Bailey & Sages' food is good but the service is terrible. I don't want to have to pay attention to make sure all the ingredients that are supposed to be in my salad actually are. The past three times I've gone something was missing from the salad. It's like they pick and chose what they want to put in it at that time. Aside from one or two girls, most of the employees seem pretty miserable and like they want nothing to do with the place. Again the food is good when it's made right. Consistency really needs to be the key to a menu like that and that doesn't seem to be going on.

Salads and sandwiches made like from pretty much an assembly line for the lunch crowd. Had the 100% All Natural Grilled Chicken and it was delicious enough that it almost put me to sleep during a work meeting. Service was nice and quick and if you come in a group, call ahead!

I'm updating this review after having lunch here today again. Previously, I had ordered online and thought that maybe all my forgotten ingredients were due to some technical miscommunication. Unfortunately, today's experience wasn't much better. I ordered a Waldorf Salad with chicken (very simple) and somehow they forgot my chicken. I even went after 2pm, hoping that it would be better if I went after the lunch rush. I checked the box as soon as I got outside and realized their mistake, so I turned around and went back in to have it fixed. After a lot of confusion (they thought I wanted a whole new *Caesar* salad) they added the chicken to my Waldorf Salad. I really want Bailey & Sage's customer service to be better than it is, because it is so damn yummy. Basically, the lesson is - watch everything that they put in your salad and don't be afraid to double check.

After receiving a thoughtful and considerate message from Michael, I decided to go back and try one of their salads. He made a fresh grilled shrimp Cesar salad for me that was delish! Round of applause to his appreciation for his customers and great service!

This is my go-to place for salads when I'm working at my office in the Financial District, and I probably get take-away salad from here at least 3-4 times a month. Like most other lunch-only establishments in the Financial District, customers are funneled through a line like cattle and order an item which is quickly assembled by the friendly salad folks behind the counter. And I have no problem whatsoever with this conveyor belt-style approach to lunch. I appreciate the German-like efficiency applied to my salad assembly, as I'd rather be eating a delicious, well-prepared salad then standing in line and waiting for it. Don't be daunted by a line 20 people deep; you will have your salad in about 5 minutes, regardless of how long the line might be. I've tried just about every signature salad they have, and they're all excellent. It's hard to choose, but the steakhouse salad is probably my favorite. The price of the signature salads range from $9.50 to $10.50. May seem a bit steep, but DON'T FORGET THAT YOU'RE IN THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT. The good folks that typically work in the FD would spend twice that much taking a 400ft cab ride from South Station to their office at even the slightest hint of rain, so dropping $10 on a salad is hardly a deal breaker. After such a glowing review, why not 5 stars you ask? While I appreciate their efficiency, the staff running the registers can actually become so efficient that they turn into credit card swiping machines and forget that they're dealing with human beings. Did I just buy a salad from a Terminator? Without fail, they almost always robotically bag my salad even after I say 'I don't need a bag'. In fact, no one needs a bag - everyone's office is like 50 feet away. People, please stop using bags and carry your damned 4x5x5 inch Chinese food-esque salad boxes back to your office!

Tried this place out yesterday as I was walking by looking for some lunch. What caught my eye was that the salads were chopped which happens a lot in NYC but seldom in Boston so I was immediately hooked. I got the chicken and goat cheese salad. It was fine, not great, but ok. My biggest issue with the place was the containers they serve the salads in. While on the outside they appear to be neat "Chinese food" containers in reality are awful. The salad dressing is all over the top of the container and the way the top opens it makes it hard to eat without getting salad dressing all over your hands and clothes. My solution was to cut off the flaps but then my scissors were covered in oil. I'm not that close to the place so I'm not sure if I'll be back. Had the salad been excellent I would surely take the extra couple of blocks to purchase but at the moment I'm not so sure.

I'm surprised to see some of the negative reviews for Bailey & Sage... I just finished my salad (first time customer), and I was delighted! Not sure if they changed some things, but during the prep phase, each of my veggies was scooped in with a different scoop, so that's one problem eliminated (not that I even care -- 99% of chopped salad places use the "toss it in the bowl with the tongs" method). Price is about $2 higher than I would hope for; the salad is a decent portion but it's not huge. My ingredients were fresh and delicious, and I'm not always a fan of chicken (my mind goes to chewy, fatty, and cubed once-frozen chunks of nasty), but this chicken was hot, freshly chopped, and juicy. The service was great! The line was long but there were plenty of employees expediting the process. I probably waited 4 full minutes. The server who made my salad was very friendly, fast, and got everything I wanted. Checkout was fast. The staff is running around all over the place to make these salads so there's a lot of interaction, and the staff is pretty young so it's a more relaxed atmosphere... But it's supposed to be! That stuff doesn't bother me because I'm getting A SALAD. FOR LUNCH. FROM A TAKE OUT ONLY PLACE. I'm not ordering a filet and a bottle of wine. Five stars for flavor and great service. Minus one star for no seating and cost. Regardless, I'll be back -- it was yummy!

I have a very narrow view of Bailey & Sage, because I get the same exact thing every time I go - a custom grilled chicken wrap - but it's always great. Yes, it's simple - a tortilla, swiss cheese, chicken, veggies, honey mustard. But it's so consistently good. The service is quick, I don't think prices are that outrageous (something like $6.95 for a custom wrap) and the sandwich line is non-existent because everyone else is getting a salad. I have to talk up the grilled chicken like a few other people have because it blows all the Cosi's/Sebastian's/Au Bon Pain/make your own salad places out of the water. Freshly grilled, warm, not gristle-y, perfectly cooked. They do it right. And when I ask for double chicken, they don't skimp. So thanks, Bailey & Sage, you are my new fave in the Financial District.

Dear whomever owns this establishment: Please train your front cashier staff - is it a requirement to be so sullen and bitter looking and have the attitude to match? I eat here twice a week because the salads are yum, but the final interaction with the very unhelpful and angry cashiers has me rethinking my salad love. Please, smile for the people - it's your job! And if you can't smile, you are in the wrong business!

This place is always packed. There is always a line for salad. Love chopped salads more than any other salads- the homogeneity of a salad somehow tricks you into eating lettuce. pretty expensive though........and my salad most likely has more calories than a big mac. the big mac of salads i guess. but it tastes great!

