Part of me longs for one of these near home; the other part is thankful there isn't one, because I would eat there all the time!! The swiss/shroom sandwich with chunky tomato basil soup was a perfect meal! Then, friends and I shared a grilled cheese donut (of course!) and four different dessert donuts. Oh. My. Goodness. To die for! Great prices and tasty food.

Pretty good sandwiches and nice variety. If you like grilled cheese and variety this is a winner. The tomato soup has not been good the last two times I've been here. It's more like trying to have marinara sauce with your sandwich.... Good, but not really what you might be expecting.

I've been twice now, with two different people, and we all love it. Although I still have yet to try the sandwich that I show up for (the armagoeta) and keep getting one of the daily specials. The food is really good and the service (for a counter operation) is good too. It is almost at the perfect price point -- a little more expensive might be too much for a sandwich. Good quality and a reasonable price is a winner in my book.

I LOVE the concept! I love the neighborhood - what I saw of it on a rainy evening! I even LOVE grilled cheese and tomato soup! Having said all that, you would think that I would have rated my experience a bit higher, but after contemplating my food, I don't think I can. It was good!! But it wasn't great and it certainly wasn't one of those memorable flavors that make me say WOW!!! Perhaps I was overwhelmed by the visual menu and just went with the first thing that struck me, which I shouldn't have done. Nonetheless I ordered the Turkey, Pesto, Mozzarella with a cup of tomato soup. I liked the sandwich, but I wish I would have ordered a sharp cheese to help out the pesto, rather than a not-so-flavorful cheese. Like I said, it was still good. The tomato soup, however wasn't that great. It was a bit tangy and canny...kind of like what you get from a... can. Had I paid more attention I would have realized I had more options and more than likely I would have ordered something different. Oh well....next time. Yep, I said next time. I would certainly come back and try one of the many diverse menu options. There's so much to choose from, I know I can add more stars the next time I come!

Due their originality and the flavors of soup, I really wanted to give Tom & Chee more stars but I cannot. Regardless of how exciting their flavors seemed it only tasted like a frisco melt from Hardee's. This place was overpriced truck stop food.

You walk in and it is a little overwhelming. A lot of choices (good) and a confusing layout (not good). Staff is very friendly and helpful. I think they are used to people who look like deer in headlights. I am a huge fan of bacon & blue. If you like blue cheese & bacon, this is the one for you. Will definitely go back but not sure I am willing to try anything else since I have had such bacon & blue greatness!

Mac N Cheese grilled cheese and Cream of Mushroom soup were both yummy. My daughter had the Smores which was more of a dessert than a dinner. This fit her sweet tooth just fine. I love the simplicity and variety of warm and cheesy selections here. The counter staff-especially a very cute girl named Jana made our experience very nice.

Three words: Grilled Cheese Donut! Glazed donut sliced in half with Cheddar cheese toasted in between the two halves. You must eat it!

I've been here a couple times now and have enjoyed everything I've ordered thus far. Their creamy tomato basil soup was yummy, especially with the winter temperatures. It was also great for dipping my sandwich in! I had the Turkey Pesto grilled cheese and was very satisfied. It is a perfect size for a sandwich, not too big but not flat and skimpy like some grilled cheeses might be. The pricing is very reasonable and would make a great place to grab some lunch or a quick dinner. The service is fast and friendly, interior is fine but nothing too exciting (reminded me of Jimmy Johns a bit). I like this place and would certainly say to give it a try!

Ordered two sandwiches, one no tomato, of course it came with tomatoes. One added Avocado, for $1, didn't get the Avocado. What we got was good, would have been much better if the order was correct.

The 'recipes' are very imaginative, but the price, for a cheese sandwich is a bit too much.

What a neat place, I love grilled cheese and there is such a variety of options. I got the Hot and spicy with pepperoni, peppers, and pepper jack cheese on wheat and the Creamy tomato soup. It was amazing. I can't wait to go back and try something else. They have grilled cheese donuts I was not brave enough to try but I have heard that they are good.

Okay so I HATE CHEESE. I don't like any diary product. I just gag whenever I taste any cheese. However, for some reason, I'm okay with mozzarella on pizza. That's about it. I didn't want to try this place, but since my fiance got the $12 groupon for $6 we decided to try it out. We went for lunch on a Tuesday around 11am. Not that many people but few. So we got to order right away. I got the pesto turkey because that was one of the only sandwiches with only mozzarella cheese. The rest had like swiss or american WITH mozzarella or whatever. Anyways... so this was basically my first grilled cheese sandwich experience and I hate to admit it, but I kinda liked it. I was mentally getting sick when I was trying to finish the second half of the sandwich, but the flavor was delicious. I just need to get over this cheese-phobia. Overall, highly recommend this place if you like/don't like grilled cheese sandwiches.

