requests for more chips, salsa, and drinks. The food was good, not excellent, but I would eat here again. I got the steak and shrimp fajita platter, but next time would go for all shrimp. The steak wasn't bad, just not my preference. Other observations: The bar in the back wasn't particularly busy, but looked like it could be a fun place. Despite being a smaller restaurant, the women's restroom had two stalls rather than being a single-use bathroom.

I stopped by here for a late lunch and ordered beef nachos. I asked for water, but was told that tap water wasn't available due to an issue with the filter in the kitchen. It seemed a little strange or like the classic upselling but I ordered horchata and figured it was a minor issue. The nachos were pretty good, but came without guacamole and only with a small amount of sour cream. It was almost like they were expecting that I would ask for more. I asked for a little more sour cream and was given another small cup. I learned to my great surprise that the sour cream cost $1.75 extra. Not a big deal, but based on the issue with the water and the lack of guacamole, I felt this place is trying to nickel and dime customers. The place was also dubiously clean and while the waitress was nice enough, I would never come back here.

A good go-to place when we want pretty good Mexican food for not too much. Love the outdoor seating - is the groundhog family still around? I haven't seen them...but they were always a "free entertainment" thing on the deck. I'm a vegetarian, so...finding good veggie food can be a challenge. Black bean soup is yum. Get the taco salad and go home happy. Service is pleasant and reasonably prompt (we don't go there when we're in a hurry, we go when we want to sit and sip and nibble). Oh and the chili con queso...yum!! Yes it has TV, but...usually it's running soccer. The music is loud, but part of the fun. Good little neighborhood joint.

This place used to be my favorite. It had atmosphere, it had service and it was fun! This little hole in the wall had so much character. They had put a deck on the backside that was open to this Mexican landscaping with trees and there were these freakish size holes in the ground that looked like ground hogs took over after closing time. But it was a great place the eat outside and they played Mexican music. The food is always fresh and the service was great! But all good things must come to an end. The place must be under new management. They inclosed the deck and put up Black iron fencing that separates you from the landscaping. It's hot the air doesn't flow. The service is gone. The food is still fresh. I'm on a quest to find that atmosphere. Good bye Gringada?

I ordered the chicken enchiladas and they were good except tons of CHEESE. I'm talking loads and loads of it. And if you get refried beans, guess what,? More cheese on top. Next time I'll order without the cheese on top but I thought it was pretty good. Don't let the outside scare you. It's pretty busy and the food is a good price and pretty yum-o.

3.5 stars. Not the best I have ever had, but pretty good. A hidden mom and pop joint that is warm and friendly. The service was very good. Major points for our server who brought a mild salsa and a drink in a to go cup for the kid at our table. The menu is expansive and covers kids, to meat eaters, to veggies. And the prices are great! We will be back to try more items.

This is my second time coming here, but first time actually remembering to check in and write a review. Shame on me. The first time I went here it was for the Enchiladas. Very tasty and very filling. In fact it was more than what I should've ate for lunch. An added bonus was the price was considerably less than what I typically spend for lunch (if I don't bring my own). As far as wait, there was very little. It was moderately populated, but the food came out in good time and was so hot. This time was a little different, however. I wanted something a little more simple -- a burrito, no beans. Most mexican places I go to compensate the lack of beans with more lettuce, salsa, etc. This place didn't seem to. The burrito seemed somewhat small due to ordering without beans. Perhaps if they had some kind of side dishes (salad, etc) I'd have considered one. That, or I'll just stick with Enchiladas. It was also very empty this time (only one other group was there), so I'd say there's no real problems with service during the lunch hour. I'll have to consider this place for a happy hour, when it gets warmer of course.

Good restaurant for Mexican. Music was loud but everything came out hot and tasty! The only other problem I had was that I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas and, while I like tail as much as anybody else, it was not cool still attached to my shrimp.

The steak was pretty tasty and my girl said the lobster was okay. Really I'd say everything was just okay, no wow..well okay the plaintains were really good. Service was lacking. Waitress didn't bother to come back to check on us after delivering the food. I had to get up and find her stuffing her face, when I needed another drink. I think I'll stick with my standards, mango grill, tampico grill, or if I have to go to a chain...Chevy's!

Lousy, lousy service. The waitress was so rude. First, she convinces me to change my order because a similar one was better. We asked what the difference was and she said just that it came out on a hot plate. When we get the bill, we see she charged us $8 extra for the rice and beans that we thought came with the fajitas (cause when don't they?!?) and she said there was no other difference between what I wanted to order and what she told me to order. When we ask her about the bill, she claims that she told us they were extra and that there was nothing she could do since we already ate it. Didn't offer any help, didn't offer to bring out a manager. Will never go there again. Ever.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