  • Amanda L.

I love this place. Sure the salads are a little pricey but who are we kidding? Take a look around - it's the Financial District... in Boston! A lot to think about here, folks. Anyways - I appreciate Bailey & Sage for their freshly tossed salads. I typically order the Greek salad - sometimes adding chicken (no olives), and it's great. Salads are made to order and the chicken is freshly cooked there. Other salad places tend to have previously frozen, cubed, strange, foreign, chewy chicken. Yuck! You can taste the freshness in the grilled chicken at Bailey & Sage - two thumbs up. While I don't think this place is worthy of running home to tell mom about I'll definitely be back based on convenience and freshness of the products.

So how does a shop go from 2 stars to 5 in my book? Sincerity. I came back a second time towards the end of the lunch rush today, and was greeted by a very enthusiastic staff--their energy was contagious. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Michael, who chatted amiably with me while I waited for my salad. I found out he's spent a lot of time training his staff since reading the yelpers' feedback. While most owners I know tend to despise yelpers :(, Michael was very much concerned--his reasoning being that Yelpers have no incentive to dole out bias reviews (sorry girls of yelp, he's married). I ordered a grilled shrimp caesar this time around, and was politely asked if I'd mind the 2 minute wait for fresh grilled shrimp--of course not! Surprisingly the salad made it back to my office in one piece where it was thoroughly enjoyed. Evenly and perfectly dressed, giant shrimps throughout, and surprisingly affordable for something with seafood. I'm so glad to see the changes Michael has made, and the sincerity in which Bailey and Sage is ran. I might have to ditch my usual mediterranean fare and become a regular here.

This place could be great, but the salad ingredients are all sloppy from the salads being made so fast. Pepper juice is squirting in every ingredient. Bits of god knows what are in the cheese.

  • Philippe C.

This place's special is SALAD! for salad lovers, they have all kinds made well. My favorite was the steakhouse salad. Im giving it 3 stars because these salads are too darn expensive. I used to work at State street in boston for 2 years and i would go there once a week at least. If salads were less than $9, i probably would've gone there everyday. Each year, sometimes seni-anually, they would be sneak and raise prices. No warnings whatsoever. Many of my co-workers stopped going there due to prices. Anyway, 3 stars. Work on prices and you might just be one of the best places for lunch in Boston! Philippe

  • Karishma R.

Overpriced and terrible customer service. The line moves quickly, but the salads are seldom made with all the right advertised ingredients and the staff is straight up rude and unhelpful. I'd recommend going around the corner to Boston Kebab if you want a good salad.

    (1)
  • Melissa W.

This place has the nastiest bunch of girls behind a counter making salads that I have ever experienced. I've gone here multiple times because it's close to my office and good salad places are scarce, but this was officially the last time I will subject myself to these incredibly rude people and would encourage you not to waste your time. If I wanted to receive attitude and dirty looks, I'd go somewhere I didn't have to pay $12 for them. Get a new staff or teach them some client service.

Go to lunch pit stop... I must say the salad artist Richardi made it feel like fine dining.

    (5)
  • Julia K.

The salads are hearty and come in a variety of pre-selected mix-ins or you can create your own salad. I think the sandwiches and wraps are a better alternative than the salads. We order lunch here off of seamless, so perhaps, the food is better when it is eaten at the restaurant. I typically order the california wrappini - big chunks of grilled chicken, onions, peppers, avocado & cheddar cheese. The wrap comes pressed and sometimes can be a bit oily. I've also tried to the traditional make your own sandwiches. If you select jalapeno cheese don't be surprised if you get cubes of jalapeno cheese in your sandwich rather than a slice of cheese.

Came here a couple of times in the past 2 weeks, and got their Cobb salad with grilled shrimp. Without a doubt, the BEST salad I've ever had. The service was fast when I went (but would depend on when you go obviously). I'm officially doing this place, at a minimum, once a week.

amazing salads. That always seems like an oxymoron, but they do them right here. I just wish their service was a bit friendlier, but hey, it's whatevs.

Ordered a chicken and goat cheese salad and they forgot the goat cheese. It ruined my day. Other than that, their salads are the bomb when they are prepared correctly.

Went today for frozen yogurt. The woman working the counter had zero customer service skills. The guys who are normally there in the afternoon (I think one is one of the owners) are annoying but bearable. This woman was plain rude. Also, they jacked up the price of the froyo - it's now more than $6, and they are skimping on how much froyo you actually get - instead of piling it up above the top of the cup, it's about an inch below the top of the cup. My coworker and I used to go here at least once a week in the summer for froyo, but decided as we walked out the door that we will not be returning. There are other froyo places around. I've only had the panini once, and it was greasy.

I was happy when the owner reached out to me regarding the not so great review I posted previously. He wanted to make things right & get another chance. So I obliged & he not only gave me a sandwich at no cost but my co-worker as well. How awesome is that? He is a friendly person who cares about his business & it shows. Thanks to Michael for making it right, I will be back again.

I've been going to Bailey & Sage in the Financial District for over 3 years now. They have the best selection of salads, sandwiches, and wraps! There's plenty of options and all of the ingredients are always fresh. Also, the service is great. The staff is very cordial and attentive (they know exactly how I like my salads without me asking), and even if the line is long, it moves very quickly.

  • Dawn A.

I had a grilled chicken sandwich. It was delicious. The bacon on it was crispy, the aioli was a nice complement to the sandwich. The tomato was substantial. All in all, a solid sandwich. My only complaint was the price. I walked out of there $10 and change poorer. I didn't order any drinks or chips. That was just the sandwich. I was sort of surprised when the cashier asked me for $10.30 for my sandwich. I am used to downtown prices, but this seemed high for a take out place. While it was good, I don't see myself returning too often to buy $10 sandwiches. The service and cleanliness of the place were fine. I really can't complain except I felt the price was excessive for a sandwich delivered to me in a bag.

Just MEH. Got the Cobb with chicken. Lacked any flavor .. one entire piece of bacon just thrown in. Chicken was boring. Crazy expensive. Not worth it.

