Oftentimes I am scoffed at by peers when, in response to the question, "what's your favorite restaurant in the city?" I answer, "The Fish House/Cafe Beignet." I get it. With so many amazing establishments to choose from, ranging in price levels from $ - $$$$, it may seem unexpected that this seafood place in the middle of Louisville is my "number one." Aside from the menu(s) being perfectly priced, the consistency of quality, and the constant availability of those delightful beignets, there is also the ever-important customer service to consider. These guys genuinely care about your experience ... and you will never leave unsatisfied. They run an excellent business and restaurant. I have enjoyed every single meal I've eaten here, and you can trust me--I used to be the duchess! (I was devastated on the day of which the title was taken from me [I have way more than 9 check-ins here but apparently there's been some technical glitch]). It's one of the very best places in the city to eat, and I would recommend it to anyone not yet fortunate enough to have tried it. YUM!

Great little spot for some home style fare. Nothing fancy, decor is awesome, what look to be old family photos and such scattered around. After you come through the front door make an immediate left just past the cooler to the ordering area. There are coolers with beer and sodas to choose from. Home baked cookies and brownies sit in a small case to the left of the register. Menu is on the back wall, after you order to the right is the area for utensils and condiments. Grab what you need and find a seat. If you are going to sit outside let the person who took your order know so they can mark it on the ticket as the food is made to order and delivered to you. The scrod sandwich on white was great, fish had good seasoning and was nice and hot! Fries were perfect, I mixed up some tartar and katsup for a seafood pink sauce that was awesome on the sandwich and fries. Got a west 6th amber to go with.........this was a good ass meal. I really wanted to try the beignets (pronounced "ben-yays" for the neewbies) but figured the com o would be enough. It was filling but not over the top, just enough. The slaw was good, a little too sweet for me so I got about half way through and had to stop. Over all this is an awesome spot for some great food. I'll be back for some beignets this weekend when they do their Beignets Cafe (Saturday & Sunday breakfast brunch)

The Fish House/Café Beignet is a great spot for brunch! I absolutely love their potato pancakes. They're like mini seasoned hash browns. So good! They're served with sour cream and apple sauce for dipping. I prefer to go with ketchup, but the sour cream is awesome too! They also have really great skillet potatoes and their omelets are great. I'm not sure how many eggs they use, but it has to be like five! They're so filling I couldn't even finish mine! We opted to try the plain beignets this past trip, but next time we hit up this spot I'm going with the beignets du jour for sure! The daily menu board boasted Butterfinger beignets on this trip, and I've seen posts about other delicious specialties like a red velvet beignet. Yum! The location is great and there's plenty of parking. We live close, so we ride our bikes over and there's plenty of room to chain them. We haven't tried the lunch menu yet, but I'm looking forward to return trips to try out some more of their menu.

Never thought we find a highly reviewed seafood place in Louisville....very limited parking in the lot but lots of street parking, very old school looking place once you walk in....it's a self serve place, relatively cheap and it the seafood was good but not the best I had....it's fried seafood as we got the seafood platter, the seafood tasted fresh but did not blow my mind....ordered the potato pancake which was just hashbrowns -___- I should have asked what they were first, got the cinnamon beignets which was okay, basically fried dough covered with cinnamon and whatever other topping they had

What a weird place. Not charming weird, and not bad weird... Just weird. They have those concrete, circular tables in the restaurant, that you find covered in bird poop in peoples' backyards. But that's just one sitting area. The other sitting area has small wooden tables. There really aren't that many places to sit, unless it's nice weather and you can sit outside. So if you go on a Friday during Lent and the weather isn't nice, well then you're up a creek. With that said, I love this place. Really good food for a great price. I got a fish dinner (fish, 2 sides) and a beignet dessert for $13. And it was plenty of food. The fish was good enough to eat on its own. Really nice season on it. But the jalapeño tartar sauce takes it to another level. I even began eating my fries with it. That tartar was remarkable. Got the potato pancake thing. Solid option. I'd like to try some other sides. I don't see the hype with the potato pancake, but I did like them. Went with the recommended beignet for dessert. I saw people posting that they have different flavors. They didn't tonight, so I don't know if that's a weekend thing? Either way - didn't matter. Hard to beat deep-fried batter that's been covered in powdered sugar. If you're concerned about seating, call ahead and reserve a table. It really is a great place to eat, though. Fantastic food. Really good price. Can't wait to go back.

So, yep, I've now been to The Fish House twice within one week. Not really sure why it took so long for me to try this spot out, especially considering it's less than five minutes away from my house and I pass it a few times a week. It was my culinary monkey on my back. But last weekend I finally got to check out the Cafe Beignet side of the restaurant with brunch. It was so good that tonight I went back to frequent The Fish House. For brunch, a friend and I split the trio of beignets, potato pancakes and the catfish dinner -- because why not. And since it was Valentine's Day we also got the beignet du jour, a heart-shaped red velvet beignet with sprinkles. The beignets were more dense than some of the others I've had, but they were still delightful puffs of sweet breakfast deliciousness. The potato pancakes were like small rounds of hashbrowns, smaller than latkes. Dipping them in apple sauce was delightful. And then the catfish. I'm a big fan of catfish, and this is the best catfish I've eaten in Louisville. The skin was crunchy and not at all soggy (as I've experienced elsewhere), and the fish was moist and fried to perfection -- no weird gray mush of fish. The fish dinners come with two filets, fries and coleslaw. I love the spice they put in the fries, which give them a bit of a kick. The coleslaw was delectable as well. And to round out the meal, I got a mug of chicory coffee. And then tonight, I went back to pick up more catfish for me and scrod sandwiches for my boyfriend and his sister, along with more beignets. It is Fat Tuesday after all. The fish was just as good as it was on Saturday, and my guy and sis were happy as well. On both occasions, the service was exemplary. The man working the register on Saturday took the time to explain the menu to us and show us where the self-serve coffee and cutlery is. And then when I went in tonight, I only had to wait about five minutes between putting in my order and walking out the door with it. Oh, Fish House, I'm a fan!