I liked the food very much, and I loved the variety. My kids enjoyed it and want to go back. I'm taking off a star because it was pretty dirty. At 5 p.m. on a Saturday with lots of employees and no line, I expect dishes to be off the tables. The outside area had discarded dishes on every table, and the inside tables needed a wipe-down. The bathroom in the shopping center is close to deplorable, though I have to say that's not the restaurant's fault. The shopping center needs to do a much better job of keeping it clean or they will definitely lose tenants. I tweeted them on Saturday indicating the problem - no response. But still, I'd go back. What I had was delicious. I chose brie, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms on whole wheat. Yum.

I have to say that I must have hit this place on a bad day. With only 4 people in the restaurant on a quiet Sunday night, it took 20 minutes for my sandwich to arrive and 30 for my soup! The sandwich, while full of great ingredients, was cold and poorly cooked (the spots that were on the grill were scorched and the rest was uncooked) and the soup, their daily special, was supposed to be being made as I ordered and ould be out shortly, fresh and hot. Thirty minutes later, the soup I was served was tasty but room temp. I was 10 feet from the grill so I just can't figure out how it could have all been done so badly. I really wanted to like this place, the reviews have been so good but I now question whether or not I will bother trying again.

This is the third time I've been to Tom and Chee and it's pretty good. You can pick up to 3 cheese for your sandwich or pick from a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches from the menu. I highly recommend spinach and tomato on you grilled cheese; yum!!! My friend always gets the vegan cheese and gluten free bread. I was slightly disappointed with the "fruit cup", which was a small portion of strawberries and banana. I've only had the non-cream based tomato soups, but they were good. We really enjoy sitting outside in bardstown road:) I'll definitely go back!!

  • Nicole L.

The options for grilled cheese and tomato soup were overwhelming! I had the bacon and cheddar grilled cheese and chunky tomato soup, and it was ALMOST as good as The Main Eatery on Fridays. My 3 yr old loved it. They were quick, and it was a straight-forward concept. I'll be back

Love this place. Took my daughter for the first time. She loved it. Mac and grilled cheese is a favorite of wife and child. Only complaint is that there is not more then 2 soups of the day.

  • Doug D.

Came with my wife for dinner. Was amazingly easy to order a healthy dinner, get it fast, and the price ($16.43) for two sandwiches, soup and salad is out of this world.

I had to try this out today for lunch because I practically grew up on tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. I tried the crunchy American grilled cheese sandwich and the creamy tomato basil soup. The crunchy American is your classic grilled cheese with you guessed it, American cheese but to keep things a bit more interesting it also has plain potato chips right on the sandwich. As a kid who used to like to put my chips onto my sandwiches this was a big hit for me. The soup was good but left a little something to be desired for me. It was far more acidic tasting than I expected a creamy tomato soup to be. Usually I prefer a creamy tomato to a classic tomato because the cream cuts the acidity pretty significantly but this was not the case here. I may not order this soup again, not to say it was bad it just wasn't what I was expecting. Overall I will definitely be back my only real complaint was that my sandwich, cup of soup, and medium soft drink cost just over 8 dollars which is not bad for a typical lunch but considering what it is it's a little bit high and it's not as if I left stuffed, in fact I needed a snack a few hours later. Maybe next time I'll need a dessert too!

One of the Highlands newest little restuarants.. And I love the rye with gouda cheeze,,,, of course with the dipping tomato soup... added some turkey and bacon to my grilled cheeze this time... Loved it... was surprised to have chunked turkey.. instead of luncheon slices... But wish the bacon would have been slices instead of crumbles...

How fascinating can a place be that specializes in heating 2 buttery slices of bread with a layer of cheese between them? How many variations can you possibly come up with before you are completely bereft of ideas? Apparently, Tom+Chee has managed to come up with an abundance of interesting variants of this seemingly prosaic dish. When you first walk in, you are overwhelmed by the sheer variety of sandwiches on offer, the names of which are emblazoned across massive blackboards for your eyes to feast on. I was in the mood for something spicy so I opted for the Hot+Spicy (Pepperoni, Hot Peppers, Onions and Pepper Jack Cheese) - it was yummy, although I wish they had thrown in a few more slices of pepperoni. My wife got the Grilled Cheese which was also very good. The girl at the counter was very friendly and offered us some samples of their soup. Her service definitely made the experience wonderful! We enjoyed the meal so much we ended up going back less than a week later. This time I got the Spicy Beef (off the Grilled Cheese + Potato Chips section) - this had roast beef, hot peppers, Pepper Jack cheese, cheddar cheese and Jalapeno-flavored potato chips. Absolutely delicious!! I can't wait to go back and try their other sandwiches...

Gluten free grilled cheese!!!! I have Celiac Disease, so I can't tell you the last time I was able to order a grilled cheese sandwich (unless I make it myself)! If you are in the area, check this place out! The food is legit. You can make your own or order one of their signature sandwiches. I went with the turkey pesto and added goat cheese - very good move I might add. The more cheese the better! Then you can also choose a tomato soup to go with it. I ordered the chunky tomato soup. It was good, but my sandwich was the star of my lunch for sure. They even asked me if I had a gluten allergy and offered to make my sandwich separate from the rest! YES!! This also made me smile. The restaurant could use a good cleaning and sprucing up...but I know I'm just splitting hairs. Overall, it's delicious and a great spot for lunch!

