Got these on Sunday and they were still great on Monday. The line was quick. We tried: chocolate peanut butter:I thought it was too dense but my coworkers liked it lemon coconut: the favorite of the group. Perfect amount of both flavors and still a very soft doughnut chocolate raspberry: the least favorite of the group. Needed more of the chocolate flavor to me and another person thought it was strawberry vanilla glazed: I got this one as it was the most plain (I thought) and would be a good example of what they can do with the basics and it was great. Very vanilla-y but not overwhelming

Doughnut was soft and kind of chewy (in a good way). Not sure how to better describe that but I actually quite enjoyed it. Had the Vanilla Glaze which was not a very original flavor but it was the best thing that was available at the time I went. The glaze was a bit too sweet but all in all a good enough doughnut. It was also quite large -- not sure if that is a positive or a negative (ask me after I've stepped on the scale tomorrow). My one ask would be that the employee behind the desk cheer up a little. Sure it was the end of the day but wow, haven't had service that lethargic in a long time.

Blackbird Doughnuts recently expanded their hours, which meant I could finally check this off my "to-try" list without having to sacrifice a precious weekend sleep-in. However, neither of the two doughnuts I got hit the spot for me. My favorite way to enjoy a doughnut is plain and simple, a classic glazed doughnut. I was most disappointed with their Vanilla Glaze which had a hint of lemon that reads almost a little ginger-y to my ginger-adverse self. The better of the two doughnuts was the Black Raspberry White Chocolate. The flavor was less exciting than the name, as I only picked up on the raspberry flavor, but it was tasty enough for me. My qualm with both doughnuts though, was the texture. I like my doughnuts airy and fluffy, almost a little melty in texture. These doughnuts were quite dense and chewy--on a scale of doughnut to bagel, they fall somewhere in the middle. Overall, it was just okay and I'd rather not pay $3/doughnut for "just okay."

Very very mixed feelings. My girlfriend brought me home a box of a bunch of different kinds of donuts and I have something different to say for each one. Starting off, the Boston creme. While the ganache and the donut itself was pretty good (the chocolate was exceptionally rich), the cream was very lackluster. It just tasted to bland, there was hardly any sweetness at all. Next I had the coffee bacon donut and it was OK. Not bad, but the flavors were a bit unexpected. I say for this one try it, but personally, I'm not committed to it. It's good but weird. Third was the jalapeño cheddar and this one was my favorite. The sweetness of the donut and the heat of the pepper make thus really enjoyable and different from most other donuts. Definitely worth a try. Lastly, she brought home some of the mini jelly donut bites and these were my favorite. Sweet and refreshing, excellent treat. I remember they also had a salted toffee and that one NEEDS to come back. It was amazing.

Overpriced for what they are. At $3 a donut I was expecting an amazing donut. I tried 3 donuts which all used the same donut base and had different toppings. They were fine, but not $3 fine, in my opinion. I thought the plain donut part to be more reminiscent of a Krispy Kreme than an Ohlins Belmont or Union Square homemade taste. I doubt I will go back at the current pricing.

Keep spending most our lives, living in the hipsta's paradise... While this store is small and cute, the decor comes across as sterile and uninspiring. While I don't want sap like Sweet, the decor here wasn't a positive. I generally like cake donuts more than raised, but there weren't any of the former left. The Boston cream raised donut was okay, but a little light on the cream filling. The chocolate ganache is like the Boston cream but without the filling. Overall, the chocolate ganache was acceptable as it wasn't too sweet or made eating it too cloy. However, both donuts seem too much like eating air, but that may be my affinity for cake donuts. $3.00 for a donut, while large, is still a relatively foreign concept to me. If I'm going to spend that much for a couple of donuts, why couldn't I have gotten a small box? Now my donuts with chocolate ganache look so ungainly. I might give them another shot. However, for my money, I would rather go to Union Square Donuts.

*4.89 for "large" iced coffee?! WHAT?! *From a public health stand point, rich people are the only remaining class of people that are able to afford a life style not plagued by obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and all the other health issues that come with donuts and other sugary, fattening treats first thing in the morning. I think we should preserve the fact that we can afford to be healthy. Sorry, NOT a fan of this place.

This place was meh. Cute concept but I think donuts are just a craze. It was pretty expensive and it wasn't worth it. We got a chocolate ganache, lemon poppy seed, and the pizza donut. The chocolate ganache on the donut was good but the donut itself was meh. The pizza donut was a creative concept but underwhelming for the most part. The best was lemon poppy but I wouldn't go back because of how pricy it was.

  • Carolina N.

I went around 10 am on a Saturday and there were only 2 other people in line, which was shocking! I got the chocolate ganache, which I loved. I like that the doughnut itself isn't airy, but is more substantive and doughy. I also got iced coffee, and one of the women working there made me simple syrup, which was so so nice. This place was great.

Fresh donuts, unique flavours, great service. MMMMMMM donuts........ puts Dunkin' to shame.

    (4)
  • Carlo M.

Mehhhh. I'll give them props for the creative flavors, but two thumbs down for the donut freshness. In a town surrounded by Dunkin Donuts, you would think Blackbird would up their donut freshness game. Most definitely nothing to write home about.

  • Rachel N.

Well. I didn't regret putting it in my mouth. But, I'm not a huge doughnut person, so at best, I'm only a mediocre judge. Light rather than leaden, sweet but not saccharine - interesting flavors. Dark chocolate pomegranate and lemon glazed pistachio were our favorites - at $3 each, I'd need to spend at least $9 if I was to be full for more than an hour - but I think someone with a normal metabolism would be happy with 1-2 and a mug of coffee. No frills space, service is adequately friendly. If you feel like upping the pretension factor in your doughnut game, this isn't a bad place to help you with that noble quest.

Ok, the donuts were amazing. The salted toffee was perfect - not too sweet or too decadent, as can be the case with donut places trying to out-donut the other donut-ier joints. I did dive face first into a s'mores donut, just as my colleague decided to walk in my office - the mortification was totally worth it. The shop is not too ostentatious, a small counter with very friendly staff. The girl was training a new hire, who was also very sweet. You can see straight through onto the assembly line, which is cool. I dug it. As others have stated, the only issue I had was discovering upon presenting my score to fellow coworkers was Mario on the underside of the pretty cool looking exterior. Yes, the box was indeed a literal inside-out pizza box. I know Blackbird is new and all but invest .03% more in your presentation. This is your marketing, don't cheap out. My colleagues were stoked for the opportunity to try the newest donut-ier place but it was a bit sad to see an Italian pizza schlepper smiling at me, expressing his desire for me to eat his delicious pizza treat. Regardless, I'll be back.

Blackbird is the closet Donut shop to me and I really WANT to love it, but when I compare it to Union Square Donuts and Ohrins in Belmont, they just don't trump. The main sticking point for me is this: they don't have vegan donuts, and I am not even vegan anymore, but how can you be a gourmet donut shop without at least one vegan option. How how hard is it? The coffee rocks though, and I am a coffee snobby. ;-) i will go back to Blackbird, the donuts are gorgeous, the staff is friendly, but overall they haven't stolen my heart.

  • David H.

Probably the best donuts in Boston yet. Their donuts aren't super heavy and cakey but light and fluffy like actual donuts should be. For all those complaining that the donuts are "overpriced" when places like Union Square charge roughly the same - go to Dunkin Donuts. There's one a few blocks down. Never have had any problems when coming in here to grab a donut before work and the donuts always are fresh and consistent. They also have soft serve now and having been making pretty b o m b donut sundaes with them. Heads up all you kitschy Instagram-obsessed folks: no cones. No seats inside due to them not having a license for indoor seating (according to their website) and they do their baking onsite. They have a few benches outside their storefront but lack of seating is really not something to gripe about; it's a donut shop not a cafeteria. Definitely try the early bird or the maple peanut butter and grab a coffee there too, their coldbrew ain't half bad.

