We live right down the road from Sol Aztecas and go there all the time. The food is great, the margaritas are amazing, and whenever we bring our dog and sit outside, all the waiters and waitresses couldn't be nicer. The only reason I had to give it 4 stars is because of their to go service. They've messed up our pick up order several times, but other than that everything else is great.

I hate to write low rated reviews, I really do, but sometimes it is truly necessary. But hey, let's start with the good stuff, shall we? The food here is fantastic, well seasoned for "authentic" Mexican food, served hot with portion sizes truly meant for the Louisville appetite. The prices are really great for the amount and quality of food that you get. The location is fantastic with an interior that is without a bad seat in the house and really nice sidewalk tables that are pretty shady and well spaced. The alcohol is served big and cheap, with their largest margarita being well over the size of my head. No complaints there! Now, unfortunately, to the bad stuff. The service here is some of the worst I've ever experienced. I've eaten here probably five times, as my SO is a big fan of the food here, and has the patience of a saint. Typically when you walk in, whether they're busy or not, it will take several minutes to be greeted and when you are I wouldn't exactly call it "friendly". The servers can be pretty rude at times and will fight with you if your food isn't right, such as insisting that you ordered the chicken even when the people at your table are saying things like, "She never orders chicken", or "She definitely did NOT order that." which can be pretty frustrating to say the least. Also, the times that I have been here the service has been very inattentive, even to the point where my SO spilled his $16 margarita into his food and all over the table and the waitress simply never came back, so we sat there for about an hour with a huge mess on our table and inedible food, with no napkins to clean it up to add on to that. And even worse than all of that, never an apology or a thank you for coming. My main beef with this particular restaurant is the service, and I personally believe that service is of the utmost importance for the success of a business, whether it be at a food truck or at a white linen restaurant, and it is simply not met here. Overall: Wonderful food, great portions and prices and alcohol enough to really make the service almost tolerable. I do recommend this establishment if you feel patient and you are in good company. You'll definitely need to take this placed with a grain of salt (maybe around the rim of a margarita).

I am a BIG fan of this Sol Aztecas becuase of their BIG portions and freshness. My husband visit here frequently and every time we either split something or have left overs for dinner another day. I would recommend the Chimichangas or the Quesidillas. They are huge and fresh! Today I tried the Chicken Soup and was happily suprised. It had shredded chicken, fresh pico, rice, and spices. I suggest adding a dollop of sour cream on top :) I was farely hungry so opted for the bowl and planned on sharing (aka taking) some of my husbands food. I was SHOCKED when the bowl came out and it was bigger than my face. They even had to give me a bigger spoon in order to eat it! It was great warmed up 2 days later. The happy hour is great but make sure you know which day has which special. The margaritas are so-so and that is what knocked it down a star for me. Margaritas and Mexican food are like peanut butter and jelly to me - you are rated as one! Overall - give it a try (but don't set outside unless you want to be distracted by the all the Bardstown Road craziness.

Very happy with the food here! Good salsa and yummy chicken they have a chicken soup that is a very good value and it's a huge bowl with pico de gallo and cilantro in a giant bowl. Perfect margarita!

The food and margaritas were good (and heavy on the alcohol) but the service was a different story. It took at least 5 minutes to get acknowledged to ask to be seated when the place was practically empty. I got up from the table 3 times to place my order with the bartender because no one was coming over to the table. Spent the whole night swatting gnats away from the table.

Your average Mexican food. It was decent, but nothing special. We got the enchiladas rancheros which came with a mix of beef and chicken enchiladas. The meat was okay, as was the sauce. The chips and salsa were also mediocre. I got a mango margarita, which was $7, a little pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants I have been to. All in all, it was okay.

Never again! Was greeted with rude service. Sat at the bar and the bartender seemed annoyed and kept looking at his watch. Hastily served us weak drinks and hurried our tab. Left with a bad feeling, feeling more frustrated than satisfied. Will never go back.

I am only giving this place 3 stars because all I got was a Mango Margarita and ate some chips and salsa.. Met up with friends here tonight, crazy night because I ended up going to the one on the other side of Bardstown Rd. first, lol. If I ever come back to this place, which I am hoping I do (because it seems like a really nice place), I will definitely be ordering something off the menu other than a margarita. They have outdoor seating as well, which would be perfect on a not so hot night.