Once I initially heard "donut grilled cheese," there was no doubt in my mind that my husband and I had to try this place on our visit to louisville. This was one of our last stops on our way out of town. We stopped here for brunch on a Sunday around 12pm. I chose the bananarama (caramelized banana, smoked gouda, donut) with a dipper of creamy tomato basil soup and my husband chose the plain donut grilled cheese with cheddar and added salt & vinegar chips. We both drank water. With his student ID (we live in middle Tn where he attends school), we spent right at $10. Not too shabby compared to the price of other meals during this trip. Although I will say I noticed their prices went up from what the online menu showed, it was still very affordable. We placed our orders then went outside to sit. It didn't take too long to get our food. Both donuts were awesome (I added hot sauce to mine and it was even better) but I kind of wish I had ordered a grilled cheese with regular bread. This was more of a dessert to me, even with the hot sauce. I normally eat more savory things for breakfast. BUT like I said, it was awesome and I'm glad we tried this place! The soup was fine, nothing spectacular but good. The regular grilled cheeses looked delicious and if we are back in Louisville (or anywhere else there is a tom + chee) we will visit again and try a regular grilled cheese (and maybe get a donut grilled cheese to go...)

Who doesn't LOVE a grilled cheese?!? This place has more crazy combinations than I ever considered. I've been here several times and, so far, have never been disappointed. They were featured on Shark Tank a few years ago and it's a huge success. The food is amazing, the prices reasonable, and the service is always awesome! The menu is handwritten on the entire chalkboard wall. It's almost overwhelming. There are several locations around town and all are very consistent. Love this place and will continue to visit.

This place is DOPE. They have their origin story printed on their cups; I love a good "from the bottom" success story. These guys took a very simple idea and made it a very enjoyable experience with a variety of "grilled cheese" variations - all mouth-watering... and fantastic tomato soup to go with. The restaurant has a subtle artsy trendy look inside; the staff are patient, nice and helpful. I ordered my grilled cheese from the "make your own" options - roasted chicken, guacamole, tomato, lettuce, swiss and smoked gouda on pumpernickel rye... and it was AMAZING. I can't recall the last time I was so satisfied by a SANDWICH. Love this place.

Great food and the workers their are very helpful. I always get the Italian and it taste delicious. I bring my family to try it all the time and they love it. its a relax environment and great to meet new people and the view outside is lovely. Great place to put the restaurant on Bardstown. I have not tried the donut grill cheese but next time I will.

Ordered a "Hot+Spicy" and Chunky Tomato soup for take-out. It was ready in ten minutes. When I got home it was still piping hot, and they threw in two packs of oyster crackers and spoon/fork. Sandwich was the best I've had anywhere on Bardstown, and the soup was a 10 out of 10, very rich flavor that paired lerfect with the sandwich. Total came to only $7.98 before tip. In and out speed, best lunch-food in this area of Bardstown Rd and you can't beat the price. Will definitely go here again. And again.

The day we were there the ice machine wasn't working. But that only affected the drinks, the food was good. Some unusual sandwiches combinations were tempting and I'll have to go back for more. The dining area is a little too fast food for me, but I'll go back.

My husband and I wanted a tasty soup and sandwich. We ordered the buffalo chicken soup (which is delicious) and sandwiches. Right when we are getting ready to pay, they tell us there is enough soup for one cup and that one of us would have to order a different soup. So I declined on the soup. For two sandwiches, two drinks and one small cup of soup, it cost us $20! A bit overpriced, if you ask me. Then, we went to sit down and both available booths were dirty and had grease on the seats. No one offered to clean it up for us and my husband used napkins to wipe up the mess. I find it funny that the booths were placed right in front of the cashier so she had a clear view of my husband cleaning the seat but did not volunteer to assist. Food was tasty, yet overpriced, and service was not acceptable. Not going to return, which is a shame cause I do love that buffalo chicken soup.

I first saw this restaurant on Shark Tank & then when I was traveling cross country, I was excited to hear about their vegan options...but they were not so good. I believe they use "follow your heart" vegan cheese & they certainly don't know how to use it, it was cold & not melted, it was like eating blocks of cold cheese flavored jello. But I would be willing to give it a go again next time I'm in the area, maybe they've improved!

Can't help but give it up at the best grilled cheese I've ever had. Love the unlimited possibility of combinations along with the choice of soup such as the chunky tomato basil. So delicious to dunk too! Typically when I go I pile on as many tasty ingredients as I can imagine and it never disappoints. But as my favorite combo so far is absolutely the fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, potato chips, garlic humus, roast beef, bacon, and pepperoni all on sour dough bread. Hard to write this without wanting to take the walk there right now. Would love to see them drop some cash on the dining area to really catch the publics attention and maybe even table service. Always down to go back!