This is a no fuss shop with doughnuts and coffee, so don't expect a vast menu of options. We tried the blueberry lavender and dark chocolate pomegranate doughnuts. For someone who typically scrapes off the icing of cupcakes and other baked goods, I enjoyed the frosting/glaze. The frosting tasted just as their names would suggest and weren't overly sweet. I thought the actual batter of the doughnut was rather dense and chewy which is heightened when the donuts are consumed cold or at room temp. There's no doubt that if you could eat these donuts warm and fleshly glazed that they would be delectably sinful, but sadly, I don't think many people get a fresh warm batch to consume. This is a great place to try out if you are wandering around the southend and need a sweet pick-me-up.

So I love donuts, in particular union square donuts so I had to come here to compare. The store is unbelievably cute. The menu is simple, either look up at the board for list of available donut flavors or on the side for the donuts with little name tags. Tried the BlackBerry lavender, maple peanut, peach jam Bismarck, and a stack of donut holes. After paying we decided to swap one of the extra BlackBerry lavender ones for a salted toffee amd the cashier just gave it to us for free which was a nice surprise considering these are $3 a pop. Went outside to enjoy these bad boys and although not as good as union square donuts, I still think it's a worthy competitor. The flavors here are unique and well done, my only complaint is that without the icing the dough itself is kind of boring. A union square donut I could eat with or without icing it's that good. But all in all it was a great breakfast in a beautiful part of south end :)

  • Mel C.

YES! Let the donut craze continue. Blackbird is on par with Union Square donuts. The location is kind of off but close enough to Copley Square that makes it a good pick up for your coworkers.

Best doughnuts in the South End! Convenient to Back Bay & Bay Village. Very unique flavors & ingredients! Small space, so line up early. Limited menu & space. Here's to hoping the expand into a full service cafe! Kudos on a job well done!!

The only donut that really matters to me is the chocolate honey-dipped, chocolate glazed, what ever you want to call them. When i was a kid in Maryland, there was a Dunkies nestled into what is now a deadmall, and on those special-treat occasions where we got donuts, those were always my favorite, because they were my dad's favorite. And my mom's. And because they're the best, dang it. Even Dunkin's hasn't screwed them up in the intervening thirty years, although they're a lot smaller and of variable quality. Locally, the gold standard for me is Linda's in Belmont. Chocolatey, crispy with friedness and crispy with glaze, soft in the middle, warm if you're lucky. Huge and filling. Blackbird's is nearly as good. Smaller, but reasonably priced; an excellent combination of crunchysoft (that's a word now), and dark and cocoa-y in the middle. Outstanding enough that i may not bother ordering other flavors next time. Their vanilla glaze was good. It was undercooked, but it's possible that was why i liked it so much. We didn't have so much enthusiasm for the coffee flavored one or the chocolate-pomegranate (needed more of the former) flavored one, but it's not like i'd pass either of them up in the office kitchen either. Good coffee, too. It's going to be a great trip by bike in nicer weather.

Love the donuts! Cute little shop with NO seating. So get your donuts and get out! Really awesome flavor options. Good location. Prefer blackbird over union square donuts. Cheddar jalapeño is actually an awesome flavor... If you want something savory. Salted toffee is the best sweet donut though, hands down!

I have a doughnut once a year, but thanks to Blackbird that's about to change! Delicious, palate exploding, soft, fresh doughnuts!! The doughnuts are huge, and the creative flavors are delicious! Make sure you buy doughnuts to bring home, trust me!! First time there I tried the lemon coconut, blackberry lavender, chocolate old fashioned and the vanilla glaze! They were all really good! My only issue with this magical place, is that they only have drip coffee! No espresso, cortado, nothing!! Such amazing doughnuts should be paired with simple, delicious coffee!!

Dropped by at 7:15am on a Saturday (beware their days and hours before heading there) for 3 doughnuts for $9.63 and was not blown away by the blackberry lavender, unimpressed with the chocolate, and barely made it through the birthday cake.

The donuts are just fine but the soft serve is amazing !!!

Incredible addition to the neighborhood, run by awesome people. One of my favorite things to do is get half a dozen with a friend so we can try as many of the really great, innovative flavors as possible - and they never disappoint. Some of my favorites are s'mores, wildberry bismarck, salted toffee, vanilla glaze, chocolate cake and birthday cake (my favorite) - too many to name so just to name a few. They're just so good. And now they're open 7 days week, which is awesome. So good, so glad Blackbird Doughnuts is here.

These doughnuts were really tasty, the coffee was great, the store was conveniently located, and the service was really helpful. The flavor list changes weekly and seems to normally be a good mix of "normal" flavors (chocolate, vanilla, etc.) and ones that are more adventurous. Sadly, by the time we got to the store (around 11:00 Sunday morning), most of the more creative flavors were already gone. The chocolate old fashioned doughnut was AMAZING, and I also liked the chocolate ganache and the vanilla glazed. The smores one was definitely the cutest, but it was just the same as the chocolate ganache one with some marshmallow fluff/graham cracker crumbs spread on top. We also got the salted toffee, which was a little sweet for my taste but which my husband (who is more of a toffee person anyway) loved. I liked the coffee; we just got the regular drip, and it hit the spot. Downsides: The doughnuts are really doughy; they don't travel/keep very well because of it, and I think these would be even more fantastic fresh out of the oven. Sadly, there isn't really anywhere to sit and enjoy your breakfast in the store, so taking the doughnuts to go is really your only option. I'm also not a fan of the store's hours/policy of staying open until they run out of doughnuts. We headed out fairly early and were disappointed that we had already missed out on so many of the cool flavors! Lots of reviews are comparing Blackbird to Union Square, and if I had to choose, I would hands-down say Union Square. Blackbird's main upside is its location, and it definitely hits the spot if you want a tasty weekend breakfast without leaving the city limits. But they run out of flavors so quickly, and the ones that I tried were tasty but didn't wow me the way Union Square's did. I'd probably go back if I had a doughnut craving, but I won't be making this a regular spot.

The Lemon Coconut is excellent, with the topping covering nearly the entire donut (I hate it when the frosting is just on the top). Solid choice, but on the pricey side.

Heard great things about the doughnuts here and wow did these little sweets more than exceed my expectation! Out of the three of us girls, we tried the blackberry lavender, salted toffee, and lemon coconut. The doughnuts were fresh, moist, and springy. The glazes and frosting finger-licking sticky and generous. My favorite was the blackberry lavender doughnut. I've taken a particular liking to lavender desserts and the sweet, floral flavor of lavender was pleasingly evident in the pink doughnut glaze. In addition to doughnuts, they also serve coffee and a variety of teas--none of which we partook during that visit however. Seating: The shop is mostly a bakery with a counter for customers to order. There are no tables near the bakery outside so we ended up walking back to the Commons to devour our sweets. Price: The doughnuts are around $3 a piece (a small price to pay for incredibly fresh, raised doughnuts). I will definitely be back! Give this place a shot if you ever find yourself in the South End!

Anyone who thinks Union Square Donuts is better than this place is crazy. While I do love me some Union Square Doughnuts... I do not think there is any question whatsoever that this place wins for location (Boston, not Somerville), cost (cheaper and better doughnuts) and taste/creativity given the fact that they clearly experiment more adventurously here and they have a TON more options. Also... The donuts here are not too big, not too small... They're just right! I love the location, decor, service... And most importantly... THE DOUGHNUTS! They have a ton of awesome flavor options. Today I tried the lemon coconut, salted toffee, pepperoni pizza, and s'mores and couldn't decide which one I liked the best! I could taste all the flavors in each one. I don't have a sweet tooth and this place made me want to go back tomorrow to try the rest of their options. I definitely recommend paying a visit to this place!