UGH! They are obviously trying to be a Sweet Greens/Hipster/Clover kind of place but there are many reasons to why they are not: not appealing ingredients, price/value ratio is off, strange system which doesn't work, and not very tasty food. I went once and decided that Clover next door in Kendall Square is 150 times better.

  • Alissa P.

Went for the first time, new location opened in Kendall Square near work. I saw it last week and noticed some tofu on the menu and was intrigued. Went with coworkers, it was hectic, yet orders came fast. The system there is not super clean, all different lines for different things but it is new, it will take some time to get organized I am sure. I wanted the vegan Reuben, they were already out of Seitan at noon (it's only Wednesday?) - so maybe as a new place it needs to order more than they think. So I settled for a tofu Asian wrap. I did not know what it was going to come in due to the description, it didnt mention the bread - it came in a large orange wrap, the tofu tasted good, sweet sauce, but there was just a hint of the flavor, not a whole lot of the extra sauce, and the veggies on it were just raw carrot and cucumber, no flavor to those. Would've made the sandwich better... to have seasoned veggies or more flavor to go with it. The sandwich was huge, nice for the price of $10, but I can make fancier sandwiches. I wish more places around here had interesting vegan/veg options with flavor. Will be back to try a salad and maybe a bowl - need to ask that they prepare the bowls without meat separately from those that add meat to them, I would watch out there - they just had 4 woks going at once... hard to tell for those that prefer Non-meat touched things like myself. They had 3 soup options as well, couldn't find the prices, and they looked veg friendly - but Tomato bisque on a hot summer day is not appealing to me. Going to give another shot though. My coworkers were happy with their chicken sandwiches, and a chocolate cannoli.

3.5 stars. PROS: good salad, pricey for the fact that protein (chicken) isn't included, but good nonetheless! CONS: no seating and unprofessional staff- I'm very reserved and can be a bit stiff at times, but this wasn't me being hyper sensitive and by the looks of previous reviews, this is typical. The employees playfully yelled "shut up" at each other probably because I was the only customer in the store, still very unprofessional. Then the guy who seemed to be someone of authority came in and contributed to the ruckus, no surprise because what employees do is what they get away with and it all starts at the top. I stood there for a few minutes debating on which salad I wanted to try.. I went with the Caesar (photos attached) and although I was apprehensive to even give them any business after their blatant disregard to my existence, I'm always down to try a new salad spot in the area. The container seemed small, but as I ate I realized they'd jammed a lot a salad in that thing and was very satisfied. Prices are similar to that of Cosi Cafe (up the street), but Cosi provides chicken so I've got to take off a start for that. The salad was definitely fresh though and I will be back to try the froyo everyone's raving about! Bottom line: I would recommend, provided you don't mind dealing with the unprofessional foolery.

There wasn't a line in this place today, went in around 12:30 but it is the slowest time of year in the financial district. The staff was okay, there wasn't many people so can't really say. I do agree with the others in terms of cleanliness of the utensils and prepping food though. Each item should have it's own tong/scoops. They use a single tong to take out whatever they make for your own salad, but it's not like everybody is ordering the same thing. This could affect people that have allergies or just cant bear the taste of certain things. The salads come in a take out (chinese take out style) container boxes. I don't really think this is the best container to put it in. The price is pretty expensive for a salad, but it's expected in financial district. I wouldn't come back here unless if they do serve and prep differently. Between this and Tossed, I would defintely recommend Tossed instead.

Great food, which is the only reason for 2 stars. Super expensive. Worst staff ever. I just walked in there, only customer in the store, and the girl working (only staff member in sight so it wasn't like she was distracted by a fellow co-worker) didn't glance up to the point that it was awkward and I had to ask if they were even open, to which she replied "Yea, what do you want". I got a great cobb salad but wow. Mizzzzz. I should mention - this is not the first time I've received horrible service here.

I will never come back to this place ever again after my experience today. In the past i have come here for salads but todays experience was completely and totally out of control. My friend and i walked into the place and stood there waiting at the counter and there was a girl and a guy at the reg talking and they did not acknowldge us once ( and they knew we were there). There was also a blonde gentleman about 5"7 or 5"8 behind the counter-near the window- talking on his cell phone and he ALSO knew we were there and did not acknowledge us. We had waited long eough and decided to leave. Again, ive been here many times but will absolutley never return based on this experience.

After my last review, the owner reached out and asked me to come in for lunch on him. The two brothers who run Bailey & Sage seem to be working hard to improve their customer service, and I was treated with much kindness when I stopped in. The salad was delicious as usual, and they also had me try the Chicken Tortellini soup - phenom. I'll definitely continue to stop in here, and I genuinely hope they're able to do well and provide more and more positive experiences for their customers.

  • Darlene C.

I've walked by this place a few times and decided to give it a try today. I wasn't impressed. I had a custom chopped salad and it was bland. You may be thinking it could have been the items I had added, but the tomatoes tasted frozen, the artichoke hearts had no flavor, the chicken was like tofu and although they doused my salad with "balsamic vinaigrette" there was NO flavor...so I was eating wet, bland salad...not appetizing or satisfying. Plus, it cost me almost $13 for the salad and a water. I probably won't go back, and though I had grabbed a take out menu on my way out, that, along with most of the $11 salad, is now in the trash.

    (2)
  • Melissa E.

I got the grilled Reuben sandwich. The sandwich was huge and pretty good. I felt the price was good for the amount of food you get. The restaurant was small with no where to sit so I had to walk a good way back to my room to eat it. I would have liked a smaller sandwich for lunch, but it may be a good size for a guy.

  • Yelpie G.

Ok, so yeah, avoid this place if you want the salad that you ordered while standing in line. Did I say salad? I meant EXPENSIVE salad. I ordered the Cobb with chicken and was handed a pile of mashed iceberg lettuce, a strip of bacon and blobs of avocado, blue cheese and chicken all packed tightly into in a Chinese food container. And the counter person spared none of her righteous indignation when I turned down her offer to slather it in Honey Mustard dressing. Ummmm, hello what? $10+ for something that I could have created and then destroyed all by myself? Oh hellz no!

  • Marissa S.

