We found this place on Yelp while working our way to the airport at the end of our trip. I wish we had found it on the way in. The reviews about this place are spot on and it would be hard to say anything that would top them. A definite must visit on any trip to of from the Big Easy.

Spent $23 on two Po Boys. Oyster and Shrimp, 12". They were skimpy, bland and the oysters were full of GRIT. I wouldn't recommend it.

This was my first experience tasting a real Louisiana Po'boy. Actually, this was my first experience with any kind of po'boy. All I knew about them was that they were native to New Orleans and that people kind of love 'em. That's usually enough to persuade me. My tummy doesn't require much in the way of explanation. So, as a virgin po'boyer, my overall impression was: meh. It was pretty good. I guess I was expecting some orgasmic sensation on my taste buds but basically it comes down to some pretty decent seafood shoved into some good bread.... and that's about it. Some of you may be thinking that this is elementary, but for a newb, my expectations didn't match reality. So if I am to assume that this is generally the normal makeup of a po'boy, and this is what you are wanting to buy, then you're in luck because Short Stop has good ingredients in nice warm bread. I did feel a bit deceived by the name po'boy because no poor kid I know would be buying an $11 sandwich but I suppose if you are a middle-class boy than this would hit the spot. I do want to note that the chips they carry, Zapp's or something like that, are fan-freaking-tastic!

Another on a list of recommendations on my visit to New Orleans, Short Stop did not disappoint. Located on a corner pretty much within a neighborhood, I can see how this location is ideal for the residents there. Pretty simple process of lining up to order, pick up your chips and drink, and paying. The food options are all listed on a big board above the kitchen area and it's all pretty self explanatory, with the pricing being pretty decent for what you get. The roast beef was pretty darn great, with that tasty gravy on it all. Tender, succulent, and just right with flavor and seasoning. Wow. I was pleasantly surprised. Bread left a bit to be desired, as well as the prepackaged lettuce, but the sandwich was solid. Tons of mayo on it, but I guess that's just how they do it here. The oysters were surprisingly tasty, just the right amount of batter and crispness when fried. It's so comical that the oysters here were just so much better than the ones I received at Commanders Palace the night before that it just makes me even more disappointed with my experience there. No doubt that I'm coming back on my next visit to New Orleans.

First of all, when you show up between the hours of 11:00 and 1:00 on any given day you might see a line snaking its way from the counter to the back door, you may get a little daunted. Don't leave. The line moves quick and the sandwiches are worth it. Honestly, the only thing I've ever had here is the king-sized roast beef, but in my opinion, it's the best roast beef in the greater New Orleans area. It's about a block or two off airline on transcontinental. Parking's a mother fucker, Brah.

Short Stop gets my vote for best po boys in Metairie. My all time favorite are Parkway po boys, but if we're only talking about Metairie, then this is my go-to place. They are reasonably priced and consistent. My boyfriend likes their BBQ beef po boy best. I like it as well. Sometimes I order their Italian Sausage po boy instead. They've recently started serving sweet potato fries as well, yay! Sometimes we like to get the peanut butter pie for dessert. Be warned that this is a popular place and can get very crowded. The lines inside can be a little confusing. I find it easiest to avoid the inside altogether by calling in my order and picking it up in the drive thru.

I really liked this place and it appears that the locals like it as well. It just doesn't get any more simple than this. Order your poboy, receive it wrapped in butcher paper, grab your drinks/chips, pay... Sit down, nom nom nom.. Good!

YUM! I love me some po boy's. The groom raves about this place, and it was one that he grew up on. to be continued.

Their poboys are ok, and the people working there are either very friendly or borderline rude. My wife and i were trying to decide where to eat, it was kinda late around 8:30 and i started craving a Roast Beef Poboy. My wife got really excited and said Oh snap we are near Short Stop Poboys lets go there. So we get there and as i pull into the parking lot i notice the only seating is booth style. I am a big guy and can't fit in the small booths, so i knew i would be not eating inside. When we walked in, nobody acknowledged us we seen the sign to wait and we did after 10 mins of nobody saying a word to i went up and asked them where do i place the order the lady pointed to the sign that stated to wait. Finally a Nice young guy took our order we got a Fish & Shrimp combo and a Roast beef. Walked up to the lady ringing up everyone, she wasn't so nice. I asked her do we pay before our order was complete or pay when we are called. She snapped and said did i call you then no you wait. While waiting for our food we could here some of the orders had gotten mixed up, not sure if someone grabbed the wrong one or they labeled it wrong. We got our poboys and went outside to my truck to eat our food. The fish poboy was good but barely any fish on it so i got a little annoyed, the shrimp was good and could have use a little more shrimp. Our rost beef poboys were ok nothing special, the bread was mush and the roast was ok, i know roast beef poboys are supposed to be messy or drip with gravy but the bread soaked every drop and turned into mush. I took a few bites and brought home where i took the meat off and put on fresh bread. If i was around the corner i would try them again but i wont drive out of my way.

Uneventful poboy. Ordered a shrimp- the bread was stale, best part of a poboy is the bread, and it was old. So we went back to the counter for fresh bread and were met with utter rudeness. There are so many better places to go for a better sandwich, and nicer people. Don't waste your time here.

I've stopped by here a few times on my way home in the morning, and haven't been that impressed. It may be on account of getting there in the first half-hour that they're open, and I should try ordering something cold like ham and cheese instead of a meatball poboy.

    (3)
  • Scott H.