Sweet mercy. I recently heard about this place and discovered it's only 10 minutes walk from where I work I got pretty excited. Then February happened and even a 10 minute walk became a daunting prospect. But today was the day! I headed over and grabbed 4 donuts. Two for me and two for my wife. I got the chocolate ganache and the lemon coconut and I got her the S'more and the french roast. I ate mine on the walk back. I'd intended only to have a bite of the ganache, but that sort of self control wasn't in the cards. In fact, I almost contrived a story about a patch of black ice and an unfortunate spill to explain the disappearance of the other two. But that wouldn't have played. The donuts themselves are spectacular. Not just sub-par baked goods with distracting toppings. Compared to Dunkin (just for reference!) the yeast raised donuts have a great deal more substance and flavor, but aren't too heavy or chewy. It's still a very light bite. The toppings were also expertly applied. I was able to eat them on foot without making a mess, but still felt that I'd gotten an experience. On the packaging- I could care less. As long as they're protected they can come in a shoe box. They're too delicious to trifle over such matters.

Good but not great. Super friendly staff in a lovely new storefront in the South End. We had vanilla, chocolate pomegranate (couldn't really taste the pomegranate part but man the chocolate cake donut was delicious), pineapple habanero (my fiancée's favorite), and wild berry. All were tasty but just lacking that little extra oomph to get the fifth star. Also, please be aware of the one-star reviews below... A user named Tammy C obviously doesn't like donuts, so don't trust her opinion (her profile gives 1-star reviews to a half dozen donut places). Try it yourself and let us all know here! Will definitely come back to try some other flavors. Plenty of donuts and no line at 8:00am on a very cold Sunday.

I've had better. At $3 a piece, I would expect better presentation. I bought 2 to try them. One for me and one to take home to my wife. They have so much icing and stuff on them that most came off in the paper the get wrapped in. Use an individual box like DD uses for their croissant donut. The one thing I found most offensive was their high-tech POS system. The monitor swings around and the full-screen inquires if you want to leave a gratuity. Sorry, this is a donut joint. Don't put it in plain view how much tip, if any, I plan to leave. $10 for 2 donuts and 1 coffee is crazy. Not even a place to sit down and eat.

The best doughnut in town by a mile. And I don't usually love doughnuts. Never too sweet, interesting combinations, and THE best cult classics. My friend and I wake up early before work every Thursday to treat ourselves.

  • Sarah R.

Blackbird we want to support you, be good customers and buy expensive doughnuts. But we tried Glazed and Blackberry Jelly, the dough was dense and goopy, I never thought I would not like a doughnut. The shop is nice. The staff who rung me up was nice, but manager was like gargamel looking over shoulder. Beautiful view into amazing kitchen, staff seemed frantic... I hope you can work things out Blackbird, we haven't tried cake doughnut yet, or the coffee. One more chance. (FYI Pastry chef at Cinquecento makes world's best donut.)

  • Anthony N.

Three donuts are delicious. I see why they draw a comparison to union square; they have the same fluffy texture. However, they do not share the same huge size. Donuts run $3 each. Chocolate ganache - delicious dark chocolate on top of fluffy donut. Chocolate old fashioned - imagine crispy creme glazed donut with a dark devil's foodcake on the inside. Apple Bismark - a Chinese buffet donut with cinnamon filled with McDonald's Apple pie filling. I mean all of those words as the highest praise. Better warm. Pepperoni pizza - surprisingly my favorite. I feel you must warm this up but it is well worth it. The sauce and the donut as dough is perfect. If you only get one donut this should be it.

I've been waiting another hip, adventurous, tastefully-decorated doughnut shop to open, and lo and behold here comes Blackbird Doughnuts. I'm a sucker for a good raised doughnut. I try to track them down whenever I'm traveling, so I've had some gems in various locales around the country, including Doughnut Plant in NYC and Voodoo Donuts in Portland, OR, and more local specialties like Allie's Donuts in RI and of course Kane's in Saugus and Union Square Donuts in Somerville. Blackbird has clearly defined themselves as less the traditional coffee and donut shop and more the donut-shop-for-foodies shop. I'm ok with that. While they only have a relatively small offering of flavors, they do them right. We ended up trying all of the ones they had available this morning except the sesame sriracha (the kiddos were with us): salted toffee, vanilla glazed, chocolate cake, honey pistachio, blackberry lavender, and berry bismarck. Unfortunately there is no seating available in the shop (which is the only reason why I knocked a star off), so we had to find another location in which to enjoy them, which led us to the cafe of the new Whole Foods Ink Block. Don't judge - we were headed there to do our grocery shopping anyway. The donuts were really good. Cake donuts aren't really my thing, but the glazed chocolate cake donut was pretty impressive. The jam inside of the berry bismarck was also surprisingly good. It wasn't overly sweet or goopy, but just serious nice jam that let the flavor of the fruit shine. My favorite though? The blackberry lavender. The icing was just *so* flavorful - like, how'd they do that? Magic maybe.

3 Sundays in a row. Cant stay away from this place!!! yummy fluffy donuts....not your overly sweetened or oily onces. PERFECTION. now let me find the gym next.

Great flavors--we had blackberry lavender and honey pistachio lemon--both super delicious. Glad the local gourmet donut market is getting a little more competitive! Our only gripe is there's no place to sit :'(

I was very excited to hear of a gourmet donut shop in Boston, but disappointed when I tasted these. I have high standards--I regularly eat at Doughnut Plant in New York, the world's best, and a completely different level of donut. I think Boston is a terrible city for donuts. Dunkin Donuts is really a coffee shop with mediocre (but cheap) donuts. I wouldn't bother with anyplace except Ohlin's Bakery in Belmont (best), Linda's Donuts in Belmont (delicious) and Union Square Donuts. I'd place Blackbird on par with Union Square--good and creative but not really gourmet and not worth $3 a pop. Service was prompt and friendly.

Awful. Don't bother. Tasteless donuts that made me feel sick. Felt I was cutting into a pad of butter but shockingly no flavor and not a good kind of sweet. Do yourself a favor and head to union sq donuts or better yet holy donut in Maine. Pass!!!

If they didn't have a little chalk sign out in front I wouldn't have noticed this place as I walked by today. My first thoughts where good. I liked the decor. Good attention to detail and the interesting donut flavors were intriguing--pepperoni pizza and maple miso to name two. I decided I'd go with something that I could effectively judge the quality of the donut instead of getting bogged down in whether it was the exotic donut flavor that I liked/disliked, so with that I went with a chocolate glazed. My first thought as she rang me up was... wow $3.25 for a single donut. I thought well, that's pricey but you know if it's a high quality donut I don't mind. I handed them the money and I got my chocolate donut in hand. Second impression... small. Compared with a Verner's donut this was half the size with glaze only on the top--kinda like how a cinnamon roll is glazed. I bit into it... soft, fresh, strong oil flavor. A few more bites... mild chocolate flavor overpowered by the taste of vegetable oil. The worst donut I've had in recent memories.

High expectations for this little neighborhood doughnut shop. A-OK is right. The shop is really small with no seating - so don't expect to eat your doughnuts there. There are plenty of metered spots in front to park your car when you stop in. We went on a Sunday around 10 AM, and there was no line. We got four doughnuts - chocolate cake, apple bismarck, vanilla glaze, and french roast - and coffee. The doughnuts were a little too dough-y/chewy for my liking, but the flavors were good. The coffee was, well, coffee, with a nice selection of creamers, including soy. I'm sure we'll be back to try more!