I always get the Flying Pig ... Bacon, pickles, Gouda, yum. It's not the healthiest thing in the world -- the grease is visible through the wrapping paper -- but on some days (particularly after a long night) nothing else hits the spot quite like this. I'm not a fan of tomato soup so can't speak to that part of the menu, but the sandwiches are routinely tasty and it's a nice break from the norm.

Pepperoni pizza soup- delicious. We got two doughnut grilled cheeses (strawberry lemonade and classic both scrumptious and sinful) The gal working the register was sweet as pie and very attentive. Still lovin' Tom+Chee!

I won't lie, this place was good. Just get a fruit and veggie I.V. ready. Greasy, greasy, greasy.

This was only my second visit to any Tom+Chee. My first experience at the UofL location was a good one. This time I went with my SO for a late lunch. There was only one person working and he was taking and filling orders with no urgency whatsoever. A little wait is not a terrible thing, but the food was totally not worth waiting for. I ordered a turkey and pesto and my dude ordered a grilled mac n cheese sandwich. His was burnt (I like my grilled cheese dark but this was totally charred). On top of that the Mac n cheese inside was totally bland. He added salt and got sauce to make it edible. Mine was also bland--just not enough flavor in the pesto. For soup he had the creamy tomato and I had the split pea with bacon. Thanks to the bacon, my soup was decent and had enough seasoning but his was bland again and needed salt. He loves tomato soup and had high hopes for the place (as did I after a good experience at the other location). All in all we spent $25 and didn't enjoy the meal. There are so many other great options on Bardstown rd for the same price or less, I don't see us ever going back. It's quite possible this was an off day with a not-great midday cook, but also very possible the quality went down because they expanded too quickly.

Old man winter has no chance when battled with Tom + Chee! What a great lunch! I'll do the math for you: Flying Pig + Tomato Basil/ 34 Degree Weather = Perfection. Heck + Yea!

I love Tom & Chee!!! I was skeptical to try their grilled cheese doughnut but I knew it couldn't be bad. I love the grilled cheese doughnut as well as their grilled Mac and cheese. I love the fact that you can add bacon for a small fee because bacon is so great paired w/ a grilled cheese. Wide variety of options and great service, couldn't ask for a better grilled cheese restaurant near me!!

  • Lena R.

What better meal to have on a cold snowy day than a grill cheese sandwich accompanied with tomato soup?! I've passed by this restaurant so many times before but never actually took the time to find out what they had to offer until I was watching an episode of Shark Tank with the owners of Tom & Chee. Needless to say, I did not get the grilled cheese donut or the infamous grilled Mac and Cheese. Instead I opted for the BBQ & Bacon with classic tomato soup. The BBQ & Bacon was definitely soul-satisfying. The salty bacon & chips coupled with the American cheese was perfect. Sure you can make your own grilled cheese & throw some chips on it--but everyone knows grilled cheese is so much better when someone else makes it. I really don't have much to say about the tomato soup. In all fairness, I really don't care for tomato soup unless its the creamy kind from Panera Bread but I digress. The tanginess from the soup tamed the saltiness of the sandwich and was a perfect match. So if you're ever wanting a grilled cheese sandwich with a twist and lots of pizzazz Tom & Chee is where you want to be!

I am sure everyone can agree with me that Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese sandwitches are a huge "comfort food" staple. We love it in our house on any day but especially on a cool or rainy day. Of course once we discovered Tom+Chee we had to try it out. My daughter immediately decided Mac&Cheese sandwitch and chunky soup were calling her name. I decided to "make your own" and ended up with a most delicious veggie sandwitch with goat cheese. We shared the soup. We really enjoyed the lunch, it was just what the doctor ordered. Next time we are in Louisville we are definitely trying the dessert sandwiches too. SO VERY creative! Thumbs up!

It was one of those days when nothing in life was going right...my dog died, girlfriend of five years just left me and found out I had prostate cancer. (okay okay, NONE of that was really happening, but I still wasn't having a good day) I was walking along Bardstown Road in search of something that will cure my woes. Wild Ginger? Nah, not feeling Sushi. Tapas? Nope. It was then the big red Tom + Chee sign stood out. Alright, let's check this joint out. Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately greeted with a gleeful "Welcome to Tom & Chee!" It wasn't the the forced welcoming you sometimes get at restaurants, but the honest "Hey I really like working here, so welcome!" kind of greeting. That in itself gave me a pick me up I needed on that gloomy day. I stood there aimlessly trying to decipher the chalkboard menu and the cacophony of chalk was confusing me. One the employees saw my confusion and asked if I needed any help. He handed me a menu and asked if I wanted to try the soup of the day. Before I could say anything, there was a ramekin of the Blue Cheese Chili in front of me. I tried it... and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD , WHAT AN ORGASM! A large bowl of this chili needs to be in my stomach ASAP. I order the Blue Cheese Chili and the Flying Pig sandwich. Order was delivered to me in a matter of a few minutes served with a big smile. Flying Pig Sandwich reminded me of a Cubano, aka *AMAZEBALLS*. I couldn't finish the large portion of the blue cheese chili however good it was. I asked for a to go soup container. The gentlemen proceeded to fill up a container with the Chili and topped it off with Blue Cheese. You want customer satisfaction? There it is ladies and gentlemen. He cracked the industry secret to retaining customers. The staff single handedly brought me out of despair (okay, I'll stop being so dramatic) and made a life long fan/devotee/ patron of this establishment. Tom + Chee epitomizes all the hallmarks of what a comfort food restaurant should be. Filling, delicious, friendly. Get up and go. Now.