Roast beef isn't the only po-boy ya know? I've had the shrimp, catfish, hot sausage and ham & cheese po-boys here in the past. All good. Try a stuffed artichoke if they have them available. And don't forget to grab a Barq's to go with your sandwich followed by a slice of lemon pie for dessert. Service is usually pretty good here. The po-boys are reasonably priced for the sizes available.

Hard to beat the prices in this place. Plus the poboys are fantastic!

Average to slightly below average. I do like that they store their French bread out in the open, which keeps it crisp on the outside. However, they "pre-dress" the bread with lettuce and tomatoes which causes some sogginess. The chicken and sausage gumbo is not the best I've ever had. It was slightly watery and greasy, with a green tint; probably because they use too much filé. Not sure, but they might also use their gumbo as a waste product by dumping in leftover pieces of chicken and sausage. Something about it that I didn't care for. The French fries are basic shoestrings. I don't think they salt them. Nothing special. All of the signage/menu board is overwhelming and confusing. Way too many signs around the menu board. My hamburger was pre-cooked, cold and dry. Service is average. Dirty napkin holders on the tables. No caps on hot sauce bottles on the tables and dried up sauce around the tops. Dirty salt and pepper shakers. They charge 25¢ for fountain drink refills.

You go to NOLA, you are going to come here for a po-boy. You're not going to come here and worry about calories, fat, cholesterol or any of that stuff. You are going to come here and indulge on a sandwich that you'll want to inhale the moment you take a bite out of it. Roast beef po-boy with a Boylan's soda (creme or birch I recommend) and share some fries with your friend. You'll leave Short Stop feeling full and satisfied all while mentally planning your next visit.

I believe Short Stop is hugely overrated. Bear's , although more expensive, has much better quality food & much better tasting food. I've always believed that you get what you pay for. Also, Short Stop has always had cleanliness issues. . .let's just leave it at that!

It is THE place to get roast beef poboys. Everything else is good, but not my favorite. They have gumbo only on Fridays and its great! It's a good place to go for lunch to be in and out. They get really busy but they work fast.

  • Scott G.

Went here with my FIL. I loved the atmosphere and didn't mind waiting in line. The line moved fast and they had Barq's fountain style. We got our roast beef poboys and Zapps Voodoo chips. The poboys were messy, which for RB comes with the territory. However, there is a line where the poboy becomes too messy. The SS poboy crossed that line for me. Don't get me wrong, it tasted great, but if I had not eaten it there I would have been eating it all with a fork. It's definitely in the upper echelon of top poboy places in town, just plan on eating the RB there.

We stopped in for a late lunch, but that was alright as it meant there was room to park in their lot. We walked in and after a short wait was able to place our order at the sandwich counter. My wife wanted the fried catfish poboy and and I ordered the BBQ sausage poboy. The wait was a little longer than I expected, but that was because they started frying the fish after we ordered it. There was plenty of fish for the sandwich. My sausage poboy was packed with meat. Although it turned out it was what I ordered, it was mixed sausage with no BBQ sauce. Oh, well... In spite of that, it was definitely a meal by itself. Not much ambiance, the place is all about the sandwiches.

I finally popped my Poboy cherry at the Poboy festival. However, this was the nerve-wracking 2nd performance. This time, I had nobody to gently guide me through the process. I had to make sure I lived up to the expectations, and that I knew what I was doing (or at least could put on a good show). I chose the location for this 2nd act - Short Stop. I heard that it was good for others that had tried it. I went with the Roast Beef. This was a little messy, but often times messy equates to a fantastic time. And it was..... fantastic. Don't worry, I did use protection. I was given a handful of napkins, and put them to good use. There were the usual nerves involved. The order-taker/Poboy maker looked at me as if I should know what I was doing. I performed amazingly. I ordered the regular roast beef. He asked if I wanted it dressed. I jokingly responded "almost dressed - no mayo," as if I had done it a million times before. Fabulous. Everyone involved was a little quiet, but friendly, and I suppose that's all that matters. The end result was definitely worth returning for.. many, many times, over and over again.

The roast beef worth driving many miles! Do not forget the chicken and sausage gumbo, I buy it for the Holidays by the gallon. Every out of town guest I have gets a trip here and is NEVER disappointed!

There are two tipping points that enabled me to bless the suburb of poboys w/ a Four Star rating. Note: this review is based on three poboys in 2012 (even though I have eaten here several times in my youth, which is my pre-yelp days). 1. Hot Sausage -- This is probably them most average hot sausage pattie poboy I ever had in the south. There is definitely spice but the overall flavor and hotness, both in temperature and flavor, was very par. Not bad but no yowzer factor. PAR. 2. Roast beef -- Do note that I am not a fan of this sandwich b.c like everywhere else, it is a sloppy and flavor-needing sandwich that never inundate my taste buds. PAR. 3. Catfish -- Simply put, Impressive. Definitely a five-r right here despite my transgressions. Why? Their bread is tough. I very much dislike tough bread on any poboy (here and around the city) with the exception of the Roast beef b/c that thing is bleeding gravy. But generally speaking, tough bread means frownie face for the joint. Secondly, the batter for the fish didn't have a nice crunch to it, but despite that, the egg wash batter coupled with the freshness and softness of the fish made for a most delectable combo that if hobbit elves could dance on my taste buds, the Short Stop catfish achieved its goal. Overall, despite the weakness of the bread, semi-soggy crinkle cut sweet potato fries (which I didn't mention), and a weak hot sausage pattie poboy, the FACT that for the size of its poboys w/ its price point AND the catfish being that divine, I had to give Short Stop a round house kick it to a Four. Point? Definitely not the best poboy in town but for the price and for the fish, it grazed the threshold of "I'm a fan." Four-banger.

