Petra was the ONLY place we could find near our hotel late on a Monday night (10:30p.m.) after an 8.5 hour long flight delay...my husband was HUNGRY!! Luckily we're all about ethnic cuisine so this is where we ended up. Since it was late, and dark outside, we got a bit confused and ended up walking in to the hookah bar instead of the restaurant. Totally fine; now we know they have a hookah bar! The guys in there pointed us through an inside door into the restaurant which was basically deserted, which you should assume this time of night. I was even wondering if they had a cook! One of the hookah dudes summoned the cook who came out to help us with our order. Since they don't serve alcohol, we decided to take our food to go. We went with the gyro platter which wasn't like most we're used to getting on the west coast but was still phenomenal. The lamb was flavorful, tender and juicy; not dry like a lot of lamb you get....especially this time of night. It came on top of a bed of rice with no pita, which is the part we aren't used to, along with a fairly generous side salad. All the food was spectacular, especially after a long night!! When we get a chance to make it back to Louisville we will surely go out of our way to make it back to Petra during normal business hours and take advantage of the rest of their menu. It did lose a star since they don't serve alcohol, nor do they allow BYOB. Bummer!

Pretty dang good place. We ordered the lamb kebab, foul appetizer, felafel appetizer, and my wife had an Arabic coffee and a smoothy. The lamb was delicious in my opinion but the wife prefers ground lamb so she did not like it as much. Good seasoning and a great charcoal taste. Foul is not my favorite but the wife liked it quite a bit. It is served hot (new to me) with fresh baked bread. The felafel was good but I wish we had ordered the larger size. Tasty sauce with it as well. Also of note - the rice was more than a bed for the lamb - it was delicious! Reasonable (but not cheap) place for a meal. It is important to recognize that this is a family run place in the tradition of family run places elsewhere in the world. I'm pretty sure they only had one actual employee and everyone else was family. This isn't a bad thing but it is unfamiliar to most Americans and I think the reason that at least one person docked this place some stars.

Now this is a typical Greek late night family run restaurant. Open until 11pm (even on Sundays) with Hookah and authentic cooks dishing out food at reasonable prices. The Shishkabab sandwich was simply excellent. Simple, with a great meaty taste and appropriate combination of sauce/vegetables. It was substantially different than a typical gyro. As good as gyro meat is with feta cheese and cucumber sauce, it gets old, which is why this greek sandwich stood out so much to me. Unfortunately the Babba Ganoush was bland and needed more lemon juice with garlic, or at least more spices; it was lacking in all 3 departments. On another note, since it's a family run restaurant, there's a good chance you'll be stuck waiting for your food with some screaming toddlers and their mom's chasing after them around the restaurant. This may bother you if you intend to eat there and wish to focus on something while you eat.

This is the most "family" of the family-run restaurants I have been to. And the family has to spend so much time there it might as well be their home. Hubby and I find it quite endearing to see different family members bringing up food. The hubby raves about their gyro platter with fries. It is every bit as juicy and saucy as it should be. I was curious enough to try the "Fool" or Foul, just because of the name. It turns out to be a rather soupy, tangy, blended broad bean stew. It is served with pita bread for dipping. I also had the lamb chops platter. It was tasty but a bit too "grilled" for my taste. I think this is the way it is cooked in the Middle East, not everyone likes their meat cooked medium rare like I do. Petra is also a hookah bar as I see plenty of people that come in just for the hookah.

I used to really like going to Petra to just chill and relax. But lately it seems to be going down hill the food isn't all that great anymore and to me it's the worst hookah bars so I went to prince and like it way more then Petra so if you're looking for a fun relax place to go this isn't it.

Bypass the Bypass! It turns out that Bardstown Rd under the shadow of the Buechel Bypass has a pretty great and diverse dining scene happening. This is the newest addition to the array of geographically specific groceries and restaurants in the area and I like it. The setup of the place is awesome. They have indoor, outdoor, and indoor/outdoor seating. They have table and counter service. The food is great, standards for a Middle Eastern restaurant but they are done well. They also have a lot of juice options and hookahs. Service was good, although there was some intercultural misunderstanding. The owner is very friendly.

This place is great. The food is reasonably priced, and most importantly - its TASTY. I try to get here at least a couple times per month...at least.

Seriously? Went here for lunch today... just saw it while I was driving on my way to somewhere else. Out of hamburgers. Out of gyros. out of tabbouleh. Ordered coffee and didn't get it until I was 80% done with my meal. I had the Chicken Shwarma, which was just grilled chicken, a smear of yogurt sauce, and chopped up pickles. I'm not sure if this is authentic, might be?, but it was dry and boring ($6.95). It was a combo so was supposed to come with french fries and a sode, which I substituted for a salad (fatoush I think it was called?) and coffee. They charged full price for the salad and coffee. The salad was the only thing remotely decent. Service was bizarre... A girl who appeared to be about 12 was waiting tables, and obviously had no idea what she was doing because she asked her mom/translated to her mom everything. Not that she SHOULD know what she's doing, she's like 12!!! Mom sat around scowling and reading a book with an empty baby bottle next to her on the table. An infant boy was in a swing in the corner sleeping. Now, I'm down for "home-style" dining and a laid back atmosphere, but I don't want to feel like I'm taking you away from your time with a book and an infant. Made me feel super unwelcome and awkward. So, lame meal, creepy atmosphere, and $9.95 later I say *stay away* until/if they can get their act together and either hire some people or pretend they want to be there.

Had a great meal here last night for the first time visiting. Hubby and I shared the lamb gyro and it was probably the best i have ever had - soft bread and moist tender chunks of well seasoned lamb - it was delicious! We also shared a plate of babaganouge (sp?), roasted slightly smoky eggplant mashed with garlic and seasonings to be spread on thin triangles of pita bread. It was so fresh tasting - excellent! We also had a side of taboulleh which was very good - parsley, tomato, bulgar wheat salad with a bit of mint - it was slightly salty, but still very refreshing. The mango slushies were a nice treat too - fresh and fruity - not really icey like I expected but yummy served in tall glasses. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back to try more items on the menu and will stop by for carryout too. The prices were very good.

We went here on a Friday night around 6:00pm - the restaurant used to be an old pizza place so it doesn't look fancy. There is a small hookah lounge attached to the place which adds a nice touch. It was quiet when we got there but in an hour or so, more people started coming in, which is a good sign. We ordered the hummus with chicken, falafel, lamb kebab and a kibbeh plate. They were out of falafel but the hummus was delicious as was the chicken. The lamb kebab came out shortly afterwards - it had great flavor, was tender inside and had the nice charred texture on the outside without tasting burnt or overcooked. The kibbeh was good but not great - kibbeh I've eaten in the Middle East usually had a thinner crust and more flavor. We topped off the meal with the tastiest baklava I've eaten in Louisville. I highly recommend this place. Note to potential diners - the parking lot in front of the restaurant is very awkward so make sure you back into the parking spot to allow for an easy exit - the spots are aligned in such a way, you'd think you have another way of getting out but you can only get out the way you came in. So before the lot gets too crowded, back into a vacant parking spot.