Great place for fish and fries, and even better for weekend breakfast! Decent beer choice as well.

Southern Comfort. Food was freshly made to order. Quiet clean gentle atmosphere. Large portions. Staff kind and even a pat on the back. Welcoming feeling

Adore this place-the owner has such a great personality and will tell you all about his restaurant. We go here because they have gluten free fried fish-it is made with cornmeal. Good portions-good people-clean restaurant and pretty quick to come out when you order. Their coleslaw is pretty standard but they add enough seasoning to make it taste good, fries are the thicker cute. You can get all your own sauces which is nice so you aren't waiting for the wait staff to come back by and bring you more while you are salivating! They make their own special jalapeno tartar sauce-I do not like tarter period so I do not eat it but Jason seems to enjoy it. We have had breakfast here and it comes out fast and hot. It's your basic breakfast food but they do a good job. Prices are reasonable for the amount you get, you can choose between different fish. They also have shrimp, scallops etc. Parking can be a pain; we have to park in the neighboring general store next to The Fish House. Worth a try if you are looking for good fried fish and other types of seafood.

Scrod sandwich combo. A very nicely fried fish, which I believe had a cornmeal breading. The fries had a seasoning which was great because it eliminated the need for ketchup. The jalapeno tartar sauce was good, but I didnt detect any heat to it. The interior reminded me of those old seaside shacks in New England. Need to come back for the brunch and beignets.

I had not heard about this place and decided to have lunch one day when I was in the area. It was great. The fish sandwich was overflowing with fresh flakey scrod perfectly breaded with a cornmeal base. Seafood chowder was house made with great flavor and just the right amount of peppery heat. We came back a second time for dinner and it was just as good! Decor is simple and they focus on what they do best. We may become regulars!

Great place for fried fish and shrimp. The catfish was awesome and the fried green tomatoes hit the spot. The atmosphere is very unconventional but the staff was helpful and friendly.

I was drawn in by the name. On Sundays, they close at 2 PM. I ordered a fish sandwich. The wheat bun was white, and the staff said that is what was in the packaged, labeled bag. How strange! The food was a good size. I substituted the fries for a beignet. The taste was not unique. I was not impressed with the beignet.

  • Mark K.

Good seafood with a hometown feel. This is a small place tucked away in a neighborhood. Menu is simple. We all had the fried shrimp with Scrod (code). Fish and shrimp were clean and good in size. Definitely a surprise find. We would come back.

I've eaten at both cafe beignet and the Fishhouse many times and have never been disappointed; food is consistently good, priced are great for the amount of food you get, and the service is the best. My fave Fishhouse items are scrod and shrimp, Mac-and-cheese, onion rings (which are hand cut and breaded, not frozen), and the coleslaw. The chowder and tomato soup are incredible. Green River Style is the only way to go and the homemade tarter sauce is awesome. At cafe beignet, I recommend the potato cakes (try them with applesauce and sour cream), an egg-in-a-whole, piggies, and of course...beignets! The special beignets on the weekends are killer, especially pumpkin spice. Just don't wear black when you go:)

  • James C.

Scrod! Who knew! Well it's Cod or whitefish but regardless it's prepared wonderfully seasoned. Very good friend seafood place. Friendly, down to earth owner. Had the seafood platter with Scrod, clams, shrimp and friend oysters. Amazing! This is a cool spot in the Highlands neighborhood, def check it out.

Very good and very fresh fish and seafood in the unlikely place. The service is always friendly and fast. Great place for lunch.

Yum!!! We just happened to stumble on this. Great fish sandwiches and great beignets, too. Eat first and order fresh beignets when you are done. And yes, the jalepeno tarter sauce is that good!

    (4)
  • David K.

Steaming hot and fresh fish sandwiches. The homemade tarter sauce is the perfect condiment to the fish and fries. After I saw a few of the hot beignets hit the tables I then knew the heavenly pastry was going home with me. I was not disappointed.

I've been here on multiple occasions for breakfast and dinner, but recently went for lunch with some coworkers. We were all impressed with our lunches. One of the best parts about this business is the service. They are truly exceptional at that. On my latest trip, my party of 5 was trying in earnest to find a table big enough for all of us, and the man at the register (I think he's the owner) insisted on trying to help us out in finding a table. Adam is also always friendly when we're there. While the fish is good (and so is the mac and cheese! It has dill!), my favorite meal here would be the breakfast. The menu is expansive, the beignets are top notch, and there's not too many places around that can make an exceptional egg in a hole. My only complaint is trouble in finding parking and a spot to sit, but that just tells you how popular they are!

  • Javier G.

Tastes good, reasonable prices for seafood, good portions. I had the scrod.

    (4)
  • Amber C.

So fun, and so good! The shrimp was extra meaty, the breading on the scrod had great seasoning, the fried oysters were excellent, the cole slaw was creamy and had a nice flavor, and the jalapeño tartar sauce is amazing! The service was quick and welcoming. The other patrons were friendly and helpful to this newcomer. :)

My first trip to Fish House and can't wait to go back. I'm a displaced Louisvillian hiding in Dallas. When I come back to Lville I search for a good fish sandwich and found it here. I ordered the classic white fish on wheat with fries and slaw. I coupled that with a cold Stella and all was right with the world. The location itself sits on a corner and is no frills but does have outdoor seating. You order from the counter and they'll bring your food. Oh did I mention the jalapeño tarter sauce??? Yum!! Highly recommend.

  • Denise H.

I liked the neighborhood feel about this place. The owner took our order and was very friendly. I don't like fish, and missed breakfast hours, so my choices were limited. I had a baked potato and the tomato soup. Both were good. I wasn't disappointed, but I probably won't go back next time I'm in Louisville.