Not much that hasn't already been said here, but I'm gonna say it anyway: Short Stop is one of those old Metairie institutions. It's been around since before I was born, and will probably still be here long after I'm gone. There's no frills here -- you feel like you've walked back in time and into a small grocery store meat counter rather than a restaurant, except for the smattering of tables. I've eaten here more times than I count, and the food has always been delicious. Though arguably, I've only ever gotten a couple of things here anyway. Find what you love and stick with it, and what I love is their roast beef (though the gumbo's not too shabby either). While I can definitely appreciate (and also have big love for) the thick slices of meat and rich thick gravy of roast beef elsewhere, the debris and thin gravy here at Short Stop definitely deserves it's own seat in the Po-Boy Hall of Fame. It's the perfect compliment to that crusty delicious french bread, and it's a testament to the bread that it doesn't completely fall apart on you by the time you're done eating. The napkin dispensers on the table will be your biggest friend, because you WILL be getting messy. Embrace the mess, sop up those drips, savor that roast beef, and make ya momma proud by cleaning up the crumbs on your table when you're done.

Old school place. Can have a wait so be prepared. Best roast beef poboy around. The king size is huge and a great value. Big enough for a family of three to share! Their shrimp poboy is mediocre but order some roast debris beef gravy to pour on it and you have a winner. My new favorite however is the fried oyster poboy with the roast beef gravy. AMAZING! French fries are just french fries and the refills on fountain drinks are not free but it's worth going just for the fall apart roast beef & gravy! It's a thin gravy The beef had a fall apart different texture sort of like very small pieces not shredded though. If you like big thick slices of roast beef with thick gravy you won't like this but I prefer this type of poboy. Give it a try.

Short Stop Po-Boys has got it goin' on! Reasonable prices for a wide selection of tasty sandwiches and more. The food was fresh and tasty, and service was prompt. It wasn't too busy when we were there, but you could tell they have a system down for when the crowds descend. I opted for the catfish, dressed, which was crispy and light, not greasy. It took an extra few minutes to cook, but was well worth the wait. The bf chose hot sausage links, which got a rave review. I wish he would have chosen the roast beef though, after reading the Yelps. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just as it should be. Barq's in a bottle was a nice touch as well.

Short Stop has all he trimmings of a great, under the radar Po-Boy shop. It's located deep in the suburb of Metairie in an area that a New Orleans tourist would hardly just wander into. The locals swear by it and it's always crowded. It has been an institution in the neighborhood for almost fifty years. However, the reality is that the food is not worth the drive out to Metairie and probably not worth it even if you're already out there. The ordering process is odd to say the least. You walk up to the counter to place your food order, then you have to stand around close to the counter until your sandwiches are made and the person who took your order makes eye contact with you and waves you over. It's kind of like a crowded grocery deli counter where nobody's sure who's in line, who already ordered and who's next in line. You then have to grab your sandwiches, without the help of a tray mind you, and head over to a second counter to pay for your sandwiches and pickup your drink. This isn't a big deal if you just have one sandwich, but if you have a few of them and some sides, it could quickly become a problem. This whole process seems completely backwards. Take my full order; give me my drinks and a receipt with a number on it. Then, call out the number when the sandwiches are ready and let me pick the food up on a tray. Even every other fast food place has figured this out, but Short Stop must still be learning. I was able to sample the roast beef, the shrimp and the catfish. The fried shrimp was awful. All of the shrimp were tiny and definitely not from Louisiana. They also had a tough grainy batter like "popcorn shrimp" from a chain restaurant. This kind of shrimp might be acceptable at a Long John Silvers in Ohio, but it is unforgivable to have something like this on a Po-Boy in south Louisiana. The roast beef and catfish were better. The roast was finely shredded and had a good flavor, but it was pretty salty. For me, it was borderline too salty, but for someone else it might be just fine. R&Os does a much better version of this type of roast beef. Something else that I didn't like about the roast beef was that the bread was completely soggy with gravy, while the meat tasted very dry. How they managed that, I'll never know. Every sandwich we ordered had stiff, stale bread. I noticed that behind the counter there was a huge shelf of pre cut bread and even "pre-dressed" bread. This might work well from a mass production standpoint, but freshness is compromised big time. Although, it might not matter if you're ordering is the roast beef because the bread will be a soggy mess anyway. Pass on this place. There are better Po-Boys at gas stations out there in Metairie.

Best roast beef poboy I've ever had and I've had my share of poboys. The beef is shredded and seasoned to perfection! The atmosphere reminds me of those fun burger joints you went to as a kid after sports games with your friends. Which is a positive in my book. The food came out fast and the staff was friendly.

Every time I order a roast beef here, which has been many times over the course of seven years, I ask for gravy. Not one time in seven years have I gotten gravy. Just a stale in some places, mushy from I'm not sure what in other places, tired and flakey roast beef sandwich. Not that great. My family frequently orders from this place, so I've had enough time to fairly judge. The service is great, kind employees but jeez, all I ever wanted was gravy! LOL thus this place will never be my first stop.

We were driving around in the rain after a Plantation tour and decided to check out Yelp for a good Po Boy. Up pops Short Stop, so I enter the address in the navi and off we go. The storefront was very unassuming, but it was packed with locals. The girl who took our order had quite the personality, pretty sarcastic but funny. Well the g/f goes for the catfish po boy. I order the roast beef and fried chicken fingers. The sandwich was over a foot long and stuffed. It was huge, dripping in au jus and chopped roast beef. That catfish POBoys was crispy, not oily. I added an order of fries for good measure and washed it all down with a iced tea. Perfect lunch, before I gorge myself at dinner. I'm giving it 4 stars but the g/f (also known as the sandwich nut) says 5 stars all the way.