New to the area and checking out all the new lunch places..this is conveniently located on State St and a few co-workers recommended the salads. I ordered a Caesar salad with shrimp. It is delicious! The shrimp tastes very fresh and there is a good amount of it in there for $2.50. The lettuce is also fresh and I like how they use new utensils for each salad. Everyone comments about the price and it is a bit pricey but worth it. I'll be back for sure -- next on my list: southwest salad and maybe a froyo for the walk to the commuter rail :-)

  • Clara S.

Bailey and Sage is one of the best lunch spots I've been to in Boston! Some previous reviews have said that it's on the pricier side, but I have to disagree based on the quality of their ingredients. Everything I've ordered from there has continuously been excellent quality and is a nice change from other salad/sandwich shops in the neighborhood. The staff always exceed my expectations at customer service as everyone is very friendly and attentive. Everyone needs to go try Bailey and Sage!!

  • Adam E.

I don't know why lunch spots downtown have such a hard time with lines and labeling. Bailey and Sage is a pretty serious offender, with their two "lines" that don't flow into the register line, and barely perceptible signs indicating which is which. I never even realized they had frozen yogurt, since the ordering experience requires one to get into battle-mode and tune out all sensory input other than your pre-determined order. Examining the different options is next to impossible, since they're spread out on the wall and you can't just roam in and out of lines to get a better view of what's up there. Looking around at the menus seems almost dangerous! I've only ever ordered the Steakhouse Salad. It has mixed greens, steak, blue cheese and fried onions in it, and why would I stray from that? I always ask for no tomatoes and it's a problem about half the time. The first time I ordered and asked for no tomatoes, the girl didn't hear me and put them in. I saw her putting them in and said,"Wait, I said no tomatoes," to which she scowled and said, "You want me to take them out?" I gave her an O Rly? and said, "As long as they're not in my salad." I returned, even though she was a poop, because that was a damn good salad. Another time a guy was trying to flirt with that same girl and very nearly put the tomatoes in, when I repeat-yelled, "No tomato!" And he was way nicer, acknowledging that I did ask him to hold the tomatoes. The salads are pretty big and really delicious, so the price tag is somewhat tolerable. But the ordering experience is difficult, and staff is hit or miss. Still, if you want a really good salad made right in front of you with fresh, high-quality ingredients, this spot will do the job.

They're salads are fresh and they have some really good chicken salad. I work in the building right above them and have been there many times. The staff are always super friendly and outgoing so I am a little surprised at the negative reviews here.

  • Shari J.

Eh, not too impressed with the salads. You're limited to 4 toppings, or else it's 50 cents for each topping beyond that. Booo. I'm used to my unlimited toppings at Sebastian's, so having to omit broccoli and chow mein noodles really made me sad. The salad itself was average, however I don't really get the slice-n-dice with the pizza wheel. The frozen yogurt blender machine looks interesting (reminds me of Cabots in Newton). Perhaps that will be my next Bailey conquest.

I come here too much. I work right next door. I'm a fan of Level-up and this is one of the few places nearby where I can use it. I pretend like I'm healthy and getting "salads". All in all, solid lunch foods. There's a lot of variety in the salads they make, and I 'm only starting to check out the sandwiches. They make a mean reuben. The chicken pesto is next on my target list. $9 for lunch is pushing it though. I wish their prices were just a tad bit cheaper. But hey, I also which I had a million bucks. And that doesn't look it's happening either. sad times.

  • Laurel H.

I had a decent salad. It probably wasn't worth the $9 price tag. It DEFINITELY wasn't worth the terrible treatment. It's a shame because I was kind of excited to go back and try the FroYo.

I ordered an $8+ salad. It came with lettuce, some veggies, some cheese and some meat. No, just kidding, you don't get meat in a salad for only $8+change -- that would be crazy! (Well, maybe...would you like some turkey in your salad? Maybe some chopped ham? No? You want some regular grilled chicken or steak or something? Okay then, yeah, only $8+change for a salad with meat is crazy!). To quote B&S's website "Artisan...salads are made to order daily, with only the freshest and highest end all-natural meats, cheeses, and produce." Freshest and highest end produce huh? Let me tell you, I've seen fresher and higher quality lettuce...at Haymarket...at the end of a sweltering hot July Saturday...in the large bins behind the produce stands where the sign saying "3 bags of lettuce - $1" has been crossed out in favor of "All you can fit in a wheeled cart - $1" When I got my salad, which fits into a 32 fl oz container, I thought maybe they made a mistake and took a salad that had been made last week and gave it to me by accident (or rather, gave me half of it by accident). I started pulling all the rotting lettuce out of the container, but soon realized if I expected my stomach to be half filled at the end of my lunch I was going to have to leave some of it in. As I ate, I thought about two things. 1) How dang good must their sandwiches be to stay in business with salads like this, and 2) How some of the more far gone pieces of lettuce didn't simply disintegrate in the washing process (at least I hope it was washed that morning). Highest end produce from B&S? That's the highest of BS. Next time I want a salad at that price level in the area I'll head over to Sam LaGrassa's -- twice the size and much better quality. In fact, given the growling in my stomach 30 minutes after I ate, I may need to go there right now.

I'm currently noshing on what seems like half a pound of Bailey and Sage oreo-strawberry fro-yo. Well, only halfway through, but I'm determined to hit the bottom of the cup! I might fall into a diabetic coma along the way, but oh soooo good.

I wasn't entirely impressed with their food or service. I went in at 2:25 during the week last week and they were just about ready to close their doors... For their closing time of 3 PM (they reopen for dinner). I got a Cobb salad without the egg for a little less than $10. It was too expensive for a mediocre salad, I will probably not be returning which is too bad because I work right off state street. Bummer.

I think the customer service has gone down hill over the past 6mo or so. I find that the staff is definitely less attentive after the core lunch rush. I have had a couple of experiences where there were many people standing around while I am the only one waiting to order a salad. Another time I got all the way back up to my office to discover they forgot to pack the dressing I requested on the side in the bag. It's a shame the food is good but the service does put a damper on the experience.