My review is for my breakfast, Cafe Beignet experience and not a The Fish House experience. it's the same restaurant, just named two ways. The decor is similar to a New Orleans restaurant, hence the specialty item, the Beignet which is a New Orleans staple food item. As we walked in, I wasn't sure it was a seat yourself or wait experience. It's actually fast casual. You order and then they bring your food to you, wherever you choose to sit. I ordered 3 beignets for $2.95 with an a la carte order of home fries. The beignet was so hard that i couldn't cut it with the plastic fork. So, I ended up picking it up and making a mess. Not to mention that I had on black. The home fries were too burnt for my liking. I think that the culprit from both menu items being below satisfaction, was the grease... maybe it was in need or changing or maybe it was the temperature of the fryer. I also noticed that they limit the soda refills to one, which wouldn't be a big deal if the cup wasn't so small and the price was less than the $1.95 that I paid.

I have not had fish and chips in years... this place is amazing! Delicious, quality gluten free food. Worth the four hour drive from St Louis!

Fish is the best in Louisville! Way better then Mike Linnig's. They have really yummy jalapeño tartar sauce. I highly recommend.

Love the green river style and the tartar sauce, hush puppies make me eat more than i should. Prices are good for a no frills clean atmosphere. Yeah Im hooked will go back time and time again.

I love this place! The fish tastes fresh. They keep it simple on the menu. The owner is always there when we come in, and he's super cool, treats you like family! I am picky about where I choose to dine more than once, always epicurious, but you better deliver good food and service. This place has both. Super casual and homey- no frills no bullshit, but just a nice simple dining experience. Decent prices for the quality. Southern hospitality. I will come back again and again when I'm in the mood for seafood!

One of our favorite places! Down to earth people that give you great portions with a smile! Always on our list during Lent and it's fun to sit outside when the weather is warm.

  • Dixon M.

I love this place. It's very down home, and not cheap, but serves some of the best fish and chips I have had anywhere. It can be crowded at peak times, but they always manage to provide friendly, quick service. Fish house offers a variety of seafood: scrod, catfish, tilapia, haddock, shrimp, oysters and clams. I'm partial to the haddock. An added benefit is that they serve freshly brewed iced tea.

    (5)
  • Corey S.

Good cheap eats for breakfast... beignet was more dense than I remember from New Orleans, pig in a hole and andouille sausage we're flipping awesome for a dollar fifty each! Good chicory coffee (serve yourself style), order food at the counter - very casual.

  • Aaron S.

I have been going to the Fish House since I moved here. It's just a great, non pretentious place that knows exactly how to master their craft. I go with their scrod sandwich on rye for a regular lunch, but brunch is where this little place really shines. Latkes, egg in a basket, andouille sausage, and their wonderful beignets are a great way to start a weekend day off.

  • Mary B.

Wandered in late one Saturday night. I was seeking some of their famous beignets and my friend a good cup of joe. Coffee is strong (chicory) but she liked it. Wasn't too impressed with the beignets not as fluffy and wonderful as New Orleans originals but still sweet and hit the spot. The owner was so friendly though and tried to give us our money back since the beignets didn't come out right he said. Atmosphere is neat with giant glass windows.. almost feels like you're in some little hole-in-the-wall place on a pier. Will be back to try brunch. Small place.

The food was out really fast and I had plenty of time to eat during my work lunch even though I eat slow.

Best land-locked fried seafood I've ever had. Here with the family, we each got a different dish and share. Oysters, fish and clams are all outstanding.

  • Megan F.

I'm not usually a fan of fried anything, so even after hearing and reading great reviews about this spot I never thought I'd even end up going here. But, sometimes strange things happen and I'm surprised: I'm a fan of fried fish sandwiches and The Fish House. I'm glad I've waited the 25 years and however many days of my life to try a friend fish sandwich cause the fresh scrod one battered up in their famous green river style was the right one. If you wanna balance out the healthy/unhealthy scales grab yours on the wheat or multigrain, nice touch Fish House. Tip yourself over to the unhealthy side with some really really southern style sweet, sweet tea. But, hey you can balance it back out by ordering the unlisted option in between the sandwich and combo: one fish sandwich and one side, not two. Added bonus: the owner is amazingly nice and polite. It's clear he cares about his business by asking customers for their names, remembering, repeating and even helped to create a spot for us to sit during a busy lunch rush where the restaurant was packed.

GREAT seafood. Best service I've ever had, at any restaurant anywhere. Staff was unbelievably friendly. Felt like family or like I was at home. Had the tilapia dinner with slaw and a side of Mac and cheese. Tilapia was great, I recommend the tartar sauce as well. Mac and cheese was a little small but also very good, I would get it again. Best place I ate during my two week stay in Louisville.

Ohhhhhhhh, Fish House. How I love thee. Let me count the ways... So, pre-vegan days this was a weekend morning haunt for me. I like what Jason says: "This place is pretty special". It's small and family owned. Walk up, order off the menu on the wall, have a sit down and brunch comes to you on a disposable plate. But don't let informality fool you. They spend all the extra love, energy and $$ on deliciousness and quality. First, best omelette in town, in my opinion. Never, ever once have I had one that was less than stellar. Second, the chickory coffee is so strong that even my three-cups-a-day tolerance for caffeine isn't enough to keep my hands from shaking. Third, the potato pancakes. Yep, I bet your bottom dollar they're fried in bacon grease and the crispiest, most perfect comfort food on the breakfast menu. Next up, dude, they serve 'Egg In a Hole' here. If you don't know, this is where you cut a hole in the center of the toast, drop it in the skillet, crack an egg in the center and fry it over medium. It's a breakfast novelty from grandma's kitchen. Unbeatable! Last, of course not least, are the beignets. Yeast dough. Fried. Covered in butter and powdered sugar. Served 3 at a time, buy a single one for a light day or try the special which might be Turtle, Bearclaw, often drizzled in something or topped with whipped cream. Bring the kids, the family, the whole crew, seat yourselves, and make some memories. This is the spot. Breakfast on weekends only, though!