This is one of those po-boy places near my mother's house that rarely disappoints when it comes to their po-boys. They give you plenty of those nice big ol' shrimps on a nice big ol' po-boy. Onion rings are a little on the too greesy side though and don't have that I don't even know how to put it without comparing them to Come Back Inn's onion rings so I'll say this: They're not Come back Inn's onion rings. Another very nice feature is their drive-through pick-up window. Very convenient because this place is packed around lunch and I like to order ahead. Inside orders are taken at one counter and picked up at another with the dining area toward the front of the restaurant. In my experience the lines can get a little convoluted when it's busy. Overall this place is good, I'd maybe do 3.5 stars since the onion rings are kind of meh to me, but can produce a solid 4 stars on the po-boy alone.

this is a must stop for po-boys. ordered 3 different ones to taste: oyster po-boy, crawfish po-boy and the roast beef po-boy. all were very good. oyster po-boys are my favorite so I have a preference to that sandwich, but I hear that this place is actually known for their roast beef sandwich.

My best friend and I were craving poboys and somewhere in metairie. Did not know this place was so close but their roast beef was delicious!! The beef was soft and so fresh! The bread was very soft to, which always worries me about hard bread. Definitely a plus!

One of my favorite po-boy places in the whole city. Short Stop is not a fancy place, but po-boy's aren't haute cuisine after-all (unless your from NOLA like me). The baguettes are fresh and crispy on the outside and they never stint you on meat, whatever kind you get. The roast beef is delicious and sloppy, just like it should be. My actual first choice here is the smoked sausage po-boy, dressed. You can get BBQed sausage, but honestly, it's much better without the sauce. Great oysters, soft shell crab, and shrimp. Really, anything you can think of, they put it on a po-boy here. All the sides are tasty as hell too. Over the years, I must've eaten a million po-boys from Short Stop and loved every last one!! When it comes to NOLA food, my stomach is like a mother's heart. No matter how full it is, there's always room for one more.

Great lunch spot with the sweetest staff! While out for a drive with my mom running errands, we stopped in for one of their poboys. I had the roast beef which was delicious. A little more gravy on it would have given this 5-stars, but I would absolutely suggest this place for a quick lunch. Real New Orleans reality baby.

We all had the roast beef and it was excellent, but oh my the regular was huge! No human should consume that much food, even the guys in the party said it was too much. I can only imagine the king sized! Long lines of locals, you know it is good. Order the small or share the regular with someone :)

A solid NOLA po boy shop. If you like yours sloppy, a good 25 napkin po-boy, Short Stop is where it's at. At 7.99 for a 13 incher it's one of the best deals in town too. I sometimes think it's better than Parkway even though the scenery's not as nice. Prices are 20% cheaper almost across the board compared to Parkway and if you eat 12 of em your 13th's free.

Can't go wrong no matter what you order. Best sandwiches in Metairie. Excellent food and you get your money's worth. My niece comes from Atlanta and can't wait to get to there for her Po Boy. She used to go in the quarter for one until I figured out she was going for roast beef Po boy at one place. I changed that fast after going to short stop. Loves the quarter though.

Very good Po-boys...I was not disappointed at all...LOVED the roast beef...the messier the better. If you are in the area...by all means drop in. Try to go for a late lunch/ early dinner, this place is usually packed at lunch time. There is also a pick up window for the lazy people...just call ahead :)

Awesome local po-boys, deli, and conversation. There are always local trucks and customers, making for a full parking lot; an excellent sign of a great location. Shrimp, oyster, and crawfish po-boys (dressed, w/ Crystal's sauce), Zapp's chips, Barq's, and a Hubig's pie for desert; you can't go wrong!

Russell's Short Stop is right at the intersection of Transcontinental Drive and Airline Drive and it gets very crowded at lunch. The biggest problems here are just the sheer popularity of the place as it gets so packed and the lack of any good atmosphere. The ambiance inside seems more like a fast food restaurant than anything else and everything involves standing in line to order at the counters. This place is all about the po boys and lines are already forming by around 11:00am. This seems to be the go-to place for po boys in this area and they also do a decent gumbo (seafood only available on Fridays). I first ended up here as one of my friends told me it was the ONLY place she would eat a roast beef po boy from. I certainly don't think the roast beef here comes anywhere close to the BEST roast beef po boy I've ever had but it is a good one and the other things I've sampled here have also been good.

Very reasonably priced good po-boys. They have a ton of choices, the shrimp is especially good, although I do prefer Crabby Jacks for Po-Boys myself.

Short Stop's po' boys menu is extensive. So why do I always get the same thing? Ain't broken, that's why! (you're supposed to put in a low, phlegmy, coughy laugh about there, just like most of the patrons do if they think they've said something funny). Shrimp po' boy, Hubig Pie, Zapps Chips and an Arnold Palmer . . I'm all set! It's busy, and fun, if the local shool just let out as it's always comical to hear the kids talk about what's right and wrong with the world, who's dating whom and what is going on at school.

I've had Po-boys all over New Orleans and this is my very favorite! We tried Domilise's last time we were in town and the whole time we were wishing we'd gone to Short Stop instead. The prices are insanely cheap, and the bread and fillings are all perfection. My mom and I always get 1 fried shrimp and 1 fried oyster and split them - dressed, no mayo ! I hate chewy slimy oysters on a sandwich, and the ones here are always crisp and delicious. The staff is a little rough, but this place is real. I have been searching many years for a better Po-boy and have yet to find one!!

