I really like this family owned place in lower mills. The food is pretty good. I've only had breakfast here but the lunch menu looks decent as well. The specials don't change, but that's ok. The service is pretty decent - 8/10 I've had a good experience. Does the place "wow" me? No. But it's a good atmosphere, with good food and generally good service. I will say that skimp on turning the heat on. It's always very cold in the restaurant so bring a sweater if you tend to get a chill. They have a really nice sit up marble bar with full menu which I enjoy a lot, you should order a side of the raisin soda bread it's sooo good and home made. I've noticed the bathroom doesn't seem to get regular cleaning, makes me wonder about other areas of the restaurant....I'm hoping (and trying to make myself believe) that this was only 2 random times I've encountered the not so clean bathroom. Overall I say if you live in the lower mills area this is a place to check out once or twice.

Had a great experience here yesterday. My friend and I were standing outside after realizing the door was locked and they were closing up. The manager Kevin came to the door and opened it and said if we would like to come in we can because they hadnt closed the registers out yet. He also mentioned when we checked out that they are a new business and they are open to any feedback we have for them. We got a strawberry shortcake cupcake, a chocolate rasberry macaroon, snickerdoodle cookie, a rasberry linzer cookie, and a mini cannoli. I found the cannoli cream to be a little bland for my taste but everything else was really good and the prices were cheap. I love the decor inside. The fireplace, the art on the walls, wood floors, the overall setup. The customer service was really good and I look forward to going back sometime.

Positives: -great omelette menu -turkey sausage Negatives or Right for you: -bad coffee in a cafe is becoming too common. -espresso machine with no trained barista? Stay away from espresso drinks. -dry muffins/cupcakes. -awful lunches (no love in the dish) -questionable customer service. Restaurant Suggestions: -don't serve lunch if no one wants to cook it or serve it. (Better to stay closed than to fail on customer service/quality food expectations). -your omelette menu is fantastic, stick to what your good at, condense your menu. -Hire a trained Barista if you keep the espresso machine. -Flat Black Coffee is right around the corner...serve their coffee? Memorable/Afterthought/Forgettable until: -Forgettable until improvements are made. Customer Suggestion: -what you buy, or realistically, vote for, will perpetuate. Make sure you're investing your money in a business you believe in.

Stopped by for a quick bite this morning and got a coffee and some sort of brioche raspberry pastry. The coffee was decent but the pastry was dry. Service was OK. The pastry didn't wow me so don't think I'll be stopping here regularly for any sugary treats. Plenty of seating and they do offer breakfast service. Street parking only.

I'd like to give Sweet Life one star because of their rich soft buttery linzer cookies with fruity apricot or raspberry filling dusted with confectioners sugar. The reason I want to give them one star is because the cookies are as good as anywhere, compare them to Lyndell's in Somerville or the linzers you find at Darwin's or Lakota, they're really good but they're only a buck apiece. I'm afraid to rave about them because word will get out and I may have a hard time getting my fix, I mean my order filled. This was my second visit. On the first they weren't open at the posted time in the morning. There was no sign of life and they were still closed thirty minutes later. I was jonesing for a good muffin really bad and pissed beyond normal, but the linzer cookies have completely wiped the slate clean. I'd like to go four stars until the atmosphere finds its groove, but I'll do five to offset some of the low ratings from the boneheads who were comparing service speed to McDonald's. The girl who waited on me was cute AND friendly. The interior is modern. Looks like granite and wood but feels a bit lifeless. Maybe they can check out a real cafe and copy the vibe to get something going there. It seems like it could be a great place to hangout. Major disadvantage is probably parking. It's almost a ten minute walk from Ashmont but parking is unmetered. Judging from the cookies I'm guessing this place has the potential to be a real hidden gem but only time will tell. Put on some tunes, post some free wifi posters, get some attitude and make the place fun will ya? I want to see you around six months from now.

The Sweet Life Bakery & Cafe is a lot like life in general - totally unpredictable! Some parts a great, some parts are just okay, and some parts just down right stink. The two or so times I've visited Sweet Life have been to order sandwiches to-go. My experience is always the same: I place my very simple two sandwich order and wait 20 minutes for the sandwiches - during which time I buy pastries out of boredom. I never can understand why it takes so long to make two sandwiches, especially since there are always at least four people behind the counter idly chatting while I wait. The quality of the food has been very inconsistent: - The grilled vegetable sandwich was great, the Reuben sandwich was tough and skimpy. - The homemade chips were fresh and light one time, and could break a tooth the next time. - The cupcakes were once moist and flavorful were replaced by stale and plain cupcakes Even the pricing is all over the map! You can spend $2.50 for a croissant or $10 for a small loaf of banana bread. With sandwiches at $8 a pop, I want to know that I'll be getting the same quality each time. Instead, its kind of a gamble. I hope that the service and quality of the food at Sweet Life improve over time, because it could be an amazing place. I just feel uncomfortable spending over $20 on a lunch that may or may not be good. But that's Life!!!

Solid breakfast place. Went on a Sunday morning and the wait was ok - about 15 minutes. Seats opened up at the breakfast bar so we sat there. Place is nice and spacious, high ceilings so it feels bigger than it is. Service was very friendly, coffee was ok, (only got regular, but they also serve Americanos and other espresso drinks). I got the steak and eggs which came with red potatoes and toast - steak was medium rare as ordered and eggs were nice and runny as ordered. No pressure to eat quick, clean facilities, and quick refills on coffee. Thanks!

The service was terrible and the food was below average. I'm bummed cause I really wanted to like it. I won't be back.

Great sunny place with nice wait staff. The breakfast portions were nice and big and the fruit was very fresh. The omelet and the bacon and egg dishes were very good. The place had a nice relaxed feel and they had a great selection of sweet pastries.

Yay! I finally found the best breakfast place ever. The nutella french toast with strawberries and whip cream was amazing! Eggs and pancakes were simply delicious and all at a reasonable cost. The servers/ waitresses are extremely friendly and personable. Its such a cute place, the decor, the wooden tables remind me of being in South End. If I have to go to breakfast, this is where I will be going from now on! I went back and it wasn't the same as before. Service was slow and breakfast wasn't up to par as my initial visit. I hope it gets better.