Yum! Happened upon this place and thoroughly enjoyed it! Fast friendly service and good food. Had fish sandwich's... Very good. Portion of fish was huge and fries were delicious!! Good selection of cheap bottled beers. Cheap but yummy dinner.

This was my first time here. I was greeting promptly and the guy upfront explained everything meal I had questions about. He was very nice. The food was great. I had the fist tacos with cottage fries. Which are basically thinly sliced fried potatoes. So wonderful! I loved it! Very yummy

Stopped in for breakfast. We had the ham & cheese omelette, potato cakes, & beignets (of course). Everything was fantastic. Omelette and potatoes were heavy/rich, but not overly so. Flavors were great. Beignets were spot on. Use the applesauce that they give you. I was hesitant, but it was a nice compliment. Chickory coffee was good too.

    (5)
  • Kelly J.

This was some of the best food we ate all weekend! I had a veggie omlette and potato pancakes. OMG the potato pancakes were to die for! I could eat them all day! I'm still dreaming about them. I've never had chickory coffee before, and it was delicious. I wonder if I can get it in a K-Cup. ;)

Excellent unassuming meal in a very relaxed setting. Highly reccomend for a relaxed weekend morning for a taste of Louisiana.

The Fish House/ Cafe Beignet is not a beautiful place, but they have the best beignets this side of the Mississippi and Community Coffee with chicory. I felt like I was back in Nola. We tried the regular powdered sugar beignet and (if you can believe it) a sweeter one-with, I think strawberry purée of some kind. They were awesome. The sausage links are also yum! The guy behind the counter was super nice and helpful. I felt very welcomed. And it's also super cheep!

  • Jason M.

This place is pretty special...a small, awkwardly located and often crowded place, this is a true dive to enjoy. They have some delicious breakfast, wonderful seafood and magnificent beignets. I prefer to dine in for breakfast, but seem to always do carry out for lunch and dinner. Two egg in a holes, some piggies and potato pancakes...what a great day to meet the morning and nurse that Sunday hangover? Don't forget to add a beignet or ten to that order. Trust me...they're yummy. Their seafood is just awesome, using their default "Green River style", which their menu says is a "peppery corn meal breading", but you can request a milder breading. Try the sampler if you like a bit of everything...though it is missing a scrod filet. Stay away during Lent, or you will wait for a long...long...long...long time...

It's a local restaurant that provides the best service by the owner. The fried fish, fried potato and coleslaw have a unique taste !!! Also a jalapeño tartar sauce is a special only here. I highly recommend to try.

Fish House was a wonderful place for dinner! Had the tilapia sandwich with hush puppies and it tasted really good! I enjoyed the hospitable atmosphere and the owner was very nice. After dinner, we had beignets (which I didn't expect to have). They were a delicious after-dinner treat that everyone enjoyed. Great seafood restaurant in Louisville!

This was our first visit. It was okay. It's kinda of a hole in the wall with a friendly atmosphere. It's obvious there are a lot of regulars. Coffee which was great was serve yourself. Order at the counter, but the food was delivered. It has a picnic type feel, with food served on paper plates and plastic silverware. I don't like to go sit down at a restaurant myself and eat with cheap plastic silverware. Personal preference maybe, but it turns me off of whatever may be on my plate. They were out of oysters which was my husbands choice. So it really didn't matter what he got after that, it wasn't going to be what he wanted. Focusing on my meal which consisted of 2, maybe it was 3 beignets. They were absolutely fabulous! It was probably 3, but they were inhaled so quickly surely there was only 2! They were worth a visit alone. This came with a choice of two additional items, which I had their egg in the hole that was served in sandwich style white bread and hash browns. Neither were anything worth going back for. Meal was fairly inexpensive. I'd like to return to try the fish. Having had just breakfast, I'd rate those beignets and A+ and everything else had a definite C.

I had extremely high hopes for this place. I wouldn't say that my hopes were completely shattered, but they definitely weren't met. The service was great. The outdoor seating was nice. But, considering how well known this place is, I expected better when it came to the food. It was very simple stuff that I could make easily at home and was priced much higher than necessary. I would consider giving it a second try, but my first time was just okay.

Best fried fish this side of Mississippi. I eat here regularly and the Haddock is hands down the best you can buy anywhere. Add to that the cole slaw that has a nice "bite" to the flavor and the jalapeño tarter sauce and you have a meal you will order over and over again. Sweet tea is very good as well. Family run business, friendly, and they aim to please.

Disclaimer: I've never had a beignet before. However, the beignets here tasted very good and are so cheap! I came for Sunday brunch and had 3 beignets with a side of 2 eggs. This cost me around $6-7. The beignets were covered with too much powdered sugar but that wasn't an issue because I just shook the excess off. They were light and airy.. similar to fried dough but in ball form. I'll try to update my review once I try something else. In terms of atmosphere, Cafe Beignet is a total dive. You order at the counter and they'll bring the food to you. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. But the quick, friendly service and low prices make it a good spot.

Breakfast review: came here before hiking bernheim forest. Beautiful day and good breakfast. Everything is fried. Potatoes pancakes were very good. So was beignet. Omelette was nothing special. great outdoor seating. Will be back.

This place rocks. I've done weekend brunch here, seating can be hit or miss, but everything else totally makes up for it. Beignets are delightful, potato pancakes are a microcosm of everything that is right in the world, and you can leave satisfied for under $10. Haven't tried dinner yet, but it is on the list.