The perfect addition to the South End! I stopped off and grabbed a vanilla glazed and three mini cinnamon sugar donuts and they were gone before I made it halfway down the street. No regrets. I'm excited to see what new items appear in the future!

I've been waiting and waiting to find the time to get over to Blackbird Doughnuts and they lived up to every expectation I had. The fact that you can walk into a place where they are hand making doughnuts and frosting them makes puts all your senses into over drive. The smell is inebriating, the décor is beautiful, and within 30 seconds your drooling and considering ordering every doughnut they have on the menu. I tried the Dark Chocolate Pomegranate, Lemon Coconut, Wild Berry Bismarck, Glazed Old Fashioned, and the Chocolate Cake. HOLY COW! These are unlike any doughnut I've ever had. Packed with flavor and melt in your mouth goodness. I'll be going back every week to try the new flavors they come out with.

Small shop with great assortment of flavors. The lines can get long on the weekends. I wish they offered a discount for buying multiples, because at $3/each it's too expensive for the office or large gatherings.

Truly incredible and beyond delicious. They are always coming out with new donuts too which is fun! Definitely bad for a diet but great for everything else. I love blackbird!!!!

A gourmet donut shop with promise. I've been a big fan of Union Square Donuts in Somerville, and I'd visit them more often if they weren't so far away from where I live. So when I heard that Blackbird opened in the South End, which is closer, I was one happy camper. The donuts are generously sized and soft in texture. The raspberry dark chocolate is an instant favorite, and the French roast is a must for coffee lovers. Both are alive with flavor. Unfortunately, there's no seating at this location, so if you're looking to relax with a tablet or a few friends, you're out of luck. Now here's one small criticism: they need to stop packaging their beautiful donuts in a pizza box. It cheapens the presentation and it's not a good look when you're snapping a pic for Instagram. Hopefully, they'll invest in better boxes in the future. All in all, these guys have a lot of promise and have the potential to be a gem in the South End. If they keep rotating their menu with interesting flavors and maintain the quality, Blackbird should be around for a while.

    (4)
  • Sal W.

Way overrated. This are essentially Dunkin Donuts with a fancier frosting on top. For $3 each, I can't say I would ever go here again. No seating inside. Fancy frosting selection, but the donut part just wasn't anything to write home about.

  • Judy K.

Its nice to have a bakery in the area and these donuts are definitely superior to Dunkin's. But for three bucks a pop - they should be! There were about 1/2 dozen flavors, average sized, and coffee available. But unfortunately no seating at all. A few stools near the window would have been great - we would have bought coffee to go with our donuts and settled in for a little while to enjoy. But as is we just left with bag in hand to find coffee elsewhere. I had the lemon pistachio and my friend had the chocolate glazed. The lemon had a strong burst of lemon flavor when I bit into the sticky treat. The taste of chocolate donut I had was good - not too sweet with a soft crumbly texture.

Loved the texture of these donuts - they're quite light, but held up well beneath the icing. I was lucky enough to go on a morning when there was no line, but I wish there had been more of a selection of non-fruity/berry donuts. Don't get me wrong, they were delicious (especially the blackberry lavender!!), but some more variety would have been nice. I won't be running back, but will certainly check it out again the future when it looks like they have more new flavors.

I believed the hype so you don't have to. I got the dark chocolate raspberry and an old-fashioned chocolate glazed. The former was pretty insignificant and bland, but the chocolate glazed was extraordinarily disgusting. It was basically made of fat, almost falling apart from a lack of ingredients other than fat. I couldn't force myself to eat more than half. My mom, who is a cake/doughnut/lard fanatic tried it and couldn't believe she'd ever be so disgusted by a doughnut. I can't believe local media took the bait on hyping these subpar overpriced doughnuts. Even the shop isn't particularly nice. You can get a better doughnut at pretty much any supermarket bakery. Don't waste your time or money.

Fantastic donuts! Tried coconut lemon, Boston cream, raspberry dark chocolate, and salted caramel with two coffees...15$. Only issue, no where to sit and enjoy.

Tried the shop for donuts this morning. Had the vanilla glazed - raspberry/rhubarb filled - Boston creme - and jalapeño whatever. All were so- so. Not bad - not exceptional in any way. I've tried donuts all over the planet. My favorite - the sugared jelly donut ( which is no longer available since they changed bakers ) was at Tesco in Inverness, Scotland , UK. It did provide a lovely morning walk - also shooting " Ghost Busters " outside the hotel. Courtside Marriott on Tremont St.

about time the South End got it's own donut shop so props to the folks at Gallows for thinking this one up. set-up and flavor whimsy reminds of Dough in NY but it'll take just a bite of a cake donut to know this is legit.

Was so excited to get an artisan donut shop in my neighborhood! This was a big disappointment however. The specialty flavors are fine, it's the base donut that's lacking in taste and off in texture. Sadly not worth the calories. Union Square Donuts is much better.

Just discovered that this place had opened after reading the Improper. Stopped in on our way out of the city on a weekday afternoon and was glad to see they still had a wide variety available. We picked up a Toffee, Maple Peanut butter and a Triple chocolate. My favorite was the chocolate. It was the best dessert I had all week. It will not disappoint any chocoholic out there. I was less impressed with the Maple Peanut butter but the toffee was great and impressed my husband who doesn't usually care for sweets. We'll return next time we're in the area.

After months of anticipation, my wife and I tried Blackbird's donuts this morning. We ordered the salted toffee, old fashioned chocolate, cinnamon sugar stack, apple bismarck, and the French toast. Five donuts, two coffees, and $20 later, I can say that I'm underwhelmed. The donuts are fluffy but greasy. I like their variety of flavors, but the dough itself is bland. Probably won't be going back unless we happen to be in the neighborhood, which we most likely won't be. Bummer.

Donuts are incredibly delicious. Coffee was fantastic! The line moves fast. Unfortunately there is no place to sit inside. But the donuts are so fresh, they will taste just as good at home. I hear donuts are less calories than a bagel?!

Sigh. I swear I wanted to love this place. Heck, I would have been happy to have liked this place, but I didn't. I'll start by saying that the person working the counter was very friendly, so there's that (otherwise it would have been a one-star review) and the coffee wasn't bad, but it's not called Blackbird Friendly Staff and OK Coffee, it's called Blackbird Doughnuts and, well, that's where it fell down. Tried four different flavors of the yeast donuts and, without fail, they were all too sweet and the dough was literally raw in the center. (Note, when I say "literally," I mean "literally" not "figuratively.") I took one bite of each doughnut and that was that. I will admit that I probably don't like doughnuts as sweet as some people do, but I don't know anyone who likes a raw-in-the-center doughnut. It's possible that it was an off day, but, wow, it's hard to want to come back.

Grabbed a toffee donut to go. OH MY GOD. I want to crawl in this donut and live in it. I warmed it in the microwave for 10 seconds and it was the best donut I've ever eaten. It's got sea salt, so it tastes like a pretzel-gooey-donut hybrid. It's got a good amount of dough to it and just the right amount of sugar to be sweet but not overly sweet. Can't wait to be back for more!

Really love the lemon coconut, chocolate cake, and vanilla glazed! Some of the more creative flavors haven't really done it for me, and I've wanted to like them. I think I'm just a bit simple in my donut taste. I'd love to see a glazed bismark from them!

Such an amazing donut. The customer service is so excellent. They are all so nice and friendly. The big kicker is you gotta get here in the morning or they are out of a lot of stuff. Although I think now that they are getting more popular they are making more donuts so they don't run out as early in the day. It's a very moist luxurious donut. And I just love that. The coffee is also very good. It would be nice if they had somewhere to sit. But they are very new and real estate is expensive. So I get why they don't. I can definitly see this becoming a huge thing.