This is my new go-to breakfast place in Dorchester. It's open early, the food is clearly made from scratch and the coffee is excellent. Sorry McKenna's. The scrambled eggs in the breakfast sandwich were light and fluffy, the french toast was thick and moist, and the corn beef hash is homemade rather than out of a can - more of a "mashed potatoes with corned beef" than a traditional hash. Further bonus points for real maple syrup. My only criticism is I'd prefer a smaller portion of hash, with a higher meat to potato ratio. But that's a matter of personal preference, it's delicious as is too. I can't wait to go back and try the full Irish Breakfast, and I heard they are going to be serving dinner soon? Fantastic.

Delicious! Went with two friends for a late breakfast and everything was excellent. We were all stuffed but couldn't resist stopping for dessert on the way out! I mentioned to the fabulous waitress that it was my friend's birthday and she and the other wait staff brought a cupcake with a candle and sang happy birthday! We will be back!

This is for the cupcake. I had the vanilla one, which they call the "plain Jane". This was not a good one. Dense. Hard. Icing was rock solid. You know break apart kinda hard. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that 4 pm had a lot to do with the freshness. In any case, it was a cheap treat ($1.77), and that's about it.

Kudos. Finally, some good food in Dorchester/Lower Mills Huzzah! This place rocks. It's got amazing breakfast/brunch food. I ordered an omelette this morning with goat cheese and spinach. Came to about $7; cheap for goat cheese! The servers are incredibly informative and compassionate. One woman next to me didn't think her turkey burger was made well (as a turkey burger lover and a nosy person myself, I could tell it was actually made right) and the owner was quick to apologize, take it off her bill, and offer her something else. I thoroughly enjoy this place. The food is both healthy and filling. The atmosphere is airy and refreshing; something this area has been missing. Congrats to the young man who built it from the ground up and thank you for making my childhood home a bit better. It gives me a reason to visit my parents (unlike the Ledge). My only complaint is the chocolate mint cupcake; taste a bit like tooth paste. :(

Say at the counter, service was very quick, polite, friendly. Quick refill of coffee when I was running low. I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet with breakfast potatoes and cinn raisin toast. The breakfast potatoes were amazing. Perfectly seasoned with rosemary and other various spices, cut up into small wedges and cooked perfectly. The omelet was very good with plenty of bacon and the toast was obviously homemade and was very good as well. The coffee was very good and wasn't typical diner coffee. My girlfriend ordered the French toast that came with 6 slices that was a homemade bread with a blueberry compote on the side. She said it was to die for and ate the whole thing (she usually does not finish a whole plate). She stole some of my potatoes and said the same thing, they were perfect and the best she's had. All in all, I would defiantly come back. We came in on a Sunday morning, plenty of on street parking and plenty of space in the restaurant where you can seat yourself. Great job. Look forward to coming back!

I am stoked that there's a cute place occupying this space. I was in on a Monday of a holiday and the service was fine: attentive, relatively fast, and the food was good: eggs, bacon, toast, at a reasonable price. The cupcakes look amazing. I'm going to have to return on a day when I'm not running a race (or maybe I could return AFTER the race?). Kid friendly, but if you want to lower the decibel on that, the counter looked quieter and a place where you could linger. We had a surly-ish waitress. She should be behind the counter, as her attitude seemed to fit just perfectly there. Otherwise, I'll return. Nice work, Lower Mills!!

A DBC (Dorchester by Choice) resident, I was thrilled that my friend introduced me to this delightful new spot. From the moment the door opened, I was sold. The charming atmosphere, attentive staff, and "it's impossible to have order envy" menu are reasons why I'll return. The large coffee mugs were a bonus as I hate running low on diesel mid-meal! The GM, Patrick, checked in to see how our biscuit and grits, omelet, and half salad/half panini combo rated and he was met with "delish" reviews. I'll be back...and am happy to hear there is a DOT DEAL to be had...pastries are on sale after 2pm and the "better the next day" bread basket is tempting!

I loved their baked goods! The strawberry cream puff and strawberry shortcake cupcakes are divine. They would get 4 1/2 stars from me if they only did baked goods but their brunch leaves a LOT to be desired. While they have good ideas it sometimes falls short on flavor. Avoid the home fries at all cost. The service is usually great and the restaurant is impeccably neat. I love the chalkboard paint that they use to make changing up the decor easier.

I would highly recommend the pastries and baked goods here, however I would not recommend the breakfast. I went here for breakfast and got the eggs Benedict, which were not great. The eggs were way undercooked. I asked for the eggs cooked over easy and the waitress said they were unable to do that because they were microwaved. However, I decided I would try the meal anyway. I do not mind yolk of the egg runny but the egg white was still runny and less than appetizing. The coffee was good, though! On my way out, I got some desserts to-go, which were delicious! I had the cannoli, a fudge brownie, and a cheesecake brownie which were all fantastic. The desserts were very fresh. The service was good- my waitress was very pleasant. The atmosphere was also nice- clean and new. I sat at a long high-top table by the front window which was strange because several parties were sitting at the one long table, rather close to eachother. I was not crazy about that. Overall, it was an okay experience. I would definitely go back for coffee, bakery items, and desserts, but probably not for breakfast or lunch.

Finally, the old Common Ground has reopened as a bakery/brunch/lunch spot. Wahoo! Unfortunately, it's going to take some significant tweaks to get me back again. The interior is sort of a modern, minimilist diner feel with bar/counter seating, window high tops, and a large basic table service section. Pretty similar to the old Common Ground layout (minus the nests, whittled chairs, and bearded petrouli-scented servers which have since been replaced with your average Dorchester lifer.) Sure they have only been open a few days, and maybe they plan to add stuff to the walls or whatnot, but allow me to suggest a few improvements: 1. I sat at the bar/counter and ordered an iced tea. I received a plastic Arizona bottle out of the cooler with a glass of ice. Meh. One thing that the old Common Ground did well was make their own iced tea...and it was amazing. It's literally the easiest thing in history and you can display the jugs on the table behind the bar...instead of nothing there right now. I can get an Arizona at the Four Provinces lottery joint next door. Not saying much... 2. There is NOTHING on the walls as of yet. Like I said before, the simple addition of some local art or photographs would only improve the experience. Why not? 3. I ordered the turkey bacon sandwich with avocado and some other stuff. First, there was no avocado on it. Second the top slice of bread (homemade btw, nice) was about 2 inches thick compared to 1/4 inch on the bottom. Same went for the two tomato slices inside. Bizarre. It was tough to eat because of all this, but regardless, the sandwich would have been a C in perfect form. Also, pretty sure the turkey was that waterlogged kind you see behind the grocery store glass stewing in its own plastic wrapped juices. Worst kind. Just roast your own. It's not that hard. 4. They served homefries with my sandwich. Hmmmm, ok. It was 1pm on a Tuesday, and I didn't expect that. Can't quite understand the reasoning. Simple FF's or chips would have been much better and expected, not a leftover from breakfast. All that said, the service was good and everyone seemed attentive to all the tables there. Positive to see right away. I actually mentioned some of my gripes to the woman behind the counter when she asked and the manager came to talk to me about it. Without even knowing, he comped me a discount on the bill because of the flaws above. I was in no way expecting something like that, but good practice. There are growing pains in any new biz so maybe things will change. Hope so. In the meantime, I will be heading to The Plate over in Milton for the best sandwiches around bar-none.