I called the fish house on the phone about catfish and after he priced the catfish he stated that it was 495 I replied I did not know catfish was so high and he said yes but you can get it cheaper somewhere else it is 495 here and then I said is that just the fish and he said well that's what you asked for then I said let me call you back and without a goodbye he hung up very abruptly I thought that was very rude needless to say if I was going to call them back I am NOT now

I was welcomed in and the food was amazing. I had fried pickles, potato pancakes, and the chicken sandwich. Fried pickles were amazing. Potato pancakes were great. The chicken sandwich was 4 chicken fingers on 2 slices of wheat bread with nothing else. The chicken was phenomenal. But I was hoping there would be vegetables on the chicken sandwich. There also seems to be a lack of sauces. The bread seemed to be store bought. The other knock on this place is they use styrofoam for serving.

Before moving to Louisville sight-unseen, I studied my future neighborhood thoroughly on google maps/street view. I was immediately dismissive of The Fish House, not because of the look of the place, but because I don't really like fish. I'll eat sushi on occasion and fried fish is okay (I mean, duh, it's FRIED), but I won't seek it out. Then I arrived in town, saw the sign for beignets, and decided that I would definitely be giving The Fish House a try. And yes, the beignets are tasty. So are other breakfast items, like the simple but delicious egg-in-a-hole (so buttery!) and the savory potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. However, the real surprise here is that I like the fish. I met a friend for lunch and she let me try a bite of her catfish. I had ordered the chicken sandwich. My mistake. Sure, the chicken sandwich was good. But the breading used on the chicken could not stand up to the Green River style breading used on the fish. Although I see plenty of reviews have mentioned it, I have no idea what characterizes Green River style. I can describe what I tasted though: a breading that was perfectly crunchy and uniform, with plenty of flavor but without any greasy quality. I have yet to return for lunch, but when I do I will be ordering the catfish in spite of my usual tastes. Any place that can sell me on fish has definitely earned five stars. As if that's not enough to love about the place, the family that runs it is warm and friendly. I particularly enjoy the napkin dispensers with family photos. You get the sense you've been invited into their own dining room. And being served good food by nice people makes it seem even better, doesn't it?

I had a fish sandwich to go few months ago and it was excellent. The creamy jalapeno sauce for it was great and it was plenty of food by itself. This last time I had the nawlins style breakfast and it was incredible and cheap. Now that's the breakfasts of champions! My fave was definitely the blueberry beignets that were retarded good. And huge portions. And cheap as hell. Best combo ever. The egg in a blanket or whatever that toast with egg in the middle thing is called was AWESOME! Nice and buttery and flavorful and did I say awesome. Super duper sad that they don't stay open til 3 on Sundays as I am super pathetically lazy on weekends and like to stay out late and sleep even later. But 2:30 isn't too bad :)

Please, I am begging you, do not wait to go to this place as long as I did. I passed this place for one whole year without going in. After I finally tried their breakfast, I regretted every single time I judged this glorious restaurant. Yes, it is creepy looking outside. Yes, the name is "The Fish House". Lastly, YES, THEY SERVE BREAKFAST! And holy cow, is it good! Side bar: the décor (if you can really call it that) is hilarious. A bag of golf clubs in one corner, a life-size nutcracker in another, and random magazines and books that were never recycled in another. It is endearing though, in a "we just love this place like we love our own house" way. After taking all of that in, go straight to the counter. Choose the "deal of the day" or pick the beignets with two sides. Or don't, I guarantee whatever you pick will be good. I highly recommend the potato pancakes, and second to that, the andouille. Oh, get the blue-berry beignets. Man, my mouth is watering now. Just go already.

Hubby and I made it here on Saturday at the end of the breakfast hour (noon)...darn. But they still serve the beignets, so we stayed for lunch anyways. Although I am not a huge fan of fried seafood (except oysters!!!), but since everyone seems to rave about them here, I had to order the seafood platter to try a bit of everything: 3 fried oysters, 2 fried shrimp, 3 pieces of fried scrod, and a pile of clam strips all piled on top of a pile of fries for $13.95. The oysters were not large, but fresh, juicy and left me wanting more. The shrimp were sizable and battered, but I have had more flavorful ones elsewhere. The fish were thick, chunky, and actually had juice dripping out of the crunchy crust!!! mmmmmm....that's good fish! The clam strips and fries were really not worth mentioning compared to the oysters and fish. And I had to try their clam chowder. I have been known to eat bowl after bowl of good chowda while on Cape Cod. I have not had comparable chowda anywhere else. Did the Fish House version measure up? Somewhat. While the flavor was great with lots of clams, but it is not so thick an oyster cracker can stand on its side in it. It also did not contain any bacon. However, it does contain chunks of fish. It is like a cross between a clam chowder and fish chowder. I will still be back for more for the great flavor. Lastly, the beignets and the fried pie (yes, we sampled EVERYTHING). The hubby just loved the fried cherry pie so much he had no words to describe it. The beignets were made of the same dough as the pie dough: crispy and chewy at the same time. Since this is our first beignet, we could only say: "yes, we liked it."

Best brunch value in town, scientifically verifiable. The pablano omelete gives me mana. Their buttery take on the egg-in-a-hole is an inexpensive and delicious caloric nightmare. Brunch for two clocks in around $15, beignets included.

My daughter kept begging me to stop in and take me to her to this place. I was leery, thinking it was too expensive. Nope. Not at all. I had gotten her a clam dinner and me a fish dinner, with some extras and of course we couldn't walk out with two orders of beignets. This is where I sat next to an older couple, as I waited for my take out order to surprise my daughter with, and they were telling me how wonderful the place was...and they whispered in my ear that they were from my area of town and told me about Passtime's...not that Passtime's compares to this place - two different worlds. Both good worlds living simultaneously together. It was my surprise we had gotten a gynormous amount of food for a lot less than what we'd pay at a chain store. And it was less greasy, the batter was like eating freshly cooked fish outta someone's bayou kitchen. I was dumbfounded. Rachel F. had it right - "This place is retarded good."