I was so pumped to go to Blackbird Doughnuts! I absolutely loved the Gallows and it's the same group, so I knew it would be good. Blackbird is definitely the best doughnut shop in the South End/Back Bay Area. The doughnuts were light and scrumptious (we got the vanilla glaze and blackberry). But after having Union Square Donuts, it's tough doughnut competition! Sidenote: the coffee is really good and the chandelier is lovely too. Definitely worth stopping by.

  • Ben B.

Blackbird is pretty good. Something left me a little disappointed though. I think the donuts are overpriced. I'm not opposed to spending $3 per donut; Union Sq does a great donut at that price. I think the decor in Blackbird is perfect and I like the idea of a small, pickup only shop. The salted toffee donut was my favorite. The chocolate ganasher was also good but the rest of the flavors we tried were uninspiring. I didn't get to try the cake donuts. I may stop in again to get one.

LOVE this place. Really good coffee and great donuts. They are so fresh, yummy, and very creative. I highly recommend the birthday cake doughnut, there's nothing like it.. They are a little pricey at $3 a pop but so worth it. Such a nice treat. Very friendly staff as well.

TLDR; go to Verna's for a way better old fashioned donut and go to Union Square if you want a better fancy donut. Blackbird underserves on both flavor, size and true-doughnut-ness. Honestly disappointed. Tried the lemon cream bismarck and the chocolate old fashioned. First off, for $3, they were awfully small, and I think Union Square Donuts definitely has a better dollar value. The lemon bismarck's filling was good, but it was really thin and runny, which kind of removed some appeal of the doughnut, and made it difficult to eat. Like many reviewers have commented, the doughnut seemed only partially baked inside, and was rather greasy feeling on the outside. When this happens, it's because the frying oil isn't hot enough, and as a result, the dough absorbs extra oil. Yuck. The chocolate old fashioned was good, but again, really small. It almost tasted like an oreo cake ball. What I really found disappointing about it though was that there was only a thin layer of glaze on top -- real old fashioned donut are dunked 100% in glaze. Don't think I'll be back to blow another $3 on a small, unsatisfactory donut. You'll find me at Verna's or Donuts with a Difference.

Donuts were great, but bring your checkbook!! $36 for a dozen donuts is a lil steep, in my opinion, but what the hell do I know?!? I'm a simple man. I prefer Kane's Donuts in Saugus. More of a selection of cake style donuts, which I prefer, and no uppity hipster dufusness.

I am absolutely obsessed with blackbird! Their donuts are amazing. It is not an ideal location and it is a struggle to find parking. But once you get there it is well worth it. Chocolate cake and vanilla glaze seem to be staples which I love. I also tried the birthday cake and cinnamon sugar both delicious. These donuts are so different from a Dunkin donuts or Starbucks. For a donut lover this place a must!

Believe it or not when I walked in "Black Bird" by The Beatles was playing :) the small charming environment is very welcoming and the staff is very friendly. The donuts are very original and creative, with flavors such as dark chocolate pomegranate, lemon coconut, house jam-filled, ect. It's $3 a donut and pretty much worth it! Great coffee as well. No cafe seating would be the only downside-but hey it's a donut so what could be better?

Coconut donut and donut holes are pretty doughy and chewy. Chocolate donut was good. but nothing better than dunkin donuts version at 1/3 the cost

So I'm not much if a doughnut or cupcake kind of person but I've been to Blackbird thrice with my kids and I can say that thus far every doughnut I've tried was a success but what makes it special for a coffee snob the the cup of plain black with the pineapple habanero just melted in my mouth! And for my girls the mini sugar coated ones and chocolate doughnuts magically disappeared into them. Make sure you've booked yourself for some cardio classes ahead of time because this will become a habit.

It's just a doughnut. Nothing more and maybe less. My wife and I bought a half dozen to take a sample of all, and they pretty much all taste the same. Sugary and bland. I took a bite of each, which equates to about one doughnut total and now I feel nauseous. It is easy to think they are something completely special to the doughnut world, w their nice branding and sleek shop. At $3 a doughnut, it is not worth the cost and the calorie count. To note, the staff was very friendly and courteous.

DELICIOUS and FRESH!!!! The honey lemon pistachio was amazing, perfect balance of the acidity of the lemon with the earthiness of the pistachio and the sweetness of honey. All the yeast/raised doughnuts were light and airy, the Chocolate cake was moist. Morning staff, friendly and did their job. They smiled, said good morning, gave me my doughnuts and charged my visa. What else are they supposed to do? I don't understand some people who complain what the staff didn't hug them when they walked in. Thankful that Blackbird has joined the list of new quality eateries that are making the South End a great place to live.

I seriously would have walked right by (and that's exactly what I should have done) were it not for the little sign outside. Instead, I was tricked by the cute decor and the prettiness of the donuts here. I'd consider myself a donut person...light , fluffy yeast donuts are my favorite, though I do indulge in the occasional cake donut. The donut flavors certainly sounded great, but the donuts themselves had none of the qualities I desired: they were thick, heavy, and quite chewy--definitely not what I expected. Even less expected, were the multiple pockets of raw dough that I found within both of the donuts I got. I hate giving bad reviews but giving this place a second chance would only be worth it for a pretty instagram picture (if even) because even though the donuts here are beautiful, they're overpriced and quite disappointing. However, this is just my experience. My friend who came here with me and ordered the same Red Eye and Dark Chocolate Pomegranate donuts as I did thought they were amazing.

toppings were good, but the doughnut batter itself wasnt what i expected. at $3 a doughnut, $36 for a dozen is quite pricey. oh yes, and they give you the doughnuts in a pizza takeout box thats folded inside out which i thought was really really weird.........

Sorry I made the special trip there. It was just terrible. Being a donut lover I thought I have to give this new place a try wish I didn't!! Service was ok but the donut was not Blackberry Lavender was repeating for hours. I won't be back.

  • Gigi B.

I never thought donughts could be so revolting. Doughnuts looked sloppy, seemed undercooked, and the flavors are inspired but sadly misdirected. The lavender blackberry tasted medicinal and overly tart atop what can only be likened to undercooked pizza dough. The cashiers were bright and friendly and genuinely excited about the doughnuts. The owner stood behind them fully engaged in her phone, did not smile, did not greet anyone, and did not help. The coffee is delicious, but overpriced, and for a place that serves doughnuts at 3 bucks a pop, I am happy to take my business elsewhere. I hope that Boston does not continue in it's trend of overcharging locals for fad flavors and chic snobbery. Utterly disappointing, and disgusting - not only due to the stomach ache I got after eating one of the doughnuts, but also for the total lack of authentic charm and service. Blackbird Doughnuts can only be someone's dream child gone wrong - horribly wrong.

I tried this place for the first time today. I tried the Wildberry which was out of this world. Super Fresh and filled with a generous & very tasty portion of Berry Compote. I am a huge Chocolate fan so decided to try the Solid Chocolate Cake. I was very disappointed with this one. It just did not taste right. It had a very odd taste to it, so much in fact that I did not eat it. I will go back though to get another Wildberry & also to try the Coconut Lemon & the Old Fashion Cinnamon. I hope that they add a Fresh Lemon Filled to their Line Up as they have done such a s nice job with the Willdberry filled At 3 bucks a doughnut they are not cheap & the Chocolate one was not worth the 3 bucks at all.

Disappointing. I went here last week to pickup doughnuts for a morning work meeting, I live and work in the South End and had been looking forward to trying the new local gourmet doughnut shop. The location is a bit strange and there isn't any space to sit once you get in there. The staff was friendly enough but didn't seemed confused when I asked what they recommended. I ordered an assortment of 15 doughnuts and the bill was $50. Then when processing my debit card the machine asked me to tip 20%. I don't mind paying for quality but the doughnuts were doughy, chewy and not very flavorful, my coworkers were not too impressed. I went back this morning to give their coffee a chance but they were closed. Only open Thurs-Sunday. Sorry blackbird, I want to support local small business but I'm afraid I won't be returning.