Sweet Life is a much needed breath of fresh air to the Lower Mills business district. The food is good and priced reasonably. The interior is open and clean with table and bar seating. What really makes me give five stars is the level of service that I have received each time that I've been here.....AMAZING! The staff and the manager have met my needs every time without me having to ask for a single thing. Of all the restaurants in the Ashmont/Lower Mills area, Sweet Life is by far the best the area has to offer in terms of quality, price, and customer service.

FInally made a first visit to this place Saturday morning, thinking I was just going to have a cup of coffee. WRONG! The food looked so good I had to order - got the hash and eggs, absolutely delicious. The coffee was excellent and comes in a large cup which is a huge plus. The art on the walls was fabulous, and necessitated a walk around the place to see it all. I love the seating options - counter, window, tables - making this a place that works for a solo visit or a meeting up of friends. Everyone was super friendly and happy - always a good sign. I think management could work on speeding up service (everything VERY slow to get to table) and having wait staff more visible (maybe you need more? The place was packed) but these are minor tweaks, and really why are we always in such a hurry anyway???. I will definitely make this a regular stop, and am thrilled to have this great place thriving in Dorchester. I hope all of you who gave it low marks will try again!

Stopped by for breakfast. It's nice to have a breakfast spot within walking distance. The staff is extremely nice. The food is good - had the "Make Your Own Omelet." While the onions were cut larger than I like it was good with great portion size. Definitely a place worth stopping by and hanging out. Sit at the bar if you want the community feel and hospitality.

I would like to give this place a good review however, it is extremely weak in its service. When you walk in the atmosphere is cute and quaint. Food is good and you want it to be a good neighborhood place to call your own. A place you bring your out of town guests but with poor service it is hard to take after a while. Service is ill timed. Yesterday, I went to get breakfast and they were not even full and it took 10 minutes to have someone come over and get my drink order. The waitress brought over pastries to the couple next to us and said sorry for the wait. Did not acknowledge us. But did not even bring water and we continued to wait. She came and took the order but we continued to sit without any contact. The servers don't have a sense of urgency and have bad timing. I come from the service industry and it is apparent they need more processes and structure.

The Sweet Life Bakery was exactly what my boyfriend and I were looking for this weekend!! We needed great rye bread and left with rye bread, rolls, a breakfast scone, an apple turnover and ice coffees. The pastries were delicious and the coffee was perfect!! While the order took some time to complete, the man behind the counter was doing his best to be efficient and friendly to customers. We will be returning to Sweet Life soon!

I give Sweet Life Bakery & Cafe 5 stars for the incredible wedding cake they created for us with a week's notice. A three tier wedding cake in addition to a 1/2 sheet cake serving about 100 guests. Delicious in flavor, moist, and melt in your mouth texture. This cake easily rivaled creations of competitors such as Montillio's, Konditor Meister, and White's Bakery. Thank you Bethany & Kristin for a fabulous cake. You'll be seeing us again!

Good baked goods, but would like to see faster and friendlier service. Took about ten minutes for eggs with potatoes and toast on a weekday morning when there were not many customers. Cashier tends to be grumpy. Would like to see the use of Pandora or something similar without commercials because right now they have the radio on and there are constantly commercials, which takes away from the ambiance. They did do a nice job with the renovation before they opened - marble counters, lots of natural light, etc.

Oh, Sweet Life, I'd really love to love you, but there are some things that need to be worked out. The first time I came here was right before I went down to the airport to catch an early morning flight. I wanted to grab some breakfast before I got there to avoid the prices. I ordered an egg and turkey sausage sandwich. The wait for it took forever. I was scared it might make me late for my flight. A good 15-20 minutes went by before I got it and I dashed into the car. I was sorely disappointed by the sandwich. While huge, it was completely flavorless. The eggs had no salt or pepper on them and were totally bland and slightly rubbery. The turkey sausage was the same - absolutely no taste. The second time, I got a tea cake from the bakery. To me, tea cakes are dense, but moist, and lightly sweetened to complement the tea. The tea cake was way too sweet and dry. We ate a couple slices and actually ended up tossing most of it. It was just too sweet and dry to be edible. Third time I got a chicken Caesar wrap for lunch. The wait for the sandwich was also really long. It tasted fine but the wrap was held together by toothpicks. I've rolled plenty of wraps and burritos during my college days to know that you should not need a toothpick to hold it together. Since toothpicks are inedible, my wrap fell apart as soon as I took it out. The sandwich came with a small side of chips, which were also fine. I also picked up a loaf of the day old multigrain bread, which was really tasty. This past weekend I went with some family for brunch. The seating situation is really disorganized. I think they need to hire a hostess to seat people instead of this self-seating stuff. My aunts and I found seats at the bar near the window, but it was not clean and the check for the previous patrons, with the tip inside, was still on the table. We waited for almost 10 minutes for someone to notice us and clear off the table, but no one did. The man sitting next to us sat down around the same time we did, and finally got up to track someone down to get him coffee. The waitress bought the coffee, but still didn't realize there were people still waiting for service. We considered leaving, but finally saw a table in the back open up. Once we sat down there, the table was cleaned and the same waitress came to greet us. All of us ordered French toast, sausage and eggs. One aunt got plain toast, the other with blueberries and strawberries, and I got chocolate chips. My food was really tasty. I tasted the strawberries for my aunt's toast and it was cloyingly sweet and pretty much inedible. Totally syrup laden. They were able to come up with some sugar-free syrup for her, though. Even with the spotty service, we ended up enjoying the meal. Overall, I will keep going to Sweet Life. They seem be making improvements on the food, but need to work on the service. I think they could be a great addition to the neighborhood, and I'd like to try a few of the other baked goods.

service from the first time I have gone to the final time I have gone is Unorganized, and inefficient . As a someone in the hospitality industry I can see so many areas that they could improve . raw pancakes slow service incomplete orders , poor timing and knowledge of the menu. I truly want this place to work such potential but every time it fails to live up to it . I might give it one more try . On the positive great menu and location needs a friendly neighborhood restaurant to call its own . I jut don't want to be embarrassed when I suggest it .

