I was in the mood for sushi so I tried this place. The Crazy Friday Roll was excellent. My only complaint is that I wasn't given hardly any wasabi.

Not the greatest but good. A little pricey IMHO. The rolls I had were good and tasty.

Hibachi is delicious! Haven't really had the sushi here beside the California roll and that was good too!

Jamaican roll...yessss. Its a dark atmosphere. There are booths, tables, and a bar on one side, and Hibachi tables on the other. Though the lighting is pretty dim, I like this place. They are pretty fast, and the food was very tasty. The hibachi show was a bit generic, but the overly generous portions made up for that. The prices are decent, and the staff was friendly. I would definitely recommend. Good place for sushi in the parish.

By far the WORST service ever!!! Good was crappy. They was trying charge me for something I didn't order, then takes it off my receipt and tells me he gave me a "discount"! Spill eel sauce all on my legs and PHONE! Didn't give use utensils or plates till after I ask him twice!!! And our food was already lay out on the table! Didn't even give us wet/warm napkins before service.also pretty pricey for crappy food and service

I've probably eaten at two sushi restaurants in the NOLA area. Umi is my favorite so far! PARKING/SERVICE/DECOR: There's parking in the back and if I can recall from memory..I think it's small. Upon stepping in, the place was kinda empty but we were seated and greeted immediately by the host. There are tables and booths on the left side, hibachi grills on the right, and the sushi bar in the back. The staff is friendly and they're always around. Our waiter always checked in on us which is a plus! The decor is quite plain...not much decorations. The tables and chairs are like wood minus the hibachi. FOOD: The sushi rolls my cousin and I ordered were very good & delicious! We had the Baked Salmon for appetizer but I didn't get a chance to eat it till I got home. Maybe because I ate it so late that the taste was gone..but it was alright. I tasted more of the crab meat inside than the salmon itself. Umi Roll was alright..not my favorite. I've had rolls similar to this before, so maybe it's because my taste buds are used to it. Black Dragon Roll - There's also a Green Dragon Roll. The difference between the two is that Black Dragon has eel/unagi on top wheres the Green Dragon is avocado on top. I'm a fan of unagi so I ordered Black Dragon. Black Dragon Roll is probably one of the best rolls I've eaten! My opinion may be biased because I'm a fan of eel/unagi. Usually I order Unagi Roll which consists of only two pieces per order but Black Dragon has probably about 8 pieces! The happiness it filled my mouth..sigh! :) The only problem I had with this one is that it had a lot of sauce..which made it a bit too sweet. Jamaican Roll was great! I loved it! I'm a fan of seafood, so salmon also has a place in my heart. This was recommended by our server because I wanted something with baked or smoked salmon. (Not a fan of raw fish/salmon such as sashimi). It was delicious and if you love salmon as much as me, I suggest you give it a try! I was comparing this roll to the Lion King Roll (made in California; also my #1 favorite roll - baked salmon) and it may not be as good as the Lion King roll, but it's a good enough substitute for me. The only problem I had was that the pieces aren't as big compared to the LKR but it did have about the same amount of pieces as Black Dragon. Overall, Black Dragon Roll and Jamaican Roll were my favorites. I would definitely come back and order these again. This place is a must try. Wish I wasn't so far so I can come back!

This place was ok when it opened, now it's just bad. When I get a craving for sushi, I rather drive to one of the many good sushi restaurants in the city then go back here.

The service was ok, not bad but a little short. The food was good. I had the Chicken and Shrimp Hibachi and the chicken was a little dry, but all in all I would get it again. The burning man sushi roll was a highlight of the meal.

I always wait until I eat a restaurant a few times to review them... You never know if they were having an off day or what not. But I have never been disappointed at Umi. I've had the hibachi and the sushi. And both are phenomenal. But I have to say the sushi or should I say the sashimi is class act. I've been disappointed many of times in the New Orleans area with the quality of sashimi. But my pepper tuna melted in my mouth... That good! And the heart attack roll and the sexy-ist lady roll ... I'm hooked! I was only disappointed with the Cajun tuna.. I was picturing Ninja's in my mind.. And it was not it. But now I'm craving umi .. Guess I need to eat it again. Damn!