The donuts (the ones that were left by noon on a Saturday which were only birthday cake and Irish creme) were rich and thick and cakey. I enjoyed them, but there's zero room to sit and enjoy them and no where around the block to do so either when it's winter. Disappointed by the selection after taking a bus a half hour to get there and then also disappointed by the lack of anywhere to stay and enjoy the donut.

Ordered a lemon coconut after reading reviews saying it wasn't very sweet - it was outrageously sweet for me. Went with some friends who made much better flavor decisions- the chocolate glaze and the one stuffed with berries were much better. Drip coffee was good. Disappointing that there isn't any seating as I visited in the dead of winter and had to eat my breakfast in the cold :(

  • Carol S.

My main complaint is the price. $3+ is much too expensive for a doughnut in my opinion. The five different doughnuts we tried were ok; interesting flavors, but we've had much nicer texture at other boutique doughnut shops. If they lowered their price we'd be back simply because we love doughnuts, but at that price, I'd rather waste the calories on an ice cream or something that will take more than 60 seconds to eat.

    (2)
  • Sam B.

Totally worth the trip. Just as good if not better than Union Square Donuts. Batter/dough was fluffy and tasted very fresh. Salted toffee donut was definitely our favorite and the chocolate ganache was a close second. Will definitely be back.

You know what?? Better than I expected! Doughnuts/donuts are the new "it" item (peace out macarons, peace out cronuts), so I understood the excitement when Blackbirds first appeared as one of the first gourmet doughnut shops in downtown Boston. Every girl out there was probably thinking "instagram worthy" before even trying it out. I know I was. My initial reaction when I walked in was similar to everyone else's: so. tiny. The space is SUPER small, but they made the best out of it with the hanging chandelier and the tiled floors. They added outdoor seating, so at least now you can enjoy your donut... while watching cars drive by, I guess. I got a vanilla glazed donut with a cold brew coffee (again, another "it" item these days). I've accepted that the vanilla glaze is probably the closest thing I'll get to Krispy Kreme in the northeast, but I'm paying much more for it here. (COME TO BOSTON, KRISPY KREME. PLEASE) It's soft and the perfect amount of sweetness. Refer to picture, but definitely a bigger donut than most. Worth the $3? Probably not, but satisfied my krispy kreme craving. The unexpected highlight of this purchase was the cold brew coffee! Freaking delicious. The large and medium are pretty much the same size, so just get the medium with less ice. Overall, I'm willing to come again to try the different flavors at blackbird, but Doughboy's boston creme donuts are still my favorite of all time.

  • Janet H.

Pretty good donuts, but I've been to better donut places... So this place is tiny... like, nowhere to sit tiny. In fact, there's only two benches outside to sit to enjoy your donuts. TWO! And imagine how crumbly and annoying it gets to nosh on donuts in hand with no table... I'm half-half impressed with the flavors offered as well. I'm super bummed that I didn't see any lavender or lemon flavors that all the Yelpers have mentioned. I got the simple Vanilla glaze, which was good (and simple). It didn't taste oily and it was pleasant. I also got the "early bird" which had greek yogurt + home made granola on it. Not bad either. Overall, okay... just wished they had milder flavors, rather than super sweet ones such as Birthday Cake, triple chocolate, etc.

Co-Worker brought us in Donuts from Blackbird a few weeks ago & OMG they are the best things ever... Just like Kanes (for those from the North Shore) Tons of variety, and cool options. Will def plan to go & check out more things! Love that they come in a pizza box!

Cute little shop, with an amazing variety of donuts! The cashier was extremely friendly and polite! I had the Salted Toffee, which was incredible! I never had such large and fluffy donuts! The only down side was that there was no seating, but that won't stop me from coming back! Excellent! xoxo

Blackbird Doughnuts was such a disappoint to me. I think I got too excited for it because I kind of expected it to be like Union Square donuts. I went there today and there were a lot of street parking surprisingly. The shop is REALLY small, but it's really cute. I really like the decor and everything. I ordered one of every doughnut they had - vanilla glaze, raspberry dark chocolate, salted toffee, triple chocolate cake, boston cream, birthday cake, chocolate ganache, lemon coconut, blackberry lavender, pepperoni pizza, cinnamon sugar, and wild berry. Vanilla Glaze - You can never go wrong with a classic. I highly recommend this if you're not willing to try other flavors. Raspberry Dark Chocolate - This doughnut is so delightful! The frosting tastes more like a jam and actually has small bits of raspberry in it which adds to the natural flavor of raspberries. Yummy! I will definitely be getting this doughnut again! Salted Toffee - I'm not a fan of toffee so this wasn't my favorite naturally. Triple Chocolate Cake - This doughnut is pretty dense compared to other doughnuts. It's like a hybrid between a doughnut and a brownie. Regardless, it is SO CHOCOLATELY GOOD! I would honestly love a dozen of these doughnuts than a dozen roses or a box of chocolates. This is definitely recommended for chocolate lovers!!!!!! Boston Cream - Can you say DROOOOOOOOL?! The doughnut just melts in your mouth with every bite you take. The filling is silky smooth and is not too sweet, and the chocolate ganache is absolute perfection. Wow I am definitely coming back for this. Birthday cake - I found this donut to be bland as well. I think they could definitely use more frosting and sprinkles on this doughnut. Chocolate Ganache - This is definitely my favorite one. The chocolate ganache is absolutely delicious (not too sweet and not too bitter). They drizzle A LOT of ganache on it which is perfect. Lemon Coconut - I am not a fan of coconut, but this doughnut might actually convert me into a crazy coconut lady because it is THAT good. It is the perfect balance of lemon and coconut. So if you are not a fan of coconut, please consider trying this. It is perfection. For those coconut lovers out there - this is your dream doughnut. Blackberry Lavender - This doughnut is so aromatic!!!! I absolutely enjoyed eating this. I am a sucker for lavender flavored sweets/desserts. I highly recommend this if you love lavender :) I devoured this doughnut in less than a minute. Not to mention, the color of the doughnut is beautiful. It literally screams "eat me". Pepperoni Pizza - If you're not a fan of sweets (like my friend who came with me), you should definitely try it. It's not the best pepperoni "pizza", but it is really good! It's also a nice break for your taste buds after devouring two sugar doughnuts. Cinnamon Sugar - I'm not sure if it's my particular doughnut, but I find this to be really bland. I didn't really taste the cinnamon. It was just........ a bite of sugar.....lots of sugar. Wild Berry - Truth be told, I was really excited to try this donut but it tastes like a regular frosted doughnut. The wild berry flavor is really subtle. Overall, I think I only liked 1/3 of the doughnuts as most of them were bland. Although they were really good doughnuts, I hardly think that I will be back because Union Sq. Donuts stole my heart in terms of doughnuts. I'm sorry =/

The location is very odd. I'm lucky that my church is walking distance from this location; otherwise, I would not make the trek to try these donuts. The shop itself is very small, consisting of a cashier stand with no seating available. For a pickup-and-go concept, there is nothing surrounding this shop to encourage one to stay in the area unless you have brunch/dinner plans in the South end. I tried the French Roast donut (coffee flavored) paired with a short drip coffee. The donut itself was very soft and chewy, but the flavor of coffee did not stick to the donut at all. It tasted like a chewy glazed donut, which was not impressive for the price. My drip coffee overpowered any sort of taste that my donut had. For $2, this coffee is very strong and highly caffeinated. I think the coffee is a much better deal than the donut. I may want to try some other flavors, because I wasn't impressed by the French Roast.

