Not so good. Taste of shoe leather is more like it. But the lady was nice. My chicken tacos for $5 were really over cooked carbon sticks. My wife ordered the beef chalupa and she is certain the meat was more of a mystery than anything called beef.

Jerk sauce. Jerk chicken. Jerk shrimp. I could end this review right there but of course I won't. The people need to know what a great little restaurant is hidden away in a little strip mall in Gretna. I've been here twice and although there were months between my visits, the very sweet lady who runs the place remembered me and greeted me so warmly I wanted to hug her. She's very attentive and her husband (the cook?) is just as nice as she is. I have only had one thing here...the jerk chicken and shrimp plate. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and tender and the shrimp are cooked just right. It's served with grilled onions and bell peppers and it is so stinking good. It also comes with the most delicious plantains I've ever had and rice and beans. I'm not a huge fan of the rice and beans but everything else on the plate makes up for that. They also put jerk sauce on everything and they also bring out a little container of it to your table when they serve you. It's unlike any jerk sauce I've ever had. It's packed with flavor and spicy, spicy, spicy. I love me some spicy sauce. A lot. I'm in love with this sauce, y'all. If you like burn your lips off spicy like I do, ask for extra. Trust. Go for the exceptional service. Go for the fantastic food. But most of all, go for that amazing sauce.

What an interesting alternative to New Orleans food. This place is authentic. I love the chicken soup. Amazing spices. Breakfast served all day long. Great Value and a really nice wait staff. I look forward to my second visit!

*THEY NOW ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS* We just enjoyed the beef chimichurri and jerk chicken plates. Both were tasty. Their beef chimichurri: a ground beef patty on a baguette with grilled veggies and slathered heavy with a mayonnaise-based sauce. Their jerk chicken: *not on their menu; highly seasoned pounded chicken breast beside a heaping scoop of rice and black beans, salad and jerk sauce. The salad wasn't much to write home about. Just some iceberg drizzled with ranch. For a hole in the wall, Taste of the Caribbean was very clean. I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I was peeping the corners, bathroom, everywhere. *There are several menu items that are not on the legit menu but instead written on a dry erase board without prices. We asked our waitress about the price of our jerk chicken, but were quoted a price that differed by ~$10 by the person who rang us up. Besides the mixup, our experience was very nice.

This place was really cool. Some really big guys walked in and were speaking straight up French with the owners. I had the fish, shrimp, steak, and chicken tacos. They were ultimate. It is a hidden gem, hidden being the key word. It is in the corner of the strip directly across from mesquite grill. The guys were from out-of-town, and one of the customers spoke his wisdom that the others really enjoyed. "When I came to this country I was in Miami and it just was not for me--high concentrations of wealth separated from extreme poverty. After Katrina he was in Atlanta for six months. He was ready to get home to (the big easy). Here nobody is in a competition with each other.... You can pick your own crew to make friends with and they don't care about your social status......" The husband and wife that run this establishment are absolutely, wonderfully nice and polite. Instead of paying a bill it felt more like I was making a donation to a church. Because they are real Angels. Thanks for the referral !!!

In New Orleans (like the rest of Latin America) we value finding, eating at, and sharing 'holes in the wall'. Taste of the Caribbean falls comfortably into this nook. Delicious food, warm and friendly service and a very clean establishment. First the food. I am Cuban, my wife is Jamaican, and our taste buds are right at home at TOC. Excellent jerk chicken with just the right amount of spice, served with some seriously succulent sauce. They serve a wonderful grilled chicken, with garlic or lemon sauce (they are both tasty and I recommend the lemon). I am drooling as i write these words. We asked whether they have beef patties, they served us patties that rivaled those in Jamaica and easily beat the ones we tried in Miami. My wife was served a fried redfish cooked to perfection with tostones (twice fried plantains) fried to an outside crunch and a great inside flavor. Then there is the coleslaw. I wanted a plate of it, more of it and even took some home. Being a coleslaw fan, I am particular about it- vinegar rather than mayo and a heat that makes one say 'oh' without being overpowering ToC read my mind, mixed it and served it up. As I said, it is a hole in the wall, a space in one of the most diverse strips I've seen anywhere. Bordered by a classic Louisiana Seafood place, a neighborhood bar, an elegant Indian restaurant, a massage center and a good ol' Irish pub; Taste of the Caribbean portals you to a great food cottage/stand that dots our coasts from one corner of the Caribbean to the other. Finally, the name is true to the menu. This is really a taste of the Caribbean. Whether you like Haitian, Jamaican, Cuban or Puerto Rican food, the chef is tuned into what dishes are pan-Caribbean- which ones unite us. Rice and Peas, plantains (whether fried or mashed into mofongo/fufu), marinated beef and pork, tropical fruits and colas, turnovers (whether empanadas or patties), seafood and soups, form a microcosm of islands just off the coast and past the gulf. And ToC gives its patrons a wonderful culinary view.