One of the best in the city, in Metairie though. Roast beef is so good covered with tons of gravy on fresh french bread. Grab a bag of zaps and your set. Not quick, so be patient it's worth it.

I've been going here since I was a child in the 60's back when it was a little store with a sandwich counter in the back. Grandma lived over on Radiance and I'd walk over with a cousin or my grandfather and pick up a couple of roast beefs just about every time we visited. The urge to merge with a king oyster's been with me for about a month now so somehow I wound up here. Haven't been for a while since I'm across the country but take it from me, you need not look any further. I'd bet every less than stellar or negative review on this page is written by a competitor. In a town of sandwich joints it's hard to justify a "best" rating but it's hard not to consider it for these guys. Here's a tip....hot sausage patty, dressed. You'll thank me later.

This is the first roast beef po-boy I had as a child and it's still my favorite. If you like the debris style roast beef then order this one extra sloppy.

Straightforward po-boy shop cooking up some great roast beef po-boys. This place gets crowded but food comes out super quick.

Anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars is either crazy or on drugs! Visiting my sister for a week and I've eaten poboys but NONE compared to my crawfish poboy here. Poboys and Barq's Red Cream Soda, nothing better than that. I want this to be my last meal before I die.

Went today for lunch. Had a catfish poboy. Fish was mushy like it had been sitting around for awhile. My wife had a shrimp poboy. The breading on the shrimp was falling off. Fries and onion rings were good. It wasn't like it was absolutely terrible, I just expect more from a place like this. And don't ask them to make a half catfish, half shrimp poboy. First they look at you like you are a moron, then they tell you they don't do that. I guess they can't grasp the idea that someone might want to eat a little of each. I would have even paid extra, but I wasn't even given the option. I've been here before and it was really good. Maybe it was just a bad day.

The best roast beef poboy in Metairie (and I only say that to keep the Parasols fans at bay...LOL)!!! I've eaten here many, many times and I'm never, ever disappointed. The roast beefs are dripping, messy and just too delicious for words. The shrimps are tasty, seasoned perfectly and overflowing (you'll find yourself eating the extra shrimp first, then your poboy)! The catfish is always hot, juicy and crisp where it counts! Wash all of it down with a cool, crisp Barq's and..... I'm in heaven!!!!

This roast beef poboy rivals Parasols. I can't tell which is better and it would be hard to tell which is better because a side by side comparison wouldn't be possible for me since i consume these in 300 seconds or less and they are several miles and red light apart. Warning: I rarely eat roast beef poboys other than at Short Stop or Parasols because I'm tired of being disgusted (st charles tavern for example). Use this rule of thumb: If you want a roast beef poboy, go to short stop if you're in metairie, parasols if you're in new orleans. Wait I also need to say that last time i attempted to go here the line was outside the door on a saturday. Last time I tried to go Parasols on a Saturday there was no line.

1st real PoBoy since 2006 and Short Stop was one of my stops while in town. So good back then and now it seems even better than I remember. Had the oyster poboy, wifey got the bbq beef and my son got the hot link sausage. Along with a couple of bags of zapps and barqs by the bottle and we were in heaven. Gonna go back and have a couple for the flight back to Cal. You really can't go wrong here and their prices are good. It can get busy but they move the line quickly. Plenty of parking and if it the lot is full, street parking is available too. They also have a drive-thru if you're in a hurry or you can call in your order and pick it up inside at the phone order register.

Not that great... Based on the reviews I saw here, I decided to give it a try. I was very disappointed. The shrimp were overly cooked and very dry and the roast beef was more like roasted mush. It was edible but I'd never go back. Qwick Check po boys are still the best in Metairie. Do yourself a favor go there instead of short stop, its only about 2 miles away.

Best po'boy in the country! I live 1500 miles from there now, and still crave short stop on a weekly basis.... Can't wait to get back home for a roast beef with extra pickles, or a shimp po'boy... Yummmmmm

Goooooood po-boys and cheap. The hot roast beef was good, sister had the shrimp and she LOVED it and the chicken fingers satisfied my husband. Topped it off with a few bags of Zapps and ahhh....a great Saturday lunch.

In my household, a common lament from my mother is the dearth of a good roast beef po'boy. Too many cut corners, use pressed beef instead of real, canned gravy, and she'll have none of that wine-braised shit. Enter Short Stop. We drove by running errands, and I mentioned how many cars were in the parking lot. I said it can't be all bad, so we pull in. Mama was still skittish: the lines are too long, what if it's awful, ask if they cook a real roast, are we eating it here? THANK GOD her fears were assuaged! She ate a moist, flavorful roast beef po' boy just like 2004. They have a stuffed crab that's pretty decent, too.

Second time wrong gets a not so good review. My advice to you is if you call in an order and there laughing and playing going on; hang up and call back, because they surely will not get your order right.

Went there through the week with friends they had the shrimp and it was ok I ordered the burger and wanted it medium and was told they cook all their burgers in the morning and rewarm them so I ate fries only, nothing fancy but ok for a quick bite. With all the burger places you would think they would stay in the game use real meat not soybean n meat combo patties.Cooking them to order would be a plus!