Met a friend there for an early dinner. Why is it that when a restaurant is slow no one pays attention to the door? Waited to be seated...finally I set myself at the bar and the bartender turned around after 5 minutes got my drink order and brought menus.. Promptly served after my friend arrived. I ordered a vegetarian combo which basically means 3 different kinds of wraps covered or filled with refried beans... it was terrible. My friend ordered something similar to mine only with meat which he said was very bland... Would have given just one star but the server was very nice and attentive.

We were seated promptly. The ambience was good, and the place was well decorated. The hot salsa had a nice kick. Our server was friendly, and our food was brought out fairly promptly and accurately. My Chicken Fajita was very bland, as were the refried beans. My wife had a couple of enchiladas in different sauces. They were okay, but also somewhat bland. After taking our order, our server seemed to lose interest. He was chatting and rolling silverware while we needed drink refills. Waiters rolling silverware while their tables flounder seems to occur in a few local Mexican restaurants, and that is VERY annoying. Roll those when it is not busy! They didn't seem to want to take our dirty dishes for a long time after we ate. Not a horrible experience overall, but with so many great Mexican restaurants in the area, I would not go back.

So grew up in southern Arizona and this was "pretty" close to the typical old-school Mexican restaurants dotting the landscape (not the swank fresh-mex places of today, but cheap food and drink that filled you up). There are differences to be clear, but not quite sure why all the negativity of late for this place, so will have to come back and try different plates. And I do not like ALL Mexican food. But after reviewing the menu, realized the combo meals here all come standard with ground beef. That could be part of the problem. Always upgrade to the beef tip or cubed pork in Verde, Colorado or specialty sauce if possible. To start, we ordered a 32 oz Mexican beer for the price of a typical 16oz and a giant, strong marg at a reasonable price (a.k.a., what you expect in a Mexican restaurant). The chips and salsa were classic. Since this was our first visit, and the combos seemed like too much food, we ordered off the a la carte menu. I got the Burrito Especiale (beef tips), ordered enchilada-style w/ a side of rice and beans (that's my move) for less than $9. While the Burrito was a bit smaller than expected, the beef tips were fantastic and the rice and beans plate was huge. My wife got the beef tamale with chalupas. The tamale was typical, but she ordered the chalupas with black beans and that was tasty. All I know is, we left feeling exactly how we should feel, full and happy.

This was my first time at this particular Sol Aztecas. It was really good food with ample proportions. They seem like they're very accustomed to handling large crowds and large parties. There were eight of us and had no problem keeping up with us. I would visit this location again, for sure. My daughter and I split the seafood burrito and we both got full and my son finished off the rest. The other two kids got kid's meals (chicken nuggets and personal pepperoni pizza) and they both thought they were sufficient. They both came with fries.

Had a great time with friends. We were expecting 4 of us, but before the last one showed up, we had another group of 4 walk in, so we ended up pushing two table together so we could all fit. The waiter came by and checked on us pretty regular to make sure we had everything we needed, as it took a while for us to order since we were waiting for everyone. Once we did order, the food came out pretty quick and hot, as is the case with most Mexican restaurants. The portions were pretty good as well, I wasn't really wanting something very much, so I went with a beans and beef nachos, it was more than I could eat, and that is with me only eating a few chips before we ordered our food. The beer selection was okay, they were out of Miller Lite and they do not have my favorite beer, Angry Orchard, so I just grabbed a Coors Lite draft, (in a "Shrek sized mug). For only being $4.25, it was a LOT of beer. Like I said, what was supposed to be 4 of us turned into 8 and the waiter had no problem keeping up with who had what when the orders we placed and time for the bills to be paid. I would definitely come back to this location.

Worst service and worse Mexican food I've ever had. The most soggy and tasteless burrito ever! Waited 40 minutes to get our bill.

Good food, however the service is always on the slow side. Also, if you ever make any kind of special requests or modifications to your order, there's no telling what they will bring you!

Sol Aztecas is near my home and while it may not be the greatest Mexican restaurant in town, the drinks and food are good. The last time I went my companions and I had to wait for a while for food and drinks but the price point is good and it's just fine for a quick bite when that urge for Mexican food hits.

    (3)
  • Erin R.

The worst Mexican food I have ever eaten in Louisville. Watery greasy chicken, shredded beef and beans. The burrito and enchilada were literally the same thing. No flavor. And $4 for a bottle of Dos Equis beer is ridiculous. Never again.