The Meek Grilled Cheese Shall Inherit the Love of All the World. This place is gaining a good deal of notice since their appearance on Shark Tank for a healthy dollop of venture capital. They are on the move too with a new location about to open in St. Matthews. This is not your mom's grilled cheese (not that hers is not great, mine used Philly cream cheese...yeah that's right), this is the place to experiment with a combo of cheeses on many different breads, including gluten free (which for some reason does not fall apart here). They have pretty much any meat imaginable and with other grill-able ingredients such as pork rind, and potato chips you are bound to come up with something you will love. I have been here several times, one of my favs is the 3 little piggy with ham, bacon, and pork rinds. But I have noticed that now I really just want to go in and load up 2 pieces of bread with as many cheeses as I dare for a grilled cheese experience like none other. Of course what would grilled cheese be without it old friend tomato soup? Here they have 3 kinds, the original but homemade, chunky tomato basil, and creamy tomato basil. If you are a wich-dipper get the creamy it will offer better coating like a silky layer of latex based tomato goodness on your quattro-queso concoction. This is a great place for the family since adults and kids alike can get what they want, it is not cheap but the ingredients are good so the price is in line with what you get. bottom line is this is solid small business that is going to get big and apparently go a lot of places so get in on it and say "I have been going there for years" to the folks in NYC and Texas who will get franchises at some point and think they have the best thing ever.

Great experience here. Ordered our food, and it was fantastic. Then we decided to get a grilled cheese donut. After about 5 minutes of waiting for our food, one of the employees came over and asked if we'd gotten it yet. We said no, and he apologized and ran back to make it. Clearly, there had been a miscommunication. A minute or two later, our S'mores grilled cheese donut came out (it was fantastic) and the manager came out and gave us our money back, due to the mixup/delay. We hadn't complained or asked for our money back. We said we didn't need our money back, and he said, "It wouldn't be right to keep it." We will be back, because great customer service is always worth it. Oh, and the food is awesome :)

Overrated and not that good. The cashier was really strange, and the food was very greasy and had no special taste to it. Not coming back.

Tom and Chee ups the ante on grilled cheese, putting all kinds of crazy stuff on an American classic. There's a pretty big menu with a lot of vegetarian-friendly options, and most things are a fair-but-not-great deal (sandwiches $5-7 that will fill you up with some chips or a soup). Some of the sandwiches are better than others, but overall the food quality is pretty high for a very casual, semi-fast-food joint (this place used to be a Penn Station, and the atmosphere is very similar). The basic sandwiches (Pep+Chee, Beef+Cheddar, etc.) are eh, but the unique ones (like the Armagoetta) are very, very good and worth the extra dollar or two. Also the tomato soup really is good, especially the tomato with dill. I've brought several people to this place, and everyone seems to really enjoy. Recently, I brought my girlfriend here, and she also really liked the food - but I will say this: She had aTOMic and CHEEsy farts for the rest of the day. So, the food may be delicious, but...well, you know.

It's the best (and fanciest) grilled cheese sandwich you'll ever eat. But alas, it's still just a grilled cheese sandwich and you're gonna smell like the grill for days.

Go for the soup and the soup and the soup! Grilled sandwiches with butter? Check. Bacon and Bleu Cheese? Check. Rustic tomato soup? Check and double check! Tom Chee may be a chain and I am not a chain lover but this one won me over. The soup is always hot and I can add bacon to ANYTHING! I am not bold enough to try the donut grill cheese but it smelled yummy. All their sandwiches are creative and smell yummy. I have not had but two or three different ones but always find myself back to the Back and Bleu Cheese with a side of tomato soup. So yes, get the soup!!

Love Tom+Chee. It's simple. But delicious and keeps me coming back. I usually get the macaroni and cheese sandwich but I've tried lots of others and love their diverse menu. Lots of great options. I always prefer Tom+Chee over Lil Cheezers because they better prices and more options. And more seating, as well.

I just got carry out and I'm surrounded by so much yummy goodness. I had a $12 Groupon expiring which is why my lunch is going to seem so huge when I type it out next. Caprese salad, pepperoni pizza soup and the shroom and swiss grilled cheese. I will have at least one more meal out of these leftovers. I often study a menu before I go to a restaurant and I'm glad I did. The menu is overwhelming and on more than one wall when you walk in. I knew exactly what I was getting before I walked in. I'm giving myself a huge pat on the back for this one. mmm mmm mmm.

I heard they had vegan cheese and had to check it out. It's totally crowded from the hype about it, but it was an easy cheap lunch. I got vegan cheese on rye just to try it unadulterated, but if I returned, I'd definitely load on the veggies and herbs -- the vegan cheese by itself can be a little odd. Definitely a curiousity, and worth a try if you can visit when it won't be crowded!