I did not find this fast food restaurant to be worthy of the stars. All the food is fried and one orders at the counter then finds a seat. The tables did not look clean and the cod I had was less than average. The condiment bottles sitting on the table were sticky and the beignets did not look very good. They need to clean up their act.

I grew up in Louisville and left in the 70's. While back for a visit we tried The Fish House and they serve the fish sandwich of my youth! Everything was great, good fish, good frys and friendly staff. The only con is the enclosed patio could use a good cleaning. Dust and grim on the napkin dispensers and display items. I would definitely eat here again.

Wow. Very disappointed. Scrod combination was pretty pitiful. Small pieces mostly breading and overcooked. A very few fries. Could be just a bad night but boy they have to get better. This is their basic meal and when you are not doing that well this is a problem.

I want to be clear that i'm rating Fish House not Cafe Beignet in this review. I absolutely love this joint. Not only do they offer about six different kinds of fish, (I typically just go for the fresh scrod) but they also have a multitude of delicious sides to choose from. My personal favorites are the Seafood Chowder and the Crab Pasta Salad. They also have a kick ass jalapeno tarter sauce. My only complaint is that everything is served on styrofoam plates with plastic forks and knives which taints the experience a bit for me. Regardless, the food is awesome!

Beignets, toad in the hole, potato cakes. Breakfast was homey but not greasy spoon, which is impressive for all the deep fried goodness on the menu. Service is fast and on point. All of this an so inexpensive. Come eat here. Really great food.

Visited here again for takeout. This time to pick up a bowl of some amazing homemade clam chowder. This is the best chowder I've had outside of Boston/Cambridge... Might sound odd but it's delicious! Highly recommend it. I'm not such a fan of the fried fish (but that's me overall on fried fish). The fried oysters are pretty tasty and I recommend the beignets as well.

SO FREAKING GOOD HERE. it seems sketchy driving by, parking, and sitting. but then a beignet is in your mouth and all of the bad in the world goes away. i had breakfast here a couple times. i got the bacon and cheese omelet. with a side of three beignets. they usually have different beignet specials every couple days or so, if not daily. i was trying to decide between two dishes, a bacon and cheese omelet and something with sausage and potato pancakes. but the owner threw in a a sausage and a side of potato pancake for free just because he wanted me to try it. i. ate. all. of. it. the next time im in louisville , this place is a MUST.

Just got back from dinner here-delicious. I had the Whitefish dinner with potato pancakes and the fiance had tilapia with onion rings. Both kinds of fish were awesome, as was their jalapeno tartar sauce-fiance bought some to take home. The onion rings are huge, and the potato pancakes were nice but not really something I would pay extra for next time. We were in and out in 30 min, and there was a cop car there-and you know if the cops eat somewhere it's good. I will definitely go back to try the beignets and the seafood chowder.

Review of Breakfast: Great character, definitely feels like a neighborhood place. Steady crowd at 10:30 on a Sunday morning, but not overly crowded as places such as Lynn's and Highland Morning can get. Lots of fried items on the menu. Not that the food wasn't tasty, just not many "healthy" seeming options. Beignets were very tasty as were potato pancakes. Hubby's meal of bacon omelet and home fries was average at best. But not for one thing, I may have rated a four based on my meal and the atmosphere. Thing being seeming exclusive use of disposable table wares - plates, utensils, cups, the whole nine yards. Felt some guilt about eating at a place that feeds the landfills so greatly. Would suggest they invest in some normal tableware and a dishwasher - surely this would save them some money and make for a better dining experience for the patrons and environment.

I went to the Cafe Beignet part of this place. Who knew you could get beignets and good ones outside of NOLA. The omelette was solid and was more of a stuffed egg plate but the seller here for me was the excellent blueberry beignets.

Glad I got to try out some local food while I was in Louisville. The Fish House/Cafe Beignet is what I'd call a dive restaurant. Similar to a dive bar, this small restaurant has plenty of regulars and serves delicious food at a very reasonable price. Don't expect any frills - there are maybe 3 tables for patrons in the Fish House portion of the restaurant. It's strangely divided into two areas although it really is one business. I tried the catfish after reading some of the other reviews. My mistake was ordering the dinner platter since I didn't want a catfish sandwich. The dinner platter came with two extra large pieces of catfish, a side of fries and coleslaw. Way too much food even for a big eater. If I ordered the sandwich version it was the same meal except for 1 piece of catfish with two pieces of white bread. Honestly the "sandwich" shouldn't be called a sandwich since the pieces of bread were sitting off to the side. The catfish was seasoned well and although it was fried, it wasn't the least bit greasy. Coleslaw was refreshing, not heavy on the mayo. The guy behind the counter was really friendly and helpful when I was choosing my meal. My friends tried their potato pancakes, breakfast items and beignets which I heard were tasty. Sounded interesting (lemon poppyseed beignets) but there was no way I could fit any more fried foods in my belly. A great option when Lynn's is packed (but don't expect any of the quirky decor)!

Been going here for 15 years and once in a blue moon the fried fish will be a little off, either dark, oily or overcooked. That maybe happened 2-3 times years ago but not in the last five. I attribute it to an inattentive fry cook. Tell Dave and I bet he cheerfully gets you another order. 99% of the fried cod and haddock I've had here is as good and better than I can find elsewhere and the jalapeño tartar sauce is awesome. My only regret is that I usually get two sandwiches because I like it too much. I even splurge for the pound of fish and a side of bread when I really want to get a fix.