Solid lunch offering. I've only ordered salads and frozen yogurt from this place, but I come back despite a relatively expensive price-tag. They offer shrimp in their salads, which is the main reason I frequent this place, and the salads are pretty damn good. You can make your own combination or you can order from their other salad offerings. My favorite is the southwestern salad yumm. The salads normally run around $10 with tax, and only last one lunch (unlike Boston Kebab House nearby which I can normally stretch into two lunches). My friends get the sandwiches here, which they make to order. One friend ordered some sort of steak sandwich and they basically grilled the meat in front of you. He loved it. The frozen yogurt is deliciousss! Again, lots of options as far as this goes (non-fat versus low-fat yogurt, mixins, etc). and the staff is always really nice and helpful. I stood in front of them for ages pondering which mixins I should get and they were laughing at me as I turned down their suggestions until I found one that sounded good :) There's no place to sit down and lines can get pretty long around 12:30 or so, so plan accordingly. Will definitely go back to this place again and again!

I like this place and their $10 sandwiches. The quality is good (the grilled chicken doesn't have that weird re-heated chicken flavor, so that earns them quick points in my book), and the selection offers more than just the basics, which I appreciate. And you know what? I pay nearly $10 for lunch at Panera too, except the food actually tastes good here and that money is going into the local community. I can't attest to the salads here, however, because I haven't worked in the financial district long enough to be required to eat a salad for lunch like everyone else seems to be. Seriously, what's with that?

The brisket sandwich was a life affirming journey of taste-bud self discovery. Piping hot, pan fried ingredients nestled into really good bread, then grilled. A+++++ Would do business with again.

Good lunch option but $8-9.50 for a salad or sandwich is pushing it.

I enjoy the salads - everything appears fresh. I enjoy the bread - homemade - but they are not consistent with providing. Sometimes they give it and other times they don't. The salads are on the pricey side. Complaint - owner was flirting with two young women when I was waiting in line to pay - my salad was on the counter by him. Advise - If you want to keep your customers, you should treat them all the same - be curtious, respectful, and flirt on your own time. I was there during my lunch break, and I didn't appreciate the owner, of all people, taking up my time. I'll think twice before I go there again.

I have no complaints about my salad. Loved it. However, the staff is SO rude. Terrible customer service. Will have to think twice about going back. Had to wait 5 minutes with no one else in the store, and then finally had to ask if I could be served. Tried it again today. 1) It smelled like a barn inside 2) We asked for bread and were given it after the guy bobbled it off the register and counter, gross 3) Got a bottle of soda to go, only to realize that it had leaked all over the inside of my bag because it had already been opened (by someone other than myself). All around gross experience. Don't do it.

Oh man, what a disappointment. I went here for lunch when I worked down the street because I was craving a fresh, gourmet sandwich. I definitely could have made a better sandwich on my own. I got the grilled caprese panini and the ingredients were both meh and large/difficult to eat. I expected to savor the sandwich, but I ended up tossing about a quarter of it because I just wasn't enjoying it at all. Not only that, but it was a long wait even though it wasn't very busy. I wouldn't be so upset about it, except I paid nearly TEN DOLLARS for this sandwich. The price is a bigger problem for me because I'm a marketing intern vs. a financial professional, but I am more than willing to pay that price if the sandwich is exceptional, but it was far from it. My co-worker has tried a salad here too, and she was also disappointed. The only premium aspect of this eatery is the price.

No, no, no, no.. emphatically and all together now: No! I am really surprised by some of the good reviews, though they probably aren't for the salads. I've gone here twice and they have struck out both times, so we're done. Don't call me, I'll call you... My first experience was maybe two or three weeks after they opened. I ordered a chicken and goat cheese salad. The person making my order seemed a little confused, but with the giant menu looming over his head, he managed to pull it together. I paid the $9.90 for my salad, with no bread, and trekked back to my office only to discover that my salad had tuna in it. I picked at it and ate what I could, but it got acquainted with my trash bin real fast. And then I found myself at my desk today, craving a chicken and goat cheese salad. I wrestled with going back, given my first experience, but decided to give it a second chance. I did actually want to like this place. But while they actually got my order right this time (and I even got bread, yay for carbs), the salad fell flat. It was tasteless! There wasn't enough dressing, it was dry the whole way through, and it just didn't taste fresh or good. So disappointing. And then there is that ridiculous take-out box... The one star for this review actually comes from the hilariously placed U-turn sign for salads. You walk in, get in line, and then there is a funny arrow instructing you to, essentially, bang a u-turn for the salad line! The only ridiculously amazing thing about the place. Overall, I can't see any reason to go here, especially when Sebastians is closeby and offers MUCH tastier salads for the same price.

The rock crab sandwich was AMAZING. It was crab, grilled asparagus, and a chipotle, dill & cucumber aioli on a baguette. Delicious. I wish I had one right now.

So today I have a truly gross experience with my salad at Bailey and sage. They were out of a bunch of the veggies for the roasted veggie salad so I decided to go with a chef's salad. This salad comes with roast beef, ham, and turkey. The quality of the meat in the salad was so repulsive that it was enough to make me want to be a vegetarian. Maybe I'm spoiled because most of the meat I eat these days is organic but it was disgusting. Their version of meat was fatty cubes or super processed strangely colored "meat like substance". I was so totally grossed out by it that I had to go through my salad and pick it all out. I really cannot see myself giving Bailey and Sage another chance after this past experience. Any restaurant that can be OK with serving meat like that is not OK in my book.

I absolutely love their salads and they are HUGE... I haven't had the sandwiches yet so I can only vouch for the salads- Fresh ingredients... really good chicken (I hate processed chicken and I can tell when places are lying about "fresh" chicken...) - the steak (today) looked tender enough to cut with a spoon. If you don't like the menu choices, create your own salad. I think they are big enough to share. I'm not sure why people complain about long lines during the lunch rush in the middle of the financial district in Boston - If you can't stand waiting, get your food at 11:30 or 1:30. I never have a problem if I just wait a little longer. I do agree with some that the food is pricey but it is very good quality and I don't mind paying extra for a large, fresh salad every so often. My one odd complaint is that the salads come in these weird hybrid chinese food carton thingys that are deep and hard to eat out of because of the 4 flaps on top. If I could give Bailey & Sage some constructive criticism, it would be to find a more manageable container that I can eat out of on a park bench!