As a kid I grew up around the corner from this place. When Winn-Dixie, Ramsey's, and the Music Box were in the same strip mall. Brown & orange migrated to a new building at the opposite end of Transcontinental. They have "real roast" beef. I would argue for "liuzza's by the track" if given an ultimatum, but the shrimp is good & I get it occasionally. I love oyster here until I cracked my tooth in half on a piece of shell here. I sent a message to the owner, and it "was all my fault". Yes, I filled out an accident report--and I had to go to a $$$$ dentist because it was a front canine that had to be crowned. The staff here is friendly and I didn't leave the message to warn of pending legal--it was "you should know this for the supplier that gets the next guy..." But I got return messaged like I was Morris Bart! So now I just stick to the shrimp, soft shell crab, and roast beef. I think about some careless mother shucker every time I see that one tooth that's a shade off if I bleach my teeth on occasion. It's like a Louisiana battle scar, or a bad tattoo. It is one of the better local places, kinda like Bobby's by Bonnabel or Guillory's by Cleary. Real and authentic hidden gems that truly represent the heart of this city...

We were very excited to find this hole in the wall, thanks to Yelp and my fellow yelpers. This place is famous for their roast beef Po boy, but we went for the king size shrimp Po boy. We truly enjoyed our HUMONGOUS sandwich. The shrimp is fresh and perfectly fried. It is also not heavily breaded and the shrimp still has a snap to it. The seasoning is there, but it didn't overwhelm the delicateness of the shrimp. The sandwich has freshly sliced crispy lettuce and some mayo on it - simple but awesome, We also ordered jambalaya rice - YAS A small coleslaw that came in a very small portion - YAS. There are plenty of seat and it's definitely a local hang out. We r very pleased. Highly recommend.

Grab a king-size roast beef po-boy to split with a friend--and lots of napkins! I enjoyed the RB in that it was different from most other places. The meat seemed to be shredded instead of in pieces, and it's served with TONS of gravy. Good, worth the price, but definitely not the best ever. On my last trip, I got the shrimp and, well, I should've stuck with the RB. Or tried the hot sausage. Whatever they put on the shrimp a) was not terribly tasty b) did not stick to the shrimp very well Just forgettable. And slightly regrettable. Service has always been brisk and friendly, considering how crowded this place gets.

Guys lemme tell youse about a place down in little old Metairie, LA. As we call it in Louisiana, MET TREE. Guys, I'm going to tell you about the best Po-Boy place that's still around. THE SHORT STOP Guys, growing up I ate po boys and crawfish. As the years went by, after that bizznitch Katrina, and the dumbass BP oil disaster which obliterated the fishing industry ...it was tremendously hard to find a great po boy, much less good seafood, for a decent price. I'll always pay for locals which is something I encourage you viewing Yelpers to do if your in and around southeast LA. However, good seafood and po boys are still hard to find for a decent price. The Short Stop is the friggin way to go. All the locals order the roast beef Po-Boy...you can't go wrong with that. My favorite is the King size oyster po boy. For out of state Yelpers let me explain: There's basically a 6", 9", and 14" 14 inch is a KING SIZE Beat that Subway, you little trout sniffer... That's friggin legit guys. Just look at the photos. A oversize huge po boy is 17 bucks. That's for oysters and fully dressed. And believe me oysters are expensive regardless. Serve this kind of sandwich in Texas, it'll be 30 bucks. How bout in California? 100 bucks. I bought po boys for the family and it only cost me 70 bucks for 6 people. That's a good deal. All I can say is, I make 3 stops when in in LA: 1. Home 2. Drive through Daquiris, Margaritas, Hand Grenades, and Beer. 3. THE SHORT STOP Guys, if you only give one po boy place a try, let these wonderful people serve you some incredible food. These are the same people that will serve it up with a smile and a "How's ya mama?" In the end, that's what LA is about, fantastic food and a great time. Cheers folks. Check out the pics.

I went to this place during my vacation to New Orleans, LA. I had a poboy from a restaurant in the French Quarter but the poboy here was so much more delicious. Plus they were bigger and decently priced. I am so glad we decided to try this place.

Stopped in while on a business trip in NOLA, I'm so glad I did! Ordered the roast beef poorboy (dressed) and a side of jambalaya. The poorboy was the best I've had and I travel this area a lot. The jambalaya was near the top of the list as well. Get here early for lunch the line gets long!

My hubby could live and die in this place. He swears by the messy roast beef poboys loaded. I myself usually get the liver cheese. I'm not a huge poboy fan but this place is a winner for the locals who will stand in a long line at lunchtime.

Im raised in Metry Babe', I've had a poboy at almost every popular poboy joint in NOLA and NO ONE, I mean absolutely NOBODY does a roast beef poboy like Russell Short Stop. I've been eating here since I was a kid and I believe that they invented the perfect way to cook roast beef, the best roast beef poboy you will ever have in your life is rite here at Russell Short Stop

  • Josh M.

Quick and delicious! No complaints from me! Not sure why other reviewers found this spot complicated, but you walk in and order, receive your food and pay. Had the oyster and shrimp poboys, and really wanted to take a roast beef to go for my ride back to Houston, but their regular size had me stuffed. Reason to return I suppose!

  • Alex R.

This place was recommended by one of my wife's coworkers who grew up in Metairie so we decided to give it a try! You walk in and order right at the counter where they make the food, then once they hand you the food you proceed to the register to pay and then seat yourself or take it to-go (place is designed for a lunch rush). I had the Roast Beef Po Boy because its not only the first thing on the menu but several people ahead of us in line ordered it so I knew it had to be good... it did not disappoint! My wife had the Oyster Po Boy which was a lot better than average. We also shared a side of the Jambalaya (which was good but didn't taste too freshly made) and a order of French fries (they reminded me of McDonald's fries which we had to wait an extra 5 minutes for). Overall a good solid meal for under $30! We will be back...