4 stars for the great priced margarita's, 3 for the food. Chips/salsa were just decent but food could be considered a little under that. In my opinion, this place is best used for it's fairly priced yet very strong and cold margaritas. I ordered the steak fajitas which were brought out by our very friendly Hispanic waiter. The steak was brought on a hot steaming skillet which gave it some points, kept separate from the tortillas so I could wrap it myself. Everything was great until it got down to the flavor which fell off tremendously. Overly greasy and the epitome of bland. I wouldn't let this reflect on all of their menu items, I'm sure there are some things they take real pride in doing but as for my first visit I was let down on the food. Things I would change; Obviously taking more pride in the food preparation, perfecting their starters staples as in chips, modernizing the place more, cleaner plating. Would return just for the drinks!

Pretty decent. My coworkers and I walk over here once a week between our double shifts on Saturdays for dinner. The service is okay, the food is okay, the drinks are okay. Nothing standout either good or bad. They do always let us sit in the big booth in the corner though, so that's nice. The way your food comes out is sort of inconsistent. I had a friend order the same thing on two different occasions, except once it came with a taco, and the other time she was told it didn't. Another friend asked for some lettuce, tomato, and sour cream with her quesadilla, something that usually comes with most plates in Mexican restaurants. They brought it to her, but she was charged a couple dollars for it, which she didn't find out until the checks came. Decent selection of Mexican draft beers, plus standard domestics. The only sort of negative experience we've had occurred when our waiter misunderstood us and brought us two desserts and didn't offer to remove one from the check when he brought them out.

Compared to El Nopal and some of the other local Mexican restaurants, the food here was very disappointing. The salsa did not taste fresh and the burritos and enchiladas tasted like they came from the freezer. Although they seemed to be understaffed and the waiter seemed to be working very hard and was extremely nice, I will not go back. The food was just bad, so bad I did not even want to pay for my meal.

I came here for my birthday right before close with my secret crush of 3 years. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed, but the bar was more than happy to serve us. One tasty and extremely strong margarita later I was very drunk and confessed my feelings to my crush. Sadly the budding romance fizzled out due to the fact he was kind of seeing another chick and sort of forgot to tell me, but I will always fondly remember my birthday there with him, the margarita and the delicious chips and dip.

This is hard for me to write a one star, but I can't say that there was anything particularly positive about this place for me. It is the only place I've eaten at in this foodie town that I feel the need to suggest to people NOT to come. We came with a group of 6 for my friend's 30th, because hey Mexican and margaritas are always a good start to a night. Unfortunately not this time. It wasn't crowded, which should have been a clue, but we got a big table and a round of margaritas (which took a while, oddly, but we were in good moods, so weren't concerned.) After a few minutes one of the girls finally spoke up, um, is your margarita any good. Followed by a chorus of no. Well damn. They were just off. Almost like they had put salt in the margaritas instead of just around the rim. The bday boy was the only one to finish his. Sadness. So we ate our chips and waited and waited for our food. Finally, my Enchiladas Sol Especial, one friend got fajitas, a burrito, a quesadilla. We had a spread across the table. And again, no one wanted to finish their food. Bland, overcooked, we had a spread of not so great. I'm not a complainer and I took down about half of mine but it just wasn't settling well, so I was nervous to eat more. We grabbed some fast food on the way out to the bar. Oh well.

I have to preface this review by saying that this place gets 4 stars maybe not because they have the most amazing Mexican food ever, but because going here is embedded in many of my memories from college.I have spent numerous evenings here drinking their delicious margaritas and catching up with friends or complaining about our weeks. The food here is damn good. Enchilada verdes are delicious, the rice and beans equally satisfying. Stick with the menu items are that are typical of your average Tex-Mex restaurant (burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas) --you will not be disappointed if you do. They offer a variety of different margaritas and on Wednesdays lime margaritas are half off. The service is efficient and pleasant. Perfect for a casual dinner out with friends. Me gusta!

About the 3rd time I've been to this Sol Azteca's, but possibly the last. The fish tacos are OK, they use a grilled tilapia, plenty of flavor but not a particularly firm piece of meat. The refried beans and rice were barely warm, and the service was only mildly attentive at best. Also tried the tamales and the queso chorizo dip which were doughy and salty respectively. There's better Mexican in Louisville. A lot better.