I visited Sweet Life for brunch two weeks in a row - it was that good. The food was delicious (I had the buttermilk sweet stack both times). The service was friendly, especially at the breakfast bar the second time I went back. The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon with a book. I will definitely be returning to this neighborhood establishment.

Great experience at the bakery here this morning. Interior was clean, bright, and attractive. The cashier was polite and friendly, even though my husband dithered over his order for a good five minutes. Cookie samples were available and really excellent. I ended up getting a cupcake and my husband had a cookie and iced tea. The cupcake was moist and had a delicious, slightly tart icing that fit it perfectly (I like a little complexity in my sweets). The iced tea was good -- clearly brewed from actual leaves, which is not always the case. The prices were reasonable, perhaps a little lower than typical Boston prices. We'll be coming back to check out the breakfast.

Finally made my way to this newish little spot and am so delighted to find another nice spot to eat in our neighborhood. I love the layout, as there is plenty of variety in the seating. Being alone today, I chose a seat at the counter, but there was plenty of variety for duos and groups. I came in for an iced coffee, but got drawn in to the nice sandwich menu and ended up with a delicious turkey, avocado and bacon sandwich on fresh sourdough. I had a cupcake to go for desert (yummy). It took a few minutes for the server to realize I was there because it is a nice and casual "seat yourself", but after that the service was warm, friendly, and prompt. I will definitely be back to try their breakfast on Sunday morning. No more driving to Southie or Braintree for special occasion sweets either. yeah!

I live very close to this place so was SUPER excited to find out it was opening... If you don't have a car in this area there aren't too many choices - especially for breakfast. It's not the most amazing breakfast I've ever had, but it's pretty solid.. I've been three times and every time the food was pretty tasty and the wait staff was excellent! Very friendly and attentive. It's super cute inside and very reasonably priced... Plus they have yummy baked goods! I'm a fan :)

Lower Mills needed a good breakfast cafe, and after a few growing pains, this place is starting to hit it's stride. The breakfasts have really improved since they opened. I particularly like the Mediterranean Omelet, the breakfast sandwich and the Irish Eggs (but oof, it's huge). Coffee, always excellent. The place is a great bet for breakfast. Lunch is hit and miss. The grilled cheese was underwhelming, as it appeared to have been pressed in a panini (you're supposed to GRILL grilled cheese, right?) and the result was unmelted cheese and terribly dry bread. The french dip is substantial but the au jus is inconsistent, yesterday it tasted like almost pure vinegar, or Ponzu. The Grilled chicken and pesto sandwich is a winner. The tomato-basil soup is tasty but the beef stew is watery. I think the weak link is the breads used in the sandwiches, which is suprising in a bakery (I have not tried the baked goods, not a cake fan). Kevin is a super nice manager, and the service is consistently friendly, and good. The place is spotless, and the marble lunch counter with plenty of Boston Heralds is a nice touch. It's a great neighborhood addition, and I'm sure it will see further success. Just keep working on the sandwiches...

I have never been to this bakery nor heard of it, until my coworker came in and asked if I wanted a macaroon. I am Jewish and have always had this aversion to macaroons based on the Manischewitz ones that are a Passover staple. Blech! I was skeptical and tried one. These were moist, flavorful, and delicious! I'm it helped that it was dipped in dark chocolate, but WOW! I am a changed woman and would go out of my way to go there now to get more of these or other pastries. I can't speak to the service, but the products are great!

I really wanted this place to be our new breakfast place. We also went here against my better judgment after reading all these reviews. We went for breakfast and glad there was more than just pastries and coffee. Coffee cups were bigger than normal, yay! And coffee was good. We ordered a full breakfast, eggs, bacon, oatmeal. The waitstaff was adequate. No one came back to ask us how the food was. The kid realized the pancakes were 'off' and we confirmed after trying to cut into them. Is there no baking soda in the mix? They were dense and hard to cut. Weird. Food was mediocre for the price. For 30 bucks we just expected something more. Pastries and bakeries looked yummy and reasonably priced. Staff looked like they enjoyed being here which speaks to good management. Probably could have put some more fun into decorations as we were laughing at the paper plates with pumpkins on them serving as the decorations. I don't frequent places for their decor but was at Amhreins recently and they did such a nice job with the foliage decor that I couldn't help but compare. We probably won't be back besides coming to buy pastries for take out. We were looking for an excellent breakfast at this price.

Amazing chicken pesto omelet! Coffee is served in nice cups and promptly refilled. They even give soy milk to go in the coffee. Grits are to die for! I would go back just for them! Their cupcakes looked amazing, but I was full from brunch so I didn't get any this time :)

This is such a wonderful place to stop just for coffee and dessert or for a great meal! The atmosphere is very inviting and so well designed for individuals or groups to enjoy. I've been here twice now and have been very pleased with my meals and the service. And I must tell you, the lemon squares are to die for...best I've ever had!! I can highly recommend a visit to The Sweet Life, you won't be disappointed! I'm looking forward to the lemon bars on my next visit, heard they are even better than the squares???

Food was mediocre at best. Service was pretty slow and completely disorganized. I waited well over 30 minutes for my food to come out. I had a steak and egg dish with a side of pancakes.... Waitress wasn't around long enough to ask for water, coffee refills, butter/jelly for my toast. By the time we finished our food the pancake I ordered at this point an hour prior still had not been brought out. Overall decor was nice, place was kept pretty clean but service needs serious improvement, food again was so so.

Unfortunately the breakfast has gone downhill. We've been twice since it opened and probably won't go back. The quality of food has gotten a lot worse and the old woman behind the bar doesn't belong there. Specifically, the eggs are so overdone and don't taste like real eggs. The potatoes are undercooked and flavorless. The beans on the Irish Breakfast are sugary baked beans which clearly implies an incompetent cook in the kitchen. And all items are a few bucks more than an ordinary greasy spoon diner.