Excellent food. Authentic creole Haitian cuisine. Also typical haitian menu not everything will be available. The plantains are to die for, the griot fried pork was excellent an the picliz or chow chow was heavenly. Don't be fooled by the location or simple decor. If it is good food you want, worth the drive. Will definitely be back Dr. M.J Theard

This may be my favorite new restaurant. Located in an unassuming strip mall, Taste of the Caribbean makes me feel like I've been transported to the islands. I like it so much that I have eaten here four times in the past two weeks. The service is very friendly. Each time I have been I have been made to feel as if I am part of the owner's close group of friends. They are so nice that I would probably continue to visit even if the food weren't great. Fortunately the food is as good as the service. On each trip I have ordered the jerk chicken plate or the shrimp and jerk chicken. I am here to tell you that this jerk chicken is absolutely amazing. The level of spice is significant so if you are not from the islands or southern Louisiana, you may want to proceed with caution. Besides the amazing chicken, the plate came with fried plantains, rice and beans, a side salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw was unique as it was slightly spicy instead of the somewhat sweet versions I've been used to. he rice and beans were a cross between jambalaya and red beans and were also very good. The plantains are unique. Even after four trips I am not sure if I like them, but I have finished them each time. They are not crispy and have a batter that is difficult to describe. All I can say is that you should try it for yourself. I highly recommend you try this restaurant. Sure it is somewhat divey, but the food and people make it great.

Don't be afraid that it's located in a sketchy strip mall. .. its not really that sketchy, just not a high traffic area. This mom and pop shop knows how to make a great home cooked meal for you. Just take a look at the pictures. They also have a great selection of fresh fruit juices.

Bring cash! But it's well worth the trip! Food gets a 4 out 5 being that it is hard to get Caribbean food in New Orleans. It embodies the true flavors of what Caribbean food tastes like. Don't be fooled by other the other places in the city that serve "Jamaican Food" this place is the Best! Bar none. If you know of anything better I good sir/madam challenge you to a duel. "And make sure your people are there!" In my Charlie Murphy voice.

Pros: -Good Haitian/Caribbean food -Great service Cons: -Not all food items are on the menu (The menu only has Spanish food items... You have to request Haitian/Jamaican food items & prices) -Cash only (the credit card machine was down)