Blackbird doughnuts is an addiction. They add a new flavor every week and I haven't had one that disappoints. Service is friendly and efficient. Major plus because I'm not the most pleasant in the morning and taking a bite out of my favorite French Roast makes it so much better! S'mores is my second fave then there's the Lemon Bismark, which I haven't seen back on the menu, but I hope it makes a return soon! Their doughnuts are a but larger in size compared to what you might imagine and the texture, their dough is perfection. It's like eating a soft pillow of delicious. It's not greasy and definitely feels less guilty. Always recommending this place. I. Love. It.

  • Jenn S.

Excitement is what I was experiencing waiting for Blackbird to open. I just saw a comment that said they were comparable to Union and that is a slight insult to Union (sorry Blackbird). These poor donuts wanted to be that delicious but the batter was dense, dry, not fresh tasting and the only good parts were the topping... on some of them. If I had to pick one I would say the salted carmel was the one I liked the best. Maybe they are working out a few kinks but I would not be back anytime soon unless there was a new buzz that they have improved.

I wish they could make the smell of this place into a perfume. In the spirit of my solo food double-fisting adventures, I tried the triple chocolate cake and blackberry lavender flavors. The textures and flavors of both are very different but it's a testament to how well they can make both traditional and cake style donuts. Echoing everyone else, the blackberry lavender glaze is intoxicating and a little tangy, goes perfectly with the dough underneath. And the chocolate is just so...indulgent. There's not really anywhere to sit but it's near a park so you can easily drop in and marvel at your plunder in the trees!

    Y. U. M. I love these doughnuts!! I've tried the cinnamon sugar, the old fashioned chocolate glazed, and the b-day cake and all were delicious, though I prefer the chocolate and cinnamon sugar. The staff is super friendly and nice. Really like the people they've hired. I used to live in the neighborhood and I think it would be a scary addiction if I still did. The ambience is TINY. There's no place to sit and have coffee/doughnut and chit chat. I wish there was a place for that, but that's really indicative of the space, not the food, so I'll just cross my fingers and hope they can expand at some point! Or maybe some outdoor tables this summer? Also, I appreciate that they sell out of things, but I agree with the other commenters who feel like the pressure is on--wake up early and get there, or you don't get the selection. I'd like their inventory to last a little longer. Overall, I'm a huge fan!

These doughnuts are big, fluffy, not too sweet and creative. When you bite into it, it springs back up and maintains its awesome fluffy shape. The doughnut itself isn't too sweet, which works really well with the frosting. It's not greasy or plain. It's the perfect little dough ready to be dipped in amazing sugar. I had the lemon coconut which was great. It was tangy, sweet and simply delicious. I feel like everything with coconut is bound to taste good. I also had a bite of the red eye doughnut which has a coffee and espresso flavored frosting. It was pretty good, but I liked the lemon coconut better. I think the frostings are really creative and that's what gives these doughnuts a bump. They change their frosting menu every 2 weeks so you can come in for a different surprise every time! The place is super small though. You can only grab and go. There are no seats, but the store itself is really cute. Make sure you grab a small drip coffee on your way out with your doughnut! It pairs deliciously with the sweet treat. And the coffee isn't like DD's or Starbucks coffee. It's BETTER.

These gourmet doughnuts are some of the best I have had and are on par with the other top gourmet doughnuts I have had in the Boston area (I won't name the competition). I liked the creative box, it was an inside out pizza box, they probably saved a ton using those instead of a custom box. These guys must be smart cookies (or smart doughnuts?) Siracha - Very interesting concept of mixing sweet and spicy. While I'm more of a sweets guy, I would definitely have a bite of this one again. Chocolate Honeydipped - Amazing, dunkin's doesn't hold a candle to them on this one. Crunchy enough on the outside while being soft on the inside. Blueberry Lavender - Delicious and the name describes the flavor. Not overly sweet, just perfect. Vanilla Glazed (aka honeydipped) - Just a perfect execution on the classic Toffee (or was it salted caramel) - Either way it was probably my favorite next to the chocolate honey dipped. Buy it!

I saw this spot on Dining Playbook on NESN recently and was determined to give them a try on my next visit to Boston. I'm happy to say they are awesome. I tried three varieties: vanilla glazed, raspberry dark chocolate and a granulated sugar coated, peach jam filled Bismarck. All of them were excellent. My favorite was the raspberry dark chocolate. I just think raspberry and dark chocolate complement each other very well. All doughnuts are fresh made and are the raised type, which I like much better than the cake type. There's not much to the place. It's basically a counter where you go in to order and take them outside to eat. They also have various coffees and teas available for beverages but you are here for the doughnuts. If you're in Boston, check them out.

Donuts were light, airy, and had interesting flavors. I would really love if the donuts with topping (pistachio, lavender) had it across the entire top and not just on one section. Love that you can look into the kitchen and watch the magic happen. Too bad they're not made to order, cuz trekking to South End in the winter does not happen on weekends at 8am. My donut was a bit cold when I bit into it, but nothing a little time in the oven couldn't fix. There was no line when I got there on the Saturday of their opening week around noon. Please get new boxes of various sizes. I felt a little silly carrying a box for a medium sized pizza to hold just two donuts.

No seating, no standing, not a place to go to the bathroom, but amazing doughnuts! This place can help you get your artisan doughnut fix, or fulfill your every day workhorse doughnut needs. I had the vanilla glaze doughnut. The dough was authentic doughnut, not an imposter. It was soft like a cloud, yet had the needed chew. It wasn't too small and it wasn't too big. The vanilla glaze wasn't plain, but it was flavor the danced in your mouth. The coffee was the perfect compliment.

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed by Blackbird. Despite some inventive offerings (e.g. Banyan and strawberry-rhubarb) the donuts were in a word "Meeh". Both raised and cake versions were undercooked which meant that the frosting and glaze soaked into the dough making them soggy. The triple chocolate cake did not have any flavor and no exterior crunch. If Blackbird addresses the basics I'd try them again but for now I am happy to have District Donuts at home in NOLA

Incredible doughnuts and coffee. Great staff that's also very helpful. Flavors are creative and well thought out. Best doughnuts I've ever had. My favorite was the chocolate old fashioned. The flavor/texture combo can't be beat! Get there early as there might be a line...worth the wait!

If you didn't know of Blackbird, you might pass it on your walk down Tremont Street. Nestled within a strip mall on Tremont Street, it can easily be passed. The only recognizable feature of this donut shop is its pink protruding sign. Walking in, there was a winding rope for the soon to come line. Luckily, I made it with enough time that I didn't have any trouble taking pictures. Blogger problems. The contrast between the white tiles to the black announcement board allowed for the beverage and donut offerings to really stand out. On the menu were eleven donuts, each going for $3. Asking what they had seen as the biggest crowd pleasers they mentioned the raspberry dark chocolate and lemon cream bismark. Having given up chocolate for lent and not a lemon girl myself, I went for a glazed and coffee donut. I got my order in a bag but couldn't help but chuckle at the fact that the donuts were being placed in inverted pizza boxes. Perhaps it is because it's the only place in Boston that has a pizza donut? I guess I will have to go back and ask.

Decided to behave and only got two donuts - the maple peanut butter and the blueberry coconut. Best decision because they were soooooo delicious. Will be back for more soon. Customer service was awesome, the girl working the counter was very friendly and patient with me as I was deciding what to get. Can't wait to try other flavors.

Stopped in here after hearing so many great things about the place. My friend and I decided to get the chocolate donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. Was this the best donut I've ever had? I'm not sure it hit quite that level, but the flavor and richness was definitely there. I'd be curious to try some of their other flavors to really get a good feel, but I was happy with the one I chose. Worth checking out if you're looking for a quick bite in the South End.