It only looks like a shack! Today's lunch was a success, especially compared to the Cottage Inn yesterday (see my review). Just imagine, a fish sandwich with actual fish, instead of Mrs. Paul doing an imitation of the "Incredible Shrinking Woman". It contained a full, golden filet that would have made Isaac Walton smile (Bill, too). Two pups for a quarter! Crunchy, sweet, yummy, and so big we gave them names: Toby and Hector, (as in "this place has been around since Hector was a pup.") The cole slaw was generous, good, and well-behaved. We're so full, we could skip dinner tonight, but we won't.

Wow oh wow oh wow. YUM. I've been here a few times, and it's been great. The breakfast was delicious. The beignets were THE BEST! Try some original ones, those are really good. Sometimes they have specialty beignets, like Oreo, and pumpkin. So good. Definitely go here! And I'm coming back.

The Fish House/Cafe Beignet is unique in that it is two restaurants in one - a fried fish joint during the week and a pseudo-French breakfast cafe on weekend mornings. However, whether you go for Wednesday dinner or Sunday breakfast, you'll always get great food. In short, there are four things that make this place great: (1) It's local and a very Louisville kind of place, (2) the fish, (3) the jalapeño tartar sauce, and (4) the beignets. (1) Eating local is great because you get to experience the community you're eating in. I like to think that Louisville is a friendly, cozy place, and that's just what The Fish House is. Most times I've been the owner is running the register, and he really is a friendly guy; he'll genuinely ask how you're doing, talk about the local sports going on, and give you a joke to make you laugh. The atmosphere isn't particularly nice or fancy, but it's very comfortable; for example, most of the seating is surrounded by windows, and you can get a good view of some local art murals, including an awesome mural of Hunter S. Thompson, a local legend. Fried fish is also a very "Louisville" thing, which brings me to my next point. (2) I've told many people that The Fish House is the best place to get fried fish in Louisville, and fried fish is fairly big in Louisville. There are a lot of fish frys around here, but if I'm going to go anywhere for fried fish it's here. They give you very big portions, and even the cheapest fish (scrod) is very delicious - crisp on the outside but very flavorful and juicy on the inside, which is fairly hard to pull off if you've ever tried to make legit fried fish. I'd say the catfish is my favorite, but you really can't go wrong with any of the fish. And if you do order fish, then you should top it off with... (3) Jalapeño tartar sauce! I've never found jalapeño tartar sauce anywhere else, and that's probably because the people at The Fish House make it themselves. I've seen people multiple times come in just to buy whole jars of this stuff. Don't be too scared of this quirky sauce - it's really not very spicy, just has that extra flavorful kick. If you're not feeling courageous, though, you can always get their regular tartar sauce, which they also make themselves and is also very delicious. And speaking of delicious... (4) The beignets! You can only get these on the weekends, but I can't think of anywhere else in Louisville that you can get a beignet. It's hard to find beignets in the United States in general, but I've had them in several places. I'd say the best beignets in the country are at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans (and from my understanding many people would agree with me on that), and after that the next best place in the country to get beignets is The Fish House/Cafe Beignet in Louisville. It's hard to find beignets, but it's even harder to find people who do beignets right, and this place does it right. Similar to the fried fish, actually: crisp on the outside, but warm and fluffy on the inside. TL;DR: Best fried fish in Louisville, great beignets, very local, very friendly.

The prices are cheap here and the food is good. I've mostly eaten here for breakfast which is always fantastic. I ordered carry out one night for dinner. The fish was good. Not great, but for the price it was fine. Carry out was prompt and easy and the owner was friendly as always.

BREAKFAST REVIEW: I have passed this supposed Fish House, without ever the craving of a solid Fillet so I never stopped in. I was surprised to discover from other Yelpers that this place actually serves breakfast too. With Lynn's Paradise Cafe (around the corner) and Toast crowds for most breakfast joints, I was relieved to find a smaller crowd enjoying breakfast. To limit confusion these are not separate kitchens or two restaurants in one. This is one restaurant with two specialties so their idea of marketing is to list both specialties in the name. Unfortunately, only the FISH HOUSE side really shows to the street. When you walk in you will see a small alcove to the left. In this area there is a menu, daily specials, and an order taker. You will pay in advance and get a number. You will have to find a table for your group. Our group had to wait a few minutes to sit, but only because of our size not the amount of tables available. There are three rooms of tables, the main room when you walk in the back room after the kitchen, and a patio open seasonally. Once you sit, your meal will be brought to your table. Some condiments are on the table others are given with the meal. Silverware and water is located in the main room and is self service. You also have to throw away your meal remains and then someone will come behind you and wipe the table. The whole experience is very low key. The food however, is in a higher key! Our friends always mix and match so I got to try everything on their breakfast menu. The daily Blueberry Beignet was delicious. It was my first time having a (Ben-yay) as they call it. It is basically a elephant ear texture rolled up into a puff pastry shape. A delicious sweet batter nugget to be blunt. I also enjoyed the potato cakes that are traditionally served with sour cream AND applesauce. Finally, the cutest and most clever breakfast dish I have ever had is egg in the hole. Take toast, cut out the middle, add an egg. This simple dish was tasty and filling. In addition to not judging a book by its cover, you should also not expect any expensive prices. This is a perfect inexpensive breakfast for the hungry. Now to review the fish....

Fish Sandwich Review. I must be missing something.... The place is just okay in my opinion. Med. size fish, not much to brag abut. Oysters were good though. The frying grease might be a little old. Had much better fish sandwich elsewhere. However since this is my first visit, I will give another try or two....and will try their Beignet the next time. The staff however is a totally different story. They are some of the most friendly staff I've ever encountered, and no wonder people in Louisville loves this place, heck! I think part of the reason many Louisvillians dine there just because the staff make you feel like a part of extended family.