Every now and then, I stumble into a business with a novel concept that's so simple, clever and useful, a voice screams in my head "Why didn't I think of that?!" Tom+Chee is wonderful - a casual restaurant that does essentially just two things and does them well: Tomato Based Soups and a cornucopia of Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Just about everything is made-to-order and there are more varieties of Grilled Cheese than you can imagine in your wild grilled-cheesiest dreams. And custom creations of your own design exponentially expand the menu. I won't delve into all of the menu options, but don't confuse diversity for lack of quality- I've sampled several sandwiches and they seem to have each down to a science of scrumptious. Each soup and sandwich is as delicious as it is affordable. The perfect food for a cold, dreary night when something warm and relatively simple hits the spot. Bonus: the service is reliably quick and the staff is often all smiles. My only complaint? I wish that they delivered, but when asked the fastidious and helpful counter girl confessed that "Grilled Cheese Doesn't Travel Well." Sage wisdom and I think a candidate for the title of the next Death Cab for Cutie album.

Great sandwiches and soups. So many excellent variations on the grilled cheese sandwich. My favorite is The Flying Pig. It's so delicious I upgrade to Double Decker. The chicken soup is not like store bought. It's deliciously spiced with macaroni noodles. Make sure to ask for oyster crackers. I only wish the cost was a bit more reasonable. $20 for 2 double decker Flying Pigs & 2 cups of soup is the reason I make Tom+Chee a rare treat rather than a lunchtime frequent choice.

I wasn't very hungry when I went to Tom and Chee with a friend, but I was amazed at all the different options they had for grilled cheeses. Definitely would like to go back sometime.

Omg...that was THE best grilled cheese and tomato soup I've ever had in my life. My husband brought me here on a whim and I was thinking...grilled cheese...ok...but wow! This is a place you just have to experience.

What's not to like about grilled cheese and tomato soup? OK, the place is somewhat a dive-y atmosphere but it's clean and well-organized and fairly large. I was expecting more of an atmosphere after reading so much about the small but growing chain, plus my wife told me the Newport location had good interior design. Don't look for nice ambiance here, but the food was very tasty, plus they have a soda fountain just like mickey d's. BONUS! Giving up just 9 bucks for a blue cheese & bacon sammich and a good bowl of soup, I would come back most anytime for a simple meal. They offer about 15 grilled cheese varieties and maybe 5 soups daily. Food is good, like your mom would make. Just remember this is a grilled cheese joint and that is the atmosphere. No alcohol. Solid lunch, solid dinner. YUM.

Nice little place to stop in and grab a quick bite. The menu is scrawled across a store-long chalk board, so you have plenty to choose from. Not fancy in any way, but on a chilly day, I'd stop by for sure.

Dear Grilled Cheesus, Thank you Tom+Chee for coming to the 'Ville!! I think grilled cheese is one of those foods that only tastes really good when someone else makes it for you (be it a restaurant....or your mom). So a place dedicated to grilled cheese...no need to try and convince me more! I stopped in today for an early dinner and got the Bacon & Blue, that has bacon, bleu cheese, and mozzarella. It was, in a word, fantastical. The thing I likes the most, and you are gonna laugh at this, is that they don't use *strips* of bacon. They use crumbled bacon pieces. Makes a sammich easier to eat (instead of the strips coming off the sandwich with the first bite...does that happen to anyone else? or just me?) AND it means that there is bacon in each bite. It was delicious and exactly what I wanted. I am unashamed that I want to go back for the Grilled Cheese Donut. Do you think I can add bacon to it? :-P

Pretty good. If you want to make the experience a little healthier you can request that no butter be used on your sandwich during grilling. I'd expect the service to be a bit quicker, but all in all it's pretty good.

To be honest, I don't want "chaineries" in my Deer Park neighborhood (in The Highlands). WIth the addition of this third chain I'd say the life is dangerously close to gone from the neighborhood. Nevertheless, I've been here 3x since it opened. It's an interesting, reasonably well executed concept...not insanely overly priced (though too pricey to be considered cheap). The sandwiches are tasty (but overly fatty), the tomato soup is good (but I like the tomato soup next door at Sitar better), and I can forgive grilled cheese donuts (since the salads here are excellent...starting with the popular Cabrese). If I have to live with Qdoba and Panera...then I'd be hard pressed to draw the line at Tom+Chee...as it's better than either of those two chains.