I've held off on reviewing Blackbird Doughnuts, because I don't want it to get too popular. I've decided to stop being so selfish. Blackbird is much better than Union Sq. No contest. I live in Porter Square, which is very close to Union Sq. Donuts, and I will STILL hop on the T hilariously early in the morning to head to the South End to have Blackbird Doughnuts instead. When I go to Union Square, I often leave disappointed. Their donuts, especially the flavored ones, are highly inconsistent day-to-day. The only donut that makes me consistently happy is their Sugar Raised (presumably because it has fewer ingredients to screw up?). The rest range from Great to "In what universe is this worth $3.50?!," depending on how good of a day you happen to visit. Their offerings are pretty static too, so you'd think that they'd at least be consistent... NOPE. Blackbird's yeasted donuts are always delightfully fluffy, and their cake donuts are richly dense. Some of their sweeter berry fruit flavors can tilt toward cloying or artificial, but I think that's just my palate. Their specials are pretty much always worth a try! Their coffee is better than Union Sq's (but that's not saying much -- pretty much everyone just goes across the street to Bloc 11 anyway). And now they also sell soft-serve!! All-time Favorites: Vanilla Glazed, Triple Chocolate Cake, INK'd (was a special), Banyan (special).

Donuts here are. To. Die. For. There assortment is on point, the prices are great. The only downfall is how *somewhat* inconvenient it is to get their via commute. I also don't like how early they close like everything else in Boston :( Oh and how quickly they sell out. The blueberry donut was bomb AF. I crave this place so much. So gewd.

Boston's South End is home to some of the city's best food. One of it's most recent additions is Blackbird Doughnuts down on Tremont Street. New England and Boston in particular is home to the infamous, mediocre Dunkin Donut so I was beyond thrilled to learn that there was a new shop making fresh doughnuts in the Town. Blackbird makes gourmet doughnuts with some very fun, very delicious flavor. On my first visit a few weeks into their grand opening, I tried a few of these bad boys: Wild Berry Bismark, Buffalo Frito, Pineapple Habanero, and Dark Chocolate Pomegranate. Amazing flavors. The most unique and my favorite was the Buffalo Frito. With the sweet and savory combination topped with that drizzle of Frank's hot sauce, my taste buds died and went to heaven. The doughnut itself is a dense yeast doughnut that is heavier than most I've had. These guys are jacked with dough. Similar to that guy at the gym that keeps hogging the weight bench, think solid, packing some real muscle. The shop is open Thursdays-Sundays 7am to 3pm. It's a small space with standing room only so be prepared to congregate in the corner or take them outside to enjoy. Another great option is walking down the street to the Starbucks or the park a few blocks down for some more seating. What keeps me coming back are the crazy good flavors and thick glazed coating on each of these guys. The salted toffee is however by far my favorite. Salt and sweet and perfectly balanced. This salted toffee is the Blackbird poster child and it's impossible to leave without devouring one. They will usually have a few daily specials depending on the season so there is always something new to try. Last Sunday I stopped by with a few friends and made out with a pepperoni pizza, s'mores, and of course a salted toffee. As always the salted toffee was phenomenal, the pepperoni pizza was a savory treat, and the s'mores with fluff and chocolate ganache did not disappoint. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in the South End, Blackbird is a must!

I heard so much hype about this place that I just had to try it. I get that this place is innovative in their donut flavors, but after eating their donuts - I don't get the hype. They're not necessarily bad, but nothing special. Sure, the donuts look great and sound awesome in the pictures. But they are nothing to write home about. I ordered the chocolate old-fashioned donut and did not like it at all. I tried the pepperoni pizza donut, which was surprisingly one of my favorite ones I tried there. Would I go here again? Maybe, if I'm in the area. But I wouldn't go out of my way and make the walk from Arlington Station in sub-zero freezing temperatures after a major snow storm (which is what I did the first time).

Fluffy, decadent doughnuts in a mix of traditional favorites and fun new flavors! This was our first experience and we are already regretting not bringing home a bigger box. The line was fast moving and all the staff were cheery and cleary excited about their kickass doughnuts. We decided to go with four flavors to share; the blackberry lavender (our favorite from the pack!), coconut lemon, vanilla glazed and salted toffee. Wish we could 4.5 star, our love (I'm sure) will only grow the more we taste. We are excited to brag to our buds about this new find!

Blackbird doughnuts is an adorable shop on Tremont with a really great concept and neat variety of flavors. They are doing almost everything right with signage, instagram publicity and having an ever changing list of flavors that entice you to come in. If they can really get a handle on quality control and consistency of execution- they will have 5 star ratings. I come in to Blackbird probably once a week (I've stopped coming as often now because I'm getting fat- so once a month now) but gotta say there are times where the donuts are ON POINT and other times where they are just straight-up disappointing for their 3$ price tag. The last time I went, they were probably left in the oven a little too long and lost that sumptious fluffiness that we all enjoy. And since I used to go so often, I really could taste the variability in how they were baked, which is a little disappointing. This also matters for frosting too. The best frosting I have consistently had is the one on the lemon coconut. Kudos to you guys for getting that lemony-tang down in the frosting. The Ganache is on point too. Others, like the blueberry coconut- look delicious but are incredibly low on blueberry flavor and taste just like regular sweet frosting. Also, please please if you guys could cut down on the sweetness factor of the frosting- that would be amazing! So overall, I will say, you still gotta try Blackbird if you haven't been before. I can't guarantee that it will be drop-dead amazing, but it's worth a try. I still plan to frequent this place since it's down the street from me and perfect for Sunday mornings. I fear some people may not do the same. There is soooo much potential in this place, so they just need to get a reign on consistency and a good handle on their frosting and they'll be EVEN more poppin'!

Amazing. Not overly sweet and indulgent that left your tummy happy instead if hurting from a sugar overload. Have tried the salted toffee, strawberry rhubarb, and my personal favorite the blueberry coconut. All delicious and the shop's decorations are adorable

Absolutely nothing to write home about. I tried the vanilla glaze and the orange Hibiscus. They didn't even taste fresh and the flavors were just boring. The sizes were too big and the glazes too sweet, nothing gourmet about it. If it didn't make that claim I would give it another star.

I heard good things about the crazy flavors here. I got the pomegranate one and i liked the flavor BUT the doughnut was STALE.... That's very sad for a $3 doughnut... I think I will stick to Dunkin Doughnut for their glaze doughnut. Their doughnut is never stale and it's so much cheaper than this place.

Stopped here at 8am on a Friday to make sure they had plenty of doughnuts to choose from still. There were around 10 different flavors for full size doughnuts and 2 flavors of mini doughnuts. I bought a dozen ($36 is a bit steep..no discount there..) for a party at work and they were devoured. Everyone was raving over the interesting flavors. I really loved the apple filled one which had a rhubarb/cranberry tartness to it (so good)! They have nut-free options but the kitchen does have nuts in it. No vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free options. They do large catering orders in advance too.

The doughnuts are simply amazing. The flavors are unique and the donuts are decorated beautifully. When you take your first bite, it's like falling in love. The texture is soft and the flavor doesn't overpower the actual doughnut. It's not super sweet, not even the chocolate flavored ones. The employees were friendly and can make pretty good recommendations if you're overwhelmed by the wealth of choices. A+!

Holy...wow these donuts are awesome! Great customer service too! I thought Union Square donuts was the standard for "tricked out" donuts, but this place is much better in my opinion. I guess it depends on a) where you live and b) whether you prefer a hipster hangout with couches or more of a standard coffee shop atmosphere. They have more flavors than Union Square donuts and you can also drive and park in this area without feeling suicidal. Union Square's donuts are a bit bigger, but they're also more expensive. I can't believe I've lived in JP for three years now and never knew about this place! I'll be heading back for sure.