It took us two tries to eat here but we finally got to try the food. The first time, we walked in and asked if they took cards. Nope. We left. Strike 1. Second time I came prepared with cash. First, let me say, do not come here for ambiance. This is no Commander's Palace. It wouldn't even be Commander's summer rental or cabin in the woods. It is a simple and spartan place with few decorations and cheap tables. That's it. I believe the phrase "hole in the wall" would fit this to a T. So the second time, we sat down and this really sweet woman talked to us and took our order. She was just about as sweet as anyone could be. It made me want to like the place before even trying the food. But I'm a jerk so decided it had better still be good, dangit!. I ordered the meat pie appetizer and the Girly got the plantains with beans and creme. I'd asked for 2 chicken pies and 2 cheese ones. I got 1 chicken pie and 3 cheese...But that's ok. She tried and they all tasted sweet but good. So no loss there. For dinner, I got the skirt steak and the girly got the Caribbean tacos. The sweet woman running the place (by herself, btw) didn't really get the idea of appetizers because she brought the girly's apps with her tacos. And the tacos are more like..tacitos but tasty. They really were quite good. Fresh and well cooked. The plantains were amazing. The Girly built me a plantain topped with the beans and creme. One bite and it was heavenly. Perfectly done. My skirt steak was simmered in curry seasoning. Then, when ordered, it hit the stove just long enough to warm up. Now I have to admit, it was nothing like tender. I like my meat bloody and tender. The Girly likes it over-cooked and tough. She will be ordering this next time. Don't get me wrong, it WAS very tasty. I liked the flavor a lot. It just wasn't my type of texture. A simple matter of preference. I also wanted hot sauce and she brought me something like a spicy little cup of coleslaw. Nothing like hot sauce but it was quite good. She did say that she would give me chilis next time but the hot sauces have too much salt and would throw off the flavors of the food. In all honesty, she's probably right. As someone else mentioned, the rice was not so great. It's Minute Rice. We all know what Minute Rice looks and tastes like and I can't, personally, stand the stuff. So while it had veggies and such in it, the flavor and texture were not appealing. I'd suggest staying away from the rice. I firmly believe that Minute Rice does not ever belong in a restaurant (or my house). The salad was basic lettuce with a nice dressing (no dressing option. Just eat what she brings. It's good). We asked for unsweetened tea and she brought us a tea with a little sugar and lemon. It actually suited the food quite well. While I do not like to drink sweatened tea, this was the perfect choice for the meal. So why do I still give it 4 stars? In all honesty, I'd probably give it 3 to 3 and a half stars for the food. Some misses and some wins (the plantains are worth the trip by themselves. SO is the tea). But the woman running it is so sweet and caring. She even gave the Girly a hug when we left. She cares about the food and her customers. She prices her food very fairly and in general, it's pretty good stuff. Plus, I want anyone who cares that much about her food to get more customers. More customers means more profit, more profit means maybe she can make herself as comfortable as she made us. I will be going back and I'll order whatever I get without rice. I have my eye on the goat. :)

The family decided tonight was a good night to go out and eat. Having purchased a Groupon for this place a while back, I figured it was time to give it a try. After all, Caribbean food on the Westbank? Who can say no to that?? This place is kind of hidden, but we knew it was near Murphy's bar on Gretna Blvd, so we didn't have issues finding it. Those who aren't familiar with the Westbank may have some difficulty. Parking is really the tricky part. Until recently, I was unaware that there are actually 3 restaurants in this tiny strip mall, and Friday night is definitely the busy night. We drove around a couple of times looking for any open parking spot... finally got one! We were greeted promptly upon walking in. It's a very casual atmosphere and definitely a family business. The boyfriend decided meat pies were necessary for an appetizer. They were well cooked and the spices were great! I'm not entirely sure that the sprinkles of cheese on top of the meat pies were necessary, but they didn't hurt the dish either. For dinner, I had the skirt steak, which was covered with peppers and onions, served with plantains and beans/rice. Actually, I had ordered salad and plaintains, but that got mixed up, and I'm kind of glad it did. The beans were good! The plaintains were delicious, as was the steak. This was served with some sort of spicy tomato-based dipping sauce, which if I could bottle it up and eat this sauce with every meal, I totally would. The boyfriend had the chicken and shrimp plate with the same sides. His was equally delicious. The baby picked off of both of our plates and definitely enjoyed every bite. All in all, delicious food. Yeah, we saved $10 by purchasing the Groupon, but I will return and gladly pay full price.... it's still a great value for a fantastic meal.