I just had brunch at Sweet Life today. After reading some of the reviews, we were a bit skepticle, but figured we need to make our own impression of the bakery. After walking in, we sat our selves at a high top table. The atmosphere is very cute and clean. We were there a few minutes before a very nice young man came over to greet us and ask if we had been helped yet. We responded saying we had not and he was very kind to ask us if we needed a drink and brought over silverware. He let us know our server's name and said she would be over shortly to help us. We waited much more than a minute or two - maybe almost 10 minutes before we decided to sit at the breakfast bar. If there were no spots available at the bar, we were ready to leave. Luckily, our experience only become more positive at the bar after the unnecessary waiting game at the high top table. Maureen was working behind the breakfast bar and she acknowleged the fact that we had to move from our table to the bar because we were never waited on by our server. It was obvious she was not pleased about it, but remained professional with a smile on her face. She was very kind and super helpful. She was able to take our order right away and seemed happy to be working there. She helped to turn our earlier experience around very quickly. We ordered the hot chocolate that wasn't quite hot, but was delish. (if only it could be hotter next time) We got the irish breakfast, it was nothing specataular, but was not bad. We also ordered the eggs and grits, which was not bad, and a panckake. The breakfast food overall is nothing amazing, but it is not bad. Most of the food was not very hot, it was almost as if it were waiting around a little too long before being brought out. It could have been worse. The thing that stands out the most about this place is the service (expect maybe our server who we never met because she had us waiting for so long). Everyone that we did engange with was wonderful. They are very helpful and extremely friendly. They make they exerience of going to Sweet Life that much better. The service of this place truly speaks volumes for wanting to go back. We did get a couple pastries from the bakery which were good/delish and we didn't have to worry about them being hot. The prices are pretty reasonable, having breakfast and sides, hot chocolate as well as about 4 to go pastries, we spent less than $40 (2 guests). Overall, I think Sweet Life is a bonus to Lower Mills and a cute establishment. We will try the lunch menu next time and see how that goes. There are def more pastries that I would love to try. I know one thing though, the service - especially at the bar- will be wonderful. The rating for Sweet Life is mostly based on the wonderful staff. Food would be about a 3.

I took a friend to lunch at Sweet Life today, What a mistake! After 25 minutes had passed and our food had not arrived, I asked the waitress when we would be getting it. Her response "soon." Sayonara!

Love the food, especially the bakery. It is quality, fresh, homemade goodness! You get SO much more than you paid for. The cookies, cakes and muffins are as fresh and moist as they come. My only minor complaint is that when I have sat down to eat a meal, service is always slow as there seems to only be one or two waitresses managing the whole floor. On a positive note, you can definitely tell the waitresses are hard working and are trying their best!

Don't waste your time at Sweet Life. There are numerous places in the area where you can get good breakfast food and have a better experience than this place. My first trip was painful and I attributed it to the growing pains of a new business. I went a second time about a week ago and unfortunately nothing had improved. The food is good and cheap - that I will say. I will also say that the Host works very hard and is very friendly. But aside from that, I have struggled with the waitstaff which seems very distracted and confused (both times). I think the place has potential - it's clean and fresh and I love the decor.

The pastries are way too sweet and the coffee is poor. If you load up your coffee with cream and sugar, you won't notice.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The informal space and fireplace encourage you to stay for an additional cup of coffee after finishing your meal. The wait staff is friendly and efficient - always willing to discuss their latest favorite from the kitchen. I would recommend the cappuccino and any of the omelets.

Signed up for Yelp specifically to notify others about my horrible experience at this hellhole of an establishment. While the staff was somewhat friendly, upon our first order of drinks we came to realize what type of restaurant/bakery this was. Very good chance this place should be shut down. Unsanitary. When waiting for our table we were not greeted by any of the staff, but pushed aside so one of the rude waitress could get to her table. Seated and the 3 of us ordered drinks... 3 iced coffees (2 flavored, 1 regular)all delivered to the wrong people. My friend ordered tomato juice and it had MOLD in it! Chunks of MOLD! All we got was 1 I'm sorry from our waitress, nothing else. 2 out of the three orders came out incorrect at breakfast. The French toast was very poor and someone changed out the sugar with salt. My fruit never came and the waitress forgot twice. I've had better pancakes and French toast from a freezer. Asking for the manager she was uninformed and only offered us cookies and to take the moldy juice off our bill. Top 2 worst restaurant experiences of my life. Strongly encourage anyone considering to go elsewhere and to discourage anyone from this establishment.

Incredibly talented and wonderful staff. The custom made Marvel superhero cake that I ordered for my boyfriend's Birthday was nothing short of perfection. The craftsmanship was on point, and the cake itself was absolutely delicious! Moist, bold flavors and the buttercream was divine. I encourage everyone who reads this to give them your business, you will not be let down. Thank you Sweet Life!

Well I thought I would take my family to a spot I love. well how sad that we waited FOREVER! There were no drink refills until I asked 34 min after we ordered and they didn't even refill everyone! I am sad and disappointed because this is somewhere I have always enjoyed even got my favorite waiter. not sure we will be revisiting. And we are still waiting for our food!!

The only thing that I get her is the corn beef hash. It is amazing. They use crash corn beef and not from the can. It tastes so much better that way. The sausage links taste amazing here. There is a bakery here so the bread is always fresh. I never had a problem here. Only a few times when the service was slow but I lived. The place always looks clean. I come on the morning to eat at the dinner. I love the marble top.

I love to support my neighborhood and local businesses and decided to give SweetLife a chance. Got here service started off great, helped me connect to their free wifi smiles and cheer all around. When the food came I no longer saw my server and it wasn't busy either. It took 2 reminders to bring me my coffee and my omelette wasn't an omelette - it was a flat egg folded over with veggies stuck in the middle and grease flowed on my plate. The cheese wasn't even melted. I explained this to my server (when I tracked him down) and he said that was how the make them. IHOP does it better. Not once was I offered another alternative he just walked away. But you can catch him chatting it up in the kitchen. I probably will come here again but I will definitely get another server.

Very mediocre place. Just go here for breakfast. Menu choices are bland. Service is average. Had the burger and it was overcooked (ordered medium) with herbed potatoes. The burger wasn't horrible but just average. Not open for dinner which is a missed opportunity for this establishment . I can't believe they've been open this long and haven't ironed out the operational deficiencies.