I agree with the other reviews that comment on the overwhelming nature of the menu presentation a few feet up from eye level (and I'm tall) written in chalk on a blackboard. Luckily, one of the staff suggested my friend and I take a look at a printed out version of the menu. I feel like entrepreneurs of this restaurant concept and I are kindred spirits. A simple concept, but a mind-boggling amount of options to choose from. They have explored the possibilities of this meal in a lot of different directions; you don't usually see a casual counter service style restaurant welcome variety and complication. Not only can you choose from a wealth of different cheeses, meat options and bread, but the choices don't end with the grilled cheese sandwich... It's like they surveyed the most difficult of restaurant-goers, the people who want to exchange the typical side of fries for the side salad AND add extra cheese to that salad and asked them what kind of substitutes and additions they could dream up if they were to order a grilled cheese and tomato soup. So, of course a side salad is an option instead of the tomato soup. Want just a little bit of tomato soup to dip the sandwich? It's on the menu for a buck. What about a second level? No problem, just get the double decker for $2. You also have common sense options like being able to trade out half of a sandwich for a cup of soup at no charge. I initially thought I wouldn't enjoy a hearty tomato soup and fancily stacked grilled cheese in the summer heat, but I was wrong. With all these options Tom+Chee doesn't have to be a super heavy meal reserved for winter time. One last side note: great idea to chop up the bacon so you get a taste of it in every bite!

I tried T&C for the first time today. I've almost tried it several times, but have always decided to go somewhere else last second. I should have done that on this occasion, too. When I walked in it took a few moments to be greeted, not a huge deal by any means. When we were acknowledged it was very friendly. My partner and I both ordered the Mac N' Cheese sandwich and the regular tomato soup. With two meals and two regular drinks it came up to around $20, so pretty much the price I was expecting for this café type eatery. Everything was clean and neat in the restaurant, but it was too loud for me. The music was turned up pretty high, but that could be the staff on duties preference and could change from shift to shift. The food came pretty quickly and everything seemed to be fresh. The tomato soup was extremely bland and tasted fake. I hate to say this, but I honestly believe you could get better soup out of a can! I was so disappointed. Even my boyfriend who could literally eat anything didn't seem very impressed. The sandwiches were the redeeming factor. The bread was excellent, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. It was a decently filled sandwich. It was quite rich. The reason I give this restaurant three stars instead of two is because my partner seemed to really enjoy himself and would like to return. Next time I will build my own sandwich and order the caprese salad. This café deserves a second chance. The soup is a huge disappointment for someone who has tried the classic tomato soup a thousand different ways. The sandwiches were decent and are what is worth coming back for. It is a possibility that I just ordered the wrong thing and that I will find something on the menu that I will truly enjoy. My advice, just don't order the soup and give the sandwich an honest try.

When I heard about this place, I thought it was the dumbest idea ever. I mean a place that serves a grilled cheese sandwich? It's the easier type of food to cook at home, just throw in a couple of buttered bread along with cheese on pan and cook it, eat it within minutes. But a friend insisted for me to give the place a try and they sure have decent options on the menu, many of them listed that I would never think of making own sandwiches at home. I decided to order 'Grilled deli' - I was pleased with the way how it looked, took a bite and that was definitely the bite to die for. I couldn't stop eating until I took the last bite, that was the most depressing ever. They cooked it so perfect, the roast beef, cheese, spicy chips inside the sandwich. NOM NOM I am definitely going back very soon, I don't think I'd ever cook a boring grilled cheese sandwich at home again. Good-bye, boring grilled cheese sandwiches. Hello, Tom+Chee!

What's not to love about a grilled cheese sandwich? Tom + Chee really got it right with this one. To date, I've tried the Pep+Chee, Beef+Cheddar, Grilled Mac & Cheese and, of course, just the regular old grilled cheese. I have loved every single one of them. Not being a huge fan of regular tomato soup, I found the creamy tomato basil to be fantastic for dipping and have even found myself scraping the bowl a few times. The service has also always been great--we once had a groupon, but once I got to the register I couldn't pull it up on my phone. The cashier was extremely patient while I had to reinstall the app. On a different occasion, they accidentally messed one of our sandwiches up, but they caught the mistake before we ever received the food and they threw in a free Smore (which was, by the way, FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC). The ONLY negative thing I could possibly say about this place is that the inside seems a little sloppily put together and I'm not a huge fan of the chalkboard menu, but really--who cares when you're chowing down on a sandwich filled with cheese? Certainly not me.

It was so so and I don't think I'd return. Even the kids said "we could have made this at home". I was looking forward to the creamy tomato soup however, it was missing creamy and seasoning. The mac-n-cheese was interesting but not to the level others describe it. We did enjoy the service. Staff was friendly and helpful.

First of all, I love the area. It's so quirky. I love the concept-what a great idea! Grilled cheese and tomato soup day was my favorite in school, and I was so psyched to have a grilled cheese with good cheese. They are also open Sundays, which turned out to be rare in Louisville. We had tried to find a BBQ place and 4 places were closed, but I'm so happy they were. I ended up having the baked macaroni grilled cheese-because how often are you offered that-and the creamy tomato soup. The sandwich was awesome, the soup was ok but needed more seasoning or something. I also had the mint julep grilled doughnut which was amazing. I miss it already.