Tip: Stay away if you've ever had real Mexican food. Disclaimer: I grew up in California, lived in Mexico for 7 months, and my fave food is Mexican. I'm biased, somewhat. Pros: Servers were nice... and uhhh, can't think of any more pros. Cons: Food. Drinks. Service. Price. We were on a search for cheap Mexican food. I'm totally down for "bad" Mexi-American food when I'm feeling "piqued" from fun times the night before. I don't hate on cheap places, or even places like Tumbleweeds. But this barely qualified for even that. Quite possibly the least authentic Mexican restaurant I've ever stepped foot into. I've had better Mexican food in Budapest and at Taco Bell, and that's not saying much. I ordered the 2 cheese enchiladas/1 taco combinacion with black beans, tried to substitute a carne asada taco for ground beef taco that comes with combinacion, was told no even at first even though I said I'd pay extra for it, and when they finally did it they charged me $2 to switch the meat. Lame. So a shitty combination cost me $11.99, whereas anywhere else this should have cost about $5.99 or something. The taco came on a corn hard shell! HARD SHELL!?! Wtf. I thought those were only to be found in grocery stores and Taco Bell! Made them bring me soft corn tortillas. The cheese inside the enchiladas was some sort of "cheese food". I think it was Velveeta. Not kidding. The margaritas were strong but sweeter than sweet tea. Guess some people like that, but I don't. The salsa tasted like it came from a PACE thick n chunky jar from the grocery store and wasn't spicy. My friend ordered the Flautas and a side of nacho cheese sauce and liked both. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening. Maybe they'd have customers if they actually served Mexican food. And they should start having bands/salsa nights on that cool stage of theirs!!! Don't know, maybe the Mexican selection in Louisville is bad overall. I only moved here a few weeks ago, so I'll be on a quest to find good (or at least decent) Mexican treats. If you have any suggestions, drop me a note!

3 stars: Shrimp Rancheros 2 stars: Online menu: partly unreadable 1 star: Chips and salsa. Beans (with the Shrimp Rancheros). Too noisy; had a hard time hearing some of the people sitting next to me.

Was at first leery of this place just because of the mediocre reviews, but was quite pleased. While perhaps not a transcendent experience, the food is extremely tasty (I had the chorizo and chicken quesadilla) even the refried beans were very good. Salsa could have used a bit more cilantro, but I LOOOVE cilantro. Service was prompt and friendly. If you're in the mood for modestly priced Americanized Mexican this is a great place to go.

Not the greatest, or the most authentic when it comes to Mexi, but very good indeed. The fajitas were sizzly hot, adequately mixed meat-2-veggie ratio, and flavorful! The chips and salsa they start you out with are addictive and the margaritas are GINORM! Happy girl, here :)

The salsa and chips - very good, well-seasoned The food - slightly above average. The enchiladas suisas is good. The drinks - Strong margeritas. My wife and I had a pitcher after some christmas shopping, and I was tanked! Overall, great place to hang out with friends, but not a dining destination.

I love the food here .. Awesome place.. Nice atmosphere... Nice ppl the ones who serve you, I love the one between 1st and 2nd on Main street. How come these guys aren't on yelp ?!

Nope. Food isn't good and it took way too long. The server we had was a very friendly old mexican chap, and he is the only reason I bump them up to a 2. Unfortunately I can't go any higher, and I'm not sure if 2 stars is even warranted. That guy saved Sol Aztecas from 1 star land!

Standard Mexican fare that you will find at many strip malls across the Midwest. Chips and salsa, rice and beans with cheese on top. You order by number. Sometimes I wonder if these places buy the same restaurant start-up kits, recipes and menu templates. The fish tacos I ordered here looked like they were pureed in a Cuinsart. A low-risk choice for those seeking some south of the border tastes.

Best Mexican on Bardstown. Good prices. Lots of TVs for sports. Good bar with great prices. Salsa and food is always reliable traditional american mexican.

Mr says.... burito had a little too many rice and beans. hard to get a grip of it Mrs says... unlimited chips and salsa which is nice. good portion serving. i got the variety soft tacos and it was loaded with meat. quite impressive. but lacks authentic flavor of mexican food. i guess because we've had mexican food in california, hard to find that distinct taste.

Good solid Mexican food--nothing outstanding it just matched expectations. The prices were reasonable, the service was great, and the quantity was substantial.

How does this place only have three stars? Fabulous chicken tacos, great queso, margaritas, and chicken soup. Wow, the chicken tacos! They are awesome!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