Oh Umi, I love you a full five stars worth, I really do, but that may be in part because you really are a four-star rather than five-star sushi restaurant. This place is relaxed, comfortable, and family-friendly. It might not regularly have monkfish liver or uni, but that's fine with me because my palate seems to be lacking in the sophistication required to truly enjoy those things anyway. Now, the more mundane fish, of which I am fond, is fresh and attractively prepared. There are daily off-menu specials too. The broiled squid, a regular menu item, is just delicious. The sake selection is pretty decent, and they carry a clear Japanese strawberry soda that my kids enjoy a lot. And speaking of kids, the servers here are unusually good with children. And certainly compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to. The guy I consider the most talkative of the sushi chefs there recognized me on my son's birthday, even though we sat on the hibachi side, and he got the staff to make a big deal out of my son, singing to him and giving him dessert at the end of the meal. He loved it! And of course, what parent wouldn't love that? Really, the staff here, overall, is super friendly. The hibachi side is enjoyable too, but I'm a sushi person more than a hibachi person. Still, it's a fun option, the kids enjoy the spectacle, and it's easy enough to get sushi while sitting there if you so prefer. The hibachi food is tasty, but it's heavy feeling. It could be improved by cutting down some on the sauce and offering a brown fried rice option. But that's just nitpicking and daydreaming. I do so love Umi for the sushi.

Perhaps one of the best sushi resturants in the area. For being a great seafood area, there is no good sushi resturants in town, The chefs were very friendly and made some great sashimi recommendations. The alboracore (sp) is a must. It is a perfect balance of the sweetness to the fish, saltiness of the ponzu sauce and just a small dab of hot sauce. The servers are more familiar with the hibachi menu more than the sushi, but looking at the crowd, that is the majority of their business.

I went here the other day for a late lunch around 1:30 pm and it was pretty deserted, which I liked because the service was faster. I live in New Orleans East so I was pretty happy that it opened because I hate driving 30-45 minutes just to get sushi. The drive was 10-15 mins, loved it ! The waiter we had was pretty cool, he told us all the yucky dishes plus the yummy ones. The food came out quick. We ordered a baked salmon, baked mussels (comes in 3), beef asparagus (nom nom nom), po boy roll (my boyfriend killed it!), crunchy roll (always a classic), and miso soup. The baked salmon came in two. It could of been cooked better, but it was still eatable. The crunchy roll - I found a piece of eyebrow hair on one of my rolls. As I was telling my boyfriend about it, one of the main owners heard me and approached me and asked if everything was alright, I just nodded because it wasn't a big deal. Then she came back and kept assisting to make me a new plate, which I kept assuring her it was fine because it was just on one roll. Long story short, she took the roll back and had the chef make a new one right away. In the end, they treated us with complimentary fried banana dessert --- so good !! I recommend this place because they offer such a nice service and is willing to satisfied their customers in any way possible. The bill was $40-45 ish, which is very average when my boyfriend and I always dine as a couple at a sushi place. 4 stars because they were fast, friendly, and yummy : ) Minus 1 star JUST because I found a hair other than that, try it out !

My friend brought home two special rolls the other day and they were awesome, so I was really excited about ordering to-go today. I went online to check out their menu and there weren't any descriptions next to their special rolls so I winged that sucker. Baked Seafood, Rice Paper Roll, Special Eel Roll and Po Boy Roll (suggested by the server over the phone). My friend and I hurried up and hopped in our car to pick up the sushi, 15 mins there and back. Not bad at all. The location is pretty convenient If you stay in the east. For that one star! I love love love the Rice Paper Roll. It came with a tangy brown sauce and they both complement eachother very well. I was really satisfied with how many rolls they gave us. Usually when I order a rice paper roll, it comes in 6. Moving on to the Po Boy Roll. It tasted yummy and sliced nice and thin just the way I like my sushi rolls. The Special Eel Roll was okay, I wished it would've came with some EEL SAUCE! Special eel roll not so special without it. And finally the Baked Seafood. It sucks because everything was good but this was the most disappointing item that I ordered. It was stuffed nicely with a ton of seafood but lacked alot of flavor. The sauce was watery when I wished it was a bit thicker. Maybe I should let my friend order next time and just stick to eatting. Even though it wasn't up to my expectations, I understand that their just starting out so I'll try ordering something different next time. I'm making sure I dine in as well! But for now 3 stars will do.

A nice place for the parish to have. The sushi chef comes from years of experience at Little Tokyo on Carrolton. Rock N Roll is definitely their best roll. Good food. Good staff. Just a little awkward. All-in-all, it is okay. I'd recommend it for a nice sit-down sushi place. I'd still pick Bonzai over it though.