I had the Southwestern Salad yesterday. It was DELICIOUS. It comes in a chinese style to-go box except a little bigger. It is PACKED in there though so its very filling. It is a little pricey- about $8.75 I think I paid. They didnt skimp on the toppings either! There was lots of chicken in my salad and a good ratio of lettuce-to-toppings.. I would recommend this place if you dont mind paying $9 for a big salad. They also have some yummy fro-yo :)

Two lines diverged in a Boston restaurant; And, sorry I could not wait in both and be one diner, Long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it... RESULTED IN CHAOS. When I saw this place from the street, I wanted to love it. Sleek, clean new spot in the financial at which to meet my working friends and family members for lunch. Plus one star just for added variety. Upon entry, the chaos began. Two lines: one for salad, one for sandwiches. Also, two registers, where - I e-ven-tu-al-ly found -- you pay after you order. The sandwich line branches to the left and the salad line branches to the right, but you have to access both lines from the back of the store where people sort of awkwardly pool. It was uncomfortable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fun Fact: Crowds make me nervous. That's called Agoraphobia. After the Greek "agora" -- meaning "market"/"open place of assembly." Meaning clusterfuck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I finally got my food, paid for it, got the hell outta dodge (because there's no room for dining-in here) and conferred with my sister, we decided that the food was too expensive. The steak in my sandwich was deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection, but it was cut too thickly to reasonably be eaten in sandwich form without razor-sharp incisors or utensils. My sister's salad was large and made to order, but it cost an extra $2.50 on top of the base charge of $6.75 to add chicken -- and $9.25 is a little steep for a salad to go. The chocolate chip cookie was YUMMY, the employees were friendly and - since this was only their first week in business - I'm sure they'll iron out some of the line quirks in the near future. Not somewhere I can afford to eat on the regular, but I'd definitely try it again in a month or two.

Overpriced. If they knocked a couple bucks off the total price of walking out of there with a sandwich, chips, and a drink - I would be willing to try it out more and see if it were better. I don't like spending $12 on that kind of basic lunch. Funny story... I ordered the chicken salad at B&S once and it tasted like tuna. I don't normally return items b/c I do enjoy almost everything, but when you're in the mood for chicken salad and expect chicken salad and you get that tuna taste - it's a bit of a shocker. Not to mention a let down on a $12 lunch. I brought it back and the girl tried to tell me that it wasn't tuna. We stood there for literally five minutes debating whether or not it was tuna, one of the most unmistakable tastes in the world. This wasn't B&S fault, nor even the girl that was working (it's possible some tuna jumped into the chicken salad bin). I felt like including it here b/c it's a good story for a person already annoyed at paying $12 for a sandwich and chips. Debating on whether or not what I just put in my mouth was tuna fish. Crazy. PS: The management was really nice about it and when they saw the girl arguing w/ me they offered to get me whatever sandwich I wanted in place of that one. I ended up just eating the tuna/chicken salad hybrid having felt foolish enough for debating it for five minutes.

When I first heard ANOTHER salad place was opening by my office building, I was not excited. I figured it'd be the same old thing, like all the other soup/salad places around. To my surprise, Baily and Sage is great! I've only ever gotten salads, and they are all amazing. I've had to steak and goat cheese salad numerous times, and the cobb--both are delicious! Also, do not overlook their frozen yogurt. I will be eating this all the time when it gets warm out. It's a little pricey at about $5, but you get a HUGE tub of frozen yogurt and you can pick what goes in it. Also, it isn't super unhealthy (unless you want it to be). The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because it's a little pricey, but then again, what salad place in the financial district isn't?

  • David L.

They're still experiencing growing pains, which explains some of the confusion - there's no signage indicating that you need to wait in different lines depending on whether you want a sandwich or a salad - but I imagine they'll work this out. The interior is nice and clean, the staff friendly, although a bit disorganized - again growing pains. It's relatively pricey, but not overly so for the area - on a par with Sebastien's, for example. I had the Italiano, it was good, not great, but I'll go back to try the Paninis and their salads. Overall, they'll need to do something to stand out - for sandwiches, Sam LaGrassa's is the place, and in my opinion Sebastien's give you more salad options.

My taste buds sing and zing every time I get my lunch here. Granted, I've only ordered salads -- but it's safe to say that I'm a big fan. Good portion size, and I don't mind the takeout boxes. I think it makes the presentation prettier, actually. Great service; the employees are always super friendly, and really personalize the experience. I feel like they actually care, and more than once employees have made me smile and brightened my day, as cheesy as that sounds. My only issue with Bailey & Sage is the price point. The portions are good, but I pay at least $10 for my salad when I come here, and that's a lot. Today, I got charged an extra $1.25 for three small pieces of broccoli... Really? That's BS, B & S. Buuuut I do love the salads and the service, and those factors definitely outweigh price for me. So four stars (five if my taste buds were writing this review).

i used a living social coupon at bailey and sage today ($1 for $10 of take-out food), and while the salad was pretty good, i thought it was way too expensive to consider purchasing on a daily basis.

I heart Bailey and Sage... Mostly. I'm pretty much the fattest of fat kids when it comes to lunch, and have been known to get two sandwiches on occasion, add that to a love of a giant salad with more than just cheese on it, and you get a giant W for WIN! I hate dressing and it's hard to find somewhere who can still make a tasty salad sans dressing. Woo hoo Bailey and Sage! The Chinese take out boxes that your salad come in are just weird, but I am glad they pack that thing to the brim! The menu is a little overwhelming, and the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. But when another side salad simply won't do this is my new go-to. But seriously $12 for a salad and a bag of chips? That's highway robbery! So I deducted a star.

I work in advertising so we always have lunch and learns with vendors. However, we found ourselves in a recurring cycle of the same places in the surrounding Back Bay area. We were definitely looking to try something new! A rep brought Bailey and Sage salads in for us for one meeting and we've been HOOKED ever since. My favorite is the Grilled Asian salad with Asian Ginger vinaigrette, but I've also had the Chicken and Goat Cheese which was delicious as well. The salads I've had have been extremely fresh, crisp and the perfect switch-up to the typical lunch menu of sandwiches, pizza, etc. I've only tried their salads, but I HIGHLY recommend Bailey and Sage to anyone in Boston!