I'd been here several times for breakfast, but just went today for lunch - as good as the breakfast. Breakfast: potato cakes are really good, beignets are great, "entrees" are really good, too. Nice touch - they do have chicory coffee for the real New Orleans fans. Lunch: had a catfish sandwich, which is an enormous slab of catfish on top of two pieces of bread. The fish was excellent: perfectly cooked, with incredible cornmeal batter, just like what my grandmother always made. The fries and hush puppies are really good, too. Beignets: get some. They're great, and they serve them all the time - not just breakfast hours. (If you've never had beignets, they're fried dough cakes - like doughnuts without holes, except with a chewier, crustier texture. They're dredged in powdered sugar, too. You won't be disappointed.) Staff's always been really friendly, and the atmosphere is perfect for a laid-back fried fish/beignet place. It's a converted gas station, and the dining area is in sort of an enclosed patio - sounds weird, maybe, but it works perfectly for this place.

The Fish House does "Green-River style" fried Boston scrod and catfish with fries and cole slaw. The fish is crisp and tasty due to the unusual breading. I'm not sure I prefer it over The Fishery in St. Matthew's but it's a good fish sandwich in a town that knows fried fish, and since it's a heck of a lot closer to me than St. Matthew's that means more frequent visits are possible. The service was family-style friendly and fast. I like the slaw, too. I'll be back for a sandwich here soon. Call ahead for carry out.

First off I must admit that I do not actually eat fish, which I think speaks to the quality of the Fish House. My visits mostly occur on the weekends when Cafe Beignet is in effect because the breakfast offerings are wonderful. The beignets du jour are always delicious and the sides are excellent. I would consider the egg in a hole to be a must have, such a simple and buttery delicious treat. This place has a great atmosphere and it definitely keeps this girl coming back for more.

I have foolishly driven right by this place many times, without ever stopping. Perhaps it was the look of the place from the outside, or because fish never sounds tempting. However, one should not judge a book by its cover, and I actually really do like fish, even though I never feel in a fishy sort of mood. After hearing many good things about the Fish House/Cafe Beignet, I finally wised up and stopped in for lunch. WOW -- I should have stopped there the first time I passed by! I had a catfish sandwich, which was simply fantastic. The filet was *huge*, and despite its thickness, was still cooked perfectly with a flaky but plenty moist interior. The cornmeal breading had just the right coverage and wasn't too grainy, and perfectly seasoned. I had their potato pancakes on the side, and was very pleased with the seven little disks of fried carb goodness. However, the star of the meal, which I can barely wait to have again, was the tomato soup. This ain't no Campbell's!! Oh my good grief, it was perfect, and unlike any tomato soup I've ever had. It had, get this, actual *tomatoes* in it. Imagine, tomatoes in tomato soup. Little bite size chunks of tomato that are hot and well cooked but not at all mushy -- still enough bite to them. The soup itself was only slightly creamy (a good thing) and beautifully seasoned. If you are down to your last two dollars, spend them on the Fish House's tomato soup. I also tried a beignet and, to be honest, it was probably the least wonderful part of the meal (aside from the shamefully pedestrian bun that was under the succulent catfish, and was not eaten out of respect to the lofty quality of the fish). The beignet was still very well done, and had just the right amount of chewiness on the inside, but it was plastered in way too much heavy powdered sugar. The beignet itself was so good, it would have been delicious without any powdered sugar at all. Of course, another draw for this establishment is that it is a wonderful local neighborhood eatery that is owned, run, and populated by locals. Supporting local businesses is easy when the business is *awesome*! It's a very humble building, with extraordinary food being made, served, and enjoyed inside.

Fish sandwich, fries and coleslaw with a soda for lunch. Fish was breaded and fried on a multi-grain bun. Several pieces of fish on the sandwich. Well cooked, not greasy at all, and breading is unique with cracked pepper and cornmeal and quite tasty. Fries were awesome. Not much in the way of atmosphere. Too much styrofoam for me.

.5/21/2011 I took my family to the fish house because of the rave reviews on this site. there were no cars in the parking lot , Bad Sign. Four people were eating in the back. We ordered the fish sandwich plater, beignet, potato pan cakes, fries , mac and cheese. After about 10 mins, the food came out. The fish was over cooked to a dark brown. A nice grease taste came with it. The potato pan cakes were about the size of a silver dollar. Looked like smashed tater tot, and came with the grease taste. I've been to the Cafe Dumont in New Orleans , and had beignet , wonderful . These were like fried biscuits with so much powdered sugar they liked like small icebergs, Tasted like pure old grease. Nasty. $33.00 for a very nasty meal . Save your money....... What a sad experence.

I gave this place 4 stars purely for its fried oysters. A place that looks like a shack doesn't deter me. I have visited many a "shack" and found wonderful things inside. This is no different. My guy ordered the fish, can't remember what kind, its been a month or two. It was fried and he liked it, so it must've been good. My oysters were easily the best fried oysters I've had in Lvl so far. Just the right amount of breading, which is just barely enough to cover them and pulled out of the grease while still tender and juicy. YUMMM! They have CHICKORY!!! KOOL! I had a cup of chickory with the beignet I had for dessert. The beignet to me was a drawback. The dough was way too heavy or 'doughy". Beignets are light- like funnel cakes. Maybe overkneading? Not enough fat in the dough? Could be a number of things. We were there around lunch and they had a pretty good crowd going and the service- amongst the confusion- was friendly and down to earth.

I love the Fish House. It's green river syle breading is amazing. Everything there I have had from the clam chowder to the beignets has been delicious. The service is wonderful, since my family and I go there often the owner/Mike knows us. The best part is the atmosphere and knowing that you eating at such a Quintessential Louisville restaurant. I highly recommend.

The Saturday and Sunday breakfast is awesome, featuring an omelet of the day with beignets galore. And if you miss breakfast (get there by 1pm Saturday, 2pm Sunday) go for the fried fish, it's one of the best in Louisville!

Went here for breakfast. Very good potato cakes served with sour cream and applesauce, yum. Plenty of parking is available in an adjacent lot and the place offers an overall rustic, familial feel. Will be back to try the fish sandwich.