The marriage of melted cheese and toasted bread is a union that no man can speak ill about. Bread provides an excellent resting place for a gooey cheese as it fills the voids from all the popped yeast bubbles. Quite simply, a grilled cheese is the best two-ingredient sandwich ever. That is why when I heard that a new restaurant opened up that just serves grilled cheese and it's delicious sidekick tomato soup I had to try it. TOM + CHEE as in tomato soup and grilled cheese is an affordable and yummy alternative to heating up a pan and making your own lunch. TOM + CHEE definitely has a chain restaurant vibe to it right down to the unfortunate mini strip mall where they chose to set up shop. You know the one on Bardstown Road, which anchors Sapporo? TOM + CHEE is also an exercise in decision-making. Their hand written chalkboard menu runs from the front door to almost the back of the building and instead of making you run laps to see ALL that they have to offer, they give you a printed tri-fold menu, which you will stare at and read like a novel. Choices can become a bad thing when it's that overwhelming. You can choose to: build your own, order one with "fancy" ingredients (meaning meat and such), add chips on it, make it a combo or add just a soup dipper and for the experimental foodie- add a grilled cheese donut. You heard me right. It was on an Adam Richman Man V. Food Nation episode and the Today Show claimed it as one of the best sandwiches in America. The same America with the highest obesity rate in the world. Okay, okay. I'm not trying to be a hater. I even like the place so I digress. I had the Italian, which is comprised of pepperoni, ham, mozzarella and salt & vinegar potato chips all in between sourdough bread. I added a cup of tomato soup that ALSO comes in three varieties. I chose the chunky tomato basil. The sandwich was really great. I never thought of putting chips on my sandwich before and the addition of those feather light crunchy chips with that pungent vinegar kick was pretty amazing. The tomato soup wasn't as impressive and reminded me of a thick pizza sauce. The ingredient combinations for the "Fancy" grilled cheeses are enticing enough to bring me back and I have to try one of those donuts, I just hafta. I calculated that if I go there everyday for lunch, it would take me the next month to try everything they have to offer. Maybe the place should be called TOM + CHOOSE? Sandwiches- Thumbs uppity up Chances are the choices will overwhelm you- Thumbs up Chances are the choices will make you a repeat customer- Thumbs up

Delicious food, great service, very reasonably priced. Felt the need to share an experience there. I came in and was waiting in line behind one person. The computer system was being rebooted, which was told to me very courteously. The wait was minimal, sometime between 5 and 10 minutes. My order was put in and while waiting, the gentlemen behind the counter came to tell me that he had upgraded my order due to my wait at no additional charge. That kind of great service seems rare in this world, A+.

This place is great for lunch or a snack. A 1/2 grilled cheese and soup is the perfect portion. I got the mushroom and swiss on rye and creamy tomato soup. It was decent but could have been more flavorful. The service is quick and friendly.

This is a very interesting take on the simple, yet staple grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. The options are all enticing and it honestly was hard for me to choose just one sandwich even after I looked at the menu like 5 times online before we drove there. I ended up getting one of their potato chip grilled cheese sandwiches (totally up my ally). The Italian features salt & vinegar chips, w/ pepperoni, ham, and mozzarella on sourdough. I also ordered a bowl of creamy tomato basil soup. My husband ordered the highly recommended Grilled Mac n Cheese sandwich w/ a tomato soup dipper. The dipper is an excellent idea b/c some people just need enough soup for dipping and don't need to eat an entire bowl. (like me), and for only $1, it's even more perfect! Everything was good and hit the spot. I definitely recommend getting a soup w/ your sandwich and not just a sandwich b/c nothing is as satisfying as dipping your buttery, crunchy sandwich into warm, tangy tomato soup! It really brought all of the flavors and textures together. We had to try the famous Grilled Cheese Donut w/cheddar cheese. It was delicious and the cheese complimented the sweet, crispy donut well. Next time we want to try the Blueberry version. The service was good and our food came in a timely manner. Definitely recommended also if you have friends/relatives in town b/c I'm sure they'd love try this delicious twist to a favorite, plus it's located along Bardstown which has a fun mix of artsy coffee shops, dessert spots, and shops to explore.

I was not disappointed, but it was only a good grilled cheese sandwich, not the second coming of Christ. Maybe I would have felt differently if I had got one of those doughnut sandwiches.

Love their sandwiches and desert sandwiches. Someday I am gonna try the 50 donut sandwich challenge. Have been trying to eat the blue cheese chili, but every time I go in they are already out. Either it is super great or they dont make enough. As for the tomato soup of the "Tom Chee" name, I am not of fan. I liked there

Love all the different combinations of grilled cheese. It is super fun and you can build your own as well. Soups are good too. You can add any veggies you want on a printed sandwich for .50 extra. Oh yeah!

I wanted to love this place as much as a I love a good Grilled Cheese. My wife, daughter, and I all got ourselves a basic grilled cheese (mine with bacon) and my wife got the tomato soup. The verdict? None of us was too impressed with the Grilled Cheese, all of which appeared to have been tossed on a grill with a 1/4 inch of grease on top. The sandwiches were greasy in feel, taste, and texture were mediocre at best. My wife said her soup was okay, but not great, more like Campbells than good restaurant tomato soup. We might try it again, chalking this up to a bad day, but none of us was eager to return.