I went during lunch on a weekday - so yes, there was a loooong line. Very typical of any place in the Financial District. It was my first time & I went because I heard they had pretty good sandwiches & salads & I had a $2 credit on LevelUp. I opted for a Grilled Caprese Sandwich...the sandwich station was very understaffed but those guys were hustling! There was a little mix up and my order was forgotten, but one of the guys (Matt) realized his mistake, made me one & gave it to me on the house, which was unnecessary but very appreciative. I swear, other places I've had way worse service & had to wait even longer and no one even apologized, so a free lunch was very unexpected. The sandwich: huge. larger than my face. It was an average mozzarella & tomato sandwich, but I think their other sandwiches are probably more extravagant, so I'll have to try one of those next time I go back - which I definitely will.

YUM sums it up. Where can you get quality ingredients, huge portions and deliciousness fast? HERE! The sandwiches are massive. The salads fill you up for the entire day. The soups are like home-made. They are a bit on the pricier side compared to their neighbors, but honestly worth every penny. Also a big fan of their branding and packaging :)

Chopped salads are delish and there is a huge variety of dressings, however this place is a plurge for me. Its definitely not wallet friendly but its pretty cool to get salad in a chinese take out container!

I've honestly never been completely satisfied from this place, but for some reason I keep trying may be because I live around the corner. There sandwiches are just okay ,service is kind of slow....the only reason of going their is the frozen yogurt which is awesome, but every thing is little on the pricey side...

To preface this review, I too tried to go into this place the first week they opened as it is next door from my office. WWAAYYY too unorganized - we decided to go somewhere else that was less crowded. The guys I work with went back that same week and said the sandwiches were ok but not as good as Al's, so they weren't impressed. Fast forward to today, which is two to three weeks after they opened. My friend and I decided we were in the mood for salad and decided to give it another go. I really like the salad set up they have - being from a restaurant background, I like the fact that I can look at everything and decide what looks good that day, (eg. the asparagus looked a little sad so I 86'd that from my salad then added bacon which was crispy and delicious. The tomatoes were uber fresh, and the blue cheese dressing was homemade, (and believe me I can tell the difference). The little container is easy to use now because they REALLY mix your salad for you before they put it into the chinese-food takeout thing. I just finished scraping the bottom of my container, my salad was that good. Take away - I have no idea what the sandwiches are like, but I'm REALLY impressed with the salads. Came with a hunk of bread (must be a new thing given the previous comment on the lack of bread), everything was mixed well, and I can see EVERYTHING that goes into my salad before it makes its way in there so I can be finicky and add only what looks the freshest, (and the guy making my salad was totally cool with me being picky). I'm sure they still have some kinks to work out but for the salad, I'd go back everyday. The one piece of advice I'd have for the manager/owner is to get some soup choices in as well - I totally would have given this place 5 stars had they had a soup and salad combo that rocked as much as my salad did.

I made the mistake of trying this place for the second time since they opened a few years ago and was yet again disappointing. The women that took my order didn't listen to me when I said no cucumbers, she put way too many olives and not nearly enough feta cheese. And on top of it all, the menu had the extra cost of meat (chicken in this case) blacked out so I didn't realize it was $2.50 extra. So $12 later I'm left with a salad I didn't even really like. The portions are pretty good but that is an absurd amount for a salad. They should have a smaller size that cost less. Either way I think I'll stick to the dozens of better places in the financial district for half the price.

Bailey and Sage is awesome if you want a wrap or salad, and their Blend frozen yogurt is AMAZING. The staff are generally pretty friendly. The veggies and wraps all seem to be pretty fresh. However, I guess it's the downtown Boston touch... they're overpriced. I got a wrap and a fro-yo this afternoon, and it was $17... really? I could have had a sit-down meal for that, with free water and more selection. Definitely a once every while place for this type of lunch but it's good if you're trying to eat healthy.

Never had their food, but their frozen yogurt is AMAZING. I think it's the best frozen yogurt I've ever had - kind of like a gourmet blizzard from Dairy Queen, but oh so much better.

Want a really fresh salad with lots of choices for greens, toppings, and dressings? Well folks this is the place to go! You can choose from a salad that has been already dreampt up for you on the menu or have a salad of your own creation. After you have picked you poison you can then stand there and watch while your salad is chopped up right before your eyes! I Loathe big leafy salad, so this is my salad dream. The leaves are now bite size and full of flavor from mixing with all the delicious toppings. Plus you can get all of that for a price less than a cosi salad ! Baily and sage also makes great sandwiches that are bursting at the seems with fresh ingredients worth the price! and one last thing. If you like fro yo..... you need not go one step further. honest to goodness... it was the best blended fro yo treat I have EVER had!

A welcome addition to the neighborhood for those of us seeking new lunch spots in the Financial District. Just opened yesterday, offering higher-quality fare than most other options in the area. I grabbed one of their menus and am getting hungry again just looking at it. Plus, great service -- because eventually you grow tired of getting yelled at by the staff at Al's across the street.

I was expecting a lot out of this new sandwich shop but was sadly disappointed. Three people in my office had gone and raved about the steak and cheese so I decided I should go too. I order the chicken pesto panini which was sort of good. Sort because the middle was good but the edges were so hard that I had to cut around them. For a $9 sandwich I was expecting a lot more. Next time I will just get the steak and cheese but if this fails my taste test I will have to write you off B&S.