Ya'll guess what? Chalmette now has a sushi & hibachi restaurant that just opened up last weekend. It's actually pretty good. They are working out some of the glitches, inexperienced servers, orders not being inputted on time, etc...you know how it goes. Hibachi seems to fill up pretty fast. They take hibachi reservations EXCEPT on Friday and Saturday, but in all fairness it gets busy on the weekends, however, it's a good idea to call in advance to see how busy they are. Saturdays dont seem so bad. You get alot for the amount of food you pay for. Also, if there are no seats at hibachi, dont fret, you can get hibachi TOGO or at the tables. In addition to this, you can now get hibachi fried rice--shrimp, beef or chicken. Look at that yall! I really love their Love Boat, it's a good amount of food for 2 people. The fish tasted so fresh. Steak and Chicken teriyaki was great not chewy. No more having to drive far to get some good sushi. Yay for gas mileage! Also, I love their house special rolls. I recommend the po-boy roll, bye bye katrina roll, and the FEMA roll. I really like their mochi selection. For those of you not familiar with japanese food, mochi is a popular japanese dessert. In fact, most visitors that go to Japan usually will see boxes of these at the airport as they leave. This is to entice people to buy them as last minute gifts because they were too busy to buy touristy trinkets. Heck, Id be happy with a box of these. Except the mochi at Umi would melt because it's sorta served as a cool treat. The outside is a rice dough coating and the inside may be green tea, red bean or mango. Just depends. Try it people, it wont kill you. Cash and credit, casual dress, great for families. Small parking lot. People please tip accordingly. My mouth dropped open as I overheard a server complain that some high school kids ate 106 dollar worth of food only to tip $3. Also, the person that said the owner worked years at Little Tokyo on S. Carrollton---ok, Ill let you know that the owner was 25 when he first opened up the restaurant. You just need to perfect your craft and work hard at it. They are open lunch and dinner throughout the day and 7 days a week. Sunday - Thursday 11-9:30PM Friday & Saturday 11-10:30PM Good lawd, how will Chalmations handle this.

After a few missteps in its opening weeks, Umi has blossomed into an excellent sushi and hibachi restaurant. During the lunch and dinner rushes, getting a seat at the hibachi side can be an exercise in patience, but it's worth it. The different hibachi chefs have different styles and are of varying skill levels as showmen, but the food is invariably delicious. I recommend the hibachi filet as rare as you can get it with hibachi rice. The sushi side of the equation is also very good. Umi's geisha roll and po-boy roll are both delicious. I usually start with a squid salad, which is one of the best I've ever had. A few complaints: some of the wait staff are inexperienced, and it shows in everything from incorrect orders to slow or staggered service to empty glasses. But most of the staff are very good, and I've noticed that the bad servers don't stick around very long, which is a point in management's favor. I've also noticed that the ventilation equipment can't seem to keep up with all of the hibachi stations going at once, so the air occasionally gets a little thick. And if that happens you'll probably be taking some of the delicious hibachi smell with you on your clothes when you head out. It's not a deal breaker but it can be annoying. The effect is most strongly pronounced if you sit at the hibachi bar.

We were excited to find out that a new sushi & hibachi restaurant opened in Chalmette. We love to support small and local businesses. We went there looking for reasons to come back. Unfortunately, we left very disappointed. We ordered 6 items: a clear soup, seafood salad, snowcrab naruto roll, volcano roll, tiger roll, and a seafood udon. The clear soup and seafood salad was good (the fish tasted fresh). The snowcrab naruto was ultimate fail and the volcano roll wasn't too far behind it. The tiger roll was decent. The best item we ordered was the seafood udon. It came out sizzling, flavored well, and nicely loaded with seafood and veggies. We understand it's a new business and there are kinks that need to be worked out with the service. Our server was pleasant but seemed shy and awkward serving us. However, we didn't let this get to us. Our total bill was a little over $60 which is average for a decent sushi dinner. We ate most of our food except for the snowcrab naruto roll. We were only able to eat 2 of the 6 rolls. The thing that totally surprised us was the fact that we were charged for asking for extra sauce (which we always ask for at the various sushi restaurants) for the snowcrab naruto roll that was total and utter failure. Even though it was only 50 cents for the sauce, it felt like they were adding insult to injury. At the present moment, we have decided not to come back to Umi. But you never know, we may give it a second chance. Hopefully, they'll get it right next time.