For the price you pay at this bakery, Sweet Life isn't that bad. In fact, I like coming here. I generally come just for the bread, and like the Irish brown bread and brioche the most. The brown bread is rustic and very hearty. A slice of that will keep you filled. The brioche, while could use a bit more butter and egg, is a good value. A small brioche a tete for 50 cents is bargain (two are good for a light breakfast). The brioche comes in different sizes, and they're pretty well-priced as well. The pain de mie is standard bread...nothing special. I've had the apricot and raspberry cookies and both are good filling, while having a moist cookie. The cupcakes are fine, though aren't really my favorites. For lunch, I did enjoy the chicken salad on brioche. The chicken salad was simple and didn't have all the fanciness that a Waldorf has, which is fine with me. Apples, grapes, and walnuts should not be in a chicken salad. The chicken and dumplings soup was warm, hearty, full of chicken and dumplings, along with vegetables. Table service is good, while counter service for baked goods is inconsistent. One day, you'll have prompt service at the counter, the next you'll be waiting 5 minutes even though there is no one in front of you. You'll be wondering if everyone disappeared into the bread abyss. I'll try brunch sometime when I get the chance. Underrated bakery...but needs a website.

This is an update on my previous review. Unfortunately the quality of the food has been inconsistent every time we have gone there. While service was not great when they first opened, they have been open for a while now and it has not gotten better! We actually walked out today after being seated with menus and not having our order taken for over 10 minutes -- because there were just two servers in the place running around frantic...on a Sunday! I do still like their bakery and have no complaints there. Wish they could work on service and consistency in prep of items on the menu.

I've given Sweet Life many, many, many tries. The word that comes to mind about this place is: inconsistency. Actually, the one thing that's consistent is the poor attitudes & screw-ups at the counter, especially the lady with the bright red hair. However, the waiters are nice when I have dined there. As for the food, one day I'll order something and it'll be great. The next time I order it, it's overcooked/undercooked and/or has zero flavor. I've tried a plethora of their baked goods and find them to be sugary yet lacks flavor. The cupcakes are dry and lacks flavor, but there's a lot of icing, which is delicious (maybe to make up for the dry cupcakes - who knows?). I believe this place has a lot of potential for being great (and on a consistent basis), but don't know if the changes it needs will take place for it to be great. So, I won't be going back, not anytime soon anyway.

I really want to give SL 3.5 stars, but I'd rather give a small business owner the extra bump. Food is not really four, though, sorry. Let's give it the half star for effort, ok? *see below for how I change my own mind by the end of this review, lol. It's a totally lovely neighborhood joint with a big marble counter & friendly staff (a bit hit or miss on staffing. Either really prompt and attentive, or you sit there for 10 minutes hoping some one is going to give you a menu and remember that you asked for no ice in your water....) but the foods just a few degrees shy of making me actually Want to go there to eat. It's more that it's great you are already in the hood and don't want to travel for basic breakfast. Granted, the BLT was very good, particularly the bread; actaully- here's the deal, very nice bakery. Great bread. Well, what do you know- I actually want to go there to get bread. Well, yelp therapy, thanks for helping me work through that- they deserve their 4 starts. Take some bread home.

The service here is not great at all! The cashier did not greet me or even smile once. The manager selectively spoke to customers (clearly ones she had a relationship with outside of the restaurant). I visited this place a year ago and was hoping the service improved, I am disappointed to say that it has NOT improved!

Food is okay. Service is awful. You have to seat yourself and you better make sure you don't leave one empty seat at your table or they will make you move. We had a group of three and sat at a table for four. There was no one in line waiting and the miserable woman server made us get up. I'll never go back. Food quality isn't good enough to made up for the awful service.

Decent neighborhood brunch place with a takeout bakery on one side and a limited café-style seating, table service. The menu is halfway between diner and full-on high urban brunch, with some food specialties on top of standard fare but no mimosas or bloody marys. We had pretty decent food - the corned beef hash was made fresh, the pancakes had a little style, the omelets were tasty (the chicken pesto-goat cheese was moderately original), portions were large but the sides were sparse (two half-pieces of yummy wheat bread with the omelet), fail on the genuine maple syrup test. The service was a bit eccentric on a busy morning, though. They seemed to have both too many people, and not enough, working on clearing and rearranging tables, as we waited for our somewhat larger party. It was a bit bemusing to see one person try to clear a single large table from a previous party while three apparently had specialty jobs of some sort clearing a single table. Then when they put two tables together, they rotated their orientation to make it squareish instead of rectangular, which made it cramped for eight to sit. The server then forgot what the specials were...and didn't go check when asked. I could chalk this all up to a slight disorganization in the face of the rush but in context I think they have some things to work out in the front of the house. That said, this was the real sort of amusingly odd part of our visit: they ran out of menus. I've eaten at restaurants thousands of times in my lifetime, really a soberingly large number of times when I think about it. And I cannot remember a single time I have ever been told upon being seated "we ran out of menus" until I came to Sweet Life. We're not talking photocopied daily special sheets, we're talking regular menus in the plasticized menu covers. It's not that big a place. So we had eight people ordering off a single menu. Needless to say it took a long time to get our order in, and in turn the food took a while to come up, although for brunch we weren't in a rush so it didn't matter to us (although table turnover, when you have a line, should always be a concern to the restaurant manager.) How exactly do you run out of menus in a place that seats thirty or so people? I'm sure there's a story there but I'm not creative enough to come up with an explanation. Maybe we should have a contest.

As I sit here waiting for my food (it's been an hour and 15 min since we've sat down) I decided to be productive and write this review. Place is really cute. But after having been seated, brought drinks and had our order taken, we've largely been ignored. Our drinks long gone are sustaining us only on melted ice. We've asked a passing server for a refill but that was about fifteen minutes ago. I can't comment on the food since we haven't received it yet but other peoples' food looks fairly good. Update: an hour and a half after being seated, our breakfast arrived. Everything was decent. Nothing was spectacular. And nothing was at all worth the unreasonable wait. A definite disappointment.

When was the last time you went to breakfast in Boston and it wasn't packed? 2 hour wait for toast and eggs?? Pretty normal right?! Well, I am happy to report that this place did not have that problem at all and it was a refreshing change. The ambiance is nicely done and the street parking was easy. We were seated quickly and the service was extra friendly. We loved our food and the coffee was perfect. Prices were average and the dessert treats in the to go area looked great. I am sad I didn't get one to take for later. I really enjoyed it and I know we'll be back.