I wrote this review back in September 2010: Bailey & Sage is a new Sandwich/Salad shop on State Street in Boston. They have been open just over a month during which I have eaten lunch at their business on three different occasions. Upon entering you will notice that this does not appear t be your average Mom & Pop eatery. The decor is much more upscale which is commensurate with its location in the Financial District. Everything is extremely clean and the menus on the wall are easy to read. The one downside is that there are no chairs and tables so you are forced to take your meal with you. They are well staffed and despite the moderate lunch rush there was no pressure to get in line, place your order and get out as with other similar places in the area. The employees also make it a point to thank you by name both when you pay and after your order is handed to you. This may not seem like much but it is a nice touch and I appreciate this attention to detail. For my first meal I ordered the "California Wrappini" (a cleaver name for a wrap grilled like a panini). The chicken was seasoned well and I enjoyed the sundried tomato aioli but the caramelized onions were a little undercooked for my tastes. Had they be called sautéed onions I don't think I would have given the texture a second thought. The raw avocado was a little overpowering. I would have reduced this ingredient or including some additional seasoning. My second meal was approximately a week later where I ordered the "Grilled Pesto Chicken Panini". Wondering if they would make changes to an order I substituted the Artisan whole wheat bread with a grilled wheat wrap. The pesto chicken was tender and the flavor profile is exactly what you would expect. I am a big fan of vegetables on my sandwiches so I was looking forward to the roasted red peppers and grilled zucchini. Unfortunately I found them to be rather light in quantity. They were used more to flavor the sandwich rather than as a significant component. Today, I ordered the "Steak" Sandwich and opted to include the available caramelized onions, peppers and mushrooms. I had high hopes but this was my least favorite of the three. The steak did not appear to be seasoned and was a little bloody for my tastes. I can appreciate a medium rare steak but I prefer juices to be clear on a sandwich. Again the vegetables were lacking however the caramelized onions were much better prepared this time. I go back and forth on my option of the bread. It is much thicker and tougher than I would have liked however I believe that anything else would have become soggy before I walked back to my office. Overall the meals were decent. They certainly were not bad. I frequently travel on business and would not turn it down in most cases however in Boston there are dozens of restaurants within a stone's throw and you can find a more enjoyable and less expensive meal nearby. I make this review with one caveat. Bailey & Sage is brand new. It takes any restaurant awhile to get their legs and there are almost always alterations to the menu. Some dishes are removed, some added and others refined. To their credit I have noticed that they have already made changes that appear to be a result of other reviews I have read. There is great potential at Bailey & Sage and I will visit again.

I ordered the Turkey Rachel Sandwich today, the place was empty so it was not like they were rushing. I waited several minutes at the counter before anyone even noticed me. Then they made my sandwich with stale bread. I mean I couldn't bite into it. If you get a sandwich ask them for fresh bread.

This place recently opened down the block from my job, and I'm so happy it did! I have only gotten the frozen yogurt (which I love, but is a little pricey) but can't wait to check out their salads. Bailey and Sage is clean, professional, friendly.. but didn't bump to 5 stars due to price.

  • Howe L.

3.5 stars. The salads are quite good - fresh ingredients and high enough quality for sit-down. However, the small box of salad is far from filling and it's also pricey - close to 10 bucks for a salad. At that point, I'd prefer a sit-down.

This place makes a great salad, albeit a bit on the pricey side. I'm literally eating it while I type this and it's delicious. The only thing that has disappointed me on my 2 trips here (both in this first week in operation, so I cut them some slack) is the waste of food that I saw today. The guy that took my order misheard 'pears' for 'carrots' somehow and when I corrected him he tossed out the whole base bowl of spinach rather than just giving me the extra 50 cents worth of carrots. That was really too bad. The food is really good though...

i want to like this place. i really do. unfortunately you struggle in the customer service/satisfaction department. and as many other reviewers have noted, your prices are fairly high compared to the 10 other salad places around the block that offer unlimited veggies. always intrigued to try a new, seemingly 'fresher' non-chain lunch place, i was excited when this place opened. my first couple of salads were ok - nothing amazing as i had hoped but i chalked it up to new kinks. it also took me a couple times to realize that i was being robbed by 'creating my own salad' because i would get less add-ins for more money then if i just started with one of the signature salads on the menu and adjusted it to my liking. (the southwest is 8.95, but if you recreate it as a 'make your own' because you dont like two ingredients and so you sub in 2 other ones -- the make your own salad is 9.75 for the same number of ingredients.) still wanting to like this place, i continued to go back a few more times. my salads were often "wet" and soggy...and trying the 'light on the dressing' wasnt working because the ingredients themselves were soggy. take a peek at the bowls/utensils they use -- they must come like straight out of a dishwasher because they're always wet when they start. gross. it also annoys me that, again as other reviews have noted, they seem to be always be out of a lot of ingredients on their menu. and the answer when i ask is always "it's out of season". welp, B&S, you aren't a farmers market. you market "high end gourmet selections". let's keep the veggies on your menu in stock, shall we? and my last gripe? the girl with the short black hair that seems to always be there is nothing short of miserable. when you ask about said ingredients, she's annoyed that you express disappointed for not having the ingredients, she doesn't like to be asked to chop your salad a little more (because um, who cant fit the 3inch chunks of chicken in your mouth out of a salad), and if you don't hear her yell "next!" from other salad makers down, she rolls her eyes. um, we can see you. easy lady, if you don't like customer service, find a new job. i'm over it. B&S may have won the new-fresh-salad-craze battle, but they'll lose the war.

I will never go here again. Granted, I stopped in on a storm day, so it wouldn't have been 100% anyway. However, the only thing on the menu that was available (10:00am) was bagel and cream cheese. I ordered, and they couldn't even give me the cream cheese I wanted because the delivery guy had messed up. They were very nice, I must say, but I won't ever refer colleagues or return again.

Two stars cause the chop salads are good, but only two stars cause the service is HORRENDOUS! They are always out of an ingredient, I ordered online and when I arrived 15 min later it was not ready... Nobody had even seen it come thru and they didnt care. It's a bunch of meatheads chopping salads loudly and rushing you. overpriced, bad service but decent food...

Overpriced. The salads are good but the service is lacking. I did an online order today and they left out two ingredients which I paid extra for and there was so little avocado(which of course is extra) that at first I thought they left it out as well. I called up and they credited me the $2.00 for the ingredients they left out but eh I've had better salad and better service for the $10 my custom salad came to. Next time I'll walk the extra five minutes down to Sebastians.

A welcome change. Fresh, delicious, nice staff and owners. And this place will only get better as it just opened.

Bailey & Sage is a great salad place. And the sandwiches look delicious as well. They have a large variety of fresh ingredients including the grilled chicken and steak which is far better than what you get at Sebastian's or Cosi's salad bar. But you pay for the higher quality. I ordered a Waldorf salad with grilled chicken which cost $11.50 (includes tax) and it didn't come with bread or pita. I definitely look forward to going back. But I won't be able to eat there as often as I'd like to because it's just too expensive. I also wish they had more low fat salad dressings.