My boss said I'm going to NOLA.. the first thing I thought was "PO BOY! PO BOY! PO BOYYYYYY!" This chant really happened in my head! LOL I've heard so much about the famous po boy, and I've even attempted to make it.. but how do you make something in what you envision it will taste like, instead of based on what it actually tasted like?! We ordered the shrimp po boy, the roast beef po boy, and the stuffed artichoke. Shrimp Po Boy: OMG so... much.. shrimp..! Big pieces of meaty shrimp all crammed into this light and fluffy bun with just a crunch to the crust, dressed with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and mayo (which tasted tangier). This was out of the world.. if anything I would have liked more dressing to it.. it tasted like a vinaigrette.. and it was divine! Roast Beef Po Boy: Layers of roast beef on a toasted bun drenched in it's own gravy and also with all the fixins as above.. I liked it, but not as much as the shrimp! Stuffed artichoke: lots of garlic, and bread crumbs.. I didn't love it.. in fact, I was over it... Do all po boys taste like this place?! If so, I'm so excited for my future NOLA trips. But overall, this casual, affordable place, has some great po boys and I will try to make it back soon!

Artistry. It's been years since I have had a po boy. Ancipitation has been growing to a level of nearly unrealistic expectations for the depth of enjoyment I had fantasized feeling upon reuniting with my long lost beloved. I am happy to say, it did not dissapoint. I dipped that messy goodness all up in that gumbo, and all was bliss.

Poboys in this city are always a matter of opinion. Once you've found your favorite, most are pretty hard pressed to admit to enjoying one somewhere else. I grew up eating at Russell's Short Stop. While I do enjoy poboys at other restaurants, this is probably my favorite poboy shop. If you're not sure what to order, always go with the hot roast beef. They don't use thick slices of roast beef with brown gravy. They use a sort of roast beef debris. Shredded thin slices of beef cooked down in a thinner gravy. It is completely messy and delicious. The shrimp poboy is also a favorite of mine. While the pieces of shrimp are not jumbo, they aren't tiny. And they have never tasted poorly. The only complaint I have with this sandwich is, on a few occasions they have been a little skimpy with the amount of shrimp. I always get my poboys fully dressed with extra mayo. For some reason Short Stop doesn't dress their sandwiches with pickles. I only miss them when I get the roast beef. Poboys come in 3 sizes: small, regular, and King. I get a small and am stuffed, my husband gets full on the regular. If you're sharing or are exceptionally hungry, go for the King. For a side, they have one of the best potato salads I've ever had. It's very creamy and they use sweet relish in it. They also have a huge assortment of chips including every kind of Zapps you can think of. They serve fountain drinks as well as a bunch of bottled sodas like cream soda and root beer. And they have domestic beer on tap, which is always a plus. The great thing about this place is they have a pretty extensive menu. There's really something for everyone. They are always busy, especially Friday at lunch. But I've never once had poor service. Also, look in the clipper magazine for the coupon! While it is reasonable priced, who doesn't turn down a discount?

  • Sarah M.

The best for po-boys. Reasonably priced and delicious. They also have a huge selection. Never wait more than ten minutes for your food. The only downfall is that the line is usually pretty long and it's difficult to park because the lot is always full. I think that means it's good though, right?

Delicious! The roast beef is the best! One of the best poor boy places in New Orleans. They have a loyalty program that gives you free sandwiches after awhile. They also do quarter soda refills. We always visit this place several times when we're here.

I was craving a roast beef poor boy and decided to stop here. As usual, the poor boy was excellent. I also had an order of fries along with a drink. Place was empty which was fine with me since I have been here on several occasions during lunchtime. The place is packed making it difficult at this time. I always want to try seething new but difficult to pass up a dressed roast beef. Consistent always!

  • Karrie K.

As a regular at short stop, I am able to say that they are a hidden gem among the poboy nation. The service is always friendly and after a few visits, the servers and cashiers will remember your order. I switch up between the Hot Sausage poboy and the roast beef. The food is consistent and always taste the same. I love short stop! Best poboy in the metairie/New Orleans areas!!

  • James B.

Short Stop, I have to sing your praises. From the moment you walk in the door, it is a memorable occasion. The Po-Boys are beautiful, and all quite tasty. I myself am quite smitten with the French Fry Po-Boy with Debris Gravy, fully Dressed. Man, CHEAP, and HUGE.. Tons of Roast Beef Debris in the Fries, and sloppy, sloppy, sloppy! But, hey, who wants a neat and tidy Po-Boy? Not me, no Sir! You walk up to the counter, order your Po-BBoy, and wait a few minutes until it's ready.. Don't sweat the pre dressed bread, it's rush hour and they go through A LOT! The Roast Beef is also beautiful.. But, in my opinion, and for the price, just get the French Fry Po-Boy with Debris Gravy. Tastes like a Roast Beef, at a fraction of the cost.. See you there..

Awesome po boys and service! I called to place a to go order an hour before closing, thinking I would get the typical Nola rude attitude; however, I was astonished when the lady said "what can I make for you?" I paid with a debit card and they don't allow you to add a tip to the total. I had a few bucks on me and promised I would tip heavy next time.

Did not know it was possible for this place to get any worse, I was brought here with family friends, so I didn't have a choice, got the fried shrimp it was absolutely repulsive tasted like old seafood. This place has managed to go even more downhill since my last visit. Just avoid this place, you can get a better po boy at New orleans seafood and hamburger which is a chain which says a lot.