I sat at the counter for brunch. My service was very good I was surprised to see the reviews about poor service. I was offered coffee immediately and I got newspaper without asking. I ordered a regular breakfast; that is two eggs over easy with toast, bacon and potatoes. The homemade bread is amazing. The eggs were perfect and the bacon was well done without any black. The potatoes were not my favorite. They were well season but needed more time on the grill I can also say that the coffee was very good

I'm not sure what exactly has happened to this once great little place. I used to eat here a few times a week, and in fact posted a glowing review.. I do know this, that I have walked out of here twice out of the last three times because the service is ridiculous. This morning I stopped in for breakfast and there were NO CLEAN TABLES. So I sat at the counter. And waited. And waited. And waited. No one. At the counter?! Two men came in behind me, cleared off a place for themselves at a table and sat. Almost immediately a waitress handed them menues. So now the only way you get served is to clear the plates of the person that was there before you???!!!! No thanks. I left and will not return, and it's a shame because the food is good.

Came here with a friend on his recommendation for a late brunch and was not disappointed. Some of the best French toast I've ever had. Everything was really fresh. Service was quick and friendly, even had a chat with Mike, the owner, as we set at the bar for our meal. I'll definitely be back if I'm ever up this way again.

A simple menu that delivers, delicious pastries and espresso drinks, friendly service, a bright, warm, welcoming and clean atmosphere. Sweet life is a great neighborhood place to go and get some work done over a cup of coffee, read a book or catch up with a friend for lunch. I once had like three iced chais in one sitting because they were so good. Only thing I would ask for is a bigger menu with maybe some more adventurous/ local/ organic options? But for a small kitchen their menu is not bad at all! Do stop in.

Today I went to here for the second time ever. It's a local place, and I've stopped in for coffee a few times as I work down the street. First time I went to Sweet Life, we were a party of 10+ and the service was exceptionally slow, slow but friendly. We chalked it up to it recently opening, and revisited today for 6 adults and one child. The restaurant was moderately busy, still some open tables available. We sat down at 1130 and ordered our menu items at approximately 1145. It was clear the staff was having trouble keeping up with the flow, and the kitchen was slow getting food out. We sat patiently waiting for our breakfast. Around 1230, our friendly waiter stopped by to apologize for the delay, and said our food would be up momentarily. About 15 minutes later, still no food, and others who sat after us were receiving their meals. At 1pm, AN HOUR AND A HALF after arriving at the restaurant, we approached the woman who sat us, and she said she'd go into the kitchen and check on the ticket. A few moments later she emerged, and informed us that the ticket never went through, and our food had yet to be processed. We are a patient family, and understand mistakes. BUT, 90+ minutes, a hungry one year old, and 6 starving adults does not make for happy campers. At that moment, we got up and started out the door, and one member of our party looking at the other and saying "What a joke". What happened next was insane. The manager, or presumably owner, was walking by at the time and started screaming at our party, things like "It's not a joke... The ticket never went through... You haven't been here that long!" The interaction between this person and a member of party became loud, the entire restaurant staring, and us leaving immediately- without paying for our coffees. We will NEVER return here. Clearly the customer does not come first at the Sweet Life and waiting 90+ minutes for BREAKFAST is the norm. The owner/manager person is a disgrace to the service industry, and I can only imagine that we are not the first group of patrons he has pushed out the door.

Good concept, tasty food, but management appears to be lacking...This was my second visit and on both occasions I visited, the service was less than par. A lot could be said here regarding my less than satisfactorily experience, but I was able to convey it directly to the owner who unfortunately wasn't too receptive of my feedback. He said the lack of service on my second occasion was due to a shortage of staff, but I pointed out the service was lacking also during the first visit. This is a fairly new locale to the area and is great for the neighborhood, but it remains to be seen how long it will last, or more important how profitable it will be if the service and attentiveness to details does not improve. Now I'm off to another eatery where I know for certain the service will be great and the food always delicious!

My favorite neighborhood gem! A quick 10 minute walk from my house adds to the favoritism. The staff is always friendly, the environment is very familial. Dorchester has always been very diverse so it's always good to see a variety of different food establishments in my neighborhood (the crowds are also); quite comical and heartwarming honestly. You can't go wrong with the food. The menu is pretty generic and there should always be something you like. The food is GREAT. I love it. That's why I always go back lol. If you live in Dorchester, take advantage of the nice restaurants booming up around us. More than usual.

A friend of mine who lives in Milton suggested that we stop by Sweet Life for lunch (as a reward for donating blood to the Red Cross earlier that day). I'm so glad that we ended up at Sweet Life. We took 2 seats at the bar, because the restaurant was packed. I had a goat cheese salad made into a wrap. (It was amazingly tasty!) My friend, who has dietary restrictions, was able to get a gluten free omelet made for her "without cheese, and with every vegetable you have available". The waitress even gave her a fruit cup instead of bread. (Bread has gluten in it.) The staff was friendly and attentive. I hope to be back soon to try other delicious looking breakfast & lunch choices.

For an Easter Sunday treat, I thought trying someplace new would be fun. I'm just in the next neighborhood over so Sweet Life seemed like a decent choice for an iced coffee and some take out breakfast food. Because of the Yelp reviews, I did hesitate before driving over. But... I convinced myself to give it a try. The inside is lovely, great style and atmosphere. Sweet Life would REALLY benefit from an online menu! I hmmm'ed and hawww'ed with the menu before deciding. Sausage egg and cheese for the guy and an egg, bacon and home fries platter for me. The take out counter waitstaff were impatient, unfriendly and disorganized. I'm convinced I was overcharged and never received a receipt for either of my purchases (made an impulse buy of cupcakes because they looked so good). I would have given a 2 star review... But those impulse buy cupcakes were fantastic! Just devoured the red velvet and I can't be too mad at Sweet Life despite the let down with the food and service. So the breakfast food wasn't epic and the whole business operation needs an over haul, but I'd give this place another try in the future.