Again this Wank strip mall comes through for awesome eats! Taste of the Caribbean is in the same shopping center as Saffron (and Doo Wop!). This is definitely a mom and pop operation and that family feeling comes through in the food (which is the important part). The décor is not much, just a few simple tables and chairs and a counter. They had a TV (Lone Ranger was on!) and Caribbean music playing in the background. The fare looks like it may be expanding with new menus that go into effect today, but overall some simple dishes that pack in the flavor. There are several curry items, oxtail, chicken, shrimp, fish and some random things like tacos (and lasagna?). They also have some of my favorite Jamaican street food: meat patties (pies) and plantains. When I lived in Virginia, I had a Jamaican co-worker and I was always getting these things, rice and beans, and jerk chicken for lunch. (I'm kind of like a lost dog in that people tend to feed me.) I miss meat patties so much and this lunch allowed me to reminisce about those delicious lunches. I need to go back to try the jerk chicken soon. The service was friendly, but a little slow the other day, so give yourself plenty of time to eat. I would definitely go back for more deliciousness.

I tried this place because I was given a Groupon, which was about to expire. I came in with an open mind to Caribbean food and excited to try something different. I checked out the menu before hand and thought it might not be so bad. Boy, was I wrong. The gentleman that worked there was very pleasant and talked up various items on the menu that sounded like it would be really good. I decided to get the Mixed Chicken and Shrimp, which came with plantains, rice & beans side, and a salad. My boyfriend got the Steak with plain rice. I was told there were two ways that the plantains were cooked, so I ordered both. I also ordered their special salad with some sort of mango chutney. When the food came, both the chicken and shrimp were overcooked and dry, there was no salad because they "ran out", and there was only one type of plantain because the other kind also "ran out". I was glad that there was a sauce to dip my chicken in because it was very dry and the rice had a distinctive smell that I couldn't get past which caused me not to eat it. The server provided some of the mango chutney which would be on the salad, if they didn't run out. Overall, did not care for this place one bit. Luckily I had a Groupon because I would have been upset to pay for something that I was suppose to get but didn't because they "ran out". I also found it odd to talk up on items of the menu, but not know that you ran out of it. He could have offered us other items when he found out that he didn't have all the items described on the menu, but he didn't.

This place hit the spot on a hot summer night and it was great to have an option beyond the usual fare I eat (Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian, Seafood). The lemon lime drink (similar to Agua Fresca) was so refreshing. The Haitian meat patties were huge, fried perfectly (not greasy), stuffed generously with meat and cheese, and flavorful. The chicken tacos were overcooked and sort of dry, not a good choice. Both appetizers came with a delicious red gravy that would have tasted great on top of pasta! For my entree, I had the skirt steak, which was a little dry but had a lot of flavor. The fried plantains and sweet plaintains were perfect, as was the rice and peas. I am not normally a fan of rice because it is sometimes dry, but this was perfectly moist. I skipped the salad and asked for a side of coleslaw...what I didn't realize is that their coleslaw is more like a condiment, it's not something you eat a bowl of because it is very spicy, even by New Orleans standards. Very good, but beware of the spice level. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is basic and unpretentious. I would definitely go there again to try the delicious looking soup or the oxtail entree.

One visit with friends and I hope to go back. I had the curried goat which was a well-flavored stew of tender goat and vegetables. It was served with a salad, a mixture of rice and beans and sweet plantains. One of my friends had the oxtails which was a similar stew. Another friend had a grilled fish. They were both happy with their choices. All of the meals were filling. The location is small and one of several shops in a strip mall. The parking lot filled up quickly on Friday night. There are definitely more dishes that I want to try. Everything sounds good--from soup to grilled conch to the latin breakfast. I hope they survive in New Orleans tough market and on the Westbank which is overwhelmed with mass-market chains.

I went on the last day of the old menu (two months ago) so I definitely need to pass back by to try the new one. But I'll probably have to wait until a day when I'm not working or have a long time for lunch; the service is on Caribbean time or maybe it's that our server was also the chef. Plan your time accordingly. I'm not sure if it was even on the menu, but ended up with a rice curry with grilled shrimp. They were delicious. And the portion was so generous that I ate it for supper too. I liked the basic, yet colorful decor and the staff (OK the one lady) was really nice and checked on us to make sure we were enjoying the food. Don't let the strip mall corner dissuade you. And, yes, cash only.