I really wanted to try Crabby Jacks, but apparently they aren't open after 3pm on weekdays. So I went over to Short Stop. Roast beef po boy wasn't that great. A regular is large and a good deal at $6.15. The onion rings were the right size for the right price! $2.19 for a large which was about 5 medium onion rings. The roast beef was beyond shredded. Tiny particles of beef but was layered on pretty well. The flavor wasn't anything special. Tasted like basic roast. The main issue was the serious lack of gravy. In my opinion, there was no gravy it was Au Jus, not even slightly thickened juices dripped from the sandwich which just made the bread soggy. Which is odd because the meat itself seemed kind of dry. (see pic) The onion rings were very greasy. The batter was basic and lacked any flavor. The place itself is very bright and old. The menu board is very cluttered with pieces of paper (that are difficult to read) hanging below. For example, if you arent reading all those papers, you wouldnt notice that they now have sweet potato fries and that they have gumbo served everyday. Overall, I think ShortStop is OK for a quick poboy, but I wouldn't recommend it.

  • Christopher P.

Fresh bread + weird ordering system + price = deece mcgeese Bread was nice and chewy. Oyster was crispy but used sparingly. Throw some... throw some oysters on that bitch... just bought a Cadillac. You have to wait to get your food in order to pay. Why can't I just get a receipt and pay? Good place to stop by if you're in the area about to watch the team practice. I'll be back.

Everyone seems to review either the seafood poboys or the roast beef poboy. I've had both, and have enjoyed them. But, I'm going to offer a review on another one of their sandwiches, the meatball poboy. I am a connoisseur of meatball poboys/sandwiches/etc. My husband and I eat them frequently and try them at many different places. The meatball poboy at Short Stop is our favorite. The meatballs are great, not too firm, and kind of smoosh down so it's easy to eat. They put exactly the right amount of sauce, so it's not too moist or too dry. Add light mayo (regular mayo is just too much here!) and some American cheese and it just doesn't get any better. Their jambalaya is one of my favorites for a restaurant. They have a brown jambalaya that reminds me of my husband's Mawmaw's jambalaya which is the best I've ever had. Most of the time it's too spicy for me, but if I'm craving jambalaya, this is where I go. And, I love their fries, they're pretty much perfectly cooked and well salted. They're pretty consistent and consistency is worth a lot to me. And Short Stop is consistent on all of my regular foods. My only complaint on the restaurant is that they charge for refills. It's only a quarter, but it's still a nuisance. I'd much rather they just raise the cost of my drink by a quarter and let me have refills. It would make my experience better and that would help make me happier. But, overall, if my only complaint about a restaurant is the refill policy I'm pretty happy! I recommend you try them at least once. Yes, they're a little out of the way, but your stomach will be so happy after the wait!

One of my favorite roast beef po boys in town! Including those so called landmarks in Orleans parish. Swiss cheese and a little hot sauce, and a bunch of napkins...and a Barq's root beer...or Abita root beer. But I don't think they have it. And oyster is pretty good too. Although I am not a fan of the shrimp po boy at all. Use better quality shrimp.

  • Danon H.

What better NOLA tradition is their than ordering a PoBoy. Since their only a mile from where I live I stopped by this eatery today. The people behind the counter were not that friendly. It doesn't really surprise me that much considering that this is a take out restaurant. I will admit that they were pretty quick though. I ordered the shrimp PoBoy and some Jambalaya. The Jambalaya wasn't that great. Basically it was dirty rice with some pork. The PoBoy itself was pretty good, the shrimp I could tell was fresh. They loaded it down with tons of shrimp so I got more bang for my buck. This place is more geared for take out rather than dine in so the atmosphere is not that great. In short the PoBoy's here are pretty good, but not the best I have ever had though.

  • Gabe R.

This could be a 1 word review. Typical. Typical is not necessarily a negative word. This place is the typical New Orleans Po-boy shop. It's what you expect as a local. A good roast beef po boy that requires multiple napkins and is falling apart in a soggy mess before you can finish, an atmosphere that resembles Mel's Diner, and employees that can go from screaming at co-workers to southern hospitality in the same breath. Short Stop is all of that. The roast beef is as good as some of the so called best places in town, the jambalaya instread of fries is really nice option and having 3 different sizes is great too. The small po-boy and a small jambalaya will cost you a mere 7.00 and will fill you up. There are about 20 po-boys on the menu, maybe more with most of the usual fair. There are plenty of tables to sit at but again the atmosphere isn't much. Definitely good enough to go back again.

  • G M.

I wasn't impressed. I ordered a king sized po-boy with catfish and shrimp. The catfish was soggy and cold. The shrimp tasted like frozen fish sticks. Seriously. The similarities in taste are uncanny. The fries were nothing special either.

    (1)
  • WK M.

Had the roast beef as I'd seen it recommended, but it was not up to NOLA standards. The service I've seen low-rated and I can see why, but it's less a bad attitutude as much as despair (?). There is a strong vibe that no one working here is happy, not a good sign. as far as the po boy, I have had much better in NOLA than this.

TERRIBLE customer service! Spoke to me extremely unprofessionally after accidentally charging me twice for my order due to computer glitch. Food was okay, but it definitely was not worth the terrible service and the trouble I had to go through to get my money back. They refused to give me a refund so I had to call my bank to dispute the charge. I will definitely never go back!

Had the roast beef. Yes it was tender and yes the prices are great and yes the portions are huge. But the flavor was not that great. People in Orleans seem to love their roast beef gravy po boys but I've had plenty and have yet to see what the hypes about. It's good , but nothing special. Paesanos in Philly is a real sandwich that stands out above the rest. I'm not hating, just disappointed. 3 stars for the cheap prices and huge portions. Order a small unless you're really really hungry.