I like coming here because there's never a long line like at Newcomb's or McKenna's, and I do like stopping in during the week for an egg sandwich on a croissant or for an iced caramel macchiato and it's so close to home. Since they offer free wi-fi, I thought it would be a great place to come and have breakfast and do some work. Little did I know that even though this places closes at 5pm, they stop serving breakfast at 11:30am, really? Why not keep the breakfast menu available all day since they don't serve dinner. I miss my breakfast spot back in Long Beach, CA, it closed at 3pm, but served breakfast all day and a cash only spot. I would give this place a 5 star if breakfast was served all day and a 4 if my wait person didn't just decide to go sit and chat without letting me know another server was available.

Food is delicious, but service was incredibly slow for a late Saturday breakfast (after morning rush). The portions are generous. I had the chicken pesto omelette, which did not come with the goat cheese noted on the menu. The server never came back to check on us, though. The pancakes are large and fluffy. The rosemary potatoes were okay; I would have preferred them to be crispy rather than soft. The bacon was crisp (I hate thin cheap bacon, and judge all breakfast placed by their bacon). I've been here once before and had no issues, so I'm rating it 4 stars for taste.

Would give zero stars if possible. Ordered food and waited while larger parties who arrived after us were served and left before having our food delivered COLD and order incomplete. Mentioned to waitress that food was cold and that items were missing. She grabbed plate, made no apology and disappeared. Ten more minutes later plate which had been microwaved reappears and food is now not even edible. Still incomplete order. And no explanation. A second waitress appears and I explain situation. She at least apologizes and returns to kitchen. Eventually brings missing item which at this point I refuse. Both waitresses are now grumbling and avoiding our table. Are you kidding me? You treat us horribly after screwing up our order? Never again will we come here.

I ordered a cake for my son's post graduation dinner celebration at the suggestion of the Ashmont Grill (where we had dinner) and was beyond pleased. Not only did I need to rush my mom over to pick up the cake at the very last minute (graduation ran later than I thought) but they were willing to keep the drawer open an extra 15 mins - on a Sunday - in the event she got stuck and was late). Greatly apreciated.. The red velvet cake I ordered was, and I do not say this lightly when it comes to sweets, the best cake I have ever tasted. It was delicious! My family who were "too stuffed" after dinner suddenly found room when they tasted it. The cream cheese frosting was absolutely droolworthy, creamy, slightly tangy and not tooth achingly sweet. The cake was moist and divine. I would drive out of my way to order a cake from here in the future.

Love this place. Great neighborhood gem for breakfast, lunch, coffee, and bakery. My girlfriend and I come often for breakfast and have yet to be disappointed. My boyfriend ordered a cake for my 25th birthday from here. I was excited due to the fact the cake was from a bakery, and this would have been my first encounter of the Sweet Life bakery. The cake was beautiful, BUT the taste was bland. There was mountains of icing on the cake, then to top it off it was completely DRY. When I say dry I mean SALTINE CRACKER. The price and timing was excellent, I would give them 5 Stars only for that. Also, did I mention there was fruit in the middle yum, but the cake was very basic tasting. It was a waste of cake. Eventually we threw it out after a couple of days and went to Shaw's to buy a cake. ;)

I've been to this restaurant before and enjoyed the food. However, today's experience was an EPIC FAIL. I ordered a tomato juice and when it arrived I took a swig and realized there was something wrong. MOLD. Huge chunks of white and green mold. The sugar container was a mixture of sugar and salt. The French toast was awful. We complained to the manager- very very politely. There were soooo many things wrong with the meal. We were ready to just chalk it up to a bad day- until we received the check. In its entirety. Absolutely disturbing that after such a bad experience we were asked to pay for it. I sincerely hope the Board of Health reads emails because they are getting one from me regarding Sweet Life. It wouldn't let me leave zero stars or I clearly would have.

I would like to give this place no stars. There is no good place in the neighborhood to get good breakfast and every time I give this place a try they let me down. I walked in this morning and there were 3 employees in the place. The breakfast bar had one other patron, I waited for the waitress to clear the mess at a spot at the bar and she still didn't even acknowledge me, then I said good morning and she turned and walked in the back. At this point I was standing for about 2 minutes and couldn't believe how poor the attentiveness to guests was. I walked out and am now at the Plate in Milton which will now be where I get brunch and sandwiches.

Bottom line: the food is great, but the service is terrible. The waitresses were nice enough, they just did not know much about the menu and appeared to be heading in ten different directions. It looks like they need some leadership to help set some processes and standard and training on the menu.

What a nightmare. Speaking as a former food service professional, I can spot a disaster in the making. My mother invited me to breakfast on a Sunday around 9:30 morning.it took a long time to receive menus and an even longer time before a server came to us. We both ordered menu items that called for poached eggs one of them was a special of the day. When we finally received our food to our dismay the eggs were well done for both of our orders. My mother sent hers back and I tried to eat mine. It was clear that whoever was doing the cooking they did not know how to poach eggs. I mean why offer eggs Benedict as a special when no one can properly prepare the eggs? When we were finished it took at least 15 minutes for us to receive our check. No discount or anything applied to the bill even though we had to send food back to the kitchen. I got up and went to go speak to the manager on duty, this was not acceptable. After dealing with an argumentative staff member and then a management type person someone from the kitchen emerged. I do not know if this man is the owner or the cook or perhaps both. I explained to him that I had about 20 years experience in the food service industry and this was the worst meal I had ever had. He also was combative and not very friendly towards me. He actually tried to argue about the way the eggs were prepared. Long story short one of the nice servers there came up to us and told us we were all set the check is been taking care of. I'm sure that was done just to remove us from the property because at this time voices were getting loud. My mother and I love to go out to eat together but rest assured, we will never ever go to this establishment again.

I used to like this place. When it first opened - my go to breakfast spot was Newcombs Farm right up the street. I decided why not support my local business. It was fantastic upon first opening it's doors. The manager that was there when it first opened was no longer there and, the place seems to go down hill to me. The staff is not friendly especially when picking up. As a customer who you want their business you shouldn't be throwing a pen down on the table for me to sign the bill... I could go on for days but, as of today I make it a point to never step foot back in there again until there is new management/staff!

I went here on a weekday, mid day , to order a coffee. I've been wanting to check this place out and was very disappointed in the service. I want to preface this again, by stating it was a weekday and there was just a handful of people. I ended up at the bakery counter waiting 15 min for somebody to help me (there was no line) and was completely grossed out that the woman preparing my coffee (also handling food) had extra ordinary long acrylic nails. This may sound harsh, but this is completely unacceptable in a food establishment due to sanitary issues. Gross!!!!
